I Don't Recommend This Unit
It is pretty quiet and puts out a considerable amount of mist. But there are problems.

1) Despite the fact that it comes with a demineralization cartridge that is supposed to eliminate white dust, there is white dust all over my furniture, and especially electrontic equipment.

2) The unit is designed with many nooks and crannies that make it quite difficult to clean. And you will have to clean it regularly, since brownish gunk accumulates frequently.

3) The opening to fill the water tank is too small to insert a normal sized hand, so it is impossible to wipe clean inside.

4) As other reviewers have noted, a lot of the mist simply falls to the ground around the unit.

5) Do not under any circumstances move the humidifier around while the tank is in place with water in it, or it is very easy for the water to overflow into the air vent and go down inside the base with the electrical components and short them out. This happened to me, and the unit promptly died.

Piece of junk
I bought two of these when my two-month old twins had colds. The best thing I can say about this humidifier is it did help their congestion. Unfortunately, it completely drenches everything (babies, furniture, floor, rugs, etc.). I tried putting down vinyl cloths followed by every blanket and towel I own. Everything is totally drenched in the morning including our laminate floor. The laminate floor is now damaged despite all of our precautions. I went out and purchased the Vicks humidifiers which don't drench everything but don't seem to work very well either. I'm on the search for something else.

had two break on me
I have had two of these units break on me. The first broke within three weeks so I was able to exchange it under the warranty. The new unit then also broke in under three weeks. Its a waste of money and of poor design.

Burned out after 24 hours
Got what we thought was a deal on this unit from WalMart (closeout at $10), too good to be true. Then, when something seems too good to be true...
For the first 24 hours it ran quietly, looked pretty nice. Now it just looks nice, and smells bad (burning electronics smell), and has quit completely.

It's going back today.

I'm VERY Happy With My Holmes Humidifier!!!
I recently purchased this Humidifier (about a month ago) and I have to say overall I'm very happy with it. I haven't had any of the problems other people are saying they had in here except for the soaking of the floor from it. I raised the humidifier about 6 to 7 feet from the ground (placed it on a shelf) and since then it hasn't wet the floor. From my experience, all Ultrasonic Humidifiers that shoot mist wet everything under it. I also have a Sumbeam 701 that does the same thing BUT overall I'm very happy with that also. Expensive, but very quiet and effective
Having used a Venta humidifier in Germany several years ago, I was delighted to see that they are selling in the U.S. now as well. I had a case of sticker shock though, as they are now much more expensive than their older models used to be, but since I used to be very happy with them, I decided to go ahead and buy one anyway.

All Venta humidifiers belong to the class of cool mist humidifiers, which in my opinion is the best principle, as you don't "over-humidify" the room. Normally a cool mist humidifier has a filter that sucks up water from the tank and a fan blows air through the filter. Thus the water evaporates into the air and increases its humidity.

The difference in the Venta humidifier is that it doesn't use filters, but two arrays of plastic disks that rotate through the water. A fan on top of the device sucks suckes air through those disk arrays and the water drops that were lifted up from the tank evaporate.

One of my major gripes with other cool mist humidifiers is that the fan is very noisy even on the lowest setting. The Venta fan is pleasantly quiet. I keep the device in my bedroom at night on the lowest fan speed and I don't notice the fan at all.

While it is true that you won't have to replace filters every few months, you WILL need to replace the water treatment additive at every cleaning cycle (usually 10-14 days), so there ARE some maintenance costs. The LW44 comes with two fillings of the additive, afterwards you have to spent about USD 16-18 for a bottle of the water treatment which will last for 12 cleaning cycles (4-6 months). Venta also sells a cleaning solution, but according to their manual you won't need it in most cases. In any case the cleaning solution costs about $10 and is only good for one cleaning, so using it frequently will really drive the maintenance costs up.

All in all this is indeed the best humidifier that I ever had. I'm not giving it five stars, because I still think the price is outrageously high.

Effective,Intelligent & Expensive
I live in a desert~like New York City apartment and have owned my Venta Air Washer for almost exactly two years.During this time it has been operating on the "high" setting, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.The Air Washer lives up to all of the manufacturer's claims.

