4-0 out of 5 stars Overall good job
I am happy with this router. I have a HP845C USB printer that was not listed as being supported on the D-link web site, but I had no problem networking my 2 home pc's to access DSL internet and the printer. I was unable to find another product with the USB print server feature with the router. I have had it for a month now and no problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars False advertising
Warning : The product description says "USB print server" not "Maybe a USB print server". The list of the printers that are actually supported is buried in their website. I had no trouble connecting a Windows 2000 PC to a LAN port and using my DSL connection but a Windows XP computer, connected through a 10Mbps hub, even on the same port, could not see any network connection. It looks as if the 10/100 autosensing had a problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does the job - poor documentation, poor support
Beware of a few things. First the print server is compatble with very few printers. Go to D-Link's website and make sure your printer is compatible. Also if you are running a firewall on your PC's they may not see each other. The documentation is very sparse. The unit has a firewall but no explanation as to how it functions - your just suppose to trust it! D-link support will blow you off with ANY network questions. Unless it deals directly with the box they will say they can't help you. Other than that it works - next time I'll look at Netgear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Product
Set it to use as a router and usb print server. In no time at all I had my canon mp730 up on the network. I looked for this same type of setup and there is no other company I could find that supplied a product that is a usb print server and a router in one at this time. I also have a Netgear wireless router mr814v2 I was using previously and I like the Dlink features more. If you need to set up some parental control it gives you that as well. And it gives you more control on that then the Netgear. If there is one thing that could be better it would be a printed manual but all you need is in the pdf on the disk. Great job all the way around D-link! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars compatibility issue and poor reception
my co-worker bought this card, and unable to install driver on dell laptop
yes, I have no luck at all to install the driver
but when I install on my fujitsu laptop, it can be done easily
however, the result for me is disappointing, it get low in reception, while other can get good to very good

luckily I didn't get the card, but I'll suggest my co-worker to return this card if the netgear card I borrow to him is working, due to compatibility issue

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear documentation, easy to setup
I'm a first-timer when it comes to setting up wireless network to access broadband internet.

And with this card, I've FINALLY manage to get everything to work together. My home network now includes: Linksys router, Netgear wireless-G card on my laptop (win2000), and this D-link card on my wife's laptop (win98se).

Comments on this card:
Pros:
- very simple and clear (full-colored) instructions to setup.
- works well with win98se and win2k. I set it up within about 5-10min to work with the win98se laptop, which refuses to take the Netgear card. With Netgear, I spent 5 hours and it still did not work.

Cons:
- I feel the Netgear card is better in terms utility software and rescanning. If you are securing your network, the utility that comes with the card does not accept passphrase. This is a little inconvenient when you need to reset your password on your router. Netgear's utility provides a passphrase tool.
- When the wireless connection is broken (eg I switch off the router), the netgear card and utility rescans more quickly than d-link does. (netgear takes 10 sec, d-link takes about 18 sec. from the same spot.)

In terms of tech support, I've tried them all.
- Linksys has best tech support.
- Netgear's support is outsourced to India - and they don't quite care what you think about them. They kept pushing the blame to my ISP and router when the card didn't work on the win98se laptop.
- D-link support is also from India, I tried it before when I bought a USB hub and didn't like it. They gave you a case number for email correspondence, but don't followup.

When I was at Best Buy, the sales rep said linksys experienced much less returns than netgear and d-link, but linksys is usually more expensive. i guess you pay for reliability and better service.

Hope these comments help.

1-0 out of 5 stars wpa doesn't work
Tried using this card with the dlink DI-524 router. WEP works well but WPA doesn't for longer than a few mins as the connection just gets dropped. Returned both the dlink router and pc card for another brand which both work very well in WPA mode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.
I recently purchased the D-link 802.11g/b card. I had been very hesitant to purchase a card because I'm a bit new to wireless networking. What I wanted most was an inexpensive, easy to setup, easy to use device with all the normal features such as WPA.

1-0 out of 5 stars Device problems with Windows XP
Although the device appears to operate just fine as far as the network, speed, and range is concerned, the card has a serious problem running on laptops under Windows XP.

I spoke today (April 26, 2004) with D-Link customer service, and they said that the card is "new" and may still have driver issues. Also, they are aware that under Windows XP, the card is unable to wake up after standby/hibernation. This is what I experienced with my Thinkpad laptop. So the card installs OK and operates correctly....but the moment the laptop goes into standby the card will turn off, and then when the rest of the laptop wakes up the card will not. I have to reboot to wake it up. The kind telephone representative I spoke with was hopeful about a driver fix soon. I am not sure if the problem is only for some brands of laptops or all of them under Windows XP. I think I will return my card for another brand with better drivers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do not support a business that does not offer support
Me, like many others have the problems with the Blue Screen of Death, and an NMI Parity error. It has nothing to do with memory or anything else. There is a problem with the driver which D-Link have done nothing to remedy. They have been continously confronted with the problem, but does not offer any solutions except for one that solves the problem on a particular Compaq model.

This company does not deserve any customers. Please buy another WLAN card.

1-0 out of 5 stars another problem device
I echo other complaints about the DWL520. The connection is made with very good signal strength and quality. However, the device refuses to make any throughput. It would almost never successfully load a page. The irony is that I am using another Dlink product as the router. The 520 is a poor product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Product is junk and tech support a joke.
Using this wirless network card dropped my internet download speed from 2700 Kbps to 1200 Kbps.

That's with link quality of 100 and only one other computer on the network with no applications running on either computer (aside from the one browser window required for the test). Both computers had brand new DLink DWL-520 Wireless network cards operating into a new DLink DI-514 router.

Following industry standards, DLink apparently mans their first echelon phones with technical illiterates who while capable of following a scripted check list, haven't a clue what's causing your problem or how their sequence of steps might might solve it.

So, after numerous calls, multiple case IDs, and never talking to the same person twice, I decided it was best to cut my losses and give up before they reconfigured my computer to the point where it wouldn't work at all.

If you surf the web a lot or do internet gaming, stay clear of DLink products. Stick with a reputable name and save yourself the aggravation and wasted hours trying to make cheap junk like this work. The money you save isn't worth the headaches.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PURCHASE THIS CARD

I bought this NIC at CompUSA for $40 and thought it would make a nice, low cost wireless card. This thing was a nightmare from start to finish. The configuration utility that comes with it is totally counterintuitive. Nothing is where you think it would be. After installation, it detected my wireless network just fine. Steady 80-90% signal strength with NINETY-FIVE PERCENT packet loss. The connection would be stable for two minutes at the most and then die. I tried different PCI slots, I tried different channels, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software... nothing worked. I called D-Link support multiple times and spoke to a totally clueless "technician" each time. They offered such pearls as "try a different router" and "try uninstalling your sound card". Please.

