Amazon.com Product Description

Enrich your life with the elegance of a flat-screen display and the simplicity of a combination DVD player and television. Toshiba's 23HLV84 saves space while simplifying hookups. Plug it in, pop in a movie, and sit back to enjoy your program in vivid, lifelike high-contrast detail. With minimal glare, no screen curvature, and no irritating high-frequency screen noise, this 23-inch set stands fully apart from its CRT counterparts. Set it on a table using the supplied stand or mount it on the wall using optional brackets for ultimate space efficiency.

The set's built-in DVD player is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, audio CD, and recordable CDs filled with JPEG digital photos or MP3/WMA audio files.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, long screen life with no risk of image burn-in, and space savings. This 1,366 x 768-resolution set boasts not only 2 ColorStream HD high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs, but also a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (sold separately).

HD Dynamic Contrast increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, separately optimizing the dynamic range in each area. Picture enhancements include luminance transient improvement, green enhancement, and blue stretch. This circuit is only active in sports mode and works with all inputs.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). Two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) and a set of front AV inputs foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear audio output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

And the 5-watts-per-channel 23HLV84 offers SRS WOW processing, which combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). If that's not enough aural excitement, you can also enjoy 2-channel simulated surround courtesy of Dolby Virtual Surround.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy the space-saving convenience and rich picture quality of Toshiba's compact, 14-inch SD-P4000 LCD television and DVD player combination. The set features a perfectly flat liquid-crystal display with 640 x 480 native pixel resolution and a built-in, slot-loading, progressive-scan DVD drive capable of playing not just movies but homemade DVD-R, VCD, and recordable CDs loaded with MP3 and WMA music files and JPEG images (digital photos).

This is an EDTV set, which means it's a step closer to high-definition or HDTV than standard TVs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts.

The SD-P4000's 3-line comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

The SD-P4000 also includes Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature, which performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

A component-video input grants optimum connection with digital satellite receivers and many digital video recorders, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate most other video gear (including camcorders). A coaxial RF video/antenna input also accepts feeds from older VCRs and cable boxes, while a headphone jack permits private or late-night listening.

The set also offers closed-caption display, V-Chip parental control, a sleep timer, and a remote control that operates both the TV and the DVD player. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba’s MD14FP1 combines an FST PURE flat-tube screen and a full-featured DVD player to give you everything you need to enjoy movies in one box. The flat-tube screen is designed to increase the viewing angle and eliminate unwanted room-light reflections.

The built-in DVD player plays a variety of media--not only prerecorded DVD movies, but also DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) and VCD (Video Compact Disc) movies, CDs and recordable/rewriteable CDs, and JPEG picture files on CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs (though some CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD-R discs may be incompatible due to laser pickup or disc design issues, and JPEG discs need to be in a compatible format).

For convenience, three preset picture-quality settings and a programmable one let you quickly change brightness, color, contrast, and tint without having to take the time to go through each one. A new icon-based TV menu lets you select functions quickly from pulldown menus, and menu text can be displayed in English, Spanish, or French.

The single-disc DVD player offers digital picture zoom for enlarging letterboxed video to fill the screen or magnifying a selected part of the screen. Other key features include fast scan (2x, 4x, 8x, or 20x), slow motion, parental lock and tray lock (a useful feature at tradeshows or to keep little ones from playing with the DVD tray). It also lets you choose from among multiple camera angles (when available), multiple language tracks and multilingual subtitles.

The sound system includes two double-baffle stereo speakers for great sound separation. Coaxial Dolby Digital sound and DTS Surround Sound output let you send digital, multichannel sound signals to any audio/video receiver with a compatible input. The TV also includes composite video and left/right audio inputs on the front panel, as well as a headphone jack in front for private listening.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots Of Quality In Small Package
For such a small, compact package, this Toshiba TV/DVD combo has much going for it.

First off, the picture quality is very good, with enough settings to allow it to be adjusted any way you want. I've never owned a flat screen tv in any size, and it does reduce glare quite a bit.

