Great Quality, excellent product Except the Remote Control
I am not an audio expert but really liked the quality and features for both the receiver and the progressive scan DVD player. Speakers are good too. Some problems that I noticed during setup are:

1. For some reason the Yamaha Universal remote control that comes with 5540 AV receiver does not seem to control the Yamaha's own high end DVD player that came with YHT-800!! In fact, I had no problem programming Samsung DVD player with the Yamaha receiver.
2. The remote also does not work with Echostar (webtv) DishPlayer satellite decoder. So, I have to use three remotes - one for receiver, one for DVD and one for satellite box. The overall remote design is good though.
3. The s-video input signal on 5550 receiver only seems to work with Yamaha DVD. Worse even, it appears that you either need to connect all video components to S-video mode or all of them to RCA composite mode for Video-out-to-Monitor to work. My VCR has no S-video out. Hence, I had to use all RCA jacks and miss out on using high quality video output from my DVD and DBS box.

Overall, I like the YHT-800 system and hope to resolve remote control issues with Yamaha tech support. I hope I don't need to buy $150 learning remote from Yamaha. ... Read more

Yamaha does it again
My second Yamaha receiver. Tried Panasonic , Pioneer and came running back. Its the crystal clear sound that makes Yamaha the king !

Great Receiver
This is great receiver for those who are just getting into home theater systems. Good power to 6 channels. Lots of DSP presets. Easy settings at least for me that is. Lots of inputs and outputs. It comes with an easy to use universal remote too.

fast, reliable burns
Yamaha has one of the best reputations for making SCSI CDRW's. I've had my 8424 CDRW for about 6 months now and it has always performed reliably. At 8x, 650MB CD's can be burned within 9 minutes, which is fast enough for all my needs. You can find faster CDRW's out there (Yamaha makes a 16x one), but consider the price difference and the few minutes you would save per CD.

I needed an external unit because I am using this device with a Apple laptop. It is very easy to use. The unit came with Adaptec Toast 4 (light version) software, which can burn both data and music and is user-friendly. I wish the Toast software were the deluxe version, which has more capabilities (like recording in a PC-compatible format). Maybe Adaptec did not want that (most CDRW brands only include the light version).

It also included Neato CD-labeling kit, which is very useful for printing out and applying labels/designs on the CD's. This is a valuable addition.

The external case is well-built, pleasant-looking, and reasonably quiet. It does have two fans to cool the CD mechanism inside, but this produces just as much sound as most fans inside the computers the unit would attach to. One important thing to note is that this CDRW does not come with a SCSI cable or adapter, you'll have to purchase one separately. Make sure you find the right one for your computer, since there are many shapes of SCSI ports.

This product is the best investment for my computer to date. Installation is a snap, literally; just plug the SCSI card into an empty PCI port, connect the cable to the Yamaha CDRW & boot up your system. It's that simple. The drive is extremely FAST and it performs flawlessly. It also comes with a generous 4mb buffer that you can update at the Yamaha web site. The software is by far the best on the market, allowing you to create your own music CD's or back up your entire hard drive, just drag and drop or select the folder and click add. Extremely easy to operate, not one problem yet. Highly Recommend!

Great Product
I bought this for my wife. This is most certainly a great product. I do agree however, that the keys are not as weighted as they should be. My wife mentioned that they feel as though they spring back unlike a standard piano.

Great Instrument!!
A terrific instrument, pound for pound, than any out there for sale. With 88 keys, educational software, many voices, etc. there's nothing better for the money plus you get Yamaha quality.

Great value
I was looking for something I could put in my little apartment and be able to move if and when I had to, and I could afford. My girlfriend/roommate was a music major, and thus very picky about the way an instrument feels and sounds. We had our musical choices narrowed down to this keyboard and a digital piano. After playing this instrument in the store, we decided that for the money, you just can't beat it.
This unit runs about half the price of a digital keyboard, and while I agree that the weighting of the keys is not very significant (hence 4 stars out of 5), the sound I think is outstanding. Not only the grand piano sound, but also a good percentage of the voices (out of 614, of course a few of them are subpar).
On top of all this, the lesson feature is wonderful. I don't know how to play piano or read music or anything, but the lesson feature teaches you how to play any of the 100 songs pre-programmed into the keyboard. I've only had it about 3 days, and I'm learning a lot faster than I would have thought.
So if you're looking for an extremely versatile instrument that won't break your bank, this is definitely for you. If you want something that plays just like a piano, then buy a piano. But I can't recommend this product enough.

