Amazon.com Product Description

Protect your 15-inch or smaller laptop while on the road and charge it at a moment's notice with this APC ballistic nylon travel case, which is specifically designed for use with APC's universal power adapter (sold separately). The case is an ideal choice for today's mobile professionals because it not only shields your laptop from rough handling at security checkpoints, but it also (via the power adapter) lets you charge the laptop and two other devices using any two-prong AC outlet, airline power plug, or 12-volt cigarette lighter plug. This handy feature helps keep you productive during cross-country and overseas flights without worrying whether your laptop battery will survive the journey. And should power outlets prove unavailable, the case can also hold APC's universal notebook battery, which provides hours of extra runtime for the average laptop.

The case's durability stems from its double-stitched seams, tough nickel fittings, and thick, shock-resistant foam walls, which can withstand harsh treatment without damaging the computer inside. Business travelers will welcome the series of interior mesh pockets, which are ideal for holding business cards, computer peripherals, cell phones, calculators, and more. The case also includes a removable spill-proof pouch for storing particularly important items, such as immigration documents, plane tickets, and other essentials. The bag is especially suitable for frequent travelers, as the heavy-duty ballistic nylon exterior delivers years of trouble-free use. Additional features include an adjustable strap with a nonslip shoulder pad, a security strap that affixes to the top of a rolling suitcase, and a specially designed front pocket for items that demand easy access at all times. The case measures 16.25 by 15 by 7.75 inches (W x H x D) and includes an interior space of 1,300 cubic inches. It also carries a 90-day warranty against defects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It!
I love this thing!

I hated PDAs... Had no use for the things, until this little gem came along. Pop it in, load up some maps and you've got a pretty sophisticated GPS in your pocket. Now my PDA is always by my side.

It took a little practice getting used to it, but once I did, I started finding my way to and from places I never would've found before. I drove down to Atlanta and spent nearly a month in unfamiliar roads, but I never got lost.

One of the great things about it is that it's integrated with the Contact Manager (which gets synched by the PDA software with Outlook and AOL contacts), so you can find anyone in your contact list.

Here are a few things you should know:

1. Make sure your PDA has TWO memory slots. One Compact Flash for the Pharos, and the other for you to place a traditional memory card. In my case, my PDA has a second SD memory slot which I keep a 256MB card in that has maps for about 3 states that I travel to.

2. Invest in the optional car kit. It gives you:

a) A car power cord so your unit stays on, for your trip without losing power (it also charges your PDA).

b) A cool little holder to hang your PDA on your air conditioning vents so it stays put when you drive.

c) An external antenna to give you a stronger signal. In my case I generally don't use it.

3. Practice for a bit on familiar turf. You need to know how to re-route yourself in a pinch if you make an incorrect turn. I found that the routing was generally pretty accurate, but often it doesn't have North/South/East/West designations, so it may just say "highway exit ahead", when in fact there is a fork in the exit giving you an East/West choice... so you are forced to look at the screen and make a guess as to which one to pick. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Package for the price
I am very happy with the Magellan MAP 330x GPS. I had purchased it because, for the price, it was better than any of the other brands. It has a good battery life (9-10 hours from 2 AAs depending on how often you use the light feature) , and comes with map software which is a must for this type of GPS. The features it has meet or surpass other products in its class. The only problem I have with it, is that in order to see any local streets you must be zoomed in pretty close, but you can't expect much more since the screen is only about 3"X2". I feel that its very accurate... With the map software I can see all of the rural streets around my home. Sometimes it takes a while for the unit to orient its self, but once it has gone through its cycle it stays locked on, even in my basement. I did my homework on this one, and I would recommend it over the other brands, unless they can come up with a better package... Though the others might have products in the same category, they don't package their GPS with the software and the data cable so they can ding you with the cost of buying it later. ... It would be worth your while to do some research before you buy though, so take the time to look around on the above web pages, and visit epinions.com to help you make a sound purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good unit
My review is based on a trial period of less than one month. I ended up returning the GPS to buy another of Magellan's models. In retrospect, after a year of use with the newer model, I believe the size of the MAP 330 makes it better suited for some uses, such as carrying it in your jeans pocket. With this unit, Magellan has recessed the power button so that it cannot be easily depressed as it is with newer models. On the downside, the screen and button size is larger with other Magellan models, which may be important to some individuals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Compared with Garmin eTrex Vista
I purchased Magellan MAP 330X two years ago. That one was working really fine. But because its design was not as cute as I would expect, I sold it off eBay one year ago. Then I was searching for a replacement one, and it was found to be Garmin eTrex Vista. So I purchased it and used it during the 2002 Christmas vacation in California. To my much disappointment, it is really quite inferior to MAP330. The only reason I bought it was it it looks cute, easy to fit my pocket. However, on technically side, there are many problems. After making painfully decision, I decide to sell it and buy back the MAP300 again.

