Amazon.com Product Description

The picture size and image quality you've always dreamed of is here. Toshiba's 46H84 widescreen projection television will make your favorite films and TV programs jump to life. Just hook up a DVD player, digital TV set-top box, digital satellite system, a cable television box--you name it. Heading the set's great features is CrystalScan HDSC, which converts all 480i and 480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-top boxes) to high-definition 1080i. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smooth, natural image. Selectable 540p, for those who want to maintain a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is an option in the on-screen menu.

A stellar 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction provides accurate processing of RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This high-end filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flickering, in complex or intricately detailed scenes.

The set's HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) input allows a direct digital connection with a DTV set-top box or receiver. HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV or monitor. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves contrast and overall picture sharpness by changing the speed of the electron beam as it transitions between bright and dark areas of the picture. Further, the TouchFocus automatic digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. (Manual override adjustments are available.)

For audio, the 46H84 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide, three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass-frequency perception for more dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the sound image vertically to create clearer voices)--enhancing sound quality through the set's own two speakers (which are powered by five watts per channel).

Built-in lifting handles greatly simplify positioning and, if necessary, repositioning.

Amazon.com Product Description

With its widescreen dimension and wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, Toshiba's remarkably affordable 30HF84 is set to bring you into the digital future. The set sports 2 high-definition component-video inputs and an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. What's more, the 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices).

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy vivid, high-contrast pictures from Toshiba's 32-inch FST Black picture tube. Affordable, stylish, and loaded with features, the 32A43 makes a great upgrade to a DVD or satellite-based home theater. The set's FST Black picture tube offers a flatter screen than Toshiba's popular Blackstripe tube, further reducing ambient light reflections and provides finer dot pitch and increased resolution. This tube increases the screen's viewing angle and improves linearity over standard tubes.

The 32A43's three-line digital comb filter and vertical contour correction further enhance resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

The set performs stereo audio and SAP (second audio program) reception, the latter of which is often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 32A43's 5-watt (each) stereo speakers derive a heightened sense of separation from their double-baffle speaker enclosures. A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources.

You get two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 32A43 also features color-temperature control, V-chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark universal remote control.

With the power return feature, the TV will automatically assume its last power state following a power outage, turning on again if it lost power while you were watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome 32" for the price.
Since the other reviews here already mention this TV's features etc. Ill just get right to it,I saw this TV in Consmuer reports as the highest rated 32" model among the many models tested, also Toshiba has one of the best repair history records according to Consumer reports , afer looking around I found it at Bestbuy.com on sale for $407 (as of 02/3/04), I'm really picky with picture quality (maybe a bit to much? =) but this TV has a really nice picture ,in fact it comes very close in picture quality to our $700 Flatscreen 27" Wega ,Also the sound quality is much better on the Toshiba, my only (minor) complaint would be the 'Black Retention' is a slightly weak (a tv's ability to maintain black in dark scenes without it looking 'grey') turning down the brightness helped this a lot but still not quite on par with the Wega,The factory picture presets on the Toshiba are badly set in my opinion ,After running the Video Essentials DVD I noticed this TV has very good Convergence and only a slight Geometry issue in the bottom left corner(picture "sags" down a bit) ,After running through the video test patterns on the dvd I ended up with the following settings: Contrast 53,Brightness 43,Sharpness 58, Color 48, Tint 0 ,Color Temperature: Medium, This may not be the 'perfect' settings for you but im 99% sure it'l look a lot better than any of the factory preset settings (Movie/Standard/Sports). With these settings watching Cable, playing Xbox or watching DVD's all look great.

The remote control is nice ,very similar to a Sony's remote layout,I was able to easily program it to operate my DVD player, VCR and Cable box.

For the money you really cant go wrong,Excellent TV overall,Also worth noting is even tho its not a Flatscreen it still looks flatter than most conventional 32" TV's I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture
I just got this TV to replace an old 31" GE TV I had. I looked at a bunch of 27" and 32" TV and this TV had by far the most crisp picture. It even looked better than a lot of the HD ready TVs. Make sure when looking for a TV that you see how it looks in low light screens as well as how crisp the lettering seems. These are the two areas where I could really see a difference in picture quality. Also, play around with the picture settings on the display TVs. It makes a big difference especially if someone else has monkeyed around with the settings.

