Ideal for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, boat, or RV, the nine-inch AC/DC MD9DN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a combo unit, all with Toshiba's classy silver exterior and well-designed core. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy. A key on the included remote control switches between the TV and the front inputs when a gaming device is connected.

The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing, side-mounted speakers. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Other DVD features include picture zoom, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and VCD playback, and a tray lock, which secures a disc in the tray through a user-selectable onscreen code. This is perfect for securing retail demonstrations, as well as for keeping children from removing a specific music or movie title.

Use the "on" timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a favorite movie, or have the set turn off automatically when viewing in the evening (up to 360 minutes in either case). Violent or sexually explicit programming can be identified and blocked using V-Chip, prohibiting viewing by young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy in Ohio
Bought this item from Amazon 2 months ago at 30.00 less than they are charging now. However, it has a bright, crisp picture and the DVD works perfectly. My large Panasonic skips and misses, but this one is smooth as can be. The picture is great! I keep it on the coffee table and use it always, instead of my 27" Phillips TV. The electric bill has gone down about $20 per month because of this. I haven't used it in the car or carried it around much, but I would have confidence in doing so. The remote works well, but have to hold it up to the light sometimes to read the small lettering until you get used to where the buttons are. I would reccommend this unit highly, just because it works so well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junky product and service
I bought this TV in Fall 2003. The DVD drawer never opened. After driving many miles to the nearest authorized service station, I waited TWO MONTHS while they searched for the right parts. Now it's February, I've returned the original product to Toshiba, and continue to wait for its replacement to be shipped to me. At every contact with customer service, I've met with sullen and unhelpful people. They do not stand behind their product. I hugely regret buying from this manufacturer and will never again buy from Toshiba. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The MD20P1 TV/DVD combo from Toshiba combines a 20-inch screen television and a fully loaded DVD player. It features built-in stereo speakers with surround-sound output, a wide variety of playback formats, and much more.

The DVD player in the MD20P1 provides a clear, crisp picture with enhanced digital processing. You can take full advantage of that picture clarity with the versatile digital picture zoom option, which lets you magnify a portion of the picture onscreen while in freeze-frame mode or even while watching a DVD in real time. The feature is great for spotting details in movies or even adjusting letterboxed movies to fill your screen.

The MD20P1 plays DVDs, DVD-Rs, and CDs, so you can enjoy all your favorite videos and music. You can also play MP3s and view digital JPEG photos from CDs created in your computer with the MD9DP1.

Keep those discs safely in the player with the tray lock option. When this option is turned on, discs can't be ejected without the proper pass code, ensuring that kids can't get into the player and that your discs stay where you want them to stay.

Make the most of your music and movies with clear, clean sound. The MD20P1 sounds great right out of the box, with built-in stereo speakers on the side of the unit. When you want an even fuller sound, you can easily hook up the MD20P1 to a home theater receiver through a single RCA-type connection to get a virtual surround sound experience. The MD20P1 features Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound output. A headphone jack is also included for those occasions when you need to keep things quiet.

The TV is easy to set up and easy to use with a simple, icon-driven menu and one-touch picture preference modes. There are three preset modes that optimize the picture for sporting events, movies, and regular TV viewing. You can also create your own custom preset that remembers your preferred settings for brightness, contrast, color, and tint. The MD20P1 also includes a sleep timer to let you fall asleep while watching TV. The front-panel A/V inputs make it easy for you to hook up a video game, camcorder, or other components.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money
Hi,

I purchased the Toshiba SD-V290 DVD/VCR Combo for $136.94 on
8/27/03. It is now 1/4/04.

It broke this week. Less than four months of proper use.

When I put a VHS tape into the machine it is automatically ejected. Therefore I can not play VHS tapes at this time.

When playing a DVD there are pauses throughout playback.

Now I have to deal with calling support and probably paying to send this machine in for service. Then I believe I'll be going through the following process throughout the remainder of the warranty.

First I'll return the machine to Toshiba.
Then Toshiba will repair it.
Next, Toshiba will return it to me.
Then I'll use it.
At some point it will stop working again.
Finally, I'll send it back to Toshiba for repair.
Then Toshiba will repair it...

I can see this going go on for the life of the warranty.

This adds up to a lot of time and aggravation. Stay away from this product.

