3-0 out of 5 stars Old scanner. Still going after all these years.
I inherited this scanner from my father a few years ago when I was in college. At the time I had a Dell running Windows 98. Then I upgraded my system and am now running Windows XP Pro. The original driver didn't work, although XP had a generic driver that would let the scanner work with limited options.

All I did was search for "umax 1220u driver" on Google and I was easily able to find sites offering the Umax driver that will work with Windows XP, for free.

The scanner and the VistaMax software it comes with still work great! Sure it's not as fancy or small as newer scanners on the market but it does what I need it to do and it was extremely inexpensive. Free!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst company ever for support
You cannot download drivers from your website. Instead they want to force you to buy a CD of their drivers.

Never never never buy from UMAX. Send them a signal lound and clear. Their company is paid for by the customer. They need to get the message that the customer does not serve their needs! They serve the needs of the customer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst of the Worst
What's in the wolrd that they charge for driver software. They are on the way to get to chapter 11. Poor quality.

1-0 out of 5 stars umax products $ucks!
do not buy umax products... it is a total waste of money.
most of the time the drivers and software provided by the company does not work with the operating system you are using. in order for it to work properly you must go to their web site and download a patch that supposed to fix the problem but instead the patch conflicts with other softeware such as camera software or even the operating system (one more thing the drivers and patches at their website are not free).
I wrote to umax and they have never responded to any of the emails i have sent to them. I decided to call the support center and I was refered back to the website to download another patch. (very bad customer support)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect support from Umax.
Will not work with XP despite downnloaded drivers and patches. Umax wants to sell new drivers but I'm not willing to risk more time and money on something that Umax should be supporting without cost. Trash day is Tuesdays here if you are pre-XP and looking for a deal on a scanner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Images, although slow and buggy
When I owned this scanner I thought the image quality was top noch. Colors were acurate. Details and sharpness were good.I was using on a Win98 machine. However, it was very slow and I kept having to reinstall the twain drivers because they would get corrupt causing green or black scans. It was much worse when I switched to WinME. Then when I upgraded to WinXP I just got rid of it. I have not been to happy with what I replaced it with, the Epson perfection 1660, so I'm currently looking for another scanner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than a 70's Clunker running on unleaded gas
I've had this "scanner" for about 3 years now. Let's put it this way: I had time to go watch an episode of Friends while this thing completed a 300dpi scan. It has given me nothing but trouble from the beginning, and the other reviews are correct in that there is no support for any new OS's (Win 2000, XP, etc.) short of purchasing new drivers from the manufacturer. Umax is a bunch of daft cretins if they actually think anyone will waste their money on such inferior support. I was fortunate enough to find a pirated copy of their updated drivers (it came from overseas and was in a different language) so I could use the scanner with XP. Surprisingly it worked but that didn't stop the errors and incredible slowness this machine is notorious for. I wish Amazon would add negative stars to their scale.
I hope other potential customers will steer clear of it and find another model, even another company. You'll be much happier.

2-0 out of 5 stars UMAX Astra 1220P - Support Issue
Scanner works well with Windows 98. However, is now obsolete with Win-XP unless I purchase an updated driver from UMAX. I am not happy with this hidden cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Umax will rip you a new one
Buy Umax only if you will never upgrade your software. If you plan on upgrading your operating system in the future Umax is not the way to go. Any time you need to upgrade drivers for say a new operating system or if you lost yours, unlike most other computer manufacturers, Umax will not let you download drivers for the upgrade. Instead they will mail you the drivers for just [money amount]. Real customer service.

2-0 out of 5 stars Home use of Umax Vistascan Astra 1220P
For infrequent home use, this is really not a bad scanner for the low price. However, it does not hold up well to frequent use. Image quality is what you would expet from a lowend scanner. After about 1 year, I started to get colored lines through the image. These will disappear if you cycle the unit in preview mode several times. Even with this problem, at $...you can afford to throw it away and get a new one after a year. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With driver software that makes the scanning process easy and a USB interface that makes setup simple, the Umax Astra 2000U offers hassle-free scanning. This scanner also includes a comprehensive software bundle for editing and managing your images.