Sound quality is just ok. There are only stereo/mono/SAP settings. No separate bass/treble adjustments like in bigger tv's. But the stereo sound is passable, even when playing audio CD's.

The DVD player is good with very clear picture. Very nice.

Remote control is ok, and like some other Toshiba tv reviewers have noted, some of the colors that a couple of the buttons' graphics are printed with are hard to read. Pink graphics on a light grey remote color just don't make it.

All in all though, this 14" color TV/DVD combo is a great product. I really like it a lot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken twice in 8 months since purchase
I bought this item at Best Buy for more than the Target price. Two months after I bought it the DVD drawer would not open. It was in the shop for 2 1/2 months while I waited for a part to come in and then 2 months later the TV just died. Since the 90 day warranty for both parts and labor has expired the repair shop said it would be a minimum of $42 cost on labor, though parts are still covered. I am sick that I wasted $250 on a TV that didn't even last a year. I will NEVER buy another Toshiba product. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars NO to MP3's
I ordered MD13P1 TV/DVD combo from Amazon.com They said it would take from 5 to 10 days for Delivery .It only took 3 Days 5 stars to amazon. The discription said it would play mp3's nope notta will not Play them. As for every thing else works just GREAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice for Bedroom
I bought this item for my wife to watch DVDs in the bedroom since she can't figure out how to use the bigger SONY DVP CX-850 in the living room. The convenience of having this all-in-one unit perched on top of a dresser is both easy to use and space conscious. It's smart too, it knows when you pop open the DVD drawer, that it should switch to DVD mode for viewing. This is great for my wife who is "techno-challenged". The picture quality is exceptional and the remote is fairly easy to figure out. It has front AV jacks if ya wanna add other components like Playstation or Nintendo. There's even a headphone jack for private listening while your partner is asleep. All in all, it's a solid purchase. I got mine from eBay for $91.00... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy in Ohio
Bought this item from Amazon 2 months ago at 30.00 less than they are charging now. However, it has a bright, crisp picture and the DVD works perfectly. My large Panasonic skips and misses, but this one is smooth as can be. The picture is great! I keep it on the coffee table and use it always, instead of my 27" Phillips TV. The electric bill has gone down about $20 per month because of this. I haven't used it in the car or carried it around much, but I would have confidence in doing so. The remote works well, but have to hold it up to the light sometimes to read the small lettering until you get used to where the buttons are. I would reccommend this unit highly, just because it works so well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junky product and service
I bought this TV in Fall 2003. The DVD drawer never opened. After driving many miles to the nearest authorized service station, I waited TWO MONTHS while they searched for the right parts. Now it's February, I've returned the original product to Toshiba, and continue to wait for its replacement to be shipped to me. At every contact with customer service, I've met with sullen and unhelpful people. They do not stand behind their product. I hugely regret buying from this manufacturer and will never again buy from Toshiba. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Small TV
I recently purchased this TV. Took it out of the box, turned it on, and it worked extremely well. As with most Toshiba TVs, the picture is very nice, especially for not being a flat screen TV. Also, it plays DVDs quite well. My only complaint is that the DVD tray ejects too slow for my taste, but it only takes a few seconds, just longer than most stand alone DVD players. The DVD player can also be noisy at first when the disc begins to spin. The remote that comes with the TV is set up quite nicely, and the buttons glow in the dark, which is a nice feature, however, you cannot read what the buttons do, just see them. One thing I was surprised at is Toshiba actually provides batteries for the remote. Nothing major, but a nice touch.
Overall, for the price, you get a nice combo TV. It has the excellent picture quality that most Toshiba TVs have, and the DVD player that is bundled with it works very well. You cannot purchase a nicer stand alone 19" TV and a seperate quality DVD player for a better price than this TV. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 of 3 units failed within weeks of purchase
I initially purchased two units. One failed intermittently and the other failed completely. I returned the one and received a new one from the factory. It failed within a week. Additionally, the one that failed intermittently has rolled over for good.

