5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I've had mine for about two years now and I love it! I've never had any problems with it and have even moved houses and brought it with me. The remote is handy when cooking.

1-0 out of 5 stars it is junk!
We purchased this model and within 5 months the cd player stopped working. I contacted the store and was told to call Sony. The store representative basically told me good luck getting Sony to fix it. They were aware that customers with problems with Sony usually get a run around. He also said that these things are slapped together and you get what you get. I told him that we had only had it for 5 months and I had not used the CD player all that much. What you get is junk and I would not recommend this product to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Model defective and Sony service stinks
For the four months we've owned this cd player, we've loved it. Love that it's off the counter. Love the remote on the fridge. Love the sound and ease of use. Then, the cd player just stopped working. When we contacted Sony we were informed that our only option was to mail it to their repair center at our cost and have a refurbished model sent back. Shipping set us back about $25 (not including the cost of packing materials). It doesn't speak well for Sony that they wouldn't send a UPS label to cover the cost of shipping, particularly on a product that broke with only a few months of standard usage. We are very, very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I just got this unit and it is great. The installation was alot easier than I expected. All I had to do was use the sheet of paper that came with it, marked and drilled three holes, and screwed the screws in. Simple.

The sound is better than that of the Philips boombox that it replaced. And it doesn't take up any counter space and even has a remote that sticks on the fridge. I highly recommend this product to anybody that likes to have music while cooking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent design-features-quality-value balance!
I have been shopping for several months for an under-cabinet LCD TV to replace our 18-year-old 5" RCA tube-type TV in our kitchen, which has served us well but has developed annoying on/off button problems and now looks old, clunky out-of-date.

Our requirements for a replacement unit were as follows:
1. Small, sleek, unobtrusive, LCD design that would blend in under our white cabinets
2. CD player so my wife could enjoy her books-on-CD in the kitchen (DVD and radio would be a plus but not essential)
3. We wanted to be able to view both local channels as well as satellite channels without needing to also install a DirecTV decoder box (this would take additional space -defeating our compactness goal -- and require more complicated wiring, not to mention monthly charges).
4. Quality (and warranty) that would ensure it would last several years.
5. Price under $500.
6. Given the limited selection and the poor quality reviews on other models, I needed to be able to examine it in person before buying.

I looked at these options:

1. Audiovox VE-1020 (and its older/smaller siblings). It way too pricey at $600-700 and read too many 'poor' reviews on audio quality and overall durability.
2. RCA BLC524: Screen too small, and 'poor' quality reviews, plus could not find it in a retail store.
3. Motorola/Moxell Tech KA-A13: Sounded good, reliable manufacturer, but could only find its announcement as it is not yet available.
4. Standalone 13" LCD (Gateway, Aquous, Sharp) with a separate swivel mounting bracket. I eliminated this option early because it would be too large, too expensive (~$100 for the bracket alone!), and it most cases would not include a CD player.

I bought the Sony as soon as I found its availability was advertised at a local electronics retail store. Bought it with an inexpensive 5-year extended warranty.

It's been in place for 2 weeks and we *like* it - it is living up to expectations, despite a couple of design flaws -- the absence of which would have earned the unit *five* stars.

First the flaws-all minor:

1. Fit and connections. As an earlier reviewer on this site pointed out, its installation is a tight fit under our cabinets, leaving only about an inch clearance to plug in the coax and a/v connectors. But this was easily remedied by purchasing right-angle adapters (Radio Shack, $4 each) that can be screwed in after installation with the 1" clearance. These redirect the cable and RCA connectors downward, making attaching the cables post-installation easy. Sony would do well to include these right-angle adapters.

2. Installation instructions. The alternative is to connect all your cables *prior* to installing the unit - something the instructions did not point out. In fact, the instructions could be improved in various areas. For instance, while the unit comes with variable-depth spacers so that installation under cabinets with doors that overhang the cabinet bottom, if you have flush-mounted doors (as we do), you *don't* want to use the spacers at all. Well, the instructions don't suggest this option, leaving you to think that the spacers are required in all cases. For me, this meant re-installing without the spacers, a minor hassle.

