Great device for a great price!
The iPaq hx2415 is my second PDA.It is replacing my slower, but still fully functional Compaq iPaq 3635, one of the original iPaqs.I loved it and used it daily for everything from productivity to entertainment.My review is going to be more of a comparison between the two devices.

Expansion/Memory Cards:
The hx2415 is awesome!It's everything I had in the 3635 and so much more.Because my 3635 did not have any built-in expansion card slots, I had the compact flash expansion sleeve, which added bulk and took away from the slim, ergonomic style.In searching for a new PDA, one of my main requirements is that it would have to take compact flash cards natively, without an attachment.There are others on the market, however, I never had any problems out of my Compaq so I wanted to stick with the HP/Compaq brand.Not only does the hx2415 take the compact flash, it also takes the secure digital (SD) cards as well!Great job on providing multiple expansion slots HP.

Display:
I have been doing research and looking at the newer PDAs for about six months.The vast improvement in the displays just blew my 3635 out of the water.The colors are brighter, sharper and much more crisp on the hx2415 and the newer PDAs.Without a doubt, it was much easier on the eyes, even with the screen protector that I put on, right out of the box.

Battery:
I bought my 3635 new in the summer of 2001.I replaced the battery myself with a high-capacity battery.The original was down to about 20 minutes of good usage per full charge!:(After the new battery, I could go for a week and a half with more than my normal daily usage and the backlight on!Having said that, the standard battery of the hx2415 doesn't compare, which is why I'm getting the high-capacity battery for it as well.I love the fact that it is removable and I don't need any tools to replace it.

Design:
When the iPaq was first introduced, it's radical style was on the cutting edge.One of the main reasons I bought it is because it was unlike any other PDA at the time.It made all the Palm devices look like standard calculators.I loved the placement and functions of the buttons.They were all right where they needed to be.On the hx2415, it's even better because the buttons are designed so that it is not as easy to accidentally press one of the buttons, especially the voice recorder.

Networking:
Aside from infrared on the 3635, in order to do any type of networking with my iPaq, I needed to get add-on cards, which I didn't want to do.The hx2415 takes care of all of your networking needs - from infrared, to Wi-Fi, to Bluetooth.It has it all.

Applications:
HP has included great applications that I found were very easy to use.I guess being a previous owner of an iPaq helped too.But it won't be a problem for those just buying their first PDA either.

Sound:
This is probably the only thing that I wish would have been better on the hx2415.The sound is not what I'm used to on my 3635.The speaker was a lot bigger and produced a much louder sound.I very rarely had the volume maxed on it.With the hx2415, the volume is all the way up - all the time.

Overall I am smitten with my new iPaq.I paid over $500 for my 3635 brand new (with cradle, charger, case, and expansion sleeve).I found this hx2415 for $370.00.What a deal!I couldn't be happier.

One thing I would like to mention, which isn't a problem with the iPaq as much as it is a problem with the PocketPC interface.I recommend you get a third-party management utility, such as Wisbar.It makes using the iPaq so much easier and fun.One thing I dislike (and probably most PPC users do as well) is that when you open an application, such as Pocket Word, there is an 'X' button to close the application.However, the 'X' button is more like a 'Minimize' button because the program is still active.You have to navigate through the settings control panel and close it from the running programs in the Memory task panel.So much of a hassle.But not with Wisbar.You'll be glad you did!

I'm sure I'm leaving some other great features out, but these are what really drove me to buy the hx2415.Hope it helps you in your search!

Great PDA. Sync perfectly with my home and office computer.
I bought this last week to replace a broken Handspring Visor Prism. This the the first pocket pc I have bought. I wanted to try what seemed like a more versital OS. Im back with GRADES for HP customer support on my 2215
150.00 dollars what it cost me to get my ipaq back in a working manner , indeed with some perks and improvements...read my previous post on the issues that led me to send my machine back..(mositure/condensation on the lcd) BY FAR a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

lets face it, things break it is inevitable. but dont believe the hype. The HP warranty from what many other people post here across different models of IPAQ can be summed up in 1 sentence.

"the warranty is simply an insurance plan in which repair costs will be lower than getting your item fixed out of its warranty"

as i found out my same issue would have run me $250 & change out of warranty , however my fix was not included in the warranty and mercifully was given a reduced rate because i am in warranty..its a bit of rhetoric nonsense but this is the corporate engine of HP.com...now that we got this KUNG FU style of chess playing here are my grades

lets face it we are all out to make money and to shell out as little as possible!! hp is not immune the the capitalist economy we are in. stuff breaks because $--it happens, and why not make a buck or 2 out of your inconsiderateness. Warranty is a joke, to get a repair really free of charge it has to fall on the floor a certain way..or have not appeared abused.. there are plusses & minuses to this ...i was not satisfied with the handling of my unit not covered as part of warranty. I didnt purposely put moisture on the LCD. if i dropped it or scratched it i wouldnt have a beef, however i stand with the poor mark for HP warranty.

they dont get an A because they OUTSOURCE...i am a minority myself I am hispanic so no offense to anyone here. but with this GLOBAL effort alot of the computer comapnies now have chains of tech support in INDIA. and trust me i could not get a straight answer unless I spoke to someone in the US...once speaking to a rep in USA status & details & next steps were clearly given to me in a timely manner. I noticed the outsource reps still seem to be figuring out their screens on dropdown menus as to what to say next to a caller I was on hold alot and this was unacceptable.

this is the area you will have to deal with WHEN your item falls out of warranty and customer support will transfer you here, as there is no further discussion on your case, they need money and thats it. I felt in my talk with them i felt like I was talking to a collection agency, to which the rep i spoke to seemed a bit miffed as to me asking
"just what was wrong with my unit, what was the fix?"
i may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to repair in scientific terms but anyone can explain SIMPLY what was wrong with a product and what could fix it..if im shelling out my hard earned money..you will humor me and tell me what i wanna hear!!
after all i said to the lady i spoke to

"it isnt so wrong of me to ask what was wrong with my item? Surely you yourself dont go shopping and just stuff items in your shopping bag, you are gonna look at what your taking off the shelf? right? let alone the bill that your spending money on the items on right? or are you just gonna fork out your cash with no questions not caring what its amounted to and what you have bought?"

a cut & dry collections team here made this part of the repair process by far the worst ive had to deal with. Reminds me of a traffic cop giving you a ticket, heartless & un speakable.

this is their strong area!! and made all other suttleties bearable..Wednesday may 26th received box to mail the ipaq back for repair...after having called Tuesday 5/25 to lodge my trouble report.
Box picked up on 5/27 Thursday...and had it not been for the Memorial Day Weekend it may have come back sooner..the PPC was back in my posession on wednesday 6/2..on tuesday 6/1 is when i got everything squared away as to fixes & non warranty & asking me for credit card info..

more plusses.. ther was a ROM upgrade for my IPAQ which they put on it.. 1.10 is the rom for 2200 series it was upgraded to from 1.00...and its on HP's website FYI for download..by placing this rom on your unit it requires HARD reset & such ive done it for some of my colleagues in the office upgrading from PPC 2002 to 2003 on different HP models. They replaced the SHIELD...there were some minor NICKS & cuts from having placed screen shields on my PPC prior, all to which are GONE...they gave me a new shield scratch free.

