    Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's DAV-FR8 Dream System home theater will grace small- to medium-sized spaces with high style, high power, and amazingly space-efficient components. The system features a slot-loading 5-disc DVD-Video/SACD changer with built-in surround-receiver abilities and color-coded speaker terminals, 2 floorstanding speakers (left/right front), a slim center-channel speaker, 2 bookshelf surround speakers, and a stand-alone subwoofer designed to work in concert with the rest of the components to deliver exhilarating, full-bodied surround sound from DVD, CD, MP3 CD, and Super Audio CD (SACD) music sources.

The system's 800 watts (total) are routed through its 7-channel S-Master full-digital amplifier/tuner and enhanced by the Digital Direct twin-drive subwoofer and its dual 6.25-inch woofers. (The amp pumps 114 watts x 5 for front, center, and surround speakers, with 115 watts x 2 for the passive subwoofer). Sony's exclusive S-Master digital amplifier delivers high power and low heat while occupying minimal space--merely 25 percent of the space required by a conventional amplifier.

Surround decoding and processing includes Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX (6.1), DTS-ES, and Dolby Pro Logic II (which generates discrete 5.1-channel surround sound from any stereo/2-channel source).

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DAV-FR8 is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Choose from progressive-scan component-video outputs, composite-video, or S-video outputs. (Older TVs may require an RF modulator or video switcher to convert composite- or S-video to a threaded RF coaxial jack.)

Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound, using a high-resolution 1-bit converter to exceed the quality potential found in the standard 16-bit compact disc. The system also offers JPEG image CD slideshows so you can get the most from your favorite digital media right in the comfort of your living room.

Enjoy the DAV-FR8 from the repose of your easy chair with the supplied easy-to-operate Remote Commander remote control. Auxiliary connections include secondary composite- and S-video sources for a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR, and a headphone jack for private listening.

The DAV-FR8 system's design is sure to be a visual centerpiece. Glazed with a metallic frost, the system will illuminate any room with its slim, elegant speakers and attractive, brushed-aluminum chassis.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Audiovox's affordable and portable D1501 features a 5.8-inch, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio LCD and compatibility with DVD-Video, VCD/SVCD, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3-encoded discs. Take your favorite movies and music on the plane, on the bus, or even in the car for the kids--a supplied adapter lets you power the unit right from your dashboard cigarette lighter, and the unit sports two separate headphone jacks for tandem viewing. The unit also includes a full-function remote control for hassle-free operation in tight quarters.

Composite-video and stereo analog-audio inputs and outputs let you hook the player up to your other audio/video gear for viewing on your TV or--as with video games--through the D1501's own screen. All audio and video inputs and outputs are of the minijack .125-inch size, so compatible adapter cables are required (one stereo analog audio and one composite-video cable and one AV cable are supplied).

The included rechargeable NiMH battery pack provides up to three hours of playback (power consumption depends on the operations of the player, such as screen brightness, volume level, etc.). The battery pack features high storage capacity and low susceptibility to degradation, as the NiMH batteries don't have a "memory effect," making it safe to recharge them regardless of whether they're fully or only partially spent. Generally, the batteries need about five hours for complete charging.

Playback options include frame-by-frame slow motion, zoom, and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs). Headphones are not included.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look out! Not reliable!
It was fun while it lasted. Bought it last Father's day, and by this Father's day, it was already broken--won't load, freezes, won't play DVD (apparently the lens needs replacing). A local TV repair shop says it will cost more than the player itself with labor involved. Audiovox will charge a flat rate of 93.75 plus the cost of shipping it to them to fix it. So basically a year later I'm having to buy the player all over again. Pretty steep considering it is only one year old, and that I took impeccable care of the player (cleaned often and kept in padded case).

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific DVD Player for the money!
I bought this for a planned cross country road trip that did not happen. Now I use it often if not for movies, to listen to music. The picture is great, sharp and clear. The sound is great as well.It is lightweight and it comes with the things you need to either use it in a car or to hook it up to your tv at home. The battery holds the charge well. Things that are important to me in a portable. Do not let the price fool you. Yes it is lower than most other portables but the quality is outstanding. I would and will someday buy another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gift for husband
I bought this for my husband's birthday (50 - so I splurged a bit). He absolutely loved it! Our two teenage children were fascinated. My husband's co-worker wanted to see it - and then ordered one for herself. My husband loves to watch dvds that I don't really want to see so the portability of the dvd player is very useful to us. It has a great picture - extremely clear. I highly recommend this player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little DVD player!
This is a great portable dvd player! I bought it for a trip, and found it never skipped or had any trouble, even when the plane went through quite a bit of turbulence! Also... I bought two dvds while on the trip, only to realize that they were in a foreign language with English subtitles. I was afraid of how the subtitles might appear on a 5.8" screen, but they were just fine - very readable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
I am so pleased with this little dvd player.. the picture quality is clear and the sound is great. I took it on a recent trip and it charged up perfectly and played just as I expected. No surprises! I can't help but compare this one to another portable dvd player I had to send back recently as would not work correctly - the audiovox was even less expensive! I would recommend this to anyone who would like a lightweight, dependable portable dvd. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Point 5 Mk II multichannel home-theater speaker system from Athena Technologies packs eye-pleasing style, high technology, and great sound quality into a small but powerful system. This award-winning set consists of 4 identical Athena Technologies S.5 bookshelf/satellite speakers and a C.5 center-channel speaker, all designed to reproduce the 5 primary channels of a 5.1 DVD or HDTV surround signal: front left/right, rear left/right, and front center.