To set up the Astra 2000U, we followed the included quick-start guide. We connected the USB cable from our PC to the scanner and the AC adapter cable from the scanner to the outlet, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the Umax setup wizard. The software setup process, although automated, was lengthy, taking about 15 minutes.

To test the Astra 2000, we started an imaging application on our PC and used its Scan command to scan a magazine photo. The Umax VistaScan driver software started automatically and, after a short delay while the lamp warmed up, showed us a preview scan. (VistaScan consistently waited for the scanner's lamp to warm up even after the lamp was already warm.) VistaScan has Beginner and Advanced buttons at the top of its window; the Beginner screen includes icons for color photos, printed material, text, line art, and Web images. We selected the working area on our preview scan and clicked the Color Photo icon for a final 300-dpi scan, which took 45 seconds. VistaScan automatically exported the image to our graphics application. The image had an unsightly moiré pattern, so we repeated the scan using a magazine descreening option. The new scan took 110 seconds and showed a significant improvement. A third scan at 600 dpi took 125 seconds but looked only marginally better than the first scan.

To test optical character recognition (OCR) abilities, we scanned a single page that contained two columns of text plus some line art. The scan took about 50 seconds, including OCR translation. Caere's OCR software ignored the line art and created a two-page document with a single column of text, which it then exported to Microsoft Word. The two-page formatting was unexpected, but the interpreted text was correct and the OCR software did a decent (though not perfect) job of recognizing fonts. You'll want to explore the well-chosen bundled applications, which are designed more for home use than for business.

  • PC and Mac compatible

3-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner for the price
This is a nice scanner for the money. I upgraded from a lower resolution, parallel port scanner to this one, because of the price and it was a USB scanner. I have been using this scanner for a couple of years with no problems. I have run it originally under Windows 98, and currently under Windows XP Home Edition.
Yes, there are better scanners out there that will do more, but for basic scanning needs and the price I would recommend this scanner if you are looking to save money and still have a good basic scanner with good quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SCANNER FOR THE MONEY!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great value for +/- $$$
Every item has a price point vs technical capability. To a certain extent, you get what you pay for. Yes a 2400 X 2400 48 bit scanner is better, but would be pricier. If you want a capable scanner for scrapping, internet use or using your scanner for fax purposes - this is a great scanner. If you are looking for more precise results, check into more current models with higher resolution and higher bit capability.

I just purchased the Umax Astra 2000U and find it quite capable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Creeping Red Death
DO NOT buy this scanner for anything other than light, casual use! I am a graphics professional and will be kicking this scanner to the curb as soon as my new one arrives.

For a few months now, every picture scanned looks like it has had Pepto-Bismol dumped on it. (This problem has existed since purchase, but has gotten steadily worse.) Picture contrast is muddy and awful. The color-correction sliders built into the scanning software do diddly-squat, and whatever filter it comes with that theoretically removes dot-screen from printed material is a joke.

I spend so much time in Photoshop fixing what the scanner did to the originals that it's actually become more efficient to drive to a friend's house, scan the pictures, upload them, drive back to work, and download them.

That's sad. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Astra 2100U makes scanning easy. With the touch of a button, you can scan or copy images or text documents and export them to popular applications. And with the USB interface, you get quick, painless Windows or Mac setup.

Hardware setup was easy and straightforward following the included quick-start guide; software setup was lengthy but automated and essentially problem-free. We connected the USB cable from our PC to the scanner and the AC adapter cable from the scanner to the outlet, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the Umax setup wizard.

To test the Astra 2100, we started an imaging application and used its Acquire Image command to scan a magazine photo.

We selected the working area on our preview scan and clicked the Color Photo icon for a final scan.

After performing the final scan, VistaScan automatically exported the image to our graphics application, where it appeared with an unsightly moiré pattern. We returned to VistaScan and, after finding a No Descreen option, changed the option to Magazine and repeated the scan. The new scan took 121 seconds and, although it had no moiré patterns, the image was a bit softer than we expected.