Hp Ipaq does it again!
As a Sophomore student in college i had my share of PDA's and after trouble times dealing with my Toshiba and way out-dated Palm Pilot, i finally made the upgrade to the Ipaq 2215. First of all, the rubber grips is a nice addition from the accident waiting to happen Ipaq 39**, it also gives a nice, classy look to the interface. Second, the size is a welcome since in the earlier models they were big & bulky without mentioning the additional CF sleeve added.The memory is nothing speculator (64MB Ram & 32MB ROM), so if you plan on adding 3rd party software, be prepared to cough up extra cash for a SD or CF card.The bluetooth is a nice welcome, but in a campus where wi-fi is connected all over, does little unless i have to use my friend Ecrisson cell phone to connect for web browsing.Ladies & Gentlemen, who doesn's love how Hp once again step over their competition with the SD & CF slot already designed into the 2215.This is nothing new, but the newer models coming out on the Toshiba e405 and other HP ipaqs doesn't include both slots, another reason to shell out the cash for it. The 2215 model is very sleek and rounded perfect for a nice look to those non-pda users who often peek to see what you are doing. I love the 3.5 screen, which project the clearest and brightest screen around in the market. This a very nice PDA except sometimes the screen will freeze and crash you can lose everything, unless you save your files on a SD or CF memory card. Besides that, this is the perfect PDA to buy, until a upgrade is put out in the market.
Oh yeah, do yourself a favor and spend the $70-75 dollars 2-3yr warrant, because believe you are going to need it, if you use your PDA for everyday use like i do.

HP IPAQ 2215
I have had an iPAQ 2215 for just under a year. I did a lot of work, asked a lot of questions before buying. It was in my price range, plus I added a SD card because my camera also uses a SD card. The case the comes with it is nice but replace it with a sturdier one to protect screen and features that fit your lifestyle (mine is a clipon to belt or waist. The only thing that I am thinking of adding is a foldable/protable keyboard for long documents. It's great

All good - Display lacks a little,
I like the features and the small footprint. Everything works great. The one small complaint is with the display... it seems to be less bright than say the 19xx or the 55xx models. I'm not sure if its a power issue since the 21xx series has only a 900 mAh Lithium-lon battery and they needed to take away from the display to conserve the battery.
But overall a nice unit.

Much Better Than The HP iPaq 2215
On April 4th of 2005 our house was flooded and a cleaning crew came in to clean it up. One day my HP iPAQ 2215 was on my desk, the next it was gone. So, I knew two things, someone had my handheld, and I needed a new one, so two weeks of searching turned up the HP iPAQ hx2755. I got the hx2755 a few days ago and I really like it. The biometric fingerprint reader is a nice addition and the wraparound rubber grip is an added touch. I like the size of it and the VGA screen.

There are some things I am troubled with, though. It has no Nevo! I loved Nevo on my 2215. HP should really have added that. But that's really all the problem I have with it.

The HP iPAQ hx2755 is great for business or oriented people. . . Or 9th graders, like me, who have $550 and would rather spend it on technology than whatever their classmates are spending it on.

The issue mentioned in the previous review regarding the conflict between calligrapher 7.4 and windows mobile 2003 SE appears not to be an issue on my machine, which I have had for about 10 days now.The system is completely stable.The crash experienced by the previous reviewer could only be due to other software conflicts.

And yes the machine rocks!Very happy right now.

One secure powerhouse!
I just got the hx2755 a couple of days ago.Overall, I really like the PDA.It fits in your hand better than the 2200 that is replaces thanks to the wraparound rubber grip.The buttons are all in the same place that they were on the 2200 but look better on this model.The screen is big, bright and clear for a QVGA.As for performance, it rocks!I can surf the net faster via wi-fi faster than my old pentium II laptop can on the LAN.I have placed all the installed programs I have in the extra 128meg nonvolatile storage, so I don't have to worry about resetting the thing up if it crashes (more on crashes latter.) It's great for previewing images on a compact flash or SD card and I've even watched a couple of movie clips on it.The bluetooth and wi-fi have great range for a unit this size and were easy to set up.And of course, there's the security features.I set it up to lock when turned off. To unlock, all I have to do is swipe a finger. The fingerprint recognition is great on this unit and far more secure than the 4 digit "pin" I was forced to use to save time on my old 2200.Additionally, for the true PDA paranoid like myself, it has a automatic backup that can be configured to back up the entire devise if the battery gets too low.I can't count the number of times I lost all my data on the 2200 when I forgot to bring a spare battery on a weekend trip.

Now for the down side.It did crash several times and I had to do a complete reset.I finally traced it down to the new Windows Mobile 2003 SE and Calligrapher 7.4, they just won't play nice!Pity, Calligrapher is a great program, but once I removed it, the unit stopped freezing up.Additionally, you have to remember to turn the wi-fi off when you turn the hx2755 off or it will "wake" periodically and run down the battery.The included Microsoft Internet Explorer is better in the SE version but still isn't compatible with many secure sites like Wells Fargo and does sometimes close unexpectedly.Once again, Microsoft has given us a beta version as a "final" product.And last, the hx2755 is so new there are few dedicated accessories available.

Overall, if you don't need aVGA screen the HP hx2755 has more than enough features built in with room to grow.It's speedy and compact with plenty of security features designed for people who need their information to stay private. ... Read more

The iPAQ 1945 - A Pocket PC Approaching Perfection
The iPAQ 1945, also sold as the iPAQ 1940, is the first in a line of planned successors to the iPAQ 1910. HP has addressed many of the concerns that 1910 users had, namely that the 1910 was too slow and lacked hardware expansion options. The 1945 is powered by a new 266MHz processor from Samsung which rivals, and sometimes surpasses, the usable speed of many XScale chips from Intel. Other features of the iPAQ 1945 include 64MB of RAM (56MB of which are user accessible), a crisp, bright transflective color screen, onboard Bluetooth wireless, and a Secure Digital slot which can use SD flash memory cards and SDIO peripherals such as 802.11b WLAN cards.

Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC replaced Pocket PC 2002 as the most current Pocket PC OS in June 2003 and comes installed on the 1945. While the version of Windows Mobile 2003 pre-installed on the iPAQ lacks a few minor applications (such as Microsoft Reader), each can be downloaded for free. Because HP left the choice to the end-user, the iPAQ File Store - unused space on the ROM - has over 13MB free for software, files, etc.

As I mentioned before, the Samsung processor keeps the 1945 moving along very well. Having recently used an iPAQ 5450 (400Mhz PXA250 XScale), a Toshiba e755 (400MHz PXA255 XScale) and a Toshiba e355 (300MHz PXA255 XScale), I can say that, from a casual use point-of-view, the iPAQ 1945 surpasses the speed of the iPAQ 5450 and Toshiba e355 and feels basically on level with the Toshiba e755. One of the touted benefits of the Samsung processor is long battery life, and while I didn't get the eight hours that HP suggested I might, I got almost seven hours use out of the 1945 with the backlight on its lowest setting before I had to recharge; a very good result.

There is only one real drawback to the iPAQ 1945, as I see it, and it's relatively minor and completely fixable: the 1945 ships with only a USB Sync cable, not a cradle. While some might actually prefer this, I miss not having a cradle to rest the iPAQ in while it's not in use. The good news here is that there is a cradle available (the same cradle that works with the iPAQ 1910), and you can purchase if you want it.

All-in-all, the iPAQ 1945 is an amazing addition to the Pocket PC family. If you like small, light PDAs with oomph, the 1945 might be right up your alley.

First time PPC user
I bought the HP Ipaq 1945 2 weeks ago and think it's an excellent product. No problem syncronising with Outlook, Word, and Excel, pretty fast. The bluetooth feature is a little bit tricky when setting up, but once you find out how, the bluetooth synchronisations are excellent.
The only drawbacks are: it does not bring a protective case, you have to get your own covers for the lcd screen and the battery lasts about 4 hours in continuos operation.
If you are looking for a simple to use device and use your standard outlook features this device is for you. It's thin and light, simple to carry around and all the info you need is right in your hand.

More drawbacks than advantages
The iPaq 1945, with "Mobile Windows 2003," is an updated version of the landmark 1910 model. The 1910 model was significant in the history of Pocket PCs because it was small and stylish, a first in the PPC world. Unfortunately, the cool factor of the 1910 wore off pretty quickly; I initially loved my 1910 and gave it 5 stars. After two weeks I started getting frequent crashes, and the unit was very slippery and quite uncomfortable to hold, and HP didn't even both to include a case!
The 1945 introduced some new additions, but has one big huge drawback: it uses a Korean-made Sumsung CPU, which implements the ARM architecture at a low speed and also a low cost (to HP, that is). The CPU is reported to generate more heat than Intel offerings, and personally I don't trust a company that makes DVD players that don't last more than 6 months. Anyway, the 1945 is not even that cheap. A faster and better built Zire 71 with more features is cheaper, and since Palm can do videos and music these days, the incentive to get such a half-baked product like the 1945 is pretty small.