The failure of all three was the power. They would all shut off immediately after they were turned on...within a second or two. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars brokedown within 4 months
I like the price and size, but after only four months, the DVD wasn't working and I had to bring it to a technician, that took over a month to fix it. Even with the warranty, it still cost almost $100 to fix. I could have bought a new one!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A WINNER RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!
After extensive product review and comparison, I recently purchased the Toshiba MD13N1 13" TV/DVD Combo for my kitchen and have been very pleased with the unit. It's a snap to set up: just take it out of the box, connect to your antenna or cable system and plug it in........ couldn't be easier. The picture is crystal clear and the colors are vibrant! The DVD player is very easy to operate and the remote is great! A TOTAL WINNER!

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Disappointing
Bought one unit and it failed after a week of use; power problem. I tried it in different outlets and even on a surge protector, but it kept shutting off on its own. I returned it and bought another one, hoping for better luck. Same problem just happened with this TV. I'm not going back to get another Toshiba TV, and you shouldn't either.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY
Great set. Another winner from Toshiba. I agree that that the set is very easy to operate and the remote is nice. Price was nice too and shipping was free.

Amazon.com Product Description

This 9-inch TV/DVD combo is all about convenience, from its petite, kitchen-friendly size (roughly 12 inches cubed) to its full features and portability. That's right: the MD9DL1 is AC/DC capable, so you can run it off a standard electrical outlet or from your motor vehicle's cigarette lighter--it even comes with a car cord.

Video features
Toshiba's MD9DL1 offers a 9-inch CRT screen, full onscreen display for easy setup and operation, full closed captioning to assist those hard of hearing or new to the English language, and auto degauss to ensure regular maintenance. The DVD player's zoom and game modes enliven your movies and games.

Audio features
You'll get Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel outputs--hook it up with your surround-decoding AV receiver to enjoy immersive, multichannel surround sound; setup requires a surround speaker system as well. No such hookup is required, though, as you can always listen through the unit's front stereo speakers. SAP (second audio program) gives you alternate-language or other audio programming on specially encoded broadcasts.

Connections
Front AV input jacks let you plug in a camcorder, gaming console, VCR, or other device, and rear AV output jacks can feed a VCR or an AV receiver. Similarly, a coaxial (single RCA tip) digital-audio output fosters hookup with a surround-decoding AV receiver. At the other end of the spectrum, a 0.128-inch headphone jack grants the option of private listening.

Other features
Auto channel memory, auto channel set, and last channel recall make your TV viewing a breeze, while DVD parental lock and V-Chip parental control help you keep underage eyes from mature content. The MD9DL1 comes with a sleep timer and a multifunction, multikey remote control. The unit measures 12.26 by 10.98 by 12.3 inches and weighs 19.3 pounds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best purchase I've made in awhile...
I bought this unit like-new...with the intention of using it in my SUV on weekend trips. It has turned into not only a great system for my car (even hooks into my car stereo via the easily accessible headphone jack), but a great 2nd TV/DVD for my small house.

The unit works great, the controls intuitive, and a plus for "folks like me who tend to lose stuff like remotes" is that the DVD menus are navigable via the controls on the unit.

In-Car, I havent noticed any DVD skipping while the car was in motion. Sound quality on the unit's speaker is adequate for an enclosed room, and played through my car speakers via the headphone jack, it gives the impression that I'm in a state of the art theatre.

If you're in the market, this TV/DVD combo is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Travel
We bought this set for a 36 hour family trip. We have a van so I wanted a little larger screen so the kids could see in the back. When you compare the price with portable players or built-in decks this was great.

We set the TV between the driver seats in our Chrysler Town & Country. I had to remove the passenger side arm rest so it would fit. I built a small stand to raise the TV up about 16 inches. The screen was very clear.

During our travels it never skipped. One nice feature is the resume play mode. When we would stop for food or gas we would turn the power off the TV. Then when we were back on the road we would simply hit the power button and it would resume where we left off.

One concern I had was heat. (With it sitting between us) That was not a problem, but we did have air-condiditioning on most the trip.

It only has one headphone jack. We have 3 kids. So I bought a headphone splitter. Because of the rounded case around the headphone jack I had to modify the headphone jack with a grinder to get it to fit.

