Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 43A62 puts high-end video within reach. The 43-inch 4:3 projection set offers a host of picture-enhancing technologies and convenient features. The set's proprietary PowerFocus lenses and PowerFocus HD CRTs achieve a 10 percent increase in brightness and a 25-percent increase in sharpness over conventional CRTs for crisp. Originally used only in HD projections TVs, these CRTs are now finding their way to Toshiba's analog projection TVs.

ColorStream component-video inputs provide the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. You get two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

While most CRT's can create a fairly precise, round beam spot in the center of the picture, many create a less precise elliptical beam spot at the edges and corners. Dynamic Quadruple Focus utilizes both horizontal and vertical beam adjustment to ensure that even the edges and corners also have a precise beam spot for a sharp, uniform picture from corner to corner. TruView is a suite of video circuitry that includes Black Level Expansion, Fine White, Flesh Tone Correction, and Color Detail Enhancer. This system ensures true colors and more accurate picture detail, for a more natural and realistic video image. High-contrast TheaterShield serves the dual purpose of providing screen protection and improving contrast, while direct video input selection simplifies source selection. The set saves optimized settings for any input source. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy vivid, high-contrast pictures from Toshiba's 32-inch FST PURE flat television. Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features, the 32AF62 makes a great upgrade to a DVD or satellite-based home theater. The set's large, FST PURE ("flatter square tube") tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed, and Toshiba's Dynamic Quadruple Focus ensures precise resolution from corner to corner.

The 32AF62's three-line digital comb filter and vertical contour correction further enhance resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Meanwhile, velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

Two other technologies--black-level expander and color-temperature control--work with brightness levels to enhance image quality. Black-level expansion improves contrast (which results in a sharper, more three-dimensional picture), while Color Temperature Control (Warm, Medium, Cool) gives you the ability to easily adjust the set's white balance to achieve the best picture possible, regardless of room lighting.

The set provides stereo reception (with five watts per channel) and SAP (second audio program), which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 32AF62 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from its double-baffle speaker system. A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources.

Dual-tuner multi-window PIP lets you view two channels at once without the use of a VCR as a second source. Multi-window functionality lets you scan through all the channels via six small boxes along the bottom of the screen.

You get two sets of rear AV inputs (both with S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 32AF62 also features color-temperature control, V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and an illuminated remote control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I've had this TV for a week now and I'm glad I purchased it... Features I enjoy are the picture quality, 2-tuner PIP (including all channel review), menu operation, ability to use sub-bass without speakers, and size (it fit in my cabinet!). Features I wish this TV had include display of program information (my 6-year old Mitsubishi has it) and sound leveling (for those noisy commercials). The picture when viewing DVDs on my Toshiba DVD player via the component video link are superb, but the picture can be grainy when viewing 'weak' cable channels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 20AF43 20" Flat Screen TV
This TV is a great value. The picture is clear and crisp and the audio is terrific. I have owned Sony's and I think this set is at least the equal if not better in terms of picture and sound quality. The big plus is it is less expensive than its Sony competitor and has more features.

I read the other reviews on this page before making my purchase. The report of the hum is valid however if I hadn't read about it before purchasing it, I don't think I would have noticed it. The hum is really hard to detect so I don't consider it a negative. I have satellite tv so I only used the Toshiba remote for set-up and minor adjustments and didn't find it to be a problem. I use the satellite remote as the primary remote.

