Amazon.com Product Description

Screen your calls and take advantage of power of 2.4 GHz technology at the same time with the Uniden TRU246 cordless phone. In the world ofcordless phones, higher is better when it comes to frequency. With 2.4 GHzdigital spread spectrum transmission, the Uniden TRU246 offers superiorpower, security, and clarity.

Forget about the short-range, static-plagued cordless phones of the past.Basically a low-powered FM radio transmitter/receiver, cordless phonestoday use higher frequencies with shorter wavelengths so radio wavesencounter less interference. In 1998, the FCC opened up the FM range above2.4 GHz to cordless phones. This frequency is far above the rangeaccessible to most scanners, and gives phones like the Uniden TRU246 arange of up to 150 feet indoors.

In addition to 2.4 GHz power, the TRU246 offers digital spread spectrum(DSS) technology for security and greater sound clarity. Based in part on aconcept invented by 1940s screen actress Hedy Lamarr, spread spectrumtransmission switches rapidly from frequency to frequency at random. A DSSsignal needs less power and encounters less interference.

A cordless phone like the Uniden TRU246 is even more useful with caller IDand call waiting/caller ID. Order this service through your local phonecompany, and the phone allows you screen calls even as you talk on thephone. When someone calls, caller ID allows you to view the caller's nameand number on the LCD display before you pick up the phone. The caller-IDmemory holds up to 50 names and numbers. Caller ID/call waiting allows youto view call information on an incoming call while you're on anothercall.

With the Uniden TRU246, you can program up to 20 numbers into the memorydial, similar to a speed dial, for instant access. The AutoTalk featurelets you answer a call just by picking up the handset--no need to fumblefor the "talk" button. Hang up simply by placing the handset in the basewith the AutoStandby feature.

The phone handset's batteries last for up to six hours of talk time and 10days on standby. The Uniden TRU246 comes with a rechargeable battery pack,AC adapter for the base unit, wall mount, and belt clip. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Buttons Again
The buttons on our unit stopped working too after a couple years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good until the buttons stopped working:
I was pretty happy with the phone until, shortly after a year, the buttons became increasingly harder to push. I've contacted Uniden and they said they would only fix it for free if it was a "known problem." Not surprisingly, they said this was not such a case. Now what I want to know is if anyone else here on Amazon has had this same problem? If so, let's make it "known" so that Uniden will either fix it for free or give us a replacement. Though at this point, I'd rather have my money back than rely on their products and Customer Service again.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRU246--An Update
It's been two years since my first review of my cell phone...it's still going strong on the original battery! I use a Jensen headset and an over-the-ear kind for hands-free talking. When watching tv with a friend from another state by phone (don't ask), I do notice the phone beeps "low battery" after four hours. This is a little disconcerting, especially if you're watching figure skating or an award show! However, it's not bad service for a phone I've had as long as this one. I suppose the solution there is buy another cordless for your spare jack and pick it up when the beeping starts.

I'm sold on cordless phones, still don't understand why people want to treat them as if they were wireless. Corded phones aren't and never will be. I believe good phones DO cost over $.. unless you buy them used. I also don't believe there is any one phone that will satisfy everybody's needs. My phone has never not work, keypad perfect, reception perfect.

I will say that I don't like the style of the newer model Unidens, so I can't say what my second phone will be. If they still made the 246 or 248, I'd definitely buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buttons stop working after a while!
I loved the phone when I first received it.However, after around 4 months the buttons stopped working.I basically need to jam my finger about an inch into the phone in order to dial a number. It sounds like a common problem with this phone. I suggest staying away from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop here!
If anyone is looking for a phone, look no further. This is the best phone I ever had! {and I've had many] The clarity can't be beat. I highly recommend this. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some serious issues, but overall works fairly well
There is an irreparable problem with file sharing between computers on the LAN and wireless clients (YEP!), and I haven't been able to get DMZ to work (but got around it by opening ports manually).

But for sharing internet, and wireless function -- no complaints.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uniden desperately needs a firmware update
As stated before the router does split your internet connection. However, even if you do not upgrade your to 1.08 you still can network between wired and wireless computers.

This seriously limits the function of a router. Instead this device should have been labeled as an internet gateway.

Calling this device a router is a misnomer. Hopefully Uniden will address this issue.

Because this product does have potential. If this issue was fixed I would give it 5 stars if you can buy it for less than 30.00.

I think outpost had it for that price.

