Amazon.com Product Description

High convenience and high quality doesn't have to mean "high ticket." Yamaha's HTR-5650 is loaded with features and exclusive Yamaha technologies. Easy to set up and operate, the receiver can power two rooms at once (one in surround sound, the other in stereo), and it offers the convenience of DVD-Audio/multichannel SACD-ready six-channel analog inputs alongside the latest 6.1-channel surround processing.

When hooked up with the digital-audio output from a DVD-Video player or digital satellite receiver, the 80 watts-per-channel HTR-5650 (95 wpc peak) handles 5.1-channel surround decoding for both major formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. In addition, the HTR-5650 also processes Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES, which create an even more expansive soundfield through the use of a center-rear surround channel, totaling six discrete full-range channels in addition to the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel: left, center, right, and left, center, and right surround.

Exclusive Yamaha technologies include Quad-Field Cinema DSP (based on a wealth of measured data in real studios and halls, this processing is designed to highlight the full potential of movie sound mixes), Silent Cinema (which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary stereo headphones, not included), and the company's YSS-938 32-bit DSP chip providing 25 unique surround algorithms with 44 variations to help you perfectly match your simulated acoustic space to your video program.

Non-Dolby Digital and DTS sources can benefit from surround processing, too--with enhanced directional steering over standard four-channel Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source--whether that's a TV broadcast, VHS tapes, or your favorite CDs, cassettes, and LPs. Pro Logic II delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels with 40 dB of left-right separation.

And, when you're listening to multichannel presentations late at night, you'll appreciate Silent Cinema, which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary stereo headphones (not included). Silent Cinema uses unique parameters for each soundfield to ensure accurate headphone representations of each soundfield.

Then there's the six-channel DVD-Audio/SACD-ready inputs mentioned above. If these formats are so high-tech, you might wonder, why do you need analog inputs to appreciate them? Because, for reasons of content protection, DVD-Audio and SACD players perform their own digital-to-analog conversion, passing high-resolution analog, rather than digital, signals on to your amplifier. (And analog, after all, is what your amp feeds your speakers.)

The versatile unit offers nine video input connections (with three S-video inputs and two high-resolution component-video inputs), four fixed and assignable digital-audio inputs (great for DVD, DSS, CD, laserdisc, gaming consoles, or minidisc), and front-panel input connections for your camcorder or other spontaneous hookup. The HTR-5650 comes with a preset remote control.

Last, but certainly not least, the HTR-5650 benefits from Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) build philosophy. ToP-ART's goal is to maximize digital quality while minimizing analog circuitry. The culmination of the best digital engineering and design possible, it brings together several key elements to create the best-sounding, easiest-to-use A/V components available.

I truly love this receiver. One of the things that initially attracted me to it was the 480 watts of power. I couldn't wait to take it home and see how my CD's and DVD's sounded on it. What amazed me was not only the really great bass responce, but the clearity. I watched my Phil Collins DVD and it was like I was actually there in front of the stage. For the first time I really feel like I now know how the artists truly sound. I can honestly say, I know I got my money's worth with this receiver! Thank you Yamaha! Jess ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

It sounds like a dream of the future: all the music in your household stored efficiently on a central server and then called, as desired, to individual rooms through elegant--and completely independent--microsystems. Yamaha's MusicCAST system makes that dream a reality, and the MCX-1000 digital audio server is the foundation of the MusicCAST system.

Learn about the MusicCAST system in detail
The MCX-1000 stores music and broadcasts it wirelessly to one or more specially designed microsystem receiver in your house. Each receiver system (or "client") consists of the Yamaha MCX-A10 digital audio terminal coupled with any pair of stereo loudspeakers, or Yamaha's matching, stylish MCX-SP10. Using a multiclient system, all members of a home can store their music in a central location, create playlists, custom CDs, and digital sound files from vintage vinyl records, and wirelessly transmit them anywhere in the house.

