5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone, great value!
I ordered this as a second cordless. We already had a Uniden and it's great so I thought I'd check this one out, especially with such a great price for a 2.4. I've had Sony, Panasonic and any other expensive brands you could name and in my experience, phones are one thing you DON'T get what you pay for. My cheaper name phones (i.e. Uniden) have always proven to be perfectly usable with great features where some of the others have been troublesome. Anyway, this is stylish and has lots of bang for the buck.
PLEASE NOTE: We thought we were charging the phone for the initial 20 hour period only to find we didn't have the battery plugged in all the way. Apparently, you have to be sure you hear a CLICK to know it's engaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars INEXPENSIVE but Very Good
I bought one for my cubicle at work and rather than spend big bucks on a fancy model and risk someone stealing it, I opted to go with the least expensive 2.4 GHz Uniden I could find.

I went with Uniden because I bought another model, the EXAI3248, from Amazon and you can tell I liked it from my review of that model.

It still has the same 1.5 - 2 second delay before you hear a dial tone (press TALK and there's about 2 seconds before you hear the dialtone) however the quality and resistance to interference is still there!!! I can talk next to an active microwave and other sources of interference w/o any problems.

I HIGHLY recommend this for people who do not need Caller ID or an answering machine but demand performance and affordability in a sleek package.

I suppose applications would include college dorms that utilize voice mail systems, office cubicles that also utilize voice mail systems, and maybe a secondary phone in a large house. Not every phone on that 1 line needs Caller ID and an answering machine so this would be a good and cheap solution perhaps for a young adult who doesn't take care of his or her things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, so far
I've had this phone for less than a week. Bought it after caving in - my old 25-channel phone just didn't cut it any more, or at least in this new apartment - usually had terrible loud buzzing constantly, and often wouldn't hang up unless I unhooked the jack from the wall!! Also, battery life had become seriously sucky. So far, this new phone has been far better. No problem with the battery, as yet; reception has been great (often TOO loud, have to turn the volume down!). However, several times (while sitting at my computer, don't know if related) I've gotten strange, loud beeping noises which went away after switching the channel, and just today I heard someone else's voice which alternated with the beeps as I switched channels, then finally all the extraneous noises stopped. I have no idea what is going with these noises, etc., but still, overall performance is far superior to my old phone. And the price is quite right. As noted, it's a basic phone, but as I've got a separate little caller ID unit I don't need that in my phone. We'll see how things work out long-term, but overall I'm quite satisfied with this purchase. One additional issue: when trying to cradle the phone using your shoulder, one must be careful, because the END button is situated right where you naturally want to put your cheek to support the phone - I've accidentally hung up a few times.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
This phone picks up microwave frequencies. I thought 2.4 GHZ were not suppose to do this. Also, I will charge the battery overnight, and then when I'm on a call, I get that darn beeping sound alerting me my battery is about to die. This is a brand new battery. It shouldn't do this. I finally bought another phone which I love! I got the Panasonic kx-tga23ow and so far it is the best cordless I have ever owened. I will never go back to cheap phones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible reception!
I live in a very small apartment, so I am never far from the base to this phone and yet the reception constantly goes in & out if I so much as turn my head to the side. Not to mention, I often times have trouble hearing the person on the other end & have to raise the volume all the way up. My mother tried it & agreed, she said it was like talking into a tin can. I am very disappointed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent volume and big directory!
If your looking for a phone with clarity, volume and the ability to hold up to 100 names and numbers in the directory, look no more!

Advantages:

* The caller ID and directory share the same memory so let's say if you have 75 names in the directory you have 25 memory slots left for caller ID info. As your directory grows your caller ID slots grow shorter.
* Lots of clear volume.
* Easy to read display

Disadvantages:

* Cannot send directories to other phones
* Cannot add any more phones to system (2 phone limit)
* No speaker phone in base
* Wish phone had caller ID and directory matching. When someone calls thats in your directory it would come up on the display as it is shown in the directory
* END button is really to small. I wish Uniden would have just used the TALK button made to also end the call.