I took advantage of the Super Saver free shipping. Combined with the low price, this was a very good deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't purchase a better TV
I just purchased the Toshiba from Amazon.com, and I couldn't love this TV more. I have spent weeks searching for the perfect TV for my new home theater system in my bedroom and I settled on this TV, because of great reviews, options (such at video out - that allows you to watch cable on your external speakers i.e. home theater), and style. The picture quality is sharp and flawless (almost as if you were watching HDTV) and with a DVD and the Colorstream component video option, the picture is even better. Sound quality is also good, with no humming as with other flat screens. Options seem endless. With easy menu navigation and tons of features, this TV is a steal from Amazon. Also, I ordered this TV and recieved it in 2 days flat w/free shipping, no tax, and up-to-the minute status of your order. If you want a TV for your bedroom, this one is perfect in every sense. When compared to other brands, Sony is about even, but very expensive and all other brands seem to be much lower quality. You won't be dissapointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV
Awesome clarity and sound and the price gives it the best bang for the buck. Although the remote control is a little awkward... 99% of the time I'll be staring at the TV and not the remote so it isn't that much of a problem. I have indeed heard the infamous humming noise from the back of the TV, it is a little annoying but I have gotten use to it plus it can only be heard when the sound is on low or mute. Overall I couldn't be happier and this is coming from a college student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV, lousy remote
I considered a lot of different 20" flat screen TVs and finally decided on the Toshiba 20AF43 because, for me, it really hit that sweet spot between price and features. It has a great clear picture and good sound, plus along with regular RCA a/v inputs, it also has both S-video and component video input. However, it isn't as pricey as the equivalent SONY KVFS100, which doesn't even have all the same input options. So although I have generally been a Sony person in the past, I am generally very pleased with the Toshiba and am enjoying having a TV I can actually see from across the room, even though the set isn't terribly huge (a plus in my book).
However, I am deducting a star for the terrible remote control. First, the remote that comes with the Toshiba is very picky about where it will work -- perhaps I am just used to being able to vaguely point the remote in the general direction of the TV, but this one you really have to have it very precisely angled or it won't work at all. Plus, on several occasions I have done something mysterious with the remote that caused me to lose all control, even if I try it again up close to the TV. The only way I got control back was to turn the TV off and back on again. Also, when I entered the code to have the remote control my (Sony) VCR as well, it no longer worked for the TV. Finally, the number buttons are really awkwardly placed at the top of the remote and it is very hard to enter in specific channel #s that I want to jump to, especially if I'm trying to hold the remote at the magic angle at the same time. Can you tell that I'm irritated by all this? I will probably purchase a universal remote to use instead...
The TV itself is great though!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
No humming noise on my end. I don't know if the other reviewers were somewhat unlucky & got a malfunctioned TV, but I hear no humming noise what so ever. In fact when I mute the TV sound, I hear no sound at all. Anyways this is an excellent Product. Very clear picture, great sound (surround & BBE), and I love the 16:9 feature! The component video (need a special component video cable Red Green Blue) with the DVD player (Toshiba Colorstream both ends) makes DVD's look amazing. Why pay $... or more for a Sony TV with an inferior quality picture & less features? If I have to find a fault then I would say that the text on the remote control is too small (only fault I can find, nitpicking). Best TV purchase I made, highly recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture and sound quality
I have had my Toshiba HDTV now for over a year and I am very pleased with its performance. I compared it with the Sony WEGA and found that I liked the picture quality better on the Toshiba. The Toshiba has a flesh tone color correction that makes people look a lot better as compared to the Sony WEGA (perhaps the Sony has this feature but the salesperson said it didn't). When I compared the HDTV picture to picture with the Sony again the color and quality of the Toshiba was as good or better. Since in my area there are only two channels that the local cable provider has in HDTV I was much more concerned about the quality of the cable shows not in HDTV and in this area the Toshiba delivers- the IDSC II upgrades standard cable signals and it looks great.

The 36hfx72 is the same exact television as the 36hf72 but has improved sound and bass response. The cost between the two sets is higher and I planned on not getting a surround system for my small room. The sound on the set by itself is quite good but I have decided to go ahead and get a surround sound system so if you already have one or plan to purchase one in the future you should probably go with the cheaper 36hf72.

Overall, a great set that I highly recommend. ... Read more

85. Toshiba 30HF83 30" TheaterWide HD-Ready TV with PURE Flat Screen

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's state-of-the-art, high-definition-ready 30HF83 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. It boasts not only two high-definition component-video inputs, but also a digital video interface (DVI) for a direct digital connection with your HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver. And it's stocked to the gills with picture-enhancing technologies.

The 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Meanwhile, Dynamic Quadruple Focus improves edge and corner focus so you can enjoy legible text and graphics even at the outside of the screen.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pull-down switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The 10-watts-per-channel 30HF83 offers a little something--well, a lot of something--extra in the bass department: Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS), which heightens the impact of low-frequency audio, and a built-in, 13-watt CYCLONE subwoofer, which conserves floor space while making sure you feel it in your bones when the T-Rex stomps its way across your screen. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices).

Starting to sound complicated? Don't sweat it. Toshiba's QuickConnect guide walks you through the connection of your antenna or cable box, your initial channel scan, and other setup functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Picture & Sound and the perfect size.
I spent a month looking at widescreen HDTV's looking for what would be best for my living room. I watched this TV side by side next to bigger projection HDTV's and the Sony widescreen HDTV's and this Toshiba was clearer than the projection tv's by a mile and showed flesh tones and colors equal or better than the Sony XBR. Best of all, it fit in my current entertainment center, which formally housed a 27" TV. It is as clear as the plasma and LCD's but at half the price. It has all the latest digital connections so it will grow with the latest technology. Don't make the mistake of buying the biggest screen you can find for the same money, the projections screens only look good with a perfect direct view and if it will also be your everyday TV, watching the news and regular shows on a 40-50 inch screen can really be draining and overpowering on your eyes.
If you buy this Toshiba, you won't be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good TV, good price, no reservations
I bought this TV even after looking at the negative reviews and I'm glad I did! Good picture quality and features and the sound with the subwoofer is better than any other TV built in system I've heard, although it can't compare to a good surround system.
When I took delivery, I unpacked the TV and tested it before signing the acceptance form - not a big deal. The delivery guy was quite nice and even helped me put the TV in my entertainment center. This 30" widescreen fits where a standard 27" Sony used to, as the Toshiba speakers are wisely mounted beneath the screen.
Set up is easy, the instructions clear. Don't worry about burn out on the sides - the available options to set up the screen result in a good picture and the horizontal streching on the sides for "theater 1" (which is what I use for standard format TV) is almost unnoticeable. Great picture from digital wide screen sources!!!
The other TV I was looking at was a Gateway 30" LCD. Without the optional side speakers, it would have fit my entertainment center as well. It's lighter than the Toshiba, but I don't think it's worth spending $1500 more than the Toshiba. Plus, if I'm lazy and don't use my surround system, I can just turn on the TV and listen to a reasonably good sound and look at a great picture. The Gateway without the side speakers would have forced me to use my sound system every time I turned the TV on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV at a great price
This is my second week with this TV, purchased for $799 - an UNBELIEVABLE deal when compared to other sites and other TVs. Haven't tested dvi but the component hd signal is outstanding - dvds are very good and hd tv signals are very clear and crisp.

