    Amazon.com Product Description

Pioneer's DVR-520H-S DVD recorder houses an 80 GB hard drive, making the component a one-stop choice for both time-shifted TV viewing and video archiving. The hard drive holds up to 102 hours of programming. Once you record TV shows or home movies to the DVR-520H-S's hard drive, you'll have terrific editing and playback options: store programs and keep them indefinitely; delete them after viewing to free up disc space; or edit your favorite programs and home movies and set them up with brilliant menus, wallpaper, and playlists.

When you find yourself with a recording you want to watch again, you can keep it on the hard drive or simply burn it to a DVD-R (permanent: can't be erased) or DVD-RW (can be erased or written over many times). The DVR-520H-S features high-speed dubbing in both directions (disc to HDD, HDD to disc). You can burn content to recordable DVD-R and DVD-RW at high speed: a 1-hour program recorded in the Extended Play mode can be transferred to an 8x DVD-R in less than 2 minutes.

A feature called Disc Backup lets you make a direct file transfer of a home movie DVD to the unit's hard drive, and from that make perfect copies of your original DVD for all of your family and friends--at blazing 8x speed. The Chase Play feature lets you watch your favorite TV show from the beginning, even while it's still being recorded. The DVR-520-S also features the ability to create full-motion thumbnails with sound and a built-in TV tuner. You can also play a DVD while recording a TV show to the hard drive, or play programs from the hard drive while archiving something to DVD.

Additionally, DVD-RW permits non-destructive on-disc editing. The newly created DVD-R can be played back on most other home and portable DVD players, as well as DVD-ROM computer drives. A great feature for home-movie directors is the ability to create a professional-looking menu for home movies, similar to the menu found on DVD movies. Users can choose from nine graphical navigation menus to personalize their disc.

The DVR-520H-S also features PureCinema 3:2 Progressive Scan for a film-like presentation when watching movies. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. (You'll need an HD-ready TV to appreciate this feature.)

Heading up the connections are DV (digital video) inputs and outputs (1 each, IEEE 1394) for seamless integration with your camcorder and/or your computer. You get a trio of audio/video inputs (composite- and S-video with stereo analog audio) and 2 sets of composite-/S-video outputs with left/right analog-audio outputs.

Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. An RF coaxial AV input and output help you interface with older TVs, VCRs, and cable boxes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Receiver for the money
I just purchased this receiver and found it to be quite wonderful. The Dolby Digital and DTS surround for DVD's is terrific. It's handling of CD's is very, very good too. I found it easy to set up and the auto set up of the speakers is very easy to do. My only complaint is that the remote is a little bit confusing when you first start using it, but once you get used to it's layout and which buttons handle what feature, then it's a breeze to operate. It's bit on the heavy side to hold in your hand, but otherwise it's very good. Highly recommended for it's advanced features and ease of operation.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent unit but very poor remote and manual
I previously owned a Yamaha DSP-1000 sound processor that had more power, sounded as good or better than the Denon, and had a much better remote and manual.I would not recommend it for the above reasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Receiver
This is the best value for the money on the market in A/V Receivers.I have owned this one since its inception and it has been great.I strongly recommend it to anyone!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Intermittent CD Player
I have returned this unit twice to no avail. It has an irritating flaw of not recognizing/not loading a CD and skipping its place in the tray. Sometimes it plays all five CDs, sometimes only one. Not what I expected from Sony.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sony's CDP-CE375 May Have Some Flaws!
My Sony CDP-CE375 5-disc carousel changer had a major flaw which may or may not be present in all their units. When loading a cd in tray 1 often the cd player would not drop the disc down into it's play position and therefore the front info. panel would say "No Disc". You would have to press "open" and then "close" it again before the cd player would then do it the proper way. This can be very irritating to say the least. This particular cd player does have remote control as well as a headphone jack. There are volume controls on the remote which allow one to control the volume when using the headphone jack. There's also a jog dial to quickly switch tracks. You can play cd's, cdr's and cdrw's in the unit. A cool function of this unit is that you can change discs while one is playing. Also, this player has digital optical out if you want to record cd's digitally from the player to a cd recorder. The sound quality is excellent and I had no problems playing back cdr's or cdrw's. A good unit if the above mentioned problem didn't exist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!
Looking for a great sounding two-channel stereo receiver at a reasonable price?