To test the Astra 2100's optical-character recognition (OCR) ability, we scanned a single page that contained two columns of text plus some line art. The scan took about 55 seconds, including OCR translation. Caere's OCR software ignored the line art and created a two-page document with a single column of text, which it then exported to Microsoft Word. The two-page format was unexpected, but the interpreted text was correct, and the OCR software did a decent (though not perfect) job of recognizing fonts and font styles.

Finally, we explored the well-chosen bundled applications, which are especially fun and helpful for managing digital photo albums. Overall, the Astra 2100U is a nice scanner with a good software suite for a reasonable price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better then expected !
I purchased the Astra 2100U ,mostly because the price point for a 32 bit scanner was hard to beat. A little nervous on how it would perform ,however I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up removing all of the software bundled with this product except the VistScan software and the Adobe PhotoShop Home Edition 3.0. I like the ease of use on the copy utility, and use it often. FYI ,I have a P3 750 256M.B.SDRAM O/S WinMe , Iam using ver3.53U of the vistascan software, those having probs and are running WinMe or WinXP can download ver3.55 , I have'nt had any probe so Iam sticking with the originial ver off the installation CD ! If like me you dont use a scanner often, and cant justify spending alot on one ,this is the way to go ! When I frist recieved the scanner I noticed some smugges on the under side of the glass, UMAX support replied quickly to my concerns about this and supplied directions for opening up the case and cleaning the glass top and bottom. I also was concerned because I accidently had the scanner light on all night ,they said if the bulb was to burn out they would replace it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Umax 2100u and Windows XP
I bought one of these about 3 years ago and it has given good service, running on Windows 98.

I now have windows XP and as other reviews have said, the software provided with the product does not work at all with XP. However, the critisism in some of the reviews above is not up to date. I have loaded updated software from the Umax site, which was free and works fine with XP. In fact it appears identical in use with the software initially provided.

I still think this is a good scanner, although it is a bit dated and bulky by today's standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner
I received this scanner free from a friend who has bought a new one and I replaced my old ulead scanner with this one. I love the simple use of all of the programs and there is no need to always set up size and pixels settings as in my other one. I don't know if I would have purchased this one to replace my old one but since it was free I am giving it a try and so far I am very pleased. I am running windows me and have had no problems...

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
Initially my scanner worked quite fine and I was pleased with it...however, every time I signed out of it, it gave me an error message. I had removed the software on my computer and went to re=load it all....when i did my scanner Umax cd....it froze my computer up....I had no where to go for help. The place I bought my computer said " you must have a UMAX" and so you'll have to put in your "start up" cd. They said to contact You for help and you could give me an on-line down load to get my scanner to work again (since the cd is no good). I still don't know where to contact you...so I'm trying this and hope you read this and give me some information. I guess there's no use in having this scanner when it won't work with this cd. HELP

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother with UMAX
I have used UMAX scanners since 1996 (the 1220S and 2100U) and had fairly good luck with them until recently. UMAX customer support has always been pretty much non-existent but their scanners had a good following so one could always find a solution to their screwy driver problems if one looked around on the web. With the advent of Windows XP however, you might as well throw your UMAX gear away. Their parallel port scanners are not supported at all and the SCSI and USB scanners are supported only if you buy the new drivers at a cost of [money amount]. What is worse is that the XP drivers that they sell you don't work at all. Don't get sucked in!! UMAX is trying to rip you off by selling you driver software that won't install and they do not provide any useful support once you paid the money. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This scanner connects to your PC's parallel port for quick and easy setup with almost any Windows-compatible computer. Paired with a well-designed driver and a complete software bundle for editing and managing your images, Umax's Astra 2000P offers hassle-free scanning.

To set up the Astra 2000P, we followed the instructions in the quick start guide. We connected the parallel cable from our PC to the scanner and then connected our parallel printer to the scanner. We plugged in the AC power and installed the software from the CD-ROM. The software installation process was mostly automated, installing several applications consecutively. In our case, installation of the last application (OmniPage OCR) failed, requiring us to install it manually--a process that turned out to be quite tedious.

We tested the Astra 2000P by starting an imaging application and scanning a magazine photo. We selected the working area on our preview scan and clicked the Color Photo icon for a final 300-dpi scan. VistaScan automatically exported the image to our graphics application. The image had an unsightly moiré pattern, so we repeated the scan using a magazine descreening option. A third scan at 600-dpi looked only marginally better than the first scan and not as good as the second.

