Samsung's DLP-based HLN4365W projection television will thrill you with its amazingly slender 15-inch profile and broad, 43-inch display, whose widescreen format is specially configured to accommodate the native aspect ratios of favorite movies. Its small size and relatively light weight (under 70 pounds) free you to try it out in different parts of a home before settling on the spot that's right for you.

What is DLP?
The DLP processor DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a technologythat bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousandsof hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a"micro mirror device" (below, pictured with the head of a pin).
DLP mirrors dwarfed by the head of a pin
Each of the mirrors can be pointed toward or away from the light sourcethousands of times per second, providing not only minute color detail butalso sharper resolution than even LCD displays.
Detail of resolution comparison between LCD and DLP
This isn't a garden-variety projection set. DLP, or Digital Light Processing technology (developed by Texas Instruments) allows purely digital connections between video sources and the projection system in front of you. The HLN4365W uses a second-generation (HD-2) DMD Chip, which--combined with Samsung's light-processing optics--results in clear, bright, high-contrast images. Further, the DLP panel is insusceptible to the damaging effects of heat, humidity, vibration, or aging, so burn-in will never be an issue--all the more reason to make this TV double as a computer monitor. Hang it, mount it, or place it on a stand.

And, when you're ready to take on the world of high-definition television, just add a HD satellite/off-air receiver or an HDTV tuner to enjoy full-quality digital HDTV broadcast programming--the set features a DVI-HDTV interface so you can establish a direct, premium-quality digital connection with your DTV receiver.

Samsung's DNIe Video Enhancer (or Digital Natural Image engine) enhances all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, and picture detail, incorporating digital noise reduction to improve low-quality video sources. The set's Automatic Digital Format Conversion System is compatible with 1080i and 720p HDTV, 480P EDTV, and 480i SDTV formats. The system accepts any DTV, analog TV, or XGA computer RGB input. All video signals are converted to a progressive-scanned 16:9 widescreen pixel count (1,280 x 720 resolution).

Film Mode 3:2 pulldown detection renders DVD movies in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Samsung's HD Ultra-Fine Pitch screen further improves picture clarity, especially when viewing higher-definition video sources like DVD and HDTV. The .155 mm screen brings out subtle image details otherwise unnoticeable on standard .72 mm pitch screens.

A total of 13 video inputs handles more than just about any set we've seen and includes the DVI input mentioned above, a PC input (D-Sub 15 pin, XGA), three each composite-video and S-video inputs, two high-definition component-video inputs, a DVD-specific input that handles 480i/p outputs, and two standard RF inputs (for VCRs and cable boxes).

You can assign picture-format sizes to each video input; the remote's "aspect" button toggles through the set's five options: zoom 1, zoom 2, wide, panorama, and normal (the TV retains the last format setting for each input); and all onscreen information and menus appear in translucent overlays, letting you view video programs in the background while consulting the setup menus.

The 15-watt-per-channel stereo audio system benefits from BBE Sound with a five-band equalizer, which enhances the sound from both movies and music programs. The Sound Mode Preset feature provides dynamic sound settings for whatever you're watching--choose from standard, music, movie, speech, or custom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hay dudes go for this one and stop wasting your time
I just purchased this product and had some concern because of a couple of the ratings given. After a couple of days rerunning wires from my DVD, VCR, Audio System and of course the most important thing of all my HD cable box, I was in a New World of TV enjoyment. The key is that everything from TV is not HD compatible yet, but there are channels out there to get you through the night. This product provides you with great bravado. I'm not going to go through a lot of tech stuff to justify what I see, but if you want what you see and hear about in adds about really feeling like you are looking through a window, this is the way to go. Hay dudes go for this one and stop wasting your time looking.

PS
Yes I did research which included a number of testimonials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome TV!
OK, OK, it's spendy.. but this is clearly not a must-have item for any household, it's a luxury! As far as luxuries go, this is one of the best and most affordable considering what you get.

I love the fact that this TV only weighs 60ish pounds. I've had to move it a number of times as I've been hooking up peripheral devices, and the light weight of the TV is appreciated!