Sincerely

2-0 out of 5 stars Only work for casual tasks, does not work on my VPN
For casual internet surfing users, this router may satisfy their needs without problem. However, for more serious users, this router has problems. First, do not upgrade the firmware to 1.08 that listed on Uniden web site. That particular firmware will block the communication between wired and wireless computers connected through that router. Second, I cannot make this router work with VPN of my company. I tried several other brands routers, they all work fine except for this one. If Uniden is able to fix those two problems then I will be more than happy to give it a four stars rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly good
I ordered the WNR2004 AP/Router and 2 Uniden PCW100 USB Wireless Adapters from outpost.com.

WNR2004 - $39.99, before $20 mail-in Rebate
PCW100 - $9.99 each, before $10 mail-in Rebate
Overnight Shipping - $11.30

Total $71.30, before $40 mail-in Rebate. This brings total cost to $31.30 for an 802.11b wireless network capable of 2 wireless machines.

Setup was a breeze until I started playing with advanced configuration, then it got to be a bit of a headache.
Connect the AP to cable modem and power, connect USB adapter to PC, install Drivers, and it immediately connected with the AP upstairs in one corner of the house, and the USB adapter downstairs in the other corner. Excellent signal strength, and 11.0 Mbps speed.

Configuration is web-based, and when you apply changes, you are told changes were saved and asked if you wish to reboot the router now. This is where I started having problems. Most of the time, if I chose yes, it would disconnect, and the Adapter would no longer lock onto the AP until I went up and physically rebooted the router. Seems it wasn't properly rebooting when I chose yes.

I quickly figured out the trick to this - choose no to reboot, then go to admin options and tell it to reboot there.

128-Bit WEP setup, and disabling the router broadcasting its' presence was no problem, changing network name and channel likewise was no problem.

My only major complaint so far is that the MAC access control says it is for enabling/disabling certain MACs from having internet access, not network access in general. I would prefer being able to completely block all MAC addresses from accessing the network at all, and from connecting to the AP, rather than just blocking them from internet access. There may be a way to do so, and I just have not found it yet.

Overall, it's an excellent product at an extremely cheap price (where I bought it anyways), with only a few small flaws. Solid 4/5. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great bargain but what's the point?
Its hard to beat the price. Most radios would cost more without a charger! But there is a catch. The radio output is 0.5W. Far less than the 2.0W allowed by GMRS. So this radio is only as good as a FRS radio with 7 extra GMRS channels.

But bare in mind that using GMRS radios require a license. If you are buying this for a child and not getting a license. It is like teaching him it is okay to break the law. And if you know what you are doing, why bother breaking the law for a half-baked GMRS radio?

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Product and Value
What a pleasant surprise!Because these were so inexpensive, I was skeptical as to whether they would work for our intended purpose. We purchased these radios so that my husband could contact me from his workshop which is separate from our house.Except when he was running his power equipment, these radios came in loud and clear through several thicknesses of walls. The only reason I didn't rate these a "5" is because the instructions are terrible and took both of us to decipher.I'd recommend these to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value for 20 bucks ever.
I've wanted a pair of 'shopping radios' for a long time. They needed to be rechargeable and come with batteries and charger. They also needed to be the slightly more powerful GMRS radios, not the weak FRS. These fit all categories.

What I was not prepared for was the price. I found these on a shelf below the GMRS peg wall at Wal-Mart, with no price indication. All the other GMRS packages with batteries and chargers were priced at $59.99 and above. I took this package to the register to ask what it cost. When the man scanned it he said, $20.

Needless to say, I bought them. Now whenever my family goes anywhere--to the park, to the mall, wherever, I have one of these and my wife has the other. They have no problem covering an entire mall while remaining intelligible. Outdoors, they are even better. There is absolutely no way any other brand new $20 product can touch these.

Sure, you can spend hundreds and get GPS or greater range, better clarity or longer battery life (these are actually very good in the battery-life department) but will it be a hundred dollars better? Only if you have to have GPS. In that case sure.

If you are like the other 98% of us, these radios will satisfy you in all the ways that matter, and any extra money you spend on fancier versions will be wasted.

