1-0 out of 5 stars kills batteries
This recorder kills batteries.
I use the recorder turn it off and try to use it again (within 24 hours) and the batteries are dead. I called Memorex...They said to take the batteries out after every use. Not a great idea as I purchased this to use while driving. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The pocket-ready Memorex MB0035 digital voice recorder packs a lot of memory in its slender chassis. This compact recorder boasts a storage capacity of up to 60 minutes and stores up to 128 different messages across two convenient folders.

The lightweight device was designed for single-handed or even hands-free operation, fitting easily in the palm of your hand. Record, play, search, and mode buttons are located on the face of the unit, and the MB0035 can record automatically by voice activation (VOX). Alternatively, you can record a message manually by pressing the record button, pressing it once more to stop. Press the play button to listen to your messages. To play back only the first 5 seconds of each message, use the Intro function for quick scanning.

The MB0035 has two folders, each of which holds up to 30 minutes of audio. The recorder also includes volume adjustment and an input for an optional external microphone, to improve the quality of your recordings or minimize the presence of your recorder (stashing the recorder itself in your backpack and positioning only your microphone on your desk, for instance).

The recorder runs on two AAA batteries (not included) and also features a clock display and selective message erase.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great product to enhance your memory...
If you have trouble remembering some things that you should not forget, you need this little device. For light note taking (this machine has a one-hour capacity), this recorder is perfect. It is easy to learn and use, and the sound quality is good. The only complaint I have is that the screen is slightly hard to read. I suppose that can't be helped since the recorder is so small. Regardless, you will enjoy having and using this device. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for low end digital recorder
I picked up the Memorex MB2054 at a local Target store on clearance for $17.48. I've been looking for a reasonably priced VOX digital recorder for a while and the price was right. The unit has microphone and earplug jacks on top with the typical controls on the front. On the back are three switches for mic sensitivity, VOX, and a hold to lock the controls on the front. Pressing the REC, PLAY or PAUSE button powers on the recorder and it automatically shuts down after thirty seconds of idle time. This model advertises four hours of recording time, but that is at the lower-quality LP mode. Selecting SP mode will give thirty minutes. The installed flash memory holds three separate folders with up to 99 messages each. Finally, it is powered by two AAA batteries and the LCD readout does show battery strength, which is a nice feature to have. The manual states a fresh pair of batteries should last 6-10 hrs. As far as performance, the LP mode (4 hr.) is disappointing. Playback is somewhat garbled and I find it usable only if dictating verbal notes to myself. The SP mode (30 min.) is much clearer and is of better quality than any tape-based recorders I've used in the past. To sum, this recorder has a good display panel and it's very easy to locate, play and erase specific messages. I'm pleased with the features offered, although I would like to have seen a shirt clip added since the unit is very lightweight. There is a small opening in one corner that would allow you to add a thin strap, but none was included. If you have modest recording needs then the MB2054 is a good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does what it should, nothing fancy.
As usual, many expect too much from a voice recorder. LP mode is usually unusable, even from most expensive brand; SP mode is where it counts, clear enough for taking note in a small class room. This model is slightly cheaper than other brands, and the build quality is OK, it is plastic, don't abuse it, it will last long time. It does what is should and well, but if you want something flashy, pay more for other brands. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very low recording quality
I bought this product and am very disappointed with the poor tape quality of recorded material. There is a lot of background/static noise recorded. Also, the diameter of the recording spot is sooo small. Maybe it would be better with the microphone attachment? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Buy Never
Okay this is a "value" priced digital recorder. It does largely perform as advertised. The problem is that if you really need a digital recorder, than you will need a better model than this. Otherwise you will find you use this a few times and than it sits in a drawer. Save your bucks and buy something you really need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!
This little recorder is exactly what I wanted as a memory boost. Thanks to other Amazon reviews I knew just what to expect before I made the purchase. It's true that the sound is fuzzy, so I hold it close when recording. I couldn't make the voice activation kick in either, but I probably wouldn't have used that feature anyway. For the money, it is perfect for me. I use it every day and no longer have to search for notes I write to myself. I am a very happy customer.

3-0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for!!
As a writer, I recently decided to purchase a voice recorder, and decided on the Memorex beacause of it's low price. The recorder is rather large, it's much to big to fit in your hand. The messages you recorded are very hard to hear, and the controls seem simple but are actually very complex. This recorder is not worth it, spend the money on a nicer model(it makes a big difference), or stick to the old pad and pencil.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
I had bought this unit somewhere else, and the next day it went right back. VOX did not work as described, and the sound quality was worse than the worst worn-out micro tape unit I have ever had the displeasure to listen to. In the electronics world, the word "digital" implies pristine, crisp sound, yet this unit not only plays back as if you spoke through a folded towel, it also swallows entire syllables. Makes me shy away from other Memorex products. I'm amazed they even put such a stinker on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clearing up some things...
FYI:

- this recorder holds 16 minutes/99 messages as stated in the Amazon.com Editorial Review, NOT 32/198 as currently (10/11/00) listed in the Features

- in order to get the VOX feature to work, you have to press the RECORD/STOP button to get it started after following the instructions in the book (it will then record for 5 seconds and then stop until you speak into it and so on until you press RECORD/STOP again - keeping it all in a single message) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Truly poor sound quality, inconvenient controls and low-end materials made this a regrettable choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. HELLER
I got this product about six months ago and it still works great. The sound is average. It can hold 32 minutes of memory which is what I need. I really recomend this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's okay; good for the money
this is the first micro/digital I've purchased. Level of quality is about low to average, but the price is right. The on/off switch could be easier to engage/disengage and the other buttons require a good amount of pressure too, but depending on where you keep it, that may be a plus if you don't want it to do things accidentally.