Also love the fact that, unlike other widescreen projection TV's, the DLP technology assures there will never be tube or burn-in issues. Since much of the TV we all watch is not broadcast in widescreen, viewing in 4:3 is required if you don't want to add 20 pounds to every actor/actress (well, that might not be all that bad these days..) or stretch scenery to where it looks unnatural.

DVD's look AMAZING, especially if you have a DVD player with a DVI output. Samsung makes and Amazon sells one and I can't recommend it enough.

Long story short - this is an expensive TV but the light weight and the outstanding picture quality (esp from a distance of ~10 feet) make it worth the purchase. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars highly dependent on source quality
To get the best from this TV you MUST feed it a good quality signal. The best way to connect this set to any source is via the DVI connector. An HD signal from DirecTV or a DVD played on a HTPC (Home Theater PC) looks absolutely stunning. On some of the standard definition channels that have a lot of compression, you will see flaws in the picture because the TV is quite revealing (almost ruthlessly so). Also, the picture is spectacularly bright, so viewing in a well lit room is no problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars HD Cable on DLP
I previously reviewed my HLN4365W set with the Samsumg DVD player using DVI output, and normal TV. I now have HD digital cable and want update the review. HDTV comes in two aspect ratios, normal and widescreen. Some of your favorite network shows will be in HD but normal aspect ratio - hence the black bars on each side. Increasingly, top network offerings are delivered in HD widescreen filling the entire HDTV screen. The quality of these pictures is superb, surpassing that seen with the best DVD source. I find myself selecting programs based as much on picture quality as content. In short, this TV will not dissapoint whether the source is DVD or HDTV.

4-0 out of 5 stars picture tilt
Letters move downward from the bottom right to the bottom left and I understand this is picture tilt. Samsung technicians tell me that this shold not happen with this television set (HLN4365W). I am in the process of trying to get the picture adjusted, but to no satisfaction to date. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It Seemed Great
Main reason for purchase was a can't beat price. It was pefect size and weight. Purchased new for 79.99 June 2003. December 24, 2003, I pressed the power button, and got nothing. Took in to Magnavox authorized repair agent, and they wanted $20 off the top just to tell me what was wrong. Felt I was being taken, so will bite the bullet and purchase another brand. ... Refurbished to near-new condition, the Philips 30PW850H offers a 30-inch Real Flat, high-definition widescreen picture tube, which delivers exciting home-cinema viewing when used with a progressive-scan DVD player or an outboard digital set-top box for DTV reception. Picture enhancements include a sophisticated 3D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Eye Fidelity gives you the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques--progressive or interlaced--so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping, viewing material in progressive scan (480p) or a line doubled (1050i) picture..

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture. Further, a feature called Active Control continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second.

The set offers stereo reception with 10 watts power per stereo speaker, and onboard Incredible Surround processing simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

Two sets of high-definition component-video inputs (1080i/480p) accommodate a set-top box/HD satellite receiver and a progressive-scan DVD player, while side and rear composite- and S-video inputs accommodate other hardware. Rear-panel audio/video outputs make it a cinch to hook the set up with your home theater surround receiver for a truly enveloping AV experience. A 0.125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private. The set includes an NTSC tuner for standard TV reception and comes with a universal remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this tv/dvd!!
I bought this tv/dvd in August 2003 and never really could get the dvd player to work. I called Magnavox on December and the 90 day warranty was out so they would only pay for the part not labor to fix it. They sent 2 replacement parts which were both defective (and took 2 1/2 months to do), then placed all of those parts on hold while they looked into it for 2 months. Then the sent another part and said they check it and it worked. It was also defective! Magnavox has not been helpful at all!!! After 3 parts and 5 1/2 months of it being in the shop, they are going to take over 2 weeks to DECIDE if I can get a replacement tv...which I don't want...and they won't refund my money! I am now dealing with the store I bought it from to try to get my money back. If that doesn't work, my attorney said to take them to small claims court! What an ordeal for a $190 tv!!!! Never again will I own a Magnavox or Philips product!