The Air Washer is a product of fanatical German engineering,over~design and bullet~proof construction, which accounts for it's rather grotesque price.However, I have owned products of inferior engineering and construction that have had to be replaced after one or two seasons.It is obvious I will own my Air Washer for many years to come.

The principles of operation could not be more simple (it's like a High School science project developed into a luxury product):

1) A fan blows room air straight down into a reservoir of water.

2) In this reservoir of water, a few dozen disks are slowly rotating to multiply the surface area that is wet.

3) Because you are blowing air onto a enlarged wet surface you are multiplying the rate of evaporation.

4) Humidified air is exhausted out of the Air Washer through vents in the side.

THIS WORKS.

On the "high" setting the water reservoir needs to be refilled daily in my apartment (this is highly dependent on your local weather or heating cycle).I end up carrying a couple gallons of water to the device or carrying the device to the bathtub and then back to its spot in my livingroom.

The design of the Air Washer is "neutral."It sits unobtrusive and un~noticed in a corner.It is nearly silent.It is built like a tank: It would be a challenge to damage this product on purpose.

Why not Five Stars?

The Venta Air Washer consumes expendables.You need a water treatment solution to prevent mineral deposits forming on the rotating disks mentioned above (weekly).AND you need a periodic cleaning solution to remove deposits that develop pn the bottoms and walls of the reservoir.I have tried operating the Air Washer without these things.They are required for optimal performance.

Like the device itself, the Venta treatment and cleaning solutions work perfectly and simply.But, THE EXPENDIBLES ARE EXPENSIVE!Assume youy will spend US$50.00 per year.

Also, you would think that for a company selling a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR humidifier, the Venta aroma therapy scents would smell a bit less like a Central American bordello (not that I've ever seen one of those).Skip these even if they're free samples.

Big difference in quality of air
The Hunter system I own looks a tad different cosmetically but has the same specifications. It came in a three pack, with two smaller units.

I did a little shopping before setting on this system. Of course I have to admit that I also own several Hunter ceiling fans. I found I could get filters on line and in local home improvement stores locally.

I have a thundering hurdy of cats so I have to deal with litter, food, fur, and several obscure smells. So I needed something that would suck it out of the air, not just catch particles as they pass. And this animal claims to turn the whole room over at approximately 6 times an hour.

Well you could imagine my surprise when I found that I did not have to leave it on high or all day to have the clean air effect.Just strategically placed where I stay and near the cat areas, the systems does their magic using the minimum speed setting.

Even though I leave them in standing up to have maximum walking space they can also be laid on their side like on a shelf. I still have to watch where I walk as the cats like to lay in front of them to catch the breeze.

In an emergency you can crank the system up to the top speed; which in general is not that noisy but it defiantly puts out white noise.

You hear pluses and minuses about ionized air. With a separate ionizer you can test it for yourself. I found that it did make everything seem fresher, yet I felt I smelled ionized air for the rest of the day so I use it sparingly for extraordinarily smelling times. The system works just fine at cleaning the air without it.

I had had to read the manual for recommended filter change times. I suggested the carbon filter every three months and the other filter about twice a year.

A real and surprising added plus is that I can sleep better with the system on.

The Holmes HAPF622R Blizzard remote control power fan brings a little more of the outdoors in with its innovative breeze modes. In addition to the standard ON setting, the Holmes Blizzard offers two settings which switch speeds randomly to mimic the feeling of natural breezes. As for power, the Blizzard has a five-fin fan blade which moves more air per rotation than the more common four-fin blade. And the front grill can oscillate as well, which increases the width of the cone of air being moved.

Powerful portable fan
This is a nice lightweight fan that packs a lot of power -- and modern conveniences -- in a good-looking, compact, and portable package.Features include oscillating grill, simulated breeze mode, and an electronic timer, plus a handy remote to control the whole shebang without getting up from your chair. Digital Media User
Having recently bought adaptec's "Media-Center", I have found it somewhat difficult to work with and disapointing. Several problems are evident when trying to record from TV feed as mentioned in some of the reviews for this product.

As if that wasn't enough of a problem , I also found out after contacting customer service that one can ONLY use the device w/ the two provided applications that come bundled with the package. Indeed very limited in my opinion especially for such an expensive device.

