5-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Bang for the Buck!
I purchased this printer to replace a wide format inket printer that had become out-of-date. Since I am a graphic designer and need to run color proofs, I needed something very high quality (with postscript!) and was very picky when trying to decide which one to buy. I have a limited budget, so this was a major purchase for me and I had to get it right! Had to find the best printer for the money and I certainly got it with the Xerox Phaser 8400!

Before finding this one, I had purchased an HP color laser in the same price range, thinking that a color laser would certainly be the best option for me! Was I ever wrong!! What a disappointment, at least the one I bought! Extremely noisy, slow and constant paper jams. I only had it for one day (well, only part of a day!) and was completely fed up! So I sent it back and hoped I could find something better that wouldn't break the bank!

Then, a friend of mine recommended Xerox. I figured they would be too expensive, but what the heck... never hurts to look! Then lo and behold, the salesman came to my house and showed me the Phaser line of printers (as well as the more expensive color lasers). Wow -- something nice in my price range! In this brand, the Phaser and color laser printers looked pretty comparable in print (all fantastic!!), but with my budget, the solid ink Phaser seemed like the way to go. (It's about a thousand dollars cheaper than their comparable color laser, if I remember correctly. And I can think of other things to do with a thousand extra dollars!!)

I was skeptical at first, however, considering that this "solid ink system" is a newer technology. Thought I might be taking a risk, but the samples I saw from this printer were just as good (actually better!) than those of printers I had seen elsewhere at three times the price! I was absolutely blown away!!! All of their printers have terrific print quality, but since this was the cheaper one, I decided to go for it! Seemed like a bargain in comparison to everything else I had seen.... trust me, I looked everywhere! You can find many color laser printers for two to three times the money that don't even come close to the Phaser 8400's print quality! Everyone who sees my prints is always very impressed. It's the "star" of my office and just makes me look good!

The Phaser is incredibly fast, quiet and always dependable! The controls and interface are easy to use, and if you can't figure something out, you can even print out a manual from the front control panel. It couldn't be any easier! I absolutely love it and highly recommend this printer to anyone needing high-quality color printing... who wants to wait forever for inkjet prints? With this, you get things almost instantly! Great for impatient people like myself!!

And you never have to buy special paper. Because of the waxy feel of the ink, your prints are always crisp, glossy and professional, even on cheap paper. In fact, it seems to print best on just regular 20-24 lb stock, as well as card stock. The ink is quite expensive, but at least you'll save money on paper! (Keep in mind that you cannot use the photo paper that is made for inkjet printers or the special glossy color laser paper -- it will smear!) But who cares? Your prints look glossy on regular paper anyway, so you don't need anything special!

The only real downfall is that it has to stay powered on for the ink to stay melted... this results in a very warm (okay, HOT!) office, so you do need to have good ventilation or air conditioning in warm weather. But to me, that's a minor issue that I can compensate for.... it's worth it for such a quality printer. (It automatically goes to "power saver" mode after being idle for a while, though, so that does help.)

The ink seems quite expensive (about $400 to fill it with all four colors... ouch!), but when you consider how long it lasts, it's possibly cheaper than an inkjet in the long run. I've had this printer for four months and have only had to buy ink ONCE so far... with my old inkjet I was buying at least 2 new cartridges every month (at $50 each)!! So it's probably not as expensive as it seems, when you figure the cost per page. (And remember, you're saving money on paper!!)

I should also mention that the support from Xerox has been outstanding as well! They are always there to answer questions and have been happy to help with anything, large or small! True professionals that care about their customers! Everyone I dealt with was very friendly. Nice people! (Hey, good customer service is very important... seems like that's lacking in too many companies today, but not Xerox!)

So as you can tell, I am very satisfied with this purchase. Yes, it was a little expensive for someone used to an inkjet printer, but for this quality, it was definitely worth it and I have no regrets whatsoever. A great value when you consider the cost of a similar color laser printer -- anything that even comes close will cost you two to three times as much as this one! And if you compare the Phaser with everything in its OWN price range, there is just NO comparison! The Xerox Phaser 8400 just blows away the competition! It's just unbelievable! Compare them for yourself and you'll see what I mean!!

Keep in mind that if you only need something for home use or don't even print that often, this is too much printer for you.... go ahead and stick with an inkjet. But if you need a great office or graphics printer, this is it!!