For the ".1" low-frequency effects channel, Athena recommends its AS-P300 or AS-P400, which are optimized for use with the S.5 speakers. Any powered subwoofer with a continuously variable crossover (low-pass filter) should be flexible enough for a successful pairing, however (it'll just take more listening and adjusting to find the right crossover setting).

All speakers use black, high-gloss finish with silver baffles designed to make them appear smaller than they really are. Each speaker uses a .5-inch Tetron-dome tweeter and 1 (in the satellites) or 2 (in the center speaker) 4-inch high-performance, injection-molded, polypropylene cone woofers. The speakers are rear-ported to enhance bas output, and they're magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion in your TV or computer monitor.

The S.5s offer flexible placement options, high power handling (20 to 100 watts RMS per channel), and massive sound. They're timbre matched for use with Athena's SCT series models or its Audition series speakers. The C.5 center-channel speaker's small size and dynamic output permit broad placement options with no sacrifice in sound quality.

The mounting brackets included with the S.5 speakers use one of the sturdiest and simplest designs available. The brackets require no special tools and allow flexible angles so you can place the speakers where you need to and aim the sound toward your seating positions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive in performance and design
A favorite pastime is to visit audiovideophile stores and listen to home theater set-ups. Well the prices are coming down. No longer the $15K or more set-ups. At least until I get a large plasma screen or something. I bought a mere 32" Toshiba HD TV and I realized the sound fell short of what it could be. Oddly, I saw demo'ed at Sam's Club a Nakamichi SoundSpace 8.5 speaker system (with A-V receiver-DVD player). The whole set-up was totally impressive. When the price dropped further, I couldn't resist.

This system is now set-up with 5 satellite speakers and TWO sub-woofers plus the electronics. This have been beautifully designed components (and compact). I don't think I could enjoy the sound any more in a theater -- I know I wouldn't. The only thing now lacking is a huge screen. The sound and spaciousness of 5.1 audio is impressive. I've listened to "Return of the King", "Kill Bill, Vol. 1", and "Terminator 3". The exploitation of the dimensionalty is simply awesome. The sharpness of the sound is impressive. I just finished adjusting the system for time delays based on positions of the speakers (manual is very clear and straight-forward) and even my ears heard (and felt) improvements. I found that my old DVDs had new life and interest. It's difficult to tell whether it is the sound alone, or the quality of the DVD player that is part of SS8.5 that made such a difference.

I do not have perfect pitch or especially good ears, but the experience of this system is remarkable. My family has been wowed by the set-up. Sounds on the discs are momentarily mistaken for real sounds in the room. In "Kill Bill", breaking glass sounds like real breaking glass. Together with the increasing cable offerings available in HDTV, many new choices are appearing. These do not have the impact of the DVDs that I've played, but nevertheless well executed.

I am one VERY satisfied Nakamichi customer. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Home Theatre System for Apartments or Small Spaces
I bought this Home Theater System about a year and a half ago (and unbelievably, it hasn't gone down in price!). It's a great system for city folk who don't have a lot of space but want a versatile system with expandability. The DVD playback is excellent, though it only plays one disc at a time - so there's the potential annoyance of getting up to change discs when necessary. It has 3 auxiliary A/V inputs that allow you to make connections to your TV, stereo, etc. I actually have it connected to the soundcard on my PC, which allows me to play Internet Radio through the Home Theater system!

There are a few drawbacks - the speakers are a little on the flimsy side, and there's an occasional whirring feedback noise at low volumes when using it with a connected auxiliary device (thankfully, this doesn't happen in DVD mode). Though the surround sound is rich, it loses something at lower volumes - so you couldn't really use this to play intense-sounding movies at late hours if you've got neighbors. The manual is a bit inconsistent with the actual procedures that need to be followed in order to properly set up the system - it will make reference to the SETUP button, when what you really need to press is MENU, etc. You'll also need to keep the manual close by, since some of the features and configuration options are a bit complicated. Another minor oddity is the clock - it runs really fast and is about 5 min. ahead of real time after about 2 months.

By far the most serious drawback is the remote. It's flimsy - the remote on my 14" TV/DVD combo is much better than the remote for this system. And the buttons can be tempermental - they are small and need to be pressed in a certain way that I haven't yet consistently figured out.