For all parties interested: I suggest just using a firewire/i.link cable if camcorder/camera supports it. Windows automatically and usually detects your device. Also, there are cheaper capture devices if all you need is to capture from a device except TV. As far as software, I've found that windows movie maker is a lot easier to work with and it worked best for my case. Good luck to all of you on your purchase!

I called the tech support. They sent me an email on how to install the drivers which didn't work, so I called tech support again. They had never heard of this problem, but told me that the problem was with my computer. So I reformatted my hard-drive. When I tried installed the drivers the computer would freeze up and my mouse would not work. I called tech support one last time. Their response was something is wrong with my computer and they could not help me. I tried this on another pc and I ran into the same problems. I sent this back to Amazon with a note explaining all the problems I was having asking for a full refund.
Don't buy this product! I am a computer tech at a university and this was the first time I had any problems like this or ever heard someone say sorry we can't help you.

Working flawlessly for VHS Camcorder conversion
I purchased this yesterday for converting old home camcorder tapes to DVD and it's working as advertised with good quality.

I haven't bothered reading any of the instructions and it's working fine. No hassle installation.

The digital output is good quality.

Can't give five stars though as I havent tried to record anything from TV yet and the software does seem a little limited in editing options (although haven't read any help or tutorials).

If I could score it lower, I would: and wish.....
..I had checked the other reviews here first before buying it in a brick and mortar store. Install was flawless. But it would never capture video from neither of two 8mm video recorders (to either DVD-R or the hard drive). Each attempt to capture either never started, or froze shortly after, or simply locked up my machine. This was working on a new machine with a fast processor, a ton of ram and a buttload of available hard drive space. Not ready for prime, and surely not worth the best part of two $100 bills. Adaptec products (at least their PCI-based ones, which I've used in the past) are usually decent. But this is device is simply a stinker. Avoid! ... Read more

Does the job, but quite loud.
I spent a lot of time in the store looking over humidifiers, and finally decided on the Holmes. I like the design and features. The good point is it works very well at humidifying a small room. The bad is that it is VERY noisy. There's no way you could have it on high - it sounds like a jet engine. On low it is still quite loud. I have it in my son's room, and the white noise actually helps him sleep, but I would never be able to have it in my own room. If the noise isn't an issue, then this is a great humidifier, but I believe most people would prefer a quieter unit.

Simply too loud.
I have had this unit for one week. I am returning it tomorrow because it is ridiculously loud. Forget sleeping--I can barely hear the TV over it! If noise is not an issue, then this item might still be a good deal for you. I paid $24.99, which I thought was a good price for it. The positives are that it holds 2.5 gallons, instead of the usual 2 gallons in this price range, and it has a built-in moniter to let you know when it's time to change the filter. It says it can run for 24 hours without having to refill the water. I did not test this aspect, as I only run it while I sleep (or at least that's my goal). Another negative is that it has a sticker attached that says to call an 800 number before using. Thinking it might be a safety issue, I called. It automatically records the number--with registered name--and address you call from and gives you a voice response sales pitch. That ticked me off. I just bought a Honeywell warm mist unit today. Nice little fan
I love this fan! I've had several of them, over the years, which I've used extensively.
My only problem with the fan is that the clip breaks easily, so if you plan on moving it often, be aware that the plastic clamp on the bottom will eventually crack.
On the other hand -- I have one, on which the clip broke quite some time ago, that I've clamped to a shelf by other means, and after more than eight years of daily use the motor is still going strong.
The front is easy enough to take off for cleaning purposes, just take care not to dislodge the motor while cleaning the fan blades, or it won't run properly afteward.
All in all -- a great little fan. I couldn't live without mine! Just take care in how you handle it, and it will last you for years.

Nice, Until It Broke
This was a great fan. It cliped onto anything and supplied a great cooling breeze. I bought the small white one for some of my co-workers in a local resturaunt kitchen. But the dishwashers were wreckless with it, and oh yeah, they busted the hell out of it. I got mad and told them you have to be careful with that stuff. They did the same thing to a larger Windmere fan I gave to them last summer. They said the blade broke off and smoke came out of the back of it. Yeah Right. I've owned many of fans and that's never happened to me. People just need to know that you have to be careful with fans. They're very delicate and you can get hurt. ... Read more