Size/weight is perfect, mostly one hand operations. VOX works well, although the on/off resets to the (VOX) off position every time you turn the unit off. Another nice feature is the intro.scan, but you have to turn on the function and it also resets itself (to off) every time you turn the unit off. It will take about 20 minutes to learn all the functions.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of all worlds!
Voice Recorders allow you to capture ideas wherever you are and then do something about them instead of forgetting! I have done this for over 5 years now and this is the best machine I have seen out of many I have owned. It has the best mix of everything I would want.

Practicality: One of the few machines with intuitive controls where your thumb is! Size: Perfect for palm and pocket. Weight: Light! Small, easily available batteries too! Memory: 32 mins is ample for many, many ideas.

Features: All the things you would want and none that you wouldn't. It replaces my need for one pocketable machine and another larger one with more memory and features. Manual: Simple, short, understandable. Functionality: Excellent LCD with comprehensive information.

Cons? I don't like things that beep! It does.

Why not five stars? Hey, things can always get better!

If you are looking for a machine that will allow you to always be on the ball and never let inspiration get away, then this is the machine for you.

Still not convinced? Next time someone (attractive!) offers you their phone number, pull this out instead of the old pen (if you have one!) and paper. It's very cute and you look very savvy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great...
I just wanted to use this for personal memos, so I'd have some way to keep track of things I think of while driving. I had real trouble working the controls, & the front ends of memos were consistently clipped. The voice activation feature just moves the (clipped) words forward in the memo; the dead air is still in the memo taking up memory at the end. I had so much trouble getting this thing to turn on and off when I wanted it to, and in understanding my memos when I played them back, that I gave up on it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Memorex's MB2180 personal microcassette recorder doesn't have many features that set it apart from the crowd, but it's a solid unit that gets the job done. It's also one of the few microcassette recorders we've tested that's truly useful out of the box, as it comes with one blank tape.

The unit is powered by two AA batteries or via the 3-volt DC jack. It doesn't come with a power supply, but we had no trouble getting it to run with a cheap universal adapter purchased at the local electronics store. A large red LED protrudes from the side of the recorder and stays lit as long as the unit has power. It's garish, but considering how important it is to know when the recorder needs batteries, it's a practical addition. We were somewhat disappointed with the MB2180's controls, as the buttons are narrow and extremely stiff, which made using the fast-forward/rewind cue switch less than enjoyable (and also less than precise).

Recording can be done either manually or turned over to the automatic voice-activated circuitry. We were impressed with the quality--especially on the full-speed setting. Recordings were clear, and the built-in microphone did a great job of recording only what it was pointed at. The sound quality gets a little muffled on the half-speed setting, but it's still adequate for making personal recordings or conducting close-up interviews if you need as much recording time as possible. There's also a headphone jack if you don't want to listen to playback through the unit's decent integrated speaker. The MB2180 isn't the most feature-rich recorder we've ever tested, but it does its job well and its low price belies its overall value. --T. Byrl Baker

1-0 out of 5 stars The speaker doesn't last!
I've owned two of these stinkers in 18 months. The first one's speaker blew in normal playback in about 3 months. The second one's speaker has been fizzling for the last 7 months, and finally quit. It's been terribly frustrating -- and because the unit is so inexpensive, it doesn't make sense to try to have it fixed. Don't get it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little misleading
Though the microcassette recorder works just fine, the technical data is misleading. There is no lapel microphone included, which is one of the reasons why I chose this item.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fair Machine that's nice for the price
I just bought this recorder and it is fairly decent in quality, especially since it is about $10 cheaper then the other micro cassete recorders from here. I have not used any other microcassete recorders before, but I am sure that there are probably more worthy recorders if you are willing to pay the price for them. If you plan to use the recorder frequently spending some more money may be better. However, this recorder does the job well for me, a low frequent user. You basically get a decent machine for a decent amount of money. And if anyone was wondering, it looks like the Panasonic recorder if you wanted to know what it looks like. It also includes one 30 minute tape but does not include batteries (2 AA) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far exceeded my expectations for $20.00.
Bought it for the kids since they were always stealing my expensive Sony, well eventually I lost the Sony, and in a moment of despiration grabed the kids, after scraping all of the gooey kid stuff, and replcing the batteries, I ran out the door to go to my meeting. Upon arriving at the meeting I turned on the recorder and to my surprise it worked flawlessly, I think the sound qualty is actually better, and it is definetly durable, upon returning home I bought a new one of these for myself, and have been very happy with it ever sense, the kids still use the old one and it has been a few months now, I just got interviewed with it last week, and it is still ticking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Memorex MB2186A
For the price, this microrecorder does the job. I purchased this one to replace a forty dollar Panasonic one. This one works just as well if not better than the more expensive one. The only thing that I don't like about this one is that it is made out of cheap feeling plastic. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone that just tosses these into the briefcase. ... Read more
