5-0 out of 5 stars philips
This television set has excellent color. No fuzzy pinks 4 months after you buy the set. My 8 year old niece threw a porcelin figurine at it and I thought it would have chipped, but it didn't. The sound doesn't go up and down automatically without you turning it up or down. Excellent choice. Next TV set will be a Philips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Product
I bought my Magnavox nearly 10 years ago. It was so long ago that I don't even remember the price. The picture and sound are just as crisp and sharp as day one. Still the best picture I've seen on any television out there, even those that cost 5x as much. The remote died probably a year or so ago, but with the proliferation of universal remotes it made no difference. I'm looking to upgrade to a 25 or 27 inch and I'm not even interested in looking at any other brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great TV at a great price
I bought this television to use in my study. While this model may not have all the bells and whistles others have, it has proven to be a great product and at such a great price it is a rare find. It is very easy to use and projects a very clear and crisp picture. I would reccomend this TV to anyone looking for a quality product at a fair price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV and Price
This is a excellent buy. I received the TV in 5 days. Everything was in mint condition. I am very pleased with this TV. It is wonderful in my room and compliments my taste. Phillips Magnavox does live up to its reputation. Looking for a good TV at a good price. My advice is buy this one and be as pleased as I am. Enjoy...

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish it was cable ready
I have this tv hooked up to my DVD player and my Panasonic shelf sound system at work. Not too bad of a set up. The color is rich and bright. I don't know how well it can get tv stations but that's fine by me since I only use it as a monitor anyway. Where I live tvs can't really work unless you have cable or a dish. Otherwise it's a nice investment for a micro theater system. If it was cable ready it would get five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV - read the page, all you people with questions
I used to own a similar TV, but of much poorer quality and workmanship. For all you people with questions, please check out the specifications link and also look at the "see it in motion" page. What a great feature! with spinning models and back and front detailed views! I love it! Anyhow, with these hook-ups, you can connect your TV to the VCR and cable, and then use your remote to get any channels you can get on your regular TV. This TV looks great, with many picture controls and everything else you really need. I'm definitely buying one the first chance I get. It's just what I've been looking for and will be perfect on my work desk next to the computer. And, Philips' quality is worth the extra dollars over comparable products.

4-0 out of 5 stars Convenient Viewing
Very clear sharp picture, easy tuning, good signal pulling power even when using the built in dipole antenna.

Tunes VHF and UHF channels, but is not cable ready - strictly for portable use. AC - DC, but does not operate on removable batteries. Handy DC power cord with built in fuse protection for use in your auto or boat.

Comes with an antenna adapter to use with an outside or external antenna.

Very easy to carry - ideal to take on a long car trip with the kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars 84 channel VTS Tuning
If you have cable, can you connect to the TV and receive more than the minimum number of tv channels? If your cable system has channels up to 84, can you receive them? In other words, is it cable ready? Can you set the channels on the sliding dial or are they preset? Would like to purchase, but unclear on TVs capability.

Asin: B0000AAAWJ

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy exciting home cinema viewing from any source with the Philips 36-inch 36PT842H. The set's Real Flat, high-definition picture tube delivers especially scintillating images from a progressive-scan DVD player or a DTV set-top box, accepting everything from standard 480i to progressive 480p and full, high-definition 1080i. The set's standard, 4:3 aspect ratio matches that of most TV broadcasts, and you get six letterboxing options for viewing widescreen programs in their original dimensions. What's more, the set's Real Flat picture tube not only looks cool compared to a conventional, bulbous screen, but also provides a high-quality, high-contrast picture.

Onboard two-tuner, double-window PIP gives you complete flexibility when keeping tabs on two programs simultaneously, right down to the handy freeze feature, which holds an image in the PIP frame and lets you keep watching your program in the main window. The PIP source picture can come from the main RF input, the audio/video AV1, AV2, or AV3 inputs, or the S-video input jacks located at the rear and side of the set.

Picture enhancements include a sophisticated 3D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Eye Fidelity gives you the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques--progressive or interlaced--so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping, viewing material in progressive scan (480p) or a line doubled (1050i) picture. Further, a feature called Active Control continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second.