First, Garmin's GPS does not come with the detailed city maps, which is sold separately for $99+. It is quite expensive. Magellan's city map comes with MAP330X. (Garmin's GPS is already sold higher than comparable Magellan's). Second, Vista's map on the screen is not floating. For example, if the street name is "Main St.", and the first two character "Ma" is happened to be cutoff on the left side, the screen only displays "in St.". Very bad, isn't it? MAP330X's text names are floating to fit in the screen. Third, very very bad, Vista is very slow and difficult to lock the satellite signals. And once it does lock, it is quite easy to get lost (see other reviews for any Magellan GPS). This is the main problem that makes me abandon it finally, even though I like its stylish design so much. Fourth, once it lost the satellite signals, it displays the message on the bottom of all screens and just will not go, which blocks the necessary information (such as elevator, distance, street name, etc.) that I will like to see even though the signal is off. Fifth, it is quite difficult to navigate the map to left, right, up or down. In MAP330X, you just move the cursor, using one hand only, can do it, whileas same functionality in Vista needs two steps and needs two hands. It is not likely to do it during driving. Sixth, although Vista outside design is quite cute, its button locations are very bad. It is very difficult to manipulate them using one hand during the driving. You may say it is not supposed to use it during driving. But using it during driving, so what, it is just a quite look on the screen, just like drinking an soda or eat a bite of McDonald. It does not cause any problem when using probably. Plus, it is only useful during the driving when one needs to figure out if he/she is in the right direction on highway, or if miss an exit, and how far it is needed to get the destination. Without the proper use of it with one hand, you bet how many people will be buying a GPS. Seventh, when Vista is first turned on, it locks the screen to scan the satellite frequencies (which is already quite long compared with MAP330X) and does not allow you to go to any other screen further. This is also very bad feature. Sometime I just want to see the map of last location, I don't really need to track the current location; or I just want to setup configurations, why should I have to wait the satellite signal? There're also other major issues such as not showing what's the version number of the firmware, how much memory is left, what kind of external map is loaded, etc.

In this deflationary world, I make purchase carefully on high-tech gadgets. I understand the prices will drop quickly. So if I do buy it, I really expect to own it and consider the money is discarded. If a company does not provide a good product, it cannot expect to sell it too many, because nowadays there're on-line auction and trading sites everywhere. If a customer does not like the product generally after using it, he/she will sell it, say, at eBay. Therefore, the used ones get circulated again and again in the secondary trading market, making the new ones difficult to be mass sold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Unit, Limited use in SouthAmerica
This is my second Magellan GPS (Map 315 before), I think it is an excellent unit, very useful for almost every situation, works good with your computer. Things that need some improvement: Software mapping in SouthAmerica (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador), free software for jpg mapping conversion to upload to unit. Maps for outside USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
This is an excellent product. I'm very impressed by it's capabilties.
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, the one minor inconvience is the battery cover. I believe the fault lies in the fact the springs in the battery cover are located on the same end, consequently one battery's negative end is postitioned against the spring, while the other battery's positive end (which is too small) is postioned against its spring. If they could move the positive terminal spring to the opposite side, it would result in much better electrical contact.
If you have trouble closing the battery cover, check the positive terminal against the spring(it has a tendency to move out of position while loading batteries).
Make sure both batteries are securely in position, and you can firmly close the battery cover. ... Read more

Icons represent boat ramps, dams, marinas, campgrounds, public facilities, mile markers, first aid stations, picnic sites, swimming areas, ski areas, wrecks, fuel locations, and dangerous and restricted areas.

