4-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for a 540-series Jornada
I've never used the serial cradle, because I got this USB cradle when I bought my Jornada, so I can't compare the two, but I can say that this is definitely worth the money, whether you purchase it as part of a package or separately. USB connectivity is a must these days, especially if you intend to sync your Jornada with one or more PCs. That's how I use mine, and I find that the USB cradle allows me to quickly sync my Outlook information and other files with my PC, in addition to charging it when it is in the cradle. The weighted base helps keep the cradle in place and allows me to keep it under my desk on top of my tower PC when it's charging.

However, as with most products, the USB cradle is not perfect. I share the concerns of other reviewers about the fact that the screen stays on while it's charging (wonder if setting the power-off setting to a lower number would help; I've not tested that before). Also, I would have preferred a cradle that would help you align your Jornada with the connectors - this is more like a cell phone cradle because you slide your Jornada into it. HP does advise that you use both hands to do this. I think it would have been better to make the connector work more like a game controller or other peripheral, with the connectors housed within the cradle instead of having one side of them visible, so you could plug the Jornada into the cradle securely.

One thing to keep in mind - occasionally, my PC has had trouble locating my Jornada, making it difficult to sync my items. Every time this has happened, all I had to do was reboot the Jornada and the PC recognized it on the next synchronization attempt. Make sure you know how to do a soft reset on your Jornada and you should be fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pays for itself
A USB cradle or cable is a must have for your Jornada. Its SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the serial cable the 540 comes with. Especially if you transfer a lot of MP3s or web pages, this cradle will pay for itself with the time you save rather quickly.

The only downside is that it doesn't come with a power cable. You either have to use the one your 540 came with and plug it into the cradle or buy another one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two is better than one!
I bought a second USB cradle (one comes with the 545) so that I could use it at work. It's much better than the serial cable (faster and you don't use up a serial port). It integrates with the AC adapter so that you can keep the PocketPC charged while it's on the stand. The AC Adapter is sold separately, so be sure to buy one of these too if you don't have one already.

HP recommends to use the USB cradle with only Win98 or W2K. Get the serial version if you are running Win95.

The following comments have nothing to do with the cradle per se, but do affect how you use it...

The only drawback that I've seen is that the screen will stay on while the unit is in the cradle and connected to your PC (it won't power off automatically). I'm afraid that the screen will burn in if left on for several hours while it is in the cradle. You can either turn it off (this disconnecting from the PC) or blank the screen by pushing the light/button on the top of the PocketPC. I prefer to blank the screen so that it will stay connected to my PC and continue to sync information automatically as I make changes to Outlook.

Because I'm synching at work, I now have three identical copies of my contact information because the PocketPC carries additions and changes back and forth as I synch at home and at work. This is really nice as I totally rely on Outlook to keep track of people. If you want to, you can set filters so that "business" contacts won't replicate to your home PC and vice versa but both will exist on the PocketPC. This is also nice, but a pain to maintain the categories for each contact entry.

4-0 out of 5 stars USB . . . . but still a bit slow
I recently bought the HP Jornada 545, and use the USB cradle to synchronize all of my information and to transfer files. It's usually pretty fast, and I love the fact that it synchronizes everything automatically. But, while transfering mp3s and other larger files, it seemed to be a little slow. All in all, however, its a good device that has many positive points. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not available, but not a necessity
A lot of the posts about the IPaq lament the inoperability of the standard USB connector with NT. Rather than let what's an otherwise outstanding product get undeserved trashing I thought I'd explain a few things.

Windows 2000 DOES support USB, I use it with my laptop and Ipaq every day. Works great.

If you have to use NT4 on a laptop, you don't get USB, but you DO have support for infrared data transfer. You don't need to buy anything additional, and most laptops have it built in. I sync this way while traveling, works great and nothing else to carry.

For desktops and NT, you COULD buy a serial port connected infrared transmitter/reciever and accomplish the same thing, but most wouldn't want to. Preferring to wait for the serial cradle.