1-0 out of 5 stars Careful with this one....
I have been extremely dissapointed with this Unit. I bought it for Christmas to use in our trailer, unboxed it and played the first DVD - everything worked fine so I put it back in the box. Middle of March took it out of the box in preparation for our first trip out in the trailer and it wouldn't play a DVD. I tried the disc cleaners, etc, nothing worked. I called Magnavox and they told me it only has a 90 day warranty on labor. I got 2 estimates to have the DVD fixed - over $100.00 for a TV/DVD that was used 1 time. It now is a 13" TV - won't play DVD's, CD's at all. I would not purchase this unit again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piss-poor DVD playback - unable to play discs after 4 weeks
This TV-DVD combo does not play DVD discs at all. We received it as a Christmas present and have been extremely disappointed with its performance as it only seems to be getting worse. Unfortunately this may be a problem with Magnavox, as a friend's earlier Magnavox DVD system had similar problems - "sticking" and "freezing" during playback. We have had a second DVD player for over a year, made by a different manufacturer (we won't mention any names, but it starts with an "T" and ends with "oshiba") and have had absolutely no problems with it - so it's not our discs.

We even visited the site and tried out Magnavox's "product troubleshooting list" for the item - (e.g. is the disc a DVD-R, is it a Disney movie, did we place it in the tray correctly). None of it helped, nor did a "disc cleaner" or cleaning discs with a soft cloth.

The system first began to act erratically approximately three weeks after we received it, when we found that it sometimes did not play discs all the way through, without "sticking" about 45-60 minutes into play. Then, it began to provide "Disc Errors" when playing some, but not all discs. Usually the problem subsided if we turned off the machine, reinserted the disc (making sure it was clean of any dust), and then attempted to play again.

Currently however, it will not play ANY discs, only four months after we received this as a gift. We have tried consecutively, five different CDs of different types - none of them MP3 CDs, none of them DVD-Rs or special Disney movies. All of them simply zip around and around in the DVD, with the final result being a "Disc Error", suggesting that the disc may not work in playback. Of course, all of these discs work fine in our other DVD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Very Satisified With This Product
I have been very satisified with this product. Mine was a refurbished unit. The picture is clear and the VCR and DVD work great. The remote is not perfect, but you can get used to it after awhile. My original remote arrived broken. I contacted Magnavox and they shipped another one overnight delivery. They didn't even make me return the broken remote. Customer service was excellent. If you're looking for a good, well priced TV/VCR/DVD combo, I would recomend this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
This combo unit offers plenty of features for the price. I found it discounted for under $200. So far all is working well. It's a great space saver in a place like the bedroom and there is no clutter of cables and power cords because the unit is integrated. Sound and picture quality are good.

One nice feature is the DVD player's ability to read JPEG files allowing you to use the unit for slide shows of your favorite digital pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Bedroom, space saving, but remote [is bad]!
The other reviewer's complaint is all about his defective remote, and says nothing about the television/dvd/vcr. Our remote works fine, although I think they could have placed the channel and volume buttons in a better spot. Also, the buttons are almost all the same size and in near perfect rows and columns, which makes you need to look closely to see what you're pressing. Some remotes make the volume/channel changers in a diamond shape and larger than the other buttons and this is what they should have done here. A poor remote makes surfing, or watching two shows at once, a pain in the rear. This TV doesn't have a 'last channel' button, so you can flip back and forth between two channels.

The tv picture is fine, clear, no waviness. So far the DVD and VCR work well and the sound is good. I haven't purchased any other combo's before, so I can't compare. Still, I'm a person that tends to return things at the drop of a hat if I'm not wholly satisfied, and I'm returning this due to the pain in the rear remote and lack of 'last channel' feature, which I tend to use often.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T MAKE MY MISTAKE!!!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS TV. It came with a defective remote and the remote is required to set up the TV unless (as they say, but who knows?!?) you purchase extra cables. Customer Service (NOT!!) is not authorized to overnight a replacement remote so it will take at least seven business days to receive a new one. And what happens if that one is defective? Theresa in Customer Service even implied that since they didn't ship the item, Magnavox isn't really responsible for "what could have happened" to the remote. What a shame. Magnavox used to be such a fine company. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An Adequate to Mediocre Kitchen TV Fairly Priced
I bought a refurbished unit, but it looked new to me. Five minutes after hooking up to the cable, we had an extremely bright, sharp picture -- so bright and sharp that it almost hurt the eyes. It has a control to automatically search for all the tunable (cable) channels. Forty-five minutes later, while I was making supper, there was a small explosive sound and the picture was all fuzzy and washed out.