3. No built-in TV antenna. Unlike our old RCA, this unit does not have a built-in extending-wand antenna. This makes it a *requirement* that you connect TV and/or A/V inputs to another signal source to receive *anything* on the TV. While many people may be planning to do this, it *does* raise the ante on hooking it up. Sony would have a more versatile product for less experienced people if they included an optional "single rabbit ear" antenna that could be plugged into the TV/cable connector.

Now the good features:

1. TV: Sharp, noise-free wide-format picture, with settable options for standard 3x4 picture size and two wide-format variations. Just the right size. When not in used, screen is easily folded into a cavity under the unit and latches mechanically (more securely than magnetically, which may also wear out).

2. Sound: Perfect for TV viewing and CD story listening, and quite decent for FM or CD music, both in volume and fidelity. Two 3" speakers main the sound forward and downward, and the bass extender works as advertised. As long as you don't expect home theatre quality sound from this unit, you should be quite satisfied.

3. CD Player: Quality feel of its slide-out tray. Plays commercial and my home-recorded MP3s flawlessly.

4. Remote: Small, intuitive, well-constructed. Its bottom magnet attaches to our refrigerator nicely.

5. AM/FM presets: 5 of each, easily set, with manual tuning buttons on the unit and the remote.

6. TV/Video switch: Easily switches from the antenna/cable input to the a/v inputs. This is important, as the way we wired the unit, it only takes my technology-challenged wife one button click to switch from local channels to satellite channels coming in from our home theatre system.

7. Clock: Intuitive and easily set.

8. Timer: Doubt we will use - or care about -- this feature.

Bottom line: We like it a lot, both how it looks and how it works. The Sony name (and their 1-year manufacturer's warranty) - coupled with the inexpensive 5-year extended warranty we bought - should give us several good years of service...until it is again technologically out-of-date and needs upgrading again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed when the machine would not fit! It was exactly the depth of the cabinet, which prevented us from being able to attach the cable to the back. Why in the world didn't the design take in to consideration the hookups could NOT be on the back against the wall? I would have just loved it, but Oh Well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Old-fashioned volume knob!
How many times have you cursed the almost ubiquitous little volume "up" and "down" arrows on most new electronics? They are hard to press and they take forever to adjust. Here's your chance to get a decent under-cabinet clock/radio with a large, simple, functional volume knob located conveniently on the side. That alone is reason to give this unit serious consideration. I actually purchased this for my garage to go under the cabinets above my workbench (I have the Salton "ICEbox" in the kitchen, but that's over 2 grand). Its only weak point is the speaker output is not quite powerful enough - at higher volumes, distortion becomes evident. However, at most normal listening volumes, it sounds fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Careful what you wish for.
I gave one of these to my wife six months ago, after being less than impressed by reviews of the equivalent GE product. Basically, I wanted something that would pull in her 3 public radio stations and offer me incentive to feed the cats. Trouble is, the darn thing requires installation--which took me 4-5 hours not counting the five months I simply thought about doing it.

The pluses: It seems very solid and durable, is a no-brainer to operate, and produces relatively high-frequency (if a bit hollow-sounding) fidelity.

Minuses: It's deeper than I'd bargained for. The only under-the-cabinet space that would accommodate it was in a corner. Curiously, Sony's instructions warn against installing it near florescent lighting. (What are you supposed to do--rewire your kitchen?) This may explain why radio reception, while decent, is hardly startling. Only by fiddling with the electrical cord (which does double duty as an antenna) can I get acceptable sound on most of the fringe (40-70 miles out) stations. If only manufacturers would scrap some of the automatic features and station memory banks in favor of more sensitive and selective tuners. And, true, the unit has a "mega-bass" switch with a single setting--but does anyone remember the days when radios came with a handy little knob called a "tone control"?