There are plenty of other complaints online about this piece of junk. Don't bother buying this card. It's a complete joke.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major software bug and NO customer support
The 520+ "works"... for the most part. However, it
has a fundamental software bug that causes an NMI memory
parity error on shutdown causing your computer to freeze
with a "blue screen" and error message. There is no way
out of the freeze unless you unplug the computer.

For Compaq's they have a workaround to their bug. You may...
may... might be able to workaround their bug by diddling your
system BIOS (always a fun adventure unless you botch up a keystroke). For HP (and possibly others) there is no workaround. You are stuck. Repeated emails to D-Link have yielded nothing, which says something about there customer "service".

Stay away from D-Link unless you like pulling the power
plug in and out on your computer. Poor, buggy software and NO
customer service.

Use and install at your own significant risk. ... Read more

The D-Link DFE-530TX Wakeup-on-LAN NIC is an Ethernet adapter for PCs, high-end workstations, and workgroup file servers. Realtek's RTL8139A single-chip Fast Ethernet controller uses the bus master burst mode to directly transfer data between the card and the host computer's memory. This spares the host's workload by bypassing its CPU. This PCI adapter eliminates network bottlenecks and also works with videographic or multimedia stations.

Plug-and-play installation gets you up and running in no time. The software supports Windows for Workgroups; Windows 95, 98, and NT; LanMan; Novell; and Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great card!
I bought this card over 6 months ago, and it has worked great. The physical (PCI) installation is simple and straightforward. The driver installation on floppy took a little while, till I used the "help" folder (in DOS window) and reviewed OS specific instructions (W98SE in my case). The manual is skimpy on the driver/software installation. I use it with the DI-704 router which is just great. I called D-Link tech support once on another issue, and they were very helpful. From personal experience I have been extremely pleased and would recommend D-Link and/or Netgear, in terms of product quality and tech support. I have tried Linksys products twice, and returned them, and would never try again due to very marginal performance and even worse tech support.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for home networks.
The D-Link DFE-530TX+ is a great buy for your home computing needs. If you transfer large files between computers on your home network, having Fast Ethernet (100 Mb/s) connectivity is essential; this card will allow you to add it without breaking the bank. Of course, you will need a 100 Mb/s switch (or at least a hub) to connect them and benefit from the speed.

If you only have one computer at home, and will be connecting to the Internet with a broadband (DSL or cable) connection, the 100 Mb/s advantage of this card is irrelevant, as your broadband connection is slower than 10 Mb/s (standard Ethernet) anyway, and will act as a bottleneck. However, this card is so inexpensive, you can easily justify buying it with the future in mind.

The reason I have given this card only 3 stars is that it does not perform adequately in high-end server and routing applications. I would not recommend this card for use in mission-critical networks.

5-0 out of 5 stars D-Link DFE-530TX+ Ethernet Adapter
Have had several in operation on XP, M.E., and 98 SE computers. Have been mostly trouble free, small problems worked out with assistance of helpfull phone staff. User's guide is somewhat confusing, On page 17, under title "Software Installation" directs you to the "READ ME" file on root directory of installation diskette, of course there is no readme file there. But, well, nobody's perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick install, works fine, no problems.
Installed in Win. 98 machine. Took seconds to install drivers, a few minutes to install into machine, restarted machine and was ready to go. Easy instructions. Works fine.

3-0 out of 5 stars WARNING - A Good Card BUT Painful Installations
Warning! Recently, I upgraded one of my computer system with the new D-Link DFE-530TX network card and it destroyed my network system configuration file. After I installed their network driver that came with it (installation CDs) I was not able to connect to the Internet. Other computer systems that was on the same router had (no problems) access to the Internet so I knew my network router/cable were fine. I tried to dial out to the Internet but it also failed. Finally, after several hrs debugging the cause of my network problems was D-Link driver installation (CD). It corrupted my MS Windows Winsock file. I had to delete and installed a new Winsock file + Updated the Registry. Overall, the network card is OK but it does KO your MS Windows Winsock file. Used Intel and Linksys network cards with no problems - smooth and paineless installation. In the future, I will stay away from D-Link products and stick with Intel and Linksys. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YES. GOOD BUT BE AWARE
I am giving 5 stars to the camera alone. If I had to rate the colaterals: Instructions, manuals, customer service, and intentional obstacles ...then It wont deserve more than 3 stars.

When correctly configured and "harmonized" within your network, the camera works very well. I dont know about your expectations but compared with others ccd cameras in the market the balance price/quality is unbeatable.

Since any critic must be 1) constructive to the maker and 2) helpful to other customers, following ...the details and tips:

Problem: Lack of information, Instructions and solutions to specific and commom problems experienced by most of the users.

**** Read Carefully what the other users who rated positively the camera, said about it and how they resolved the problems. Without all these tips I would have wasted hours to findout the solutions. Amazingly those issues are not yet in the Q&A at DLINK support site and neither complement pages for your manuals. Another Marketing Dude with a good monthly check but not a clue about the most fundamental Marketing disciplines.

Resuming:
**** Not only with the camera or Dlink... Any thing hooked to your PC or network must be updated with the most recent firmware. Here...No exceptions, and if you use diferent brands for your router and other net-gears then no option: Update the firmware.

**** If you are behind a router and you want use the DDNS than use the router's feature and not the camera one.

**** If you are using diferent brand for your router... WATCH OUT:
a) Transmission rate of the camera must be 11 Mbs. DLINK's ambitions must have let them think that most of the routers in the market are their own, so the 22 Mbs for the 802.11 b standard has been assumed.
b) If your using Linksys G router then adjust the basic rate (wireless advanced setup) to 1-2 Mps This will make it more compatible with all sort of exotic 11B devices.
c) Assign to the camera a static IP so you will be able to forward through the router, the necessary ports for Audio+Video

**** Customer Service:.... Have a translator from India before calling ( My english teatcher and friend Kamal is from India...so no hard feelings here ), and be sure that you are a beginer because if you are an advanced user you ll have to be patient and wait untill the dude finishes his script and then find out that you know more than him and it it is only then when you deserve a real tech. assistant. The dude will give you a code, forward your call and then when "the expert" takes the phone the call is lost. bip bip bip bip.....nnnnoooooooooo all this time wasted and I only got an "Indie-Tech" Language Class.