With everything considered these phones work well and should be considered when looking for a 2.4GHz cordless phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cordless Phone
I've had problems in the past with cordless phones: reception, range, ease of use, general feel of the phone in your hand. But this phone seems to pull everything together in a very nice package. Granted I live in an apartment and range requirements are minimal, but the reception is very nice (no static), the phone is very easy to use (the buttons are nice size), you can dial a number before connecting (in case you mess up), and the phone fits very nicely in my hand and against my ear. I would highly recommend this phone. The second unit is also a nice touch, particularly since it doesn't require a phone jack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Cordless Phone Ever!!!
I purchased this phone to replace a single handset 900 Mhz Uniden phone that I loved. Since I am a gadget junkie I decided to go with the 2.4 Ghz, and to my surprise it was much worse. I read someone else's review that compared it to a cell phone, but my cell phone is more clear. I would recommend no one purchase this phone. It is a great concern that you can not even count on consistency from the manufacturers of cordless phones. Every time I buy a new phone, I always end up buying a different brand in order to find the quality I am looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Already Own Uniden TRU4485-2
I purchased the TRU446-2, because I wanted to add two more headsets to my existing Uniden TRU4485-2. Of course, good idea, bad implementation. The headsets are not compatible even though they look identical. Turns out the "-2" means that the maximum amount of headsets that will work with either base unit is two. So, instead of working as one base with four headsets, I really have two bases with two headsets each. Funtionally, I'm able to do what I originally wanted. However, I have to make sure the right headset goes on the right base! Nonetheless, I decided to keep them. Besides, I paid only $54 at Target for the TRU446-2. I'm happy with the headsets as they do what they are supposed to do. Sound quality is not the greatest, but I've never had a problem hearing or speaking. My only complaint is one of the headsets voice goes out. I have to bang it on the counter to get it to kick in. Once it works, it works fine. I have a feeling this is a defect as I've seen this complaint in another review. I'm hoping this does not occur on the other headsets. If it does, then I will give up on Uniden and buy a better quality system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value and an extra phone
What I like most about this phone is the extra hand set that does not need to be conected to a phone line. The main phone is coneceted to a line and the expanded is not allowing it to be very mobile. The only drawbacks are it is asmall phone so the buttens are tight and smal. As others have mentioned the charging station is a bit loose. Al in all I feel that it was a great deal for $65. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good Choice for an Economical 900 MHz Cordless
This EXI376 is my second Uniden cordless telephone. The other is a TRU346, a fine 2.4 GHz instrument, selling for about $$$ I bought this one, the EXI376, as an economical replacement for a cord-type bedroom phone that failed to operate after over ten years of use. I am happy with my choice.

Amazon's product listing here is very sketchy. It tells next to nothing about this device. It is a modest 900 MHz cordless phone with a ten-number AND NAME dialing memory, one-number redial and one-number RocketDial, for twelve stored-numbers total. It has a thirty-number caller ID, and can place a call from this list. Like many, most or all Unidens it displays the number to be called on a viewing screen for the caller to review for accuracy before placing the call. No more wrong numbers.

I have had some bad luck in the past with cordless telephones. One never did operate; one lasted only two months; a current one of another brand is in use in our guest room, but is inferior in all respects to the EXI376. The last cordless would work for only ten minutes before its battery went dead. The TRU346 revealed to me Uniden quality, and I would now buy no other brand.

Reception is clear and audible. It tends to be too loud, but the instrument has a volume control. It is slightly noisy to listen to, noisier than the TRU346, but is acceptable. People I have called say my voice sounds fine to them, as good as on any telephone. Our microwave oven does not create noise on either end of the call, but the computer does. The TRU346 was not usable with the microwave running, because the base unit is installed on top of the microwave (my bad). Battery life of the EXI376 appears satisfactory, at present. I used it for one long call, and experienced no dead-battery difficulties.

Range is modest, no better or worse than others we have had, except for a DSS 900MHz that failed for other reasons. That one would work at a distance of about a city block. This EXI376 works with the handset anywhere on our small residential lot, but fails to communicate when I carry it two houses down the street.

In summary, the EXI376 is an excellent choice for those who want an economical cordless 900MHz telephone. There are better phones available if you want to pay more money, but if you do not want to spend between fifty and two-hundred dollars, consider the EXI376. I give it a five-star rating for price and quality, but reduce the rating to only four-stars because of the slightly scratchy reception. That may be unfair to Uniden and Amazon, because I would buy another EXI376 without hesitation if I needed another.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice for an Economical Cordless Phone
Note: October 2002 Consumers Reports rates the Uniden EXI376 HS (head set) as a CR Best Buy! It is their top model without an answerer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for its price, but wont last....
bought this phone seeing the consumer reports best value.
it was pretty good for a year, now the sound quality is terrible and very staticy. so be prepared to replace it after a year, which isnt that terrible considering the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inferior Quality
I am very disappointed in the quality of this model. I purchased two, and I'm returning both. Coverage is poor, and CID does not work in all outlets in my house. Very strange. Uniden customer service pretty much confirmed that this model isn't very good. I'm much more satisfied with my Panasonic. I'm going to order a couple more of them to replace the Unidens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
This is a great cordless phone. I was suprised at how clear it sounded.

