New King of the Hill !!
The Magellan Roadmate, quite simply, is currently the best auto gps available. I own the 700 (not yet available on this site, but available at Best Buy, along with the 500). Difference between the 500 and 700 is the 500 stores maps on compact flash cards (a 128 mb included w/ the 500) and the 700 has all of US and Canada built in on an internal 10 gig hard drive. Amazon currently advertises the 700 as having a 5 gig drive. They're wrong). Units are identical beyond that. The mapping is incredibly accurate, user friendly and intuitive. Voice prompts are clear and pleasant to listen to (male, female, or no voice user selectable). Screen (4") is clear, high resolution, and readable in all conditions, including bright sunlight. Like most recent units, the Roadmate will automatically re-calculate your route if you stray. Unlike other units, however, the Roadmate does it with amazing speed and accuracy. Because this is a WAAS enabled unit, it's accurate to within 12 feet of your position on the earth. I live in a spread-out, country part of Maryland, and this unit shows the detail of my dead end cul-de-sac!!

I could go on and on about the unique features of this product, but I'll save some bandwidth and just say it's well worth the price. It's world's beyond the competition from Garmin (except for their new 2610, which is a very nice unit, but is not WAAS enabled and some say the mapping database is not as good) and the other major players.

BTW, I'm a private pilot and I understand and have lots of experience with GPS.

Edit 12/5/03: I am still thrilled with this unit after daily usage. Amazing how accurate it is, even in congested and confusing Washington DC during rush hour. I'm convinced that the WAAS feature on GPS auto units is real important in the inner cities.

My first complaint: While the vent mount that comes with the unit is OK, Magellan should supply every conceivable other type of mount with a unit in this price range. I obtained, free of charge, their "gooseneck" suction cup windshield mount, and it is excellent. Should buyers have to pay extra for this? I don't think so. Their "beenbag" mount is also due out shortly. These can be handy when switching cars a lot. Garmin ships with multiple mounts. So should Magellan. I've forwarded my opinion to Magellan's marketing dept. That being said, my 5 star rating remains, as this product is really superb.

Excellent Auto Navigation System
The roadmate 500 (and it's larger brother the 700) are the cream of the crop when it comes to economical auto navigation systems. Make not mistake about it, this is NOT a general purpose GPS. The roadmate does one thing and one thing only -- it helps you navigate your auto. To start up, you download the area of interest into the device. It comes with a 128mb compact flash card and you can buy additional cards if you so desire. Areas are typically things like an entire state or for large states like California, "Norther California". From there, you just tell it where you want to go with it's excellent on screen keyboard or select a location by name from it's points of interest database. The POI database contains restaurants, malls, hotels, and other things of interest to travellers, but you won't find the nearest chair store -- it's not a complete yellowpages. You can specify an exact street address or a street and cross street. From there, you just follow the directions. The screen is large and bright, but there's no need to look at it while driving. The voice prompts are excellent. You are warned when you are approaching a turn or freeway entrance/exit and you are told if it's left or right. When I drive to my home, the it tells me "approaching destination on your left" and then "you have arrived". If I were to stop the car exactly when it told me, I'd literally be staring out the window at my front door. It's locations are precise. This precision speaks to the quality of the built-in database. Another lovable thing about the voice prompts is when it knows you have a complex maneuver coming up and warns you "approaching right turn followed by a freeway entrance on your left". The voice navigation is almost as good as a real human copilot. Overall, a great product that excels at it's intended usage. If you've used general purpose GPS's hooked to laptops for auto-navigation, this is a whole new experience in terms of quality and sophistication.

Initial Set up
The unit requires registration and an authorization number from the manufacture before maps can be loaded into the compact flash card. This requires determining the CF card ID when registering. Instructions for this procedure are very poor and navigating Magellan's web site is tricky at best. If you enter the CF ID incorrectly, you cannot store any maps in the unit even if you are provided an authorization code for the CF card. Beware!

No Customer Service
Received my 500 the other night. Also bought a 1 GB compact flash card.

Started to install maps on PC, turns out CD #4 scratched pretty badly, so maps won't install. Called Magellan support, told to send them a fax with receipt and that they would get the CDs out to me. Emphasized that I really needed the maps for a trip and asked if I could receive a tracking number. Was told to call back next morning. Called 3 times starting the next morning (20 plus mins wait each time) and sent a fax - no response to any. Spoke to another rep whowas UNABLE to get my information - said I had to talk to the original support rep - what? They don't have a system where they log this stuff?