To describe it in just one word, it's AWESOME!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing is AWESOME.
For the past several years I have used Epson flatbed scanners for both personal and business use. My Epson scanners provided a very good scan quality, and at a decent scan speed. The Epson software interface was ok, but not the greatest. Last week I decided to take a chance on this Xerox Documate 250, and I'm really glad I did. This thing rocks! I am amazed at how fast it scans stuff. And the scan quality is great. The software that comes with the scanner is really good, too. Much more user-friendly than the Epson software. Another neat feature is that this scanner will scan directly to PDF format. So no more cumbersome file conversion from JPEG's, BMP's, etc. I am seriously considering buying another Xerox Documate 250 (or another Xerox Documate model) for home and/or business use. I'm that impressed. I don't write many product reviews, so that should tell you something about this product. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

The Xerox DocuPrint P8 laser printer can place up to four pages of information onto one proof sheet. It also prints up to 256 gray shades, has two parallel ports for PC sharing, and offers 250-sheet paper capacity.

The P8's best feature is its simplicity. To set up the printer, we removed the protective shipping tape and padding, unpacked and inserted the included toner cartridge, and connected the AC power. We connected the parallel cable (included) to our PC and inserted the driver software disk when prompted by the Windows setup wizard.

To test the P8, we printed text in a variety of fonts and sizes. All our samples were as laser-perfect as we would expect from a 600-dpi printer, with most fonts looking as if they had been typeset. We also printed color fonts, and the grayscale interpretation seemed reasonable (violet was darker than red, and blue was darker than green). The rated printing speed is eight pages per minute, and we printed eight identical copies in 71 seconds.

We also printed a color photo using the default printer settings (600 dpi, medium halftoning); the printer's 256-grayscale interpretation of the original's colors was warm and smooth with little evidence of dotted halftoning or pixelation. The total printing time for the photo was 35 seconds (20 seconds to transfer the data and process the image, 15 seconds to print it) from the time we clicked the Print button to the time we pulled the paper from the output tray. A second printing of the same image took only 21 seconds.

We also manually changed the printer settings to 300 dpi with medium halftoning and again to 600 dpi with fine halftoning. The former was a bit grainy, and the latter was too dark. Clearly there's no need to override the printer's decisions for most printing tasks.

Overall, we think the P8's performance was very good for its price--this is a nice, little laser printer for general-purpose printing.

    Pros:

    • Parallel cable included
    • Quick setup
    • Simple, straightforward design

    Cons:

    • No software bundle
    • Drivers on floppy disks, not CD-ROM

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT PRINTER!!!
I got mine used, 3 years ago, without benefit of knowing how many "miles" it had on it. I downloaded the drivers (less than 1mb- not 20 or 30mb, like some) and they loaded up without a hitch in Win98SE. It has never jammed, despite using various paper weights and qualities, and prints a page in about 6 seconds, with superior clarity. I've used it with 4 or 5 different PC's.

When it ran low on toner, about 6 months ago, I was happy to find out that the cartridge was very easily refillable - it already has a plug you just pop out, to add the toner. I got the toner from TonerRefillKits.com for 30 bucks, with excellent instructions, and good for 2 refills. Refilling it restored the print quality to "just like new".

This was my first laser printer, and after using several brands and models of inkjets, all of which invariably had problems with cartridges drying out or leaking, I'm happy to say that the P8 has never failed to print perfectly, either during continuous use, or after sitting idle for several months.

Right now I'm considering getting another one for my second PC, as I'm VERY unhappy with the brand new Lexmark Z23 hooked up to it. I'll NEVER buy another Lexmark product.
You simply can't go wrong with the Xerox DocuPrint P8!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Compact & Perfect
This is my 2nd Xerox P8. I wore out the plastic gears after 3 yrs of use on the 1st. Paper exits up or down as you wish. Rarely jams (unlike another reviewers experience) and even takes pages already printed and with adhesive notes attached (although that's really not recommended). The print is great. If you don't mind having smeared ink all over, you can get an Ink-Jet model for the same money, but this little laser is great - no smears. I got my second one on-line, used but never used! Works just as good as the 1st one.... For a tight budget and a small desktop, this P8 can't be beat.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good for home use but Not 5 * good
I have owned a p8 for 6 months and put 3000 + pages monthly through it. If all you ever do is print single sided then this is a bargain for a printer. Try printing on paper that has already been through the printer and it noticably smudges the paper when doing this.It also misfed constantly. ( due to the curl caused by printer) This occured using many kinds of paper.