I love the caller ID function. When someone calls you you can go back and see what day they called and what time they called.

This phone is very easy to program. You can store up to 10 numbers in the memory function. You can also store peoples names in the memory function so if you hit memory, a list of peoples names will come up and all you have to do is hit talk.

Overall its a great phone, simple to use, and sounds very clear. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but one feature that needs improvement
I have bought this phone because my previous 2.4 GHz cordless conflicted with WiFi network in my house. Although I expected only a fair quality from this product, I can say that this product has done quite good a job so far.

It's compact, it has a good design, it's reception is stable and clear, and it has a long lasting battery - although often we left it outside of the cradle for one or two days, we never experienced a situation of its not working.

Plus, like some more expensive telephones, it provides a few convenient features, including quick dial number function. Its so-called rocket dial function provides for me capability to save calling card toll-free number and my account's password, and even several numbers of my friends.

My only complaint is that its quick dialing function does not provide for a phone number memory big enough to save the toll-free number + password + dialed number. So, I have to press a few buttons to reach my family in Korea. For a foreigner like me, it's a bit painful, but I guess this does not matter much for most Americans. Thus, quite recommendable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value for the price!
I was looking for a cheap replacement after I spend 250.00 on a cordless phone 7 years ago from ameritech. It would have cost me 50.00 to have it repaired or replaced and since they don't have my phone anymore, who knows what I would have gotten. I decided to shop at my favorite shopping site and sure enough I came across this phone.I bought it and love it.It's lightweight and I've been told it is clearer than my last phone.I just bought my mother one today for her birthday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value!
This phone is an excellent product for the money. If you need a good no-frills cordless, you can't go wrong with this Uniden.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Charge
The sound quality is just fine, but as another reviewer stated, it's difficult to charge this phone since the contacts between the phone and the base are very tempermental. Fortunately, this phone holds a charge pretty well, so I don't have to fiddle too often with the base.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Phone
It's pretty static free, and I can go out in my yard and hear people clearly still when on the phone. It also has a nice paging feature for when forgetful people like me forget where they left the phone!

It's also pretty good on battery life, I am not constantly recharging this thing like I was my last phone!

It's not top of the line but at $12.88 you can't beat the price for a cordless phone! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone, excellent price
With this phone Uniden has eliminated an annoying design issue with previous models where it was very easy to brush the Talk button with your cheek and hang up on the person you were talking to. Now the button is recessed. Sound quality is very clear, and range is good - you can walk out of your house and a block away and only have minor static interruptions. In your house you may as well be talking on a corded phone, there is no difference in sound quality. The display and memory/speed-dial functions are a bit weak compared to what you see on cell phones today, but they compete with other cordless phones. This isn't very important to me, since I store numbers on my cell phone and not my home phones, but if it is extremely important to you you might want to look at other phones. All in all I think this phone is an excellent value, and Uniden phones in general are good quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional clarity, good features, and nice looking to boot
This was my first cordless phone, and I was nervous about sacrificing sound quality by going cordless. After reading reviews and checking out phone appearances, I chose the TRU346. I was delighted to notice no difference in clarity between this phone and my corded one. I can take it down two flights of stairs to my basement and have no problems with reception. My only complaint (and there may not be any cordless phones that do this better) is that the caller ID and redial features compare unfavorably to the cell phones I am used to. Caller ID only stores a 10-digit number, so if you forget to press "1" before redialing someone who has called you long distance, the call does not go through. As the Caller ID memory stores 50 numbers while the speed dial only stores 20, I tend to use the caller ID memory as a phone book. I wish, therefore, that you could edit the caller ID info when it is incomplete (for instance, changing "Wireless Caller" or "Georgia" to the person's name) and save it in memory. (Or have a larger phone book that would display the approrpiate person's name when they called as on a cell phone.) But these are small quibbles with minor features; in performance, where it counts, I have no complaints. And to top it off, the phone is great looking, and doesn't take up much space.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone compared to its peers
I bought this phone from [a local retailer] after having tried 3 other 2.4GHz phones at the same price point (GE27930, VTECH 2420, Panasonic low end). By the time I opened this phone, I was carefully keeping each part of the packaging in anticipation of having to return the phone.