I also sent an email through their website - you know one of those 24 hour response promises? Well, it has been 72 hours and nothing.

Also went online to "unlock" the 1 GB compactflash. Lets see.. an option for 256MB, one for 512MB, but nothing for 1GB. A guy from support tells me to select 512MB.. what, would adding one more option to the website kill them?

Just truly inexcusable level of support for a product this pricey. There are better options - I suggest you check them out. This is going back.

Can't travel without it
My wife and I drove to L.A. with this RoadMate 500. It helped us so much in several ways.

1) We felt it took shorter time than before because we never needed to slow down for looking up highway exits.
2) We were never worried exiting to thew wrong street. The device always instructed us to go back to the right route.
3) We drove like the L.A. local people. Many times, we used the local roads when there were heavy traffic in the highways.

Two only complaints are
1) the device crashed twice in the trip, we lost all the addresses and settings, big deal! We just re-entered the address and it works again.
2) since roadmate is not powered by batteries, it is not meant to be portable at all. I wish Magellan offered a fix mounted solution. We had to unmount it everytime we parked because we don't want people to break in our car.

Overall, it is stress killer. We so enjoyed the whole trip with it. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Good news & bad news
I wish I had read the reviews here before following the manufacturer's claim, which was reprinted in the product description on Amazon. The good news is that it's well made. The bad news is that, contrary to the claim that it holds all your GPS cables, brackets, and the unit itself, it's only good for carrying or storing the GPS unit itself. Also, the price is excessive considering that it doesn't do as claimed. Do yourself a favor - and spare yourself some disappointment while saving some money - take your GPS to an electonics store (CompUSA, Best Buy, etc.) and buy a good padded camera bag which will hold everything for about 2/3 the price.

A Carrying Case with No Room To Carry Things
In the writeup for the Garmin carrying case it says that it has room for the StreetPilot series GPS as well as the necessary cables. I was shocked at how small this case was when received. I can fit the GPS unit in it but not all the cables and the ones I could get in I had to cram into it. If you are looking for a carrying case that will carry all the components of the streetpilot GPS this is not it.

Nice, but could be bigger
I bought the carrying case to use with the Garmin Street Pilot Deluxe package. With the case you can snugly fit the Garmin Street Pilot unit alone. However, when trying to also put it the cigarette adapter/speaker, both don't fit without having the zipper on top partially opened. Also, don't even consider trying to store the bean bag mount in the case.

I do like the fact that the bottom of the case has a protective cushion so the unit can be stored face down.

I think it would be nice if they had another sized bag -- one which can store the unit, adapter cable, plus the bean bag mount all together. This would be the ideal size for those who want to carry the unit and all the accessories at once. ... Read more

Best buy in a fixed mount, charting GPS
Plotting and map availability have really come of age in this unit. Like all of Garmin's products the 162 is user friendly and menu driven. Newer units are WAAS acurate and come with a PC interface cable. All functions can be reached in a couple of button hits. There are several pages, map, position and navigation. Each has its own menu, a second swipe of the menu button brings you to the main menu. Anyone familiar with a windows computer will be able to use it almost immediately. Garmin has also added a nifty tide predictor and almanac feature. The alphanumeric waypoint naming feature is also a plus.

The 162 comes in two versions, one with an internal antenna for boats without tops (or just a bimini) which saves you from mounting the antenna, and one with a more traditional mushroom antenna for hard tops or t-tops.

The CD-ROM map includes all of the US and allows you pick and choose your area of coverage. It lacks the depth feature and hyper accuracy of Garmin's new, top of the line, blue chip models. But that's a price feature.