Hey Markting Dude This is again your department...uppps Remember...: No Emporwerment Without Ownership...you ll be soon in the toaster if you dont change something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent little camera
I purchased my DCS-5300W in early April and so far I've been quite pleased with it. Be sure to download the latest firmware (1.02) version from D-Link's site. The initial version was a bit buggy causing problems such as the clock losing several minutes per day, and inconsistent results with the ftp feature.

A significant change with the new firmware is the removal of the camera pan and tilt feature from all users except the administrator. I thought this was a bug, but after speaking with a knowledgable tech, he informed me that this is one of the new features of the upgrade. I understand the logic behind this decision, but they should have removed the display of the pan and tilt icons for these non-admin userids.

I've had much success using the dynamic DNS service from DynDNS.org. I set my D-Link DI-624 router up to use a static IP address for the camera and activated the dynamic dns (DDNS) feature on the router, not the camera. My ISP assigned DHCP IP address has changed several times now, and the router DDNS feature has worked perfectly.

My only complaint would be the lack of an optical zoom capability. D-Link added digital zoom with the latest firmware upgrade but as we all know, digital zoom is vastly inferior to optical zoom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great once you have it set up.
Now that I have it up and running, I love it. I have grown to know the D-link tech support crew fairly well over the past week. Most of them are really good, but if one of them can't figure out your problem, don't send the camera back like they may suggest. Call back later and try it with someone else. Overall the camera works exactly as described, but there are a few caveats.
1) If you plan on logging on to the camera from work (i.e. to peek in on your new baby), be aware that the camera requires more than just port 80. It also requires three other open ports and many corporate networks are locked down tight with regards to open ports. Grandma and Grandpa will be able to log on just fine from their home computer though.
2) The camera gets fussy when I try to use it in wireless mode and view it with a wireless laptop on the network (the ultimate baby monitor). It works great in wireless mode when viewed from a wired computer.
3) Only the administrator can control the movement of the camera. Guest or other camera viewers have to view the current position of the camera. I think this is a bug and will likely be fixed with firmware.

Overall it is a very good product and seems to be of high quality. The manual isn't too bad considering all of the different network configurations a user may have. I am happy with my purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch your step.
I don't know where everyone is getting these cameras, but I purchased one a week ago from Amazon. It was the DCS-5300W. Or so it was sold to me as. However, once received I discoved I was sent from Tiger Direct, the 5300 only. No wireless!. I call Tiger Direct and they tell me the 5300W won't be available until June 11th and they cannot take back orders. I check Amazon again - and the camera is still being sold - but now at a higher price. Where are these cameras? I wish these distribution companies would sell what they advertise and only when it is available. What a mess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works pretty well once it's configured
After spending about 2 hours with D-Link tech support (this spanned 4 technicians of which 2 were tier 2 support), I was advised to exchange the unit I had for another because it just wouldn't get a valid IP address on my network (I use the Microsoft mn-700 router which is great). No matter what I did, the unit kept cycling thru IP address and wouldn't accept a valid one. It would just default to 192.168.0.99 and that address would be unreachable from my network which used (192.168.1.x). When the second unit arrived on exchange, it had the same problem. I called tech support again and finally spoke with someone competent. He advised temporarily changing the IP address of a PC on my network to 192.168.0.x and to try to configure the unit from that PC. That advice worked. I should've thought of this myself but so should the 4 techs I spoke to the first time.

Anyway, once I had connectivity to the unit, it was configured for wireless use in minutes and it works well. The video quality is good, the audio is decent. The range of pan/tilt is really impressive. The digital zoom is mediocre. Overall, it's a good camera. I wish it was cheaper and had optical zoom. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I will have to return this for the third time soon...
The very first one of these I got was the new fan-less design. It worked great for about a year but then it fried one of its ports AND took out my 3Com network card at the same time. :-(

I called and D-Link replaced the switch for free (but of course wouldn't even send me one of their 10/100 cards to replace the 3Com), but the replacement I got is one of the older "with fan" units.

The problem? The fan is now making a horrible noise/rattle but has not actually failed as of yet, so I doubt D-Link would replace it again until the fan actually died...

Bottom line - great product, reliability is a bit suspect, though, and I'm a bit unhappy they replaced my newer unit with a refurbed "Rev. A" unit...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what you are looking for
No doubt a great and simple piece of electronics. I consider my self a technology-saavy but I just got started with the world of HomeLans. Not knowing much, made me shop for quite a while for the best featured, great pricing device. I was quite eager to receive the D-Link DSS-5+ and it was quite easy to put it to work. In less than 10 minutes I had my network up and running. Great features like 5/port connectivity, auto speed sensing, uplink port, and low price make this a must for every home lan, even if you buy it by mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, simple but reliable
I have had this equipment for a year now. In the past 11 months I have used it at my home network with an ISDN connection, but last month we upgraded to ADSL and the result is even better.
My home is in Guatemala City and on this small country we have plenty of communication technology that makes this kind of services posible.
Again, is the best equipment your money can buy, zero problems. I really recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweetest little switch!
I have been replacing my ethernet hubs with switches (because the throughput on a switch is much better than on a hub). After extensive review, I decided to get one D-Link 5-port switch and one Netgear 5-port switch, both auto-sensing for 10/100 rate. The truth is, they both work great! They both perform well, and were equally easy to hookup (no software to deal with). I will add one thing, and that is that the D-Link box was a much nicer design than the Netgear. First of all, it is much smaller (the picture of the D-Link here is deceiving). Secondly, the Netgear has the LED lights and the ethernet ports on the same side. For my setup, I prefer the ports on the back and the lights on the front. I think the Netgear switch was fashioned more for a rack. Style aside, a big thumbs up for both of these switches!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing bad to say about it...
This device arrived as a replacement for my 10bT hub. The process of actually replacing it was just as easy. I'm now getting the performance that I was seeking for my network...and at a great price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Easy Set Up, Great Product
Received this product and was up and running in minutes.

I am very pleased that the directions were easy to follow, and that the unit performed as stated. Hooked up an old windows 98 slow computer with the USB adaptor. IT just plugs right in. Loaded the software, and immediately could surf the internet at cable modem speed. AAAAA++ for simplicity and doing what the product description states.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, but download new firmware first...
Pro: Very fast setting up to get wireless connection and the speed was pretty good at 24-36 Mbps.

Con: But I have no luck connecting it to my broadband cable ISP for over 90 min of fruitless tweaking (I'm an IT guy and consider myself geek), I decided to give it a shot upgrading firmware before calling up the tech support... Bingo, it worked!