All in all, a well-made product offering solid performance and value. An excellent gift for the handyman in the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this radio!
This is a great item! No trouble with installation. Great sound from the radio and also the cd player. Very easy to use! The price just can't be beat. I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the ticket for me!
I was using a crummy boom box to listen to the radio while I was in the kitchen and hated the way it took up counter space, plus the reception was finicky. I looked at other models of under cabinet radios and the only other one that was comparable was the newest GE model. The older white models were clunky in design. The newer GE did not have as rich of a sound and it had a "busier" design that I thought would be a grunge magnet in the kitchen. I was concerned about the FM antenna in the cord, but it turned out to be an non-issue. Mounting was a breeze and the reception I get is the same as with our big receivers, even without the cord stretched out (I have it loosely looped on top of the unit). AM reception is the best in the house!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
CD Player started to skip in first few weeks of its use. It finally broke after 6 monts of use. The design of the unit isn't so bad , with the exception of volume control which in my opinion should be in place of timer control, but the quality of the equipment is very bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars not just for kitchen use!
I bought this product for use as a bedroom player. Other stereos seemed a bit too bulky to fit my minimalist tastes and I had a limited budget to work with. I must say that I am very pleased with the performance of this player. Even though I mounted it under a bookcase shelf, it still produces amazing sound [despite the fact that the speakers are underneath the player].

As with most Sony electronics, it plays CD-R & -RWs perfectly. The radio is also of very high quality -- the reception is excellent. For the first time in my life I can catch every radio station I listen to. In addition, the remote is small and has a magnetic back for ease of storage.

Installation is a breeze (just make sure you have a drill handy!) as Sony provides a stencil of sorts (holes puched where you'll need to drill) to facilitate mounting.

I highly recommend this product for anyone on a budget looking for an attractive player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super sound from a small package
Purchased unit and installed quickly. What a pleasure to listen to this great sounding unit. Fits perfectly under cabinet. Timer so easy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, BUT...
This is a very nice stereo, looks great, lots of features and easy to install IF... Your kitchen cabinets are standard. We thought ours were, but the lip (overhang) on the front is too long. The screws that came with the unit were too short(they sent 3in, we needed 4in). Home Depot didn't carry longer screws of that type. (three stores later)I had to go to a specialty Nut and Bolt Shop to find longer ones. Anyway, the only other thing I am not too thrilled about is that to get better reception you have to extend the plug all the way out. It is kind of finicky. We will have to find some way to extend the plug, hide it and get the good reception. Overall we are very happy with the unit and we get lots of compliments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money.
Too bad there's not a zero star option. I bought this primarily for a kitchen radio. The tuner and volume knobs are so smooth and so tiny you can barely turn them--certainly not with wet or sticky fingertips. The tuner is analog, not digital, so you're lucky to tune in a station at all; it's impossible to avoid interference. Nor is it an option to set it to mono to cut the background hiss. I suppose the CD player works and sounds fine, so I've put it in the laundry in case I ever get around to ironing. If not, taking it to the consignment shop will likely cost less than shipping it back for another $20.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
I received this radio and had to ship it back the same day. The CD player worked once and never worked again. The knobs are extremely small and hard to turn. The overall craftsmanship of this item is poor. I would suggest you try another unit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mine works Great, and I love it.
I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about, I have had great luck with this and all of the Memorex products that I have purchased. This item hangs down and is designed to do so, it is a under cabinet mount radio, they all hang down, some more than others....

1-0 out of 5 stars bulk-o-rama
Compared to other models (especially by Sony) this one is quite the clunker! It's very big and hangs down low. It seems very low tech. Once you get a quick look at it, you can tell that design is not a factor at all. Spenda little more and get something cool and sleek that you'll use for years to come.

1-0 out of 5 stars Memorex products are cool, but.....
The MC-3800 that I got had a weak front end (Receiver)and poor sound quality at lower volume levels. The equipment is designed well and functionality is great but fails to produce the sound quality of receivers that are a fraction of the cost. The CD player works great but there again, the lower volume sound levels sound distorted or deminished. ... Read more