The sound is very, very good for an "all-in-one" set. This unit includes a subwoofer that has its own settings, very impressive.

Decent remote although I am having a little trouble with it commanding my jvc dvd.

What a deal -

1-0 out of 5 stars Well this was an interesting online shopping experience!
I ordered a Toshiba 30HF83 on 6/29 after finding it priced on Amazon @ $799. I was quite impressed with the specifcations of the tv as well as the online reviews. Now mind you, I have ordered several things on Amazon in the past without incident, but this one seemed to take an interesting twist.

The expected delivery date (when I placed the order) was 7/15. I was ok with 2 or so week delay in getting the set as this seemed like such a good deal. Well today (7/16), I got an e-mail from Amazon stating they were cancelling my order because they cannot find a tv to send me.

Meanwhile I log onto Amazon tonight and search for the 30HF83 Toshiba and see it here for $943 and it will ship in 1 - 2 days. Intersting eh?

Well, I feel as though I was bait-switched. I have written to Amazon about the experience and I will also write to Toshiba. This was very frustrating to say the least... It would have been nice to get some communication a week or so ago, stating the risk of not finding any of these tv's, or if Amazon would have simply locked me into the original price and told me I had to wait another week or so.

Anyway, sorry for venting here... seems like it would have been a fantastic tv set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture!!! and well worth the price.
I was very reluctant to make a major purchase on line but did so because of an Amazon $100 gift certificate I had recieved. The Toshiba 30HF83 was perfect since fit my entertainment center and did not have the side speakers. The sound is very exceptional and I wonder why more sets are not made with this in mind? I had found most people with nice entertainment centers do not want to replace them. This set fit perfectly in place of the old 27" set I had. The picture is excellent connected to by Direct TV. I can't imagine what a High definition picture will be. I do want to try a HDTV tuner soon but hav not found one in the right price range. Also any sets with the HDTV tuner built in was reflected in the price.
I would do it all over again. The only problem I had was that Amazon did not pass along my contact phone number to arrange the residential delivery. As for the delivery personnel from Eagle shipping was very exceptional and did work with me once they had my phone number. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features, the 27A62 is a great TV to complement a DVD player or digital satellite receiver. The 27-inch set offers Toshiba's high-contrast FST Black picture tube and convenient dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP), so you can keep an eye on the game without missing your favorite show.

The FST Black picture tube offers a flatter screen than Toshiba's popular Blackstripe tube, one that further reduces ambient light reflections and provides finer dot pitch and increased resolution. This tube increases the screen's viewing angle and improves linearity over standard tubes. A three-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped Y-shirt). Advanced velocity-scan modulation also works to improve definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

The set features stereo reception (with 2.5 watts per channel) and SAP (second audio program), which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 27A62 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from the double-baffle speaker system. StableSound monitors audio levels between programs and commercials.

A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. Included are two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook up to a surround-sound receiver.

The 27A62 also features GameTimer (which monitors the duration of viewing), V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark remote control that controls most manufacturers' VCRs in addition to the 27A62. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth a few extra $$$ for quality
We bought this TV, because we wanted a good clean picture without having to fork over a lot of money for a HDTV or for a decent flat screen. Figureing in a few years we can buy one of those for much cheaper. This TV while not being flat, does not have a lot of glare and the picture is very crisp. It is especially crisp when playing DVD's. The quality of the picture does have a downside though, it does show some of the flaws with cable. I guess with a cheaper TV the mess all blends in.

Some of the other nice things about this set is it has multiple hook-ups in the back including component, which we like. Plus, the PIP. My wife and I have never had PIP before, but have found it very convinent. Plus, this TV was on sale and was actually cheaper then buying the TOshiba 27A42 (without PIP). ALso the remote is easy to use and one can figure it out in a matter of minutes.

The only thing that we wish was better was the sound. While the sound is not bad, it is nothing to brag about.

Overall, good TV set for the price and from what I hear one should expect to have it for awhile as the Toshiba brands are made with really good quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Consumer Report's Choice!!
This was a reviewed model from Consumer Reports. This is how it faired.