I did a lot of research on receivers prior to deciding to go with the Onkyo TX8511. I found that the ratings all over the web for this unit were very good for a basic stereo receiver, I do agree. Features I wanted in a unit was, multi-zone, 2-channel stereo, phono hookup. It had to be a basic stereo system with good quality stereo sound. I decided to purchase the unit a few day's ago at Circuit City on 2/2/04 based on reviews, I paired it up with my newly purchased Bose Acoustimass 5 speakers. I rushed home excited to here the unit for the first time only to find myself disappointed, at first. The sound from the unit was harsh and lacked base response. I decided to run a burn-in on the unit, thinking it needed a break-in period as many new components do. I loaded up the CD deck with 6 CD's, set it to loop and let it run at half volume for roughly 50 hours with the speakers switched off. WOW what a difference, I'm glad I gave the unit a chance and time to burn-in, the sound amazes me each time I listen. The Bose are still in there break-in phase the sound just keeps getting better each time. The receiver drives good crisp highs and more then ample bass response, a few tweaks to the speaker arrange and viola awesome sound system. I have been overly impressed with the sound from this receiver in all aspects. I do notice a low hiss occasionally when playing CD's in my collection; I believe it is due to poor replication/recordings that have been digitally re-mastered. The FM tuner is weak; I live in the suburbs, which contributes to the week signals received. Though my Pioneer CX770 tuner and amp that I swapped out for the Onkyo TX8511 had no problem-receiving signals. The Onkyo TX-8511 is a good solid unit; paired up with the right components I believe there is no better unit for the price. Other comparable units I considered where Denon, Harmon Kardon and Yamaha which where priced towards the $500 dollar range, I wont compare apples to oranges. I give Onkyo credit for blowing all other competition away within the $300 price range.

Other units: Pioneer CX770 tuner and amp that was replaced with the TX8511. A Sony Home Theater, which is wonderful for deep sound while viewing DVD's. Technics and Onkyo that are roughly 20 years old also exhibit signal strength issues in my area too, which I would expect from units that old.

    Strengths
Great fullness & precision of sound
    Neutral low distortion
    Ease of use
    Build quality

    Weaknesses
    Spring-clip speaker connections
    Weak FM reception

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this!
If you are in the neighborhood for a new stereo receiver, but are not really looking for the extra expenses and features of a "home theater" receiver, than look no farther than the Onkyo TX-8511. This has got to be the best receiver I have ever owned. I bought it back in early 2000, and thus far, it has never let me down. Truly, it is a highly dependable rock-solid receiver. The sound quality is amazingly crystal clear with no distortion. Pull it out of the box, hook it up, and be prepared to hear your music in a whole new way. Also, with an FM sensitivity of 11.2 dBf, you'll be able to tune into your favorite radio stations easily with minimal interference.

It has 4 inputs (including a phono input for turntables that do not have a built in phono preamp) and 2 video inputs (which can be used for other uses too -- as I said, this is not a home theater receiver so it does not have the "home theater" features like Dolby Digital).

It also has some really nice features with it like:

*30 AM/FM presets plus the ability to "name" those presets up to 8 characters. (Example: instead of seeing "94.9 FM" on the display, you could program in the call letters of the radio station, or something else.)

*Direct access tuning (from unit's front panel only)

    *Motorized volume control

*Telephone-style alphanumeric keypad on the unit's front panel

*Tape 2 Monitor loop for connecting either a 2nd tape player or a graphic equalizer

*4 speaker channels, so that you can run two sets of speakers (A, B, or A and B)

*Two switched power outlets on back (This works great for audio components that do not have an on/off button on their remotes)

*Impedance selector for setting up 4 or 8 Ohm speakers

*Analog volume, bass, treble, and balance controls (I like this better than the digital controls because it is alot easier to fine tune the sound.)