I believe this machine is poorly made. Poor parts, poor quality, and poor design.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total piece of Cr*P
My VHS loading mechanism broke after only 4 months of use. I'm now trying to negotiate a return.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T DO IT
After having this unit for a month and only using it once it died on me. The DVD would not open at all. After I unplugged it and plugged it back in both the DVD and VCR button stayed on and the clock wouldn't work. This all happened a month after I purchased it. Thank goodness Amazon has worked with me in returning the item.

3-0 out of 5 stars Remotely disappointing
One would think that in this day of breath-taking technological advances, creating a dependable and user-friendly DVD/VCR combo would be child's play for manufacturers like Toshiba and Panasonic. Upon setting up this Toshiba unit, the latest acquisition in what may be my serial quest to find such a machine, I am rather reminded of the occasional difficulty some folks have in walking and chewing gum at the same time. The Toshiba replaces a similar Panasonic unit (Model No. PVD4742) which I received last year as a birthday present. Having always been a big Panasonic fan, I was not surprised by the unit's excellent video recording capabilities or with its clever DVD playback otpions. But there were two issues, one fatal. First, the remote was an ergonmic hodgepodge of indecipherable function keys so tiny that one was almost forced to use a stylus to operate them. But that glitch was nothing compared to the machine's occasional failure to "accept" VHS tapes, i.e., a tape (no matter old or new) could be placed in the slot, but the door would not close and the tape would be ejected. Despite my best efforts to get Panasonic's attention, they would do nothing about it, indeed suggesting that since they had never encountered the problem, I was likely imagining it. Having written off that machine (resolving at the same time to shun Panasonic products for the foreseeable future), I was attracted to this Toshiba unit because I have also had excellent luck with their products, including an older VCR which functioned perfectly with the most comfortable and instinctive remote I've ever used. I also noted in this site's close-up of the machine's remote that it appeared far more simple than the Panasonic's. It wasn't until setting up the new machine that I realized that the remote's simplicity comes at a price. In order to squeeze in every function button apparently demanded by the discerning DVD viewer, they omitted a couple of functions one never uses, like, for instance, volume control. That's right, the remote enables you to make a DVD stand on its end and translate German subtitles, but you can't adjust the volume, and since there is almost always a disparity between TV and tape sound volume, you thus always have to have the TV (or another) remote at hand as you switch from one to the other medium. Absolutely infuriating! Otherwise, the new machine's functions are about average: VHS recording on SLP is OK, but not as good as the Panasonic's, VCR timed recording is more complex than necessary (and much more so than my older machine), and the basic DVD controls are straightforward and reasonably legible. But if I had realized that there was no volume control, I would have continued to argue with Panasonic or bought another brand. On reflection, maybe it's best just to have separate VCR and DVD players because it certainly appears that the combo's are simply too much trouble--for both manufacturers and their customers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terriffic display - works great !!
I have 3 TV's and VCR's in my home and I needed a DVD/VCR combo because I did not have enough space in my Sony TV cabinet to fit separate units along with tons of VHS tapes. I was worried that I would be compromising the VCR performance and features with a combo unit. The Toshiba V290 exceeded my expectations. The DVD, of course, works perfectly with great picture quality. The VCR slow motion, freeze frame and overall playback is very good quality. The display includes time remaining, time used, tape speed, and current time/date. The timer works perfectly. Instruction manual is 46 pages long (all in English), very complete and understandable. The remote control looks expensive - has 4 nice big buttons for the most frequently used functions. Why not 5 stars? The VCR tuner could be a little better. Some cable channels do not appear as clear as the I get thru the cable box. Overall, a great buy, looks great, and I would recommend it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The SD-V390 offers a convenient, one-unit source for high-quality entertainment in both DVD and VHS formats. The progressive-scan DVD deck offers high-resolution video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 software files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-V390 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Additional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

A four-head, hi-fi VCR gives exciting, stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes. It's even possible to play a DVD while simultaneously recording a TV broadcast to videotape. For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the 4-head hi-fi VCR utilizes a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Making VCR recording even easier is record-end search, which quickly finds the next space available on the tape for recording, eliminating the need for endless rewinding.