All in all this television did everything I asked of it and more and kept the kids happy for about and an hour and a half at a time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible little system
I bought this system for one reason and one reason only: Entertain the kids in the car. I really did not care about the picture or sound quality. I just wanted something small to fit in the car and that I could easily haul around. To my surprise the picture is crystal clear and the sound of the system is awesome. You can probably find cheaper systems, but you cannot go wrong with this one. I would not trade my TV/DVD combo for anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vacation/Sanity Saver!
I recently purchased this tv because my daughter, her husband, their two young children and I were going on a 3,000 mile car trip. We stocked up on DVD's, put the tv and the kids in the back seat of my minivan, and had a glorious trip. No complaints from the kids! I now plan on taking it to my gift/sandwich shop so that my customers can enjoy the DVD's as they sip their coffee or eat lunch.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only it fed my kids
Adoption is out of the question, but I had to find a way that I could raise my kids without having to look at them, talk to them, or deal with them. Thank goodness for television with built in DVD. I can have somebody else send them to their rooms and have the kids watch the same movies over and over again for mind-numbing, out-of-my-hair enjoyment.
Teachers in schools aren't what they used to be; they don't parent kids enough. They don't spend enough quality time teaching kids morals and that kind of nonsense. So where teachers leave off, the DVD/Television can resume. And with my latest welfare check, this unit is priced very reasonably.

Thanks to new technology, it won't matter that I've forgotten 3 of my 5 kids' names! Thanks, Toshiba! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable and poor warranty
Less than a year after purchase the DVD eject mechanism
broke, making the DVD player unusable. Also, after 90 days
the warranty doesn't cover labor charges. Not recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars THE DIFFICULT REMOTE RUINS IT
To me, picture and audio quality are expected commodities on new standard televisions. It is only the remote that makes the difference. The Toshiba MD14FN1 remote is as difficult to operate as the Japanese language is to read.

1) TV functions are secondary and written in an indecipherable watery-orange ink. Difficult! 2) Essential TV functions are crammed together. A total of 27 buttons reside on an area less than 2 x 2 inches. The mute key is lost 4 down and 4 over, while an arcane "input/select" is directly under the large power button. Difficult! 3) The Numeric keypad is an after-thought, located 2 down under a quizzically prominent information key. Further, once you find the pad there is no raised #5-key to center your fingers within the 1 x 1 allotted inches. Difficult! 4) AAA batteries? This is the only product in my house that requires them. Difficult!

If you can't use the remote why buy the product?

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba MD14FP1 TV/DVD combination
I received this tv this week from Amazon, and was very impressed with its performance, both video picture and DVD.
I purchased this because it takes DVD/R which is difficult to find. All the reviews and press releases mentions this. The directions do not. I tried a DVD/R immediately upon arrival and it played very well.
The directions make noreference of hooking the set up the a satellite dish. It would have been helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the picture quality
I'm so impressed with this tv. I had a 13-inch Sylvania which had tinny sound and poor quality image--I didn't realize how poor until I purchased this unit.

This was shipped UPS and the packaging was quite adequate and it was easy to get the tv out. Super easy setup; within seconds I had a great picture and sound. The outisde is very sleek. Speakers run on both sides of the screen from top to bottom.

My only complaint is with the remote--they printed some buttons with a hard-to-read-for-old-eyes color so it was hard to figure out the function. However, the instructions were easy to consult and overall the remote is easy to use.