No other stereo receiver has managed to stand the test of time quite like this one. It may be a bit more pricy than some other standard stereo receivers, but it is well worth it! If you buy it, you will NOT be disappointed.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-8511ok
This is a great buy and has really good sound quality. Above all, it works very well with my phonograph, tape deck, casette player, and two channel speakers, which I send to two rooms. It is hard to find a receiver that works now with older components.
As one who has a vaste 33 rpm record collection, I am glad Onkyo
has this product and is selling it for a reasonable price. Note:It does not have an equalizer. By this I mean, on older stereo records that were not balanced, the sound comes out louder in one speaker than the other. The Balance control does not do much to correct this. Onkyo could improve this feature.
It does not have Dolby sound but sounds great anyway. The AM/FM
reception is good even though I have not yet hooked it up to an amplifier antenna. I highly recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Receiver for a Great Price
The TX-8511 Onkyo Stereo Receiver is an affordable, efficient way to upgrade the quality of your sound system. This receiver even made my old set of speakers sound great. I recommend this receiver for people who just want the basics for their sound system. For me, it was important to have a phono input, because I listen to records. The TX-8511 has the phono input as well as inputs for anything else you might want to hook up (e.g., CD players, multiple tape decks, etc.). It is also really quiet, with no buzz or hum whatsoever. It is clean, lean, and mean. The 100 watts per channel is more than sufficient to raise the roof, if you feel the need.

Besides its excellent performance, I also appreciated how easy it was to set up. The instructions were clear and written with simplicity, and everything is labeled clearly on the receiver itself. It only took a few minutes to get everything working. This is such a great unit that I hope that Onkyo doesn't do something ill-advised like discontinue it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Merry Xmas to myself.
I bought this receiver so I could swap it with an earlier Onkyo Tuner which is >15 years old. The key feature is the remote control. Such a nice feature when listening to John Madden or those annoying loud commercials. Other than that I enjoy both models about the same. In fact if I could add remote control to my older model I would be just as happy.

Be careful when reading the instruction manual as the layout is okay but in alot of cases just doesn't apply, so you will spend alot of time looking for stuff that doesn't exist.

I love Onkyo and will buy more products from them. ... Read more

Denon's powerful DHT-485DV home theater unites separate and complementary Denon components in a reasonably priced and easily configured system. Beyond this package, all you need for terrifically exciting home entertainment is a living room, a television, and a place to put the speakers. The system includes a versatile audio/video receiver and DVD player along with 6 speakers and a 100-watt subwoofer.

Denon's AVR-485 provides 6 channels of discrete amplification to drive all the primary speakers in a 6.1 surround sound system (front left/right speakers, rear left/right surrounds, and front/rear center speakers, along with a preamp output for the ".1" low-frequency effects channel, i.e. subwoofer). The receiver packs 110 watts per channel.

You'll never be at a loss for creative surround algorithms, irrespective of your listening source. The receiver's onboard 6.1-channel surround processing includes Dolby Digital Surround EX, DTS 5.1, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx (for cinema, music, and games). Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing is the first technology to offer a choice of processing traditional stereo music and movie content into room-filling 5.1 or 6.1 channels.

The AVR-485 owes its high sound quality to premium digital-audio technologies like Melody 32-bit DSP from Analog Devices, whose 24-bit/192 kHz high-resolution DACs ensure premium playback sound from all 7 channels. Separate A and B speaker outputs (left/right only) let you power speakers in a second room.

The receiver features 3 assignable sets of component-video inputs and 1 set of monitor inputs (all with 30 MHz bandwidth). You get 4 sets composite and 3 S-video inputs, a set of 5.1 external wide-bandwidth (100 kHz) inputs for multichannel formats such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, 2 assignable digital inputs (1 optical, 1 coaxial), and a total of 6 analog inputs (not including the unit's built-in AM/FM tuner).

The included slim DVD-555 DVD player will let you enjoy your recordable CDs filled with MP3 and Windows Media Audio files (including WMA 9) in addition to playing DVD-Video, recordable DVD (video-mode DVD-RW and DVD+R/+RW), and recordable CD configured for digital photo viewing (JPEG image CD, Kodak Picture CD, and Fujicolor CD).

