5-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Bang for the Buck!
I purchased this printer to replace a wide format inket printer that had become out-of-date. Since I am a graphic designer and need to run color proofs, I needed something very high quality (with postscript!) and was very picky when trying to decide which one to buy. I have a limited budget, so this was a major purchase for me and I had to get it right! Had to find the best printer for the money and I certainly got it with the Xerox Phaser 8400!

Before finding this one, I had purchased an HP color laser in the same price range, thinking that a color laser would certainly be the best option for me! Was I ever wrong!! What a disappointment, at least the one I bought! Extremely noisy, slow and constant paper jams. I only had it for one day (well, only part of a day!) and was completely fed up! So I sent it back and hoped I could find something better that wouldn't break the bank!

Then, a friend of mine recommended Xerox. I figured they would be too expensive, but what the heck... never hurts to look! Then lo and behold, the salesman came to my house and showed me the Phaser line of printers (as well as the more expensive color lasers). Wow -- something nice in my price range! In this brand, the Phaser and color laser printers looked pretty comparable in print (all fantastic!!), but with my budget, the solid ink Phaser seemed like the way to go. (It's about a thousand dollars cheaper than their comparable color laser, if I remember correctly. And I can think of other things to do with a thousand extra dollars!!)

I was skeptical at first, however, considering that this "solid ink system" is a newer technology. Thought I might be taking a risk, but the samples I saw from this printer were just as good (actually better!) than those of printers I had seen elsewhere at three times the price! I was absolutely blown away!!! All of their printers have terrific print quality, but since this was the cheaper one, I decided to go for it! Seemed like a bargain in comparison to everything else I had seen.... trust me, I looked everywhere! You can find many color laser printers for two to three times the money that don't even come close to the Phaser 8400's print quality! Everyone who sees my prints is always very impressed. It's the "star" of my office and just makes me look good!

The Phaser is incredibly fast, quiet and always dependable! The controls and interface are easy to use, and if you can't figure something out, you can even print out a manual from the front control panel. It couldn't be any easier! I absolutely love it and highly recommend this printer to anyone needing high-quality color printing... who wants to wait forever for inkjet prints? With this, you get things almost instantly! Great for impatient people like myself!!

And you never have to buy special paper. Because of the waxy feel of the ink, your prints are always crisp, glossy and professional, even on cheap paper. In fact, it seems to print best on just regular 20-24 lb stock, as well as card stock. The ink is quite expensive, but at least you'll save money on paper! (Keep in mind that you cannot use the photo paper that is made for inkjet printers or the special glossy color laser paper -- it will smear!) But who cares? Your prints look glossy on regular paper anyway, so you don't need anything special!

The only real downfall is that it has to stay powered on for the ink to stay melted... this results in a very warm (okay, HOT!) office, so you do need to have good ventilation or air conditioning in warm weather. But to me, that's a minor issue that I can compensate for.... it's worth it for such a quality printer. (It automatically goes to "power saver" mode after being idle for a while, though, so that does help.)

The ink seems quite expensive (about $400 to fill it with all four colors... ouch!), but when you consider how long it lasts, it's possibly cheaper than an inkjet in the long run. I've had this printer for four months and have only had to buy ink ONCE so far... with my old inkjet I was buying at least 2 new cartridges every month (at $50 each)!! So it's probably not as expensive as it seems, when you figure the cost per page. (And remember, you're saving money on paper!!)

I should also mention that the support from Xerox has been outstanding as well! They are always there to answer questions and have been happy to help with anything, large or small! True professionals that care about their customers! Everyone I dealt with was very friendly. Nice people! (Hey, good customer service is very important... seems like that's lacking in too many companies today, but not Xerox!)

So as you can tell, I am very satisfied with this purchase. Yes, it was a little expensive for someone used to an inkjet printer, but for this quality, it was definitely worth it and I have no regrets whatsoever. A great value when you consider the cost of a similar color laser printer -- anything that even comes close will cost you two to three times as much as this one! And if you compare the Phaser with everything in its OWN price range, there is just NO comparison! The Xerox Phaser 8400 just blows away the competition! It's just unbelievable! Compare them for yourself and you'll see what I mean!!

Keep in mind that if you only need something for home use or don't even print that often, this is too much printer for you.... go ahead and stick with an inkjet. But if you need a great office or graphics printer, this is it!!