In addition, nautical navigational aids for the 50 states are provided, including radio beacons, RACONs, and fog signals; river, harbor, and other lights; and day beacons and lighted and unlighted buoys. Shipwrecks, submerged rocks, obstructions, and other hazards to nautical navigation are also displayed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Idaho - Plenty of Detail
.
A lot of people have been complaining about the lack of detail on MapSource. Well, I've got a different story to tell.

MapSource Topo covers the entire USA in 3 CDs (West, East, AK/HI). When running the program, go to Edit/Preferences and move the "Map Detail" bar from middle to high. Dirt roads, trails, streams, lakes, and all contour lines are displayed. I live in Idaho and was able to evaluate the trails in Idaho. You can print maps with MapSource too. The software does say that the scale is like the 1:100000 USGS maps; maybe some folks didn't realize what this meant before they bought it. Learn the USGS scales before you buy and then you won't be surprised.

If you want a step-by-step map, then buy the USGS 1:24000 series paper maps. However, MapSource is sufficient; it would be senseless to attempt a scale as large as 1:24000 on a small screen device such as a GPS. If you want 1:24000 maps, get National Geographic's Topo Series for your state...it's great!!! It also allows you to export waypoints and routes to your Garmin. It just won't load the actual map...only MapSource can do that.

Also, I've read the raving reviews about Maptech. What most people don't tell you is that Maptech and MapSource serve different purposes. MapSource is made by Garmin and can load tracks/waypoints/routes AND the actual map to your Garmin. Maptech can NOT load a map into your Garmin; Maptech is only good for loading waypoints/routes and then you have to PRINT the map. Instead of Maptech, get the National Geographic Topo map for your state; its less expensive and is quality stuff; it's the best for printed maps.

And one last thing... There are settings within the Garmin that determine how much detail a user will see. If these settings are turned to normal or medium, then don't expect to see the details (with or without MapSource).

I rate MapSource as 5 stars (best) because it delivers exactly what it promised. I'm very happy I made this purchase. Happy hiking...

3-0 out of 5 stars Garmin MapSource vs. Map Tech
I spent three hours online comparing different software for my Garmin E-Trex Vista, using my favorite little Northern Minnesota lake as my destination. I checked the difference between Garmin Mapsource Topo and Recreational, and found little difference. Sure they showed the lake, with pointy shorelines, and one big hill. It was kinda cool. Then I discovered Map Tech!!! The difference was breath-taking! Every little hill, a swamp, the reeds by the shore, and every subtle curve of the shoreline was shown in amazing detail! Instead of spending [$$] on the Garmin, and only being mildly excited, I spent an extra [$$], and got a map that gave me the confidence and peace-of-mind to explore all those unknown woods around the lake, with the full confidence of knowing every inch of the terrain. But only if you PRINT them. I was dissapointed that you can't load the maps into the Garmin Vista, only waypoints. So now all I can do is mark the trail the map so clearly shows on the computer, as waypoints against a blank field on the GPS. The only thing it didn't show, was the dirt road that led to the lake, which was an official Dept. of Natural Resources boat launch. Go to Maptech.com, and check out your favorite area for yourself.
If you want to load maps, then go hiking, MapSourse is best. If you want to plan a hike on the computer first, Maptech is best. (Haven't checked Nat'l Geographic).

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Note: This product includes an ancient version of Garmin's MapSource program. You will want to download an update from the Garmin Web site. A patch to the base map is also available there.

Even with these updates, the product is disappointing. There is very little detail. In the areas I examined, hiking trails were completely absent, and even major fire and logging roads were missing. Roads are shown in populated areas, but road names are not available. Newer roads are missing. Portions of the map appear to be at least 10 years out of date.