Into digital photography? This unit's JPEG feature makes it easy to view digital photos burned to recordable CDs. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid product, long-lasting use
Great price, great value, great quality, decent customer service. Toshiba is doing things right. The V390 has progressive scan which gives you clearer pictures than regular DVD players. The VCR has self-cleaning so you don't have to clean the heads often, maybe once every couple years should suffice. Everything works fine. Obviously, you can't copy most commercial DVD movies to VHS tape, due to Macrovision protection. Toshiba and Panasonic now also sell DVD burners for home use, and they are cool (but still expensive).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but remote needs work
I found the response speed to the rewind/fast forward button rather slow. The VCR timer programming for recording is extremely awkward. For example, instead of pressing the numbers to set the start/end times, you have to hold down an arrow button for a long time to get to the hour/minute as there is no separate hour/minute/am-pm setting. When rewinding/fast forwarding while playing, the counter will not appear on the TV screen but only on the VCR.

The position of the buttons favor the DVD player even when the buttons are shared functions with the VCR. When using the VCR you have to hunt for certain buttons. Most of the important buttons are rather small. Certain functions which can be shared have separate buttons.

As you can see, I use the VCR a lot more. You do not have to turn off the unit to activate the timer like other VCRs, which allows you to watch DVDs while recording, but became a problem when it recorded over a tape I was watching.

Size of unit is deeper and wider than our old VCR and DVD players but still fits in our standard size wall unit.

Some good things are that the picture quality seems better than the other VCRs I have. Also has front and back inputs which allows us to hook up the cable (back) and camcorder (front).

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Product
Video Tape recording quality poor and sometimes wouldn't record at all even after cleaning the heads and buying new tapes. Warranty is useless.

Remote is poorly designed. Also, you cannot use the numeric keypad to set the time when you want to record.

Switched to the Panasonic DVD Recorder with an 80 GB hard drive and will never go back to tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
Great combo! We've had about a year and it has worked beautifully for us! Very user-friendly. No problems whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD-DCR Combo
I know a lot of people are against combo systems, but I have never had a problem with this machine. It performs great and tapes well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Small TV
I recently purchased this TV. Took it out of the box, turned it on, and it worked extremely well. As with most Toshiba TVs, the picture is very nice, especially for not being a flat screen TV. Also, it plays DVDs quite well. My only complaint is that the DVD tray ejects too slow for my taste, but it only takes a few seconds, just longer than most stand alone DVD players. The DVD player can also be noisy at first when the disc begins to spin. The remote that comes with the TV is set up quite nicely, and the buttons glow in the dark, which is a nice feature, however, you cannot read what the buttons do, just see them. One thing I was surprised at is Toshiba actually provides batteries for the remote. Nothing major, but a nice touch.
Overall, for the price, you get a nice combo TV. It has the excellent picture quality that most Toshiba TVs have, and the DVD player that is bundled with it works very well. You cannot purchase a nicer stand alone 19" TV and a seperate quality DVD player for a better price than this TV. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 of 3 units failed within weeks of purchase
I initially purchased two units. One failed intermittently and the other failed completely. I returned the one and received a new one from the factory. It failed within a week. Additionally, the one that failed intermittently has rolled over for good.

The failure of all three was the power. They would all shut off immediately after they were turned on...within a second or two. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars brokedown within 4 months
I like the price and size, but after only four months, the DVD wasn't working and I had to bring it to a technician, that took over a month to fix it. Even with the warranty, it still cost almost $100 to fix. I could have bought a new one!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A WINNER RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!
After extensive product review and comparison, I recently purchased the Toshiba MD13N1 13" TV/DVD Combo for my kitchen and have been very pleased with the unit. It's a snap to set up: just take it out of the box, connect to your antenna or cable system and plug it in........ couldn't be easier. The picture is crystal clear and the colors are vibrant! The DVD player is very easy to operate and the remote is great! A TOTAL WINNER!

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Disappointing
Bought one unit and it failed after a week of use; power problem. I tried it in different outlets and even on a surge protector, but it kept shutting off on its own. I returned it and bought another one, hoping for better luck. Same problem just happened with this TV. I'm not going back to get another Toshiba TV, and you shouldn't either.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
I just picked up this great little Toshiba TV/VCR combo for my brother who is living the dorm life.

