1-0 out of 5 stars When it works it's "like WOW". When does not. IT SUCKS!!
Yes the Zoom USB 3090 modem is a fine piece of crap in a small container when it comes to Hyperthreading CPU's. When it is hooked up and connected to the internet I get 50k+ bps connectivity almost everytime. But, whenever the line dies for whatever reason, you have three possible outcomes/solutions: 1) unplugged the little [item], and throw it across the room, which I have done numerous times out of shear frustration, or 2) reboot the computer, which have had to do nearly every time the little [item] quits a connection, and you forget to use the Microsoft "Safely Remove Hardware" utility available as a tray icon, or 3) hope that you remember to use the tray icon mentioned above, and that it actually works as sometimes the computer hangs onto the connnection and refuses to let it go, and you are again left to reboot the computer just to logon to the internet again. If you do get the tray icon to work, then you need to also unplug and plugin the USB connection each time to power down the modem -- the whole process is drag!

One would think that you should be able to logon and logoff the internet without having to reboot the computer nearly every damn time. The people at Zoom Telephonics do not seem to realize that they have a little [item] of a modem here, and they don't seem to care either. I was duped into buying this modem which does not mean you should either. Don't buy this one ever unless you like squeeze toys that you can throw across the room.

On second thought, I rescind the single star and post a null instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother!
I bought this modem after reading some positive reviews around the web (unfortunately I didn't read the reviews here). I heard a lot of people had problems with USR modems so I decided to go with this.

What a MISTAKE!

There are two Zoom 3049 v.92 modems out there. One is the 3049L (based on the Agere/Lucent chipset), and the other is the 3049C (the one I'm referring to) (based on the Conexant/Rockwell chipset). I just got the 3049, not knowing what was in the box. I wouldn't care, except that this modem is totally unreliable.

First, the one I got didn't come with a serial cable so be careful - some do and some don't. The serial cable cost another $15.

Second, the previous reviewer is absolutely correct - DON'T use this modem with WINXP and HT. The "real drivers" just crash WinXP upon installation. I emailed Zoom tech support, and they told me to get the beta drivers. These are beta drivers for Win NT and are grossly outdated, not supporting all of the v.92 features. They're beta, but they haven't been updated in a couple years. I tried them anyway. I connected at about 40k, and on special occasions, even 45k. Now I'm using the generic WinXP modem driver. It only supports v.90, but at least I can connect at speeds up to 49.2k.

Overall, connections are stable during good conditions, but when conditions get worse, it totally chokes. Sometimes it won't connect, connects at 23-31k, disconnects, or just stops downloading while remaining connected.

Could be my phone line. BUT, this is replacing an old v.90 (originally a 33.6k modem before upgrading driver) USR winmodem. I thought hardware-based modem would be better than a softmodem :( The old USR consistently connected at 50.6k though, and it could hold a connection better.

Doesn't look like the silly driver will ever be updated. If you're a gambling man/woman, give it a shot;)

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware if using with hyperthreading processor computers
If you buy this modem for the modem on hold feature (call waiting) be warned that this feature does not work in computers with Hyperthreading (HT) processors with windows XP. The drivers included will not work at all and you will have to install a beta driver available from Zoom's website to get the moden to work but without the call waiting capability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great!
I purchased this modem because it is controller based and it is not a WinModem. This means it works more efficiently with computers because it doesn't tax system resources. In addition, I'll be able to use this with Linux.

Installation went off without a hitch. I installed the drivers for Windows 98, rebooted, Windows recognized the modem and now I'm up and running.

Much easier than opening the case and installing a PCI card.

I'm connecting at 48k currently.

The new v.44 compression is excellent. I notice a significant difference in the downloading of web pages.

It's great. Looked at US Robotics & Creative. This seemed like the right one for me.

Enjoy! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars works, but not ideal
I got this product because my old faxmodem died and I needed something. It was the cheapest external I could find (and even cheaper with a rebate from Zoom).

Plusses:
- USB means you don't need an AC adapter (it supplies power as well as connectivity).
- No need to plug into a serial port.
- In my tests of FAXing and connecting via dialup, the modem works fine.

Minuses:
- See the little colored lights in the picture above? In the modem I got, these are replaced with pieces of opaque plastic that don't light up at all. I like seeing the lights -- helps me know what's going on. Sorry, no lights any more. Probably a cost-cutting measure.
- See the area where sound is supposed to come out of the speaker? Sorry, no speaker. Probably as another cost-cutting measure, the sound comes out of your PC speakers (and is rather loud even on the lowst L1 setting).
- Want to use it on Linux or Mac? Sorry, it's supported only under Windows.

As for the problems connecting that other people have experienced, I didn't see them. I think perhaps they have been resolved in current versions of the drivers.

The verdict? I'm keeping it because I rarely use a modem any more except for the occasional outgoing FAX (I'm on DSL). But without lights, a speaker and simple compatability with other systems, this is a modem I would pass up if I had to really rely on it all the time.

1-0 out of 5 stars can't stay connected!
What's the point of having a modem if it doesn't work properly? I haven't been able to stay connected to the internet. Looking at the connection signal at the bottom of the window, after about 30 seconds, the transfer signals are off. Shortly after I can disconnected. First I thought it was my computer or my ISP but I barrowed another modem and I stayed connected for hours!