I was hopping mad and ready to send it back, but I let it run all night to see what would happen. It looked the same the next morning, so I used the controls to dial a perfectly adequate picture.

I think what happened was that it was factory-set for an extremely high color temperature, say 9000°+, but the tube couldn't hold that. BTW it has a normal range of picture tuning controls that you access through the remote. Also, I don't like the high-color temperature setting so many TVs come with now -- nor do I like the excessive red bias that many models have as their default color.

Now it looks like a fairly normal picture -- not nearly as bright and sharp as it was initially, but perfectly adequate for a kitchen TV. It's been used every day for the past five weeks and it's OK -- not great, but not bad -- a perfectly average, or maybe even mediocre but functional, screen. Its not as sharp as the 14 year old GE five inch set it replaces (small text is extremely fuzzy), but the color fidelity and contrast are better.

The sound is average too -- monophonic coming out of the right side of the set. The FM radio works just fine but it's a nuisance to dial stations if you like to hop around. The frequency of the station to which you are listening is shown on the screen constantly, but it hops up and down every few seconds or so to avoid burning the screen -- I don't know if that's necessary nowadays, and its slightly annoying to look at -- but why would anyone stare at an otherwise blank screen?

The [$$$] I paid for the set is just about right -- it's that kind of set, not great, not bad. I'm thinking about getting another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV
I've had this TV now for 4 months and I have to say it's GREAT. Great picture, sound, size. I agree with one other reviewer that the FM tuner not having a pre-set for stations isn't great, but I rarely use that feature anyway, and it's just nice to have the FM tuner there in the first place. Great size. I really wanted to have it with portable capability for use in car or with batteries, but the value is outstanding and I would highly recommend it to anyone. This is the 3rd Phillips Magnavox we've owned in the past 15-20 years, and we've been pleased with them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations
Bought this tv for only $88 to use in the kitchen. I am impressed with the picture and the "undercabnet" attachment. I may buy another to give to my son and daughter in law as a gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV for the price
I had been searching for a 9" TV for several months. It seems odd that one can purchase a perfectly good 13" television for under $..., but I couldn't find a decent 9" unit for under $.... At our home we have made a family habit of watching Wheel and Jeopardy every evening during dinner. Our old 5" black and white was dying and I wanted another set that would squeeze in to our small dining room.