Also, even though 64MB of RAM is included, you can still only access about 46MB of it. In my 1910 experience this is actually adequate, unless you want to install Microsoft Reader, Pocket Streets, Money, and other software. PPC software titles tend to be huge (think "bloatware"), so I think going forward if you are buying a PPC, be sure to get at least 64MB of *useable* RAM. Check out Toshiba's e750/e755 offering, which as 96MB of RAM, 32 of which is non-versatile, meaning the content stays on even when the battery completely dies. (The e75x also has wi-fi.)

In terms of additions, the 1945 offers Bluetooth -- but nobody I know uses BT so most of you potential buyers would be paying for something you'll never use (kinda like the mic feature on all the PPCs I've owned...) -- and also SDIO compatibility, something sorely missing in the 1910. A few manufacturers including Toshiba, Sandisk, Lexar, etc. are coming out with SD wi-fi cards (finally), so at least the 1945 can potentially use them. BUT... wi-fi is a battery killer, and the 1945 uses a small-capacity battery. My prediction is on a full charge and at level 2 brightness (out of 5), if you have the wi-fi on, the 1945 won't last for more than 30 minutes. Also note that you cannot use a wi-fi card and SD memory expansion at the same time as the 1945 only has one slot. So a few extra bucks, you'd be much, much better off with a Toshiba e75x model, which has both SD and CompactFlash expansion slots (and built-in 802.11b wi-fi).

While the 1945 is still stylish and kind of "cool," you must keep in mind that its slippery metal surface makes it hard to hold or take out of the case. The application buttons are also stiff. I test-drove a 1945 in a local computer store and was totally unimpressed since none of the complaints I had was addressed at all, including the small and awkward stylus.

Even though I still use my 1910 as my primary PDA, I'm looking to replace it completely (maybe with a Palm, after all these years?), both as a result of disatisfaction with the hardware and some frustrations over the software (no "tap-and-write" calendar appointments, all-too-frequent problems with ActiveSync, constant soft resets, etc, etc.). So my finally thought is, get a Palm if you want something simple and reliable, and if you want a PPC, stay away from this underpowered, ergonomically incorrect 1945 and get a Toshiba e755 instead.

$300 paper weight!
My husband bought this for me for my birthday in January. I am a pharmacy student and it comes in so handy when I work in a pharmacy. I call it my other brain. The other day while I was working at a pharmacy, it fell from the counter to the floor. It hit a rubber matted floor. The LCM (I think that is what it is called)is now broke. It looks as though liquid is oozing from the top corner. Ever store I have taken it to says it is cheaper to replace the whole unit. I called HP they said it will be 199.99 to replace plus shipping a labor. What a joke. I will buying a new one, just not an HP. If one little fall from a counter can cause such damage, it is not worth it. I am very disappointed in this product. Buyer Beware!

Satisfied But Confused
Beautiful little machine. In the first two weeks of use, have had one synchronization glitch -- couldn't delete a web page because of a supposed file-sharing error -- but it was resolved with a soft reset. Biggest concern so far: I have dozens of questions (just one example: what is "automatic gain control"?) that aren't answered either in user's manual or on-board Help files. Guess I'll have to get them answered through a Google search. You'll need to buy a case and one thought on this: Think twice before you buy (or better yet, try it out somewhere) the Rhinoskin aluminum case. It's VERY difficult to use the PDA while it is in this case with the front open. There's simply no way to comfortably and securely get a grip on the case because the front doesn't fold back. I sent mine back and bought Rhinoskin's leather case for IPAQ 1900 Series PDAs(00366; it's hard to find on Amazon because there are few links from the IPAQ PDA pages). This case -- because the front folds back behind the PDA -- solved the problem. Smallest full featured iPAQ yet!
If you've been looking for a thin and compact iPAQ with all the essentials including wi-fi and bluetooth, and you don't need a compactflash slot, then this is it. I was online thru my wifi network at home within seconds, almost configures itself. I have a Netgear 802.11g/b system and have easily gone anywhere inside my home as well as outside, approx 50' with no problem at all. I thought this model was the "ultimate" iPAQ until I tried my son's 4355, exactly the same plus integrated "thumb keyboard", and I was surprised by this because I have large fingers. The 4355 is slightly thicker, .1", and less than 1" longer with the keyboard and it's a better design than a Sony Clie because the keys are both larger and better spaced. However if your bottom line is smaller is better then you can't go wrong with the 4155. The only reason it doesn't rate 5 stars is battery life, if hp had used the same battery as used in the 4355 I would have given it 5! Buy an in car charger, problem solved.

A Pocket PC that finally works
I've tried older Palm products and Pocket PC's in the past but nothing was worth it for me to carry around. But I've finally found something that works. The HP Ipaq 4155 is great. I really needed a PDA/pocket PC but didn't know what to get. I wanted wireless and like the windows interface. I liked the idea pocket word and excel and don't like graffiti. This was a bit pricey but I took a gamble and am happy I did!!!

It has been super easy to use and understand. Syncing is a cinch with Outlook. The software that is included is quite handy and there is a lot of other auto-syncing software that is available for free that gives you daily news, movie reviews, maps etc. It's almost like being online.

I have had no stalls or any problems that I can list. The wireless networking connected to my Linksys router without a single complication. And surfing the web works about as well as I expected. Pages load but you have to scroll around to see everything so I can find what I want but it's not as easy as a realy computer obviously. I have yet to try bluetooth. The screen and interface are great. It includes an extra stylus which is nice. All in all this has been everything I hoped for so far. If you're in the market for a Pocket PC and want features such as bluetooth and wireless networking then don't hesitate to get this one!!!

The LCD cracks by itself!
The LCD cracked while in my pocket with no drop or hit!
Sent the unit to HP and after bouncing around their customer service, I was charged $190 for the repair. Browsing the internet (unsuccessfully trying to find a cheaper repair option) I found several similar complains. It seems like the IPAQ4155 has a serious quality problem that costs 50% of the value of a new unit to fix. I am selling my unit as soon as it comes back from repair and will never by an IPAQ anymore!

The problem isn't the PDA, it's Hewlett-Packard warranty!
I bought a pocket pc ipaq and it was very nice, but just for one year...two months after the warranty ended, the product failed to never work again. I sent it to the service, but after one month! they gave it back to me and told me that it is not possible to repair it, or the cost will be more expensive than buying a new one. So I spoke with Hewlett-Packard, and they assigned my case to a "customer advocate", but that person is a real HP advocate who told me "HP products doesn't fail.."??
So I have a nice US$700 pocket pc that doesn't work. Next time I will find a minimum 3-years warranty.

It's packed with features, but packed with bugs
I've been on the PDA scene for a while now, and bought a Palm IIIe. It was great; reliable, long battery life, and stylish.

I then moved to the iPaq 3870. It was brilliant; the bluetooth let me connect to my phone to get Internet and Email on the move. It was great, again; reliable, long(ish) battery life, and stylish.

Then, I decided to upgrade to the h4150, to take advantage of the built-in wireless and its clear, crisp screen. As I use satellite navigation a lot, I needed a screen I could see in my car at all times.

This, I got, and the navigation works a treat. Also, the wireless is intuitive (compared to PPC 2002's offering), but not perfect. Synchronisation is frought with problems; sometimes I end up synchronising my PDA's contents entirely, even though I've only changed someone's phone number, or adjusted a calendar date.

Sometimes the unit won't synchronise without a reset.