After the mandatory 20hour charging period, I finally tried out the phone and was very surprised by the sound quality. While the other phones exhibited static, white noise, very low transmit and/or receive volume, or feedback of my voice into the earpiece (which made for a weird echo), this phone's sound quality was exceptional, even out on the driveway. My room is down in the basement, but I was able to walk to the furthest room upstairs without a loss of signal quality (the GE, for example, gave me static as soon as I was 20ft away from the base, and was completely useless upstairs).

As far as the other features are concerned - I don't have CallerID, nor do I plan on using the directory, since my cell phone stores my numbers.

The only things that I would have liked to see would have been
1. a mute button.
2. a NiMH battery (it comes w/ a NiCD)
3. a speakerphone could have been a bonus, but not a necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I have had this phone for years with no problems at all. Love it 100%. The handset is very comfortable and easy to use. I recently bought a second one and wish I had bought a third one. Unfortunately Uniden no longer makes these phones. Uniden made a big mistake by stopping production. I have not found another phone by any manufacturer like this one, not even Uniden's new phones. These phones have batteries that require that they be returned to the base regulary, not necessarily after every call, but DO NOT leave it off until the battery goes dead. If you do the battery will not last very long. Most problems can probably be linked to this issue.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Good
Had the phone for a little over 1 year and the unit just stopped working. Was a good phone until then, just cannot believe the short life it had. The unit does not get a dial tone and talk keeps flashing on the LED. Tried their online support and they had me do this and that stating it would correct the issue; however, it still remains broken. This is the only phone I have had that only lasted a little over a year. I suggest you buy a different brand phone that will last longer than this one. ...

It's not top of the line but at $12.88 you can't beat the price for a cordless phone! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Convenient. Period.
First, these radios don't have a great range (we get about 1/2 mile or so in our neighborhood). They use little AAA batteries. They don't have privacy codes, etc. But, I rarely have one away from my side.
Our old house has an intercom system which probably hasn't worked since the Bradys were happily married. Replacing it would have cost over a grand. FRS to the rescue.
We bought the pair, as well as 12 rechargeable batteries and a charger, and now we just put in the batteries and clip them to our belts or drop them in our pockets and go about our business. The next day, we swap out the old batteries, and they are good for another day.
The squelch works great, but rarely, we get mild interference, so we switch channels. (To be honest, I doubt we do that more than once a week.)
The bottom line is that they are small enough, that you forget you have it on until the other person needs to reach you.
Get a charger, you wouldn't want to have to feed these things batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feature rich and resonably priced
The unit uses AA batteries so they are cheaper and longer lasting than AAA. It has a battery strength indicator.

The unit is feature rich with NOAA weather channel, 22 chanels and subcodes, and even several ring tones. You can turn off the subcode feature to be compatible with older radios. It is compact. It has a keypad lock feature so you can put it in your coat pocket or purse and still receive transmission.

The only drawback is the belt clip should be tighter. It can drop if you bend down to pick up a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product for the price
I purchased a pair of these radios a few days ago ... and have been very pleased with them... I was still very pleased with the performance and range of these units. We seem to be able to get ~1 mile range through some fairly heavy forest without any real trouble, and quite a bit further depending on terrain. The sound quality is quite good, with the person on the other end remaining clear out to the very extremes of the radio's range. The auto-squelch is also nice, although it would be useful to be able to turn it off (which you can do on more expensive Uniden models) as I am convinced that I could get a bit further range that way. These are also really, really small; the entire unit fits in the palm of my hand. For comparison, it's only 2/3 the size of my Nokia 3360 cell phone.

I would have to recommend these radios for the casual user. If you need 5+ miles range under all conditions, you should re-evaluate your price range. If you need some walkie-talkies for family use a few times a year, I don't think you will find a better product. Frankly... if we ever need better radios, these will make great toys for the kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
Does everything it is supposed to do for that price and more. Can communicate with any other FRS/GMRS radio, is lightweight and small, and range is decent. Unless you're in a mall where everybody's using radios, you don't need privacy codes (they prevent you from hearing others but don't prevent others from eavesdropping on you). You don't need charging as the 3AAA batteries last for at least one day of extensive usage.