I had been frustrated at the local retailers who only seemed to offer an RCA TV that I had misgivings about. I also didn't feel like spending big dollars for a TV that gets 5 hours of use per week. I had seen the Phillips 9" TV at the local Best Buy, but the only unit they had left was an open box unit that was missing it's power cord and was priced at $.... I took a chance on ordering a reconditioned unit thorough Amazon. I figured if it didn't work out, I could always return it. When it arrived, it looked new. There were no physical flaws. Setup took less than ten minutes. The picture tube is nice and bright, with excellent resolution. The only drawback with the set is that the it's signal sensitivity is only fair. If you are connecting to cable or an outdoor antenna this will present no problem to you. My home has aluminum siding, making indoor reception a little challenging. I found that the included monopole antenna was adequate but not as good as I would have liked. I am a TV broadcast engineer by profession, so I tend to be a little more critical than most. In any case, I was able to improve reception dramatically by substituting a pair of rabbit ear antennas (you know , the old type with two rods that stick up) that I had lying around. You can buy a cheap pair of rabbit ears at any Radio Shack. Now I get very good reception and an excellent picture. Even my cynical 16 year old son was impressed. With shipping, the whole TV cost around $.... I think this an excellent value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Competitive set with compact dimensions
The Magnavox MS3650C has one compelling quality, it is very compact for a 36" set at 33" wide, 29" high, and 24" deep. This is the only reason I purchased this particular TV (as I have a built in entertainment center that is 33 1/2" wide and this is the only 36" set that would fit), but I have been pleased with the picture, features, and price. In the first month I have had no problems, however, I purchased a 4 year service contract as the manufacturers warranty is only 3 mo. parts and labor, one year parts. It seems to me that a regular TV set is a very mature product, with little difference in picture quality between brands. It's pretty much a question of features and price. This one, literally, fit my needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad
I bought this tv only 3 weeks ago and already there is several problems with it. right out of the box the power button on the tv did not work, the picture started flickering pink and blue within two weeks of the first use, and it would randomly shut off when ever it felt ike it. I WOULD NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT RECOMENDING THIS BRAND TO ANYONE!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Philips Magnavox MS3650C 36" Color Television
I bought this TV's predecessor over 3 years ago for 850.00, a price I thought was a great value at the time. It was, but to get this at the present price is an even nicer coup! I have had this as the centerpiece to my home theatre setup, which consists of all top end JVC digital/dts equipment, and top line Cambridge Soundworks speakers, both considered leaders in the field/price/value range. Colours are beautiful, controls are intuitive and easy to use. The remote is easy to set up other components on, and the speakers give a nice rich sound when listening without the sound system on (though that rarely happens!). Sports and movies are clean (separate settings for these different types of viewing events), and setup was a breeze. I highly recommend this TV, especially at the price and shipping deal. Can't get much more value for the money! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The 34PW8520's 34-inch RealFlat, high-definition picture widescreen tube affords today's best home cinema viewing when used with a progressive-scan DVD player or an outboard digital set-top box for DTV reception. Picture enhancements like line doubling with Digital Natural Motion (480p/1080i) bring interlaced sources like VCRs and non-progressive-scanning DVD players into the digital realm, and a sophisticated comb filter further improves the quality of incoming interlaced video signals. Eye Fidelity provides the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques, progressive or interlaced, so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping. The set even offers four-channel sound with a built-in subwoofer for a rich, theatrical presentation. Virtual Dolby Surround simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

In addition, dual-tuner, double-window picture-in-picture lets you monitor one video source--such as a TV channel, the Internet, a videotape, or a video game--while watching another. A feature called Active Control continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second. Four rear-panel audio-video connections and one set of side AV inputs accommodate composite-video, S-video, and component-video, with one set of high-definition component-video inputs. A 0.125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private. The set includes an NTSC tuner for standard TV reception and comes with a backlit universal remote control and a 12-month warranty on parts and labor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent picture quality without a progressive scan DVD
this is a response to the previous review about poor perfomance.

1. you got the wrong TV for 90% of your DVD in letterbox ratio. this TV is meant for widescreen, 16.9 or anamorphic movies. for letter box ratios, get a normal tv.

2. with normal non progressive input, you can get progressive quality by having the tv do progressive mode on its own. this means you need not have a progressive DVD player to enjoy progressive quality video. this is really your best option for your letter box ratio dvds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Progressive Scan Is a Lie
The progressive scan input has no aspect ratio control and so MOST DVDs are incorrectly STRETCHED across the frame. Letterboxed DVDs will still have black bars and the image will be unacceptably distorted. Only ANAMORPHIC or "enhanced for 16:9" DVDs will display properly!

The Widescreen Modes (Auto Wide, Zoom 14:9, Zoom 16:9, WideScreen, Picture Tilt, Subtitle Zoom, Conventional 4:3) listed in the specs are NOT available when watching via progressive scan. So the user has NO widescreen options to fix this problem.

Consequently, I have NOT been able to watch 90% of my DVDs in progressive scan mode. This is supremely frustrating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Product clean lines and clean picture.
I bought this to compete with a projection TV in the lounge, for the bedtime leasure. And the picture clarity of this tube TV is just stunning, 27 inchs of joy.