5-0 out of 5 stars FCC license required
In the manual it is stated that an FCC license is required to operate these radios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works very well for the price
I've wanted a pair of these for awhile now. Especially for when I shop with others who usually end up not where they're supposed to be. Though promised shipment in 2 or 3 days it took more than two weeks for them to be shipped. This could have been because I used the free shipping. Otherwise, the radios have a nice distance to them. I walked more than a mile away from my house while another person sat inside. We had no problems understanding each other. The radios also are easy to figure out how to set up and use. I also like the different call sounds that can be selected. They clip nicely to ones belt or can be put into ones pocket. All in all, I should have bought a pair of these a long time ago. It was nice not having to run back and forth in stores trying to find missing shopping members this Christmas. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Prices are going way down on Uniden's GMRS 380 2-way radios!
After purchasing a pair of 380's for my wife and I, we are pleased that we only had to pay 25.00 USD for these units. Best Buy was blowin them out as a clearance sale. The range is only as good as line of sight, that is to say if you were on top of a tall building and could see the person to whom you were transmitting to, you might get the advertised range of up to five miles "as the crows flys". R.F. power out is rated at 2 watts! On the other hand, most people use these units for short distance communications, and can be satisfied with maybe a mile with objects in the way of the r.f. that is being emitted. All IN ALL THEY WERE WORTH 25.00 FOR THE PAIR, GIVEN THE OLD ADDAGE,"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR".

2-0 out of 5 stars GMRS 380-2 by Uniden
I purchased this product because it was the best deal for what was advertised on the package. I returned this product for not coming close to matching what was advertised on its package. "Up to a 5 mile range" was what was promised, however, transmissions were unintelligible after 3/4 of a mile and stopped completely after only 1 mile. I could also hardly make sense out of what was being said to me over the radio during transmissions. This model performed worse than other types that I had tried that only had a 2-mile range. ... I had planned to keep them and just use them at the fair, mall, beach,etc... but crowds of people REALLY slaughtered the range on these puppies. ... In all fairness they weren't a total hunk of trash, but save your money and go for a better model or manufacturer all together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMRS-380
Very nice size. Uses AAA batteries (small) so batteries won't last as long as AA. The volume/on-off control rotates the wrong way. Doesn't have the volume of the Motorola FRS/GMRS radios so hard to hear in noisy places. Very positive tactile feel on transmit button so good with gloves. Battery charge contacts on outside of case so can be used with drop-in charger. Controls very intuitive and logical. Does not have compass or stopwatch so no confusing menus. Display has large digits but no backlight. Nice small size. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with all devices.
This switch works great with my desktop's 3Com 3C905TX ethernet card, but it won't communicate with the integrated Intel 10/100 ethernet port on my Toshiba Satellite notebook. I had to place a Linksys device between the two to get them to communicate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for weather updates, horrible for communication
I used brand new Duracell batteries with these radios, and the reception was still horrible. We had to repeat ourselves about 5 times for the other person to understand what we were saying. The only good (nay, excellent) thing about these radios is the weather updates. Perfect for camping, especially when you see flashes of light in the distance (turns out where we were camping had a severe thunderstorm watch, which turned to a warning while we were leaving at 2 AM). Possibly saved our lives, because the next day it was reported that someone else who was camping nearby got struck by lightning. However, there are other things available for that purpose. These things are junk for 2-way radios, but lifesavers for weather warnings. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very poor reception
Good battery life, nice caller ID features, but I've had such difficulty with the reception I couldn't possibly reccommend this phone. As some the other reviews have mentioned, I get constant static almost everywhere in my home.Maybe you'll have better luck in your home, but beware.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
The features are great, reception good but the power supply went out after 9 months.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible reception
The only reason this phone is getting a single star is because of its features (i.e. caller id). However, in terms of reception, this phone is inferior to any other phone I have ever used. It's clarity is even sometimes worse than my cell phone. I have nearly constant static even when I'm standing virtually on top of the base. Stay far, far away from this phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice feel, bad reception
I love the feel of this phone, but the reception stinks.I got static on the phone not more than 20 feet away from it.Get a phone with DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum) and stay away from the non-spread spectrum phones like this one and the Uniden EXI-376 (900MHz)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great quality for the price
I shopped around for a low-cost cordless phone for weeks. This was the third unit I actually bought and brought home to try.It is a great unit!It the features I needed: caller ID and the 2.4 GHz.Calls are crystal clear. The handset sits well on your shoulder, for those "no hands" moments. The coolest feature is how the handset sits in the cradle with its screen showing, so you don't even have to lift the handset to see who is calling. In all, this phone is very much worth its cost. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Uniden Cordless phone doesn't work.
Uniden cordless phone quit working after 4 months (bought NEW). Customer service gave us no satisfaction after calling and talking to 2 people, and thru their web site. They only told me to mail it back, at my own expense, and they would try to fix it. It would take "at least 30 days". It would not hold a charge no matter what we tried, and we tried everything. I told CS I wanted another new phone because I only have antique dial phone to use for the month. They were neither helpful or courteous. BUY SOMEWHERE ELSE, their Customer Service is no service.

