1-0 out of 5 stars The company ignores their warranty requests.
3 weeks ago, I contacted Maglite for a replacement switch for my 4-D flashlight, in which the switch failed. The customer service rep asked me for my serial number, which I gave her and she assured me that I could get a replacement switch. I gave her my name and address and she said that a shipment had just gone out, and it would be in the next shipment. That was fine with me. Days turned into weeks. Still no part. More days went by. STILL no part in the mail.

Hmmmm. Is this how long time customers are treated? I previous owned a variety of their flashlights, from an AAA Solitaire to a 5-D flashlight, at least 5 in total. My dad has purchased in the neighborhood of 15 or more himself, starting in about '86 when someone else turned him onto Maglites.

Customer support is as important to me as the product itself. Has customer support become a casualty of a tough economy?

This long-time customer will have to look at alternatives the next time he's buying a flashlight.

5-0 out of 5 stars You couldn't break it if you tried.
You could use this thing as a baseball bat and it would still shine bright and strong EVERYTIME. Hands down the best flashlite, period.

3-0 out of 5 stars Carry this for a few years & you'll walk like John Wayne too
Mag Instrument S6D016 Black 6D Cell MagLite Flashlight. Over the years, I just needed and "HAD TO HAVE" that bigger flashlight! It's a guy thing. This is the one light that lots of law enforcement carried. It was effective as a flashlight and as a tool if the use of force needed to be escalated in subduing a BG (Bad Guy) - Orders given with confidence and with commanding voice, physical force including night stick or Mag Light, side arm, shot gun).
There is a lot going on within the technology of flashlights recently. LED, Lithium batteries, focus bezels, etc. The Mag has fallen from grace a bit technologically, but is still a great flashlight for police / emt INCLUDING looking for and if need be using the light defensively as a weapon on criminals, cockroaches / terrorists or signalling for a chopper pick up. The Mag Instrument S6D016 Black 6D Cell MagLite Flashlight is very durable and they are proven reliable. But even the police and emt and military are switching over to more tecnologically advanced products and techniques to go along with the new equipment.. They have to. Their lives and the lives of others depend on the best equipment available. And for a long time that was Mag Light.
Don't get me wrong. I've depended on Mag lites of all sizes for years. But head to head , theSurefire brands have quickly surpassed Mag lite in every important aspect of flashlights - usable light power, smaller size and lighter weight.
TheMag Instrument S6D016 Black 6D Cell MagLite Flashlight is a good value and I have several in the house and the larger trunks of some of my vehicles. But they're being replaced by Surefires as they wear out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
MagLites have been and no doubt always will be the best flashlights ever made!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Lite Yet
I bought this 6-cell MagLite for my boyfriend as a gift. He now keeps it next to him all day. This is the brightest and 'badest' light out there. We also own two 4-cell MagLites, but this is by far the best value. I recommend it to anyone for the indoors or outdoor activities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great spotlight with several minor flaws
Before I start, I should advise that my version of this spotlight has a grey metal body with black plastic trim. There are several other variations I have seen; (red/black, "safety yellow", blue/white, camo). The functional differences appear to be these:
The position of the area light feature.
The grey model is aluminum; I think the others are all plastic.

I am writing this review after my initial inspection of the spotlight. The light is currently on its initial charge cycle; I will come back and complete the review when I have had an opportunity to examine the bulb performance and battery life.

First, let me say this this thing is _huge_.The pictures simply do not express the monster size of this lamp. The dimensions, as quoted from the owner's manual:

Height: 12 in (base to top)
Width: 7.4 in (across front of beam reflector assembly)
Length: 9 in (front to back of spotlight head)

This lamp is probably larger than most automotive emergency kits can accomodate.Still, I can think of no better lamp to have in a roadside emergency, and that makes it worth working around the bulk.I keep it in my car's trunk, in a large rubbermaid storage bin that accomodates both the lantern and several essentials for emergency repairs (fluids, a toolkit, etc.).