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

The set offers stereo reception with 10 watts power per stereo speaker, and onboard Incredible Surround processing simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

Two sets of high-definition component-video inputs (1080i/480p) accommodate a set-top box/HD satellite receiver and a progressive-scan DVD player, while side and rear composite- and S-video inputs accommodate other hardware. Rear-panel audio/video outputs make it a cinch to hook the set up with your home theater surround receiver for a truly enveloping A/V experience. A .125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private, and the set comes with a universal remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS TV!!!!!!
When we recieved our first one, it never worked straight out of the box. We exchanged it and the second tv worked for about 2 months and suddenly the audio went out....

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed
The audio broke after 7 months of very kind occasional use. The only thing less reliable than this equipment was the Philips consumer relations department. I'll never purchase another Philips product again nor allow my workplace to purchase one unless they improve their warranty or reliability.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken in FOUR DAYS
We had this item a total of 4 days. It ate 2 videos. Then wouldn't take any more videos. I am returning it. This is the second TV / VCR combination made by Phillips Magnavox that has broken in record time (with normal use). Very disappointed in their products and won't buy another item from this company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features!
This TV/VCR has some really great features. The best is the Clock that automatically sets itself! The remote control is easy to use and makes it super simple to record my favorite programs. Great TV for kitchen or bedroom! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for the money
... it has a RF in, which is just a Barrel Jack for your cable input. NO audio or Video inputs such as Component, SVHS or Composit ... . now on to the features, one thing i can state is that this tv has TONS of features, smart sound, smart picture, bass adjust, tone adjust. one flaw is that the smart picture doesnt really do much justice for this tv since you only have the RF INPUT picture quality is kind of poor just imagine an OVER sharpened picture and thats pretty much what you get. Just wish they would have added composite (RCA JACKS) Inputs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best on the Market
After owning 2 RCA's in 4 years, in which the picture tube went out just past the warranty, I switched to Philips Magnavox. I have enjoyed it for 5 years now. The picture is the best I've ever seen in color TV, and the smart sound is a feature I really enjoy. I am sold on Philips Magnavox, and my next TV, whenever I buy a new one, will be a Philips Magnavox.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sound confusion
Be aware that even though this TV has a pair of speakers it is NOT a stereo TV. The comparable stereo model is model number 25TS56C 25". I ordered this TV tonite thinking it was stereo, but then found out different by comparing prices and models from another site. So since I haven't received the TV yet I give it a 3 star rating. I just wanted others to not make the same mistake I did! I will hook this TV up thru a stereo VCR and an audio receiver so I can still experience stereo sound if I want. Still this a good deal with the free shipping and no taxes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearest picture I've ever seen
For 5 weeks, I visited a friend who owned this model Phillips. I marvelled regularly over the clarity of both the sound as well as the picture. I am replacing my current model (with which I had previously been content) with this TV! Nearly everything looks like a DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Value!
I'm very happy with my purchase of the Philips Magnavox Television! I live in a smaller apartment and wanted to set up a home theater system with limited space. This TV works great size wise, and the picture quality is great! It has all the necessary audio/video plugs which was the main problem with my older TV. If you're looking for an affordable middle-of-the-road television, go with the 25" Philips! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Small enough for desktop PC use and versatile enough to stand in for home theater duty, Philips' standard (4:3) aspect-ratio 15PF7835 active-matrix TFT LCD TV is stylish enough and small enough to be used in any room of the house. The 15-inch progressive-scan 480p/ED TV offers high brightness (400 cd/m2) and high contrast (450:1), as well as an integrated NTSC TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs. Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you'll enjoy vivid, detailed images from 480p and computer sources on the set's native 1,024 x 768 screen.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (no risk of image burn-in), space savings, light weight/easy positioning, and energy efficiency (most LCDs use substantially less power than their CRT equivalents.

They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio). In this set, an onboard DCDi chip from Faroudja enhances resolution by eliminating the stair-step jagged edges often seen on progressive-scan displays.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DCDi chip also offers 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Smart Picture control lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, with modes for soft, natural, rich, multimedia, and personal. An audio volume leveler (AVL) keeps the TV sound at an even level for a more consistent, comfortable sound.

Inputs include 2 composite-video connections, 1 each component- and S-video, an RF antenna/cable-box/VCR input, and a 15-pin D-Sub analog RGB input for your PC, with a .125-inch stereo headphone jack for private listening (headphones not included).

