With optional computer software and interface cable, you can access a computer mapping database to load the coordinates for points of interest (POIs) into the GPS 500. What is WAAS?
GPS receivers have an accuracy of about 15 meters, but you can get to as close as 3 meters with a WAAS-enabled receiver. WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System, which is a network of satellites and ground stations (in North America) that were designed to improve the accuracy and ensure the integrity of information coming from GPS satellites. Originally implemented by the FAA for aviation use, WAAS is particularly useful for serious outdoors enthusiasts as well as for precise in-city navigation.

Power and Size
The GPS 500 is powered by two AA batteries (not included). It measures 4.7 x 2.3 x 1.5 inches and weighs 5.3 ounces without batteries.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star is Too Good a Rating!
Repeating the sentiment of the earlier reviews? Yes, I am. Important to do so? I'd say, yes, it is, since you might think the other three reviewers were just unlucky.

The Cobra 500 is absolutely useless. It locks onto the required 3 satellites ... sometimes. Usually not. But when it does lock on, it loses them within a couple of minutes. On the other hand, when you look at all the features listed in their literature and compare it to the modest price, you think it's too good to be true. Unfortunately, it is. Truly a P.O.S.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing comes close to a COBRA! Don't you!
I purchased (through the Air Miles rewards program) the COBRA GPS500, not once, but TWICE. I first purchased the unit and believed it to be faulty it performed so poorly. Signal acquisition time seemed "forever" and it frequently lost satellite lock. On several occasions, between establishing lock, loosing lock and again re-establishing lock, the unit tells me I've moved upwards to one half mile whereas I've remained stationary, only changing the direction the unit was pointing. Simply changing the direction the unit was pointing (like changing direction in your car or boat) was enough to loose satellite lock! Very poor! I was able to exchange the original unit (unfortunately NOT able to return it) and when I received the replacement unit, it, like the first one, performs very, very poorly. The features offered on the unit would led you to believe it would "shine in the dark," whereas in actual fact, it is the poorest of any GPS unit I've ever used. And to add insult to injury, while I was awaiting deliver of this second unit, believing the first one faulty, I wasted an additional $100.00 by purchasing the PC interface cable, power cord and auto mount. What is that COBRA slogan: "Nothing comes close to a COBRA" You better believe it! Not even a satellite signal is able to get close!

1-0 out of 5 stars The worse of all GPS'
I've just bought this gps , and I'm gonna tell you I'm totally dissapointed with this unit.At the same time my father bought a Garmin eTrex unit and it's much better. I now regret all the fun I've made about his GPS and mine because mine has 18 satellite connection and his just 12. Fisrt of all the Garmin connects in about 45 second while the Cobra in 2 minutes.
Meanwhile the Garmin gets 9 sats the Cobra only gets 5. Now I'm working with UTM coordinates and the Garmin shows me all the info I need while the Cobra doesn't.
The unit handling is friendly user for the Garmin while the Cobra doesn't.
An overall qualification 0 out of 10.

1-0 out of 5 stars A truely terrible GPS unit
I purchased a Cobra GPS 500 unit to upgrade from my base model Garmin Etrex. I had thought the 18 channels and FAST circuitry would make it operate better then my Etrex. I was sadly disappointed. The Cobra will not hold satellite lock in any kind of cover at all. I am an experienced GPS user and outdoorsman who does a lot of hunting, and I can tell you without any doubt that the Cobra GPS 500 is totally useless for use in the woods. The Cobra GPS 500 loses satellite lock in areas where my Garmin Etrex held it easily. (This situation appears to be common to the entire Cobra GPS line because I have a friend who purchased a GPS 100 and he complains about the same thing.) To top things off, I contacted Cobra Customer Service about these problems and they wouldn't even respond to my email. So what you have here is a truely terrible product backed by terrible customer service. I would recommend that any potential buyers of this product avoid it at all cost, and spend their money on a Garmin or Magellan unit instead. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GPS 100: only good as a paperweight
This unit can almost never lock onto a satelite. When it does it is innaccurate. I am returning it.

1-0 out of 5 stars GPS loses signal and cannot reacquire
This is one of the worst GPS units I have used. The keys are not intuitive, the battery cover does not fit correctly (how can it be IPX7 water resistant compliant as advertised?), the unit loses GPS lock, when GPS lock is lost it cannot reacquire it.

The screens are nice in that you can configure the information, but the unit is not as flexible as say a Magellan Meridian.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Bad
I am new to the GPS user world and had high hopes for this unit. Its primary use was going to be simple for hunting & hiking help. I have read several negative reports that describe fairly accurately the same troubles I have. To be brief, my complaints are: Accuracy - horizontally off by 100 to 500 ft, vertically (altimeter) off by up to thousands of feet; Satellite lock - unreliable no matter what is or is not overhead, even on clear days; Tracking - unit seems to freeze after first waypoint direction is established, but walking in that direction the unit does not always update and is unreliable.