Overall, however, I'd say that in this price class, it brings you close to the quality and features of systems costing hundreds of dollars more and is thus a great value - despite a few significant drawbacks.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's been a major disappointment...
I bought this Koss system as their headphones have been some of the best but this system theater system is a giant leap downward. Major complaint: it simply won't play a dvd unless it is in pristine condition. About half the DVD's we rent won't play all the way through. Second complaint: the remote is not intuitive and thus very confusing. Now I've got to buy a 2nd DVD player so I can watch videos. Look elsewhere!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but save your money.
Definitely not worth 200-300 bucks if you ask me. The dvd player is poor quality (FF and Rewind make scratching noises and barely work), the surround effects on the receiver are weak, the speakers are really cheaply made. If it breaks, you have nobody to turn to. Mine is experiencing stereo problems after owning for 1 year. I have lots of home stereo experience and I can tell you these problems are with the unit itself and not with my wiring configuration or even the speakers themselves. Because I can't talk to anyone or even ship my unit in for repair, I'm stuck with a faulty unit, and I've essentially thrown $300 down the toilet. Stick with brands that have better support, ie Sony, Aiwa, and the like.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid for the price!!
I bought this system a year and a half ago and it has started having problems reading audio cds. After watching a dvd stop it and I leave it alone for about 25-30 min. tops when i am in the other room it starts playing again with out haveing me do anything to it. One last thing I experianced some background noise while playing dvds so i changed to a better quallity cable and the background noise improved but did not go away completely.

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange behavior, annoying features
It seemed to be a bargain for the price, but I suspect that I got what I paid for. The unit has quite a few annoying "features": it replays disks exactly 1 hour after you stop them - I found this on the first night when Al Pacino woke me out of a sound sleep after I left the DVD in the player.

The setup IS frustrating because the manual doesn't match the firmware - they changed the user interface and shipped the manual for the old one. The menu system is modal - you have to be in tuner mode to set the clock, that option doesn't appear in CD/DVD mode. Of course the manual tells you to press the "setup" button to get there but the remote has a "menu" button. Bad translations abound... anyone care to move any more of this work offshore (That's probably not fair, how did I expect them to offer this product at this price)?

The eject button doesn't interrupt when you turn the unit on and press eject - the unit still spins the disk all the way up and inspects it for about 15 seconds. Oh, don't even think of putting a mildly scratched CD in it - it doesn't deal with that well at all... sounds like a 33 played on 45.

I'm sending it back because of the 1 hour delay thing and they told me that the 928 is discontinued so they'll be replacing it with the newer model. I can't wait to see what I get with that... - oh and I pay the shipping to them... about 15% of the purchase price - a small system but still 61 pounds.

I wonder if I'm going to wish I had just spent the extra money up front when all is said and done. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy high-quality video and multichannel surround audio with Yamaha's stylish silver YHT-550 all-in-one home theater. The system consists of Yamaha's DVS-5650 progressive-scan DVD player, the 5-piece NS-AP2500 speaker ensemble, the YST-SW010 subwoofer, plus Yamaha's HTR-5730 home theater receiver, which pumps 100 watts per channel x 6 discrete channels and offers a host of options for rendering the type of surround sound best suited to your taste or programming.

The powerful HTR-5730 receiver accepts the DVD player's Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals and routes each channel to its designated speaker. Additionally, the receiver's Silent Cinema and Night Listening modes enhance headphone and low-level listening, respectively, while Yamaha's 32-bit Cinema-DSP processing gives you an additional 24 surround effects to enhance your movies and music. The receiver offers a total of 4 A/V inputs. The tuner section offers 40-station AM/FM preset tuning.

Yamaha's single-disc DVS-5650 spins DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, MP3 CD, and JPEG image CDs (including mixed-mode MP3/JPEG CDs), putting a range of audio and video media at your disposal. The player features both interlaced (for standard TVs) and progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with compatible HD or HD-ready TVs). Other features include picture zoom, shuffle play, repeat play, and parental controls (disc lock and password protection).

The 6-speaker complement includes the 5-speaker NS-AP2500 for the front, center, and surround speakers and Yamaha's YST-SW010 subwoofer for deep bass, which is important for effective home theater sound. Each speaker in the NS-AP2500 ensemble uses a sealed, acoustic-suspension design with a 3-inch woofer and a .5-inch soft-dome tweeter. The center speaker houses dual 2.5-inch drivers for broader dispersion of midrange frequencies--critical for clarity of dialogue and other center-channel information.

The 100-watt, 6.5-inch subwoofer uses Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST), which generates incredible bass from its small enclosure. Advanced YST uses negative-impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass.

QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses a down-firing driver with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate sound with equal effectiveness in all directions. The sub's individual volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub's output to the overall volume of the system. The sub has a signal-sensing circuit, too. When it detects an audio signal, it powers right up. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off.

All speakers included with the YHT-550 feature magnetic shielding, so they can be placed near a TV or monitor and cause no picture degradation.