Some users may find the weight an annoyance. This lamp weighs in at a hefty 7.8 pounds, and may be uncomfortable to hold for extended periods.Given that most of the weight comes from the two lantern batteries, I will be disappointed if the lantern does not boast considerable battery life (I will return to report on battery life after the first charging cycle).

The spotlight is powered by two rechargeable 6V lead-acid lantern batteries. The first resides in the spotlight's base, adding weight where it's needed to maintain freestanding stability. The second battery is in the top, and while this does lend the unit a semi-topheavy balance, I don't think it would fall over except in a high wind.

The spotlight body is made of aluminum, which I found particularly impressive (as I expected plastic).Although this adds to the spotlight's already considerable weight, I think it's a great trade off for a heavy-duty lantern like this. The front and back of the spotlight are molded plastic "safety caps" (as they are called by the owner's manual). These I am not impressed with, as a "safety cap" should protect the unit.Cheap plastic offers no significant protection, and given the weight of this unit, the "safety cap" will undoubtedly break if it is ever dropped.I think these provide more marketing hype than they do actual safety. That being said, no lamp like this will survive unscathed if dropped from any significant height, so just don't drop it.

The big lens at the front of the lamp is surrounded by a protective rubber bezel.I think the bezel is hefty enough to absorb most normal shocks, and provides the best protection possible without compromising beam projection. This light would be made far superior if Vector exchanged the plastic "safety caps" for more rubber like the excellent front bezel.

The spotlight can be held by the pistol-grip style handle (I prefer the basket-style handles of some of the competing lamps, but it's a small compromise for what is overall a much better lantern). The spotlight also comes with a shoulder strap, which may make the weight a bit easier to cope with.Of course, it can also be left freestanding (though there is no way to angle the lantern up or down to illuminate a higher or lower work area).

The lantern has a 12 V receptacle in the front for running anything that can be plugged into your car's cigarette lighter (cell phones and the like). The safe current limit of this receptacle is 10 amps.A small rubber boot closes over the receptacle when not in use. This boot could have used a redesign, as it does not fit tightly inside the receptacle (it merely flops in and out with no insertion or removal force). This reduces the weather resistance of the spotlight; hardly an oversight one expects in a light advertised by Vector to be "water resistant".Annoying, but fixable with a bit of weatherproof sealing tape.

The back of the light has a three-position switch:

1.area light
2.single (one bulb lit - 1.5 million CP)
3.twin (both bulbs lit - 3 million CP)

The area light is more of a gimmick than a useful accessory. It's not bright enough to light up an area of any meaningful size. This fact means that anyone who needs both the spotlight and area light functions will end up buying a separate area light anyway, thus making its inclusion here redundant (though its inclusion does not detract from the quality of the excellent spotlight).

The spotlight is activated by sliding the rear selector switch to "single" or "twin" and squeezing the trigger.Sadly, the trigger does not lock "on" and "off"; as soon as you release it, the spotlight goes out. This is particularly disappointing, as the owner's manual advertises this as a "simple two-position lock trigger".The diagrams in the manual even show a lock switch on the side of the pistol grip that is mysteriously absent from my model. If this trigger locks, I can't figure out how (and the manual doesn't specify). The primary benefit of having a freestanding spotlight is the ability to ignite it, point it at your work area, and walk away. This frees both hands to work while the light provides illumination.I plan on resolving this by strategic application of a plastic zip tie.Not a perfect solution, but better than trying to change a tire with my right hand while balancing an 8 pound spotlight in my left.

The spotlight may be recharged by two methods:

12V / 500mA AC adaptor (included)
12V DC car cigarette lighter adaptor (included)

The instructions indicate a full charge cycle requires about 24 - 30 hours, and warns not to charge for more than 36 hours. This suggests that no overcharge protection circuitry was included in the AC adaptor's design (bummer).Fortunately, the base of the lantern has four LEDs that progressively indicate the current battery charge level. When all four LEDs are lit, disconnect the charger. The charging instructions repeatedly offer the dubious advice to recharge the batteries after every use (even on a partial discharge). What I know of Ni-Cad rechargeables tells me they should be drained completely prior to recharging, but I don't know if the same principle applies to lead-acid batteries.