For its video stage, the DVD-555 employs dual, discrete 54 MHz, 10-bit video digital-to-analog conversion (1 chip each for progressive and interlaced outputs). Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts (appreciable on high-definition and HD-ready TVs).

A 2 MB memory buffer decreases layer-change pauses or pickup dropouts during DVD playback, and standard composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with just about any television.

The player uses Burr-Brown 24-bit, 192 kHz audio DACs (PCM-1756) for pristine sound from DVDs and CDs, and both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection with the receiver.

The speaker system employs 5 two-way satellite speakers, a broad center-channel speaker, and a powered subwoofer, all of which are carefully calibrated to provide seamless, 360-degree sound, whatever your program source.

AVR-485 receiver, DVD-555 DVD player, receiver/DVD player remote controls, remote batteries (2 AA each), 5 SC-A65 satellite speakers, a SC-C65 center speaker, a DSW-65 powered subwoofer, applicable user's manuals, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, a DVD player AC power cord, requisite speaker cable, a service-station list, and a warranty card. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great headphones for the cost
I've used these headphones for many months and like them a lot. I have an MP3 player that needs a boost, as well as my laptop. These headphones provide that volume increase so I can leave my boostaroo headphone amplifier at home. Noise reduction works when on a plane, near a forced-air fireplace, operating machinery, etc. Battery lasts a long time, headphones work when battery is dead (just no boost/canceling). Comfortable, foldable, has a plane adaptor, carrying bag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Everyday Travelers
When I first purchased these headphone I had my douts. But When I got them, They worked great. Sure they dont compare to the bose headphone but if you want a low price noise canceling headphones go with these ones. Dont worry about what others say these head phones are great. They are also very comfortable and have this adapter to work on airplanes. They also fold up small to take them everywhere. They have been around the world with me, I dont leave them behind. On the plane they block out most the noise to make your long or short flight refreshing and confortable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
Incredibly poor treble response. Noise cancellation nearly non-existent. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for. Mine are going back.

3-0 out of 5 stars The truth about sound cancellation
First of all this review aplies to all headphones (over-the-head, on or over your ear headphones) that "actively" cancell noise i.e. w/ electronics. They are only made to reduce certain frequencies, talking isn't among them, however, things like airplane roar, computer noises (hisses and such) and reduced. This aplies even to extremely expensive headphones like the Bose Quiet Comfort (250-299 depending on new or old version) which act the same way. This explanation also helps in figuring out a reason why some people report NO cancelling (probably using them w/ wrong frequencies) why some say they're wonderful, most who say that talk about airplane roar being reduced, the thing their meant to do. I hope this clears up some of the mystery about active noise cancellation headphones

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing product
I bought these hoping that they would help me work in a room with a TV playing by listening to music. They were totally ineffective. The noise canceling feature was JUST noticeable i.e. there was a barely detectable difference between ON and OFF. But the frequency response was poor - almost no upper register which made listening to music hardly bearable even with TV off. I returned them for credit, ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

The TC-WE305 cassette deck offers dual-deck convenience at an affordable price. One deck plays, the other records. You can set the recording input level using a dedicated control and the unit's seven-segment LED peak-level meters and choose from both normal- and high-speed dubbing--normal-speed for higher fidelity, high-speed for greater convenience.

Sony has constructed the deck with high-density Permalloy tape heads for long life, and separate motors drive each deck. For noise reduction, the TC-WE305 is outfitted with Dolby B, the encoding standard used on most prerecorded cassettes. An MPX filter blocks the 19 kHz multiplex pilot tone of FM stereo broadcasts for proper Dolby NR tracking when you record off the air.

Other features include soft-touch transport controls, twin tape counters (one for each deck), which come in handy when you're making a compilation from a variety of source tapes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing wrong.
I've had no problems with my deck. It still runs the same as when I bought it. I do pampere my equipment however. I've even recorded from my studio equipment to the deck and had minimal generation loss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor product
This is by far the worst dual cassette deck that I have ever purchased. The play back and record have very poor sound quality. The tapes regardless of what kind, do not play at the right speed, in other words they play slower then other tape decks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best value receiver <$800
Wonderful "brains" behind your home theater/stereo, whether you're just getting started out or looking for a receiver upgrade for an existing setup. This is the type of receiver you can grow with.Start with it and an inexpensive set of 5 speakers, then gradually swap out the speakers as the budget allows.Point is, the clean, efficient ouput of this receiver will shine driving low-end Infinity HTIB satellites or powering a set of B&W bookshelves.