Supplies are a little on the expensive side, a drum and toner costing over the the price of the whole unit. Driver setup was quick with no major problems, good instructions( from previous experience good tech support )

Again this is non typical use, I was given the printer to try and would not argue that it would admirably be able to handle a life of homework and home finance for 2 years without hassle.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2000 reasons not to buy this printer!
While I'm certain this is a good printer-- Be warned there are no drivers, beta or otherwise for this printer available from Xerox that will function under Windows 2000. With the release of the OS just weeks away! Also when asked when they might have a driver for this printer under 2000 I was told, "I dunno. If we DO write a driver for it, I wouldn't expect it until after April." Granted there are some Xerox laser drivers that come standard with Windows 2000- this isn't one of them. For me anyway it was a big issue, so I returned it and bought the HP Laserjet 1100 (there is already a standard driver in 2000 for the HP printer)

I was truly surprised to find a company like Xerox so behind the curve in the technology market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing value
Who would have thought you could get a real-life laser printer for so little money? When I first saw this item on sale, I thought the price was a mistake. When I bought it, I half expected it to be too good to be true. Instead, I found myself with a printing workhorse. I share it on a network with two coworkers. It was easy to set up on our network, prints great quality text and images, and is reasonably fast. This printer exceeds the quality of a laser printer I purchased several years ago for over three times as much. Unless you have need of color printing, or have 20+ users sharing the printer, I can't see any reason not to get this gem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I bought this printer 1 week ago and the printout is beautiful.
Before I bought the Xerox 6250N, I checked Lemark, HP, Okidata and many other brands, but I found Xerox gave you the best bang for your money. I paid $2069 and got free shipping, Xerox have a $300 rebate, so basically the 6250N only cost $1769. What a great deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man, this rocks in my Panther 10.3.3 Mac office
A few months ago, I got tired of USB color inkjet printers. I was starting to need 100-200 color flyers at a time, maybe 1000 sheets a month, and the USBs were sinking under those kinds of demands. So, I started looking around for my first color laser printer.

Not so easy, given that they world of color laser jets is rapidly changing. Unlike inkjets, where "they're all the same", companies like Xerox, HP, and Canon are wanting to capture the growing market of home-owned CLJs, and are each experimenting with new technologies, ranging from solid wax ink, to new internal engines, etc. It's not an easy choice to navigate.

I basically searched the Net for customer reviews, using Amazon and the other places where end users post their likes and rants. In the end, it was a flip of the coin that made me choose the Xerox Phaser 6250N. I was able to get an open box from some company in Colorado, and paid just under two thousand.

I've now had the 6250N for a full month of usage. I've printed over 1500 copies. Some thoughts:

** The thing rocks. You know those pieces of technology you own that make you want to clap each time you use them? This is how it is with this guy.

** 26 pages per minute. I've timed it. I've actually had friends come over to just watch it churn out that many pages in a minute. This is with ANY page I throw at it, be it strictly text, or a full color flyer that doesn't have a speck of white paper left on it. No more waiting.

** I was afraid of two things: the noise and the smell. Smell: none. Can't smell a thing, and I have a dog's nose regarding anything chemical (I can smell from 4 feet away if a women is using chemical-laden perfumes, vs essential oil). Noise: during printing, it's not bad, it's actually kind of a pleasant noise, churning out each sheet. For awhile after each job, though, it makes an unpleasant ennnngggghhhh noise. Eventually, it turns itself off (10 to 30 minutes), but I haven't figured out how to get it to sleep quicker. I almost think there's some kind of internal heat sensor, just like a Mac: if it's hot, it turns on the ennngggh fan. If it's cool, it goes quiet. My only fix is to walk over and turn it off.

** It's big, not as small or lightweight as the old USB inkjets. It's 25" long, by 17x17". It's also heavy, probably 75 pounds. Not a big deal, but it's a shock the first time you pull it out of the box. No more tucking the thing under a desk.

** It holds 650 sheets. This means you can put an entire ream of paper in it. Holy moly, why didn't someone else think of this before? No more guessing how much it'll hold. Just grab a ream and stuff it in there.