To describe it in just one word, it's AWESOME!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing is AWESOME.
For the past several years I have used Epson flatbed scanners for both personal and business use. My Epson scanners provided a very good scan quality, and at a decent scan speed. The Epson software interface was ok, but not the greatest. Last week I decided to take a chance on this Xerox Documate 250, and I'm really glad I did. This thing rocks! I am amazed at how fast it scans stuff. And the scan quality is great. The software that comes with the scanner is really good, too. Much more user-friendly than the Epson software. Another neat feature is that this scanner will scan directly to PDF format. So no more cumbersome file conversion from JPEG's, BMP's, etc. I am seriously considering buying another Xerox Documate 250 (or another Xerox Documate model) for home and/or business use. I'm that impressed. I don't write many product reviews, so that should tell you something about this product. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars XP 450 Constantly loses Connection
I use this in a law office/buiness setting with an IBM laptop running Windows 2000. The problem is if I do not scan something for about an hour, the scanner loses its connection and you have to turn it off and back on to get it to scan. A royal pain in the you now what since the power button is on the back. I called Visioneer support and they said "That is the way it works - if you do not use it it loses connection." I think that is BS. My HP did not. If someone else has problem and a fix, let me know. Otherwise, our office just nixed buying 50 more of these since I was the test case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a quiet reliable small footprint scanner
Thia is a great scanner. It is quiet, fast, and the document feeder works flawlessly. Be careful during installation. After installing Paperport, it continues on to install the driver without pause. The last screen tells you to connect the USB cable before selecting the 'finish' button. If you are not reading the screens, you could miss this and have to uninstall and reinstall which is messy. Other than that I highly recomment this. I have gone through 3 HP and one Canon scanner before finding one that fits the bill perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workgroup scanner
I've reviewed and used many scanners over the years. Each is inevitably a compromise. However, the Strobe XP450 is by far the best that I've tried so far in its price range. It's fast. relatively resistant to jamming, easy to set up, and has less skewing than most automatic sheet feeders. It's also very compact and reliable. Highly recommended. I use it in a law office setting and it's been one of the major reasons that I have been able to move away from paper based files toward a much more efficient digital law office. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit slow but small size is what matters
The great thing about this scanner is its size. It is very small and is powered by the USB port so it doesn't even require an external power supply. I bought this as a replacement to my old visioneer strobe scanner which wasn't supported after my upgrade to windows xp.

The Strobe XP is a great scanner although there are two downsides:
1. This scanner is slow- much slower than my old Strobe scanner, even at 100dpi scanning.
2. The USB cable that came with this scanner was defective, and I can't even begin to tell you how much trying to debug it frustrated me until I tried another cable. If your cable works, the install is easy.

The positives are as follows:
1. Small size
2. Paperport software that comes with it is great
3. Good quality scans even color photos come out great

If you're looking for a small sheetfed scanner that doesn't take up much desktop space, this product is for you. Otherwise, I'd buy a better (and faster) scanner.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good...
I just installed the Strobe XP 100 scanner under Windows 2000 Pro. It was easy to install both software and hardware. This is my third Visioneer sheetfed scanner in 6 years. I have found them to be useful and reliable, but, as others will tell you, tech. support is weak. My advice is to try it and, if it works from the get-go, you will probably have a good experience. If you have problems with the installation, you may be better off sending it back and buying another brand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good idea. Lousy execution
This is my fourth-and probably last--Visioneer scanner. And I plan to return this one. If you already have PaperPort (I had version 9.0) you have to completely UNINSTALL it in order to add this scanner. (Huh?) And removal is not straightforward. (Read some of the troubleshooting instructions on Visioneer.com; they should be embarrassed.) The uninstall did not work, so I had to download 2 different files from Visioneer.com to clean up the mess. Finally, PaperPort 8.0 installed, but it never found the scanner. Prompted by the web site, I deleted the twain files on my computer and installing a downloaded driver-which resulted in a strong Microsoft warning that this file was not compatible with Windows. At one point, PaperPort would consistently close immediately after being opened-it didn't crash, it just closed itself.

Meanwhile, the tech support number included in the scanner package was "disconnected or no longer in service." The number provided on the web site has hours so short that I can't use their support for my home computer. And have you tried their touted "SARA" to troubleshoot a problem? Don't bother.