He says it is perfect in that it takes up much less space than a TV and a clunky VCR, the reception, picture and color are good and it's easy to move around or bring to another dorm room to watch movies.

I say it's perfect because it cost less than a hundred dollars and made my brother so happy. Thanks Toshiba! ... Read more

Great for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, or office, the 20-inch MW20FN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a VCR, all in one space-saving unit cased in Toshiba's classy silver exterior. The set's FST PURE flat tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great But Shipped Broken
3-25-2004
I got this tv yesterday and it is great... but I noticed that it had wavy, bloby colors around the sides on dvd, vhs, and tv on all channels and a tiny crack in the corner. So I just emailed Amazon to ship me another one and pick up the broken one at the same time. They emailed back and said they would.I haven't receid it yet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba Picture Great!!! However, Does not Ship well.
The television picture is gourgeous. The DVD features are wonderfull. I taped a program on the VCR and the re-play was virtually DVD quality. However, it is a very low price for a flat screen TV. And I think the low cost is mostly in the TV console. It seems to be tin and plastic. And it does not travel well. My set arrived with a couple of dings in the console. Then I notice there was a spot where it was cracked and compressed as if from being dropped.

Therefore I give the Toshiba MW20FN1 20" Flat Screen TV-DVD-VCR Combo 5 stars for quality at that price. Exceptional. - 2 Stars for ruggedness and shippability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are dents a feature?
Like another reviewer, I received the unit with some dents in the frame along the bottom, front-right side. The box and packing materials were in good shape, so this appears to be a Toshiba quality control issue, unrelated to the retailer or shipper. On the positive side, it was very easy to connect and configure. The user guide is adequate, reasonably easy to understand, and well illustrated. If you have special connectivity requirements, you won't find any of the necessary cables in the box. Picture quality on the flat screen is excellent, and the sound quality is also very good, better still passed through my bookshelf hi-fi system. This was true for cable TV, VHS and DVD playback. I chose an old tape for VCR testing purposes, and I was very happy with the color, sharpness, and audio. I picked a "difficult" DVD disk -- i.e., dual-layer, "funky" color/surface/reflectivity factor -- and was surprised that it played flawlessly, first try. This "killer" disk has defeated a number of other players, so I've decided to keep the unit I received, dents and all. Like they say, handsome is as handsome does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought as a gift for my parents
I bought this item as a gift for my parents. While they love it, the sound, picture and clarity, the item came dented in several areas around the frame. It was noticable but not significant enough to return such a big item. The dents did not interfere with the picture or the sound, so....we kept it. All in all agood product, but disapointed in the way it came, since it obviously happened before it left the warehouse since the box itself was not damaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME TV
This TV is very cool and easy to manage. The combination is perfect and you will never have to keep buying millions of separate machines cause this TV will revolutionize the industry!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The SD-V291 offers a convenient, one-unit source for high-quality entertainment in both DVD and VHS formats. The DVD deck plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) music files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. A four-head, hi-fi VCR gives you exciting stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes. You can even play a DVD while simultaneously recording a TV broadcast to videotape, and you can copy non-Macrovision-protected DVDs to videotape--perfect for sharing edited, DVD-based home movies with loved ones.

Into digital photography? This dual-deck model is a perfect complement to your hobby. Its JPEG feature makes it easy to view digital photo shots burned to recordable CDs from a variety of digital cameras. The unit's array of home-theater-ready video connections includes composite-, S-video, and ColorStream component-video outputs (the VCR requires its own composite-video or RF audio/video connection). The DVD player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs (one each for the DVD player and the VCR) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals from DVDs can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck.

For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the four-head hi-fi VCR uses a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Commercial skip lets you pass over commercials during playback. Other features include one-year, eight-event programming, high-speed (200x) rewind and fast-forward, index skip, auto head cleaner, and auto clock set--no more flashing "12:00"!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Combo!
I was surprised at the negative reviews for this DVD/VCR combo because I've been very pleased with ours.

I found the set-up to be very simple. It plays DVD's very clear. The only time I heard a "whirring" sound was when I had the DVD paused, and it wasn't very loud.

The VCR also works nicely, and I like that you can be recording a Television show while watching a DVD. We've used this feature a few times already. The shows we've recorded were just as clear as when they originally played.