I highly recommend this to someone who needs a small unit but doesn't want to sacrifice picture and sound quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional quality for an all-in-one unit
I purchased this last month, and for those who are looking for a compact all in one DVD/TV, this is a fantastic deal for the money. It has a slick design, easy to operate, front controls, a simple remote control, and fantastic picture quality -- all in a pure-flat TV. I would highly recommend this unit if you're looking for a bedroom TV, don't want a separate TV and DVD, and want a compact, well designed unit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY SATISFIED WITH PRODUCT!!!!
We are very pleased with this TV/DVD set. The picture, sound and overall quality are the best for a 13" set. It is light enough to be portable and versatile with the a/v inputs (2). We took this TV on a 7 hour road trip to help entertain our 12 year old. It worked wonderful in the vehicle with a 400 watt power converter ...I would highly recommend this product to anyone considering it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Set!!!!!
It's compact, and it's beautiful... Just got this for my fiance to put in the kitchen to watch DVD's... It's just the right size... The picture is beautiful and the reputation of Toshiba is not tarnished here... It's a great value and a great TV.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality in a Small Package...
The first thing you must consider before buying this product is the size. Since this is a 13" screen, you really don't want to use this as the cornerstone for your Home Entertainment Center. However, as a tv for a dorm room (why I bought it), bedroom or kitchen it is a great size. This is a great little machine as long as you don't mind the size.

I purchased this system for my younger brother who is away at college and his old 13" tv no longer works. Since space is at a premium, we decided to get a small size TV. And the price on this set was so good, I decided to take the jump over a plain TV or even one with a VCR combo. Needless to say, we were not disappointed...

The Good: The image quality and sharpness are very, very good. It comes with two video inputs which are switchable from the remote. It automatically switches to any video game system that you have hooked up to it as soon as you turn on the power. It is digital cable ready, and recieves up to 125 channels. The speakers produce a good, clear, stereo sound at a high volume. The remote controls everything and is simple and easy to understand. Neat features include the ability to "zoom" in on the screen (DVDs) and continuously loop a portion of the movie over and over again.

The Bad: Size. The screen is small enough, but if you watch a movie in widescreen, it gets even smaller. This can be offset somewhat by using the "zoom" feature. There is a significant volume difference between DVD and TV, so if you have the DVD turned way up, when you switch to TV it will blow you away unless you turned the volume down first before switching.

Conclusion: Great little TV/DVD combo. The quality and features in both video and audio are great. The only downfall is that the screen is so small. However, if the small size is what you need (for a dorm, bedroom, kitchen, etc) then look no further...

5-0 out of 5 stars TOPS IN ITS CLASS!
This unit IS what it IS - the best 13" TV/DVD combo that I have seen. In its class, it rates a "10" for style, picture quality & sharpness, and sound. This DVD combo is no less the frontrunner of 13" sets than its VCR combo counterpart. The DVDs look and sound no worse than the VHS version. It is a perfect unit for small room viewing such as a college dorm, motel room, or kitchen. To compare a 13" set to a 19" set is just not a fair comparison - no different than comparing a Camry to a Town Car. For what it is, and for the price, this is a great deal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Value

5-0 out of 5 stars tv/dvd
What a lifesaver!! I purchased this for our 10 hr drive to Canada. The kids loved it which made the drive so much better..I had originally purchased a small portable DVD player, but was so glad that I returned it and bought this instead. The carrying bag for the car is such a handy item, it fit nice and secure in my SUV. I'd recommend this for anyone taking a long trip in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars ROAD TRIP SAVER
THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST INVESTMENT YET. WITH THREE CHILDREN WATCHING AT THE SAME TIME IT WAS PERFECT THE SMALLER DVD PLAYERS ARE REALLY JUST FOR TWO OR LESS WITH NOT MUCH SCREEN TO SEE. FROM CT TO VA WHAT A WAY TO GO. ONLY THING THAT IS WAS A LITTLE BULKY IN BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS WE HAD THIS IN A SEDAN.

Pros: Perfect size for car, good looking design, every function you could want.

Cons: Picture not as sharp as any [] 13", remote too big, no DVD info display.

Summary: We just bought the Toshiba MD9DM1 9" TV []and think it's a great bargain what it can do. It fits perfectly between the two front seats of our minivan, but I did opt for a canvas type carry bag that makes it hold in place really well. Everything about it functions extremely well, and I really like the front AV inputs as well as the rear AV outputs. That's a super design plus because the inputs are great for game systems or watching video camera stuff, while the outputs allow me to hook the unit up to a larger TV, say at a hotel or something and watch DVDs where there is a bigger TV, but not a DVD player available. I also really like the car power adapter because it's got good length to it. It must be at least 8ft because I can plug it into to my van's rear AC output and the cord easily reaches the rear of the TV up between the front seats. Many such cords are 6 feet, and wouldn't allow this. I also like that this is a stereo unit, with a headphone jack in the front. I don't know of another such 9" TV that has all these conveniences in one, at this great price. The Toshiba MD9DM1 also has an appealing all silver cabinet that is sleek and modern looking.

