4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for everyday travelling but not serious study
As an American living in Europe, I have found this translator very useful. The comparatively large number of languages included ensures that I can communicate, on a basic level, in almost every country I visit. There are quite a few phrases included, and they are catagorized by situation (Emergencies, Dining, etc). However, I generally use the translator as a "point and talk" aid. It also helps when talking to people who speak a little English, but can't think of that "one word" they are trying to explain. The words in the databank are fairly extensive, but are, by no means, complete dictionaries.

Now, there are several drawbacks. This will not be helpful for those seriously studying a language. There are no genders, conjugation, or other grammatical aids. Also, the interface is somewhat difficult to use. To translate a word requires anywhere from 6 to 9 button pushes before you can enter the word. There is also no back light. The translator includes a databank, clock, currency converter, and some other features which I honestly have never used.

The bottom line is: If you want to be able to say "I want to eat dinner and stay in a nice hotel" in 11 languages, it is for you. If you want to compose an poem, or write a thesis on quantum physics in 11 languages...look elswhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars looking for persian electronic dictionaries
The electronic device is very nice, but I was looking for Persian electronic dictionaries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking For A Better Translator
This item is $42.99 at a local electronics store. Amazon's price is much better, but the product has shortcomings, so I returned it. It has a primitive screen and it lacks many useful phrases. It claims to have over 210,000 words and phrases, but it is not clear whether that is the number of words in any single language (which is the really relevant number), or whether it counts all the other languages' translations (in which case it multiplies the relevant number times the number of languages it offers). It also uses "button" batteries that I found to be expensive to replace. Other reviewers said they found other translators that are "1,000 times better" than this one. I would like to know which ones people have found to be better than this one, why they are better, how much they cost, and where they can be found. I am specifically looking for English/French in any available units.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very unhappy with this basic translator
I found a translator that is 10,000 times better then this one. I have returned this translator to Amazon

1-0 out of 5 stars An OK product - I've seen MUCH better.
I thought the Franklin was an OK translator. I also bought another translator from another store and I thought that one was 1000 times better. It had many more words and features and was much easier to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can this product translate French into English?
I would like to know ablut the ability of this electronic dictionary. Can this product translate French into English and vice versa? And can this do German into english and vice verse? If this can do that, I would like to order this product. If not, let me know another product which can do that, please. If possibly, I would like to be recommended a product that can traslate French, German into English and vice verse. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars interface poorly designed
I've used many electronic translators over the years. I bought this one as a fallback after Ectaco discontinued manufacturing reasonable one-language translators in its efforts to include too many languages in a single unit. This unit (the Lingo Euro 6 language translator) requires that you go through a time and date screen EVERY TIME you turn the unit on. It provides only a one-line display that produces only ONE word option per inquiry. It takes four (4) key strokes every time before you get to that one word (say, from English to French), and it takes five (5) key strokes to reset the translator EVERY TIME to translate a word going the opposite direction (say, from French to English). There are only 25,000 words per dictionary, which is fine if you want to translate "cat" and "dog," but the vocabulary is too rudimentary to translate anything more difficult, such as a foreign newspaper or exhibit descriptions at a museum. It is useless for translating words that have multiple meanings. No useage or context information is provided. There is so much emphasis on "Features" such as an alarm clock, a personal databank, a world time differential, a calculator, currency converter, metric-English measurements converter and so forth, that the unit thoroughly neglects its basic function: translation of foreign words in both directions. The keyboard interface is too cumbersome to use on a regular basis and the unit could best be described as a "toy" to play with, which probably accounts for its very low price.

Seven or eight years ago, you could easily buy reasonably-priced, useful one-language translators that contained lots of words and interpretive information. Franklin still makes an excellent English-Spanish translator with a huge vocabulary, verb conjugations and examples of use of the (proposed) foreign word in sentences. Ectaco once also manufactured a complete line of one-language translators jammed with lots of useful information, but they don't any longer, except for a speaks-English-only model that costs $400.00 and is designed primarily for Europeans wanting to speak English. The trend seems to be focused on jamming multiple languages into a single unit, with lots of extraneous non-essential marketing features, so that the translator becomes so cumbersome to use that it fails in its primary function. The other trend seems to be that new units are designed for foreign language speakers wanting to learn English, not for English speakers wanting to speak a foreign language. But whatever might be said of the current market of such devices, this particular unit is a toy designed for people who plan to see all of Western Europe in two weeks and who have no aspirations of actually communicating in the foreign language. A more language oriented traveler or business man would not find the Lingo Euro 6 a useful tool. A phrasebook or printed foreign language dictionary would be a far better choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea but disappointing
We used this on a recent trip to Europe. It's got about 6000 words per language which sounds like enough. However, they must have chosen a set based on common use rather than traveler use...we found almost no words on an Italian menu for example. Looking up a word requires: (1) turning it on (2) pressing translate (3) choosing the to and from language (4) selecting between word and phrase (5) typing some letters and scrolling to the word (6) pressing 'enter' -- enough steps that it really isn't faster than a phrase book or small dictionary. It has pre-formed phrases broken down by category. This sounds like a good idea but, in practice, you spend forever trying to figure out the correct category, scroll through the choices, then trying to guess another category. It also requires you to have a basic knowlege of verb forms as only the infinitives are provided and, if you do know what you are doing, it unfortunately doesn't provide gender of nouns (making it useless for students). On future trips, we're going back to pocket-sized phrase books/dictionaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Miracle
I used the Lingo Euro 6 on my last trip to Europe and it was my little savior! It's small enough to fit into your shirt pocket, but large enough to feel comfortable while you type in your words. It translated beautifully and really helped me out when I needed it most!