Excellent keyboard with a few minor flaws
I had been looking for a piano for about 17 months when I ran across this model, purely by chance, at my local electronics store. I'd been rather frustrated trying to find a keyboard that approximated the look and feel of a real piano and had all 88 keys on it. A real piano for me was out of the question, since I live in an upstairs unit (no elevator) with a tight corner turn to get into the door, and neither me nor my wife could move something so large.

I tell you that you will not get a better deal anywhere than what this model has to offer. Not only does this model have all 88 keys, but the piano sound quality is absolutely outstanding. The rest of the voices...drums, winds, electronic piano, and rhythm sequences (plus hundreds more), all sound realistic enough to provide an excellent mix of sounds for recording. I have no trouble with the various other functions I discovered while playing with this keyboard...chord lessons, music dictionary, rhythm setting, or music database activation. This is an absolutely MARVELOUS keyboard for the price and is great whether you are a beginner just learning or an advanced synth player.

Now the reason it has 4 stars instead of 5. First, I must agree with the reviews I see here that the keys are not as weighted as they could be. Second, the main piano sound, although excellent, is just a bit too soft. I found I had to turn the volume up to 3/4 of max to hear a good semblance of a grand piano sound. This wouldn't be a problem, except the auto-accompaniment will drown out the piano melody if you turn it on, and adjusting the accompaniment volume is a minor pain because it reverts back to its default setting when you turn the unit off. Finally, the pedal included with this keyboard tends to go slightly awry at times because it is not like your typical piano pedal. When I tried to use it, my foot slipped off it occasionally...although that might be because I have a carpet and not a hard floor where the pedal is.

However, buying an extra speaker and a new piano pedal, both readily available from Yamaha, corrected both problems amazingly well. Once I added those, I had as close to a perfect instrument as you could ever hope to have. Now if only I could weight those keys somehow...

Overall, a unit I highly recommend and an excellent buy.

A great keyboard for almost everyone
Yamaha has made an excellent product, here.

I will grant, right away, that if you compare the sound and feel of this keyboard to a REAL piano or even a keyboard that costs two or three times as much, you will be disappointed.

HOWEVER, given that the price point on this item is what it is, there's lots to be excited about.

The keys are weighted -- not as heavily as a real piano, but they feel MUCH meatier than the lower-end models in this product line (the DGX202 and the DGX300). The fact that the keys are not fully weighted cost the keyboard a half of a star on my rating.

The grand piano voice is outstanding. I'm sure you would be able to tell the difference between it and a real grand piano, but it is still an excellent sound.

The piano voice is the most important, naturally, but there are other voices that are very rich sounding as well - there's a great electric piano, some good synth sounds, an amazing flute, and even some good organs (though still nothing quite like a B3).

The sequencing function seems very intuitive and adequate, though I'm sure you have more options if you get Yamaha's XG Works software (for an extra cost) and a MIDI connection to your PC. This cost the keyboard the other half-star that brought it down from from 5 stars to 4.

The bottom line is this -- if you have lots more money to spend than this item costs, it's worth it to check out higher-priced models and compare them to the DGX500, but if you've only got enough to afford the DGX500, I don't believe you'll be disappointed in this keyboard at all.

Yamaha's EZ30AD portable keyboard is geared for the beginning musician. It's easy to use, powerful, inexpensive, and educational. With 600 different sounds, 100 accompaniment styles, 200 songs, a built-in sequencer, and guided piano lessons, the EZ30AD comes loaded with as many features as a new car.

The 600 sounds range from pianos to clarinets to drums to special effects. The EZ30AD is a General MIDI compatible keyboard, which means that when it's connected to a computer--via the MIDI ports using MIDI cables (sold separately)--the EZ30AD will correctly play General MIDI files (a standard of most MIDI files in educational software and of those available on the Internet).

Add an accompaniment to the sound that you are already playing, and you immediately have a whole band at you fingertips. The EZ30AD can supply drums, bass, chords, and other instruments, freeing you to be the star musician of the group. The sequencer allows you to record your song. It works very much like a multitrack cassette recorder. You can first record one instrument--a bass, for instance. Then add another instrument, such as a guitar, while you're listening to your first track. If the guitar track is not quite right, then you can record it again without changing the bass part. The sequencer is a great tool; however, you can only save up to five songs on the keyboard.

The 200 songs are fun to listen to, but the EZ30AD also wants you to learn how to play them. There are three lesson types on the EZ30AD: timing, waiting, and minus one. All lessons can be done with left hand alone, right hand alone, or both hands together. In the timing lesson, the song plays and the student presses any note in the proper time. In the waiting lesson, the EZ30AD holds theaccompaniment until the student plays the correct notes. In the minus one lesson, the student plays the proper notes in the correct time. An evaluation function gives a grade for each lesson.