The density of contour lines is linked to the map scale and cannot be controlled independently. At high zoom factors, the number of contour lines is (barely) adequate, but at low zoom factors there are too few. Because of this, it is impossible to view major topographical features. The Colorado Rockies, for example, are completely invisible because at the scale necessary to see them in their entirety, the contour lines are gone. Even smaller features, such as a mountain 20 miles away, cannot be easily visualized. Without the aid of a GPS receiver, these maps would not be adequate for backcountry hiking.

The hype for this product claims that it is "comparable to USGS 1:100,000 scale maps". This is utter nonsense. As I write this, I am comparing just such a USGS map with the MapSource display of the same area. There is no comparison. To say that the USGS map blows MapSource away would be an understatement. Don't leave home without a paper map!

2-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're buying/ use the right tool for the job
I would just like to make a few comments about some of the reviews posted on this page concerning Mapsource's Topo USA software.

A number of reviewers have complained that this software is problematic or not accurate for cities or roads or neighborhoods. Well, while that may be the case, this product seems designed for the outdoors. It is intended to aid in navigating across wilderness areas (terrestrial and aquatic), not necessarily through the streets of downtown LA or any other city however large or small. Mapsource happens to sell a Metroguide product that is intended to serve city/road-navigation needs.

Yes, I will admit that the product description listed on this page talks about highways and roads and churches and other "non-wilderness" items and might be slightly misleading, but reviewing the entire product description I think you will see that the main emphasis is on wilderness travel.

Using this Mapsource Topo product for a purpose for which it was not specifically designed and then complaining about its lackluster performance is not really fair or accurate. You wouldn't use a toothbrush to brush your hair (although some might; I'm not passing judgement here) and it seems just as incorrect to use this product for urban needs. So if you have a StreetPilot or use your Garmin GPS for road/city navigation, check out the MetroGuide software and see if it suits your needs a little better.

Final point concerns the fact this product's maps are on the 1:100,000 scale. Be sure you know what this level of detail (or lack of detail as this case may be) means. I do not know what the contour interval of this scale map is, but the 1:63,360 scale maps are 100 feet (I believe). The 1:100,000 would have a larger contour interval and therefore, certain hills and ravines or valleys (depending on how big or small) might not show up on the map; they might be "hidden" between the contour intervals. Other software packages offer better mapping capabilities and easier user interface, but the one big drawback is that the topo maps generated by those programs cannot be downloaded into Garmin units; only MapSource topo maps can be downloaded.

I'm certainly not saying this product is error or problem free. Far from it. But the reviews should be as fair and accurate as possible so that other potential buyers can make well-informed decisions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!
To bad there wasn't a choice to give this 0 stars. Mapsource maps aren't good enough to deserve 1 star. I spent over a thousand bucks on a Garmin StreetPilot and the Mapsource unlock keys. The StreetPilot would be a great investment if it used maps other than those ones produced by Mapsource. If I use my StreetPilot as the gps receiver and hook it up to my laptop and run Microsoft's MapPoint, I get much more detailed maps and better accuracy. If Garmin wanted to improve their product, they'd leave the hardware alone and ditch Mapsource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable and comfortable
If you purchase an eTrex, make sure to get this carry case with it. It protects your GPS from scratches and it adds a belt strap. When hiking, or walking the belt strap is very useful.