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPACT/RELIABLE
I enjoy the compactness of the radios. The quality of sound seems to be great so far. Unbeatable at this price. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Range
This phone has a great answer machine on it and the voice quality is superb, but the range is terrible. It may be good for an apartment or a condo, but I couldn't walk through my house without it breaking up, and my house isn't that big. And the instant I walked out the door it broke up, only forty feet from the base! I was disappointed. My recommendation after trying many phones is the 5.8 Ghz AT&T or the V-Tech version of the same phone. I know they transmit 2.4Ghz back to the base but I tested it, there is no interference on either end from micowave ovens or wireless B connections. If you live in a house I would not recommend this phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but needs improvement
I was rather disappointed with this phone for the following reasons: The buttons on the keypad are way too small. I had to use the very tip of my fingers to dial numbers.
It doesn't wall mount - although this may not bother others.
When using the phone, the sound I heard was wonderful, and the range very good - BUT several people that I spoke with complained that my voice sounded 'tinny' and distant. The last complaint\issue is one I have had with all of my cordless phones - there is no backup power for the base unit. Everytime there is a power outage, the time and date have to be reset.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great feature set, Poor Talk Quality and Range
The phone has received high marks from several sources, which is why I bought it. It has terrible range! It clips the voice into pieces which is very hard to understand. I have a brick house which I would consider of average to small size. I cannot go into my basement with it nor into my back yard. I only wish I had spent more time testing it within the 30 day return period. I will be replacing the phone soon. IF THERE is anything you get out of this review, it is to make sure you have the time to put ANY cordless phone through its paces during the store return period.

Also something that is annoying is you cant make a call from another area code from the caller-id list without hitting the * key so that the phone will append a 1 in front of the phone number. I have called customer support and that is the way it is designed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little phone
The price is a bit high for what you get, but it's one of the few options that won't interfere with a WiFi network. Reception, voice quality, and answering machine quality are all good. I was also surprised by how well the speakerphone worked, both on the base as well as the handset.

Only a couple of things prevent me from rating this with 5 stars. First, Caller ID is only displayed on the handset. Second, I wish there was a real battery gauge rather than just a low battery warning.

In all, you won't be disappointed with this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Just got mine and no reception problems, nice range, and no interference with my wifi network. Only limitation is that it can have a max od 2 handsets, but I live in a 1 bedroom condo, so no biggy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TESTED THE UNIDEN 7 MILE RADIO
PURCHASED ON CLEARENCE FROM TARGET=I AM TOTALLY HAPPY WITH THE PURCHASE. THESE ARE CLEARER THAN MY MOTOROLA SP21s PROs. THE SCREEN IS THE BRIGHTEST I HAVE EVER SEEN=PERFECT PLUS LARGE AND EASY TO READ. SIMPLE TO OPERATE NEVER READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. WELL CONSTRUCTED AND PERFORMED VERY NICELY. RECOMMENDED HIGHLY. COULD USE A FEW MORE DIFFERENT RING TONES NOT THE SAME OLD ONES. HAS WEATHER ALERT=WONDERFUL. GOT 3 MILES IN THE BURBS WITH THESE. THATS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. AGAIN ONE OF THE CLEAREST AND CLEANEST SOUNDING RADIOS I EVER HAVE HAD. WELL BUILT AND CONSTRUCTED. I HAVE TESTED ALOT OF THESE FRS AND GMRS RADIOS. THESE ARE THE BEST I HAVE FOUND FOR THE BUCK. RECOMMENDED

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Radio's for the price
I wanted to get something with better range than my basic FRS radios. I went ahead and got the FCC license for these online at the FCC site while I was waiting for them to arrive. If two or more of us were driving on a trip, I wanted something that was clear up to at least a mile. I tested them the other day and I walked about 1 mile down the road. The area between me and the other person was solid trees and they were on top of a mountain and I was down below. At about one mile, we could still talk fine, but the Boost button was needed. That was about the limit thru the trees. I would expect it to be much better in a more open environment. There are only two minor annoyances and the first is you have to wait about 1 second after you push the talk button before speaking. I think this model has the handfree option where you can just start talking, but I don't care for that. The second thing is they feel a little slick on the sides to me. They are not real heavy, but I felt like I had to squeeze a little harder to hang onto it. They do have another model that is the same thing, but has a rubbery outside case and I think it would be a better option. If I order another set, that is what I would get. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Uniden takes scanning to a new level with the hand-held Bearcat 245XLT. This powerful scanner is about the size of a cell phone and has a detachable antenna, making it great for travel and car use. Plus, the 245XLT can scan the standard 29 MHz to 956 MHz frequencies, now including Motorola and EDACS trunked system.

