Amazon.com Product Description

If you want to save space, reduce clutter, and still have all the office equipment you need, the Xerox Workcentre XK50cx makes it possible with color printing, flatbed scanning, faxing, and copying designed to work together in one multipurpose unit. You can print professional-quality black text and photo-quality colors, make color and black ink copies including enlargements and reductions, all at the touch of a button, without leaving your home.

The XK50cx functions as a standalone copier and fax. Connect it to your computer and print at 12 pages per minute in black and seven pages per minute in color at 2,400 x 1,200 dpi. The 100-sheet paper tray helps speed along your projects, accommodating paper sizes from letter, legal, and executive to many specialty sizes, including postcards. With a 30-sheet automatic document feed, the copier runs at speeds of up to 10 copies per minute (five copies per minute in color) with reduction down to 25 percent and enlargements up to 400 percent (up to 100 percent with the auto document feeder). Copies and scans are at 600 x 600 dpi. Scan books, magazines, even scraps of paper, plus use OCR software to speed editing of scanned text. The 33.6 Kbps high-speed fax modem transmits your documents at six seconds per page and features document auto feed.

With Pagis PRO 3.0 software you can also easily scan photos and images to e-mail. If the WorkCentre XK50cx runs out of toner or paper, faxes can still be sent and incoming faxes (up to 160 pages) can still be received by storing them in the 2 MB memory. A USB cable is included in the package, and the device is supported by a one-year warranty, with overnight exchange service. --Barbara Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Well Designed and Well Priced
I think I read every review available on the Web for this product and competitive "multifunction" products. I ultimately decided upon the Xerox XK50cx, and am very satisfied.

There are a number of misnomers about this product that I would like to debunk for any prospective buyers. The most pervasive issue appears to be that the unit has no On/Off switch, a scanner "bulb" which remains on indefinitely and an electronics design which is not energy efficient. I wrote to Xerox about these issues, and here is how they responded (quickly and courteously, BTW):

"The XK50cx is a fax machine, which means that it is designed to always be on. The machine will go into a power save mode after about 3 days of not being used. This is not an adjustable setting. The scanner bulb will remain on during this time until it goes into power save, it doesn't hurt the machine in the least to keep it on.

"The 'bulb' does not require a lot of energy. The XK50cx is an Energy Star Compliant unit. This means that it uses the minimum power needed to do the job. The 'bulb' is not a light bulb in the normal sense, it is a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) sensor. The CCD sensor was designed to be left on, which means that it will not burn out like other scanners that do use bulbs.

"That is why we actually recommend to leave the device powered on. Also, the ink a liquid, with power on the ink will not begin to dry as the device will draw tiny droplets of ink through the nozzles to avoid clogging and product print quality errors. When powered off, the ink will begin to dry within 3 days or more."

Overall, I have found the Xerox XK50cx to have the best ergonomic design of any multifunction, flat bed/ADF device on the market. It has a very small, pleasing footprint. The print quality and speed are not quite up to HP specs, but are nonetheless very good, and at $X versus the comparable HP G85xi at $X(after a recent price break), I think this Xerox unit is -- hands down -- the best value on the market. Consider what you could do with the additional $X over the next 12 to 18 months, and the fact that these machines have a high obsolescence factor.

BTW, I downloaded the latest Win 2000 drivers from the Xerox site, and have had no problems with this unit attached to a Win 2000 machine.