5-0 out of 5 stars good
when i had just purchase this item it was good because i was running window 98 but now i had upgrade to window xp and it require for your computer to run 730mg and faster my computer only run 500mg. so if i want it to work again i would have to go back to window 98.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it zero stars if I could
I bought this modem to overcome terrible phone lines made worse by constant construction and HOW this modem made the top of a multi-unit comparison I'll never know. Since the day I installed it it's been non-stop frustration.

Even as late as 2002 the XP drivers for the modem--online or not--cause more trouble than they solve. Even at the highest speeds I can connect with, all I usually get are "Cannot Find Server" screens because of the transmission lag, despite Zoom's highly touted increase in speed with USB. 33,600 is somehow slower than 2,400 and there's just no excuse for that.

It's difficulty with XP is only surpseed by its obnoxious tech support whose sole piece of advice is always "reboot your computer," who are easily some of the rudest tech support operatives I've ever encountered. The whole experience with it has been far far more trouble than it's worth.

My recommendation is to avoid this product as if your life depended on it. If Zoom is your only recourse to solving connection difficulties, you're better off without the Internet in your life at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
After reading other reviews I was a bit sceptical about purchasing the Zoom 3090-00-00 external USB modem. But I went through with purchase and have had nothing but great success with the modem. I installed the drivers on my laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 8800, Win XP Home) and my PC (EMachines Tower 533id, Win 98SE). On both of the machines the connection speed is great (45 Kbps) even though I have a poor telephone line. Once I change out the old cable on my telephone line for a better one I should be getting a connection speed better than 50 Kbps. Just make sure to follow the instructions and the recommendations from other reviewers and you will not be disappointed. Also, make sure to use the driver for Win XP users that is available on the Zoom webpage and not the one on the CD that comes with the modem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much Happier
I wrote a review previous to this claiming to be a little disappointed. Well, Now I am elated! I sent the product back and they replaced it at no charge! I haven't experienced any more problems. Apparently it just had a flaw in that particular item. I recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot Connect
I have had no luck in getting the modem to work. It sets up ok and responds to AT commands until it is asked to dial. It immediately returns ERROR. I have worked with the vendor service desk for over a month. I have tried two Macintoshes and a PC. I've tried 3 different phone lines and paid the phone company to check the lines at my house. I have edited CCL files. I have had two engineers and a computer technician try. I have swapped the modems with other modems known to work and they all work fine, but the Zoom doesn't. Amazon's wonderful replacement policy replaced the first modem. The second modem does the same identical thing. I have spent too much time and money on something that is supposed to plug in and operate easily. I'll try something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
I ordered this product to give to my mother for mother's Day. She got it on time. Now As of June 13,2000 the modem is no longer working. It simply won't connect. There is some type of error and won't accept commands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't believe the improved performance!
Used to have a 3Com modem and a friend purchased the Zoom Mac modem and he always seemed to connect at 50K while I was only connecting at a substantially lower rate. Since we had the same ISP, I knew it had to be the modem. Bought the Zoom last week and am very impressed with the improved performance. Highly Reccommend! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Zoom Adsl Confusing to Set up, but woth it
My Bellsouth-supplied DSL noden, an Alcatel, went on the brink after 2 years. I bought the Zoom ADSL USB modem. It took me about six hours of trial and error to get the right protocols to get on and surf. The problem is not so much the software as finding the protocols. The 'normal' USA protocol 'PPPOE" did not work. Unfortunately, Bellsouth only supports 2 modems, and could not tell me the setup for any Zoom. PDF documents at Bellsouth and Zoom were not helpful. I finally found some hints in a DSL Reports forum.
The modem is working fine now. It is small and can be placed anywhere around the computer, and speed (941/218, out of max 1500/256) is good.
For the price, it is an excellent buy. ... Read more

Product Description

The Zoom Dialer 27 is used for hot line applications and for controlling the calls which can be made from a phone line. Patented technology allows a single dialer to control the numbers which are dialed by all of the phones or extensions on a line. In hot line mode the dialer will respond to one of four installer-designated triggers and will always dial a single phone number. Trigger options include: dialing after a dialtone of a programmable duration (one to ten seconds) is detected, dialing immediately after dialtone is detected, dialing after the first digit of the phone number remains pressed for one second, and dialing upon receiving power. With the power trigger, a Model 27 can be used to dial a phone number for remote sensing applications. Applications for the hot line dialer include replacement of leased lines or ring down lines, convenient customer service calling, and elevator help line installations. As a toll restriction device, the Model 27 can block up to 350 designated area codes, area codes with central office codes, international codes, or complete phone numbers. The Model 27 can be programmed to both restrict designated numbers and also dial a hot line number if a caller does not input a Touchtone after a pre-set period of time. Applications for the Model 27 as a toll restrictor include: 900 number blocking, toll call control for rental properties, directory assistance blocking, and convenience phones for public waiting areas. The Model 27 is programmed with any Touchtone phone on the same line as the dialer. Reprogramming can be password restricted. ... Read more