Uniden's integrated SmartScanner technology makes it easy to get the245XLT up and running. SmartScanner automatically scans the nearest 300 frequencies within a given zip code. To set this up, you need to connect the scanner to your PC using the included adapter and connect to the SmartScan database. However, because you are connecting to a 1-900 number, there is a 99-cent-per-minute charge for this service--so be careful how much time you spend downloading frequencies.

You can also track multiple trunked and conventional channels at the same time, scan trunked frequencies, and apply a five-second trunk delay so you can hear both sides of the conversation when the trunked frequencies change. --L.E. Klein ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner Except for Frequency Download
I recently purchased a Uniden BC 245XLT handheld scanner and am generally very pleased with it. It is well designed, well made, easy to program manually, and has good sound quality. My only complaint so far is my inablity to use its new, highly touted "Smartscanner" feature to download frequencies from the Uniden/Bearcat national frequency database via a PC or external modem. To access the database via a PC, it is necessary to go to Uniden's Website, download a small program (that is zipped but not self-unzipping), install the program and, while it's running, dial a 900 phone number that's preprogrammed into the scanner. Unfortunately, it took me many frustrating and unsuccessful attempts to connect with the 900-number database using both my PC and, separately, an external modem before I discovered that my phone company, GTE Communications Corporation, routinely and automatically blocks 900 numbers from being dialed and that there is no way of getting around the block. While the scanner's operating guide mentions the possibility of a 900 block on one's phone line, since I had never requested such a block from the phone company, it had never occurred to me that there would be one as a matter of GTE policy. Thus, before buying a BC 245XLT with the hope of using the Smartscanner feature, a person should check with his/her phone company to make sure that 900-number calls can be made. If 900-number blocking is fairly common among phone companies, I think Uniden should switch to a non-900 number for frequency downloading. Or, if they maintain their policy of charging for downloads, they should consider making them available over the Internet through the use of a credit card and a secure server.

Would-be purchasers of the BC 245XLT should also be aware that Uniden's 800 Customer Service number, once one is able to get through, may be answered by someone who doesn't know much about the Smartscanner feature of the product. The first time I called and told the Customer Service representative that I was getting an "error" message on the scanner screen when I tried to dial the 900-number frequency database, I was told that that was because their server would not be operational for another couple of days. When I tried a couple of days later and still got an error message, another customer rep demanded to know, "Who told you that about our server?" but did give me some useful information about COM port settings in the software I had downloaded previously from the Uniden Website. On my next attempt and next error message on the scanner, a third and different customer rep told me that, after seeing the 1 900- prefix on my scanner screen, I would need to manually punch in the rest of the telephone number on the scanner keypad to be able to make the call. It was only when that didn't work that I called my phone company and discovered that there was a 900 block on my phone line. As a last resort, I called Uniden again and asked if there was any way, other than using the 900 number, to download frequencies. She told me she would have to ask her supervisor and, a couple of minutes later, gave me another 800 number to call. When I called that number, which I think was the Bearcat Radio Club, and told the person who answered about my Smartscanner problem, she replied, "I don't know nothing (sic) about that." As is often necessary these days, I then asked, "Is there someone there who does?" A fairly knowledgeable-sounding person then came on the line and suggested that some purchasable third party software might do the trick. I haven't tried this yet but, in these matters, hope springs eternal, I guess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock Solid
The only reason NOT to purchase this scanner is if you want to have a police scanner that allows alphabetic tags. Some of the newer radios let you program in not only the frequency but a description (alphabetic tag) so that when the radio stops scanning on a frequency you can see the name of the service you are monitoring.

This radio scans fast (100 channels/second) and is very solid in terms of reception. You can purchase a cable and software to program the scanner from your computer (and therefore avoid having to punch in each frequency on the tiny keyboard).

You CAN monitor BOTH conventional and TRUNKED frequencies at the same time! This is a big plus with this scanner as some others (including the 895) claim to trunk but only allow you to monitor either conventional frequencies OR trunked -- but not both.

Some competitors to this radio:

Radio Shack Pro-94: Essentially the same radio in a different case.

Radio Shack Pro-92: Has 500 channels, slower scan speed (25 channel/second), the ability to simultaneously scan both conventional and trunk frequencies. Allows programming via computer. Allows storage of alphabetic descriptions of what has been programmed into each channel.