Operation is as easy as you can get.Discrete input codes, discrete off/on codes make programming a universal remote much easier.Auto-setup is great, auto-detection of input signals mean you don't have to know whether the input is DTS or PLIIx or whatever - it figures it out itself.

Lastly, it's the little Denon touches that will ultimately justify this purchase. For just a hair more than a Sony, Pioneer, or Yamaha you get a rock-solid build quality, 3 component inputs (vs. the usual 2), full 7.1, 5 way posts on all speaker outputs, Auto-EQ including the microphone (costs extra $ on most others) and configurable inputs.

Spend the money to get this receiver, and you'll be able to grow your home theater around it.

    Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Behold the holy grail of receivers!
My friend (a total audio & video ignoramus) gave me a budget to do his first home theater system. The solution: spend the biggest bucks on the Denon AVR-2105.Why?
    1) It has an auto setup facility that does more than just set up the speaker levels. It actually adjusts for flaws in the room and the weaknesses of the speakers.Whatever speakers you connect will sound like they are a few levels better in quality thanks to the kick ass audio setup technology from Audyssey Labs that Denon uses.
    2) It does video conversion. This means I hook up his High Def TV to the Denon using component video cables (the best quality hookups available at this point). Then I hook up his VCR, DVD & cable box using their best hookups (S-Video, Component, Component respectively) & the Denon automatically converts the cheesy S-Video to component. Now the TV just always stays on component input & I never have to adjust it again, ever.
    3) Because of 1) I can buy the best speakers the lowest bidder can provide.US$350 for a 5.1 package in this case.
    4) I hook it all up & attach the auto setup microphone & let the auto setup rip.One minute later the speakers are dialed in for the room, it detected the fact that they are small speakers & there is a subwoofer attached.Distances to the sweet spot are exact to the foot.
    5) "Ronin" is popped into the DVD & we skip chapters to the beginning of the big chase & fight.Holy cow, does De Niro ever have a sweet sounding machine gun!In the small living room, the sound is awesome.Next up, in goes Andrea Botticelli's "Romanza" & he lets rip some operatic arias (my friend is Italian).Sweet, sweet sound.

Finally, there is just one thing to do: girlfriend proof this setup. After a long struggle it is close but no cigar. The TV's video input is no problem, but switching devices on the Denon remote is ugly using those sliders. The button layout on the Denon remote sure is nice though. The Panasonic TV remote is pretty nice but it is still confusing switching around and it stupidly tries to adjust the TV's volume at times & who knows what devices are on or off at any time or what mode it is in.Ack.

A lucky trip to the dealer introduces us to the Harmony remote.I am surprised other remotes have not been outlawed yet. This sucker downloads exact codes for your exact components off of the web (via USB cable to your computer) & then just controls everything, easily.

Mission accomplished. His low budget system sounds better than my high budget system, since it is dialed in better than mine + the speakers are compensated for, which I can't even do on my system.(Sigh.)Soon I will have to demote my Denon AVR 5700 to the bedroom and get a shiny new Denon receiver with the Audyssey Labs tech for the living room. (Oh Poor wallet!) Thanks to the Harmony remote it all is easily & intuitively controlled from just one remote.(Yippee!)I am now another proud owner of a Harmony H688 remote. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Point 5 Mk II multichannel home-theater speaker system from Athena Technologies packs eye-pleasing style, high technology, and great sound quality into a small but powerful system. This award-winning set consists of 4 identical Athena Technologies S.5 bookshelf/satellite speakers and a C.5 center-channel speaker, all designed to reproduce the 5 primary channels of a 5.1 DVD or HDTV surround signal: front left/right, rear left/right, and front center.