So it's not a total loss, but it is regretable that Compaq can't keep up with demand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Serial Cradle
I used this product for 13 days and returned it to Staples before their usual 14 day return policy expired. This is a great product, however, since I have a Windows NT machine, it is useless. (Windows NT can't use USB and I could not find a serial cradle anywhere.) I also wasn't thrilled with the size of the IPAQ. It is twice as thick as the Palm V. Way too big to put comfortably in my jeans pocket. Furthermore, it needs a cover to protect the screen. The Palm V leather case is the best example of how Compaq should design their unit/case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Serial Cradle Woes
While it is a bummer that Compaq does not have any serial cradles available yet for NT4.0 users who don't have USB support, I bought a serial cable and it works just fine. I had no trouble getting it to synchronize with my workstation running Windows NT, although it's slower than USB, I guess. You can get the cable right here from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars iPAQ NT4.0 workaround
I have iPAQ and Windows NT 4 at work and the workaround is to email to my home Windows 98 machine (that supports the iPAQ USB connection) items I wish to download - It works fantastic until I get my hands on a serial connection. I downloaded all my contact information directly via infrared from old Casio Windows CE device - if you have Palm (or PocketPC) get PEACEMAKER software to communication with CE (or Palm) devices.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless is right!
The iPaq's been out since June and I happened to be one of the first on hand when CompUsa had it on the shelf so I eagerly snatched it up. I can use the USB at home but I also needed the serial cradles for NT at work. Yet here it is October and the serial port still isn't available! Three months and all I've got is a $500 digital grocery list. And what's with CE ver 3? No close button on the applications! I don't even use it now, what a waste of money. Should've been smart and returned it within 14 days. I still drool over the display of accessories for every other hand held out there... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, they never run out of ink!
And they fit in the slot for my Jornada 548. Of course, I stopped losing styli the day I got this 3 pack, so they just sit in my desk & car, waiting for their turn.

4-0 out of 5 stars HP Jornada 540 Series Stylus Pens
Well, I bought this recently simply because I got sick of having to retrieve the stylus (which came with the unit) from the hood, whenever I was syncing or charging the unit in the cradle. So, I bought the set of THREE stylus pens. Granted, it's very helpful to have another ONE pen. Yet, for some reason they are sold in threes, for 12.99 a set. The other two are sitting in a drawer doing nothing (and probably will be doing nothing for another 10 years). Other than that gripe, the extra stylus pen is very helpful!

3-0 out of 5 stars room for improvement
Yes these styluses (styli?) are perfectly function and more importantly they fit in the HP Jornada cover; however a company that made brightly colors ones would win my dollars. I often write in places that are not well-lit (it's impossible to see the screen in sunlight), but it I drop my stylus in a restaurant or bar or on a train it is hard spot and find. I wish someone would make a bright red, orange or green stylus. Or better yet, how about glow in the dark?

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking!
Man, these have got to be the coolest stylus pens on the planet. I've got these and boy oh boy, they're great! You'd be overwhelmingly surprised by the functionality of these little wonders - a must have for anyone (PocketPC owner or not)! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Socket PocketPak for Samsung is a mobile e-mail kit that allows you use your handheld computer with your mobile phone for wireless e-mail and Internet access. This kit includes Socket's digital phone card, which connects a Pocket PC to a Samsung CDMA cell phone and allows the phone to function as a wireless modem.

The PocketPak comes with software for America Online and Microsoft Network; this allows you to connect wirelessly to the Internet and run e-mail in one easy step, eliminating the hassle of running two separate programs. The PocketPak also wirelessly enables Microsoft Pocket Inbox, which is included on Windows-powered Pocket PCs.

Socket's digital phone card is capable of transmitting and receiving data at up to 1 megabit per second (Mbps). The limitation in transfer speed is dependent on the wireless network--most CDMA networks currently operate at 14.4 Kbps, while most GSM networks currently operate at 9.6 Kbps. As the networks increase their data throughput the digital phone card is capable of going as fast as the networks for now and the foreseeable future.

Check with your service provider to make sure your cell phone is data capable and that data services are available in your area or are turned on for your account. Some carriers require that you turn on data services at an additional cost.

Other versions of the PocketPak are available for Motorola, Qualcomm, and Sprint PCS phones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have a mobile phone? Have a PDA? You need this.
I love this accessory. Plug one end into your PDA (I have an HP Jornada 548 PocketPC...see my review on it), and the other end into your mobile phone (I use a Samsung SCH3500). Bring up your connection on your PDA, and presto...you're connected. Chances are, you can use your current dial-up Internet provider. I use either AOL or Verizon for my mobile connections. This allows you to connect to the Internet anytime, anywhere.

The downside is that the highest connection speed you are likely to obtain is 14kbps. This is a limitation of most mobile phone web services, NOT a limitation of the Mobile Email PocketPak. The good news is that if your wireless web provider gets faster, so will you.

Note that you must have wireless web service via your mobile phone company for this to work. There may be an additional monthly fee for this, if you don't already have it.

Your PDA must have a type I compact flash slot for this accessory. If you have an iPaq, that means you need to carry your sled thingy around with you. One of the things I love about the Jornada is the convenient, built-in type I CF slot. But that's another review. ;)

Even considering the speed deficiency, this is still a great feature to have on the go. Email and Instant Messaging work perfectly well at 14kbps. Surfing the Internet, on the other hand, will be very slow, but still workable if you're not in a big hurry.