Uniden BC 780XLT: Not released as of 11-2000 (scheduled for 12/2000 or 1/2001). Supposed to be a 500 channel scanner with alpha tags and 100 channel/second scan speed. Will have all capabilities of the 245. May produce a new handheld based on its design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do some research first before buying
I'm a newbie scanner and was looking for a good, all round scanner. I knew most of the bigger systems out there are using the "Trunk Tracking" technology, so decieded to buy a scanner that could track those systems (duh). After programming the freqs into the scanner banks (daunting at first but once you do the first couple it's pretty easy and quick) I was surprised by how 'quiet' certain airways were. After a little research I discovered that some of the larger agencies systems are actually DIGITAL, and this scanner can not listen into them. That was a little annoying. Uniden now have Digital scanners and Trunk Tracking III capability, so if your area is digital (check before you buy) then you might be better holding off for the newer generation scanner. Apart from that little snafu I am very happy with the product overall and have enjoyed several hours of listening to airport and other frequencies. Wish it could monitor FM and TV audio (I have a radio-reciever, yet can't listen to local radio broadcasts on it, seems a bit weird). There is a gap in coverage between 512 - 805 MHz for some reason, so I miss some airport tower chat. Not a huge deal. In summary, ignore some of the hype that it has Trunk Tracking II capabilities, if your area is digital, it makes no difference. I'll probably wait until the prices come down to a sensible level and get a digital & analog system. Happy Listening.

I have always had a curiosity about "scanners", but never quite curious enough to buy one. I received a rather generous gift certificate for Christmas this year and decided to get something I might not ordinarily buy. I chose this particular Uniden, Bearctcat, Scanner. As stated in another review, to the beginner, the "art of scanning", can seem a little overwhelming. Rest assured, any effort exerted in learning how to use this scanner will pay off with many hours of listening enjoyment. My Bearcat II has been rock solid thus far and is for all intents and purposes a quality, user- friendly product. The manual refers to "third party software" that allegedly allows you to program your scanner using your PC. This software is quite pricey though. I would recommend spending some time learning your new scanner and determine how much you care to invest in this hobby before spending another 40.00 to 70.00 on software. Some of my friends who initially scoffed at my scanner purchase were quite shocked by the amount of information available via the airwaves. Several have now purchased one. I live in a Major City and continue to be amazed by the well-choreographed "dance" between dispatcher and L.E.O. I worked for a very tight knit S.O. for well over a decade, and as a natural consequence, I understand the terminology. A novice will want to pull many of the codes from the Internet and either learn them or have them easily available for reference. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!?

Amazon.com Product Description

Some of us need much more from our phones than just a little redial button. Sometimes a flash feature simply isn't enough. For users who demand extensive features, Uniden's TRU5865 delivers. Functioning at a quiet, nearly interference-free 5.8 GHz, the phone uses digital transmission for exceptional range and minimal static. The three-line LCD handset display works in conjunction with caller ID services, storing 100 names and numbers in addition to the speed-dial presets.

The dual speakerphones (both on handset and base) let you talk hands-free or get the whole family in on the conversation. And yes, the phone does feature the basics, like flash, pause, hold, and redial with memory storage of the last three numbers dialed. In addition, you can dial either from the handset or from the base. The phone is expandable to accommodate additional handsets. An NiMH battery and 90-day warranty are included. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking?
5.8GHz is a *requirement* if you use WiFi (802.11a/b/g) in your house or if you have other wireless technologies that typically get garbled when the 900MHz or 2.4GHz phones are used. I have had absolutely NO reception troubles in my 3300 sqft house and the clarity is superb.

The phone's looks are top-notch. Black and silver is a very slick look for a modern household. Might look a little funny if you're style is country or traditional.

Caller ID works well and the 2-line display is very helpful. Voicemail indicator is also nice.

The biggest surprise feature for me was the speakerphone in the handset! I've used this several times (it's great when you're on hold somewhere or when you need several people to talk at once) and love it!

I was happy with the menu navigation, although I thought they could have offered more features (like... perhaps the ability to control the volume of that LOUD, annoying beeping every time you press a button). The menu seemed sparse to me.

My biggest two gripes with this phone are not petty and not trivial at all. They are showstoppers, in my opinion.

(1) The phone will NOT work well in states that require 10-digit dialing and a +1 in order to dial in-state. In Michigan, for example, I have to dial 1-248-555-1212 to call my neighbor (ok, so that's information, I digress).

Putting My Neighbor in the phone book as 248-555-1212 results in:
- The inbound works fine (caller ID shows up, custom rings sound if set)
- BUT you cannot dial using the phone book or caller ID redial. This is because both will try to dial 248-555-1212, which will not work! Our phone system requires 1-248-555-1212 to be dialed. There is NO setting for this on the phone.