Con: One reason it took me over 90 min troubleshooting... almost every configuration change requires a router reboot! It certainly beats Microsoft, Netgear, and Linksys on that.

Con: Btw, you can't forward a range of ports to a specific host, you have to specify port by port.

Con: if you want to secure your network by using MAC address filter to prohibit unauthorized access, you have to put in the MAC of your wireless clients, as well as the MAC of the wired clients. I don't know why D-Link would consider wired eithernet client a risk.

Pro: But once you set it up properly, the router works fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!!
I like this product. It comes with a 802.11g, 54Mbps router and a USB 1.0 adapter. So, everyone has high speed internet and a computer can have wireless internet using the D-Link DWL-922.
The performance is excellent. It did not slow down the connection speed. One tip for those who brought the DWL-922. Log on the web-site and find the appropriate installation precedure. DON'T trust the maunal from the box. Their web-site has more detail, step-by-step instruction. It can save you hours of works. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cool product, poor implementation
I read all the reviews and couldn't wait for my access point and PC card to arrive. I consider myself a fairly techie person but I haven't dabbled in networking much. It took 5 hours and 2 phone calls to D-Link tech support to get this setup. The quick install directions for the card are pretty easy. Most of my problems were with D-Link's wireless access point (DWL-5000AP) and how it interacted with D-Link's router (I-604). But, I figured that once set up, who cares how long it took as long as the product works.
Here's where I had problems ... I could walk around my house and enjoy a very fast connection. Fifteen minutes to an hour later, the connection would drop. I could place my laptop next to the wireless access point and it couldn't get a signal. I called D-Link again. The tech service guy finally came back with an answer: .11a doesn't work well through walls. They suggested that I call the sales department to find a more suitable D-Link product. That didn't seem to explain my problem or anything that I read about .11a, so I shipped mine back yesterday. I'm going to give the NetGear .11b equipment a try. I know it won't be as fast or as cool. I'm just shooting for a reliable connection right now.

3-0 out of 5 stars It works as advertized but there is an issue with Win XP
I purchased this card for my Dell c800 laptop together with D-Link's DWL-5000AP access point. For the most part, it works out of the box and installs flawlessly. However, this card does not appear to be fully XP compatible. The drivers available for it are quite "old" (April 2002) and ARE NOT CERTIFIED XP COMPATIBLE. This card is not "hot-swappable" as it will cause XP to blue screen if you pop it out of the slot without stopping it. A call to D-Link support confirmed this along with the fact that they have still not received certification from Microsoft. I would stay away from this product until they do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Install, Easy Configuration, and Easy to get FAST Speed
All I had to do was install the drivers in my laptop, reboot and plug the card in the PC card slot. When it boots back up it recognizes the hardware and installation is almost instant. It even connects to the router/ap instantly. I was very impressed and pleased with the range and speeds I get with this wireless card. I am able to surf the internet and play games outside with a high speed connection and NO WIRES.

If you have the money I'd say go for it. If you are looking for a wireless 802.11b product I'd say go for the DWL-650+ because it's double the speeds compared to older 11Mbps hardware and a better price. But I like speed and 802.11a is all about speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Faster the Better - It Doesn't Get Much Faster Than This
I love the speed of the 802.11a products, and D-Link has now made it easy for me to use. I get great range with this and the DWL-5000AP. I feel very comfortable that my high speed wireless network is secure with the 256-bit WEP encryption, plus all the other security related features this has.

Works great for me and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Install and Works out of the Box with DWL-5000AP
This card worked out of the box for me when I paired it up with the DWL-5000AP from D-Link. I was very pleased with my first installation of a wireless network. I just followed the instructions and everything went as planned.

The range is great because I get good signal strength even outside on my patio. Surfing the Internet outside on a laptop is a whole different feeling than inside on a desktop.

My friend even bought one of these just so when he comes over with his laptop we can play some LAN games. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mac OSX Kernel Panics
This is a strange one. On MacOSX 10.2.8, it works fine with the DSL modem at 10M, but is a disaster with the school network at 100M. And by disaster, I mean: Kernel Panics. It's the kind of crash where everything stops, the screen dims, and you get the "you must restart your macintosh" in four languages. To address this, I did the following: 1) re-installed the driver (1.1.3); 2) re-installed OSX 10.2.8; 3) re-installed OSX 10.2.8 without preserving user or internet settings; 4) erased my MacOSX partition and re-installed everything from scratch. Still, I get kernel panics within 10 minutes of going online at 100M, and at no other time (even with the card used for 10M dsl; even when card is plugged in but not attached). Note: user reviews of d-link's USB wi-fi dongle for MacOSX record a similar problem.

Until this problem is corrected, I strongly recommend against use of this card for MacOSX 10.2.8 installations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly, Easy to Install
Within 15 minutes of receiving this card I had my local area network up and running between two computers. Admittedly, I was looking to do something very simple: two computers, side by side, connected with an RJ45 cable (not included with the card). The drivers included on the CD-ROM work fine with Windows 98. My only complaints are that the card sticks out of the PCMCIA slot about an inch and that if you remove the card and reinsert it the card needs to reinstall (a simple process). I bought this card as a cheap test to see if I could set up a simple network before trying to tackle a wireless network. I am so satisfied that I will probably buy D-Link wireless hardware.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent product
built-in connector avoids the need for a dongle. if you have a cable connector for your ethernet it will not connect to this device. this device is only for RJ-45 type connectors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster than other 801.11b products
I bought this 650+ with a D Link AirPlus 614+, also supports 22 Mbps. When I tried to transmit some files under 22 Mbps mode, speed was almost same as 11 Mbps mode. I think the firmware and drivers are not optimized well enough. The DWL-650+ has cardbus interface and it's really 20% faster than other 802.11b products which has pcmcia interface as they insist. This router has good web based interface and good quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Free your laptop from wires
Purchased this card to compliment the DI-614+ wireless router I purchased. Installed this into my HP N5495 PIII laptop (1.06Ghz, 512 MB, Win XP Home) with out any problems at all. Installed drivers as instructed, installed card and it was instantly recognized and windows finished the new adapter installation. As soon as the install finished I was connected. I have heard people having problems installing these D-Link cards without first disabling other network adapters but my computer has two others that are enabled and they cause no problems. I installed my router in the corner of my basement and can roam to the opposite end of our 3 bedroom brick ranch home with no worse than 55% signal strength. My Roadrunner service is providing 275-325 Kbps consistantly on this card almost everywhere in the house. I've had great luck with the card and got a great deal on it. I have also used 3 other D-link products and have nothing but easy installations with good working products.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't upgrade the drivers with Windows XP and a Dell laptop!
After many long hours on the phone with tech support, who was at times helpful, and at other times not helpful, I've come to the conclusion from countless testing and reboots that any drivers except the ones that came with my card do not work.