Best in its price range.
I bought this unit after narrowing my choices down to it and the ... Standard Horizon. I went with the Garmin because of it's increased upgradability. Garmin continually updates the firmware packages for its GPS units. For instance, this unit came out before WAAS was available, but a simple, and free, download from the Garmin website added WAAS capability in a matter of minutes using the supplied AC/PC adapter. And, most importantly, Blue Chart map detail is now available in MapSource CD ROM form. This is the best map data available today (as detailed as any paper chart), and with the MapSource system, you can transfer as much or as little data as you need to your GPS. The BlueChart CD ROM adds immeasurably to this product. Negatives: the addition of the BlueChart detail slows the redraw times of the screen considerably. Also, the one area where the Standard Horizon outshines it is in screen clarity, but this unit is good enough in that respect to still come out on top, in my opinion. A solid 4 out of 5 stars. ... Great product with a few shortfalls
This product is great but has a few shortfalls:

PROS:

* Clear precise voice prompts
* Large, clear display
* Excelent mapping and on-screen drawing of maps
* Quick routing and re-routing
* Night display mode is great

CONS:

* No EXIT numbers for Freeway exits
* No sub-categorization - say if you select a restaurant, it doesn't sub-categorize into types of restaurants, which the GARMIN does very well. Same goes for other categories.
* Couldn't find shopping centers like Best Buy or Home Depot
* The auto-contrast and auto-brightness doesn't seem to work too well, at night the display is too bright for comfort and you need to manually dim it
* Couldn't even find Showcase Cinema using POI
* Map is backdated - even my 2 yr old GARMIN seemed to have a more updated POI

Customer Support is awefull by the way!

Dare to Dream!!
This product was excellant. I have used it for 4 months now and find very little at fault with it. I use the 500 for work and usully put in over 20 addresses a day, it always gets me there! It takes a little time to learn but it is like any other electronic device; to use it properly you must READ THE MANUAL. don't listen to the negative reviews of people who couldn't get it to work right because they were to impatient to read the manual.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM! FREEZES COMPUTER! RETURNED!

I bought this item the other day, because I thought "What a good deal! you get the windshield mount and a 256MB card!!" Then 1 day letter I returned it! There are MANY positives...but they dont matter in the least bit if your machine DOESNT WORK!

NEGATIVES:
1) BUGGY SOFTWARE FREEZES: The software that comes with the Roadmate 500 to load on the maps is BUGGY to say the least! Everytime I tried to load the maps in my region, It would get about half way done, then just freeze up. Then Id have to restore the corrupt card, and start again. I NEVER sucessfully downloaded the maps, and therfor I had to return the item. And this is on a BRAND NEW Pentium 4 Dell Desktop that WELL exceeds all of the system specs.
2) LIMITED AMOUNT OF MAP DATA: It is VERY decieving in that they tell you "You get 4 CD-ROMS with ALL maps from the US an and CANADA!! Just upload your maps and you're ready to go!!!" But what they DONT tell you is that you have 45 days to decide which regions you want, and then after 45 days your card locks up and THATS IT!! You can no longer download maps from the CD-ROMS unless you want to shell out more cash. This wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that I live in NJ and I was UNABLE to fir all of NJ, NY, CT, and PA on the 256MB cards...and I travle to ALL of these states from time to time. This is NOT fair! I spend almost $900 and I cant even transfer additional maps after 45 days??? This is GREEDY to say the least!!!
3) CARD NOT BIG ENOUGH: The 256MB card DOES NOT hold that much data! Dont expect to hold more then 2-4 states on the card. But since the map of the US is broken down into "regions" you might be able to fit only 1/2 of one particular state and not the rest because it is in a different region and your card is full. YES...THATS RIGHT...Some states are split between 2 or more regions!!
4) LOOSE AC ADAPTOR: The AC adaptor is VERY loose and may slip out and cause it to shut off randomly.
5) NO PLASTIC COVOR ON SCREEN: Ok, not to be petty...but when I buy an electronic device with a nice color screen, I LOVE to peel off that nice sheet of adhesive plastic that protects the screen from scratches. The Magellin Roadmate 500 DOES NOT have that on its screen, and I mean, without it...it just doesn't feel NEW!

POSITIVES:
1) NICE SCREEN: The screen looks great...nice and bright!
2) GREAT SATILLITE RECEPTION: This machine will locate a satillite in as little as 1 minute and no more then 4 minutes. Thats not too bad. And once it finds it it LOCKS on!
3) GOOD VOICE PROMPT: Both the woman and the man sound very pleasent.

In conclusion, DO NOT BUY THE MAGELLAN 500 PLUS! If you are springing for this item, go the extra $150 and Buy the MAGELLAN 700! It has a 10 gigabyte hard drive in it with ALL of the maps from the US and CANADA already in there. It is "plug and play" which means you take it out of the bos, stick it to your car's windshield, turn it on, and DRIVE! No computer needed, no hassles, no computer crashes!