I have other Cobra products that are great, however the most disappointing thing about thie unit is that the advertisement of features is at best inaccurate and at worst misleading. It seems that the unit is working like the rest, but certainly without the improved capabilities expounded by Cobra.

Update: Cobra replaced the unit with a new one with no questions asked. Still problematic but due to Cobra Customer Service being proactive, I raised the rating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, basic GPS...
If you want a GPS that will tell you where to turn left to get on the Turnpike, this isn't it. But if you want to know exactly where you are on the planet, the Magellan 310 and 315 do an excellent job of it, with full 12-channel satellite tracking, the highest available. The nobs are complicated at first, but most guys like learning that sort of thing. This is basically the perfect gift for geeky dads or hikers.

BTW, the screen on the 310 and 315 as well as the features are superior to the eTrex basic model, although that model is far more ergonomic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good bargain for connecting to laptop computer
The Magellan 310 is an old, discontinued GPS receiver. I bought the Magellan 310 at $30 at a local chain department store. As I suspected, the unit displays the coordinates in only 4 digits of "minutes" (A.K.A. DD MM.MM format). Modern GPS receivers display 5 digits of minutes. Unfortunately this means the Magellan 310 can only display coordinates to within +/- 60 feet in each dimension (North/South and East/West).

When I hooked the Magellan 310 to a laptop computer with a serial cable, the 310 outputs up to 6 digits of Minutes - more than sufficient for any task. So if you're looking for a bargain priced GPS receiver for use with a laptop for something like NetStumbler or
DeLorme Street Atlas, I think this is a good bargain if you can find it under $50. Be sure to budget for extra cost of
a serial cable (about $20) as the cable is not
included with the serial cable.

Unfortunately, you can't transfer saved waypoints between your computer and the 310 with the serial cable.

I also think this GPS receiver is perfectly suitable for situations where high precision isn't required. For example, finding your way back to your car after hiking in the woods doesn't really require 3 Meter precision like modern GPS receivers have - the Magellan 310 should get you within 20 Meters (about 65 feet). That should get you close enough to see your car.

One of the most popular reasons for buying a GPS receiver is for geocaching. Most people that want to try out geocaching look for a low-priced GPS receiver so they can try the sport and decide whether or not they like it. While it might be tempting to buy the Magellan 310, I strongly suggest spending a few more dollars on a GPS receiver with 5 digit minute precision like the Magellan 315 or the Magellan Sportrak. It is technically possible to geocache with the Magellan 310, but you'll have to manually adjust for the 4 digit minute precision. Explaining how this adjustment works is beyond the scope of this review, but trust me when I say you want something better than the Magellan 310 for geocaching.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get The Magellan 315 - for a few dollars more - Worth it!
I had purchased a 310 and a 315 because they run out of the Magellan 315. What a difference! To start the batteries do not run out that often, the 315 is more accurate somehow, dont ask me why; just comapring side by side the 310 even though a bit smaller seems less "in the Game"
I gave my 310 to my son, its a godd starter GPS, if you are serious about GPS handhelds, get the Magellan 315 for a few dollars more. Worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost at 5000 ft MSL
Never got lost really...but this little unit is great as a back up to electronic navigation in Aircraft. Its nice to know, if you are a bit challenged of where your are at at 5000ft...this will tell you the direction and distance to you destination airport. A nice little comfort to have when you are in unfamilar terrain. A neat trick...just load the GPS coordinates of the airports in you area...and never be lost again (or feel like your lost). Remember Aviate then Navigate...keep your eyes outside the cockpit most of the time! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
Let me start by saying my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8200.I wish I would have read the previous reviews before purchasing this product, as I would have seen that it wouldn't have worked.

I was very disappointed with many aspects of the product.
(1) No mention of any incompatabilities whatsoever.
(2) No software or drivers were included (except for Microsoft Streets & Trips, which is a completely separate product)
(3) Minimal documentation, and NONE concerning the setup of the PCMCIA option.
(4) Pharos website, www.pharosgps.com, has a terrible support area and no relevant downloads or information for my problem.

Needless to say, this is going back in the morning, and definitely not recommended for Dell laptop users.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Street does not provide turn by turn directions
Streets and Trips does not provide active turn by turn directions. This package simply provides where you are when the GPS is active.Streets and Trips does provide directions to a given location; however, Pocket Streets and Trips does not provide this functionality.

I recommend that you buy the Pharos bundle that contains the Ostia software.Ostia provides turn by turn directions as well as voice and audio prompts.

BTW, I have 2 Dell Latitudes that suffer from the TI PCMCIA chipset.Has anyone figured out how to make this device work with the TI chipset?Pharos tech support is aware of this problem and have no solutions to date.Bob Baker, Pharos, and I await your answer to this question.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of incompatabilities with PCMCIA slot on laptops
I have a Dell Latitude laptop with a Texas Instruments PCMCIA controller - this controller is incompatible with the i360 model from Pharos, and I was not able to find out until after the product had shipped to me and I tried it out.

