1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible cable
I have had nothing but trouble with this cable. Mine is nearly impossible to push in to the charger base for a complete connection. Plus, the serial technology is aniquated to put it mildly. I like my Forerunner 201, but this computer hook-up is sorely in need of an update.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cable fine for foretrex 101
To correct the earlier comment, this cable can be useful in certain cases.I bought this cabel to use with my foretrex 101, which doesn't ship with a cable. It works fine, though make sure it is pushed all the way in.No "charging base" is needed to use this cable with the foretrex 101 since the foretrex uses AAA batteries.

3-0 out of 5 stars New technology needed for PC interface
If the PC connection would be updated to USB (my computer does not even have a serial connection), they could even add the ability to use the USB power to recharge the Forerunner. That would be Really useful!

1-0 out of 5 stars Spare Parts
This is nothing more than a replacement cable for the serial cable that is already included with the Garmin Forerunner 201.You will only need it if you lose your existing cable. However, for the price they really should have included the additional charger that actually connects the unit to this cable. With your forerunner and this cable alone, there is still absolutely nothing you can do unless you have the charging base (there are two cables that connect your Garmin to your computer).

That means that this product is only useful for people who have lost one of the cables, but still have the other. What's more, it's an outdated serial connection, which means very slow transfers. The least they could do was offer a USB connection if they're going to sell this separately.

1-0 out of 5 stars It Comes with the Forerunner 201
This VERY expensive cable is already in the package if you purchased the Forerunner 201.You won't need this unless you somehow lost it.Damn, it is expensive! This is a cable for goodness sake! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty unnecessary
Why would you need this??

- the Garmin iQue 3600 Auto Navigation Kit will charge as well as this item and has the added advantage of allowing you to use the Garmin 3600 as it was meant to be used...as a hands free GPS navigation system.

1-0 out of 5 stars iQ3600 12 volt charger
This is the second 12 volt charger I've had. Both have blown fuses in my vehicle, then the units also blew something since they didn't work anymore. Garmin did send the second unit at no charge since its under warranty. I'm now calling for a third unit!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality adaptor
I bought this adaptor and found it makes a lot of noise when in use. So I asked for a replacement. The replacement does not make noise any more. But there is 10% chance it will blow your car's fuse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Package for the price
I am very happy with the Magellan MAP 330x GPS. I had purchased it because, for the price, it was better than any of the other brands. It has a good battery life (9-10 hours from 2 AAs depending on how often you use the light feature) , and comes with map software which is a must for this type of GPS. The features it has meet or surpass other products in its class. The only problem I have with it, is that in order to see any local streets you must be zoomed in pretty close, but you can't expect much more since the screen is only about 3"X2". I feel that its very accurate... With the map software I can see all of the rural streets around my home. Sometimes it takes a while for the unit to orient its self, but once it has gone through its cycle it stays locked on, even in my basement. I did my homework on this one, and I would recommend it over the other brands, unless they can come up with a better package... Though the others might have products in the same category, they don't package their GPS with the software and the data cable so they can ding you with the cost of buying it later. ... It would be worth your while to do some research before you buy though, so take the time to look around on the above web pages, and visit epinions.com to help you make a sound purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good unit
My review is based on a trial period of less than one month. I ended up returning the GPS to buy another of Magellan's models. In retrospect, after a year of use with the newer model, I believe the size of the MAP 330 makes it better suited for some uses, such as carrying it in your jeans pocket. With this unit, Magellan has recessed the power button so that it cannot be easily depressed as it is with newer models. On the downside, the screen and button size is larger with other Magellan models, which may be important to some individuals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Compared with Garmin eTrex Vista
I purchased Magellan MAP 330X two years ago. That one was working really fine. But because its design was not as cute as I would expect, I sold it off eBay one year ago. Then I was searching for a replacement one, and it was found to be Garmin eTrex Vista. So I purchased it and used it during the 2002 Christmas vacation in California. To my much disappointment, it is really quite inferior to MAP330. The only reason I bought it was it it looks cute, easy to fit my pocket. However, on technically side, there are many problems. After making painfully decision, I decide to sell it and buy back the MAP300 again.