Decent performance at a reasonable price for dual-tuner PIP and flat screen. Remote control easy to use in low light. Has channel block-out and auto power-off. Can lock all video inputs. But lacks clock and alarm ("on") timer. Rear jacks are poorly labeled. Short (3-month) labor warranty. Similar model 27A42, $330, has no PIP; has "game timer" to limit game-playing. 22.25 x 29.25 x 19.75 in. (HWD)

The S-VIDEO INPUT PICTURE QUALITY was rated very good. The ANTENNA/CABLE INPUT PICTURE QUALITY was rated good. SOUND QUALITY good. Most of the TV's (11 TV's were given an almost identical score) on the list faired the same as this one. However Toshiba has one of the lowest repair scores available from a manufacturer. The overall score for the tv was GOOD, close to VERY GOOD but not quite there.

All in all you could get an absolutely fabulous TV regardless of the brand with great picture, great sound, and all the features you want, but when it breaks in two years I bet you wish you opted to buy a brand with a better repair history.

I like Toshiba. Toshiba's and Sony's have the best "Percentage of models high-rated over 6 yrs." as stipulated on the site as; About 75% -very good or excellent-

For warnings sake, RCA and GE have the worst repair history possible.

There were only two TV's considered better rated. The top pick was none other than "Toshiba 27AF42" and the second being "Sony KV-27FV300" both of which are flat screen models. Quite a large price difference. This review is strictly for 27-inch conventional sets. Meaning NOT HD-READY sets. I hope this information helps any future buyer.

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 27-inch 27A32 offers affordable quality. For starters, the FST Black picture tube presents an even flatter screen than Toshiba's popular Blackstripe tube, one that further reduces ambient light reflections and provides finer dot pitch and increased resolution. The increased viewing angle and improves linearity over standard tubes.

The 27A32's digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

StableSound tames audio levels between programs and commercials.

A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. You get two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video), as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 27A32 also features GameTimer (which monitors the duration of viewing), V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark remote control that controls most manufacturers' VCRs in addition to the 27A32. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific TV at a bargain price.
This 27" Toshiba is a terrific TV set at an unbelievably low price for this level of quality and performance. Toshiba consistently makes excellent TV sets across their whole model line -- on a par with Sony but less expensive. One reason the picture on this set is so good is that it has a digital comb filter. A digital comb filter is essential for really good picture quality and all top performing sets have them, but few sets in this price range have one. Yes, the picture tube on this set is "only" 27", while sets 50" or larger are now available. But do you really have a room large enough to do justice to a TV larger than 27"? Most people find that a good 27" TV is quite large enough for their TV viewing room. And, if you are one of the lucky few who have a very large room which could really benefit from a larger set, this set would serve nicely as a second set with an excellent picture at a bargain price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, good picture quality
First, I should mention that I have not seen any of the other TVs in this price range and size range. This TV replaced a 25-year old TV the same size (which still works), which I use next to my PC. (I also have a modern set in the living room and have used a variety of 19 inch TVs in hotel rooms.)

I'm quite pleased with the performance of this TV. The color rendition is excellent - I'm sure that this aspect of the performance is as good as you can get in this price range and comes close to more expensive sets.

The detail and clarity are good, but do represent the limitation of what you can get in a low-priced set. I'm sure the high end 13-inch sets that cost about twice as much would give better resolution, and a flat screen would provide that life-like, three-dimensional quality that I see in my living room TV.

If there is any flaw in the picture of this set, it is the *slight* "buzzy" quality to the image. If you visualize the difference between a scene lit by fluorescent lighting and one lit by incandescent lighting, then you understand what I mean. But again, it is slight and undoubtedly found in most or all sets in this price range.

The sound on this set is cleverly engineered. The amplifier has very little power, due to the cost limitations, and the speaker is small, due to the small size of the TV. So, Toshiba engineered the sound to have great clarity. Speech is very intelligible, and music is clearly heard, although far from impressive or loud. The result is entirely adequate for the usual living room/office/bedroom use - if you are going to use this to view movies in your (small) living room (or dorm room), get one of the sets costing about twice as much instead.

NOTE: In order to get a good picture with this set, you are going to need to turn down a lot of the settings (which is not unusual - factory settings are solely designed to make the set stand out in showroom lineups). I had to turn the sharpness down to zero, and even then, I think that I would like to have it yet lower than that (to help with the "buzzy" quality). I also had to turn down the contrast setting to "8", although I sit close to the set and so need this a little lower than if I were sitting across the room - but even then the setting would need to be significantly lower than the factory setting. ... 89. Toshiba 32HF72 32" Pure Flat HDTV-Ready TV

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's high-definition-ready 32HF72 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The 34-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks cool, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. A special 16:9 mode displays a 16:9 high-definition source (full 1080i) with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to maintain aspect ratio while wasting no screen lines on the bars. Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), IDSC II performs frame, line, and pixel doubling to create progressive, full-frame images. Toshiba's motion-adaptive Hyper Progressive Scanning system analyzes 13,600 screen points to smooth edges and eliminate stair-stepping artifacts. The result is a smooth, filmlike image. (IDSC II passes through 1080i images without alteration.)