Curiously, the AC and DC adaptors each use separate connections on the back of the spotlight.I assume this is attributable to 2 factors:

1.The AC adaptor is a trickle charger (a full charge takes over 20 hours). The DC (cigarette lighter) adaptor charges in 3 - 5 hours.
2.The AC adaptor can only recharge the batteries, while the DC adaptor can recharge the batteries and simultaneously power the spotlight (if your car's cigarette lighter can pump out the required 15 amps -- enough to nuke most cigarettes).

Both of the recharge connections are exposed to the elements (no rubber caps to speak of). This is another unfortunate oversight in a lamp that claims to be "water resistant".Vaguely annoying, but again, correctable with a bit of weatherproof sealing tape.

The lamp bulbs are a pair of automotive fog lamps (type H3 quartz halogen - 12V / 55W), easily found at any auto parts store.I purchased a pair of extra bulbs at Wal Mart for $8 (though you can spend up to $40/pair if you want the fancy blue ones).Unfortunately, changing the bulbs cannot be done without a Phillips screwdriver, which may be inconvenient if a bulb dies when no tools are available to disassemble the lamp housing.Consider it just one more reason to keep a toolkit in your car.

Pros:

Cool LED charge level indicator.
Solid aluminum construction.
12 total amp-hours of battery capacity.
Freestanding.
Handy 12V DC accessory charging receptacle.
Includes convenient carrying strap.

Cons:

Trigger does not lock, despite manufacturer's claim.
Not as water-resistant as advertised.
Portability is limited with a lamp this large.
No way to angle the lamp head up or down in freestanding operation.
Apparently useless area lamp feature.
No toolless bulb replacement.
AC adaptor has no overcharge protection circuit.
12V charging receptacle boot cover is a poor fit.

Despite the numerous minor complaints I have about the design of the Sport Spot, I am still very satisfied with my purchase. All of the flaws I've observed are either minor or easily corrected (or both).I have examined the competitors carefully, and I am confident this is the best lantern to stow in your car's emergency kit.

I will review the following aspects of the lamp's performance, and I will return to complete this review once I have gathered more info on:

1.Brightness
2.Battery life
3.Cost of replacement batteries
4.Support (yes, Vector offers a toll-free support line; and I intend to try it out)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Better and brighter than I ever expected. It makes my car headlights look dim in comparison. I couldn't find a tree far enough away that I couldn't illuminate!

The earlier comments about it being like a helicopter spotlight - absolutely true! 10 out of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is like carrying a piece of the sun around!
very solid and brightest light i have ever used

4-0 out of 5 stars can't miss
This'll double as a Highway Radar Gun for tax-challenged counties, as a peacemaker for shotgun-bereft homeowners, and an adequate Interrogation Light for third-world tyrants without dependable power grids. Both Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles ought to see the light with this sucker. Water-resistant? Dunno. Type of sealed battery? Dunno. Vector's previous 9-pound 3-million candlepower twin-halogen torch, the VEC139Y, a.k.a. ASIN B000077CPB, uses environmentally unfriendly Lead-Acid; what about the VEC-120S? FYI, CCFL means Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. When the conversation dies down, point out the Battery Status Indicator's current reading... Since love is blind, 'tis better to study one's potential consort REAL good beforehand with the Vector 120S or 139Y. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay for the price, but significantly outdated technology
Positives:
* built like a tank
* reliable
* Well designed switch

Negatives:

* extremely poor beam quality (full of holes and rings, yellow-brown beam color)
* old technology (doesn't use a Luxeon star LED bulb)
* Very little usable sidespill

Overall: For a $20'ish light, its fine for the average person that is satisfied with a mediocre flashlight. However, the excessively poor beam quality (yellow beam that turns brown as the batteries dim, plus rings and holes in the beam) and mediocre sidespill really take lots away from this outdated flashlight.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
What else can I add to the growing great reviews for this product?