Capable of storing around 1,000 CDs (using MP3 compression at a very listenable 160 kbps), the MCX-1000's self-contained 80 GB hard drive provides instant access to a vast array of your favorite music. The server's bits are yours to configure: save your music in CD-quality linear PCM digital audio (it'll hold an impressive 133 hours of CD-quality audio) or convert it internally to MP3 at rates of 160, 256, or 320 kbps. The server has its own disc drive--which records CDs as well as playing them--and analog and digital external audio inputs in case you want to load material from LPs, cassettes, or other sources.

The MCX-1000 features a user friendly interface.
Equipped with IEEE 802.11b network technology, the MCX-1000 can serve up to five clients wirelessly, and wired Ethernet connections can extended client range as well as number. The server can send music to eight different locations including the server's, letting you use up to seven independent MCX-A10 terminals with one MCX-1000. Each client terminal comes with a graphical user interface and its own remote control, with which you can build custom playlists for artist, occasion, or anything else you can think of.

The versatile built-in CD recorder lets you save your music to the server at lightning-fast speeds, create your own CD compilations, or simply play your collections of MP3 CDs. The device supports multiple bit rates in addition to variable-bit-rate (VBR) MP3 files.

Storing from CD to the hard drive is easy and fully automated. Once a disc is loaded, a music-recognition database provided by Gracenote CDDB will bring up all the information associated with that disc, such as artist, album, track names, and even musical genre. Press "start" and the server will add the album to the library with nothing left for you to do but sit back and enjoy it. With Internet access (via an optional broadband router), the system is designed to let you obtain the latest CD recognition data from a Gracenote CDDB Server.

Hook up your broadband connection with the built-in Ethernet port. Display the server's onscreen menu on a TV or monitor with S-video or composite inputs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another TIVO
I can't say enough about this product. I liken this to the enthusiasm most have with Tivo. I bought it last summer when it first shipped. My first one did have a hard drive problem after a couple of days but Yamaha was incredibly responsive and shipped me a brand new one overnight. I was actually very surprised at how easy it was to "get going"....less than 15 minutes including loading my first CD to the hard drive.
Using it is also so straightforward that my kids were able to use it after only a couple of minutes of coaching...they all have their own playlists now which they just love. I actually moved out of my house for a remodel project and set it up in the temporary housing without incident. Also I've gone through one product firmware upgrade and the addition of one "client" also without incident. I have two "clients" in the house and they kids love the ability to play their playlists at the same time in two different rooms.
A couple of things to note...you really need a TV monitor hooked to the server to effectively navigate the menus to do anything more than "play" or "record" (which most people will likely do anyway). Also be aware of the "recording" and "burning" rules/constraints before buying so your expectations are set appropriately if you like to "burn" playlists to CD's for use on portable devices.

5-0 out of 5 stars very nice product
I bought one of the MusicCast systems as soon as it was available (after drooling over it at a couple of trade shows). The first thing I did was upgrade the harddrive to 200GB. Required a trip by my dealer to my house, but it gave me much more capacity. The interface is very intuitive. It's very fast at copying from cd to the internal disk. In the background, it converts from PCM to whatever MP3 compression level you've set for default (I always use 320KB). You can remove the PCM version to save space (I keep it for critical listening stuff, but my wife doesn't care, so her PCM's are deleted immediately :-) I have a couple of the MCX-A10 terminals scattered around the house. I've had them connect through ethernet and wireless and seems to work fine for both. Yamaha just released a software update that allows access to the MusicCast database through a web browser. This makes it very easy to fix titles, artists, etc. (You can plug a keyboard into the MusicCast, but it requires powering down which is too much trouble for me). I have to say that the most annoying thing about the MusicCast is the GraceNote CDDB database. Yamaha's implementation is great. The CDDB database is a mess. Album titles are inconistent, misspelled, etc. That's why having the browser editing is such a big deal to me. The best endorsement I can give is that my wife really likes the MusicCast. She was sceptical, but after seeing how it works and being able to browse her music, she's sold. Highly recommended for anyone who just wants to be able to enjoy their music without having to deal with PC's. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Now you can groove to your favorite tunes, rain or shine. Yamaha's NS-AW350 bookshelf speakers are perfect for deck or porch placement, delivering punchy bass and even, extended treble in just about any desired location. You can bring them in during the cold months and set them up indoors, too: their high build quality and good sound lend them equally well to two-channel indoor listening.

