1-0 out of 5 stars Installation nightmare
I installed NAS with windows XP and it would not work.
After several e-mails and phone calls to their support desk in India they had me delete all my Norton programs (pc anywhere and Norton Antivirus) and run some patches and delete files and delete items in regedit.
Now I get a 3 different errors when I start my computer, I can't do microsoft windows updates and Antivirus and antispam do not work. The support is very slow to respond and don't seem to know what they are doing.
I will probably have to reformat my machine and start again

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money, time and energy; crazy-making
Worked fine initially. Then it deteriorated. Took forever to enter a posting into Norton Antispam (to designate it as spam). Then inexplicably my e-mail on Outlook Express6 got very buggy. Finally, I started getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruplicates of the same spam with minor variations, endlessly; and Norton Antispam began precedingthe sender information in every incoming e-mail, including my professional listserv e-mails, with "[Norton Antispam]" (as shown here, in brackets). This resulted in my needing to delete the "[Norton Antispam"] when I replied to an e-mail posting. At one point I noticed that my listserv postings (professional group communications) hadvery sharply diminished in number. Ultimately, I found that Norton Antispam had-- apparently for my convenience-- segregated these into theNorton Antispam folder. There I found some 2,000 e-mails, all with "[Norton Antispam"] preceding the senders' addresses. Many of these were my professional listserv messages; others were the usual obnoxious scams and spams for which one purchasesantispam software; however, when I tried to click on the button that tells Norton Antispam that "this is spam," I found it to be greyed out, and NONE OF THE MESSAGES COULD NOWBE DESIGNATED AS SPAM, apparently because they now had been funneled to me THROUGH Norton Antispam, like a gift. (I was, however, given the option to click on the button to indicate that "this is NOT spam.")

The wrestling with bugs in my system went on for hours and days, beginning with my internet service provider, going to Microsoft (where, for a fee, they helped somewhat), and continuing with Norton. Norton's customer support was execrable. On the final day of my efforts to get help, at one point I was on the phone for more than an hour, on hold. Support staff seemed befuddled, clueless, and ready to repeat what another support person had done that was useless, despite my protests. I was prepared to pay the nearly $30 they asked for their "help," but balked when the last technician was ready to charge me an additional nearly $70 because, supposedly, a virus had gotten into my e-mail. I wasn't convinced; very recently Norton Antivirus had scanned my computer and found no viruses. I had to ask to speak to a supervisor because she refused to take "no" for an answer to this billing. Norton's other products have so far worked well for me, incidentally.

Finally, I disabled the Norton Antispam and deleted all messages with the "[Norton Antispam]" imprimatur. This has apparently solved problems for now, and I just "block sender" on the spam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow and Not Very Effective
It takes far too long for the program to block an email that you just received. It is not that accurate. I would not use it if if was free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable That They Even Ship It
I can't even believe Symantec would ship this in the condition it is in. Further, if it is so important to them to have some kind of antispam software in their suite, I can't believe they haven't put lots of resources into fixing it via their live update feature.

Summary of the problems:
It doesn't work... It's not catching spam.

When you select a spam e-mail that it missed and tell it "this is spam" to train it, it is horribly slow... It just took an hour to process the 300 spams I received over the weekend.. This is on a 2.2 GHz machine, and task manager shows that CPU is the bottleneck... 100% CPU utilization for about an hour.

It is not correctly integrated with Outlook. Whenever it processes a message, it triggers Outlook to think it is a virus accessing your address list. The best you can do is to tell Outlook to let it have access for 10 minutes at a time. In other words, if you get more than about 30 spam messages, you actually have to wait around and do a three step process every 10 minutes to get it to keep processing!
NOTE: SpamBully and other products do not do this, so this is NOT an Outlook problem. It is a problem with the way that Norton Antispam talks to Outlook.

In short, a horribly flawed product that should not be shipping until these issues are fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT Buy This Crappy Software!!
There is a huge bug in this software and it will not work with Outlook. The Anti-Spam toolbar causes Outlook to shut down and an error message pops up.This happens every time you start Outlook for the first time of the day with a new user. The folks at Symantec have known about the bug for well over a year but refuse to fix it.They blame Outlook, but they are the ones who designed this software to (not) work with Outlook. This company obviously does not care about its customers and their problems.Next time I will buy McAfee or something and stay far away from this company. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy and tech support is virtually non-existent.
Buggy buggy buggy! On one computer, I can only get NPF to load on 1/3 of all boots (warm or cold). On my other computer, the central (yet separate) updating program -- Symantec LiveUpdate -- automatically CHANGES its connectivity options ITSELF nearly every day, which causes the "LiveUpdate settings" to become "corrupt," making updating either NPF or NAV impossible unless. . . .

One goes through a cumbersome process of scanning the entire hard drive(s) for LiveUpdate's configuration settings, removes them manually, goes to the control panel to reconfigure NEW settings, and then reboots. This works (temporarily) to fix the problem, but it takes about 10 minutes. Do that 10-12 times per week, and you can imagine the frustration factor.

Periodically, this "quick" fix fails, and I have to go through a bizarrely convoluted "uninstall" process for Symantec LiveUpdate. This LENGTHY process is outlined in a "repair" document that, when the screen type is set to "smallest," requires 6 (SIX) pages of paper to describe and about 45 minutes to actually execute.

