Amazon.com Product Description The system's 800 watts (total) are routed through its 7-channel S-Master full-digital amplifier/tuner and enhanced by the Digital Direct twin-drive subwoofer and its dual 6.25-inch woofers. (The amp pumps 114 watts x 5 for front, center, and surround speakers, with 115 watts x 2 for the passive subwoofer). Sony's exclusive S-Master digital amplifier delivers high power and low heat while occupying minimal space--merely 25 percent of the space required by a conventional amplifier. Surround decoding and processing includes Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX (6.1), DTS-ES, and Dolby Pro Logic II (which generates discrete 5.1-channel surround sound from any stereo/2-channel source). Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DAV-FR8 is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Choose from progressive-scan component-video outputs, composite-video, or S-video outputs. (Older TVs may require an RF modulator or video switcher to convert composite- or S-video to a threaded RF coaxial jack.) Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound, using a high-resolution 1-bit converter to exceed the quality potential found in the standard 16-bit compact disc. The system also offers JPEG image CD slideshows so you can get the most from your favorite digital media right in the comfort of your living room. Enjoy the DAV-FR8 from the repose of your easy chair with the supplied easy-to-operate Remote Commander remote control. Auxiliary connections include secondary composite- and S-video sources for a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR, and a headphone jack for private listening. The DAV-FR8 system's design is sure to be a visual centerpiece. Glazed with a metallic frost, the system will illuminate any room with its slim, elegant speakers and attractive, brushed-aluminum chassis. What's in the Box Features

Amazon.com Product Description Composite-video and stereo analog-audio inputs and outputs let you hook the player up to your other audio/video gear for viewing on your TV or--as with video games--through the D1501's own screen. All audio and video inputs and outputs are of the minijack .125-inch size, so compatible adapter cables are required (one stereo analog audio and one composite-video cable and one AV cable are supplied). The included rechargeable NiMH battery pack provides up to three hours of playback (power consumption depends on the operations of the player, such as screen brightness, volume level, etc.). The battery pack features high storage capacity and low susceptibility to degradation, as the NiMH batteries don't have a "memory effect," making it safe to recharge them regardless of whether they're fully or only partially spent. Generally, the batteries need about five hours for complete charging. Playback options include frame-by-frame slow motion, zoom, and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs). Headphones are not included. What's in the Box Features Reviews (7)

Amazon.com Product Description For the ".1" low-frequency effects channel, Athena recommends its AS-P300 or AS-P400, which are optimized for use with the S.5 speakers. Any powered subwoofer with a continuously variable crossover (low-pass filter) should be flexible enough for a successful pairing, however (it'll just take more listening and adjusting to find the right crossover setting). All speakers use black, high-gloss finish with silver baffles designed to make them appear smaller than they really are. Each speaker uses a .5-inch Tetron-dome tweeter and 1 (in the satellites) or 2 (in the center speaker) 4-inch high-performance, injection-molded, polypropylene cone woofers. The speakers are rear-ported to enhance bas output, and they're magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion in your TV or computer monitor. The S.5s offer flexible placement options, high power handling (20 to 100 watts RMS per channel), and massive sound. They're timbre matched for use with Athena's SCT series models or its Audition series speakers. The C.5 center-channel speaker's small size and dynamic output permit broad placement options with no sacrifice in sound quality. The mounting brackets included with the S.5 speakers use one of the sturdiest and simplest designs available. The brackets require no special tools and allow flexible angles so you can place the speakers where you need to and aim the sound toward your seating positions. What's in the Box Features

Features Reviews (1)
This system is now set-up with 5 satellite speakers and TWO sub-woofers plus the electronics. This have been beautifully designed components (and compact). I don't think I could enjoy the sound any more in a theater -- I know I wouldn't. The only thing now lacking is a huge screen. The sound and spaciousness of 5.1 audio is impressive. I've listened to "Return of the King", "Kill Bill, Vol. 1", and "Terminator 3". The exploitation of the dimensionalty is simply awesome. The sharpness of the sound is impressive. I just finished adjusting the system for time delays based on positions of the speakers (manual is very clear and straight-forward) and even my ears heard (and felt) improvements. I found that my old DVDs had new life and interest. It's difficult to tell whether it is the sound alone, or the quality of the DVD player that is part of SS8.5 that made such a difference. I do not have perfect pitch or especially good ears, but the experience of this system is remarkable. My family has been wowed by the set-up. Sounds on the discs are momentarily mistaken for real sounds in the room. In "Kill Bill", breaking glass sounds like real breaking glass. Together with the increasing cable offerings available in HDTV, many new choices are appearing. These do not have the impact of the DVDs that I've played, but nevertheless well executed. I am one VERY satisfied Nakamichi customer. ... Read more