These are just a few of the problems I encountered. I had been perfectly satisfied with my old Strobe (which was also a headache to install), but Visioneer doesn't support Windows XP for the old Strobe. (I don't trust them to support the next OS upgrade either.) If you like nightmares and complex computer challenges, then Visioneer scanners are for you. As for me, I'm going shopping.

4-0 out of 5 stars small size makes it ideal for new, niche uses
First--this is not a flatbed scanner; so keep one handy. This is not a high-speed sheetfed either; don't try to use it for those purposes and things work out well.

This scanner is ideal for portable scanning--the kind of scanning where you go into a library, or an office, or other location. Use it as a fax replacement for printed docs, as an alternative to photocopying and carrying, as a convenient device for sorting and recording receipts, bills, and what-not while traveling on the go, and it works great.

Many earlier gripes compared this scanner to very different products--or simply slammed it for lack of support. (No problems with my scanner so far, after scanning 2000+ pages for five months, so I can't vouch for support).

The interface seems intermittent: sometimes, I have to unplug/replug the scanner after a particularly long job, and it seems pretty random. That slows things down, but isn't a fatal flaw.

Still, for real estate, student, legal, design, and other niches, this scanner is ideal. Don't like it for it's portability? Try lugging a flatbed or fullsize sheetfed + power supply to the library!

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm a disbeliever now too
I read the previous reviews, didn't believe it, and now have a non-functioning scanner. Buy something else. ... Read more

This is a decent scanner with respectible specification. It works as well as comparible scanners on the market and includes a good software bundle. But do yourself a favor and buy the Xerox Documate 510 if you like this scanner. It is the exact same hardward/software bundle with a different name on the front for almost half the cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars customer support
I purchased this scanner, and it worked fine until one day the document feeder stopped working. For a few months I thought It was something I was doing, and worked around it. I finally called tech support, and was told I was out of warranty. Said ok, I will pay to get my ADF fixed. They do not fix anything. If you are out of warranty, you are stuck. Connected to Customer support, same thing. Can you imagine buying a car, and after a year, the tranny went bad, you were told you have to buy a new car because they do not fix cars over a year old. This is the type of company that has made us a disposable society. How can you charge $600.00 dollars, then when it breaks, tell the people to buy a new one. Something stinks with this logic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Specs
This scanner is faster & quieter than the similar HP product I tried. HOWEVER, it does NOT scan at 42 bit color or 600 x 1200 dpi using the Paperport software provided. Visioneer tech support said I needed to use Adobe Photoshop (not included, of course) to scan. I tried that and it still scanned at 24 bits and 600 x 600 dpi. After 3 calls & 1 email, Visioneer finally told me that it won't scan at the advertised levels with the Paperport software and that I needed to buy new software and/or consult another vender's tech support if I wanted to scan at 42 bit/600 x 1200!! It doesn't measure up with their provided software or even the gold-standard Photoshop 7. UNBELIEVABLE!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't yet had a complaint
I had to replace a UMAX 5420 this morning, found this unit at another local ***'* Club for $92.30, installed it, and HOLY CRAP! It is FAST! Scanning from within PS took around 10-13 seconds for a preview, from the time I clicked "Preview", happening in real time. A 300 dpi scan took just about as long. My UMAX would take 1-2 MINUTES JUST to warm up before scanning, and Lord knows how long to do the actual scan.

The color of the 9320 scan at 600 dpi is MUCH more accurate than anything I've used in the past, pretty much dead-on, at least so far, with wonderful color saturation and little to no artifacting. The couple of pics I've scanned so far have come out better than ANYTHING I've EVER scanned with three other scanners I've had, although I'll look out for problems once I try to do 35mm stuff...

I haven't encountered a problem with this unit as of yet. I would hate to be disillusioned because at the moment I'm thrilled to have it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Visioneer 9320 - Send it back to Alpha testing.
Review Visioneer 9320:

+ The side open covers is a nice feature.
- The user guide is not up to date for the current release - 8.x.
- The software installation aborted and required an extensive search of the Visioneer web site to locate utilities to remove Registry entries.
- The 35mm Negative scan terminates at high (>4800) resolution.
- The 9320 is available for $25< @ competitive outlets.
- No configuration option to keep the Scan Monitor from loading at Start-Up.