To test OCR abilities, we scanned a page of text that contained accompanying line art. The scan took about 40 seconds, including OCR translation. Caere's OCR software ignored the line art, created a two-page single-column document from our single-page two-column original, and exported the document to Microsoft Word. The two-page formatting was unexpected, but the interpreted text was correct. The OCR software did a decent (though not perfect) job of recognizing different fonts. You'll want to explore the well-chosen bundled applications, which are designed more for home use than for business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded up and operated quickly and easily
This was my first scanner purchase, and so far I am very pleased. The hardware hook-up required minimum effort, and the software loaded on the first try. Within an hour of start-up, I was scanning and printing, with good results.I would recommend this product to anyone, especially the first time user.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extra cost w/win XP
Used scanner w/W98 with so-so results. Upgraded to W-XP.
Scanner doesn't work w/XP. Sent in $15 to umax for CD that
was supposed to allow 2000P to work W/XP. Re-installed soft-
ware from CD umax furnished, no go. Tried to e-mail umax for
some help, but ran into a long jump-thru-the-hoops process that
did nothing but frustrate. So, I now own a 2000P door stop.
If anyone is thinking about buying umax, I would think long &
hard about their products.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yellow bands and no XP
I used this scanner with great results for a year or so... was very happy with it. Then I started getting yellow bands on my scans (as have MANY OTHER PEOPLE -- most haven't been able to get rid of them). I haven't attempted to see if I can get rid of them because I upgraded to windows XP and UMax doesn't provide an XP compatible driver.... wonderful scanner... for a year.... if you have Windows 98...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner for newbies!
I found the quality and speed to be just fine especially scanning pics for my web page. The software offers all of the options with regard to resolution, size and the various choices you may want to make for a scan if you are a more experienced user. It's a parallel port scanner so it won't work with XP but it runs great on win98. It might be good to use on a second system with Win98 or maybe for the kids on their system. It's not the best but I believe it's a decent scanner that can be found for an inexpensive price now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't get it to work with XP
Now using Microsoft XP but can't find a driver to bring it up past 98. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't throw your money away
I bought this router because it seemed to be a technically superior quality product. It worked fine for about 9 months. After that it would operate with only one computer. The customer support is awful - I couldn't get any - so my only option was to throw it away and buy a new one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not expect customer service!
This unit worked fine for several months. Now that it's inexplicably stopped working, however, I can't seem to contact the company to get it fixed! They don't answer e-mails, they don't answer their phone, their technical support forum is down.

Because of the neglect and frustation I have suffered over trying to get this fixed, I cannot recommend this product. I will not be purchasing a Ugate router in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars great way to share dsl connection on network
Used since Feb. 2000 with no problems. I sold to one my customers, still works , replaced with ugate 3200. Has DHCP and firewall, will uplink to another hub for more connections.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crapola. Thing lasted me 5 days past warranty expiration
This thing was great while it worked. Thought spending the $200 would mean I was getting something that would last a while. Well, 5 days past warranty expiration and the thing pukes. Dead, it turns on but I can't get to the interenet through it. The lights just flash. Pretty cool. I bought a D-link Firewall for half as much hoping to get atleast as much life out of it. What a piece of CRAP.

1-0 out of 5 stars UGATE Return policy - Beware
If you purchase a Ugate-3000 keep in mind UMAX's return policy. My Ugate-3000 worked fine for 26 days, then it stopped working. I called UMAX tech support and I was told that it sounded like a hardware failure. I should box it up and send it to them. (I pay shipping) They will take a look at it and if they find that it is broken, they will ship me another one. I assume the turn around time for this has to be at least shipping both ways, which would be two weeks, plus however long they keep it to "look" at it. I suspect that it would be around 3 weeks before I see a new router. I called eCost and because it was less than 30 days, I asked for a replacement. If you can go without a router for a month if yours is broken, think about the ugate 3000.

EDIT: This router finally died after the warrantee expire. I would not suggest produces from this company. Try Netgear. ... Read more