For music, the player features programmable memory and other automated features, as well as an AM-FM tuner and 5.1, 3.1, and 3D stereo functions. In addition to one coaxial output, three analog audio inputs, one S-Video output, and two composite video outputs, this system comes with a nice little color-coordinated remote. Features Reviews (19)
There are a few drawbacks - the speakers are a little on the flimsy side, and there's an occasional whirring feedback noise at low volumes when using it with a connected auxiliary device (thankfully, this doesn't happen in DVD mode). Though the surround sound is rich, it loses something at lower volumes - so you couldn't really use this to play intense-sounding movies at late hours if you've got neighbors. The manual is a bit inconsistent with the actual procedures that need to be followed in order to properly set up the system - it will make reference to the SETUP button, when what you really need to press is MENU, etc. You'll also need to keep the manual close by, since some of the features and configuration options are a bit complicated. Another minor oddity is the clock - it runs really fast and is about 5 min. ahead of real time after about 2 months. By far the most serious drawback is the remote. It's flimsy - the remote on my 14" TV/DVD combo is much better than the remote for this system. And the buttons can be tempermental - they are small and need to be pressed in a certain way that I haven't yet consistently figured out. Overall, however, I'd say that in this price class, it brings you close to the quality and features of systems costing hundreds of dollars more and is thus a great value - despite a few significant drawbacks.
The setup IS frustrating because the manual doesn't match the firmware - they changed the user interface and shipped the manual for the old one. The menu system is modal - you have to be in tuner mode to set the clock, that option doesn't appear in CD/DVD mode. Of course the manual tells you to press the "setup" button to get there but the remote has a "menu" button. Bad translations abound... anyone care to move any more of this work offshore (That's probably not fair, how did I expect them to offer this product at this price)? The eject button doesn't interrupt when you turn the unit on and press eject - the unit still spins the disk all the way up and inspects it for about 15 seconds. Oh, don't even think of putting a mildly scratched CD in it - it doesn't deal with that well at all... sounds like a 33 played on 45. I'm sending it back because of the 1 hour delay thing and they told me that the 928 is discontinued so they'll be replacing it with the newer model. I can't wait to see what I get with that... - oh and I pay the shipping to them... about 15% of the purchase price - a small system but still 61 pounds. I wonder if I'm going to wish I had just spent the extra money up front when all is said and done. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description The powerful HTR-5730 receiver accepts the DVD player's Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals and routes each channel to its designated speaker. Additionally, the receiver's Silent Cinema and Night Listening modes enhance headphone and low-level listening, respectively, while Yamaha's 32-bit Cinema-DSP processing gives you an additional 24 surround effects to enhance your movies and music. The receiver offers a total of 4 A/V inputs. The tuner section offers 40-station AM/FM preset tuning. Yamaha's single-disc DVS-5650 spins DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, MP3 CD, and JPEG image CDs (including mixed-mode MP3/JPEG CDs), putting a range of audio and video media at your disposal. The player features both interlaced (for standard TVs) and progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with compatible HD or HD-ready TVs). Other features include picture zoom, shuffle play, repeat play, and parental controls (disc lock and password protection). The 6-speaker complement includes the 5-speaker NS-AP2500 for the front, center, and surround speakers and Yamaha's YST-SW010 subwoofer for deep bass, which is important for effective home theater sound. Each speaker in the NS-AP2500 ensemble uses a sealed, acoustic-suspension design with a 3-inch woofer and a .5-inch soft-dome tweeter. The center speaker houses dual 2.5-inch drivers for broader dispersion of midrange frequencies--critical for clarity of dialogue and other center-channel information. The 100-watt, 6.5-inch subwoofer uses Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST), which generates incredible bass from its small enclosure. Advanced YST uses negative-impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass. QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses a down-firing driver with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate sound with equal effectiveness in all directions. The sub's individual volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub's output to the overall volume of the system. The sub has a signal-sensing circuit, too. When it detects an audio signal, it powers right up. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off. All speakers included with the YHT-550 feature magnetic shielding, so they can be placed near a TV or monitor and cause no picture degradation. What's in the Box Features