All I can say is that this is one of the best flash lights I have ever used. I like it so much that I bought two of these: one for work and one for my car.

I work the night shift. I use the work one often. It is bright and very solid. The size is just about right. It is not too big like its larger brothers, but just big enough to feel secure while holding it.

A great value! If you are looking to buy a flashlight, look no further. This is the perfect one for the home consumer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imminently durable
I've had my Mag 2 D-cell flashlight for over 10 years now, and it still works flawlessly. While other flashlights have rotted, rusted, or just plain broken, my Mag still shines. It's literally the last flashlight you'll need to buy.

The fact that you can adjust the beam from a broad floodlight to a focused spotlight is nice, though I've found that mine doesn't focus into a small, even circle as well as I would like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Flashlight For Home And Vehicle!
Anyone who lives as far out in the rural countryside as I do gets accustomed to power interruptions, whether they are due to downed power lines from ice storms, someone hitting a key telephone pole and knocking out a transformer, or is the result of one of the occassional electrical storms we have during the warmer months of the year. In any and all of these circumstances I can always depend on my collection of mag-lights to see me through the darkness of the house in order to light my well-used candles and oil lamps until the power is finally restored. I also have one in each of my two trucks, and when I recently narrowly missed hitting a startled deer late at night and went off the road into a muddy field, the trusty mag light was invaluable in helping me find a winching point to pull myself out of the muddy gully. So, whether it is a venture down into the blackened hole my basement becomes late at night, or finding my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I can always depend on my mag lights to candle-power my way wherever I am going. I have four or five of the middle-sized ones like the one displayed here, but actually also have three or four of the largest ones as well. I love mine, and although I seem to misplace at least one or two a year, I always have an ample supply of both mag-lights and replacement batteries because I find they are absolutely essential out here in the woods. Get one today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great compact flashlight
I love this flashlight. the LED's are plenty bright for most uses, and the zenon bulb outshines my old 3D cell Maglight. Seems durable, but I have never had a need to test it in extreme conditions. It is also a bit long to stash in a pocket or the small purses that my wife prefers, but they do make a lithium cell version that is smaller if that is your need. Personally, I like the cheapness of the 3AA's

The LED's do give off a blue tint that my wife isn't too fond of that, but the trade off for 80 hours of battery life is more than worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Flashlight!!!
I bought the Streamlight twin-task 2D cell flashlight about a 10 months ago. It is a great flashlight, very bright and the batteries last a long time. I work as an aircraft maintenance technician and in my line of work have sujected this light to many different enviroments; from high temperatures to cold and rain, it even survived a 25' drop from the tail of one aircraft. A few scratches later it still is working like the first day I took it out of the package. My two former Maglights have not been able to take all that abuse.

If anyone is looking to buy a new flaslight I highly recomend this one over any other. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DYNO-MITE
The best flashlight in the world. Almost too pretty to bang around the shop. All the pro's use them( police, fire,mt rescue etc)because these things are bullet proof and built to last. From it's self cleaning switch to it's on board bulb storage and rubber seals this thing is a work of art.Do yourself a favor and buy a Mag Instrument.

Now get out there and light up the night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flashlight perfection
Need a flashlight? Contemplating whether to buy the El Cheapo plastic flashlight, or the Mag? Get the Mag if you can afford it. After all, you get what you pay for, and with the Mag, you get the embodyment of flashlight perfection.

Just the weight of the Mag with batteries in it gives me a sense of satisfaction (for some reason). It is a heft bugger, but that's why it's so durable. The light is also crisp and powerful.

Need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous flashlight in an indestructible case
I own four of these 2 D-Cell mag lights. There's one in each of my cars, and one on each floor of my home.

They are bright, focusable, and it always turns on without fail. No more shaking your flashlight to keep it lit! It's well weighted, so you won't get tired by carrying it, and dropping it won't break the lens or the case.