I carry my whole PDA setup in my purse (and it's not a big purse), including my Jornada, folding keyboard, mobile phone, and Mobile Email PocketPak. Within moments, I can unfold the keyboard, slip my Jornada into the cradle, attach the PocketPak cable, and be on the Internet...all while sitting at my favorite restaurant, or at the airport, or while riding in the car. It's like carrying the whole world in my purse.

I love it. You will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient for medium duty digital camera
Great tool for taking quick pics as long as you don't need high res or macro focusing capabilities. takes pretty decent pictures if lighting is good, and it obviously beats having no picture if you're not one to carry a camera around. You can't beat always having it with you, which is where your Jornada is if you depend on the PDA the way I do!...check out hp.com or best buy for much better price

4-0 out of 5 stars a great little gadget
ok....with the hp jornada 525....it kinda [wasn't good], but it was the pda not the camera...the 525 is a great little pda but it doesn't have the resolution to use the camera well! when i got my jornada 568 this little gadget takes pretty good pictures, much lighter and clearer than on the 525!really glad i held onto it cause this tiny little accesssory is easy to carry and i can take pictures anytime i want...it has lots of setting for night, action, zoom ect....being a nurse at a nursing home there are alot of wonderful moments when i say why don't i have a camera,,,now i do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Pictures and a Great Space-Saver
This is not a professional-grade digital camera with lots of bells and whistles and a manual which requires a masters degree in photography to read. This is a convenient, easy to use, and compact camera for people like me who occassionally like to take pictures. Best of all, if you always have your Jornada with you anyway...now you can have a digital camera, too, without making extra space in your purse or pocket.

This is one of my favorite accessories for my Jornada. As mentioned before, there is no flash. Pictures taken in low-light will therefore be grainy and generally low-quality. But in good lighting, especially in daylight, this camera takes beautiful pictures. The maximum resolution is 640x480, and I've found that to be more than adequate for casual photography. At that resolution, with the highest quality settings, and in daylight...this camera will take pictures rivaling top standalone digital cameras. The pictures are extremely web-friendly and look great on a web page.

The software included with the camera is very good. You can leave the settings on "auto" in most cases and get great results. If you experiment (or know what you're doing), you can use the manual settings to achieve better results in low-light conditions and other special circumstances (such as capturing fast motion). The zoom feature, as with most digital cameras, achieves only marginal results. It's nice to have, regardless.

There are a lot of other features in the software that offer good flexibility and power. All the basic functions are there--shutter speed, exposure, gain, etc.

I suggest the first thing you do is pump up the image quality and size of your pictures to maximum. Each picture will take more free memory on your device, but the quality is worth it. You can always transfer your images to a storage card between photo-ops.

The camera, itself, is very small. It's a painless addition to carry, and is well-protected in the included case. I love the fact that you can use it without opening the cover on your Jornada, if you choose to. We all know how difficult the Jornada screen is to see in the sunlight. The built-in viewfinder and shutter button let you operate your Jornada just like a regular camera. Simply turn it on and it's ready to point and shoot.

I have taken hundreds of pictures with my Jornada and have been very happy, sometimes even amazed, with the results. I've received "oohs" and "ahhhs" from people who use professional grade digital cameras costing hundreds more. But for me it's the genuine portability that really makes it worth the price.

I use my Jornada for just about everything. It is my address book, calendar, planner, MP3 player, photo album, alarm clock, movie player, game machine, notebook, organizer, spreadsheet, checkbook, oven timer, calculator, Internet portal, safe, alarm clock...well, I could go on but you get the idea. And with this accessory, it is my digital camera, too.

I appreciate the feature of being able to record a voice memo along with a picture. I've used this feature to do comparison shopping in stores. I'd find a product I was interested in, take a snapshop and record where I found it and how much it cost. There are so many ways to use it!

Sure, a standalone digital camera might take better pictures. Might. But thanks to my Jornada and accessories like this one...I'm able to carry a very small purse and still carry more devices than most people could fit in a duffel bag. A big one.

- Heather

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for those with low expectations...
I purchased one locally, and returned it the same day. The picture quality is worse than any cheap camera I have seen.

The pictures seem to be captured in 256 colors regardless of whether or not you choose the "best" picture quality.

For those of you who've used a photo retouching program, the quality of the picture is like taking a high color picture and running it a Median Cut color reduction with a maximum of 64 colors.