The speakers, which are sold as a pair, each use a 6.5-inch high-compliance, polypropylene, mica-filled woofer and 1-inch PEI dome tweeter. The drivers are optimized for high rigidity but low mass, giving them high sensitivity (87 dB with 2.83V at 1 meter), another way of saying they're easily driven by modest amplifiers. Their acoustic-suspension cabinets are sealed to prevent undue resonance or tubby, tuneless bass, which often results from low-cost ported designs.

With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, the speakers will work nicely with amplifiers up to 40 watts per channel, nominal, or 130 watts, peak power. They boast a frequency response of 55 to 40,000 Hz (+/-3 dB), giving you reasonably full bass for their size and unusually extended high-frequency response for your most demanding digital media.

The speakers are magnetically shielded, so you can place them on or near a TV or video monitor without fear of picture degradation from their magnetic fields. Five-way binding posts simplify connection with several different terminations of speaker cable (including banana plugs), and the NS-AW350s even come with two lengths of cable to get you started.

While you wouldn't want to leave the speakers exposed on, say, the deck of a boat, they are water resistant and designed to withstand light wind and rain--a benefit of their sealed enclosures and rugged metal grilles. The speakers come with mounting bases and brackets.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Intermediate Drummers:
I purchased this product about a month ago and I am very pleased with it. The features are amazing and I love the fine tuning details. I've read other reviews that only comment on bad sound quality, but I consider the sound quality to be amazing. Although you can't expect much out of the unit's speakers, headphones or other external sound systems (such as amps) make the sound quality amazing (the speakers are great for practicing though). I've also read that people are unhappy with the low volume of the crash speakers. I addressed this problem by lowering the volume of all the pads except the cymbals, and then just raise the main volume. Many people think that this kit would not be good for a stand alone performance kit. I whole-heartedly agree. That's why I made a set up with my real hi-hat, and my bass drum, and put the dd-55 in the middle. I've played in two concerts like this and it has been a hit. I changed the hi-hat pad into a china cymbal (or a ride bell). I put a splash on the hi-hat pedal and a cowbell (or anything else you want) on the bass pedal. This setup worked great. I also figured out a way to rig the bass pedal so you could hit it with a real bass pedal. In one of the songs, I threw away my sticks and started to play the bongos! Everyone loved it! I'm glad Yamaha made such an affordable proffesional quality drum pad set and I'm sad when I see that most people can't use it to it's fullest potencial!

5-0 out of 5 stars This drum system cannot be beat!
As a solo artist and song writer, I depend on this piece of equipment almost as much as my guitars. I've recorded 4 succesful albums using the Yamaha DD-55 and it has never let me down. It's simple to use, durable, and dependable. Don't buy a cheap drum machine from Radio Shack if youare serious about your music, invest some money and you'll see the investment pay off as you start cutting tracks. It's the next best thing to a live drummer in the studio.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 reasons I like this drum set
1) Perfect for practice. As a non-drummer, buying a full acoustic or digital drumset is too much of a commitment. This little digital set gives a good simulation of the feel of a full kit (with some limitations) for learning new rhythms. Someday I'll buy a full kit but for now this guy will do.

2) Jamming. Sitting around with some friends and some guitars, it is really nice to pull out some backing drum sounds quickly and painlessly. The hand drum sounds are excellent as well for this.

3) Recording MIDI. This guy goes MIDI out to the computer for recording MIDI events and playing them back with the sound card's drumset or anything else you want. As a MIDI drum controller it is very handy. I have also recorded the on-board drum sounds (run through a guitar amp with mild distortion and reverb) and the results were pretty cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This drummer thinks it's cool
I'm a drummer in a 5-piece band that plays 2 or 3 times a month. I recently had the opportunity to try out the DD55 and was very impressed. Though I'm not ready to show up at a gig without my conventional set, the DD55 would be great for practicing with headphones or for taking to a rehearsal when I don't want to lug my set. It has a nice feel to it, the sound is good, there are lots of options, and it's just plain fun. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like some of the electronic drums do. ... Read more

You can bring them in during the cold months and set them up indoors, too: their high build quality and good sound lend them equally well to two-channel indoor listening.