For the ".1" low-frequency effects channel, Athena recommends its AS-P300 or AS-P400, which are optimized for use with the S.5 speakers. Any powered subwoofer with a continuously variable crossover (low-pass filter) should be flexible enough for a successful pairing, however (it'll just take more listening and adjusting to find the right crossover setting).

All speakers use black, high-gloss finish with silver baffles designed to make them appear smaller than they really are. Each speaker uses a .5-inch Tetron-dome tweeter and 1 (in the satellites) or 2 (in the center speaker) 4-inch high-performance, injection-molded, polypropylene cone woofers. The speakers are rear-ported to enhance bas output, and they're magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion in your TV or computer monitor.

The S.5s offer flexible placement options, high power handling (20 to 100 watts RMS per channel), and massive sound. They're timbre matched for use with Athena's SCT series models or its Audition series speakers. The C.5 center-channel speaker's small size and dynamic output permit broad placement options with no sacrifice in sound quality.

The mounting brackets included with the S.5 speakers use one of the sturdiest and simplest designs available. The brackets require no special tools and allow flexible angles so you can place the speakers where you need to and aim the sound toward your seating positions.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's TC-WE475 dual-well cassette player/recorder offers high quality and plenty of great features, including dual auto-reverse playback. When coupled with the deck's relay play feature, dual auto-reverse means you can enjoy up to three hours of continuous music from two 90-minute cassettes. One tape well plays, the other records. You can set the recording input level using a dedicated control or rely on Sony's auto level-setting feature to choose the most appropriate level for your tape (this works best on dynamically limited material such as pop music). Choose from normal- and high-speed dubbing: normal speed for higher fidelity, high speed for greater convenience.

Sony has built the deck with high-density Permalloy tape heads for long life. For noise reduction, the TC-WE475 is outfitted with both Dolby B, the encoding standard used on most prerecorded cassettes, and Dolby C, which buys you another 10 to 20 dB or so of noise reduction beyond that offered by Dolby B (around 10 dB). Use Dolby when recording and, if a tape has been recorded using Dolby, when listening.

Two other technologies specifically heighten the quality of your recordings. During loud level peaks, Dolby HX Pro dynamically adjusts the bias signal (a supersonic and basically sacrificial tone your deck uses to push distortion out of the audible range), effectively letting you record "hotter"--that is, louder on tape--without compressing the high-frequencies of your program material. Secondly, an onboard MPX filter blocks the 19 kHz multiplex pilot tone of FM stereo broadcasts for proper Dolby noise-reduction tracking when you record off the air.

Other features include full-logic, feather-touch transport controls and twin electronic tape counters (one for each deck), which come in handy when you're making a compilation from a variety of source tapes. If you have a Sony audio/video receiver, you can operate the deck from your receiver's remote control.

3-0 out of 5 stars No remote automatically makes this less than perfect!
This cassette deck does have some really good features like HX Pro, Dolby B & C, music search (AMS, which looks for blank spaces to guess where the next song is), and full dubbing capabilities. I have it connected to my Onkyo A/V receiver via both output and input, since all of my components operate through the receiver. It works well this way and i can record from all sources with no problem.

I have a problem with the sound. It's not as good as the specs would have you believe. I've compared it with an Onkyo tape recorder and, although the numbers are similar (as far as wow & flutter and dynamic range), the Onkyo is much better (it was too expensive and had less features, but now i see why it cost more). The big thing is the lack of a remote. Sony has this funky A1II communication bus system, which is only truly useful if you buy all Sony components. I don't so it's useless to me. The excuse for not including the remote is that you can buy a Sony 300-CD Changer that can control this tape deck. I don't like it when companies use this method to obtain sales, so chances are i'll eventually resell this deck and get one with its own remote and better sound.

I paid $150 + tax at Circuit City. Same price as from J&R/Amazon and with shipping costs the price is almost equal. I'd say buy it if the price is $110 or less. That's all it's worth to me personally. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bose: The power of advertising.
Proof positive of the power of advertising, Bose has made a name (and money) for itself by designing mediocre quality audio equipment.
Unlike AKG or Sennheiser and other high-end manufacturers, Bose uses cheaper parts and less than average electrical engineering principals. These are highlighted especially in their speakers. Their principle of direct-reflection, while novel in 1969 is now incredibally antiquated and is far surpassed by high and mid-end manufacturers whose products outperform Bose. The company was so humiliated by Consumer Reports who compared Bose with other products that it sued (and lost).