First, Garmin's GPS does not come with the detailed city maps, which is sold separately for $99+. It is quite expensive. Magellan's city map comes with MAP330X. (Garmin's GPS is already sold higher than comparable Magellan's). Second, Vista's map on the screen is not floating. For example, if the street name is "Main St.", and the first two character "Ma" is happened to be cutoff on the left side, the screen only displays "in St.". Very bad, isn't it? MAP330X's text names are floating to fit in the screen. Third, very very bad, Vista is very slow and difficult to lock the satellite signals. And once it does lock, it is quite easy to get lost (see other reviews for any Magellan GPS). This is the main problem that makes me abandon it finally, even though I like its stylish design so much. Fourth, once it lost the satellite signals, it displays the message on the bottom of all screens and just will not go, which blocks the necessary information (such as elevator, distance, street name, etc.) that I will like to see even though the signal is off. Fifth, it is quite difficult to navigate the map to left, right, up or down. In MAP330X, you just move the cursor, using one hand only, can do it, whileas same functionality in Vista needs two steps and needs two hands. It is not likely to do it during driving. Sixth, although Vista outside design is quite cute, its button locations are very bad. It is very difficult to manipulate them using one hand during the driving. You may say it is not supposed to use it during driving. But using it during driving, so what, it is just a quite look on the screen, just like drinking an soda or eat a bite of McDonald. It does not cause any problem when using probably. Plus, it is only useful during the driving when one needs to figure out if he/she is in the right direction on highway, or if miss an exit, and how far it is needed to get the destination. Without the proper use of it with one hand, you bet how many people will be buying a GPS. Seventh, when Vista is first turned on, it locks the screen to scan the satellite frequencies (which is already quite long compared with MAP330X) and does not allow you to go to any other screen further. This is also very bad feature. Sometime I just want to see the map of last location, I don't really need to track the current location; or I just want to setup configurations, why should I have to wait the satellite signal? There're also other major issues such as not showing what's the version number of the firmware, how much memory is left, what kind of external map is loaded, etc.

In this deflationary world, I make purchase carefully on high-tech gadgets. I understand the prices will drop quickly. So if I do buy it, I really expect to own it and consider the money is discarded. If a company does not provide a good product, it cannot expect to sell it too many, because nowadays there're on-line auction and trading sites everywhere. If a customer does not like the product generally after using it, he/she will sell it, say, at eBay. Therefore, the used ones get circulated again and again in the secondary trading market, making the new ones difficult to be mass sold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Unit, Limited use in SouthAmerica
This is my second Magellan GPS (Map 315 before), I think it is an excellent unit, very useful for almost every situation, works good with your computer. Things that need some improvement: Software mapping in SouthAmerica (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador), free software for jpg mapping conversion to upload to unit. Maps for outside USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
This is an excellent product. I'm very impressed by it's capabilties.
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, the one minor inconvience is the battery cover. I believe the fault lies in the fact the springs in the battery cover are located on the same end, consequently one battery's negative end is postitioned against the spring, while the other battery's positive end (which is too small) is postioned against its spring. If they could move the positive terminal spring to the opposite side, it would result in much better electrical contact.
If you have trouble closing the battery cover, check the positive terminal against the spring(it has a tendency to move out of position while loading batteries).
Make sure both batteries are securely in position, and you can firmly close the battery cover. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Functional and Well-Built
I regularly carry my eTrex GPS from vehicle to vehicle and connect it to my laptop everyday for downloading waypoints and track information. This cable makes it easy to utilize my etrex regardless of the environment. Best of all, the cable is sturdily made and looks like it will last for many more trips. This is also the only cable that will allow you to both power your GPS and connect it to a computer while in a vehicle, as must if you plan on using mapping software in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars USB is Possible
As a certified Computer Technician, I bought a Etrex to connect to a PC i have mounted in my truck, used to play music and display navigational software on a lcd screen. I found out that the software (along with many others) support a connection to a gps device, allowing the software to track your location real time on a map. Very handy, I just set the destination, and it tells me where to go! This cable allows battery free operation, and I hate buying expensive batteries! Although I do agree the cable could be longer, it functions, thus its handy to have. I would like to comment on the usb remarks. I have not tried this yet, but there is a usb to serial adapter available for PC's in need of an extra serial port. Cheers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great but designed wierd
The way this cable should have been made is with the Y connection near the cigarette lighter adapter instead of near the GPS. If the gps is placed on the dashboard, you have a cable stretched across your passenger seat to the laptop which gets in the way but I have used this cable and it works well.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a Crazy World
It is crazy how over-priced this cable really is. It is crazy that I actually bought it. If you don't mind the price, this cable is well made. I finally upgraded the firmware of my Geko 201 with this cable. BTW, the bootleg version of this cable costs almost as much, and probably costs more after you add the shipping cost. See what a crazy world we live in?