If you think you can be sneaky (like I did) and set the phone book entry to be 1-248-555-1212, then:
- You can call with the phone book, BUT
- Inbound services don't work (no custom rings) and you STILL can't redial them from the caller ID.

In effect, if you live in a state that has converted to full 10-digit dialing and a 1 is required to dial 10 digits, don't bother with this phone. It's slick, but it's unforgiveable that the engineers missed that one considering the first phone I bought myself in 1985 had this capability. Yay, progress!

4-0 out of 5 stars welcome to the latest band available for phone communication
The new 5.8 gigahertz band has only been available for phone use very recently. The higher band means less interference from many household appliances and even other phones using the same band.

I bought this as a replacement phone for another brand of phone that died. I am very pleased with the sound and distance quality. Supposedly, you can be up to a mile away and still connect, but I have not tested this. I have been able to be in my backyard (my phone base is in a room at the front of the house) at a distance of over 50 feet (I know how far my garden hose will reach) without degredation of quality.

Not only does the base allow near full-duplexing quality speaker phone, the handset is also capable as a stand-alone speaker phone.

The new band means a shorter antenna length is needed, so the antenna is almost invisible.

There is an audio phono jack on the side to accommodate a 1/8" handsfree head/ear set, but such a device is sold separately.

My biggest gripe with this phone is the ridiculously short belt clip. It is literally only 1" long, which means all you have to do is bend over and the phone drops. If they provided at least a 2" long clip or one w/ a spring that would grab a belt or fabric, that would have been preferable.

Another gripe is the so-called "custom ring" feature. I enable the custom ring, but the regular ring is still just as loud, but rings in tandem with a little tune - quite annoying.

Also annoying is the 4-clicks to delete a record from the caller ID. The phone is feature-packed with menu buttons, but not too intuitive - you really need to read the manual thoroughly to know what does what.

The mute button on the base is great, and there is one on the handset as well.

You can save number in a "rocket dial" directory for speedy dialing.

The talk button is also the flash button, so there is a separate button labeled "end" for terminating a connection.

The unit will support one additional handset in tandem w/ one in the base station which is a nice feature that not all phones have. I'm saving up to get the additional handset so I can have one in my kitchen.

There is a light in the handset that is supposed to illuminate when you have new voice mail, but my light has never come on, even when I have voicemail waiting for me... also a bummer that gives this phone a less than perfect rating. All in all, though, I must say this is one of the best portable phones I have ever used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone!
I have had this phone for over six months and I think it is just terrific. The handsets with built-in speakerphones work great, although I have not used them often as I tend to think speakerphones are rude. In fact, I have been so happy that I purchased additional handsets and placed them all over the house. I have also purchased several sets as gifts and everyone that has received them have appreciated their clarity and ease of use.

While I understand a few others have been disappointed, my experience has been quite the opposite. I simply think this phone is simply great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this phone strictly because of the Uniden reputation. It was to replace my 6 year old Panasonic which was missing its antenna and still worked somewhat decent.

Within a 30 foot radius of the base the Uniden sounded excellent and it's features such as distinct ring and phone book were very impressive. But as soon as I walked beyond 30 feet the phone would completely cut out and I would have to run back to let the caller know I didn't hang up. I was shocked and disappointed that this happened to a 5.8 gigahertz Uniden and attempted to solve the problem by reading the instructions fully and relocating the base but nothing worked. (Yes I scanned all the channels manually and automatically without improvement.)

I decided to return it instead of an exchange because I felt with such clarity within 30 feet and such poor performance beyond that, that it was not a lemon but just a poorly made phone. Another reason I believed it to be a quality problem is because I had a similar experience with Panasonic. Their older phones worked spectacular but the new models are garbage too. I don't know if this is a sign that companies feel they can produce cheaper quality products and sell them due to their past reputation and get away with it or just a strange coincidence. For now it's back to the Panasonic without an antenna.

This was my experience, hopefully yours is different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
The guy posting below MUST have gotten a lemon. This phone has great reception and sound quality. PLUS, this is THE ONLY TRUE 5.8GHz phone on the market. The VTech he loves and the AT&T ones transmit 5.8 GHz tothe handset, but the handset transmits back at 2.4GHz. You don't hear the clicks from a wireless network interfering, but your calling party does. And it still slows down the wifi connected computers. ... Read more