As far as any complaints about it, they're minor for me. The picture is not as sharp as a 13" [] TV I have it outputted to right now as I write this watching a DVD, but that was expected a little due to it's size. Also the remote it came with is as big or bigger than any other remote I own, counting 2 other DVD players, and 3 other TVs so not sure why they couldn't have gone with a smaller design. And finally, I find that I miss being able to see the time and track details while viewing a DVD, since there is no display on the unit like you'd have on a standard DVD player. Maybe there's a way to call it up onscreen with the remote, but I havn't found it yet in the few days I've played with it.

A great TV/DVD combo for any portable need. Great design and functionality. It has everything from front AV inputs, rear AV outputs, headphone jack, long car AC cord, etc. Super!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great small unit, there's only one major problem...
This is definitely a good unit; small, great digital sound, good screen size, with lot's of features (but no mute button on unit, nor on remote). However, you might be interested in buying this unit because of it's main feature, an integrated DVD player, right? But, here's the problem: sometimes it reads DVD's, sometimes it doesn't!!! My first unit, which was later replaced by Best Buy, constantly gave me an "Incorrect Disc" message on screen when trying to play certain DVD's. At first I thought, the lens might be dirty - those I cleaned with a professional lens cleaning DVD. When I popped in a DVD movie, Boom! same message on screen. Long story made short, the unit was replaced with a new one, but after about 100 hours of use, same annonying message. I thought ok, maybe it's not reading certain discs/movies correctly, but that's not the case. I watched "Ice Age" with my kids a few nights ago, and then last night I was just curious - I popped the...DVD in, crossed my fingers, pushed the Play button and there: them two annoying words again. Mind you, after about 10 trys, I gave up. I will put my unit to the test again tonight...

5-0 out of 5 stars A better deal than those extravagant tiny portable units!
I purchased my first DVD player back in 1999. I knew it was only a matter of time before I purchased a unit that my kids (3 & 6 years old) could watch while driving vacation trips and so forth. For the last 5 years I have used a 9" TV/VCR combo while traveling on long trips in the car. Since we no longer buy VHS, I knew it was time to upgrade. I sincerely wanted one of those cool little portable units that can be used on airplanes, restaurants, at the beach, and... hey wait a minute! I don't fly that often. I go to a restaurant to eat! And at the beach... forget about it! I didn't see the need to spend ($$$$) for something I would use so little. Not to mention the fact that they appear very breakable and I've heard of skipping problems. On the other hand, this unit is AWESOME! This unit may be larger and heavier than those cool little overpriced units that have "Steal Me / Break Me" written all over them, but let me break down a few of the advantages.

1. It's Cheaper.
2. You can travel in your vehicle with it.
3. It comes with a free car adapter (unlike smaller units).
4. It's cable ready
5. You can use it as a permanent TV/DVD player in your home.
(We use ours in the kitchen w/ cable)
6. The audio/video quality is excellent.
7. It's not as likely to be stolen or broken as a smaller unit.
8. Headphone Jack (You can buy a splitter and use 2 headphones,
this makes for a peaceful drive with a 3 & 6 year old).
9. It's a Toshiba
10. It's Cheaper!