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin PC Interface Cable
This item is an absolute must for operating your GPS unit out in the field when connected to a computer of some sort. Simply relying on the Garmin GPS's internal batteries leaves you with only an eight hour window of operation while if the unit is attached to an external power source one can expect unlimited usage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Does its job, what more could I ask for?!
I bought this with a Magellan sportrak pro GPS unit. I already knew about the connector being shared with the data port, but since I don't have a laptop, I didn't want to waste the extra money to get the dual cable.
This item does exactly what it is supposed to. It works great on long drives when I don't have to worry about draining the batteries down to a point where I can't use the GPS unit at the destination. Attaching and detaching the connector using the D-rings is a little more involved than something that can just be plugged into the GPS, but obviously, making the GPS submersible involved compromises like this. I can live with that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but limited
This power adapter does the job. It's neat because it can handle a wide range of voltage inputs. It has a small in-line power box that adjusts the input to fit the needs of the Meridian. The problem I had is that I bought it before realizing the power and the computer connection both use the same strange I/O connector. So if you use this adapter, you can't connect to your laptop. The solution is to buy the more expensive dual cable version that has both battery cord and serial cable attached.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, pays for itself!
I'm also a Geocacher, and I have to say this is a great product! I've been wasting money on rechargable batteries, but now I don't even have to worry about batteries at all. Good for long trips, too; because you don't even have to have batteries at all. A must-have for anyone owning a Meridian GPSr!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
I own a Map 330 Magellan GPS and I have to say that this product is a must for any Geocacher. The only problem with my unit is that it drains a substantial amount of power in a short matter of time. With the power cable and cigarette adapter I can trace a geocache from the moment I get into my vehicle without having to worry about battery life while I am in the car! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Try to find a port
I own a Sony VAIO computer. In the computer, there are no ports to put in this cord. Ended up buying something for [money] to convert it to a USB connection. Then, I couldn't find a program that would be able to send and receive data to my eTrex GPS via a USB port. Was definitely a hassle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excelent for Portables.
The cable doesn't come with any software, but is great for upgrading the software on your eTrek(avilable from Garmin's website) You will need a GPS compatible mapping program to get the full advantage. The cable connects very securly to the GPS, and is plenty long enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but a cable is necessary
This little cable is very, very overpriced, but unfortunately, for those of you that own the original eTrex or any eTrex model with no cable, you'll want to own this or an equivalent so you can download the latest updates to your GPS receiver from garmin and load them onto the unit. And you want this ability because Garmin does a good job of fixing bugs and adding new little software features. But if you can't build your own cable, then you should grab one of these...

2-0 out of 5 stars Good quality, but get the data+power cable...
The quality of this cable is fine, but it doesn't give you access to the power pins that are in the Garmin interface. Get the cable that does power and data instead... or if you're a hardware geek, then make your own with the stuff from purple open projects (pfranc.com) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Yep, It's A Cable
What can I say, it's a cable and it does the job.