Advanced velocity-scan modulation also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players and satellite receivers). The 10-watts-per-channel 32HF72 offers two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. SRS 3D Sound simulates surround sound from any stereo audio, while Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS) heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. ... Read more

  • Advanced velocity-scan modulation improves definition at picture edges

1-0 out of 5 stars Switch and bait
I can't believe such a reputable company would actually use the switch and bait system to try and boost sales. I ordered this TV at the Website price of $279, received my confirmation, then received a cancellation notice less than 24 hours later!! I truly think that by having read all the the previous reviews, Target will lose several customers. I also believe a company of this magnitude should honor any and all mistakes made on their behalf!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive...as good if not better than the Sony
Got the TV about 2-3 weeks ago, could not decide to spend the extra on HD vs. non HD. In the store the difference is obvious....Toshiba and Sony are head and shoulders better, and we cound not tell the difference between the 2. Heavy to lift, but great value. Now just need to get the HD reciever for the Direct TV.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contract Law
Under contract law, Target has no right to say the contract is null because their website generated the wrong price. For any lawyers reading this, or consumers with friends/families that deal with consumer related lawsuits, action should be taken. In addition, since there are multiple parties that have been affected by this issue it might fall under class action litigation. If there are any concerns/questions that I might be able to help answer, please write me at mykatenip@hotmail.com. I hope this helps somewhat- Hunter

1-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Disgrace!!!!!
Never have I been treated with such discourtesy and disrespect by a organization willing to take my money. Just as others have said, I ordered the Toshiba Flatscreen at the price shown online; was sent a detailed confirmation, was updated as to its delivery; and then without notification the order was cancelled by Target. The combination of false advertsing, the unwillingness to honor an agreement, lack of communication, and the dismissive minimization of a cutomer's issues, has shown me that Target Corp is a company that puts its mismanaged operations ahead of its valued customers. Without question the most negative and short-sighted abuse of a customer I have ever seen. I will go out of my way to share with friends, clients and associates, the self-serving character of this company. If no effort is made to accomodate us, as customers, the idea of a class-action suit would be well-received by me and surely worth pursuing. Contact me those of you who feel it may be. This has been a true, customer service nightmare, where the customer is screwed and then punished for the company's own unwillingness to accept its mistakes. I am livid and will remain so till this is addressed!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy vivid, high-contrast pictures from Toshiba's 27-inch FST PURE flat picture tube. Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features, the 27AF43 makes a great upgrade to a DVD or satellite-based home theater. The set's FST PURE flat tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed.

The 27AF43's three-line digital comb filter and vertical contour correction further enhance resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Another technology, black-level expansion, improves contrast (which results in a sharper, more three-dimensional picture).

The set provides stereo reception (with five watts per channel) and SAP (second audio program), which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 27AF43 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from its double-baffle speaker system, and BBE High-Definition Sound improves speech intelligibility and restores the dynamic range of compressed musical passages.

A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV!
Got this as a gift for my mother. I compared a few brands but for the money this one just can't be beat! The reviewer below who described "HUGE" pixels and a "distorted" picture needs to return his coke bottom glasses for a new pair. This is typical for most sets in this price range, it's not an HD display. Clearly he must have a problem with Toshiba or he just isn't informed.

Anyway, it's a great product. I got it for my mother for crying out loud! :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great!
After a lot of research on TV's I settled for this one. It is a huge improvement over my old RCA in many ways, but it seems to have a problem when showing sharp transitions between black and white. This is most noticable on text or animation. It looks as if the lines are blurred and I can't seem to find a fix for the problem. I went and looked at TV's at the local Best Buy and I noticed that most of the TV's including many HDTV's had the same problem. I'm starting to wonder if this is just a COX Dgital Cable thing.

On the positive side the Colors are extremely vibrant, Blacks are black and DVD's look stunning through the component input. I also find the reflections of the picture on the silver TV frame a bit annoying while watching in low light situations. Unfortunately black TV's seem to be a thing of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Television
I myself have been a fan of Sony, but when buying my next t.v I wanted to step up the research. I looked at a few web reviews like the ones here and could bot find a definitive answer- there was one place to go- Concumer Reports. Consumer reports rated this the best 27 inch television- this was what I needed to see- if I have learned one thing, it is to trust these guys! I was finnaly ready to buy, so I drove up to Best Buy to find an open box model of this tv- it was 75 $ off with no noticeble flaws. Once I got it home I knew I made the righ choice- it has a clean and vibrant picture with crisp sound, and yes you can here the base! Everything you would need in a tv for not too much money! If your in the market for a new tv, look no further!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV
I bought this Toshiba TV for a family member and I have to say that it's excellent. Beautiful colors, super sharp image, good remote, tons of connections. Actually, the only thing I could critique is that it should have had one or more s-video connections. I have a super vhs video and DVD player and if I ever got digital cable, this TV wouldn't suffice when it comes to the number of s-video inputs. But I didn't buy it for me so the many inputs/outputs were sufficient for the person I bought it for.