I have not noticed any signal degradation when using the carry case. The Yellow eTrex still locks on and maintains its lock on the satellites with ease.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality product, but not all that useful.
This is a good, quality accessory from Garmin. I think it's best feature is the belt-clip. It does a good job of keeping dirt and scratches off your already durable eTrex, too; and makes it not so YELLOW. (which can be good or bad) My complaints are that the button holes become misaligned occasionally and make it a little harder to push the buttons. I think if the case fit a little tighter, it would help address that problem. Also, the plastic cover over the screen can cause extra glare. The eTrex is rugged enough that this is an unnecessary accessory, unless you need a belt-clip or want your GPS to stay bright and clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Garmin Case!!
For the price that you pay on this case, it's great. A little glare isn't going to get you lost in the mountains. The material feels good and durable. If you have a eTrex this is a great case to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars good covergae, screen cover has too much glare
this is a perfectly designed case for the etrex legend. Joystick is easily accessible, it fits snug, and the belt clip is nice and secure. My only complaint is the plastic window to protect the LCD. It's pretty thick and seems like it scratches pretty easily and makes the LCD more difficult to read with the heavy glare. Otherwise, it's a good thing to have to protect your GPS from invetible drops and abrasion.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'll Make The Case For This Case!
I'm an avid inline skater and I use a Garmin eTrex Venture to determine distance, speed, etc. The belt clip on this case allows me to clip the unit onto my left elbow pad strap. The clip holds very securely and the case itself does an excellent job of protecting the Venture during those unfortunate, but thankfully rare, falls. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Garmin's exclusive line of BlueChart marine cartography products is designed to provide interactive viewing of detailed nautical chart data. These detailed electronic nautical charts look just like paper charts when displayed on your Garmin chart plotter. Descriptive details for features typically found on nautical charts can easily be viewed with a simple key press. Cursor movements over the chart provide descriptions for contour depths, chart number, navaid name, and much more.

BlueChart data includes shaded depth contours, intertidal zones, spot soundings, wrecks, navaids, port plans, restricted areas, cable areas, anchorages, and more. Additionally, BlueCharts include information from the paper chart used in the digitization process, such as chart number, name, scale, revision date, and Notice-to-Mariners date.

Three MapSource BlueChart CD-ROMs are available: Americas, Atlantic, and Pacific. The Atlantic CD-ROM covers Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. One CD-ROM contains BlueChart data for an entire region. MapSource BlueChart is a Microsoft Windows-based program that uses Garmin Unlock technology, allowing you to use one coverage area from the CD-ROM when initially purchased and to purchase additional coverage areas. Internet access is recommended for the unlock process.

Compatible products include these Garmin marine chart plotters: GPSMAP 176, GPSMAP 176C, GPSMAP 182, GPSMAP 188 Sounder, GPSMAP 232, GPSMAP 238 Sounder, GPSMAP 2006, and the GPSMAP 2010. BlueChart CD-ROMs are also compatible with Garmin GPS receivers that accept map data, including the GPSMAP 76, eTrex Vista, and eTrex Legend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, fast, and easy to use
The Garmin "Bluecharts" are vector charts, which means they use mathematic algorithms to store all the lines and features of a nautical chart. I have steered away from these in the past because they tended to give up a lot of detail vs. "Raster Graphic" charts, which are essentially photographic images of paper charts.

With "Bluecharts" they have gotten to a level of detail (including multiple colors) that they look almost as good as a paper charts. The advantages of vector charts is that they take up much less room on your hard drive and run much faster on a PC. This is important when you are zooming in and out to see your depth or proximity to a wreck while moving on a boat.

I use mine with an eTrex Legend and am able to load most of the detail (depth, obstructions, nautical aids, etc) onto the handheld. For the full look of charts, I connect the GPS unit to my laptop. The package also includes tidal charts, which are much more detailed and accurate than the little tide chart booklets I used to use. Overall, it makes navigation a breeze...your boat is automatically represented on the chart and you have many simple tools to calculate distance/time to a given destination. It also incorporates additional information on Marinas and service locations.

The Garmin application the charts run on, "MapSource" allows you to easily switch between map types. I have "Americas Bluechart," "MetroGuide" (streetmaps), and "Tides and Marine Services," all without having to reconnnect the GPS unit.