On the note of reliability, this unit seems to require rebooting a lot more often than its predecessor. If bluetooth doesn't work ... reset. If wireless doesn't work ... reset. If synchronising doesn't work ... reset. See a pattern emerging?

If you buy this unit, and you want to keep this unit, you MUST buy a protective case with it. The one that comes with it is alright, but it's not very protective. I've since cracked the screen and the touch-screen is basically useless now, and it'll apparently cost me £70-£100 ($120-$180) to repair, which I'm not too happy about.

The unit is great, but buggy. If you want a feature-packed, thin, stylish PDA, then get this. If you want a reliable PDA with long battery life, look elsewhere. ... Read more

Pretty nice unit if you're willing to pay.
If price was a factor, this might be a 3-star review. I'm reviewing it assuming price is not an issue and you are willing to pay for the model.

Positives:

* Comes with Pocket PC 2003 (Windows Mobile 2003), which has worked out some of the bugs of PPC2002, so I understand. Seems a pretty stable OS.
* 128 MB is just the best (for now!). This is great if you love to install tons of stuff on the unit.
* With the 48MB of ROM and the OS, there is about 17MB left over for Ipaq file store. Another bonus in space.
* Wifi is nearly perfect. Picks up access points without a hitch. Only minor problem might be that it's "too" excited sometimes and forgets that a certain access point is no longer around, so you have to manually remove it from the list.
* Internet apps pretty good: Pocket IE, Messenger, W Media
* Also easily used 3rd party software to browse my network and play tunes off another computer.
* Syncs over wifi. This is so great!
* Easy syncing with outlook, of course. Syncs IE favorites, too.
* Unit ships with a higher capacity battery than the others (1250 vs. 900 mAh)
* Fingerprint reader is faster than entering a PIN or a password. Also many security possibilities (i.e. fingerprint OR pin, fingerprint AND pin, etc.)
* Voice recorder is handy.

Negatives:

* Price / Value ratio is fairly high. It seems that you could have a comparable unit with the 2215, a wireless card and some extra ram for about $100 cheaper.
* The microphone/headphone jack is not flush with the bottom of the unit, but inset (see angle pic). Some of my headphone jacks sleeves are too fat to push the plug in all the way. This is a big design flaw.
* With all the stuff it's got, it is on the heavier side of the PDA weight spectrum.
* Big processor and battery means it gets very warm!
* It'd be nice if printing over a network was a possibility. Can't seem to be able to do this.
* IE is somewhat boiled down. No easy way to save a picture on a webpage like the desktop version of IE.
* Charging with USB is possible, however the unit seems to wake up and want to sync even though I set syncing to manual. Doesn't go back asleep and won't USB charge while on.

No comment:

* Haven't been able to test bluetooth for lack of other devices carrying this technology.
* Haven't used SD slot yet.
* Haven't used the ipaq expansion pack, but this apparently allows it do do oh so much more! :)

I would like to comment on reviewers who claim that the technical support is junk along with the device's reliability. May I point out that it is Microsoft's operating system, which is to be expected as no operating system is perfect. The iPAQ's hardware has nothing to do with how many times a reset is needed, since it has not only more ram, but a faster processor than most other pda's currently on the market. As for the technical support, I have had two iPAQ's and always received the same friendly and careless help needed to fix my problems straight away. Here's a recent example of how HP's support works.

1. Problem occurs.
2. Call to HP, they check warranty (lasts a year).
3. They send you an empty box, shipping and parts replacement, 100% free.
4. Ship it out next day.
5. Repair begins and ends in under an hour.
6. You receive an email confirming depature and repair success.
7. You receive the iPAQ back, only having it leave your side for less than 3 days.

If that's not service, then I don't know what is. I believe that many people are rude, arrogant, and are ignorant to their mistakes. I told the support technicians that I had dropped it and they said no problem, and replaced the screen, usb host connector, and battery all free of charge. Hope this helps your buying decision.

EDIT Finish -

In comparison to newer-age pda's including the Toshiba e805, the Asus MyPal, and the new Dell Axim, I hope you will regard my post only within HP and Compaq's products. This particular iPAQ is a giant leap from my Compaq iPAQ 3835, gone are the days of cradle synchronizing and wired connections. With Bluetooth and wi-fi I can synchronize and receiving data virtually anywhere.

A few reasons to avoid buying this:
- it is not a good first pda, as some features require proficient computer knowledge
- it is not worth buying unless you plan on using all features, including the finger print scan, otherwise go with the cheaper 4100 series iPAQs.

A few reasons to avoid buying another:
- is an 'upgradable' iPAQ, which means all previous software, cords/connections, sleeves (jackets), styli, and cases will work with this iPAQ.
- has wi-fi and bluetooth built in, along with 128megs sd ram, and 48 megs rom, gives you extra storage space.
- speedy processor and an sdio slot.

I believe this is the current best option for anyone wanting a powerful handheld machine. With the largest array of expansion abilities and wireless capabilities, it is the smartest choice you can make.

Disappointed
Great while it works. Mine died after 9 months of casual use. I'm not looking forward to dealing with warranty repairs.

This is a great Pocket PC if you can afford it.
I really like this Ipaq. I've had a 3835,3955,2215 and now this. This Ipaq really rocks.The integrated wifi and bluetooth makes surfing the net very easy. Even with the zippy 2215, I had trouble getting wifi due to a very obstinate wifi sd card. There's something to be said for having integrated wifi. Not just that but the 128 mb really makes a difference. I no longer find myself checking the memory setting to see which program needs to go on sd storage. Speed is nice and the color display is beautiful. Battery life could be better and of course it would be nice to have a compact flash but I'm pretty happy with the product.

Great features, HORRIBLE reliability
I am currently waiting for my second ipaq to be repaired, I just sent it in to HP. THe first was DOA, this one died within 6 months of getting it. When it works, and dosent need to be reset it is a great product, but generally I have to reset the device at least once a day and I am curious how often I will have to replace the unit all together. ... Deliberated and compared forever-finally committed!
I forever shopped for a pocket PC. Never owned a palm, all I knew was that I wanted a color pocket PC. The price originally won me over compared against the IPAQ. However, with the advent of the HP IPAQ 1910 at [amount], the same price of the AXIM after rebate, I was torn. The IPAQ is incredibly small and light and has a slightly larger screen. However the process is half of the Dell and the battery life is not great from what I have read. I realize the Dell in larger in size, but I really had nothing to compare it to. The HP is so small that I am sure I would drop it. The HP also has less with it. For roughly the same price, the Dell is fully loaded with software, comes with a case, and includes a very slick and modern docking station. I even bought the extra battery just in case but that ended up being a waste money since battery life is so good!

I am very happy with this product as a new user. Overall design, price and performance cannot be beat. Enjoy!

The Best Pocket PC so far
I've owned iPaqs (3670, 3850) and Jornadas (690, 720 and 2 568) and I've never been as satisfied with a device as I am with my Axim, and for it's price, you can't find a better deal, it doesn't have the Wireless system integrated as the new iPaqs but it's got 2 slots so you can buy a wireless CF card for $... dollars and still have the MMC/SD slot for memory, and still save more than $... against the new Ipaq. The screen is great, with the other devices dust din't take more that 2 days to get into the display and that was annoying because you can't remove it, with this device that doesn't happen. The only problem I see it, is the missing of a cover to protect the screen, anyway you can buy a Aluminum case instead of leather and keep it 100% safe. So overall it's the best Pocket PC in the market, it's a Dell.

Best pocket PC for the price
This is a great pocket PC. I am not a hard core techie like my husband and I find it easy to use. It synches with outlook, which was key for me. Also, there is plenty of good software to download for it. I like Avant-go and e-wallet. The buttons are programmable so you can use your downloaded software with ease. For example, my home button now simply brings me the news. I do reccommend getting more memory if you want to store photos or video clips, etc...