The remote is a little overwhelming at first, but if you take a look at the instructions, it's very easy to understand. Every remote takes some getting used to at first since they're all different.

I'm overall very pleased with this DVD/VCR combo and have recommended it to friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this combo
I would suggest buying a different brand combo. This one makes noise when it is not playing but the unit is on. Also, you have to select "Timer Record" on the remote control or your timer will not record. Then it takes you into DVD mode until your program is on. Other models you just have to turn off and the timer will work. Also, the auto tracking is just terrible on this if it is a tape recorded on another vcr. Your have to use manual tracking and it doesn't get the picture right after doing that either. Plus the dvd doesn't always pick up where you left off if you stopped watching the dvd in the middle. Sometimes it starts back at the beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not work from day 1
The little door from the DVD player did not open.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does its job, not much else
My VCR died and the kids needed a new one. I rushed out and bought a VCR at a local shop. Then I did some research online. Found this great deal on this model; and it was DVD & VCR to boot. It does what its job, but not much else - kind of sad in this price range.
Some of my gripes include:
~ When playing a DVD, the chapter does not show on the display.
~ If in DVD mode, and you insert a VCR tape it doesn't switch automatically to VCR mode.
~ The remote has no universal capabilities what so ever. I'd at least like to change the channel, volume, power to the TV with one remote.

Overall, a good model that could be better for the price(...).

1-0 out of 5 stars DVD door did not open at all
I ordered one about 2 weeks back. Price was very attractive got it 108 - 20 (rebate) = 88 from amazon.

Opened the player from the box and connected it. The DVD door would not open at all. The finish and material quality is also very poor. Returned it for a full refund from Amazon.

Generally Toshiba is good but this is my second bad experience with Toshiba product. First being a defective brand new laptop. My friends have problems with their 27 " Toshiba TVs too. Toshiba once even replaced the TV for free of charge....But I think they are not focussing on quality these days. ... Read more

Video features
Toshiba's MD9DL1 offers a 9-inch CRT screen, full onscreen display for easy setup and operation, full closed captioning to assist those hard of hearing or new to the English language, and auto degauss to ensure regular maintenance. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best purchase I've made in awhile...
I bought this unit like-new...with the intention of using it in my SUV on weekend trips. It has turned into not only a great system for my car (even hooks into my car stereo via the easily accessible headphone jack), but a great 2nd TV/DVD for my small house.

The unit works great, the controls intuitive, and a plus for "folks like me who tend to lose stuff like remotes" is that the DVD menus are navigable via the controls on the unit.

In-Car, I havent noticed any DVD skipping while the car was in motion. Sound quality on the unit's speaker is adequate for an enclosed room, and played through my car speakers via the headphone jack, it gives the impression that I'm in a state of the art theatre.

If you're in the market, this TV/DVD combo is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Travel
We bought this set for a 36 hour family trip. We have a van so I wanted a little larger screen so the kids could see in the back. When you compare the price with portable players or built-in decks this was great.

We set the TV between the driver seats in our Chrysler Town & Country. I had to remove the passenger side arm rest so it would fit. I built a small stand to raise the TV up about 16 inches. The screen was very clear.

During our travels it never skipped. One nice feature is the resume play mode. When we would stop for food or gas we would turn the power off the TV. Then when we were back on the road we would simply hit the power button and it would resume where we left off.

One concern I had was heat. (With it sitting between us) That was not a problem, but we did have air-condiditioning on most the trip.

It only has one headphone jack. We have 3 kids. So I bought a headphone splitter. Because of the rounded case around the headphone jack I had to modify the headphone jack with a grinder to get it to fit.

