4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised
I needed to watch my kids at home from the internet and wanted to be able to pan & tilt. I first bought 3 cameras from X10 for [money amount]. Bad quality picture, couldn't penetrate corporate firewalls and too dificult to adjust. After 20 days of experimenting & support calls I gave up and bought this. Got it up and running in 3 hrs., no support calls required, penetrates firewalls and really good quality video. Drawbacks - the Pan and tilt is much lesser than X10. Works on a/c only. Big plus - 802.11b rocks on my wireless network!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Are you a little worried about dinner guests opening your medicine cabinet? Do you have a yard that attracts trespassers, despite the imposing-looking gate that protects it? If so, consider Design Tech's Motion Alert, which alerts users whenever a monitored object is moved for any reason. Whether your concern is home security, protecting your children from dangerous household items (such as cleaning supplies), or simply frustrating would-be snoopers, the Motion Alert monitors doors, gates, cabinets, furniture, equipment, or any other object you deem worthy of supervision. Mounted horizontally, the transmitter activates with even the slightest movement; mounted vertically, the transmitter requires a tilt of 20 degrees or more to activate. Once it detects movement, the receiver sounds either a continuous alarm or a door chime sound until reset. Users can program up to 16 additional sensors to monitor several objects at once; each sensor is miniature and weatherproof and has a 500-foot range. In addition, each sensor can be set to either low or high sensitivity. Simply secure sensors to objects with the double-sided foam tape or screws, plug the receiver into a wall outlet, and monitor away. ... Read more

Features

  • Receiver chimes and flashes when the monitored object is moved
  • Great for pool gates, tool sheds, or anything you want to monitor inside or out
  • Waterproof sensor can be placed up to 500 feet between sensor and receiver, inside or out
  • Siren available as an accessory

Amazon.com Product Description

Just because those who deliver the mail don't let rain or sleet stop them from their appointed rounds doesn't mean you have to trudge out in bad weather several times a day to see if the mail has arrived. Ideal for those with mailboxes at the end of long driveways, Design Tech's wireless Mail Alert notifies homeowners or renters when their mailboxes are full. Once the mail person opens your mailbox door, a receiver inside your home chimes once every five minutes for two hours and a light constantly flashes until you reset the unit. The unit's 300-foot range should cover most driveways, and you can adjust the sensitivity of the receiver--an especially valuable feature if your mailbox is frequently rattled. Make sure your trips to the mailbox are infrequent during cold and wet winter days by welcoming the Mail Alert into your household. ... Read more

Features

  • Mail Alert is designed for mailboxes using pull down doors
  • Indoor receiver chimes and flashes to alert you that the mail has arrived
  • Up to 300 foot of range between mailbox sensor and receiver
  • Don't get cold or soaked only to find the mail has not yet arrived
  • Easy installation - just mount the sensor on the mail box door and plug the receiver into any electrical outlet inside your home

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked as expected
Having read another review of this product, I had some trepidation before ordering. I called the manufacturer's Technical Department. and was encouraged by what I heard. I decided to order, largely because of Amazon's liberal return policy. Now that I have it, I find the product to work admirably. Each time the postal deliverer opens my mailbox, the system alerts me. There have been no false alarms. I would recommend this product to anyone who is tired of repeated trips to the mailbox.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mail Alert didn't alert!
I installed the Mail Alert receiever inside my house behind a window with clear view of the mail box. The glass and window screen were the only thing between the transmitter and receiver. Distance about 175 ft. Installed transmitter as specified on mail box. The receiver would light up and beep once about 1 out of 5 times I opened the mail box door. Otherwise nothing happened. I checked the battery with a digital VOM and voltage was 3" VDC which indicated a new battery. I returned the Mail Alert device as it would not work consistantly. I did receive superior service from Amazon with full refund including postage both ways. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Joke!!
We bought one of these for ourselves and We thought it was so wonderful we purchased one exactly like it for my mother to give her for a mothers day gift.About a month after we started using ours it totally went out!!(We had already ordered the one for my mom but had not received it yet)On ours Sometimes the doorbell would ring but no picture was on the screen. Very shortly after that got the one shipped that we had ordered for my mom but that one would not work at all !!!We are very disappointed with these. We have spent approx.$500.total for these two systems and they are both garbage products. We later bought a Commax system and it is working great!!We would certainly advise anyone considering a Samsung brand to not waste their money on these. They are certainly a joke!!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT deal for the price!
My situation is: I own a 3 level home with a gate on the ground level....which means you have to travel 3 flights of stairs to let anyone in or out of my home. I solved this problem by purchasing this unit and installing an electric door strike on the gate.

I also solved the "cable length" problem. According to the instructions, installations requiring over 75-100 feet, coaxial cable must be used. By using regular computer twisted cat 5e cable, I had my answer. This was an excellent solution and the unit worked fine. I even used the same cable for the video/audio and EVEN the electric door strike since the cat 5e cable has 4 pair of wires (8 single wires). Since the cable is "twisted", I have no interference and I used over 175 feet of cable. The cable was also cheap compared to the coaxial and regular cable I would have needed for the audio and electric door strike.

The image is vivid and extremely clear. Amazingly the audio is also crisp and free from any interference like humming since my installation had the cat 5e cable routed near electrical lines and several fluorescent lighting fixtures in the ceiling.

The ONLY complaint I have, is the volume on the outside video/intercom unit. It is low and you have to speak up on the base handset to be heard clearly outside. This was the case when I tested the unit prior to installation using 15 feet of regular wire. Also, a suggestion to SAMSUNG, I would be 100% satisfied with the unit if you were able to offer a model that supported several outdoor video/intercom units so I can install one on every door/gate in my home.