Colored lights above the keys and a staff display will help the student identify the correct keys. A dictionary function shows the student chord types on the keyboard and on the display staff. All these educational activities are very entertaining, and by doing them, the student will pick up rudimentary skills that may help in the further study of music.

The keys on the EZ30AD feel a little flimsy, so try not to play them too hard. The keys are also touch sensitive, which means that the harder you strike the key, the louder it will sound. Touch-sensitivity allows for greater control over how your music sounds.

The EZ30AD is lightweight, yet it has speakers built in, so you don't have to get an amplifier. A built-in headphone jack lets you keep your musical mistakes to yourself. It is hard to find many downsides with the EZ30AD.

If you become more serious about music, you will probably want more keys than the 61 on the EZ30AD, and you will want more sounds. (You can never have enough sounds!) If you really want to use the built-in sequencer, you'll find the five-song memory limiting. A keyboard like the href="/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YAHG/${0}">Yamaha PSR-340 has a sequencer and the ability to store songs on a floppy disk.

Makes it fun to learn!
I really like the Yamaha EZ30! It makes it fun to learn how to play the paino. I also bought a book to learn how to play. I started with the book first, slowly playing things like "Jingle Bells" and "Tom Dooley".

After a couple hours with the book, I was looking through the songs included on the EZ30. One of them was the Peanuts theme, which I've always wanted to learn.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to play with the help of Yamaha's YES3 technology. After only 15-30 minutes I was able to keep up a decent tempo and it sounded great with all the background music.

If you've ever dreamed of learning to play the paino like I did, order this product and start playing --you'll love it!

A Beginners Dream Come True!
The EZ30 is without a doubt the best keyboard choice whether
you're a beginner or an experienced player. Benefits for
the beginning player include the guidelights, which allow
you to play any of the programmed songs right out of the
box, which is highly gratifying; and the YES 3 system.

The YES 3 teaching system is the real deal. FINALLY a
sorely needed training tool - using both hands together.
YES 2 and most other keyboard brands teach right hand
and left hand parts, and leave it to the student to
put them together. That's horrendously frustrating.
This keyboard teaches right hand, left hand, and then
both hands together, which makes this teaching system
complete and very easy.

Other keyboards I tried prior to this purchases were the
PSR280 and the Casio Magic Light Keyboard. The Casio is
fun and easy, but the quality of the sounds (voices) are
not good. It sounds like squeezing a goat. The piano
voice is fine though, and the keyboard is fun, but not

for anyone with the need for seriously clean/true sounds.
The Casio also only teaches RH/LH, but not both together.

The PSR280 is a fine keyboard, but not for a beginner.
The tiny LCD display will not be of any help, unless you
enjoy being frustrated. The YES 2 system is difficult, and
again only teaches RH/LH, but not both together.
If you're an experienced player, you'll find the sound quality
to be superior, as the Yamaha can be depended on for that.

The EZ30 guidelights can be turned off easily, if you
don't need them or want them on. It is also Midi
compatible, which opens the world to you regarding
choices of songs you want to add. You will need to
purchase a cable and software seperately, but having
done so, ANY midi song can then be played on the EZ30
and will light up for you as well. What more can you
ask? It really has it all.

For the more experienced player, there are a large
variety of voices and options available to be able to
compose to your hearts delight, giving your creativity
free reign. It does have a build in mixer/recorder,
and other memory functions.

In short, this keyboard can be as easy as pie for a
beginner, or as sophisticated as the user needs it to be.
The sound quality is excellent. It comes with a music
book and the AC adapter. You simply can't go wrong with
this keyboard.

WOW! I can play!!!
Amazing keyboard from Yamaha. I have always wanted to play the piano and now with this, I just follow the lights and I'm actually playing the 100 demo songs. And I can download my favorite MIDI songs from the NET and the lights work with them 2. This keyboard also has 600+ other musical instrument voices to use and I'm now thinking of going out to a local lounge and make some extra $$$ on the weekends. LOL! And I just discovered the 6 track recording studio feature included in the keyboard so I can record my tunes. A convenient Stand
Functional stand comes in pieces which are easily assembled in about 5 minutes with the allen wrench provided in the hardware kit. It is more sturdy than you might think - which was a concern of mine since there are small children in the home. It does not tip easily thanks to nice wide feet - and they have rubber caps that won't scratch the floor either. The stand is adjustable in height - but that feature is for adults to have the option of sitting or standing. It does not go as low as I would like for my 8-year-old daughter to play comfortably, so we have to put a couple of cushions on her chair to get her up to the right height - or at least until I go the extra dollar to buy a piano stool. All in all a very nice, sturdy and functional stand.