When that "repair" no longer works, Symantec tech "support" suggests uninstalling and reinstalling everything (that's their solution to nearly every problem -- they seem to have next to zero troubleshooting expertise or, perhaps, zero WILL to help), a process that can take as long as an hour and a half, depending on your CPU clock speed.

I've mentioned the near-uselessness of their email "tech" support. Frankly, I see no "tech" in their "support." Invariably, one is directed to one of a gazillion lengthy online documents that spells out a time-consuming process to keep the customer running in circles, only to find, ultimately, that there is NO way to fix the problem other than UNINSTALLING everything (remember, there are three components here -- NPF, NAV, and LiveUpdate) and then reinstalling ALL THREE. A 1.5 hour process, at least, as I noted above.

I'm completely fed up with Symantec, especially with their repeated "apologies for any inconvenience. . . ." What? "Any" inconvenience? How about the very REAL and repeatedly tangible wastes of time caused not only by buggy software but by their inability and/or unwillingness to actually troubleshoot an issue or fix the bugs in their software rather than simply playing their default "uninstall and reinstall" card. If they truly were sorry, they'd fix the software rather than directing the customer to "keep. . . running" (hat tip to Ralph Ellison).

I'm no programmer, but even I could give that "techincal support advice" (I use the terms loosely). I have no alternative software solutions to suggest, but I strongly warn users to avoid this software like the plague that it is.

Ironically, the anti-virus software works like a charm (it has intercepted dozens of viral emails), and the firewall is impressive in its capabilities and has been excellent. But the inability to keep the products updated because of unauthorized software auto-reconfigurations and subsequent file corruptions thereby, added to the dozens of hours needed to keep that update component functioning properly have made this software and Symantec's lack of useful tech support infuriating.

Update to Symantec 2005?
Not while I'm alive. . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great if you keep it updated...
We use this at work and it is by far the best antivirus program out there. At home, I use the Macintosh version. The best I can say is that there are so many virii on the Window's platform you'd be silly not to have something like this installed. If you're tired of virii, worms, trojans, spyware, etc..., there is another solution. Get a Mac. The piece of mind you get knowing that the operating system is nearly impossible to infect or crack outweighs the tiny learning curve in switching to a different operating system. How many virii have I gotten at my Mac at home in the last 6 months? Zero. How many at work? At least one a week via email. Even our CIO (Information officer) is putting in a proposal as I write this to migrate the entire server and desktop system to the Mac OS X platform, and we're a fortune 500 company. The money saved alone in downtime from systems getting infected (if you can't work, you can't produce!), more than pays for the minor expense of making the switch. NAV is good. But unless you keep your virus definitions up to date, you're asking for a heap of trouble. And how many users really take the time to update their definitions even when the program prompts them to do so? I can count them on one hand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete software bundle anywhere!!
McAfee bundled all the necessary software you need for secure Internet surfing in just one CD, saving you a lot of time in installation. The software itself is very stable (never encountered any hang-up in memory), and doesn't hog your PC's resources. It loads quickly on startup which is the fastest that I've seen so far. The updater has also been integrated efficiently that it doesn't cause any disruptions in your activities. Once you got it installed, it's the sweetest low-maintenance software you'll ever have. It's a total far cry from the Norton Suite that I had not long ago.
My Norton Suite of a year constantly hanged up, consumed a lot of my PC resources that made my PC slow, and broke down a lot of times whenever a virus get through my system (and it said my PC was protected at all times with the Auto-Protect feature!). And just because of that I needed to re-install the program all over again (which takes by itself a lot of time and sweat) and continually screwed my system with every re-installation. And their customer support takes 2 weeks per reply for free service, and charges you with a fee (in american dollars) if you want immediate service. My PC and myself is now scarred by the ruthless nightmares this suite has given me.
So as a review, I could say that McAfee is the best I had after Norton. This suite itself contains both necessary firewall and antivirus protection your PC needs, and includes much more features like privacy service (which is like a net nanny software) and anti-spam. Just by switching to McAfee Internet Suite has saved me time and money (since I don't have to buy individual softwares that this bundle has). If you're skeptical like I was in the beginning, I recommend that you try the trial software which is offered in their website for 30 days. And I assure you that after you had trial, you'll go for the whole year subscription. That's how good this software bundle is.
I've just read the previous comment of this software about the password thing and I just don't get what the reviewer was saying, because I haven't experience it myself. So out of five stars, i might even give it a six!

1-0 out of 5 stars "D ON O TB U Y !!!D ON O TB U Y !!!"
After installing this peace of software It quickly forgets its own password. Which is not a problem You just need to uninstall it which of course you need the password for. The number the tech manual gives you is a recording that directs you back to McAfee's web site which of course you need the password to access the internet. I had one lady over the phone offer to e-mail me my solution which of course you need your password to get your e-mail. I spent (I kidd you not TWO AND HALF HOURS! [count them TWO AND HALF HOURS!] on the phone with EIGHT different phone numbers!) Which are not toll free six of those numbers where recordings directing you back to the web site or other numbers you already have. I had one lady who was more then kind to direct me to any one of those numbers I already had and had called. The other was willing to send the e-mail Please Please avoid this nightmare