Someone once said "There's a sucker born every minute". Now that's appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow and more wow
I connected the Bose Acoustimass 5 with an onkyo tx-8511 receiver and the sound is incrediable. It really fills my entire loft area with lifelike sound. Definately a great speaker!

3-0 out of 5 stars Average but not terrible
First, I bought these for the sound, not because I'm ultra-concerned about the aesthetics of my family room. In any event, I don't understand why other 3 piece systems sell for this or more and get away with it. The sound is decent, crystal clear, bass is not quite cut out for Ludacris but otherwise tight and controlled. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a solid deal. Paired with a low-distortion high-watt amp, these aren't the best speakers you've ever heard, but they will provide you with decent stereo sound...

Some of these reviews are unbelievable. Can you believe the person who writes, "I have had mine for 3 years now and have not once been able to hear the actors speaking during a movie". Yeah, sure...real believable.

I have owned this speaker for about a year, and dialogue is crystal clear, and a big improvement over my previous center channel speaker. I have this speaker plugged directly into my surround sound receiver's center channel plug, not into a Bose subwoofer unit, and it still works great.

You won't be disappointed with this speaker. At the $200 center channel speaker level, it is king. If you don't like it, don't complain about it, just return it. Bose has an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee.

2-0 out of 5 stars weak sound
I bought this primarily based on the BOSE reputation as well as the fact that it would sit nicely on top of the TV and fit in my stand.

I could not have been more disapointed. I was replacing a KLH 3 way center channel, and the sound was not even close to that.
The sound was weak, with little presence. After bringing up the center channel 12db and dropping the left and right channels -10db I could finally hear the dialogue from the center channel. I was not expecting bells and whistles, but I was expecting that I could actually hear the dialogue CLEARLY, and without a 22db difference in loudness between center and left/right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This
Like everyone else has said, this thing is a waste of money. I have had mine for 3 years now and have not once been able to hear the actors speaking during a movie. I thought it was my tuner, but it must be this piece of garbage

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than it's reputation!
I almost didn't order this based on the poor reviews and Consumers Reports findings. I needed a thin center speaker to go with the acoustimass cubes - this was the logical choice. After researching it at length there were mixed reviews with many negative comments. I called Cruthfield and the Bose Outlet to get their opinions. They were surprised to hear that there were negative comments. The Bose outlet advised theirs sounded great and noted it must be hooked directly to the receiver - not the module like the cubes. I have had the speaker for a couple weeks and it sounds great. I have two other surround systems, one high end and a lower end system and the Bose performs admirably for such a compact system. The articulation of words coming from the center speaker sounds like a real person. I don't understand the bad reviews - unless it's not being connected properly. Worked for me - and as most retailers note you can always send it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker - Well worth the money!
I would have to say that I'm a bit surprised by the number of negative reviews for this exceptional product. I purchased a Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker as soon as Bose started selling them. Given the overwhelming quality that is always associated with Bose speakers and my past experience with their speakers in the 401's and 301's; this choice, for me, was an easy one.

If you're like myself and the years has done a bit of a job on your hearing, the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker and the proper settings on your receiver will make a world of difference in your home theater system and ultimately your movie watching experience. With those proper settings on your receiver, this speaker will beautifully bring the dialogue out in your favorite movies that has previously been somewhat drowned out by the other speakers in your system and you will soon find yourself rarely asking what it was that they said!

Along with the exceptional quality in speakers that Bose is known for, this speaker will sit right there on top of your television set and as it is magnetically shielded, it will not have an effect on your television set at all.

I highly recommend the Bose VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker to any and all that are in the market for a center channel speaker and are of a mood to get the highest quality product available without spending way too much money. I've used one for years and have been thoroughly happy with it, only recently replacing it on one system with a Bose Acoustimass system but that VCS-10 is right there, leading the way on another system! For years of quality output, you'd be hard pressed to do better for the meager price! {ssintrepid} ... Read more