The only negative thing I have found about this player is the "Mute" button. If there's a "Mute" button on this thing, I haven't found it yet! Shop around for the best price on this unit. I managed to pick mine up for ($$$). Now you can't beat that. My neighbors and friends are envious. I have relatives who paid twice this much for a player and watch a DVD on a whopping 5" screen. If you have money to burn, buy the smaller more expensive portable unit, but if you have an average middle class kind of family like myself, check this out! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Picture quality is good
I bought this TV for my bedroom and I have to say that picture quality is pretty good screen being flat also helps. However I'm really disappointed with Toshiba that they don't include Close Caption with DVD. You do not have close caption when watching DVD but you do when watching TV. You do have option of subtitle but how many DVD come with english subtitles(not many)?? I'm really disapponited with Toshiba because they advertise it as have Closed Caption but they do not. Also this DVD player does not have option of playing mp3s which most dvd player have these days. So overall picture quality is good but feature that comes with the dvd player is disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect 2nd TV
I bought this a week ago. I have it in the bedroom. The picture is really clear and the sound is great. Plus I can play my audio CD's through the DVD player as well. This is my second Toshiba, my other is the 36", I've had that for 3 years with no problems at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars it was good while it lasted.............
bought this tv about a year ago and really liked it til this past week when the dvd player quit working in the middle of a movie and the picture tube started to go...as it turns out, the dvd drive warranty *just* ran out...so it'll cost about as much to fix the thing as it did to purchase it. is this what i can expect from toshiba?

3-0 out of 5 stars Great picture, bad ergonomics
I picked this TV up the other day, it looked great and worked well. However the remote control is very badly laid out. For instance you will never find the volume control in the dark unless you memorize exactly how many buttons down and over it is. Also there is no mute control. There is no SVideo in. Worst of all for me was that out of the three universal remotes I tried for it none would work. I returned the TV the day after I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES YOU CAN SEE ANY CLOSED-CPATIONED
An earlier review indicated that you don't get to see the caption with a closed-captioned DVD while you do with a regular TV show. But mine works on both! I just bought the complete first season set of "friends" and am enjoying the show itself as well as the caption.

For the price, I don't think you can find anything better. You get a good picure quality TV and a DVD player in one machine. What's left to complain? I originally bought it based on my years of trust and good experience with toshiba and two positive reviews. Now if I ever have to buy another one, I'd absolutely get the exact same one. Almost perfect. Plus, delivery right to your front door from amazon. No time wasting, no lifting, no trouble at all.

It's true it's quite selective when it comes to vcds. It doesn't seem to read certain vcds. But it reads cds and cd-roms very well, with excellent sound quality.

Never regret I bought it. It's totally worth the money. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Great for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, or office, the 20-inch MD20FN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a combo unit, all with Toshiba's classy silver exterior and well-designed core. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy. A key on the included remote control switches between the TV and the front inputs when a gaming device is connected.

The MD20FN1's FST PURE Flat picture tube widens viewing angles and heightens picture linearity relative to traditional tube designs, delivering accurate, life-like images. Its digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).

The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing, side-mounted speakers. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Other DVD features include picture zoom, video CD playback, and a parental lock that secures a disc in the tray through a user-selectable onscreen code. This is perfect for securing retail demonstrations, as well as for keeping children from removing--or inserting--a specific music or movie title.

Auto channel memory simplifies TV setup, and StableSound keeps commercials from blaring forth twice as loud as the movie they just interrupted. Have the set turn off after a preset duration when viewing in the evening using the built-in sleep timer, and block violent or sexually explicit programming using V-Chip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV/DVD
I purchased this tv about 1-1/2 to 2 years ago and at the time it was over 400 dollars- now they lowered the price and its great deal for the quality of it. Excellent picture and very conveniant with the dvd player built in. I purchased this for the look, and mainly for the dvd built right in because it was so easy to use. It also plays cd's, dvd's, and you can hook up your gaming stuff to it. Also has spot where you can plug in headphones in the tv and listen to it that way. Great value and look- perfect size for college kids or someone who isnt looking for a huge tv or too small- its perfect size and works great, Highly recomended. 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great deal for the money
I have had mine for about a month. The picture is very clear much different with a flat screen. The color is very clear and when playing a DVD the picture is excellent. Looks much better than when I used a separate DVD player. The remote control is easy to use and glows in the dark. The sound is good except for occasional changing from speaker to speaker or blank outs which may be the reception from the cable. Its a little larger than expected with the side speakers and a pretty deep unit so if you are putting it in a small space measure first. Great for the price. ... Read more