The speakers, which are sold as a pair, each use a 6.5-inch high-compliance, polypropylene, mica-filled woofer and .5-inch PEI dome tweeter. The drivers are optimized for high rigidity but low mass, giving them reasonably high sensitivity (80 dB with 2.83V at 1 meter), another way of saying modest amplifiers won't have much trouble driving them. Their acoustic-suspension cabinets are sealed to prevent undue resonance or tubby, tuneless bass, which often results from low-cost ported designs.

With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, the speakers will work nicely with amplifiers up to 35 watts per channel, nominal, or 120 watts, peak power. They boast a frequency response of 80 to 40,000 Hz (+/-3 dB), giving you decent bass output for their compact size and unusually extended high-frequency response for your most demanding digital media. For indoor use, you may want to augment their performance with a subwoofer to deliver deeper and more powerful bass; be sure to select one with a variable crossover so you can tailor its upper frequency to effectively "take over" at the point of the NS-AW150s' lowest deliverable frequency.

A two-channel device capable of decoding Dolby Digital as well as DTS (Digital Theater System) surround signals, the DP-U50's Virtual Surround capability simulates multichannel sound in installations where multiple speakers are not practical.

Note, however, that the DP-U50 does not contain an amplifier. To get sound you'll need either an outboard amp with a pair of speakers or a pair of active speakers with onboard amplification.

Yamaha provides a fairly generous set of hookup options, including USB, three sets of stereo RCA analog inputs, two optical digital-audio inputs, one coaxial digital-audio input, stereo preamplifier outputs, a subwoofer output, one optical digital-audio output, and a front-panel headphone jack that simulates surround in stereo headphones.

Although you can hook it up to your PC or Mac using analog audio cables, you'll surely want to take advantage of the advanced features available through the DP-U50's USB port. Simply download the System Application software with the supplied CD-ROM to adjust DSP parameters, Virtual 3-D effects, dynamic range, the seven-band graphic equalizer, and a lot more right from your computer. Yamaha also supplies a remote control, but we prefer computer or manual control, given that the unit will likely be just an arm's length away.

The DP-U50 is handsome and well built. Its vertical chassis is finished in an elegant, beaded silver with four input-selector buttons at the top, a small display window in the middle, and an oversized volume knob--for adjusting the volume of active speakers or headphones--down below. (Even though its vertical chassis takes up relatively minimal space on your desktop, by the time you add an amplifier and a pair of speakers you've devoted a lot of valuable real estate to a sound system. Like we said, this rig is for serious enthusiasts.)

Matching the DP-U50 with good speakers and amplification brought an astonishing sonic improvement over the relatively decent outboard speakers that came with our Mac G4 Cube. Never before have music CDs been so wonderful an accompaniment to work, so much cleaner, fuller, and more detailed than they are with this system--and a subwoofer makes it even better. And though we're not often impressed by virtual surround simulation, we must admit that the DP-U50's DSP makes games and DVD movies a lot more fun.

The only drawback we see to this unit comes from the existence of Yamaha's AP-U70 personal amplifier, which offers everything you get here, plus amplification (saving you a step, but costing you a little, too). Whichever way you go, the investment in a computer sound system of this quality is substantial. And, thankfully, so are the rewards. --Wayne Garcia

4-0 out of 5 stars Here is a way to improve PC sound
First of all, it looks sophisticated on your desk, and indeed improves the sound unless you have upgraded your soundcard already. Even so, Yamaha gives us effects (Europe concert hall, Jazz club, church, etc) and they really do make a difference!

The sound is not audiophile smooth, but the soundstage is pretty deep and wide. It is also clear and free from un- pleasant coloration.

You can also use this to put effects on any system between a CD player and an amp or a receiver. Worth the money and does what it saids it will do. I got mine for only $50 - check the web for a sale.

There are many other ways of connecting a computer to a stereo to improve the sound now - one is a product called Xitel (on ebay). Another way is through Phillips Mini systems like this one :

http://www.smartbargains.com/prod.aspx?s=SE1&ev=0&evn=&deptId=2&catId=5&prodId=2010223647

This Phillips sounds sweet! It's a new technology and sets new standard in price/performance ratio - The digital amp. It's creating a buzz among audiophiles - many are buying it for a bed room or a gym.