I believe the driver that came on my install disk was 2.02 or something, that works fine. If you have XP, and/or a Dell laptop (mine is Inspiron 5100), DO NOT UPDATE THE DRIVERS, EVER. You get a blue screen system error about the driver not being equal or something and saying it was dumping the data, etc...

Other that that, the card seems to work fine, however, the distance isn't what I expected and certain walls in my office block it for some reason. I must admit that I've put way too many hours into making this work at home and in the office. It really shouldn't be this hard. Perhaps I'm one of those people that it just didn't work out for. I would honestly buy a different brand before buying D-link again simply because of my poor experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars works better than the linksys card
I 1st bought the linksys wireless network card. I was able to connect to the access point, but not the Internet. Their technical support was clueless. I returned it for the D-Link card. I was able to get it to work on our corporate network but found that for WEP encrpytion it would not autoconvert the catch code phrase into 128 bit hex. However, I was able to find a free Internet converter at http://www.mikezilla.com/exp0012.html which allow me to enter in the code word. It would be nice if DLINK updated their software to do this automatically.

2-0 out of 5 stars DROPS CONNECTION TO ROUTER CONSTANTLY!
Tech support could not help, switching laptops did nothing. A replacement DWL-650+ showed the same symptoms. I then decided to buy a cheap wireless VCNET 22mbps card (9.95$) and it has never ever lost the connection to the router, the signal is consistently stronger (now I can use it in the back yard where as the D-Link) would drop to a red connection and within seconds lose the connect entirely.
Just a waste of money, go with a no name brand, they work fine. The D-Link router (DI-641+ or better) does perform brilliantly though. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Interface, But poor software and 802.11b compatibility
I got the Dlink as a replacement for my Linksys BEFSR4 (non-wireless) which died during a lightening storm. At first look the User interface is confusing but I soon realized it was better organized for the new user. The routers DHCP didnt pick up my DSL ip so I had to hard code my ip and then flashed the 2.0 firmware. I would recommend everyone to upgrade their firmware to atleast 2.0. I set up WEP 256 right from the start
The Bad:
1. It worked well with my Dlink 614+ card on one of my laptops, but I could not get the configuration utility to work on my main laptop. I finally got it working by hacking the windows registry, but Dlink Support are still clueless.
2. I was in for more problems when I bought a US robotics wireless card, you would think that 802.11b would ensure smooth compatibility. I got the card all setup (had to reduce the wep to 128 bit as WEP 256 is not supported on this card.) The router seemed to detect the card as I could see the MAC address in the wireless status screen, but there was no ip and no link. I havent tried using any other cards but looks like there could be a compatibility issue.
3. When setting my Virtual servers (port forwarding) I only set one custom port forwarding and when I tried to add one more it reported that it had "run out of space". But infact it allows me to add more settings on other pages.
4. D-Link claims this device to be a router, but there is no way to statically route my connections along a particular path. I think thats essential because then I could share my wireless internet connection with anyone and not compromise my LAN. My LinkSys had this feature I dont know if the LinkSys Wireless router has this feature.
5. Their support stinks
6. No SNMP Support. My LinkSys router used to support SNMP (Simple network Management Protocol allows you to save logs on your computer) and SPI (stateful packet inspection rejects any packets whose connections dont originate from your LAN)

The Good: 1. D-Link has the best warranty in the industry 3 years (My Linksys died in 1.5 years with a warranty of 1 year)
2. The Dlink is fast I can get up to 22 MBPS
3. The range is great.
4. Has a feature by which you can save all your configuration changes on to a file great if you want to reset your router or change setting and experiment.
5. Good buy for a novice user.
6. Great price

5-0 out of 5 stars Working Perfectly for 5 Months Now ...
The install was easy, the setup was simple, and performance has been better than great.

I have Earthlink DSL (PPPoE) and this router connected within about 2 minutes of when I set it up, and has only dropped my connection once or twice since then. And even then the drop only lasted about 10 minutes. I think this was caused by my ISP when I was assigned a new IP address and the router had to update the info to reconnect.

I have been using 128-bit WEP since I bought it 5 months ago and everything has been working fine. Collegues of mine have come over every now and then and they can connect to my wireless network just fine with their name brand cards as long as they have the correct WEP key.

I update my router with new firmware every now and then, and almost every time it adds more features or speed. Like fairly recently the speeds have increased due to the 4x firmware D-Link released. I also upgraded the firmware on my DWL-650+ and was able to acheive those higher speeds. Transfering files between my laptop and backup server takes less time now.

Since I've bought this I have never had a reason to reboot/reset it except of course when I upgraded the firmware or changed some vital settings.

I am pleased with this purchase and believe I will be for years to come.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
This product works for a couple months and you "think" its the best thing since sliced bread... HOWEVER as the months go on, it starts having problems... such as rebooting itself at random times disconnecting you from the internet, and not allowing you to view certain web sites. Technical support is very slow and couldn't resolve my problem. After several WEEKS they issued an RMA and sent me a refurbished model with the same problems. So I wouldn't recommend this product, or any D-Link product if you want something that's going to last and work for more than a year.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trouble, trouble, trouble.
I read alot of the reviews here, and half of them say they plug it in, forget about it, and love it. The other half say they have difficulties with it in one form or another. I know, though, for a fact, that trying to fix problems you MAY have is a pain in the ass. D-Link's tech support has solutions to offer you, but as I and half the internet community can attest, they very often don't work.

There is also the fact that OLDER versions of their firmware are more stable than newer versions. One of the things I've seen very rarely on their own webpage, and constantly from other users on the internet, is that -downgrading- your firmware is the solution to many problems.

My reccomendation, if you must buy this router, it so download Trendware's firmware - You can make the DL 614+ accept the foreign firmware(Google it, if you must ask), and Trendware's actually WORKS. The 614+'s firmware is worthless, and even their tech support don't know how to make it work.