We also purchased an orange plastic cone that attaches to the front like many police officers have for directing traffic, which makes this flashlight perfect for walking at dusk or at night.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TOOL, Buy a bright color
Agree with all the comments on durability. Also, buyers should note, that the company believes enough in its products to offer warrantee, replace parts, etc. This isn't meant to be disposable. They are also smart enough to have made it in multiple colors. Though it is tempting to go for the flat black, having a reflective, bright color helps you find this one in the back seat, tool case a lot faster. Also, this is good gift for the friends, family, business associates. No one was unhappy to receive one of these.

3-0 out of 5 stars D-Cell flashlight doesn't hold a candle to the rechargables!
The construction of MagLite flashlights is great. However, if you really need some "juice", get yourself a rechargable version. They are a lot more pricey (around $100), but if you really need a flashlight for work -- it is well worth it. Many police officers (like myself) use rechargable MagLites. They typically hold a charge throughout an 8 hour shift and are a LOT brighter. They are rugged and reliable -- the D-cell type make good "back-up" lights though. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, outdated
I've carried a 2AA mini-mag for over 12 years. For the price, its a good light. BUT, with LED technology becoming common, this light is becoming outdated. On the positive side, the Mag 2AA is a well built and reliable device. However, the beam quality is very poor. Its not that bright to start out with, but worst yet it loses brightness very quickly and turns brown as the batteries decrease. The beam is full of holes, rings, and blemishes no matter how much it is focused (adjusted).

Having said that, one can buy an LED conversion unit from Opalec and install it on a new Mini-mag. The Opalec conversion unit provides steady brigtness for 10 hours and turns a Mini-mag into a state-of-the-art compact flashlight. I have an Opalec unit on my Mini-Mag, and I no longer use the standard Mag bulbs--the standard Mag bulbs are junk in my opinion

Even with that said, there are much better compact flashlights available. The Pelican M6 LED is shorter in length than a Mini-mag, and yet is so much brighter with a superior beam (pure white beam that stays white as the batteries are depleated).

If price is your sole concern, the Minimag will get the job done, but at a mediocre performance level (compared to more modern designs). The Minimag is a reliable and well built light, despite its inferior optics. For the price, its good enough to give a moderate recommendation. If Maglite upgrades their design and offers LEDs, I think that will really improve their beam quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Light... But....
I was given this light by my brother and it works great. The casing is very strong and duriable, and the flashlight is very bright for it's small size. You can still even see the beam in a well lit room.

The only reason I'm bothering to put in a review is to give a word of warning. While deffinately better than any other flashlight of this size I've had, the on/off switching method isn't perfect. The regular Maglights are said to have superior switches that do not fail as is so common with a regular flashlight. However the Double A Battery Mags have a different type of on/off switch. With this type of switch you screw the head in or out to turn the light on. This switching method is not perfect because you also adjust the focus of the beam with by twisting the head as well.

The problem my little Mag has is that at the tightest focus, the head is rather loose on the casing and can rock back and forth. This rocking can cause the flashlight to shut on and off when the head pushes against the off switch/lighting assembly. Most of the time when I'm using a flashlight, I want the strongest beam/tightest focus, and it can be a bit bothersome to jiggle the head so the light remains on.

This thing is still better than any other mini flashlight I've ever seen, but I just wanted to let those of you looking know that it's still not perfect.

I'd recomend you get one anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durability information
I purchased a mini-maglite in 1994 while in the Marine Crops in a raid-company. I practiced raids on Zodiacs (the rubber rafts that you see special forces use in the movies)and everywhere I went I had my flashlight with me. This flashlight was dunked in the ocean countless time...dropped...kicked...used as a hammer...left in the rain. You get my drift. To this day I still have it...it looks rough, but still works the same as the day bought it. It is amazing. The only maintenance I have done was to wash the sand and salt off of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Once great now a relic.
While the quality of the build of this instrument is top notch, the technology is outdated. Several companies have improved the beam quality, bulb life and electrical reliability of similar products. Solid state technology (LED light) has made the standard D-cell light a dim unreliable unit. The company has rested on it's laurels for too long. Other companies have made brighter smaller longer life units in standard bulb (incandescent) and solid state (LED) formats for a number of years now. See companies like Streamlight, SureFire, Brinkmann and search for "LED Flashlights" for the whole array of new technologies.