Make sure you check the manufacturer of your controller before you purchase this product! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ambicon GPS pro
I purchased this product for use treking. The gps unit using the built in antenna will not pickup more than 1 satellite . This does not give a fix. The unit is not usable using the built in antenna. If I connect the external with the 8 foot cord the unit works good (tracks 5 or more satellites and gives a very good fix. (22 feet cep) I can use the device if I velcro the antenna to the top of my hat but then I have an 8 foot cord dangling. Ambicom tech support suggests laying the Pocket-pc with the gps unit on the ground and waiting 2 minutes. Results no better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice, so far so good (3 weeks)
Bought this w. an iPAQ 2215, installation was very straightforward using the Quick Installation Guides. I had to change the COM port (as described in the guide), and after several attempts, COM 7 worked. It seems to switch COM ports from time to time, I don't know why.

I need the external antennae indoors, and especially to initially acquire the satellites, but within my car, it appears to be just sensitive enough without (tried on a clear day). I still mostly use the external antennae in the car, I'm hoping the extra sensitivity will perhaps reduce the power drain. Although the antennae has a magnet on the back, there's usually nothing in the car to stick it to, so I just wrap it around the rear view mirror.

I think the difference between this product and Ambicom's non "Pro" version, is this version's navigation software isn't a 30-day trial version, its Space Machine's Pocketmap Navigator V2 (last years). I went to Space Machine's website to download a slightly newer version, and newer maps, all for free. I will probably pay the $30 for the latest V3 software upgrade. The current version very occasionally seems to hang, requiring a soft-reset of the iPAQ. Also, for some reason it had problems downloading maps, I had to manually remove partially downloaded "San Francsico" to get it to re-install correctly.

The mapping mostly works great, but there were a few problems, in Santa Monica it tried to direct me off a cliff, because it erroneously thought there was a connector road from Arizona street to the coast highway (there isn't). Also, it couldn't find Studio City, CA at all, I believe because its part of North Hollywood. It also refused to believe that certain address ranges exist on certain streets, but I suppose this is to be expected since numbering can be very idiosyncratic. Lastly, it misses an occasional better route in San Francisco (e.g. through Golden Gate Park), probably because those roads are closed to traffic on Sundays. Fair enough, it can't be expected to handle that situation. Also, it's voice prompting usually mis-pronounces the various Spanish names in California.

I don't know if the V3 software with the V3 maps, will help. Still, overall, the software works well, most of the time.

Doesn't seem to drain power too fast (compared to say an 802.11b CF card). With everything at max power (the PDA's backlight, sound, etc., and no auto-turn-off), its probably good for a couple hours.

My only complaints with the Ambicom GPS Pro/iPAQ 2215 combo, mostly have to do with the iPAQ, but I'm writing it here because the problems really relate to its use w. GPS:

1. the speaker in the 2215 is too soft (at max volume) to hear the driving directions, given the background ambient noise in the car. Perhaps this isn't the 2215 's fault (other sounds, and voice notes are loud enough), but having the speaker on the back of the 2215 makes the problem worse. Using earbuds with the iPAQ to improve the volume, would be a bad idea, obviously.

2. The 2215 screen is too dark (at max brightness), given the relative daylight brightness in the car.

3. To store any useful amount of map data, you're going to need to add an SDIO memory card. I tried to store 3 SF Bay area counties (SF, San Mateo, Alameda) plus LA county, and it exceeds the available on-board memory in the 2215 (32 Mb). I added a 256 Mb SD card ..., and I can hold 2/3 of California, perhaps more, but that's all I needed. Make sure your PDA has an SDIO slot or more on-board memory.

4. Probably to be really useful in the car, it needs a "car kit" (mounting bracket, DC power supply, powered speakers, perhaps a way to mount the external antennae).

Still, its a very nice and inexpensive way to get GPS/Navigation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars very utilitarian
It works OK, but depending on where you put it, can obscure your vision. Also, it is prone to falling off as the temperature of whatever you've stuck it to rises and falls. One thing that works really well is the lock that secures the eMap to the device. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars had very little success with this item
Just bought a new laptop with no serial port, and wanted to still use my Magellan Meridian Marine to upload waypoints and also for auto navigation.Bought this adapter, and installed the device.XP told me the driver was not XP certified.Sure enough, it cause one crash after another. The only way I could get it to run was to connect the USB adapter before booting the laptop, then boot, then connect the gps, and only then it would give location info only to Delorme Streets. If I plugged the usb with gps running in while the laptop was running, it crashed the operating system or tried to reload the driver.Never could get it to download or upload waypoints with Delorme applications (Streets and Topo), so it was useless to me and I returned it. I spent an hour on the phone with Magellan tech help, who claimed they had never had this problem before, but I never could get it to work properly. ... Read more