All in all this television did everything I asked of it and more and kept the kids happy for about and an hour and a half at a time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible little system
I bought this system for one reason and one reason only: Entertain the kids in the car. I really did not care about the picture or sound quality. I just wanted something small to fit in the car and that I could easily haul around. To my surprise the picture is crystal clear and the sound of the system is awesome. You can probably find cheaper systems, but you cannot go wrong with this one. I would not trade my TV/DVD combo for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vacation/Sanity Saver!
I recently purchased this tv because my daughter, her husband, their two young children and I were going on a 3,000 mile car trip. We stocked up on DVD's, put the tv and the kids in the back seat of my minivan, and had a glorious trip. No complaints from the kids! I now plan on taking it to my gift/sandwich shop so that my customers can enjoy the DVD's as they sip their coffee or eat lunch.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only it fed my kids
Adoption is out of the question, but I had to find a way that I could raise my kids without having to look at them, talk to them, or deal with them. Thank goodness for television with built in DVD. I can have somebody else send them to their rooms and have the kids watch the same movies over and over again for mind-numbing, out-of-my-hair enjoyment.
Teachers in schools aren't what they used to be; they don't parent kids enough. They don't spend enough quality time teaching kids morals and that kind of nonsense. So where teachers leave off, the DVD/Television can resume. And with my latest welfare check, this unit is priced very reasonably.

Thanks to new technology, it won't matter that I've forgotten 3 of my 5 kids' names! Thanks, Toshiba! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Sharp Picture and Playback
This is one of the better combination TV-VCRs I have seen. Panasonic and Sony also both make good 9-inch TVs. Toshiba's combination TV-VCRs often gets overlooked. However, this is an excellent set and performs equally well. The picture is crisp and sharp. The built-in Digital tracking 2 head VCR makes VHS tapes look very good. You get front A/V (RCA type) inputs with a TV/game switch. The VCR has good high-speed fast-forward and rewind performance. It also has time-shift recording capability and a built-in head cleaner. The front panel features a useful headphone jack. The 'Black' cabinet design is uniquely handsome and looks better than other competitor models. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable and poor warranty
Less than a year after purchase the DVD eject mechanism
broke, making the DVD player unusable. Also, after 90 days
the warranty doesn't cover labor charges. Not recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars THE DIFFICULT REMOTE RUINS IT
To me, picture and audio quality are expected commodities on new standard televisions. It is only the remote that makes the difference. The Toshiba MD14FN1 remote is as difficult to operate as the Japanese language is to read.

1) TV functions are secondary and written in an indecipherable watery-orange ink. Difficult! 2) Essential TV functions are crammed together. A total of 27 buttons reside on an area less than 2 x 2 inches. The mute key is lost 4 down and 4 over, while an arcane "input/select" is directly under the large power button. Difficult! 3) The Numeric keypad is an after-thought, located 2 down under a quizzically prominent information key. Further, once you find the pad there is no raised #5-key to center your fingers within the 1 x 1 allotted inches. Difficult! 4) AAA batteries? This is the only product in my house that requires them. Difficult!

If you can't use the remote why buy the product?

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba MD14FP1 TV/DVD combination
I received this tv this week from Amazon, and was very impressed with its performance, both video picture and DVD.
I purchased this because it takes DVD/R which is difficult to find. All the reviews and press releases mentions this. The directions do not. I tried a DVD/R immediately upon arrival and it played very well.
The directions make noreference of hooking the set up the a satellite dish. It would have been helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the picture quality
I'm so impressed with this tv. I had a 13-inch Sylvania which had tinny sound and poor quality image--I didn't realize how poor until I purchased this unit.

This was shipped UPS and the packaging was quite adequate and it was easy to get the tv out. Super easy setup; within seconds I had a great picture and sound. The outisde is very sleek. Speakers run on both sides of the screen from top to bottom.

My only complaint is with the remote--they printed some buttons with a hard-to-read-for-old-eyes color so it was hard to figure out the function. However, the instructions were easy to consult and overall the remote is easy to use.

