Very affordable
Oh Boy ! Prices have come down on quality receivers. Not only do you get more ... but you pay less than the previous version. This one has everything a picky home theater enthusiast is look for:
1 - 7.1 ch amplification
2 - 7.1 preouts (to connect a robust poweramp)
3 - Dolby ProLogic IIx (don't watch movies without it)
4 - Microphone Calibration (not parametric as the name suggests) ... better than an SPL since this measures spkr delays etc.
5 - Adjustable SUB Crossover (down to 40hz)
5 - Construction and overall quality

For Home Theater and Movies ? 5 STARS (Audio in a movie disc is not audiophile grade, so this receiver is just fine for that)

As an audiophile 2-channel receiver ? 3 STARS (get a external good quality poweramp for this)

Suggestions to Yamaha:
1 - Upgrade firmware to allow receiver to use a specific setting as te default for all signals. For instance, if you have a 7 speaker setup ... you should be able to make the player default to Dolby Prologic IIx for any and all signals.

2 - Remove the TUNER and reduce the cost. If you want to listen to the radio ... use that clock radio ! or go out for a drive in your car.

3 - Give us a lighted remote. Any Home Theater component ought to have a lighted remote. I am sure you know why. Right ?

Great home theater receiver
I replaced my Sony str-dee 335 which was a 5.1 channel receiver and 100W per channel. The Yamaha 5740 has a much improved power output and a very clean sound. It easily fills a large room and powers my large floor model Klipsh speakers quite well. I believe the technical specifications above are wrong, and it is 100 W per channel. It is interesting to note that Sony reports power per channel but only when running one channel at a time. There is a sharp decline in power on the Sony product when all of the speakers are running. The Yamaha is much better in this regard. I don't particularly care for all of the different sound options (concert hall, jazz hall...), but they can add some new variety to old music. Thankfully, the receiver has a "straight" button which cuts out all of the different sound field options and just plays the media as intended. My only real complaint is that the receiver needs one more digital inputs for optional devices (such as an x-box), but I am able to hook up my TV, VCR, DVD and X-box without too much trouble, but I had to set it up slightly differently than the manual suggested (for instance I have to have my VCR on to get stereo TV broadcasts). The Yamaha compares very favorably with higher priced Dennon units. I find this to be a great buy, and would purchase it again. ... Read more

A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY PRESENT!
Hey, guess what? My mother's gonna bring me this keyboard on my birthday on November 15th. It has a total of 200 songs, 5 user songs, 135 accompaniments, and more. The manual is multilingual, but you can access the English version and the Spanish version on www.yamaha.com. So come on and check it out! Oh yeah!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo doubt this is the best keyboard, or should I call it "Digital Piano", that YAMAHA's ever made. It's incredible how it sounds, so you'd like to check out the audio samples on YAMAHA's page, www.yamaha.com

Tremendous Instrument
I've owned several Yamaha Clavinova's over the years & have liked their playability, sound & quality. Though no digital piano in any price range can sound like an accoutic piano, most come close.

What interested me in the Yamaha DGX500 was the educational software included since I'd been away from the piano for several years. Plus having 88 keys to play Jazz was also an added bonus. ....

Once assembled, I turned on the instrument & amazed at the sound from a digital piano ... It has a beautiful blue LCD display that indicates both treble & bass clef & also shows all the keys on the piano so when you play you can instantly see where each key is & what note you are playing. Also included are over 200 songs (complete w/sheet music) that can be easily learned via the display. The educational software makes learning (or re-learning) music fun since it can teach you right hand-left hand techiques,timing, etc.

All in all this instrument is well worth the money even if you pay retail ...P>If you are an inspiring student or someone like me who took a hiatus from playing, take a serious look at this piano before choosing a more expensive instrument. ... Read more

A VERY Incredible Keyboard!
I researched keyboards for over a month before purchasing the Yamaha PSR-550. Needless to say, it is more than anything I learned while researching keyboards, and much more than I ever had hoped for! It has more capabilities than the above-average person could ever use. The price is well below that of what it should be, considering all that the keyboard can create. The only limits it has are those of the musician using it. I have connected it to my computer, and it performs perfectly. I recommend purchasing XGworks software to go along with the keyboard as well. The keyboard is fairly easy to learn (take your time, there are a gazillion combinations of controls and capabilities), very easy to set up, and time consuming to walk away from (it is so much fun to use that you loose track of time). Very useful, great construction
When I purchased my daughter a keyboard for Christmas, this stand was included. I must admit that I was very skeptical at first about a stand that was included with the product, but I am very happy.

It is very sturdy, easy to use and folds for storage or transport. The legs scissor, so the height can be adjusted for basically any type of seating you use - we have used it from kitchen chair to bar stool height. When not in use, you can collapse the legs together for easier storage, the width is about 4" when closed.

The only downside to the product, and I am not sure it is a problem with the product or with keyboards, is that there is no mechanism to firmly attach the keyboard to the stand. The keyboard just sits on top of the stand, and can easily be bumped off. I am sure that a way to attach the keyboard could be found, however I would not recommend this stand to a household with small children or for a household where the keyboard will be placed in a high traffic area.

Is this a Yamaha stand?
...it doesn't appear to be. It seems to be a generic universal keyboard stand. It therefore doesn't fit securely. The Yamaha PSR-290 has molded indentations in the bottom that the stand should fit into, but they don't. Although the stand is sturdy, the keyboard just sits loosely on top could easily fall off and crash to the floor if bumped by a child.

Also, like others who have wirtten reviews, I thought the bolts were missing when I began assembly. They provide an Allen wrench in a little plastic bag and you expect the bolts to be there too, but they are screwed deeply into the legs and hard to see - the instructions should note this.

keyboard beginner
I purchased the Yamaha PSR-290AD 61 Note keyboard. Although the keyboard will sit on this stand it is not very stable. I am sending it back. I now have a Yamaha L3C stand. Much better.

My son bought it from Amazon and when we opened the box there were no cross-pieces or screws. Now he has to return it and I have to buy another one and hope for the best.