The sound is also good. Maybe not great but it does have BBE and Surrond Sound.

And the remote is really good too. I love the video input button (video 1, video 2, Colorstream, etc). You can watch a DVD and a video cassette and cable TV at the same time (if you want to do that). Also, because the DVD, VCR and TV are all Toshiba, the remote can control all three Toshiba products. Now that's cool.

So, overall, this Toshiba flat screen TV is great. Except for the number of s-video connection, there's almost nothing wrong with it. And the price here in Canada is perfect ($450, which is the same price in the US). Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best in its range...for me
I (like everyone) did a little study on flat 27" televisions and found this to be the most desirable for several reasons: 1) consumer reports 2) appearence 3) value. I bought this set from bestbuy and returned it because of a flaw (bouncing/blooming with the news ticker), and decided on the Samsung 27" flat...bad idea, that tv had terrible geometry, and while the picture was sharp, it was not vibrant. Sound was terrible, and I'm not talking for cinematic reasons, but it was very 'tinny' and hollow. Returned it the next day (they were all that way). A salesman told me Sony (fs100) comes back as much as any (and circuitcity.com has customer reveiws..complaints of cheap frames etc) The Panasonic reminded me of and ugly boombox. The Sharp is not sharp. So...I bit my lip and took the toshiba.
1-Toshiba
(PRO)-sharp compenent picture, analog/digital cable got very clear once cables and connections updated. Great appearance with smokey color that blends with any room. Great sound even without surround (checked both).
(CON)- without the cleanest cable connection, the picture clarity fails and tends to bloom (pays to update old cables in the house). This model seems to struggle a little with speaker shielding (noticable on white screens, but not a huge issue)...for the price those are the only problems I've found after 6 months. I still feel I made the right purchase

***One interesting way to get and HD look (rather prog scan look) is the 16:9 compression. By itself will 'squish' the picture...BUT, if you have a DVD player that'll expand the picture/signal, the TV will still display the same resolution on the screen (just morphed taller)...at this point you can use the 16:9 and compress the image back to a natural state. This produces the sharpest image without being an HDTV. BTW this only works with widescreen formats (1.85:1 and 2.35:1) and standard 4:3 movies. You can probably try this with any DVD player that will expand (I have a pioneer that will and a Koss that won't) and a tv with 16:9 compression (virtually all flats have)
** Also, rather that purchasing that extended warranty (you get a year manufact), check the manufacturer website to find an authorized dealer in your area that handles factory warranty repairs. If a tv lasts a year (I've had a few), it'll last well beyond the extended warranty. All this is good if you get a 27" (average 80-90 lb), but maybe not with a 150lb 32" or higher ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peel Me off the Couch
This is truly a wondrous set: the flat screen gives every image more depth and range, and the picture is tremendous. True, it doesn't have a built-in clock feature (which is fine as long as you have a VCR that does), and the set is massively heavy, but its well worth these minor inconveniences.

I checked into many, many different sets, researched for months, and kept coming back to the Toshiba brand. Regular programs look spiffy and DVDs postively resonate. For the money, this is about the best there is.

One thing to take note of, though: if you buy this set, be prepared to buy a special TV stand you can mount it on. This TV is heavy enough to flatten anything undersized, so be forewarned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great TV, questionable quality
...

I received two of these sets from Amazon. Both were defective.

The first set had a picture tube problem. About two inches from the top of the set, a thin bar ran the width of the set causing a discoloration.

After returning it to Amazon, the second set's problem was worse than the first. Anytime a bright colored scene comes up, the set buzzes internally toward the back of the tube.

I have since returned both sets. I don't know if I am simply unlucky, or it is a quality issue with this set. Philips makes the picture tube in the Toshiba flat TVs, and my newest TV is the Philips 32" Flat screen, and it, too, is defective. So, it might not be the Toshiba TV, but the Philips component within it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy with my decision
I spent a long time in stores just staring at the various 32" TVs. I decided that I wanted a flat screen, and it seemed the choice was between Sony and Toshiba. I went with Toshiba because I just liked it a little better, and there are alot of bad things said about the Vegas (good things too). I am delighted with my choice. DVDs look AMAZING! My PS2 looks fantastic on it as well. I highly recommend this set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Magnificient
I purchased this set after many hours of comparision with Sony, etc. Regular cable is great, and dvd and playstation 2 are fabolus on this set. Have my Toshiba colorstream dvd connected to this set, and let me tell you it is awesome. Two thumbs up!!