Yamaha does give you more flexibility in effects - from a computer. Yamaha also makes upscale one with an amp built in, though not that powerful - RPU-100. You can get it for less on Amazon now! (Beginnig of 2004).

You just have to add a nice bookshelf and it would beat most computer speakers. You can also add a sub (yamaha has a sub out)

This is a good product since the web is full of mp3 music, and it's a pity to play it on small computer speakers. If you are a music lover, and have accumulated a sizeable mp3 library, you will be amply rewarded to get this to connect it to an amp and speakers.

3-0 out of 5 stars cool but not cool enough
its a cool toy and it sounds pretty good. however for the price it's a little lacking. However this would be an option for someone that has a space saver or a laptop, ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The DGX300AD is the second in Yamaha's top-of-the-line Portable Grand series. This keyboard has 76 piano-size keys, 619 voices, and contains pretty much every other function available on any other Yamaha keyboard, including Yamaha Educational Suite, lots of auto-accompaniments, and a built-in sequencer and built-in floppy drive. This keyboard is tremendously easy to use, despite many complicated features. It's portable, and will keep novice and advanced musicians busy playing and creating music for a long time.

In our opinion, the sound quality from the speakers is not as good as the DGX200AD. We found the quality of the speakers on the DGX300AD on the weaker side, with the treble frequencies not as strong as the lower frequencies. The actual keys on the DGX300AD are more like piano keys than on lower-end keyboards. While still far off from feeling like real piano keys (there is not much "weight" or resistance to them at all), the keys are nice to the touch.

If having a built-in floppy drive is not as important to you, we would recommend going for the DGX200AD. It also has 76 keys, but they are not the piano-sized keys. If you are interested in a full-size keyboard (88 keys), you may want to look at the DGX500AD. Overall, the DGX300AD is a full-featured keyboard with a budget-friendly price--perfect for learning and music making. --Chris Fresolone

5-0 out of 5 stars A great piano for an even greater price!
Designed for beginners and professionals alike, the DGX-300 combines musical technicality with an outstanding price of under $500. This unit with 76 keys, has more than enough for the complex player, yet offers built-in learning programs for the beginning hobbyist. I love my DGX-300, and I love it's amazing rich piano sound. I was worried at first when I began shopping for a keyboard. I wanted something that wouldn't sound like a fake plastic paino. This machine actually senses your stress on the keys, and sounds exactly like a concert grand. It's absolutely amazing. I was also very impressed with the sound quality, as it was also amazing. The speaker reviews should not at all be a factor in the purchase of this unit. For this price, and the Yamaha name, you're not going to find an instrument as great as this.

5-0 out of 5 stars My key is on the board
Someday I will be a master player... These keyboards are just amazing! I love to play with these! There hundrends of special options ans sounds. Beginner can learn easily to play with Yamaha keyboards because you can use teaching program and see on the blue screen, which key you are touching. There are five memory places that you can make your own songs and save them. If you are bored to play normal piano sound, you'll try other sounds for exemple harpcicord, bass, heavy quitar, gun, dog barking or helicopter tunes. There are many vital buttons: metronome(choose your own personal playing speed), touch-sensitive( you can play quiet and loud because your hands will control how hard you press the keys) and pc-portable( you can make music with computer and make your own remixes) Yamaha keyboards are a great choose to buy if you are planning to start a new hobby!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yamaha DGX300 for Home Use
I am very pleased with the quality and layout of this board. Prior to purchasing I read less than favorable results on the sound quality. My unit sounds great through the speakers and even better through headphones or amplified. This should not be a limiting factor on your decision. The 76 keys are great, the sounds are exceptional. While there are drum tracks and every percussion sound imaginable, I would prefer to have a drum kit built in to add greater flexibility. Most of the music and sound databases are from the 40's - 60's, old time favorites, etc. Would prefer to have something with more modern appeal. You can download and upload from disk so maybe this is the go round. Too early to tell. Great unit at a great price. Highly recommended. ... Read more