Clean lines and clean picture.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this TV
I bought the TV about an year back. I am deeply dissatisfied with its performance.
For the last few months, the TV would just hang - neither the remote nor the TV controls would work. I had to pull the plug on the TV to restart it. This kept happening every 3 days.
Today, the remote control buttons for the channel change stopped working. I have to keep going to the TV controls to change the channels. This is very frustrating.
I recommend that you do not buy this TV - if you do, atleast get the two year home service warranty so that you can get it fixed if the problem shows up within a reasonable time.

5-0 out of 5 stars philips 27rf50s
This is an excellent flat screen tv for the price. I did alot of research on 27" flat screen tv's and this was an excellent deal. great picture and sound quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philips 27RF50S
I bought this tv two days before christmas, mainly because of the exceptional deal i got on it, ...Although i have only had the tv for a week now, i can honestly say it is probably just as clear as the other 27" flat-screen that are "alot of money" I am currently using it along with my xbox and high definition component cables to play dvds/games. I recently watched Shrek and could see the pores in Shreks face! This tv paired with a dvd player and component cable is amazing! Don't forget to play around with the picture settings on a television before buying, the store displays are sometimes messed up because of people adusting them. I prefer the sports setting for the picture quality.

Strengths:So many key features for the price, component video input, comb filter, quadrasurf remote(allows you to bookmark your favorite four stations and access them with 4 color coated buttons, very nice), side mounted speaker(easy to dinstinuish left and right audio), side av jack along with rear, and really stylish!

Weaknesses:
If any, its very large and weighs 99Ibs. This doesn't bother me, in fact, with the side mounted speakers the tv almost looks like its widescreen format

4-0 out of 5 stars Philips 27RF70S
I first bought the philips equal of the TV in normal screen. Howver I wanted to step it up to the flat screen, and in rectrospect i beleive i made a mistake.
The TV itself is great but it has less features than its normal screen counterpart. The screen comes in pretty bright but that is adjustable. The sound is fantastic as is the 800 lines of resolution.
Bottom line it's a fantastic TV but the price margin between the flat and the normal screen is ridiculus. ...
Even with all I have said this TV is still more than worth owning. I Definitly will continue to shop [for] philips cause their products are incredible. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

A mere 2 feet deep, Philips' 51-inch, high-definition projection television offers a massive image while occupying a minimum of floor space. And you'll be ready to enjoy seamless, detailed HDTV signals in all their glory: full 1080i resolution via a digital set-top box (not included). Progressive-scan DVD players and satellite receivers are also terrific source components for this set, which includes a wealth of picture-enhancing technologies.

Designed to meet the demands of curved CRT faceplates, Philips' 35-point convergence brings with it the accuracy of digital technology for flawless convergence of red, green, and blue electron guns and a superb picture with no colored haloes.

If a video image remains stationary, it can eventually burn a permanent after-image into the screen. Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC) periodically shifts your television picture in increments that are tiny, but still large enough to blur image retention. Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A three-line digital comb filter gives you Improved chroma/luminance separation over standard 2-line glass comb filters for a difference you can really see.

Eye Fidelity gives you a choice between 2 different scanning techniques: progressive and interlaced scanning. Progressive scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines per field by displaying all picture frame lines at once, eliminating line flicker. Interlaced mode reduces annoying motion artifacts and helps smooth jagged lines sometimes seen on images of curved and angled surfaces.

The set's dual-tuner picture-in-picture lets you monitor one TV channel while simultaneously watching another. Its 10-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers. The set uses large, 4 x 6-inch stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials.

Connections include 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, 2 component-video inputs (1 HD, 1 standard), and a DVI direct digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device. A set of audio/video outputs lets you integrate the set with your stereo or surround receiver, and a set of side-mounted AV inputs simplifies hookup of a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR.

The 51PW9363's protective screen filter helps prevent accidental damage to the delicate front lenticular screen.

Amazon.com Product Description

Sporting a wall-like 64-inch screen, the Philips 64P8341 projection TV truly brings the theater into your home.