2-0 out of 5 stars So Far, Disappointing
After reading other purchaser's comments about the picture, I had somewhat high hopes, I suppose, but for "$...", I'd expect to get a picture without so much noise and distortion. The problem consists of a quite noticible line pattern. Perhaps this is a problem with all larger screen TV's, but this picture really compares poorly to my 6 year old JVC 27 inch set. I just received the set and may return it if I can't improve the picture quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful set!
Our twelve year-old Toshiba set still had a great picture, but I was itching to get a replacement that had component video inputs to get the greatest quality from our new DVD player. Consumer Reports showed that Sony and Toshiba were the two top-rated brands over many years of evaluations. My budget would have allowed a 32" Sony WEGA or a 36" Toshiba conventional set. I settled on the 36" Toshiba and have been very happy with the decision. Our couch is eight feet from the TV and at first I was worried that it would be too close for comfortable viewing, but it has not been a problem at all. As nice as the old set still was, the sharp, clear, excellent color of this set is remarkable! We have digital cable; I can only wonder how much better still it would look with a digital satellite feed! The image looks even bigger in our home than it did in the store; it is like having our own movie theatre. We listen to regular programming through the set's speakers, but have the DVD player's audio going to the stereo system. The video quality of DVDs on this set (using the component video inputs) rivals HDTV (to my eyes). Some reviewers of older 36" Toshiba sets on the Internet reported a moire' pattern problem, but they must have fixed that as I have never seen any indication of that problem at all. I have watched a number of original Star Trek episodes on the new set and it is amazing how much more detail is visible in scenes on the 36" set than on the 32". If you want a wonderful set with a large screen and excellent image, but still under a thousand dollars, then this is the one for you - the Toshiba 36A42.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Picture And Great Stereo Sound Quality!
When searching for a replacement for my long-serving 32' SOny, which is now consigned to bedtime duty in the master bedroom, where it doesn't get much use, I finally decided upon this terrific new Toshiba model beacuse of its features, its terrific picture, and the quality of its built-in stereo. Now, given that I also have a new Sony 53" projection system in my family room that I use almost exclusively for movies, I have to admit one of the criteria for this one was its picture and relative price, thus I decided against paying twice as much for the added quality in a flat screen, and against going for HDTV at his point, since the digital quality of my cable gives me great resultion with a relatively basic TV.

Yet it has been in daily service here since about Thanksgiving time, and I have really come to enjoy it a great deal. It is situated in my living room, and I can watch the news as I prepare dinner in the kitchen even though the screen is almost ten yards away! So size does count, after all! I watch it in the morning while getting ready for work, and it is on for news and for the few favorite programs I do actually watch on a regular basis, although I am been watching CSPAN and Book TV more and more exclusively lately. At any rate, this is a very good device with excellent color, resolution, adn very good stereo sound given its price and size. I really like it, and am satisfied enough with it to consider other Toshiba products as well. Enjoy! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy vivid, high-contrast pictures from Toshiba's 14-inch FST PURE flat picture tube. Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features despite its diminutive size, the 14AF43 makes a great accessory for a kitchen, bedroom, or even a DVD or satellite-based home theater. The set's massive FST PURE flat tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed.

The 14AF43's three-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). The set gives you stereo reception (with 2.5 watts per channel) and SAP (second audio program), which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 14AF43 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from its double-baffle speaker system.

A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. You get two sets of rear AV inputs (one of which has S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 14AF43 also features, V-Chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark universal remote control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture and works well in high field areas, too
We usually have trouble with video equipment at our location owing to the proximity of several broadcast towers interfering with the cable signal. This TV handles that problem better than any other TV or VCR we own.

Excellent picture, well-shielded tuner, good price. What else do you need?

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT dresser sized TV
I am in a small apartment now and until I find a house I didn't want to add to my A/V equipment...due to murphy's law my Sharp 13" I have for several years died (remote fetched $20 on ebay though :) ).

This TV would have to sit on the dresser....16.5" deep was the most room I had.

The Toshiba fits perfect...I wish I could have gotten the 20" or 24", but this works out good. There are a ton of video inputs and outputs, sound quality is good and the picture outstanding. This will make the perfect kitchen TV once I have the house situated.

The screen is flat as can be and the remote glows in the dark for a long time after the lights go out (not as nice as the actual lighted one from my Toshiba CX32G60 from 1997 which still works perfectly, but definitely does the job).

The price, combined with free shipping and $50 in amazon coupons I earned christmas shopping here made it a STEAL, it's $170-190 everywhere here. My price less than $100!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little 14" color tv!!
I wanted a small tv, this one is great! It has a nice sharp picture and the remote with it is nice! I use it to play Gamecube also - I am satisfied with the tv, no complaints so far and the price is reasonable for the 14" set

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
I needed a small, lightweight TV that could double as an emergency late-night Playstation screen as well as a 2nd video monitor for my computer. I do a lot of work with video and have 2 screens and a broadcast monitor, but I wanted a "regular, every-day TV" to preview footage on as well. This little TV does the job perfectly! Excellent picture, super easy setup, terrific price. There are few TVs in this price arena that have all the inputs this one does... And I can easily tote in anywhere in the house [garage, basement, kitchen] when necessary.