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!! PERIOD! GET THE MAGELLAN 700!!!

Works fine with my Legend
Echoing a previous reviewer: it IS compatible with Garmin's eTrex Legend!!! My only complaint is that the GPS unit seems to sit higher on the dash than necessary when using this mounting device, potentially affecting driver visibility.

You can find less expensive GPS units than Brunton's Multi-Navigation System GPS, but you won't find another that offers as many functions. In addition to its Global Positioning System (GPS), the unit features a barometer, an altimeter, and a compass. It's also a rugged, expedition-quality device that's waterproof and will function accurately in temperatures ranging from minus 13 degrees to 158 degrees.

It's not a beginner's tool. There's no built-in map, so your coordinates are displayed in latitude and longitude. If you're unfamiliar with using this system to find your position, an extra source such as the Compass & Map Navigator book (recommended by Brunton) will quickly teach you how to find your location by using the GPS and a map. You can also pick up the optional PC cable, which lets you hook up the Multi-Navigator to a PC and download waypoints and routes from the included Global Map Planner software.

Finding your latitude and longitude is only one way to use the Multi-Navigator. It's easy to set waypoints--simply save and label locations with names such as "car" and "cabin." You can then use the Multi-Navigator to lead you to that waypoint by pointing in the direction of the location with its internal compass and displaying the distance in miles.

To test it, we wandered out into the fog-enshrouded trails of a nearby state park until we were thoroughly turned around. We were then able to use the Multi-Navigator to easily find our way back. Its distance and direction are as the crow flies, so there were a few turns and twists, but it kept us pointed in the right direction.

The Multi-Navigator's barometer is able to provide a rough forecast for the upcoming 12 hours, offering predictions such as Sunny, Partly Cloudy, and Storm Warning. Although not as precise as our local meteorologist, the Navigator did accurately predict clouds moving into our area. (Brunton recommends staying in the same location for at least six hours for the most accurate weather report.)

The Multi-Navigator also features an altimeter, accurate to within three feet, which aids in the waypoint settings (the Navigator included the distance we'd have to travel up or down to reach our desired waypoint).

Numerous other features--such as time, date, temperature, and sunrise and sunset times for location--round out the Navigator's comprehensive set of navigation features. If you need a rugged, high-quality aid for your global expedition, or if you just routinely get lost in the woods, the Multi-Navigator is worth consideration. --J. Curtis

What's with the Amazon Price
How is it that Amazon, who claims to have lowest prices, is selling this GPS for $399.00, when Brunton, the manufacturer, has a suggested retail of $359.00?! I've seen this unit listed at $299.00 else where, and that includes shipping. Try Kooters.com

Nice
I've owned my unit for about a year now and I have to say that this is definitely a tool not a toy. This unit does nothing to diminish Brunton's excellent reputation. They've recently released a more user friendly GPS unit with more bells and whistles to more directly compete with the Garmin units, but there are still solid reasons why you should consider using this unit.

The altimeter, barometer and so forth work well enough. The compass feature also works well, although I usually use a handheld in the field also. The unit is also quite rugged, definitely more rugged than most of the competitors out there. It is also become reasonably priced; you should be able to buy a unit for considerably less than the $399 retail price if you search long enough.

My only complaints: ease of use. I like the fact that the screen is backlight and easy to read, but the buttons are awkwardly labeled and learning the nuances of this machine can take some time. The owner's manual could also be a little better in terms of actually providing you with scenarios on how to use the features correctly. I also wish they would hurry up and produce a USB data cable so that I can use this unit with my Mac; serial ports are getting old.

MNS For Mountain Hiking
I have used the MNS for about a year hiking in the mountains of Colorado. I decided I needed a GPS because I started climbing mountains without well-defined trails; I climbed the wrong mountain several times. I used the Brunton MNS in parallel with the Garmin Etrex Vista for about a month.

The MNS is more accurate than advertised when finding positions. When entering a waypoint on the "way out" of a daylong hike, the MNS usually registered "found" within 5 feet of the landmark that I recrossed and recognised on the "way back." The MNS can acquire a signal in light forests near tree line, but not in the heavy forests of Ponderosa Pine at lower altitudes. The heavy smoke generated by the fire burning West of Colorado Springs this Summer killed satellite acquisition.