Video Features
This analog projection television features Multipoint Digital Convergence for ideal color reproduction and crisply defined edges. The CRT also features an enhanced green phosphor for richer, natural colors, and image flicker reduction. On top of that, the set's Progressive Scan Doubler eliminates horizontal scan lines seen in conventional television images. Its picture-in-picture feature is actually a split screen, so the two simultaneously playing programs are shown at full height. This feature also works with multiple video sources, such as the Internet, a videotape, DVD, video game, and, of course, conventional television programs. Finally, it features a digital comb filter, which enhances resolution by removing the blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl.

Audio Features
The 64P8341 features Philips' Incredible Surround, a surround-sound system designed to provide room-filling audio from the two speakers on the set, as opposed to five separate home theater speakers. It also features Video and dbx sound processing. Connections include side and rear component A/V inputs, two side jack S-video inputs, one composite A/V output, and a headphone jack.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of TV for an EXCELLENT price....
Picture is fantastic. I have it tied to my 1.7Ghz Compaq D500 computer, ... , running a Xtasy GeForce Ti4600, w/128DDR. Playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein leaves one breathless. One or two points of contention though. I also mated it up with Phillips home theater receiver, 5 x 150 watts. The TV however, does NOT have cinema link on it. A VERY usefull tool for tying the stereo system and TV together....Controls can be cumbersome and the P.I.P. so far ONLY works with coax hookup, NOT S-Video. Im working on that though....Watching the Sci-Fi channel/sports with coax just [is bad]. S-video is the way to go. Manufacturers MUST find a way to P.I.P. with S-video.....

So far BOTH of my nieghbors are looking into going the way I did..... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For [$] it's a steal!
It was time to replace our old TV in the bedroom. I didn't want to spent a large sum of money. I researched the web for different 27" models. After researching [a local store], I noticed the Philips 27PS55S got a lot high marks... commented about the outstanding picture quality and sound for a TV priced under [money]... thought this model was better than TV's costing over [more money].
I hooked it up to my DVD using a S-video cable. The picture quality was very impressive and crisp. To my eyes, I thought it was a flat screen. The picture quality was a good if not better than my Sony Trinitron. The other great features on this TV were the different screens (sports and theatre) and the sound fields. The Philips 27PS55S is a excellent TV set that has the picture quality of sets worth over [more money], I would call ahead to make sure [local store] has them, because the sale's clerk told me they sell out quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value for the price/performance
I first saw this TV at BestBuy but it was out of stock in all places like BestBuy, CircuitCity & Costco except floor display model. Finally I located this model here at Amazon which was shipped free to my door during special promotion period.

27PS55S is in a silver cabinet with 3 sets of video input, there's 1 video input locate at side panel with headphone jack which is less distracting than other model's front input. In addition to S-Video, it also provides Component Video input which can only be found in higer priced models. It's not as heavy or deep as other models as well.

The Philips TV screen is more flat than my old sony 27" trinitron & other none pure flat models in store, what brings my attention to this TV at the store is its picture quality & sound, it sounds much better than sony 27FS13 wega & picture quality is as good as (if not better) than those pure flat model when watching DVD in store.

At home I set it up with component input for DVD, RF input for antenna & RCA input for Dish Satellite, since my local TV reception signal is weak, the TV looks more 'grainy' compare with my old Sony, but when watching DVD or Satellite TV, this TV really out shines all models with similar price range I've watched. It takes a little tweaking of video setting to reach the optimum effect. DVD movies looks stunningly good on this set with either Component or S-Video connection.

Remote control can be programmed for up to 3 devices, instead of input preset code, I used it to program my generic satellite receiver command without any problem, buttons are small but adequate enough to provide basic operations.

For mere $299, this model offers outstanding performance/price ratio than any other TV in the market. For more revews or product pic/specification you may try Circuity City's web site.

1-0 out of 5 stars beware the philips wolf in sheep's clothing...
Our purchase of this tv was in february 2003.

It worked beautifully for 2 whole months! At that point the sound would intermittently drop out for long periods of time. after a couple weeks of this and not wanting to be without a tv, we took our old tv in for repair.

After waiting just one week for our original 15 year old zenith to be repaired, we brought in the philips for warranty repair (which only covered parts at that point). To make a long story short, the repair shop has had our tv over 7 months. They replaced several parts of which none were successful. For the past several months philips' customer care and return authorization department has been giving us the run-around, refusing to replace it.