1-0 out of 5 stars This was a dud!
I received this television with high hopes, based on the other glowing reviews I read here. But this tv must have been a lemon, because after two hours of trying to set it up (explicitly following the directions in the user's manual), I got neither sound nor a picture. It is being returned today. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's flat-tube 27AF42 offers stylish looks, convenient features, and technological innovations. The 27-inch fine-pitch, flat-picture tube minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases the viewing angle while enhancing picture linearity to produce accurate, lifelike images. Three-line digital comb filter and a vertical contour correction further enhance resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Meanwhile, dynamic focus improves edge and corner focus so you can enjoy legible text and graphics even at the outside of the screen.

The nickel-alloy construction of the 27AF42's Invar shadow mask enhances color reproduction (nickel-alloy resists heat better than conventional iron masks), and a black-level expander improves contrast for a more theater like picture.

The set gives you stereo reception (with 5 watts per channel) and SAP (second audio program), which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The set simulates surround sound from a stereo source for a greater sense of sonic space, while the sub-bass system (SBS) enhances the low-end delivery.

A ColorStream component-video input affords optimum quality when connected with a compatible DVD player or cable/satellite system; standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You get two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 27AF42 also features color-temperature control, V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark universal remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV, a couple of very minor gripes
Outstanding picture. This TV will really show differences in the quality of your source. Blacks are VERY black. Some night scenes and dark shadow areas look almost spooky. Bringing up the brightness/contrast shows there isn't anything there but the effect is unsettling compared to a "regular" picture tube. Excellent comb filtering, and a very good job of eliminating edge and corner distortion found in less capable sets.

Gripes: 1) the little plastic front access door broke off while moving the TV, and the showfloor demo also had the door missing. 2) the remote is OK. I like being able to choose input sources here rather than using my receiver as a switch (two analog or s-video, one coax, one composite RGB) from the remote, but the thumb switch on the left side for TV/cable/VCR has a very short "throw" and gets moved inadvertantly.

Sound is better than average, but I use a home theater receiver so the built in speakers are not an issue. Picture quality from the composite RGB input from my DVD player is amazing.

This replaced an older Toshiba 27" TV which has a very fine picture but some service history problems. Toshiba gets one more chance here. The picture quality is limited only by your source. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 27AF42 27" Flast Screen
I bought this TV about 2 weeks ago, and I am extreemly impressed. The picture is great I am really impressed with it. The sound from the TV could use some improvment, but sounds fine on it's own. That shouldn't matter for people using a surround system. The menu and remote are very intuitive and easy to use. I have my computer hooked up to this TV VIA S-VIDEO and let me tell you the picture is so sharp this TV could almost pass as a regular computer monitor. Text is easy to read and computer interface is surprisingly sharp. I use the computer to TV hookup mostly to watch DIVX movies, and just a WARNING the owners manual does state that prolonged usage as a computer monitor my leave ghost images on the picture tube, so if you're planning on doing the same as I am make sure you don't over-do it! This TV has as many hookups and connections as a person could ever need, and they are very clearly labeled. I reccomend this TV to ANYONE who is looking for a 27" TV. The sony TVs might have a bit better picture (so I am told), but this TV was cheap compared to Sony's comperable products. ALL AROUND AWESOME TV!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed
Based on the reviews and the average 5 star rating I thought I would upgrade from my 15 year old 25 inch Zenith, hoping to get significant improvement in resolution quality. However, the resolution was not much better than my old TV, ...

Well like we need another five star review!
I am not much of a TV watcher but just use the TV for DVD movies and after reading all the other reviews, got it.
Wow. You can sit there just admiring the color and the detail of the picture. If I were looking for a TV, I would not continue my search.
This coming from a research-everything-before-you-buy kinda guy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right choice!
Thanks to all the reviewers all this board. I bought the Toshiba 27" last week and, wow, it's breath-taking! I picked 27" because that's the largest size my TV cabinet can accomodate, and I didn't want to buy new furniture for my small studio apt. The screen is totally flat and pictures are very clear and sharp, with rich colors. It definitely has one of the best pictures I've seen... and my Xbox games look especially good, I just can't believe how I lived with my old trusty Sharp 20" for so long! :) Until I make enough money to get a bigger apt and a Panasonic plasma TV, I think I'll be very happy with the Toshiba.

My dad has a Toshiba 36" he bought 10 years ago, and it still works beautifully. I pay a lot of attention to reliability when I spend money, and I think I made the right choice for a quality TV that impresses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes watching letterbox DVD's a pleasure
The Toshiba 36 inch is my first 36 inch tv.

I had a Sony 32 inch a few years back but it gave us nothing but problems. Previous to that, our tv was a 1985 Sony XBR. Which lasted over 11 years. But Sony has priced the XBR's beyond out affordability.

SO when the Sony 32 inch went out in under 4 years, we tried a 27 inch toshiba af42 and simply loved it. But with letterboxed dvd's the picture tended to be too small.
So we decided to move up to 36 inch and it is a dream.

This 36 upgrade has beautiful color and a wonderful full bodied sound.

If I have any disappointment it is that the picture during the day, could be a little brighter. At night though, it is excellent.

I hope it proves to be a reliable tv. ... Read more