The altimeter is not accurate to within three feet, even given that the weather is clear and constant. It is of equivalent accuracy to my Sunto Vector altitude watch which is rated accurate to 10 feet; both must have the same internal mechanism. If I start climbing at 10,000 feet and climb to 14,000 feet, both devices will register about 13,900 feet. Interestingly enough, both devices always register low, which allows me to intuit the real altitude. On that closed loop between 10,000 and 14,000 feet, both mechanisms will register within 10 feet of 10,000 feet on return to the starting point.

The MNS mechanism is capable and has kept me from getting lost several times when weather on the return trip became bad.

The Tracklog function has little value because there is a very small limiting number of collected waypoints; a user is bound to miss that bend in the trail or special landmark that he would enter if he were setting waypoints manually.

The MNS is somewhat more accurate than the E-Trex Vista in finding positions. The E-Trex is far more user friendly in entering data. It might take twice as long to manually enter a route using the MNS vis-a-vis the E-trex.

I wear reading glasses. I cannot view the E-trex map or any of the displays without my glasses. I can view all the displays on the MNS without glasses. This was the ultimate reason I kept the MNS and returned the E-Trex Vista.

The Map on the Vista is so tiny as to be of little value. When I hike, I print a map of my route from my mapping software on plasticized paper; this printed map is far more convenient than the tiny map on the Vista.

Buying second hand Brunton.
My aim was to get a GPS with no map capability in order to maintain good habits when navigating with visual checkpoints. The low battery consumption was also an important matter. The Brunton unit I got from Finalcall fulfills all my expectations. The very large screen, additional features such as the compass, the altimeter or the barometer in addition to a full GPS unit are perfect. I will use it mainly when making cross-country travel in a Cessna 172 as a complementary tool to classical navigation instruments. The service given by Finalcall has been perfect.

GPS Nut
After receiving the unit, I tried all the features it has. Wow!
It is an amazing gps. Great. It performance exactly as it said on the specifications especially under the thick forest trees. Without this I could be lost in the jungle during one of my weekend jungle trekking trip. Unbelievable. It even track signal under tiles roof in my house.
I have another gps of other brand (I wouldn't mention it brand name) it is of no use in that conditions eventhough it has all the other features which I think is great. These are good when I use it in lake and sea.But totally useless under thick foliage without satellites signal.
Trekking under the compass mode is great when there isn't any satellites signals. It saves battery. You wouldn't get lost in any conditions.Great feature!
Don't go jungles (from my part of the world a lot of jungles here are virgin jungles) trekking withou this gps. You can leave others gps at home at least it save you space and weight in your backpacks. Believe me.

Extra Features Are Inaccurate and Not Worth The Money
As a compass, this unit appears to function properly. The additional features are a waste of money. The altimeter must constantly be adjusted (During the course of a drive from to NY to VT, it will be off by several hundred feet). If the car is turned off, the altimeter must be recalibrated. The Weather Predictor has always said SUN... never anything else. I made the mistake of hardwiring the power cable to my 12Volt power port myself (not purchasing the PNI wiring kit). This voided my warranty, and I could not return the unit. I wired it 2 months after I bought the unit, the problems were always there.

Do Not Do Business with this company
I bought one of these computers and it broke within two months. They sent me a replacement and it broke. Now they will not even look at it. They said it is 'probably out of warranty and too expensive to bother fixing'. I could accept a defective product if they had good customer service, or vice versa. Instead, they have a crappy product and worse customer service. Avoid them!

Waist of money
This item is a waste of money. You can get the same benifets by reading the elv. signs in the mountains.It will keep a good compas heading but that is all.

Not Reliable
I found this compass disappointing. As a sailor I am use to the accuracy of Loran, GPS and marine compasses. I suspect that the problem is not the instrument itself, but the difficulty of compensating for the magnetic influences in a car. The PNI often gives erroneous directional information. My unit has developed a defect after less than 6 months of infrequent use. The 'off' button doesn't work. The unit eventually turns itself off. It is an interesting gadget, but a good road map is a better value.

Great Features and Display
I have had other PNI compasses for the car but this one is the best. It has a great display and the calibration was a breeze. The barometer and altimeter are a bit unstable but what do you expect when you are using it in a moving vehicle. I also purchased the hard wire kit from PNI which is fantastic. Once wired, it automatically turns the unit on when you start the car and turns on the backlight at night. I wired it right into the wiring of the 12V power outlet and it works fine. ... Read more