I highly recommend this to someone who needs a small unit but doesn't want to sacrifice picture and sound quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional quality for an all-in-one unit
I purchased this last month, and for those who are looking for a compact all in one DVD/TV, this is a fantastic deal for the money. It has a slick design, easy to operate, front controls, a simple remote control, and fantastic picture quality -- all in a pure-flat TV. I would highly recommend this unit if you're looking for a bedroom TV, don't want a separate TV and DVD, and want a compact, well designed unit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Failed on VHS Play
The picture is great, the sound is great BUT the very first VHS tape I played shut down the entire system. It is now going to the shop AND I get to PAY to have it picked up and delivered ! Toshiba is adamant that this 80+ pound is a portable for me. Customer service knows to say I'm sorry, but are unwilling and unable to change the no-pay-for-pickup warranty terms. I'll update this review post the repair. So far, it's nice but too expensive if it keeps breaking. Buy with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot
We have been looking and evaluating TV/DVD/VCR sets for over a year.
I waited until the price went down as when it first came out it was $599.
I am glad we have it. It does have the very best picture and is also the best looking. This is my first Toshiba.
It is so nice to plug it in and go.
Notice: as with most of the combos, you cannot watch another channel when recording another. You have to watch what is recording or turn it off as it will record when the TV is off.
It will also copy DVD's to tape if the DVD is NOT copy protected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall unit; lousy remote control
I find the 24" size ideal for the bedroom. It does play DVD-R discs as stated in the specifications, but not all media play equally well. Titles burned using the 1x Verbatim media I purchased at Sam's Club play fine so far; however, the HQT 1X-4X DVD-R media I purchased from CDR/DVDR Media(http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/index.html) hangs and glitches occasionally during playback. I believe the reflectivity of that media is near the lower threshhold of what the unit can read. The Verbatim discs probably have a higher reflectivity index which makes them easier to read. I'll just shop around until I find some 4x media that provides decent reflectivity and isn't too expensive.

Picture quality is quite good; more than adequate for use in my bedroom. My biggest complaint by far is with the remote control. The basic playback controls in the center split all the other buttons into an upper and a lower bank, with row after row of evenly sized and spaced buttons with confusing, unclear labels. The only functions you'll be able to operate by feel are Power, Play, Stop, Rewind and Forward Scan, and Pause. To skip chapters, navigate DVD menus, or even change channels or adjust volume, you'll have to look at the remote. Really one of the worst-designed remotes I've ever used; very frustrating. A couple of other minor complaints include the logic of the unit. For example, you can eject a videotape and the unit remains off, but try to insert a videotape or even eject a DVD and the TV turns itself on. Still, the picture is quite good, the sound is adequate, and even tapes recorded in my S-VHS deck are watchable (if a touch soft and oversaturated). A better remote, smarter logic, and higher quality sound would earn this unit a five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Picture and features
The picture quality on this Toshiba is excellent. DVD playback is very impressive. The remote is easy to use and all the controls are easy to figure out. With no wires or connections it is very easy to just plug in and start using the many excellent features on this product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Get home-theater convenience and elegance from a single tidy package. This 24-inch flat-screen TV houses a full-featured DVD player and VCR. Besides looking great, a pure-flat tube eliminates unwanted reflections from room light and affords a broader viewing angle than conventional tubes.

The four-head hi-fi stereo VCR offers eight-event, one-month programming. Its four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, while hi-fi sound records and plays back stereo audio tracks. If you route the stereo output to an AV receiver, you can even enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic sound from TV and Dolby-encoded cassettes.

Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio-video receiver. An auto-repeat feature proves useful for trade shows or retail applications. Side-firing speakers offer a broad stereo "image" for TV or tapes.

Front-panel audio-video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy. One-touch record simplifies setup of the timer for recording within a 24-hour period; one button starts record and allows setting of record length. A sleep timer saves energy and the wake timer makes a convenient alternative to a clock radio. Violent or sexually explicit programming can be identified and blocked using a V-chip, prohibiting viewing by young children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, three in one, for the $$$ spent!!
I bought this set to replace a JVC unit that I did not like the color or sound on. We have been pleased with the flat screen picture tube which has less distortion on the sides than other tubes and the sound and color are great. You can make fine adjustments via the menu driven controls on the remote. The VCR and DVD units are also easy to use and high quality to view. Everything is easy to control via just one remote. I would buy another one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice, but be forewarned!
I just got this and really fell in love with it. It looks so cool and is just the right size. Unfortunately, last night I discovered that it is impossible to watch one channel while recording another, which was so easy to do with my old VCR/TV set up. No where in the owner's manual does it address this--it just says you can't use the VCR while taping a show. (Duh!) Nothing about the rest of your channels. You can watch a DVD while taping something off the TV, but part of the appeal of VCRs is the ability to watch one thing while taping another. It is kind of a minor thing, but if it is important to you, you might want to keep looking. I sort of wish I'd just bought a TV/DVD combo and a like brand VCR--I wanted to get avoid having too many remotes. I think this remote is maybe a little too complex and the buttons are too small and too close together. Other than that, though, this is one nice piece of machinery!!