1-0 out of 5 stars It isn't much
Well, it isn't a Franklin product.

The problem with Lingo Euro 6 is its inability to identify a conjugated verb and then give you the infinitive. Another huge downside is that it doesn't conjugate verbs and has a much smaller vocabulary than the advertisment would have you believe.

As far as a tool to pick up the occasional word, it's fine. However, if you are studying any of those languages in-depth, you would be better off buying a 6 dollar dictionary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the alternative brand BESTA is supposedly BETTER for Chinese

which is expressed by amazon in the following format

country of origin: ?

battery requirement: two AAA
dimensions (in metric): 14.8 x 8.3 x 2.2 cm

USA customers must call Franklin for an RMA (Return Merchandise

They suggest using "A TRACKABLE FORM OF DELIVERY".

Although amazon seems to carry only ONE Besta model (Korean),
I personally would hunt down the Besta Chinese thingamajig,
since what the Franklin costs is no small potatoes (for a device
that MIGHT be inferior to the one by Besta). Hope this helped.

4-0 out of 5 stars This one worked fine!
I purchased this electronic dictionary a year and half ago for my mom to learn new English words. The one that I got worked fine! And it's still working fine. My mom loves it! And she learned a lot of new English words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh My God!!!
I never bought this but come on! It just looks horrible - and Franklin?! I recommend buying from Besta - they specialize in Chinese translators.
The ones that have the touch screen pens are very useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars somewhat dissapointed
I am a non native speaker of English and when I came to the United States I got a lot of help from a Franklin Speaking Dictionary so I bought the Chinese-English version hoping it will do the same. First I liked the price. Similar gadgets go for a higher price and sometimes do not even have an English manual. The interface was also great then you can switch between Chinese and English. The disappointment came when I tried to use the "say" function. It didn't work. Hopefully my case is an isolated one. I think that if it had worked I would have liked this product. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent software, poor design.
This product is a mixed blessing. The software and the features it offers are outstanding: it has full comprehensive English/Spanish, Spanish/English translations including complete conjugation of verbs, numerous useful phrases, expressions and idioms, plus the ability to pronounce all words. These features make it an invaluable tool in learning Spanish or English.

However, it is mindboggling why the people at Franklin decided to make this electronic translator aerodynamic. It's not supposed to fly after all! Unfortunately, they have traded functionality for looks: the buttons are very small and hard to press which gets to be very annoying after a while. Most importantly, the screen is hard to read (you have to look at it at an angle to avoid seeing the reflection of yourself). Finally, the top line is generally hard to read which is very disturbing since it is usually the most important line.

I sincerely hope that the design flaws will be fixed in the next version - it would make a trully exceptional product.

2-0 out of 5 stars second year spanish student
I had great hopes for this machine. Immediately I noticed that the first line of the entry always seemed to be in a dark shadow and I had to try tipping the unit to get light into the inner screen to make it readable. It too often doesn't have the words --- even many very common ones in its database. The voice is extremely fuzzy when you try the audio pronunciation feature. It only has a few forms of many of the the words I am seeking. If this unit really has 250,000 words -- as they tell us---then they should create a new one with a couple of million

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than a paper dictionary
I like being able to find words quickly, in either English or Spanish, with this dictionary. It contains a large number of words, and it conjugates verbs. There have been quite a few times it has not had a word I requested. Its important weaknesses are that it translates only words and does not recognize phrases; also, the speaking voice is fuzzy. I also noticed that it mispronounced one Spanish word (pajaro). On the up side, mine has worked well for 3-4 years, and it does not require frequent battery changes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Translator
Yes, This is a good translator gave it has a gift to my girlfriend and she loves it and it really helped my spanish writing skills.Only downfall is battery removal & install. The Screen could be better.

4-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful for me
I am a physician and in the summer time I have some migrant patients come to work in our area, I always feel handicap to communicate with them and make them feel we care for them. So I brought some spanish medical conversation books but I can't pronounce it, so it was useless. As I found out about Franklin BES 1840 and brought it. Since then I use the BES 1840 to help me and I can communicate adequately for my patients to understand some simple phases, and they appreciate that I try to learn their language. I highly recommend Franklin BES 1840, it may be sound mechanical, but very adequate and easy to use. I do wish they can expand their vocabulary. ... Read more

Most of the Spanish we are familiar with here in the U.S. is Latin Spanish. Nowhere on the outside of the package does it specify that this product is Spain Spanish. 5-0 out of 5 stars What it offers
Hello. I'm writing this to share my opinion with you. This product is great if you already own a Franklin Bookman. This allows you to translate from Spanish to English, English to Spanish, and has fun games and learnables to use. This summer my Spanish class is going to Mexico and I'm bringing this with me. When I bought this at another store it was quite expensive, but here at amazon.com the price is perfect. If I were you I'd take advanage of this great deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Buy It?
What's so great about it. Well if you already have a Franklin Bookman electronic devise you can use this and other cards in the Bookman . This means you don't have to buy to different products. It saves you money and is much more convenient. This is also great for me since I have trouble in Spanish class and now my teacher wants us to translate really hard sentences. Another plus is it's elecronic so you don't have to spend 10 minutes looking up a word you don't even know in a foreign language. I"m real glad they made this product. I think it's great and it comes with some great features. ... Read more