Summary: Don't waste your time or money here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of control
Lacks the size and quality control of the Epson Perfection series as well as other scanner models. Also, the copy function is black and white only. Every other scanner I have owned (including Epson and HP) is capable of direct color copies and I was very disappointed that this one only copied black and white. You can scan in color to the OCR, but the OCR decided I didn't have a printer despite the fact that my printer was in it's list of possible choices. The scanner worked fine directly with the printer, but I needed to make color copies and this product wouldn't do it (surprising considering my other scanners cost far less and could do so much more), so I returned this frustrating product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't try to scan slides or negatives
I bought the Visionerr 9320 along with a Dell XPS computer. It will scan picutes beautifully but will not scan 35mm negatives or slides, which is the reason I bought it. Customer help is "no help". I have the latest drivers, etc.. Very frustrating. I suspect , as the other reviewer said, I have too many other items connected by USB ports, although I am not running anything else when I am attempting to scan negatives. Anyone buying this scannner for scanning slides and negatives will be dissapointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Scanner conflicts with digital camera
Ever since I hooked up the scanner, I've been unable to download pictures from my Canon S40 digital camera. If I unplug the scanner cable, the camera starts working again. I made sure I had the latest driver for both devices and then called customer support.

Customer support said there is nothing they can do. They claim Windows XP does not allow a scanner and a camera to be connected at the same time (yeah, like nobody has ever done this before). When I mentioned to the tech that an older Visioneer (USB) scanner and the same camera worked together just fine, he said "Wow, that's weird"! When I started to talk about a refund on the product, I was disconnected. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Love the scanner, hate the driver. Be careful!
I have owned a number of Visioneer scanners over the years and have always loved their capabilities for the price. I was a loyal customer and used, sold or recommended nearly a thousand of these scanners. Some of the features I liked best were:

- the top of the scanner opens on the vertical, 11" side, making it much easier to scan boxes.
- the driver remembered the last scan and would retain the settings. So if you were scanning multiple similar items, there was no need to keep adjusting the scanner settings.
- the scanner's reliability. I have had great luck with these scanners lasting longer than the computers they worked on.

And so I expected to see this trend continue with th 9220. I believe the hardware is up to the usual standards, but the driver isn't. Unfortunately, I can't even use this scanner.

I have tested it on 3 different computers (Windows 98 and 2000) with:

- Microsoft Photo Editor
- Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9

and it doesn't work! The Visioneer driver crashed both of these programs! So I called Visioneer. After being hung up on twice (I was asking very politely about this problem. Once I got hung up on by the voice mail system, and once by a tech support individual who told me he was going to research the question); I was told the Visioneer doesn't support any third-party software other than PaperPort!

I have always liked Visioneer scanners, but I can't possibly recommend the 9220 unless you are a fan of the PaperPort software, and understand that PaperPort may be the only software you will ever be able to use with this scanner. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated user
If you like the poor working device with NO support - the Visioneer CardReader is just for you!
I have tried to download and install all recommended updates but it doesn't work.
The customer support is unacceptably awful!

4-0 out of 5 stars buy from mfg for $99

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Does Not Cut It.....
I had to return this scanner because it did not capture text near the edges of most of the business cards, no matter what I tried (Calibrating, Re-Orienting and re-feeding the cards). Updating the scanner drivers with the website download did not help. Visioneer's online support is unacceptably awful. Also, the bundled OCR software is not up to the task. The trial version of Corex Cardscan which I loaded for comparison performed much better with more accurate text recognition and field placement. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed at all
This is my second Visioneer scanner and although I liked the first one (replaced because the glass broke), this one has been a hassle. ALL of my pictures scan in with a red tint to them. I have been to their web site with no answers to help me and I refuse to call tech support since they charge $2.00 a minute. I've come across a similar complaint on the web with no solution. This is not a scanner I would recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value, But A Little Tricky to Use at First
For the price, you get a reliable machine that produces high quality scans.

Maybe it's that I was used to another brand scanner and scanning software, so this software was a little tricky for me at first, but I'm a little less than thrilled with the scanning software package that comes with the 7100. I'd like to use VueScan, but it's not compatible with Visioneer scanners.

It seems that once I delve into the details in the manual, I may be able to control more of the scanning process from that aspect in order to do less clean up work in Photoshop. ... Read more