Buggy
The Axim has a bug that even Dell customer support will grudgingly confirm. Sometimes the unit will stay on after you power it off and slowly drain down the battery. After a few times of this, the reserve battery drains as well, and POOF! no more data.

happens to me on my Axim. No software fix yet.

Disappointing Dell
The Handheld worked well while I had it on the charger (not the cradle) every day but I have had numerous problems with battery life. The back-up batteries have also run down rapidly and I am really sick of having to re-enter my data. Also the cradle charger doesn't work! I wrote to Dell Australia via their web site but have had no response, and I was out of warranty when these problems started appearing. Perfect for the price
I couldn't help but notice all the complaints about battery life in the reviews here. 24-30 hours while the unit was turned OFF? I don't think so. I've had this unit off the charger for days, and kept a decent charge. Granted, if you leave it on, it drains the battery in several hours, but any backlit PDA does that.

Good screen, good features, VERY thin and light, and better input methods and syncing than any Palm. Having the choice of transcriber, block input (i.e., Graffiti), character recognition, and keyboard for different situations is great.

Pocket Word and Excel are included, as is Reader (load in a few books - it's great for boring staff meetings or waiting in line at the store). Programs like Notes, Tasks, and Calendar all have better functionality than their Palm counterparts.

And these days, you just can't beat the price. Well, that's not true. Yes you can, with Dell's new PDAs. But those things look like bricks, compared to the Toshiba. For me, Toshiba's slim design was very important.

Issues include a low expandability (only 1 SD slot) and a relatively slow 300 MHz proc - slow as in it's not 400 Mhz, mind you; it's still plenty fast for everyday use. Plus, it's less stable than the Palm OS. As a comparison, I had to restart my old Palm maybe once or twice in the year that I used it. This Pocket PC, I have to restart about once a week. It's somewhat annoying, but I find it an acceptable trade-off for the better features.

Very pleased with my Toshiba!
This is my 3rd PDA in one week, and I'm very happy with my decision to return my 2 previous purchases, both Palm's. I started with the Palm M500 thinking since this is my first PDA and I'm not a real "technoid", it should suffice. Wrong! I wasn't happy with the monochrome and I figured for a little more money I could double my memory and get color so I returned it for the 515m. While I was very happy with that product and had easily mastered the graffiti and the "user friendly" applications, I was not totally satisfied until I checked out the Pocket PC's. After much research and looking around, I chose the Toshiba e335, and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. It has the ability to play mp3's which the palms did not and the color screen is much easier to read than the palm m515. I also prefer the Microsoft format and the ability to chose which writing style I prefer; block recognition, transcriber, letter recognizer or keyboard. It also has a voice recorder which I haven't used yet. All in all this is a great unit and the more I play around with it the more I like it. I haven't had any difficulty synchonizing it and I have activated the Avantgo feature and update daily the channels I have selected to view. With this device and the os, I will not feel the desire, nor the need, to upgrade in the near future. This should satisfy for a very long time.

Good PDA
Got it around my birthday Sept of 2003, Great buy, 2 problems shipping took almost 2 weeks instead of 2 days from NJ to MA, 2nd Battery problems almost 2 months later Toshiba was able to replace but battery problem continued so I gave up. All in all 8 months later and other than battery still loving it. Would buy from seller again. Still the shipping was a bit delayed but it was still a reliable PDA

Great PC, Don't buy from Amazon
On December 2, 2003 I ordered the Toshiba E335 from Amazon.com because it showed a great price and a 20 dollar mail-in-rebate. I was so excited to find a Pocket PC with 300 MHZ, MS Pocket PC 2003, and 64 MB of ram for under 200 dollars that I purchased one for my dad and one for my brother-in-law as Christmas Gifts. I was certain I would receive my package any day when I received an email from Amazon.com Customer Service saying that they had oversold the pocket pc and I would receive neither of the items I ordered. Needless to say, I am very discouraged.

Great As A First PDA
If you're shopping around for your first PDA, the Toshiba E-335 Pocket PC should satisfy. It comes with 64MB of memory with an SD slot for additional storage. The interface is easy to read and understand and bright (but this comes at a cost at draining your battery power). Its very thin and light. Synchronizing with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or XP to a laptop or desktop PC with the USB is painless and fast. You can even browse the Web with the included Internet Explorer, view PDFs with the included Acrobat Reader, and play MP3s with the included Windows Media Player. My only quibble is that a slight push of the buttons can turn it on without you knowing while its in your pocket, draining the battery, but configuring the power setting to shut off after a minute of idle time should counter this. ... I love mine, more pros than cons
I had the iPAQ but I had to have an expansion pack to use a CF card and the battery seemed to die everyday. This has everything I want built in. I know it doesn't have Bluetooth, but either does my laptop or cell phone but both have IR so the included IR on the e805 was important. I have a 1gb CF card and a 512sd card which are recognized without a hitch (not the case on my iPAQ where I constantly had to soft boot) WiFi configured really easily. I backed up my new unit and did a hard reset and restore, which worked perfectly and easily. I love the large screen for viewing my photos and short mov videos and my maps from pocket streets, the included apps are great but I did have one multimedia app from my iPAQ that I use and love. Battery lasts about 3 days w/normal use. Not as large as I expected, but then the iPAQ w/expansion was very large and heavy. I use a leather case for the e740 which was tight at first, but works great. Toshiba isn't the greatest with support or customer service and this unit didn't come with ANYthing, no cards, no screen cover, no case, which did come with my iPAQ. But I love the built in CF and SD cards, the large screen, ease of use voice recorder. The only thing I don't like is the stylus.

This is one Great PPC - Highly recommended
Well, I took the plunge and replaced my E740 finally. I decided to go with the E805 because of the built SD and CF card slots. I bought the Pharos GPS system at the same time, hence my decision to get the 805 over any of the HP models.

Out of the box, the unit is a thing of moderate beauty. The blue face is a welcome change from the standard silver faces of most PDAs. The button panel is well layed out and very handy. There is an option to make the 4 way button into an 8 way button, that might be handy for gamers.

On turn on, the thing just aims to please the user. This screen is BRILLIANT, even when not in VGA mode. It's bright, bigger than most at 4 inches and has wonderful color. When you switch to VGA mode, it gets even better, but more on that later. The box has all the necessary equipment, and in a few moments I was installing everything that I have from previous PDAs and delighted to see it all working well. Then I noted the speed, this thing is a demon. Having the extra memory (128mb) and 400mhz processor is a real boon. By the time I was done installing all my software on it, I was nowhere near the memory crunch I had with all my previous machines.

The built in VGA is a little weird, since as delivered by Toshiba, the VGA mode is very limited in what it can do. There are, however, 2 free programs over at the brighthand site that allows all programs to use VGA mode.

The built is WiFi is GREAT, I turned it on and it found my wireless network in a few moments and I was surfing the web. Gotta love that!

All in all, this is my best and favorite PDA of all. Bye IPAQ, Hello 805

The toggle switch on my new e805 broke the second time I moved it from WiFi to off. I sent the unit in under warrenty. Toshiba warrenty department said the mother board must be replaced to fix the toggle switch and is not covered under warrenty. They charged $125.00 to repair unit. I've bought a lot of Toshiba products, this will be the last.

Works Fine !
I purchased the e805 dispite the bad reviews here and let me tell you mine works fine. I use it with navagation software and find it works way better than I expected.(travroute) E-mail works fine as does connecting to wireless internet services. I have had no problems with the screen. Not to mention I got lucky and paid $499.00 from COMPUSA. 2 THUMBS UP...Anyone interested in navagation software should give TRAVROUTE a try.