Worse yet, their tech support don't seem to know what they don't know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 22mbps Wireless AP Router
I am a Network Analyst and have used Linksys and Netgear for clients and friends. But personally I use D-Link. Price wise they are the lowest compared to the aforementioned companies. With the AirPlus and great wireless conditions (less obstructions) you will get greater speeds up to 22mbps. I recommend this product to all people who wish to go to wireless. I got this model on Rev. A. when it had two antennas.
I had updated to the firmware v2.18 (no need to get the newer version since I don't have any issues). I think since I have had this product, the ONLY time I had to restart it was during its initial configuration and once after the firmware update. Honestly one of the BEST wireless routers AP around for the price. C|net's favorite pick too. Also, if you have many obstacles or need to extend or add an Access Point GET the DWL-800AP+!!! Simple!!! FAST!!! and Versatile.
Sticking with D-Link, I just purchased a DP-300U Print Server, WOW what another great D-Link item.
I read the previous post of the Network fella that had a hard time, sorry to hear, but in your case it might not have been your Dlink. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The D-Link DI-713P is a broadband IEEE 802.11b compliant wireless gateway. It provides the ability to share a broadband connection as well as a print server function. You can share a DSL or cable modem connection through its three local 10/100 Ethernet ports or via its integrated Wireless IEEE 802.11b component. The DI-713P is equipped with a bidirectional LPT port to support a direct printer connection. Its integrated router and firewall provide NAT, DHCP, and packet filtering services between the local network and the Internet.

D-Link's DI-713P allows wireless LAN users to share the Internet connection while providing the security of 128-bit encryption. Static address support, integrated DHCP, PPPoE, and device name support will allow it to connect to nearly any broadband provider, whether cable or DSL based, and at the same time simplify local area network settings.

The DI-713P provides two levels of security support. First, it masks local users' IP addresses from others on the Internet, making it much more difficult for a hacker to target a machine on the network. Second, it can block and redirect certain ports to limit the services that outside users can access. Specific ports can be opened by the user to ensure that games and other Internet applications will run properly.

The router and access point combo also provides special pass-through for common VPN implementations including PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol), L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) and IPSec*. The Virtual Server feature allows the user to expose HTTP, FTP, Game Servers, and other local services to be accessible to Internet users located outside the LAN. The User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel feature allows the user to define the attributes to support special applications requiring multiple connections, such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, and Internet telephony. A DMZ setting can be applied to a single client behind the DI-713P to expose it to the Internet and ensure complete Internet application compatibility, even if specific ports are not known.

Unlike proxy server or NAT software that requires the software server to remain visible on the Internet, no local computers are directly externally visible when using the DI-713P. Also, the DI-713P, like broadband, is always on, removing the need to constantly boot a software server when Internet access is desired from a client.

Integrated DHCP services allow up to 252 users to obtain their IP address automatically on bootup from the DI-713P. Client machines require no software; simply set them to accept a dynamically assigned IP address and reboot. Each time they are powered up, the DI-713P will recognize them and set their IP address to instantly connect them to the LAN.

* PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec support compatibility are dependent on the platform used. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value, solid performer, with some room for improvement
Pros: reasonable price; three ports for wired connections; reasonably simple administration procedures and usable interface; integrated print server (parallel connector)

Cons: no support for bi-directional communications with my HP LaserJet 1200se (e.g., it no longer tells me I'm out of paper, etc.).

After scouring the Web for insight and equipment reviews (the PracticallyNetworked site was especially helpful) of the myriad of router options, I decided on this one from D-Link. My housemate and I needed to share our newly installed cable Internet service in our three-story house, so wireless seemed like the easiest option. I put the router in my office on the second floor, and he has no trouble accessing the Net by laptop from his office on the first floor, and I can usually get 500+ Kbps (on a PII-333 laptop running a NetGear PC card) in the living room on the third floor. 2Wire's bandwidth meter clocks about a 1.5 Mbps connection for my P4-1.2 wired directly to the router.

I haven't had to call D-Link for tech support, so I can't speak to their abilities/response time. I did use their Web site to download a firmware upgrade. All told, I had our wireless net up and running in less than an hour (which also included a call into RCN to get them to tweak our cable modem on their end).

One thing to bear in mind: pick access clients that are solid performers, whether they're PC card or USB devices. Routers like this are only the access point portion of the wireless equation -- speed and range can be easily hobbled by anemic clients that can't hold up their end of the bargain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for its price ...
I was looking for a LinkSys wireless DSL router in amazon.com. In my search, Amazon.com also showed me D-Link DI-713P. The price after the rebate was amazing. I ordered and received it after 10 days. I opened the neat packaging and found out the sleek DI-713P unit with 3 wired 100MB ethernet ports, a print server port, a modem port and the Wireless option. I configured it for my PPPoE DSL Modem, configured the Wireless SSID. It has an easy to use web browser based configuration program. It took just 15 minutes for me to configure the router and the wireless and wired clients. Everything worked as advertised in the product packaging box. The VPN passthrough feature of this router is a breeze and I can connect to my company's Intranet using IPSec. I would have given 5 stars for this product. Instead, I'm forced to give 4 stars because the wireless router performance is not satisfactory when I enabled WEP (both 64 and 128 bits). The performance issue must be something to do with their WEP algorithm implementation. Otherwise, it is a very reliable and superb product. A GREAT VALUE FOR ITS PRICE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sleek Unit - Fast Wireless
The unit is very easy to install via the web browser, accessing the router's own setup software (there is nothing to install for the router, except for the printer server!) My configuration is for 1 wired XP pc, and 3 wireless DWL-120 USB adapter-connected ME pc's. The wired setup was a breeze with internet connection 10 minutes into my install at a fast 1.6 Mbp/sec communication speed. However, the quick install guide does not have a section for XP machines (a shortcoming). The DWL-120 install was also very easy -- simply load the driver and then connect the USB plug. I got 50%-90% signal strength from 70' away. The USB communication speed was decidedly lower (220Kbp/sec). I wonder if this could be improved with a PCI card (DWL-500), but I prefer the portability of USB. The manuals were fine for ME-based pc's in both router and adapter.

Now for the shortcoming -- the printer driver provided on the CDROM does not work for XP pc's. You have to go to the Dlink website to download that driver and read the FAQ for steps to install those drivers. My NEC-870 laser printer is still trying to work with the XP pc (work in progress). The ME-based pc, however loaded up the DI-713 drivers fine and printed to my laser sucessfully. The firewall also disabled my voice chat and netmeeting AV functionalities. This is a heavy price to pay for shared broadband pipeline. The tech rep told me to enable the DMV feature in the router setup advanced settings to bring down the firewall (I would still be protected by Norton's Internet Security fire wall, I hope). That gave me limited voice but no video (work in progress). Overall, I give it a 4, not 5 due to the above shortcomings. They should have XP drivers on the CDROMs by now, it need not be that tedious. That done, the DI-713/DWL-120 combo would be a fantastic setup.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable
In September 2001 I set our office up with a Broadband 802.11B Wireless Router from D-Link. That puppy gave me fits. I couldn't keep anything connected. Finally about a year ago it got so bad I replaced it with this router and access point.