For the benefit of those who are not "technical" the pictures were not even decent in quality, the colors were way off and certain areass were either contoured or grainy.

I thought that my Jornada 525 wasn't showing the picture properly because of its limitations, but when I copied the picture to my desktop the quality was still bad. My desktop runs at 800x600 with true color, so if it's not good here it's not good anywhere.

It's quite frustrating that manufacturers, especially those of HP's caliber, release an inferior product. It's even more frustrating that these inferior products cost so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet little addition
a must have if you are a jornada owner. If you travel or are just driving around town it is so cool to take photos with this camera. Quality is good for what it is meant for . Am very happy with it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nope, does not work with E-115
Greetings! Unfortunately I have to disagree with Neil - the FZ-500P does NOT work with the E-115. I just received it and the manual clearly states that it does only support models up to the E-105. Casio's customer support center confirms that. But to all the pre-E-115 owners: This device is sooo cool :) Just buy holding it in my hands I can tell that I would LOVE it (if it would work with my Cassiopeia). That's why I give it 3 stars (kinda to stay neutral).

Other than that: Don't Panic! (42)

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with the E-115
I got the Freedio printer after seeing it listed in the accessories catalog of my new E-115. After installing all the software, I couldn't get it to work and contacted Casio support. They informed me that it doesn't work with Pocket PC devices, because there is no task bar to activate the print routing from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would you like your receipt
When I got my E-115, I bought the portable handheld printer at the same time. It works wonders. With small companies you can print out receipt. You can make business cards on the go. Hand someone a really great looking note which the will never lose. Really it work with any windows CE PDA that has a IrDA infrared port. With 64 different shades of grey and 400 dpi this isn't one of those black and grey printers. The one problem I had was power, it chew up batteries, like a cat and mouse, it's best to buy those rechargeable batteries right away. Just think, if you ever run out of paper the Freedio stores the print command in it's memory and prints it later when you have enough paper. It makes a great partnership with the FZ-700S scanner, once a document is scanned it send it via the IrDA port and prints the document. This is a great buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have Accessory!
After 2 weeks using my Jornada 568 with the pocket keyboard, I can honestly say it is one of the best accessories I have ever purchased for any handheld. As a former owner of several Palm and Handspring units, I tried nearly all of the available keyboards -- the Palm/Targus stowaway keyboards, the GoType models, and even the Seiko Thumboard for Palm 505. My favorite was always the Palm foldaway -- it had a tiny form factor for easy storage, but opened up to a near full size keyboard, with excellent tactile response to the keys. It also worked without a hitch, everytime! The only problem with it was that you needed a flat surface to place it on in order to use it -- you could not set it on your lap.

With this pocket keybaord, HP has really come through with a great product. After a quick install of the driver, I connected the PK to my 568, launched the PK software to configure the device, and was typing away -- all in a matter of minutes. The keyboard works for all applications that take text entry, and I've so far had no problems whatsoever. The keys are spaced just far apart enough for me to type relatively quickly, and with few errors. The keys have a nice feel to them to, with a slight tactile response that signals you've properly pressed and released each key. I'm 6 feet tall with fairly large hands -- if I can type on this with ease, most folks will likely have no problem.

I also like the way the keyboard comes with its own protective cover for the unit -- it slips on over the Jornada in place of the cover the unit comes with, and only adds about a quarter to half an inch to the length of the unit. It's still slim and short enough to carry in my shirt pocket.

Finally, the unit is just darned attractive -- the Jornada was already a good-looking Pocket PC, but the keyboard gives it a whole new and compelling look -- if you see one, you'll really want to try it out!

On the down side -- for one, you need to remove the keyboard in order to charge or sync. It's a minor annoyance, but if you only sync once a day or so, like me, you can leave the keyboard on most of the time.

My only other minor gripe is that the keyboard covers up the hot keys on the Jornada, and I would have liked the keyboard to have included its own hot keys for just this reason. I've yet to figure out whether I can program the thing to open apps based on keyboard shortcuts, which would greatly enhance my PK usage. The keyboard does, however, include power on and off buttons, and a slider control on the side that allows you to lock the Jornada to keep it from turning on accidentally. That's just more smart engineering, which seems to have been behind this product from the beginning.

I'm fairly new to the Pocket PC world, having spent all my prior PDA time with Palm units. I still like Palms, but my Jornada 568, with the always on, ultra-portable Pocket Keyboard, has become my new favorite PDA. I take it everywhere, and highly recommend both the Jornada and the Pocket Keyboard.