The only hassle is the "Unlock" process, which is a bit time consuming and involves providing the Garmin website with a bunch of codes, including the serial number of my GPS unit to unlock a set of charts from the CD-ROM. I'm not sure, but I think it will only work with that specific unit, which worries me a bit as I am thinking about buying a second unit for backup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
I'll cut right to the chase--if you have a Garmin GPS unit that is MapSource compatible, and use it on the ocean, buy this CD! Garmin's Water Ways & Lights CD is a total joke compared to the BlueChart CD. The level of detail is an exact duplication of NOAA paper charts--very, very accurate and very, very detailed. I use this software with my GPSMAP 162, and the only drawback is that with the detail level set to high, it slows the screen redraw rate down considerably. but, when you're actually on the water, this isn't even noticeable. Bottom line--this is a great product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I just received my GPS mount, it was very easy to install on the bike. Getting the new battery cover on the GPS was a bit tricky but worked. The GPS unit snaps right on to the handlebar mount and can be taken off very easily. I ride mostly on paved trails and the unit worked fine the entire time. Would recommend for anyone who has an ETrex GPS and goes biking a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, with a simple fix it's a great product
I've had this for 8 months or so and I like it. But the bike mount has a major flaw. The battery cover has a very loose fit with the main unit. It got so bad that it managed to turn off the GPS on a ride over a fairly smooth road.
Here's the fix. Two pieces of electrical tape. I wrapped one piece around the bottom of the battery case and one around the top (this required scissors to trim the tape). I don't know how this affects the waterproofing, but the battery case grips the GPS like a limpit and everything works 100% better now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vibration problems
I had the same problems except that on the mountain bike it was fine, it was just anything above 5000rpm on a 600cc single and it would turn off instantly, at first I thought it may be interference but no it wasn't.
A small bit of firm foam where the battery connectors connect to the little posts and a thin bit above each battery and it's fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable and easy to use.
The bracket installed easily on 7/8" motorcycle handlebars. There was no noticeable vibration at speed. It held the unit securely, even through a 40 mph lowside crash.

I did not have an oppportunity to test the water resistance of the replacement battery cover. I don't see this as a problem for my intended usage of the product.

Overall, an excellent product, well worth the money. It'll be going on my new handlebars...

4-0 out of 5 stars Motorcyle riders: very useful accessory, but...
I planned buying it for mounting my e-Trex Venture on my motorcycle. None of the reviews here could help me in getting rid of my worry: will it fit in my handlebar? I assumed it will, so I purchased it. The result? PERFECT FIT. Using the thick rubber strap I could securely attach the handlebar mount and the GPS clicked-in in a snap. Naturally there's a lot less vibration on a street/road motorbike handlebar than that on a mountain bike, so that would not be a problem for me. I was wrong, since I noticed several times GPS suddenly turned off while riding. So be careful 'cause battery lid can actually provoke false electric contacts from time to time, turning the GPS off. I got through this by placing a thin piece of foam over the batteries which made the lid to close tighter and solved the problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did the job....
This adapter does exactly what I wanted it too:
1) Save the battery while I'm in the car.
2) Increase reception; the signal seems to be stronger when I've got my etrx plugged in.
3) Easy on, easy off. No problems whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and to the point
All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I'd forget about the power down), and I'd have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great, but its another wire!
This adapter is functional, is easy to use, enables continued use of backlight, and saves the batteries for walking with the eMap after arriving in a strange town. When I want to connect other media while driving with my family, I use a 12v 3-Outlet Car Power Adapter. Despite another wire, it's a worthwhile accessory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Accesory
If you don't want to spend a lot of money buying two separate accesories, you should try this one, is a bit bulky but that doesn't matter while you're driving.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works perfectly