Setup was easy, range is sufficient for us-- A two story 1890's home make into an office, and most of the network problems eased into oblivion.

I thought we were having a problem last week but it turned out to be a Siemens Wireless Network connector in its last throes.

When it comes time to replace this router I'll probably go for a D-Link again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works, Most of the time
This is a good product that does what it says it does, most of the time. The reason I dont give it 5 stars is that every once and awhile it becomes dumb, it simply forgets that there is a cable modem hooked up to it, and the only way to fix this is to reboot it. It is a minor inconvenience, but can cause quite a bit of frustration in critical moments. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't disable firewall, unstable print server
I was thrilled when I first installed my DI-704P last summer. Internet connection sharing is a breeze, and the print server was a great feature. I soon found, however, that Windows (98, 2000 and XP) would often fail when trying to print to either of my Canon printers (BJC-2100 and S750) using the print server. I had to reconfigure Windows to print directly to the printer, which causes the program doing the printing to hang until the printing is complete. Even at this setting, the print job will often fail, requiring a re-boot of the PC. I have better luck when I cycle the power on the printer JUST before sending the print job, but that really shouldn't be necessary.

The firewall has recently began to give me problems, following a firmware update to version 2.70. I use Lotus Notes and an IBM AS400 Client emulator to access my company's VPN from home. Both programs worked flawlessly through the DI-704P until recently. Now, I have to physically bypass the router by re-plugging ethernet cables to get onto the VPN. I tried to configure the DMZ (which supposedly bypasses the firewall for one computer), but found that when I set a static IP address for the computer (as required by DMZ), I was unable to access the internet. Firewall settings are VERY spartan, and some seem to be completely ineffective even after several re-boots of the firewall and all client PCs. Overall, the management software for the DI-704P is severely lacking.

Technical support is limited (almost non-existant), but that's par for the course these days. Their web site offers firmware downloads and a FAQ section, which is very sparse on meaningful information.

I've set up several SMC and Netgear routers for my clients, and currently plan to replace this DI-704 with an SMC "SMC7008BR Cable/DSL Router with 8 Port Switch" (Amazon has a great price!).

My recommendation? Bah - skip this product and look for comparable products from SMC or Netgear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good router & print server for cable modem.
I purchased a refurbished model for around [$$$] and everything was in perfect order. The old admin password had already been removed so there was no problem accessing configuration.

The D-Link DI-704P is very easy to hook up. I especially like the idea of having all the wiring in back and the LED's in front. As far as documentation; it is all included on the cd in pdf format. I suppose this keeps the cost down.

Getting things up and running took about half an hour, mostly because of one small undocumented glitch. It just would not connect. The problem was easily solved after reviewing the FAQ's on D-Link's web site. All I had to do was run winipcfg and release the current settings, then renew. After that just power down everything (computer, router, cablemodem). Then power the cablemodem back up and let it cycle through its procedures; power on the router; then the computer. All works perfect.

One of the main reason for choosing this unit was the print server feature. The software installed flawlessly, and reconfiguring my printer to direct it towards the D-Link print server was easy (HP DeskJet 420). Printing functions normally, so now my computer does not have to be on 24/7 to act as the print server.

I rate this product 5 stars for value and performance, but minus one star because the faq answer should have been included in the original documentation. So maybe a 4 1/2 star rating is more appropriate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great router when it is working
There are at least three versions of this router with the print server. Mine is DI-704P revision B

This is a great print server "when" it is working. Unfortunately, it gets hot and unexpectantly quits working. I live in Calgary, Alberta and the temperature has been bitterly cold during the last two weeks. I keep the house temperature around 65 deg F in the winter and the router is well ventilated.

To get it working again, I have to unplug it and let it cool down. Then I have to reset the router. I have two other DLink Routers, a DI-604 and a DI-624. The first time that this happened, after reading the manual, I assumed that the router is reset using the same proceedure as my DI-624.

After trying many times, I contacted DLink and found out that I was not using the correct proceedure. So, I went back to my manual to see if I had misread the instructions. I discovered that something got lost in the translation from Chinese to English.

I have had to unplug (to cool) and reset the router about four times in the last two weeks and have decided to give up and replace it with the DI-604 that I had previously used. This router was purchased in September or October, 2003 and should still be under warranty. I will wait to see what DLink will do.

The DI-704P router runs considerably hotter than my other two routers. The high temperature has been reported by others on DLinks website. My experience seems similar to what others have reported.

1-0 out of 5 stars Won't Keep Working
I've had this router for about a year now. I remember it being difficult to configure, but for the most part it has worked okay until recently.

Now the router stops working constantly. I have to reboot it by unplugging it, waiting, and plugging it back in. Once I go through this routine, it's good for another few hours of use.

Obviously this is unacceptable. I'm looking for a replacement but its hard to find something with the a print server, which I really need.

5-0 out of 5 stars D-Link DI-704P (Silver Case)
The DI-704P does everything that is promised. Port forwarding works with AIM and MSN file transfers. You can play online games right out of the box without any configuring, and you can also host matches as a server with such games as Unreal Tournament 2003, Nascar 2002, and Medal of Honor without exposing yourself in the DMZ, as long as you forward the appropriate port ranges. I run Kerio firewall on all the client machines and allow those forwarded port ranges to only be accessed by the game executables. This gives me full stealth reports from grc, sygate, and pcflank, even when hosting games or doing file transfers. Out of the box, port 113 (Ident) does not stealth. This is easily fixed by forwarding this port to an unused IP address on your LAN, or to a computer with a firewall, such as Kerio, that will stealth it. The most recent firmware (version 2.70) is flexible, easily configured, and stable. The only thing that I find odd with the 704P (silver case) is the seemingly poor arrangement of ventilation holes on the case. The unit gets pretty warm to the touch. It hasn't complained, but it makes me wonder why they didn't provide for more air flow through the case. I found that by moving the provided rubber feet to one of the side ends, and standing it up, a lot more air flows through the case. So, to make it short, it looks good and it works great, and the price is right! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Tool for Optimum Placement of your Access Point
I have one of these and it allows me to put my access point in my attic. This location for the access point provides great wireless coverage of my house. This enables my access point to be in my attic where there is no power sockets available but I can run an Ethernet cable up there and using this it supplies the AP with power.

This is very easy to use, just plug everything in the correct way. And yes there is documentation to help you connect everything correctly.