3-0 out of 5 stars great except for one important thing
If you drop it, the cover and the hinges could come off. Good luck finding the hinges again! Now when I use my keyboard with my jornada, i have to do without a cover becasue those flimsy little hinges are long gone. And I overpaid for mine because I bought it ... at my local Brandsmart. Should have come to [Amazon.com], but it was an impulse buy. The keyboard also seems to add a lot a heft to the pocket pc, even though it doesn't feel that heavy on it own. Other than that, it's great. It beats the hunt and peck method you would otherwise have to use! And it lights up so you can use it in the dark.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, But...
The HP Jornada "thumbboard" has a nice feel, quite comfortable for long typing. The accompanying software driver is stable, and installation is simple.

Unfortunately, the method used to attach to the Jornada is ungainly - remove the lid, then shove the little pins on the keyboard face into the old hinge slots. To make matters worse (much worse), the keyboard blocks the sync/power cable connections, so you have to at least partially remove it in order to put it on its cradle to sync or recharge. I'd expected better from HP.

The following link is for an application that was mentioned on a discussion board. The following features were copied from that web page. I hope this helps!

... [URL]...HPHotKey makes your new HP 560 clip-on thumb keyboard approximately one hundred times more useful.
- Firstly, the application makes sure the HP keyboard driver is launched and hidden in the background after a warm reset.
- Secondly, you now get twenty-two special hotkeys for launching your Pocket PC applications and performing useful tasks. Once you've used this feature, you'll never do without.
- Simply press and release the SHIFT/CAPS key, and quickly tap one of the letter keys to launch four user-defined and twelve pre-programmed applications such as Address Book and Calculator.
- You can also stop the current task, return to the Today screen or open the Start menu - all without using the stylus. Version 1.1 fixes some bugs, and adds copy and paste for many applications, as well as cursor up and down keys.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Poor Implementation
I love my 568 and also purchased the pocket keyboard. I give only two stars because the keyboard hides the power and USB connectors. If you install the keyboard you have to run off of battery power and must remove the keyboard to use synchronize or recharge.

The manual is bad. You must remove the original cover of the Jornada to install the keyboard. The manual does not tell you how to do this. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hopeless IR Keyboard
What a piece of crap. This item is priced ~50% less than competitors - now I know why. The item simply would not communicate with my iPaq 4355. I tried every angle possible to get the keyboard to communicate with the PDA. Don't waste your money on this item.

4-0 out of 5 stars Setup in a minute...if you know this trick
I overall like it. I took some time to figure out a way to
set it up quickly. Here is the trick. Put your PDA on the
stand, and set the mirror right(don't worry about being too
accurate on the angle, it's ok). Open an edit software on
your PDA. Use one hand to hold the keyboard up very close
to the mirror. Use another hand to type any key, you should
lock the signal right away. Keep typing while slowly putting
the keyboard down. If you lost signal, move keyboard up to
relock the signal. I bet you'll get it in 3 tries. I had
worried about the button battery also, but I found out it's
only about 2 bucks, search it on yahoo or bizrate.com. With
this trick, and think about the price, I really can complain
too much...

3-0 out of 5 stars Definite Room for Improvement
This keyboard, when folded and in its case, is slightly smaller a woman's hand (aka my hand). Still, alot of its bulk does not seem necessary. There is a thick silver plastic attatched shell around the actual keyboard that makes it harder to depress the space key and adds to the size greatly. The keyboard itself, however, is well made and not unattractive. Unfortunately, it uses button batteries instead of the AAA employed by the Micro Innovations wireless keyboard model.

The stand that comes with the keyboard for your PDA looks like something from a dollar store. It is at once the flimsiest, cheapest, most pathetic piece of 'equipment' I have ever seen. The stand folds up, in a complicated puzzle-like way, into a single thick flat black box the size of two credit cards. Figuring out how to set it up the first time was an exercise in patience...I was mainly worried about snapping the thin joints attatched to the piece of reflective plastic that serves as a mirror.

The wirelessness of this device is accomplished through communication through IRA transmission. Unfortunately, it takes FOREVER to find the right location for the keyboard so that you can type. I spent ten whole minutes the first time experimentally hitting keys and adjusting the mirror so that the IRA port on my PDA could 'communicate' with the one on the keyboard. It is not easy to set up, I wouldn't suggest this device if you needed to get it out in a hurry...like to take notes for class or something. The fastest way to connect is to type with the PDA upside down with its port pointing directly to the keyboard's port.

Another major problem with the keyboard is the fact that it does not snap into place. Unless it is on a solid surface, the two sides of the keyboard are apt to slide apart and bend in the middle, making it impossible to type with it on the go.

The keyboard comes with a badly made and rather large ugly synthetic leather case with a pocket for the keyboard and one for the stand. ... Read more