4-0 out of 5 stars Functional and Well-Built
I regularly carry my eTrex GPS from vehicle to vehicle and connect it to my laptop everyday for downloading waypoints and track information. This cable makes it easy to utilize my etrex regardless of the environment. Best of all, the cable is sturdily made and looks like it will last for many more trips. This is also the only cable that will allow you to both power your GPS and connect it to a computer while in a vehicle, as must if you plan on using mapping software in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars USB is Possible
As a certified Computer Technician, I bought a Etrex to connect to a PC i have mounted in my truck, used to play music and display navigational software on a lcd screen. I found out that the software (along with many others) support a connection to a gps device, allowing the software to track your location real time on a map. Very handy, I just set the destination, and it tells me where to go! This cable allows battery free operation, and I hate buying expensive batteries! Although I do agree the cable could be longer, it functions, thus its handy to have. I would like to comment on the usb remarks. I have not tried this yet, but there is a usb to serial adapter available for PC's in need of an extra serial port. Cheers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great but designed wierd
The way this cable should have been made is with the Y connection near the cigarette lighter adapter instead of near the GPS. If the gps is placed on the dashboard, you have a cable stretched across your passenger seat to the laptop which gets in the way but I have used this cable and it works well.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a Crazy World
It is crazy how over-priced this cable really is. It is crazy that I actually bought it. If you don't mind the price, this cable is well made. I finally upgraded the firmware of my Geko 201 with this cable. BTW, the bootleg version of this cable costs almost as much, and probably costs more after you add the shipping cost. See what a crazy world we live in?

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin PC Interface Cable
This item is an absolute must for operating your GPS unit out in the field when connected to a computer of some sort. Simply relying on the Garmin GPS's internal batteries leaves you with only an eight hour window of operation while if the unit is attached to an external power source one can expect unlimited usage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but effective backcountry tool
Love the backcountry? For those of us who love the backcountry in Utah, this is an outstanding tool for the modern wilderness traveller. Combine this with a GPS and a large-format printer, and you've got the sweet system for customizing, then printing out maps you can use in the field. This has saved me SO MUCH MOOLA over buying (and wrecking) 2 or 3 quads for each weekend's adventures.

It's pretty simple. You can trace routes and add text annotations, measure the length of routes and construct an altitude profile; define a printer area and print it out. It works much better to drop the print output (Tiff) into Photoshop and adjust it for your printer. Printing on 8-1/2 x 11 paper doesn't get you much, but printing on 11 x 17 or 13 x 19 makes really nice maps. The Topo "Scan" is not as fine as it would be "really nice" to have, but is about the information you can see (unaided) on a standard Topo map.

Working with the Etrex GPS unit is easy. Mark waypoints on the computer, upload them to the handheld unit.

Overall, it works really well and is easy to learn and use. It requires a bit of an investment up front, but for the serious off-trail traveller, it is money well spent....

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I wanted to use TOPO to map the trails in the parks around South Eastern VA. by importing the GPS tracks obtained from walking/riding the trails. TOPO would almost do what I wanted, but its disappointing lack of editing and viewing tools made it impossible to accurately draw or display the routs.

If I import the tracks as individual waypoints, the waypoints are displayed as HUGE diamonds on the map that overlap and make it impossible to follow the track. The max zoom is insufficient to clearly display the tracks, but the magnify option zooms in nicely. The only problem is the magnify option also magnifies the waypoint icons, so they still overlap. For the Mid-Atlantic map, these waypoint diamonds are about 200 feet corner to corner.

If I bring the tracks in as complete routs, there is no way to make small changes to fit the track to the minor inconsistencies in the elevation map. For example, when the GPS shows me walking a mostly flat section and TOPO has me descending into a ravine; if I remember navigating around the edge of the ravine, it's obvious the track in that area needs to be tweaked to miss the ravine. I might be able to draw a new track if the lines of the existing track were a little thinner, but as with the waypoints, at max magnify the lines are very thick and obscure the topo lines. When I try to start a new track, the draw tool functions as a track selector over the existing (too thick) track, so I can't correct what is already there. The only option is to delete small sections of the map and try to redraw them from memory or a print out. This process might work, but I think I could do it a lot faster in a paint program.

There doesn't seem to be any way to turn off a waypoint or track display completely, since all the waypoints are ultimately displayed in the "All Waypoints" master list which won't turn off. Strangely, if I delete a waypoint in a custom rout, the waypoint is also deleted from the master list, so once a waypoint is added to a rout it can't be removed without also removing it from the entire map.