Uniden cordless telephone quit working after 4 months. It would not hold a charge, and believe me we tried everything. I called customer service and talked to 2 different people. I even tried emailing them. The only help they would give me was to send it in, at my expense, wait at least 30 days, and they would try to fix it, and send me the same phone back. They did nothing to help, even after explaining that I did not want to be without a phone for 30 days. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. This phone stinks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Phone Sucks! Don't get Sucked in by the Low Price!
I bought this phone for my college dorm room and it is a complete dissapointment. If I charge it all day, the battery might last for 20 minutes, otherwise, the battery lasts for about 10 minutes. If you are more than 20 feet from the charger, then all you can hear is static. The only good thing about this phone is that when you can hear, its pretty clear. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget this card & keep shopping
Dropped signals, made 2 different computers hiccup & stutter, and no new driver release since 2002 (just for fun, try going to uniden.com & see how long it takes you to find 'em). Never worked for more than a few minutes at a time, even with the router 5 feet away. Forget Uniden wireless products & look for something else. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars i'll never buy uniden again...
I bought this phone and another Uniden phone just over a year ago to replace two old cordless AT&T phones I have had for almost 10 years. They both worked fairly well for a few months, not as good reception as the old phones, but no complaints. Now however, most of the buttons on this one don't work anymore. I have to call from saved numbers or put the phone down and use an object to press very hard on the numbers. Also, a huge complaint...the batteries die VERY quickly. Pieces of junk. My friend who had bought a Uniden right before me recommended it to me...hers is not working well anymore either. I just bought 2 new AT&T phones...hopefully they are as good as my old ones!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid phone--NOT Great, however.
It's everything a phone should be--clear, convenient, holds its charge well, etc.. I like the feel of the handset. However, the speakerphone .... It's in the base unit, so if you are dreaming of putting the handset down for hands-free use while you cook in the kitchen or whatever, dream on. Only one person can speak at a time with the speakerphone--if one person is on the handset and another on the base speakerphone (a common arrangment when my wife and I are phoning family), the speakerphone cuts off while someone else speaks. That is, you can hear them, but they can't hear you until everyone shuts up and waits a second or two for the speakerphone to turn back on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible phone
I bought one new. Terrible interference when using a headset. Returned/ replaced. Terrible interence persisted. Terrible phone- stick to the 900 mhz.

3-0 out of 5 stars I returned the lastest version-- the Tru3485DSS
I returned this phone as it had an annoying echo/reverb sound when speaking into it. Listening to others speaking to me--well--they sounded great. But when I spoke there was this nasal, echo, sound of my own voice--I just could not stand to hear it!!!! Others listening, had no such sound. Quality to them was great. I bought a panasonic KX-TG2563 (which the sound quality is the best!). Problem solved! But this phone does not have an answering machine--I use a separate machine--as I did not like the quality of the panasonic answering machine system. The two I bought (KX-TG2583 and KX-TG2670N) had a "grown sound" between messages, when playing the messages back? I returned both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone and great value
This is the second unit Im buying of this model. I havent been a big fan of Uniden products, but this has been outstanding. The setup and ease of use is very good. The buttons are all in the right place, and its easy to hit the desired control quickly. The sculpted buttons have a nice feel and feedback is good. The overall comfort and heft of the handset makes it a pleasure to use. The sound quality is the best Ive seen, and the range is surprisingly good... say 200' through several walls. Ive dropped, kicked, dunked, washed, and generally abused the handset far beyond what I think a phone should be able to take, and it's taken it all in stride. The answering system, while far from CD quality, doesnt have that annoying nasal garble typical of most digital systems, and has plenty of memory. Selective playback and deletion of messages is intuitive. Fast recharge and days of standby battery life so it doesnt have to go back on its cradle often, and the pager/finder is nice and loud so you can find it when it doesnt. I like the styling and the small footprint doesnt take up much counter space in a crowded kitchen. Only tiny flaw is that the flash button is hard to find and doesnt engage long enough to switch over on call waiting; its probably programmable if I took the time to read the manual. By far the best cordless phone Ive ever used. ... Read more