Most of my Mag Lights have been retired in favor of LED technology lights with comparable output plus extended battery life and bulbs that last for 50,000 plus hours. Mag faces the risk of becoming the 8-track version of the flashlight in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work of art that works!
this truly is a work of art! the best flashlite money can buy,its been there for me in many dark places..

5-0 out of 5 stars The best flashlights bar none!
This is Maglite - the most robust, simply designed, durable flashlight ever. All except the tiniest maglites share a number of common features: super-bright bulbs, waterproof seals, a twistable head which adjusts the spread of the beam from spot to flood, and a spare bulb in a padded compartment in the base. This is the 2D-cell version, portable but still satisfyingly solid in feel. Larger versions take 3, 4 or even 6 D-cells.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard For Flashlights
What can you say about a MagLite, they're almost indestructable, very reliable and come with a spare lamp in the back. You are far more likely to have yours stolen or lost than to break it. Heck, you could probably even open coconuts with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS FLASHLIGHT!
Hey all you people out there that are looking for a great, useful, and durable flashlight! This is the one that you are looking for! it comes in a nice color with style! and is very resistant to most damaging collisions! It can also change its light concentration to wide to narrow and also has a candle mode which is very hefty when it comes it sticky situations. this flashlight is by far the best i ever had and will ever have! its virtually undestructable and keeps on working! and it comes with a spare lightbulb which is cool! i highly recommend this flashlight to anyone! this one is the one to buy! or you can get its relatives which come in different colors and sizes. the price is just right for such a great product that with last you generations to come! ... Amazon.com Review

Unless you've been hiding for the past few decades, you're sure to recognize this classic from Mag Instrument. The solid dependability of Mag flashlights is hard to top, which explains why the brand is so popular with police officers, security guards, and other people who can't afford to be left in the dark. This three-D-cell model is great for home use and an essential part of any home emergency kit. It shines as bright as anyone could ask for, and a simple twist of the head changes the beam from a spot to a luminous floodlight. Having a Mag flashlight on hand can keep an inconvenience, like a November blackout, from becoming a small disaster. It is also a great light for illuminating the woods and keeping the bears at bay on summer camping trips. The weighty feel of a Mag flashlight also offers a sense of security in the dark that other flashlights just don't have, enough to give you the confidence to confront any basement bogeyman or mountain monster. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, cute, cute....
When my husband received this as a gift....I promptly stole it from him. It is nice and light and you can keep it in your purse or in the glove box in the car. If your headlights went out you could use it to drive by...just kidding. The light output is very impressive. I like this size since the larger 4 and 5 battery sizes are very heavy. I wish they would dream up something besides the diamond-knurled grip. It gives me the same feeling as chalk scrapping on a chalkboard does!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Mag Light
This one is just as bright as the AA Mini MagLite and is considerably thinner and lighter. Extremely durable. I've had one for several years now and it's taken quite a beating in the car and in my toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable little light
This is the perfect size light to carry with you in your pocket, for whatever you need to do. In my case, I use it to examine patients in my work as a doctor. The beam is strong and it has not failed me yet. Highly recommended- with Mag, you can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for medical professionals.
If you're like me, you're always shining lights into people's eyes, ears, and mouth in clinic and on the wards. It's important when checking pupillary reactivity to have a strong, even, consistent light that you can trust!

This light fits the bill perfectly. It clips into your whitecoat breast pocket and stays there. It comes in several stylish colors. And the ability to manually focus the light allows you to eliminate annoying 'hot spots' and 'cold spots' in the beam, common with cheap penlights, that might lead the naive medical student to miscall an afferent pupillary defect on the difficult 'swinging-flashlight' test!