1) The touch screen is now starting to malfunction. When I first turn the unit on I am getting many clicks (as if I am tapping the screen, which I am not). Also, later, if I even touch the case at the upper/right corner (not even near the actual display) the unit clicks (as if I am tapping the screen). Also upper sides of case sometimes.
2) Status of Toshiba Order for critical supplies (screen overlays and replacement styli):
Shipping is Waiting to Pack Order (from Toshiba account status)
In other words, they still don't have the items. About March 10, 2004 the screen overlays FINALLY arrived. Not a bad turnaround for something critical - two months. However, the unit is now inoperable, the screen does not respond. Did a total system reset, was operable for awhile. Then, screen clicking like a geiger counter it has stopped responding again. ... For many, Compaq's iPAQs were the pick of the first round of Pocket PC releases. Now that Microsoft has released a new version of its Pocket PC operating system (Pocket PC 2002), the company's previous hardware partners have all updated their products and some new players have joined in. The net result is greater competition--so how does Compaq fare?

The new range of iPAQ is available in two versions. The iPAQ 3765 is much like the popular 3635 model, but has the new OS on board. The iPAQ 3835, our review unit, is similar in body, but adds a few extra features.

The 3835 is driven by Intel's fast StrongARM processor, which runs at 206 MHz, and is outfitted with a healthy 64 MB RAM. The Pocket PC 2002 OS itself is stored on the 32 MB flash ROM, so you should be able to easily install OS updates as they come along. The screen quality is superb and can show over 65,000 colors--a greater color depth than the 3765.

Most hardware expansion is provided via an optional CompactFlash expansion jacket, with CF cards and modules from previous iPAQs largely compatible with the iPAQ 3835. Note, however, that this does not carry through to hardware add-ons that use the docking port (such as keyboards), as the connector on the 3835 is different than on the 3635 or 3765.

Additionally, there is now a built-in expansion slot onboard that enables you to add both software and hardware to the iPAQ without the need for the CF expansion jacket. This slot is compatible with both Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory cards.

The iPAQ's design and build quality are superb; this is still the best-looking Pocket PC around. The docking station is both USB and serial--this "one size fits all" approach is intelligent and user friendly. Data input has also been improved, including the ability to register more than one button press at a time, making speedy gaming possible as some light relief from all the serious work you can set the device to.

Superb Device
The iPAQ 3835 is one of the best investments I've made in a while. I was constantly forgetting about meetings and appointments, and had resorted to using MSN to keep track. While MSN is a good PIM, it just isn't fully featured enough for me.

The iPAQ is not just a PIM (personal info manager) though, it can play MP3s, let you compose Word documents, take voice commands, write e-mails, and much much more. The Pocket 2002 OS is awesome as well. Looks a bit like a mix of Windows XP and Windows 3.1 (for the good, I promise).

I've been downloading a lot of games from places like handango.com and pocketgear.com. The 206mhz processor and ample RAM makes multimedia apps run darn smooth.

If you're a developer type, Microsoft has eMbedded Tools out for download over at pocketpc.com I've been tinkering with eMbedded VB. While not too powerful of a language (its more akin to VBScript), its highly simplistic.

To sum it up - get one! Get one now.

Oh Baby Oh Baby
Look, I did hours and hours of research. I could write a publishable paper on the various features of PDAs so let me assure you if you're considering this product it is a pretty safe bet compared to it's peers. That also includes hours of reading consumer reviews. If you are looking for a product with Microsoft Office software, then this is the one you MUST buy. Dell has serious customer service issues and the Toshibas just didn't rank as high on quality and reliability. Spend the extra $$ and get the Ipaq. You will pat yourself on the back later.

What's great about this little gizmo is that you can download all of your Microsoft files in a heartbeat. It is a high quality computer. You can spend a little more and get higher meg and such but now you're just buying a whole new system aren't you? If you want a high quality PDA then this is the one you should buy. It has every feature imaginable (or obtainable) boasts of a high battery life and the graffiti feature is brilliant. If you've read something about a vulnerable screen, don't worry. Ipaq now boasts of a hinged case to protect the screen. This looks awesome and is awesome. So far, I have been really pleased.

I've Had This For Over A Year And I Still Love It!!!
I looked online for hours to find an affordable PDA that would allow me to do everything I wanted. I'm a full time college student and I find I can take notes, set up appointments and have my schedule on demand. I have my tasks organized and get more accomplished. I can also pull up phone numbers and email addresses of friends, teachers, and even restaurants when my friends and I order out. Plus I can play games while waiting for my next class to start. It also synchronizes perfectly with my desktop computer's version of Microsoft Outlook. I can download maps to my PDA for trips with step-by-step driving directions. The PDA is light and I can carry it in my purse all the time without it weighing me down. The unit has held up great for the year and few months I've had it. I know that newer systems have come out since I bought this back in November of 2002, but if you find a new or used version of this PDA I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I also bought, and would recommend, a zippered holder that is waterproof (I spill things on my nightstand a lot.) It also helps protect the unit if you drop it. The only other thing you might want is to buy the memory expansion card. It's only about $35 and it triples your memory. You'll find that you can fill up your memory a lot faster than you think. (I buy too many e-books from Amazon!) I really think this is a good PDA for a student or anyone else and I take mine with me everywhere.

Best Business PDA Tool I have used
I have owned Several Palm Based PDs and one Palm Smart Phone. This is by far the best of the bunch. I never thought I could use a PDA as a palm comuter, but this product does it hands down. I am an oustside sales person and really need to have access to my Act Database and need to be able to access several XL files. Not only does this product provide me the access and editing tools it also allows me to print via IR to a protable printer in my car. Now my lap top stays in the trunk and my PDA travels with me. BIG Thumbs up.

I'm going back to a Palm!!
When I originally bought this PDA it had such great reviews and I though it would be a good replacement/upgrade for my old Palm (that never gave me any trouble by the way). I have had it for over 6 months now and I have been so unhappy with its performance. The battery life is horrible!! I travel a lot and need something that I don't need to charge twice a day. I don't play games or read books on it, so I don't use up the battery life that way. The worst thing is that unlike Palms you lose everything if your battery runs out!!!! Who ever heard of that. If you keep backing up to your computer you can restore it, but you really have to be on the ball with that, because if you don't too bad it's gone! Nice PDA -- Networking Still Weak
.
As a PDA, the Toshiba e740 is the best I've seen yet. However, it, like all PDAs based on Microsoft's Windows CE, falls short on networking.

I've been hoping that Microsoft and its partners would get networking right some day. The Toshiba e740 looked like it might be the answer. With its built-in WiFi wireless network adapter, it appeared that the e740 at least would provide useful local area network connectivity. However, like most WiFi devices, the e740's range is too short and the battery drain is too high.

Oh, well, how about wide area networking with a wireless modem? I was able to find one wireless modem that would plug into the e740's compact flash slot. This modem, its name escapes me, adds 5 inches to the e740's almost 5 inches and costs an arm and two legs in monthly fees. With the modem in place, the e740 takes on the form factor of a clamshell handheld Windows CE PC. Forget that. I'm trying to replace a Blackberry wireless e-mail device.

I'm now looking at Handspring's Treo 300. It's got everything that the Blackberry delivers including size plus it's a wireless phone, has a color screen and supports web browsing. Wireless networking is part of your phone service and the cost for wireless phone and networking (from Sprint) is about the same as I'm now paying for separate wireless phone and Blackberry wireless e-mail.

E 740 problems
This is a a great PDA execpt for one thing. It is has NO built-in memory to save stored data. The E 750 took care of this problem and Toshiba essentially stifed the owner of the orignal -including my letter to them which was written before one year warrantee. They never even answered my letter.

Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba

No Upgrade
I was pleased with its performance until I realized that Toshiba doesn't offer the upgrade to Pocket PC 2003. Seems like just a ploy for me to sell it and buy the 755, which is the same machine. Needless to say I'm not happy with Toshiba's support of this product.

So-so, but mine still works!
I bought this shortly after the recall (November 2002). It's been over a year and a half, and I still use mine daily! I've only had the 1% battery problem once because I usually sit mine to recharge overnight. Is it a hassle? Not if I need to update information on it daily (e-mails, appointments, etc).