I recommend the Xerox XK50cx highly, and hope that my comments are useful to any of you searching for accurate information on this great product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not under 13, but this product is terrible.
For the love of God, do not buy this printer. I have nearly broken my knuckles several times after taking out my frusterations upon it. This thing only prints when it feels like it, or else the paper will get jammed. Sometimes it'll take 10 sheets of paper in at a time. It's just un-reliable and I just wanted to save you all the trouble of buying this multifunction piece of non-printing trash. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xerox Review
I have had my Xerox All-In-One for over 2 years now and absolutely love it. I had a temporary problem with the paper feed, but it cleared up and I have not had any problems since. It is a great machine and extremely convenient. Only down side to me is that it prints just a little too slow for my liking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Product, Hated the Install
The install disk would not install the unit. It took me 3 days of fussing over it. I finally went to the Xerox website and downloaded drivers needed to install it, only to find out that I had to install the scanner features seperately! Now, all is installed and working. However, when I power down my computer, it sometimes turns itself back on. I will come home from work to find my computer on. I have compared the printing to my Epson Stylus Color 440 and there is no comparison. This machine prints beautifully! Love the product, hated the install.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great product! fax, print, copy, scan everything in one!
I bought this machine five months ago. I love it! It is so convinient. It support my 9 year old win98 machine and my winME notebook. The copier is very handy.

The fax function should be improved to support calling card, though. It takes months to figure out how to use a calling card to fax. ... Read more

The high-speed fax transmits at 6 seconds per page and permits documents of up to 30 pages to feed automatically. Additional features include fax forwarding and paging, remote fax retrieval, and 80-number phone auto dial. Plus, multitasking allows you to print, copy, or scan while receiving or sending faxes.

The WorkCentre 390 is engineered so that even if one function doesn't work the others will. 2-0 out of 5 stars Repair Costs!!!
A little over one year ago I purchased a Workcentre 390 and was pleased with the performance until, for no apparent reason, a "Fuser Error" appeared. I contacted Xerox and the cost to repair this is in excess of [money]. The copier was used only occasionally, not even one toner cartridge replaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
I have been researching MFP's for about 3 months now. I work out of my house and needed to upgrade my fax and printer. I settled on a laser due to the high cost of inkjet inks. I was leaning towards the 390 with its USB support...the purchase was made,... read the install directions and set it up. Installation was a breeze. I think the interface is very intuitive. The machine prints great text pages. I clocked 12 pages / min after inital start-up. I really like the ability to be able to make copies. At 300 dpi they are not as crisp as the printer but very pleasing. Also after using an injet printer, the lack of printer head noise from the 390 is greatly appreciated. The sheet feed scanner works great for documents. I use an Epson 610 Perfection scanner when I scan photo's. Lastly the fax is a pleasure to use. A great purchase. Very happy with my decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ordering another one today...
Received the WorkCenter 390 yesterday -- it was set up and ready to use in very little time. Our company has grown a lot and we needed a seperate fax line. We were planning to purchase yet another (non-networked) laser printer for a separate workstation, but decided that this little machine is really wonderful and would definitely be more useful in the lower level offices than a standard printer would be. So Far, so good!! We haven't used it enough yet to find anything we would change, although the receiving paper trays may not be very sturdy. ... Read more

The M950 WorkCentre from Xerox combines printing, copying, and scanning in one sturdy unit. Plus, with the addition of a print server, the M950 is networkable.

The flatbed scanner produces an acceptable 600 x 600 dpi in 30-bit color and 10-bit monochrome. After being scanned, images can be sent directly to nearly any Windows-based application.

The color copier has a 20-sheet document feeder for simple hands-free copying and can handle sheet sizes up to 8.5 by 14 inches. Along with settings like Mirror, Clone, and Poster, there are also seven preset levels of reduction/enlargement that vary from 25 to 400 percent of the original size.

As a printer, the M950 can produce laser-quality documents at 12 ppm in monochrome and 7 ppm in color. It supports a wide variety of media, including labels, glossy photo paper, and transparencies.