The only question I have is why *only* the cigarette lighter adapter? Very few cars (I know there must be *some* out there) have CD-ROM capable computers installed in them and hard as I may try, my car won't make it up the 2 flights of stairs (without damaging the banister or carpet) to get to my home office.

The only way I could use both power and data connectors at home was by purchasing a 3rd party 110v to 12v adapter to use with household current. It's a cheesy and unattractive solution to Magellan's lack of foresight.

Other than having to explain to everyone that Magellan's too cheap to provide an adapter of their own, the cable works fine.

I use a swivel mount as a desk cradle and so the cable connector snaps onto the back of the mount removing the need to mess with the ridiculously small connector screw (guess their designers all have extremely thin and dexterous fingers -- not to mention 12v power sources built into their homes). The swivel mount is excellent.

The cable is fine -- really -- and, after all, since the connectors are proprietary you have no other option!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great! A must-have accessory for the Magellan
I use this cable in conjuncton with a 310 to track vehicle movement, send email, and support emergency services using a system called APRS. I wore out the first cable after several years of use/abuse. The cable allows me to just power the GPS, update the flash ROM/BIOS within the unit, and/or connect it to a laptop or transmitting device. The mount has two small holes where I placed small suction cups for EZ window mounting in any vehicle. The mapping programs work very well, esp if you have a sound card with voice announcements! :-)

The 310/315/320 series were on the street before USB was stable. They are not small, fixed antenna only, and are power hungry. USB and smaller units are available, with WAAS, for under $100 bucks (TN 200) if you really need USB. You don't need speed as the GPS messages are sent at 4800 baud without data loss or overrun, 9600 baud preferred. If you don't have a serial port, then this is not the GPS unit for you, and never will be. Get the proper unit for the job. There is a reason these are still popular. Period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it.
Having data and power in the same cable is VERY useful. Considering the advances in cabling, however, I would think that having ONLY a DB-9 serial data cable is a limitation. For example, I'm now looking for an adaptor from the DB-9 to USB. That being said, it's a very useful connector, and it DOES work with the SporTrak Pro, not just the Meridian. A data cable is included with the SporTrak Pro, but not an external power cable. There is a less expensive power cable, but if you want to have both power and data, this is the only way to go, since there's only one connection on the GPSR. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars works like a charm
If you use your Mag with a laptop in the car (wardriving anyone?) then this cable is well worth the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars a horrible, but completely necessary cable
this cable sucks but it's all you've got.

it's a pain to attach (you have to press it against the back of the receiver while trying to screw it on) and it's a serial cable. gawd forbid, you don't have a serial port.

HOWEVER, without it, you can't attach your Magellan GPS to your computer. and if you can't do that, you're missing out on the best parts of the receiver. manage your waypoints, create routes, upload topo or street maps ... there's a world of stuff you can do only with your PC.

as for the serial connection, well, there are serial to USB adapters. they aren't always easy to configure but with a little work you can make it happen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't fit the Magellan Meridian in Car Bracket
Though Amazon offers this item at a discount with the Meridian GPS, it is the wrong model. It is designed for the GPS 315/320 and does not fit the Meridian when mounted in the Meridian Vehicle Mounting Bracket. The correct one (I presume) is labelled "Magellan Meridian PC Data Cable with Cigarette Lighter Adapter", part number 730345.

5-0 out of 5 stars But what if you don't have a serial port??
This is an excellent product but so far Magellan has ignored the fact that new computers don't necessarily have a serial port that will connect to this cable.

So to make this work you will need to buy an IOGear USB to serial port adapter cable and edit the com ports speed settings in the win.ini file to get faster transfers speeds for your map data. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Protect the Pins
I love using this cable with a laptop and a street atlas program to know exactly where I am and how far it is to the next turn. But be careful with the cable when not connected to the GPS. I bent a pin while pulling it out of my backpack and it eventually broke off. I had to buy a new one. I'm now making a cover to protect the pins during storage. ... Read more