Overall it's a nice program and probably works fine for mapping out long, straight paths. It's useless for my purposes, though. They need to add some better editing and viewing features, such as interactive rout editing with drag handles on the waypoints, and some control over how and when the waypoints are displayed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Georgia version is terrible
The Georgia version of this set is Terrible. I already own National Park version which is great. I was planning on staying on Cumberland Island and doing some hiking and that National Park isn't on the National Park cd set, so I bought the Georgia set. Well, Cumberland Island is on the set but it only shows some of the trails. Parts of the Map are crooked. Some of it doesn't line up with other parts. It looks like it was scanned it from a bunch of seperate pieces of paper by a 8 yr old.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only afford one, buy national geographic's topos
I live in Idaho, and actually, really, go into the wilderness. The level of detail provided by garmin's u.s. topo offering is honestly not sufficient for accurately setting waypoints. National Geographic's state series is indeed sufficient (in fact it's the best for Idaho). Not to be cruel, but being able to download inadequately detailed map source is not nearly as important as being able to download truly accurate waypoints. Buying both packages would obviously be the best solution, but really you can set up all the detail you need (for getting in & out) using just national geographic (whereas you can't with garmin's u.s. topo stuff).

Critical note: I strongly recommend not carrying *just* electronic maps if you really, truly, go into wilderness. Electronic toys aren't foolproof - they break through no fault of your own, they get dropped, can get destroyed if you fall, etc. Paper maps should *also* be carried - ideally ones printed out just for your current trip.

The garmin hardware itself is truly impressive. Their mapsource topo offerings, on the other hand, need a lot of work. It's as if the people who did them never visited the U.S., and/or never really went into many of the U.S.'s real wilderness areas.

1-0 out of 5 stars National Geographic TOPO Colorado, Thumbs Down
The Colorado Map series does not display the same detail as a real 1/24000 official USGS map. I wonder which Colorado maps that National Geographic scanned? Hopefully I might be able to use the GPS and way points with my Garmin GPS 72, however the software setup does not list the Garmin GPS 72. I must have received last years version. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar.
Recently purchased a Garmin Talking Street Pilot III Colormap. The lighter adapter included with it has an integral speaker which I find to be quite satisfactory and very helpful when driving. You will no longer have to watch the GPS screen, as Ms. G gives you voice prompts (as long as you use the auto routing feature) when you need to make a turn, etc. If you need an adapter, get the model with the speaker!

1-0 out of 5 stars MISLED by James Steiner !!! please be responsible for review
be warned!!! don't believe James Steiner's review about this adapter working on eTrex!!!

nothing wrong with the item itself but, this product is NOT for eTrex series at all!!!! i kinda knew that by looking at its description, but the following review just misled me to the wrong way so now i have a headache to deal with when i got the Vista and the adapter that doesn't work on my GPS.

Reviewer: James Steiner (see more about me) from Oceanside, California USA
I use this with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Never worry about running out of batteries as I drive. Use away from home to track your travels. Cord is long and durable. Light lets you know if it is getting power.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cigarette power adapter for Garmin
I use this with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Never worry about running out of batteries as I drive. Use away from home to track your travels. Cord is long and durable. Light lets you know if it is getting power.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Auto Use
I use with my Mapsource 76S and this is a "must have" item for in-car use. On a trip of any length you are going to burn thru a lot of batteries. But, with this power cord you can turn the GPS on at the start of a trip and leave it on. Also the back light stays on all the time, which is necessary for car use at night. With batteries only the back light will auto turn off after a max of two minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's good
I don't know why or how a power cord deserves 5 stars, but there was nothing wrong with it. Perhaps one must assume that we are now on a five star scale, expecting perfection. If so, then it passes. Normally, I would give this 3 or 4 because it doesn't do anything except forward electrons into a handheld gps, yet it does it adequately enough to escape criticism. Do NOT expect it to entertain or mystify you, however, because it has 5 stars.

What one must now ponder is how to rate the truly exceptional items that not only perform without flaw, but also have some lagniappe that warrants more recognoition. Maybe that type of sentiment is something that can be found only in a review.

Perhaps Amazon could have a practicality/spartan scale and a sentimental/emotional/moral scale for artistry. ... Read more