If you are looking for a cheap video intercom, I would suggest this model to anyone. Also, if you have cable length problems, or bad picture / audio quality, try my solution using regular PC networking cat 5e twisted cable. It worked for me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea - Bad product
First of all, let me say that I really thought that this was a great idea. Being able to see who's at my door before letting them in was amazing to me. Those visions of "boogiemen" knocking while my wife's home alone seemed about to be erased.

Alas, it was not to be. The salesman at the security store had sold me this as a door bell replacement. When I opened the box and started reading the "instructions" (3rd generation photocopies stapled together) I realized that this equipment required four wires. Doorbell buttons only use two. How is this a replacement for my doorbell?

Anyway, after running wires along the baseboards in my house, which looked tacky, and installing this equipment I was finally able to see and talk to someone at my door. When I first pressed the button and saw the video image I was shocked by it's quality; it was awful! Imagine a mid 70's black and white TV with no antenna, being viewed through a fishbowl. Then, when my wife tried talking to me through the unit and it sounded like a tin can on a string I assumed I'd done something wrong. I re-read the "instructions", check all the wires and then tried contacting Samsung USA. After several calls, I finally got a hold of someone who verified that I'd connected everything properly and that "That's just the picture and sound quality available at level you bought into. You get what you pay for."

I didn't realized that I'd paid for poor video quality, tinny voice and ambivalent customer service. I'll read the fine print more closely next time.

Needless to say the equipment has been removed and returned. I'm looking into some of Samsung's competitors (Aiphone, M&S, Commax) and will definitely be more selective about my security purchases in the future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy and tech support is virtually non-existent.
Buggy buggy buggy! On one computer, I can only get NPF to load on 1/3 of all boots (warm or cold). On my other computer, the central (yet separate) updating program -- Symantec LiveUpdate -- automatically CHANGES its connectivity options ITSELF nearly every day, which causes the "LiveUpdate settings" to become "corrupt," making updating either NPF or NAV impossible unless. . . .

One goes through a cumbersome process of scanning the entire hard drive(s) for LiveUpdate's configuration settings, removes them manually, goes to the control panel to reconfigure NEW settings, and then reboots. This works (temporarily) to fix the problem, but it takes about 10 minutes. Do that 10-12 times per week, and you can imagine the frustration factor.

Periodically, this "quick" fix fails, and I have to go through a bizarrely convoluted "uninstall" process for Symantec LiveUpdate. This LENGTHY process is outlined in a "repair" document that, when the screen type is set to "smallest," requires 6 (SIX) pages of paper to describe and about 45 minutes to actually execute.

When that "repair" no longer works, Symantec tech "support" suggests uninstalling and reinstalling everything (that's their solution to nearly every problem -- they seem to have next to zero troubleshooting expertise or, perhaps, zero WILL to help), a process that can take as long as an hour and a half, depending on your CPU clock speed.

I've mentioned the near-uselessness of their email "tech" support. Frankly, I see no "tech" in their "support." Invariably, one is directed to one of a gazillion lengthy online documents that spells out a time-consuming process to keep the customer running in circles, only to find, ultimately, that there is NO way to fix the problem other than UNINSTALLING everything (remember, there are three components here -- NPF, NAV, and LiveUpdate) and then reinstalling ALL THREE. A 1.5 hour process, at least, as I noted above.

I'm completely fed up with Symantec, especially with their repeated "apologies for any inconvenience. . . ." What? "Any" inconvenience? How about the very REAL and repeatedly tangible wastes of time caused not only by buggy software but by their inability and/or unwillingness to actually troubleshoot an issue or fix the bugs in their software rather than simply playing their default "uninstall and reinstall" card. If they truly were sorry, they'd fix the software rather than directing the customer to "keep. . . running" (hat tip to Ralph Ellison).

I'm no programmer, but even I could give that "techincal support advice" (I use the terms loosely). I have no alternative software solutions to suggest, but I strongly warn users to avoid this software like the plague that it is.

Ironically, the anti-virus software works like a charm (it has intercepted dozens of viral emails), and the firewall is impressive in its capabilities and has been excellent. But the inability to keep the products updated because of unauthorized software auto-reconfigurations and subsequent file corruptions thereby, added to the dozens of hours needed to keep that update component functioning properly have made this software and Symantec's lack of useful tech support infuriating.

Update to Symantec 2005?
Not while I'm alive. . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great if you keep it updated...
We use this at work and it is by far the best antivirus program out there. At home, I use the Macintosh version. The best I can say is that there are so many virii on the Window's platform you'd be silly not to have something like this installed. If you're tired of virii, worms, trojans, spyware, etc..., there is another solution. Get a Mac. The piece of mind you get knowing that the operating system is nearly impossible to infect or crack outweighs the tiny learning curve in switching to a different operating system. How many virii have I gotten at my Mac at home in the last 6 months? Zero. How many at work? At least one a week via email. Even our CIO (Information officer) is putting in a proposal as I write this to migrate the entire server and desktop system to the Mac OS X platform, and we're a fortune 500 company. The money saved alone in downtime from systems getting infected (if you can't work, you can't produce!), more than pays for the minor expense of making the switch. NAV is good. But unless you keep your virus definitions up to date, you're asking for a heap of trouble. And how many users really take the time to update their definitions even when the program prompts them to do so? I can count them on one hand. ... Read more