I've been caring for patients with my Mini MagLite for more than 3 years. I'd urge you to do the same!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for camping
I used this light for years when I led camping trips with inner city teens. It worked out perfectly when trying to negotiate a small tent. You can hold it in your mouth to direct it's light or use the candle feature. Either way it's small size and ruggedness was exactly what I needed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't drop this one on your foot!
Mag Instrument S5D016 Black 5D Cell MagLite Flashlight. Over the years, I just needed and "HAD TO HAVE" that bigger flashlight! It's a guy thing. This is the one (and the 6D-Cell) light that lots of law enforcement carried.

The Mag Instrument S5D016 Black 5D Cell MagLite Flashlight is very durable and they are proven reliable.

The Mag Instrument S5D016 Black 5D Cell MagLite Flashlight is a good value and I have several in the house and the vehicles. But they're being replaced by Surefires as they wear out.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, but large
Unless you are a police officer, or just an exceptionally violent person, you really don't need a flashlight this large. Go for the 3-cell one (it's actually much easier to swing in a ..., anyway). By the way... notice how they have an odd number of batteries in all these flashlights... you think maybe it's a secret arrangement with Duracell (snicker)???

5-0 out of 5 stars A real man's flashlight
This is one great flashlight, fit for a king!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there any better flashlight on the market? I doubt it.
I have one of these stashed by the back door for forays into the dark of our compost heap. (It gets dark way before dinner up north here and we compost our vegetable scraps.) Then there's one in the car, of course. It happens to make a good ad-hoc weapon, by the way. And perfectly legal for self-defense. Then there's one next to the bed and one in the guest room.

The 5 D-cell means lots of light, lots of life. The size is easy to find. The head design allows you can change the beam from spot to flood by a simple twist. It's treated to resist corrosion (have you ever looking inside one of those cheap steel or aluminum flashlights? They may fail even if you keep the batteries fresh if they are corroded. It's even water resistant. There's an extra lamp in the tail cap, and it has a good warranty. Makes a terrific housewarming present, so don't overlook this as an idea for a new neighbor or a friend who's bought a new house. Can't go wrong with one of these babies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supreme Power and Durability In One Flashlight!
Anyone who lives as far out in the rural countryside as I do gets accustomed to power interruptions, whether they are due to downed power lines from ice storms, someone hitting a key telephone pole and knocking out a transformer, or is the result of one of the occasional electrical storms we have during the warmer months of the year.

So, in this time of frequent brown-outs and power interruptions, whether it is a venture down into the blackened hole my basement becomes late at night, or finding my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I can always depend on using my mag lights to candle-power my way wherever I am going. I have two of the five battery-sized ones like the one displayed here, but actually also have three or four of the 'smaller' three or four battery sizes as well. I love mine, and although I seem to misplace at least one or two a year, I always have an ample supply of both mag-lights and replacement batteries because I find they are absolutely essential out here in the woods. Get one today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pen light out there!
This little thing is thin, lightweight, solid construction, and cranks out more lux than I've ever seen from any other pen light. Incredibly handy and not heavy when you find it stuck in your mouth for 20 minutes looking for something that fell into one of those crevices under your car seat that is, for all intents and purposes, a black hole. You'll have a hard time finding AAAA batteries at most stores (not that you'll need them often as it runs A LONG TIME per set), but here's a trick. Peal open a good quality (copper top) 9 volt battery and inside you'll find 6 AAAA batteries that will fit!!! I will be getting one of these for each car since I've discovered this nifty trick!! For this price at amazon, it's a must have and great gift that anybody is likely to appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dependable
While not the brightest flashlight, The stylus is ultra dependable.
I've had mine three or four years, it has bounced around my motorcycle bags on camping trips, sits beside my bed in case of power outages, etc.
It is very usable lighting your way walking, tasklighting, etc. I would not use it to investigate a dark warehouse.
AAAA batteries not too easy to find, but they last forever it seems. ... Read more