5-0 out of 5 stars These Do Exactly What They Claim
I now have my wireless AP located in a better spot, nigh reachable from a power socket. These PoE adapters let me do it.
The wireless AP I use is a D-Link DWL-900AP+ which requires 5V and 2.5Amp of power. These PoE adapters don't look like the picture Amazon has up now because they are a new revision that can handle more power for the new APs out there. This is a great option for extending the wireless range of your Wi-Fi network.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what it appears to be...
According to D-link's website description of this product:The DWL-P100 Power Over Ethernet (POE) Adapters are accessory items designed to supply operational power to devices with an Ethernet port and power requirements that do not exceed 5 Volts/1 Amp. The DWL-P100 Adapters provide an ideal solution to mount a device such as an Access Point virtually anywhere in a building (ceilings, attics, or roofs) without the need to locate the wireless Access Point near an electrical outlet. The DWL-P100 consists of the Base Unit and the Terminal Unit connected by an Ethernet cable to extend the reach up to 328 feet. (Please refer to illustration below) The DWL-P100 supplies the AP with power via the single Ethernet Cat 5 cable. The DWL-P100 is primarily targeted at users looking for a convenient solution to extend the coverage of their wireless local network...Its not a TRUE wirless solution ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Setup and Great Documentation
My entire wireless network is composed of Linksys products, so naturally when I wanted to get a wirless print server I looked to Linksys. I went out and bought the linksys WPS11. It is a parallel port wireless print server. Got it up and running ok, but printing was really slow. Sometimes 1-2 minutes between pages on text documents. So then I went out and bought the PPS1UW print server. This is Linksys' USB version. Couldn't even get this thing going at all with my printer, which I thought was odd since my printer worked fine with the WPS11 and they have you install the same print server drivers.

After spending about 3 days troubleshooting, I went back to the store and found the DLink DP-311U. Got it home, plugged it in and had it talking to my Linksys WRT54G wireless router with 128 Bit WEP encryption in no time. This print server processes my print jobs at the same speed as when I had the printer plugged in directly to the pc. I was also impressed with the detail of documentation as opposed to the documentation of some other linksys products I had bought.

I definetly recommend this product if you are looking for a way to place your printer at a distance from your computer. Great Product.

1-0 out of 5 stars sucks!!!
Stay away from DLINK if you expect ease of use or have mixed operating systems (XP and MAC)!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars worked for me with XP Home, Linux and HP d135
I REALLY like the small size of this unit. It fits great into my new home office setup where I don't have a lot of space near the printer, or an easy way to route a long USB cable.

It is true that the quick start guide is only for Windows XP. I was able to follow the instructions and get everything working on the first try. The only problems I had were with friggin' Windows, not the DP-311U.

Once I had it set up in Windows, I added the Linux connection to the DP-311u's LPR deamon via CUPS and it worked the first time.

I did not bother with the d-link admin program. I never inserted the CD into my CD drive.

Corrections to other postings: 1. This is definately wireless, you only need a 10BaseT wire when you first set it up. 2. There is a "Reset" button that must be pressed with a pin.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor product, and not even wireless
Incomplete documentation. DEFINITELY do not buy this if you are not a 'techie'. And plus, its not even a wireless product! It has to be physically connected to the Wireless LAN router, so how is it wireless?

1-0 out of 5 stars If you have a mac, forget about it
As others stated, the documentation was AWFUL to say the least. Unless you have XP, you are pretty much on your own. I was able to wrangle through and get the server hooked up to my PC (windows 2000). My two macs, however, will not function with the printer. It requres you have Post Script 3 on your printer. Mine is a laser printer that isn't too old, but doesn't have that feature (would have been nice to read that before buying)
Likewise, none of the administrative software works for a Mac, so if you have no machines running Windows, you are out of luck.

Finally, and this was probably my ignorance and unrealistic expectation, but to me wireless means wireless. For mine to work, the server has to be physically connected to my wireless router via ethernet. If I have to do this, why don't I just use a physical connection in the first place? There are cheaper options for that. The picture on D-links site shows this happy little server floating in wireless space where ever you want to put it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me and a Great Convenience
A good friend of mine had this USB adapter and a couple of other USB devices like a webcam, a zip drive, and his wireless keyboard and mouse. He was getting poor transfer rates (2-3Mbps) with this USB adapter so he decided to sell it to me and get one of the PCI type Wireless adapters. This was the perfect choice for both of us. He now gets about twice as much speed as he did with this USB adapter and I get about 5-6Mbps with this USB adapter. It seems as though he hade too many USB devices and the bandwidth allotted for this device wasn't what he wanted.

We also found out, after actually reading the manual thoroughly, that placing wireless devices near monitors, TVs, radios, and anything else that uses radio waves could suck up the signal strength of the wireless products. (His USB adapter was on top of his monitor, since that was the highest point he figured it was best.) Turns out it wasn't.

So I ended up getting a good deal, and a great product. And he ended up finding a good alternative. I would like to send my thanks to my friend Matt for the good price and D-Link for the useful documentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Installation and Great Documentation
I own the Wireless Network Kit D-Link sells and it comes with two of these Wireless USB Network Adapters. I was able to set-up my network in about an hour and only ran into one problem. But it turned out to be my fault and thank to the documentation I was able to solve it rather quickly. Next time I will read the instructions a little better.

The netowork runs fast and I am more than happy with the results. I highly recommend this product along with the Kit for people who are like me and don't want to run wires thoughout their home.

2-0 out of 5 stars The D-Link disappoints.
While the thought of being able to simply plug-and-play and get 802.11 wireless networking is appealing, the d-link doesn't deliver. The installation was fairly simple, requiring only a quick reboot (after setting IP addresses, etc). But! I have never been able to get more than 2Mbps out of this device, even 2 feet from the AP. I have a laptop with built-in wireless, and it easily gets 6mbps. Also, my Win98 computer is less than reliable while using the D-Link... Windows blue-screens after a short while -- generally when transferring moderate to large amounts of data.

In all, you'd do best to check out the USB solutions from other manufacturers (I know for a fact Lucent ORINOCO and Linksys have similar products).

3-0 out of 5 stars drops connection with 614+ router using xp
shows excellent signal strength but then for no reason looses connection for a few seconds then connects back up, does this constantly, tried changing channel to 6 and that helped a bit, I am going to try to flash the bios in the 614AP. Any help on this one?

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't connect to D-Link AP800+ repeater
DWL 120 connects to weak signal of D-Link router DWL 614+ and not to strong signal of D-Link 800+ repeater. A laptop right next to the DWL-120 with a PCMI card installed does connect to the strong signal of the repeater. An upgrade to firmware 2.5 results in complete failure of the DWL 120. ... Read more