After calling the corporate office switchboard in Atlanta(which incidently isn't provided through customer care website links, just the site map), Freddie finally told us that we would have a new tv in 7 to 14 days...

WE'LL SEE!!

But I still won't buy a philips product of any kind ever again.

And you shouldn't either unless you are a true masocist...

5-0 out of 5 stars Phillips Pull Through with Beautiful 27"
I bought my TV in this past January and I have not been unimpressed. The picture is beautiful for its class, I could go through all the great specs that would prove this, but why waste your time. I would highly recommend this TV but there are a few things I have found out with this TV only with experience. First off, how many people are used to the channel numbers being in green or white in the upper left hand corner the Phillips 27PS55S bucks the trend. It has the channel number in yellow on a light brown backround and some sort of note on if the channel has stereo sound in the right hand corner, also in yellow on brown. It's really only a bad thing for the first few days, but eventually I got used to it and now its a definate "non-issue". One other thing is on pressing the on button, the little red light showing that the TV is on goes on, but the picture and sound only appears after approximatly 6 seconds. Again nothing to not buy this TV over but don't think there's something wrong with your TV if it happens.
Overall the picture is amazing, the sound is phenominal, the remote is set up well, and the value is unbelievable. 5 stars well deserved. I stronly suggest to all of you that you buy this TV. Also note, that shopping around can find you a much better price, just do a little research and you can find it for 15% off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy so far!
I bought the Philips 27PS55S...The TV has a great picture and sound. The preset sound and picture controls are nice. The "personal" setting for each is adjustable with the on-screen menu (I adjusted the picture with a color bar generator- looks great). The TV offers many connections. S-video and two sets of composite-in and one set of composite-out. The location of one set of composite-in plugs is one the side (I like that better than in the front) along with a headphone jack. I am connected to cable and find the picture quality varies, depending on the channel as transmitted by Comcast. You can set the TV from the menu manually for the type signal or automatically to detect the type signal. I have mine set for automatic so when the cable goes out the TV automatically switches to receiving broadcast format using the cable line as an antenna. Of course not all local stations are picked up with this method. I should use an A_B switch for a real antenna until the cable comes back on but that is usually 5 minutes. The picture from this method is good for the stations this makeshift antenna provides and OK for 5 minutes. The DVD and VCR pictures are great. The composite sound outputs are nice but are not controlled by the volume control of the set. I have them connected to powered speakers which allows me to control the volume with a knob. Althought the speakers with the TV are just fine by themselves. I also keep the TV well ventilated as hot electronics breakdown quicker. I hope not to have the problems as some of these other people have had. I will revise my review if I do. The reason I didn't give this TV 5 stars is that is the best and nothing is the best. But for the features, the price and the screen size it is mighty close. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Philips' compact, affordable 20RF50S offers a quality, high-contrast picture from its Real Flat picture tube. The flat screen minimizes geometric image distortions while it keeps picture-degrading reflections to a minimum. The set's comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Dynamic video noise reduction, meanwhile, minimizes any residual picture grain.

A hallmark of the set, its QuadraSurf remote control lets you personalize and customize your channel surfing and TV viewing by family member or program theme. QuadraSurf delivers your favorite television shows at the press of a button. A pair of 5 x 1.7-inch elliptical speakers offer rich, full-bodied sound.

The set also houses an Invar shadow mask.

A component-video input grants optimum connection with a compatible DVD player, while a standard composite-video input accommodates all DVD players. An RF input lets you use the set with older VCRs and cable boxes, while its audio/video outputs facilitate hookup with a DVR, VCR, or camcorder.

Other 20RF50S features include an event/wake timer, a 240-minute sleep timer, AutoPicture (which optimizes brightness, contrast, color, tint, and sharpness), AutoLock (which uses V-Chip technology for parental control), and AutoSound (which lets you select settings for voice, music, movies, or custom). Incredible Surround simulates surround sound from the set's speakers, while bass and treble controls let you adjust the sound to your taste.