1-0 out of 5 stars wasting your money
I purchased this tv in Feb. 2001, and it worked fine until October 2001. When I went to turn it on, it came on but there was no picture or sound, and it would automatically cut itself off after about 3 seconds.I contacted Philips Magnavox, and all they could tell me was that they could send a repairman out which would cost me 69.95 for a service call plus labor which would be around 250.00-300.00. I paid around 600.00 for this tv. Wal-Mart even refused to stand behind this product. I felt that it was a waste of time to have it repaired, when I could take the money spent for repairs and buy one that has a money back guarantee. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small 9-inch AC/CD color TV.
This is a very good TV especially for its small size. It has a good quality picture, with good convergence. The overall size for this with a 9-inch tube is the smallest in this class.
It works well on the supplied antenna. FM radio is a bonus as is the full-featured remote control. An AC/DC, TV with all these things is hard to get in such a small package.
Price is reasonable for this size AC/DC set and Philips is there to stand behind it.
This unit is new to me and I only have owner it for a short time. If it last as long as my
Toshiba 5-inch AC/DC monitor, ( 20 years) I'll be happy.

1-0 out of 5 stars What is in stock ?
I have been looking for a 9" under the counter television. Every item I look at is not in stock. Are you in business or not ? The Philips PR0930X I'm looking for has been backordered for some time. As a matter of fact - I don't see anyhting on your site that is available. Heck of a way to run a business. If you don't have merchandise available you can't serve your customers - what customers you may have left. Provide a service or get out of business - the getting out of business part will take care of itself with this kind of product availability.

1-0 out of 5 stars Design defect
This is a nice TV overall but it has a "design flaw" that you should know about before purchasing it.

I record both video and audio only (radio broadcasts) on my VCR. It works fine when there is video but when trying to play "audio only" video tapes or listen to audio only through my VCR the audio section of the TV shuts down completely (silence). This is not a problem with any other TV I own.

In other words, for this TV to work properly it needs a video signal. If not it will not work, it will not play accept audio without video being present.

Finally, when I called Philips Magnavox tech support it was like I was talking to a turnip. No matter how many times I tried to explain my problem to the tech he kept telling me that the problem was in my VCR, the connection, etc., even after telling him numerous times that it played video just fine. He just didn't get it. I asked for his supervisor and he wasn't much better. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The 34-inch 34PW850H HD-ready TV provides true high-definition 1080i picture (16:9 aspect ratio) with 6 widescreen and 4:3 full-screen display. It also features a 3D Y/C digital comb filter, scan velocity modulation, invar shadow mask, and side A/V and S-Video jacks for a clean look.

The 34PW850H's flatter tube provides a wider viewing angle while minimizing reflections for the best picture possible. The special alloy invar shadow mask helps maintain tighter focus and eliminate "color blooming" as compared to standard tubes.

The 3D Y/C digital comb filter separates chrominance (color) from luminance (brightness) information for independent processing to improve picture resolution and minimize distortion, while scan velocity modulation varies the electron beam speed for a more finely rendered picture with improved sharpness. The AutoPicture function instantly optimizes brightness, contrast, color, tint and sharpness settings with picture presets for Movies, Sports, Video games, and weak signal reception. Philips' Eye Fidelity line doubling feature gives you the choice between progressive scan (480p) or a line-doubled (1080i) picture when viewing non-HD broadcasts.

This set has a built-in 181-channel tuner and two built-in speakers (10 watts apiece) that provide virtual surround sound. It's compatible with 1080i and 480p high-definition signals with an optional HDTV tuner. With the AutoSound feature, audio volume levels are automatically adjusted and optimized with the choice of three presets: Movies, Voice, Music plus an adjustable personal setting.

The included universal remote controls all TV features plus virtually all brands of VCR, DVD, cable TV converters and digital broadcast satellite receivers. The 34PW850H has 3 composite A/V inputs (1 side), 1 A/V output, 2 S-Video inputs (1 side), 2 component inputs, and a headphone jack on the side.

Tech Talk
Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines of video that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today's analog TV), indicated by an "i" in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7...) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8...) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, "p," fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, like a computer display.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality for a great price
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this TV set. I ordered it from amazon for $1300 with free shipping which was cheaper than anything that I could find on the net. I was thrilled by the features that this tv had. The most important was the 2 Component Video connections. This allowed me to hook up both the digital cable and a progressive scan DVD player. The picture was awesome, and it was nice that ALL my dvd could be watched in wide screen without those annoying bars. Basically, I'm really glad that I purchased this tv set.