All in all, it's been frustrating to see poor reviews and then see Toshiba not support the e740 any more. However, with proper management, you can get a WiFi enabled PDA with SD/CF slots for cheap and be pretty satisfied with yourself!

Get it if you can find it for a good price.
I brought the E740 1 month ago for a very good price. If you are looking for a wi-fi enabled PDA, but don't want to spend too much on it, take a look at the E740. I read most of the reviews on Amazon and other opinions site, most people have negative opinions on the E740. Their opinions are understandable, since they got it for a very high price, and the performance does not match its price tag. After I using it for over a month, here are some of the pros and cons in my opinion on the E740.

Pros:
Wi-Fi!!! You can't find a PDA with integrated Wi-Fi in this price range.

CF(compatible with both type I/II) and SD slot. It really offers you a lot of upgrade options with both the CF and SD slot. I personally use a 512 SD card and leave the CF slot for a 56K cf modem.

User replaceable battery

Cons:
Windows Mobile 2002, and Toshiba does not offer upgrade to the WM2003. THis is a big deal, since Microsoft change the database for WM2003, which means new programs will not be compatible with WM2002. Also, Windows 2003 is written to take advantage of the XScale processor in the E740, which supposingly will boost up system performance and increase battery life.

It crashes, but in my opinion is is acceptable. It doens't crash all the time, but occasionally.

THis is pretty much it. In term of battery life, I think most other Windows based PDA offer identical battery life. (Well, except some big PDAs like Dell X5, it offer better life, but it's very bulky) I think the PDA deserve anywhere from 50%-60%, since it does offer a lot of features, and at a relatively low price. The Pocket PC is great, but....
I bought my 1910 when it came out in Dec. 2002. I wanted something that literally would fit in my shirt pocket without feeling that I was carrying a lump of coal in there. I considered the then-new Dell pocket PC, but this one was smaller, lighter, and at least as capable. Functionally, I definitely give it 5 stars. In particular, the display is as bright and crisp as on the more expensive iPAQ models. My dissatisfaction is, to a degree, my own fault. I knew when I bought it that no accessories for other iPAQ models would be compatible. But I thought that in a few months, either HP or third parties would address this. However, there is still no reasonably priced custom-fit case for it, nor a keyboard or modem. Maybe sales haven't been high enough to justify this. If you view this as a top-end PDA on which you can play MS solitaire, rather than as a fully functional pocket PC, then you should be extrememly pleased.

everything you expect but still missing
I've been a PDA for about 4 years. Started out with a Compaq iPaq running Windows CE and loved it. When I dropped it and the screen broke, my extended warrantee replaced it with a Palm Vx and it did the job but I always wanted a Windows CE again. The newer iPaq models were just too large for my needs. When I saw the 1910 I ditched the Vx and Pocket PC is everything I remembered and more.

The screen on this is fantastic. Super bright and extremely vibrant. Way better than the monochrome on my old iPaq and my Vx.

If you use Microsoft Outlook, Pocket PC is must have. The one thing I really like is when you sync with MS Outlook you get all the information (i.e. multiple address, all phone numbers, etc.) unlike the Palm where it was a partial sync.

The size is amazing. Smaller than my Vx and iPaq, it makes it very nice when you're on the go. The newer iPaqs, although much like a full blown computer, are much too large to carry around daily.

The only thing keeping me from rating this as 5 stars is you to buy the cradle separately, that's bogus. Also, why isn't there a case available? My old iPaq came with a sleeve. My Vx had that flap thing and I had the optional form fitting hard case. HP needs to get with it and offer a case at the minimum and should include some sort of case.

One should try this
I received iPaq as a birthday gift from my fiance.I know quite well about electronics.
My initial impression was Wow..
The Display/Graphics is extremely pleasing.Navigation is very simple..so any starter who is not very techno savvy can operate this PC with ease.Since the operating system is Windows CE,its very simple to browse thru(as many are familiar with Windows GUI).The best feature ofcourse is Outlook Syncup (must for all Pocket PCs ofcourse) but its easy and quick.The software installation is not too difficult either.The sound quality is good and works great with a Secure Digital card as well.

Now for a few Cons,
The conventional "CROSS" at Top,right hand corner doesnot stand for "Closing" of the program but it means "Minimising" the screen.That leaves your program still running in Backgroud.So even if the display shows your "desktop" (Today screen) there are functions running in backgroud...This will make your PC freeze often if many programs are running.
This PC freezes very often and I have to reset it then.
If it freezes real bad then you will have to Hard reset it which means your data is lost.
So I would suggest that "Stop" all the running programs at certain intervals..You have that option in "Settings".

But overall I am very happy with the performance...
I would advise one to buy it.

Sync problems keep cropping up/no support
I've had mine for 1.5 years, and it's very useful, except for one problem. I can't sync. At all.

At first it synced fine, but after a while, I had occasional problems and would have to spend hours getting it to work, because my comp would not be able to find the device (I've found many reasons for this, and trust me - they are a pain to chase down - even fluff in the connector and an iffy signal to the interface will do the trick). This time, I've spent a week of evenings searching for the solution. When I checked the HP Web site, this item was totally lacking in help, I believe because it is no longer sold. My comp is fine, the device is fine, and the Activesync is there - they just are not speaking. I call this the "family feud PDA" - they are close, they are family - they won't talk.

I've given up on it - bought a Palm-based product for a bit higher cost. So easy, plus it has a camera, an MP3 player, and it syncs!

hp1910 - Nice size, lousy hardware, would not buy again
I've used PDAs for 10+ years and this unit does not compare favorably. Best features: Screen is great, software on the PDA works great. Three biggest drawbacks: 1)Unprotected buttons on front and side lead to inadvertent activation of software and battery drain whenever the unit is touched (think pocket, purse or briefcase), 2) this unit communicates only through synchronization, there is no way to communicate with any other hardware (no GPS, no serial port connection, etc.), and 3) the Microsoft ActiveSync software and/or the interface with this device is buggy (I've had lots of problems that were only recoverable by finding and deleting folders and files on my PC and then starting the connection process from scratch). I would not buy this product again and was very disappointed to uncover the missing serial port capability (not obvious until I got the unit home). ... Read more

Had a bad case of PPC envy - but going back to Palm OS
I've been a long time Palm user starting with a Pro and owning 6 or 7 since, most recently an M515. The screen was what first attracted me to this unit plus the wireless network, well, it 'sort of' worked for a month, but I've had enough. This unit seems like it would be a good idea, but isn't. Installation and initial sync went very smooth, but that was only the beginning.
DAY 1: First day carrying it, it locked up solidly - it wouldn't turn off or soft reset, I didn't have the CD w/the manual on it (bad idea) with me, so I didn't know how to hard reset. I tried taking the battery off, but the unit just came back on (in it's locked up state) when the battery was reinstalled - so I just let it die. I spent that evening getting it running again and trying to get the wireless networking to connect to my Linksys WAP11. After fiddling way too much, I finally got my mail and MSN Messenger to work, but not the browser. Finally I called HP's support site and was warned that any help he gave me was on a 'best try only' basis - no promises - we couldn't get the thing to work.
DAY 2: I left the wireless networking enabled and went to work - the battery was completely dead by Noon - with wireless enabled the battery seems to have a painfully short life. So I spent that evening restoring it again. I went to HP's website and found an external battery ...

Perfect huh? - Ordered this puppy immediately - only to find it only works with the expansion pack which adds expansion slots, but also a LOT of bulk - just to have a reasonable battery life? I called HP to return it and the agent sent me to the parts department for a second battery to carry. .... he assured me that I didn't have the skills to replace the battery. I told him that it just had a little latch on it and it flipped out and I was quite sure I could handle it. He replied that the case was sealed and that no one but HP was authorized to open it. I told him that tech support had asked me to remove the battery to retrieve the serial number from the label under it and didn't see the problem with removing it. He was then VERY annoyed, told me that I didn't know what I was talking about, and hung up. I figured that there will be higher capacity batteries in the aftermarket soon.