4-0 out of 5 stars High quality, easy to set up, what more could one ask?
Combo units sometimes get a bad rap because people assume that having everything together in one box compromises the quality one could have by buying a TV, VCR and DVD as separate components. With this Toshiba unit, there is absolutely no compromise, because everything is first rate. The flat screen TV renders an outstanding picture and the quality of the VCR and DVD are as good as if one would have purchased them separately. The remote, however, could be improved. The DVD controls are non-intuitive, and difficult to read. It took me watching about six movies before I could navigate my way easily around the menus. Thus, because of the remote, I can't give it a five-star rating. Otherwise, this is a great purchase, and kudos to Amazon[.com] for shipping it about a month before I expected it!

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY POOR PACKAGING
First, this is a great combo TV. BUT, do not order on line. I purchased this set in May, 2002 for $475 from Amazon, and it took three deliveries and three months to arrive undamaged. The first set was so bad, UPS would not deliver, due to broken glass. The plastic shell was broken on the second set delivered by a common carrier. Finally, the third set delivered by DLP was Ok.

The packaging from Toshiba is the typical exterior cardboard, with interior styrofoam on the ends, but the center is virtually unprotected. At the time I was saving about $100 (including delivery) from Best Buy - Not worth the headaches.....

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I received it with a big dent on top and when I turned it on the whole left upper corner was green. What wasn't damaged was all static. Hope this doesn't represent all of them, but it turned me off. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Great for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, or office, the 20-inch MD20FN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a combo unit, all with Toshiba's classy silver exterior and well-designed core. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy. A key on the included remote control switches between the TV and the front inputs when a gaming device is connected.

The MD20FN1's FST PURE Flat picture tube widens viewing angles and heightens picture linearity relative to traditional tube designs, delivering accurate, life-like images. Its digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).

The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing, side-mounted speakers. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Other DVD features include picture zoom, video CD playback, and a parental lock that secures a disc in the tray through a user-selectable onscreen code. This is perfect for securing retail demonstrations, as well as for keeping children from removing--or inserting--a specific music or movie title.

Auto channel memory simplifies TV setup, and StableSound keeps commercials from blaring forth twice as loud as the movie they just interrupted. Have the set turn off after a preset duration when viewing in the evening using the built-in sleep timer, and block violent or sexually explicit programming using V-Chip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV/DVD
I purchased this tv about 1-1/2 to 2 years ago and at the time it was over 400 dollars- now they lowered the price and its great deal for the quality of it. Excellent picture and very conveniant with the dvd player built in. I purchased this for the look, and mainly for the dvd built right in because it was so easy to use. It also plays cd's, dvd's, and you can hook up your gaming stuff to it. Also has spot where you can plug in headphones in the tv and listen to it that way. Great value and look- perfect size for college kids or someone who isnt looking for a huge tv or too small- its perfect size and works great, Highly recomended. 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great deal for the money
I have had mine for about a month. The picture is very clear much different with a flat screen. The color is very clear and when playing a DVD the picture is excellent. Looks much better than when I used a separate DVD player. The remote control is easy to use and glows in the dark. The sound is good except for occasional changing from speaker to speaker or blank outs which may be the reception from the cable. Its a little larger than expected with the side speakers and a pretty deep unit so if you are putting it in a small space measure first. Great for the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Terrific
This tv is excellent. I bought it to put in the kitchen and to also be able to put it in the van for road trips so the kids are happy and occupied. I originally purchased an RCA model and it was nowhere near this one. The RCA broke down and I replaced it wih this model. The picture is very clean and movies look great on it. I highly recommend this TV! Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Picture and Player
This is one of the better combination TV-VCRs I have seen. Panasonic and Sony also both make good 13inch TVs. Toshiba's combination TV-VCRs often gets overlooked. However, this is an excellent set and performs equally well. The picture is crisp and sharp. The built-in Digital tracking 4 head VCR makes VHS tapes look very good. You get front A/V (RCA type) inputs with a TV/game switch. The VCR has good high-speed fast-forward and rewind performance. It also has time-shift recording capability and a built-in head cleaner. The front panel features a useful headphone jack. The 'Black' cabinet design is uniquely handsome and looks better than other competitor models. ... Read more