PS- getting a home theater with this tv is also a nice touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I bought this TV from Amazon for $1,2500, a superb price. It took a few weeks to ship, but the shipping company were excellent---they deliver and install (for free at the moment). I almost cancelled my order because of another customer's problems with shipping, but I decided to wait it out, and everything worked out. If your order hasn't shipped and you are getting frustrated, try emailing customer service---they are helpful.

The TV gives an outstanding picture when connected to a DVD player. I don't have HDTV cable, so our cable picture isn't as good (it took some playing with the options to get it sharp). Still, it looks great and I can't see why it wouldn't be outstanding if I invested in HDTV cable. The sound is excellent.

The remote is fine for controlling the TV but sucks otherwise; it is not universal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this from Amazon
3 weeks after we received our TV, it exploded (we heard a "pop", the screen went blank, and an acrid smell filled the room). And guess what? Amazon DOES NOT HANDLE RETURNS on televisions larger than 27 inches. Huh? Yup, you heard right. If you buy a TV larger than 27 inches from Amazon, they COMPLETELY WASH THEIR HANDS OF IT once it reaches your door. That's it. Done. Thanks for buying. Even if it EXPLODES IN YOUR LIVING ROOM, well, tough. The nice folks at Amazon will simply tell you to call Philips or "check your manual for troubleshooting tips" and, oh, thanks for calling. Where does it say this? It doesn't. You have to find and click the tiny little link that says, "Shipping rates and policies". Never mind that I've bought hundreds of items from Amazon over the past 7 years and that I've never had a problem returning any of them. They expect you to guess that their return policy might be completely different when it comes to televisions and to seek out the information on your own. No where during the entire sales cycle do they ever so much as hint that you can't return it and that they'll have nothing to do with it once it leaves their warehouse. Oh, and what did they do after I sent them a strongly worded letter calling them out on a very bad business practice? They sent me a form email saying that they're sorry I'm unhappy with my new TV but that they can't accept returns and that I check my user manual if I'm having problems. Are you kidding me??? To add insult to injury, the form email stated that I could respond to the email for further discussion on the matter. I did and 5 days later got a "return to sender" email telling me that my email had permanent fatal errors and could not be delivered. Wow. This might actually be the worst customer service experience I've ever had, with any company. Oh, and in case you're curious, Philips finally delivered us a new TV...4 MONTHS after we dropped it off at a "factory authorized" repair shop. Wow, Amazon and Philips - what a team!

4-0 out of 5 stars good HDTV-GREAT price!!!!!!
Picked up this demo model at SEARS,origionally listed at $1500- I paid $720 plus tax. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the newer models(PIP for example)but the quality and price made it difficult to turn down. A little time and research were well worth the $780 I saved compared to the retail price. Good luck, happy hunting, and remember- ONLY SUCKERS PAY RETAIL......

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome picture!
I purchased Philips 34PW850H 34" Digital Widescreen HD-Ready TV three weeks ago, and I have to tell you I am very impressed with the picture when watching a movie using a Denon 2200 progressive scan DVD player. To be honest I purchased the TV primarily to watch movies, and I have not been disappointed in the least. The picture is sharp, and without a doubt clear, very clear. I have only to watch the same movie on a friends regular TV to be reminded of its perfection.

AS for regular or digital cable, I cannot say I care for the stretched look on the screen, which is a by product of "all" widescreen TVs at this time (except when watching a true High Definition signal), but as I have chosen not to go with the High Definition signal for now, the strethed version on cable will have to be gotten used to, fortunately for me, I watch very little cable TV, and as the future is widescreen friendly, I know this will improve. I cannot therefore comment on the Philips viewing pleasure in High Definition, but seeing the DVD quality (clarity) in the picture, I have no problem admitting to myself it must be incredible. I would expect the picture to be better than movies on DVD, as DVD movies are in the 480 or so resolution range, and HD can be as high as 1000 or over resolution range.

I had considered the Sony and Toshiba 34" widescreen, but... Philips won out. The Philips was $1400 (CAN) less than the Sony, which I could not justify for a Sony. AS I see it, the only "real" sacrifice is not having a DVI plug on this TV, but having found new DVD movie releases near my home for only 99 cents, this drawback will quickly be forgotten. If you are like me, be prepared to accept some movies will still have a bar on the top and the bottom of the screen, but I can see myself forgiving even that (soon enough) as I get to enjoy more, and more this great picture, and viewing perfection. Good Luck in your shopping adventure. Glad mine has turned out to be such a success. ... Read more