** The ink system is a sight to behold. Located right there on top, under an opaque plastic cover, four round cylinders sit locked in with a 1/4 twist. Once they're empty, you twist in the opposite direction, lift it out, pop in a new cylinder, give it the 1/4 twist, and THAT's IT. No opening a door, no guessing whether you did it right, etc. It's one of the features that get an audible wow from friends. (side note: I have two friends who are really close to dumping their USBs and getting this thing, just by watching it work).

** Ethernet cable connection!!! Ahh, man. I think I would buy this for no other reason than to dump one more USB connection. For a mouse, fine, but my experience with USB is that it's really not that great, at least for the amt of data that a printer needs. When I click a "PRINT" button, I hear the 6250 wind up well under 1 second. That's amazing to me. Even on pretty large posters and flyers (with heavy graphics), the first flyer starts printing within 5-10 seconds. If it's straight text, it'll start printing within 3 seconds. 26 pages per minute.

** Speaking of Ethernet cable: wireless printing, from anywhere in the house. This has been a godsend to my wife, who used to always bug me about printing files from her iBook. Last night, she printed 20 flyers from the kitchen, wirelessly to the 6250 about 60 feet away. Is this a great time to be alive or what.

** About once every 3 days or 20 print jobs, the 6250N doesn't see my print job. I have yet to figure out what the deal is, but I use the idiot's version of tech knowledge: I power down and power up the printer. So far, that always fixes the problem. This may not be a printer thing, but an End User Thing. I may be doing something wrong.

** I haven't figure out how to get it to stop printing its internal Welcome/Startup page every time I turn the printer back on. Not a big deal, but who needs to waste paper and ink. Perhaps its a setting I can turn off.

** Ink prices: the first time you buy a set of 4 high capacity ink cylinders and fork out $650, you have to remind yourself of the "price-per-page" thing. Otherwise, it's a shock. In the Xerox Phaser's case, high capacity says 8,000 pages. Given that that is probably not an accurate number, I'm guessing more like 4,000 pages. That turns out to be about 16ยข a page. That's a number that I can live with.

** Software works seamlessly with Panther 10.3.3.

To wrap this up: I love this thing. I can't say enough good about it. After dealing with inkjets for 8 years, I am glad I bit the Visa bullet and spent the dough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Significant paper handling flaw
After much research, product samples, reading many reviews and correspondence with Xerox support staff, I decided to purchase the Xerox Phaser 6250 to use for printing greeting cards, postcards, business cards and similar items requiring a heavy card stock of 160 gsm or greater (approximately 65 lb. cover stock or greater). Xerox rates the capacity of the Phaser 6250 at 216 gsm (approximately 80 lb. cover stock). Unfortunately, after using this product, I learned from actual use, and had this confirmed by Xerox technical staff, that using "any paper that is 160 gsm or heavier may cause severe curling of the paper. We recommend changing the paper to a lighter paper-weight". I cannot over-emphasize the severity of the paper curling. This renders the product useless for printing items such as business cards, greeting cards, postcards and some of the other in-house printing jobs for which one would purchase this product.

This is a significant flaw which Xerox confirms. Do not purchase this product if it is to be used to print on heavy-weight card stock. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Scanning has come a long way over the past few years, and you can now thankfully get a very respectable model without breaking the bank. The 2400 from Xerox is a flatbed fitting that bill. While the low price tag is the first thing most people will notice, the 2400 also provides a 600 x 1,200 dpi hardware resolution (up to 9,600 x 9,600 dpi interpolated) and 36-bit color depth, so your scans are bright, accurate, and full of life.

Most people aren't scanning experts, nor do they want to spend their time becoming one, so the 2400 has preset scanning modes designed with exactly such users in mind. Select from one of six modes (OCR, copying, black-and-white photo, color document--faster, color document--better quality, and custom), press scan, and presto!

The software bundle includes Scansoft Textbridge Pro OCR, so you can scan documents and easily convert them to editable text. MGI's PhotoSuite III SE provides control over a range of scanner settings and has tools to help you get the best possible scans. The 2400's 8.5-by-11.69-inch platen fits most document sizes with ease, while the USB interface makes connecting the scanner to your computer a snap. Compatible with PC operating platforms only, the 2400 comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.