With the addition of a print server, the M950 is network capable. However, its processing speed makes it better suited for small offices that have only light network traffic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
Have owned this machine for 2 years. Started out okay, but after a year or so...
Document feeder does not work
Color prints have lines/incorrect colors
Printer will lock up and say "clear paper jam", when no paper jam exists. You have open the back access panel, then close it to reset the machine.
Numerous problems getting the drivers to install.
BEWARE!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought this
I'm sorry I bout the Xerox WorkCentre M940-950 (the 950 has a paper feeder but they are basically the same). I have had nothing but problems with it. I often times have to unplug the unit to get it to reset so my computer can send documents to it. When I upgraded to XP the Xerox web site said they closely worked with Microsoft to assure the WorkCentre would perform well. If they worked closely with Microsoft I can't tell. The downloaded driver doesn't install correctly. It's a nightmare to get the thing to connect to my computer now. In fact, I'm just going to eat the cost (as I tossed out the box weeks ago) and I'm looking for another unit from another reputable manufacture.

I will say the only good thing this unit is the copier. It did make wonderful copies of some photgraphs I had. If you plan on hooking it up to you computer pass this one up!

Very Unhappy!

1-0 out of 5 stars When it works it is great
But, it frequently "hangs" when printing or copying and needs to be unplugged to re-set it (the on-off switch is dead when it hangs). Otherwise, printing quality is excellent and speed is very good. Scanning is also good. A great shame that Xerox support can't fix the problem (after numerous phone calls to them) - they always tell me to try something else and won't accept it's already been tried by others! Unfortunately, it's going back for a refund - I've had enough of it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Many Problems
MY experience with this product has been awful. It photocopied fine, worked amazing. But the problems started when we tried to install it on our PC. Fine for a few days, but then it wont print. It hangs then prints ages later. It wont scan properly either. Now, it wont even let me install the driver again. It hangs aswell, i have to pull the power 'cos i can't switch it off. It is definately going back today! Do not buy this product!

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed!!!
I bought this Printer and was extremely excited, it copies, prints, and scans all for under three hundred dollars. It was easy to set up, the work center looked good, and the work center is a navigation center where you can print/scan/copy whatever you want. It's a USB printer, so there's not much work in terms of installing, you just pop in the CD-rom, and you're done.

For the first two days, this thing worked great, but then i ran into a problem. Many problems that lasted for 30 days (until i returned it!).

The first problem i ran into was during a standard print job, one page of text, nothing fancy, just standard college essay text. Did it print?...NO! I then pressed the print button again and again and again, until 10 print jobs were in progress, i was racing against time, my paper was due right then! it still gave me nothing, it just sat there like a big piece of plastic, not outputting anything. so i cancelled all of the print jobs, and 10 seconds later (after 2 minutes of requesting a print), it began to spew out ALL 10 print jobs! I then turned it off (after the printing had finished and rushed to school).

the next day, i tried to scan an image, and i ran into another problem. I hit the scan button, and the machine froze...the picture was only passport sized! the bleeding thing was getting me vexed. not only did it show a stellar performance the very first day i got it, but now it was doing anything but its job! (let me say, i keep the printer off until i want to use it, so it wasnt overheating or anything like that).

Then over the past month, i have been having problems with the machine, it prints at times and when it doesn't feel like it, it doesnt print at all (this is most of the time). 7 out 10 times, the machine doesnt print, scan or even photocopy...yes, even the photocopier began to act up.

The photocopier started to behave like a rebel just today (that was the last straw, i returned it today, 30th day). not only does this machine want to undermine my authority, but when it does so, i have to unplug it from the wall to restart it....yeah, did i mention that already? when it freezes, you cant turn it off by hitting the power button, it seems to be disabled, instead, i have to reach down under my desk and unplug and then plug in the friggin thing.

If you need work out of this giant plastic paperweight and its crunch time (you need it then and there) dont look towards XEROX M950, it wont produce the work. It has a vendetta against its owners. Seriously though, i strongly recommend that you do NOT purchase this printer. It is not worth the frustration and effort, and definitely the $.

The print quality is nice, so is the scan, but its a problem getting it to do all of these things. I hope you take this into serious consideration...I just returned mine today. Now, im looking for a multitasker that actually, dare i say, WORKS! ... Read more