Now it's over 3 weeks later and although I haven't missed any meetings or anything because this thing failed me, I've come close, and instead of just grabbing my Palm and using it without giving it any thought, I find myself reaching for it and wondering if it's going to work. I finally decided I've had enough. I picked out one of the new [brand name] Palm OS units w/MP3 and ordered it. I then decided to call HP and see if they would consider a return for a one month old order - they did so without hesitation - they looked at their records and saw that I had several tech support contacts on it, appologized that it didn't work out and even sent FedEx with a pickup tag.

The Palm is by far a better platform for simple organizer tasks, but the PPC 'horsepower' is great when using spreadsheets and the like - I thought I could have both.

Great when you get past the manuals,...
This product works as advertised, but the manuals are useless and so is technical support. Managed to get wi-fi working without too much trouble - if you have wireless for your pc it's the same setup. Had to do a hard reset once and couldn't restart wi-fi, called technical support and their knowledge of what to do was non-existent...finally quoted their manual to them! Bluetooth works well as well, but setting it up is difficult if you try to use their manuals. Called tech-support, they tried a few things, then claimed it was a documented problem with Nokia, so I should call them! Called Nokia and they were just as bad/wrong! Finally resolved ALL problems by going to t-mobile web site where they have a configuration site that show how to link a wide randge of pda's to a wide range of phones - worked first time using their info.

When you get it working, you WILL love it!

Good Value/Powerful Pocket PC
These guys who are palm lovers just have a hard time switching to the Pocket PC! I am a switcher. The transition was tough at first back a couple of years ago. The Palm OS is surely faster and more user friendly but has much less to offer. This IPAQ is a powerful one and the screen quality, handwritting recognition and wifi options are unmatched by any Palm device. I have not found much use yet for the Bluetooth and the security features are good but I don't know that I need them. Still, what a great tool for word processing, spreadsheets, web surfing and more. Lighten up Palm boy!

Big problems for the $$ - otherwise it could be great.
I purchased the iPaq 5455 one year ago, directly from HP when it first hit the market, paying $649 plus $200 for a 3 year top of the line warranty. I have had several problems with the unit. Starting with the display on the unit going out only after a month or two of receiving it. The next problem was with the battery loosing its charge. Most recently, I have been having the recurring problem of the unit locking up not powering on. And like others, I have never been able to sync my info wirelessly.

I have placed several calls to tech support. I have troubleshooted the unit while on the phone with them and even sent the unit in for repair a month ago, in which I did not get a replacement unit, although my extended warranty states that I should. I received the unit back from repair and the documentation stated that no parts were replaced. Knowing that I definitely had a problem with the unit, I called tech support to see what was repaired. I was told a big lie that the battery was changed and the ENC part was replaced. Looking at my unit now, I see that it is the same battery that I had when I sent it in for repair.

Thinking that all was fixed with my unit, I downloaded all of my information. The next day I experienced the same problem with the unit not powering on with the power button. I placed another call to tech support in which the tech and myself troubleshooted the unit. The tech told me to hard boot my unit which erased all of my data. I was told not to install the one 3rd party software that I had installed to monitor the situation. I once again reinstalled my information without the 3rd party software. Again, my unit would not power on. Again, I called tech support and angrily described my situation.

Finally, the tech tells me that I will be sent a REFURBISHED unit. I received the refurbished unit two days ago and encountered the same problem once I loaded all of my data on to it. HP tech support has you to hard reset the unit to erase all data, which appears to make the unit work properly, but once the data is loaded, the problems begin. Today I called tech support and told them I am returning the refurbished replacement unit and keeping my original to see what their customer care department does to satisfy me.

I purchased the unit because I felt it would be an asset to my busy professional life, but it has been nothing but a hassle. I have sent several email complaints to HP customer support and finally to the CEO Carly Fiorina. I got a reply email from her address stating that someone would be in contact with me.

Each call and every email, I have gotten the same script of "we apologize for your inconvenience". The tech support department located in India is very unhelpful and they speak to you as if you were an idiot.

The unit has some slick features, but right now I am very dissatisfied and frustrated.

I got the HP5455 2 months ago. The battery life is horrible, interface is awkward, and form-factor too large.... After dealing with the thing for 2 months, I've spent another $500 to replace it with a new palm (which I love). Stay away from the HP5455. ... Read more

I just bought this thing from Amazon and all I can say is WOW!!!!

This is probably the best purchase I have ever made. This thing is everything I ever expected and more!! It's easy to use as well - even my wife can operate it!

I have to say, everyone out there who is thinking of buying this, stop thinking. I bought it and I am extremely happy with it the moment I powered this thing on. YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS PURCHASE! I GUARANTEE IT!!!

Fun but limiting
The best thing about this is the design, but the arms connecting the screen and keyboard look odd when the unit is closed. The screen is fairly dim, and must be used in a dark/moderately lit room. The viewing angle of the screen is horrible; the only position you can see the whole screen without an inversion/blackout effect is at an angle where any overhead lighting glares all over the place. The CPU speed isn't particularly slow, but the graphics ([re]drawing the screen) goes on at an awful crawl - i.e. it's no good for graphical things. Now I must sound entirely bitter and biased against this machine, but I'm not, I carry it in my bag all the time and use it when I can. I even use it as an electronic book, its best use so far.

It's a true love/hate relationship
Let me state first off that I love(d) this machine! It is light-weight, easy to use and interfaces superbly with your desktop or notebook.
That said, I feel that I need to warn you that in 1 year, I have had to return my machine 4 times for the same repair. It freezes, won't shut off, then after a hard reset, won't turn back on. Sharp has replaced the battery, the main chip and the inverter, now is going to charge me [alot] to fix the machine! I was considering buying a new one, until I talked to my Dad who also bought one at my recomendation and found out that his is doing the same thing. Obviously, I didn't get a rare lemon.
Take a chance if you must, but I am steering clear of this wonderful little computer until they fix some major problems!

Convenient, compatible and cool!
I have had my Mobilon for a year now and I still love it. As a professional journalist and technical writer, this little PC has made me more productive and efficient. Rather than using a notepad and pen, I bring along my Mobilon and essentially take dictation from interviewees. With applications like Pocket Word, Excel and PowerPoint, it snycs beautifully and easily with my desktop for more technical applications and the 12 hour battery life is fabulous! It also syncs with Outlook so I have all my contacts and my schedule with me. The touch screen technology and built-in handwriting recognition software mean I don't have to find a surface for a mouse and I can take notes or draw figures with the stylus. The monitor resolution is very clear, though hard to read in bright sunshine, so don't take it poolside. Color and grahics are very good, though you are limited when it comes to your choice of fonts--not a critical item for me.

I have small hands, so I think the keyboard is big enough for me, though some people have commented that typing on it is awkward. I disagree.

Of course, you can download or buy lots of great software from Bubblet (TM) to finance and utilites, so the sky's the limit for how you decide to use this impressive little machine.

If you are looking for a laptop that doesn't weigh seven pounds but is powerful enough for Word documents, spreadsheets and more, the Sharp Mobilon is for you.

Do I love it or hate it ?
I bought my Tripad last year and at the time it was my sole computer for PIM, Internet word processing. Unfortunately a good concept in design is let down by so-so software and slow proceesing. 70Mhz was slow even for its time what with the Jornada 820 at 190Mhz. Most applications tend to hang if too many are opened simultaneously and Sharp's machine does not contain most of the goodies that are standard with the vadem clio. Lastly the machine weighs a ton and the only person who could use this machine on the fly would be jesse ventura or hulk hogan. On the other hand it has a tremendous wow factor, ipaq notwithstanding. both a pcmcia and a cf slot and although you cannot install the microdrive it has enough room for memory expansion. a StrongARM processor with 206 Mhz, 64 MB RAM, Windows CE 3.0 and lose a pound of weight and you can be the king of the world. as is it is only a mediocre performer. ...