Overall, if you are in the market for a conventional 32" TV, this one is a great purchase especially for the price. Lots of inputs, great picture, and good sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Picture and Value....
I also can't say enough about this tv.. I was in the market
for a flat screen HD TV ready 32" or higher and looked and
did the research and waited and didn't rush. I had gone to
the stores and compared pictures and I always went back to this
Toshiba, its even got a screen that is pretty close to flat and bought it and I love this set and I saved hundreds
of dollars if I went to HD TV ready. Great Picture and value
for those looking for a reasonably priced TV with great credentials. It also ConsumerReports #1 rated 32" Conventional tv for the money
even listed slightly better than the more than twice as expensive Sony FD trinitron Wega V310 at over $900.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars great picture tv for a reasonable price
This 32" is a great tv for the price. Since we don't have digital cable we don't need a digital tv and the plasmas tvs are too expensive for us. So after comparing the reviews on amazon and at the store, we decided to get this tv. So far so good though it is on the heavy side so hopefully it will stay in one spot. The colors and sharpness are great! We are happy with it so hope it lasts!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Striking Picture
A month after purchasing a Sharp 36C231 TV for our basement, primarily for playing DVD's (an excellent TV, especially for DVD's, see my review of the Sharp 36C230), my wife and I decided that we would like to replace our ten year old 27 inch TV in our family room, which we use for daily TV watching.

We settled on a 32 inch analog TV as providing the best bang for the buck. The consumer magazines and the internet reviews (including those on Amazon) gave very good ratings to the Toshiba 32A43. We did a side by side comparison of the Toshiba with other 32 inch TV's by Panasonic (32G8), JVC (32432) and Phillips (32PT563S). While all the TV's looked good, the Toshiba seemed to have the most striking picture and we decided to buy it.

After one week, we are very impressed. The picture is different than other TV's, as the colors are quite strong. Some might find this a bit unrealistic, in which case they could always turn down the colors and the contrast, but my wife and I like it very much. The reception is very sharp, probably due to the 3 line digital comb filter. The sound is outstanding and the surround sound feature is a plus. It has component inputs, which should give a fine DVD picture, but we don't plan to play DVD's on this TV (at least for the near future). Overall, if you like its distinctive picture, which my wife and I do, it's a great TV. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 42HP84 42-inch plasma television will thrill fans of both movies and sports with its widescreen, portrait-thin chassis, full high-definition resolution, phenomenal picture enhancements, and great sound. The set produces 10 watts per channel stereo sound with both Dolby Virtual Surround and SRS WOW technology to enliven your viewing.

A plasma screen gives you incredibly vivid colors, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than LCD screens), and a casing that's easy place due to its slim size--the 42HP84 is a mere 4.9 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (a table stand is included). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed in close proximity to lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

Heading up the great features is Toshiba's PixelPure proprietary digital video processing, which encompasses 8 different processing circuits that together create a consistently clear, deep, and accurate picture. Among PixelPure's components are: 6.2 million-pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution), real-speed progressive scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), a Magic Square algorithm (for smooth, natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas).

HD Dynamic Contrast continually analyzes picture information and enhances those parts of the picture with the most detail information which results in sharper, deeper, more film-like images. The 42HP84's 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

A pair of ColorStream HD component-video inputs provides the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals, like those from DTV set-top boxes, progressive DVD players, or satellite receivers. Other connections include a direct-digital DVI input with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP), 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, and a composite-video output (with both fixed- and variable-level audio outs) for use with a VCR or surround receiver. Front-panel inputs simplify connections with camcorders and gaming consoles.

HD Window POP (picture-on-picture) accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals and can even display 2 different-resolution signals simultaneously. The split-screen function lets you adjust the size of the POP boxes and will even let you view both 16:9 and 4:3 images at the same time. The set's 12 MultiWindow system makes it possible to see the main picture while viewing your favorites or doing a channel scan in 11 smaller boxes.

When hooked up to the IR output, the supplied TheaterLink IR dongle lets you operate up to six video components by simply pointing the remote at the TV screen, even if the components are hidden away in cabinets or out of view.

Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Four TheaterWide picture modes enable full-screen viewing of varying widescreen movie formats, while color temperature control provides three selectable temperature settings for achieving an optimum white balance.

SRS WOW creates an enveloping sound with enhanced bass and great dialogue reproduction. This system combines SRS 3D (for wide, three-dimensional sound), TruBass (which boosts bass-frequency perception for more dramatic effects); and Focus (which raises the perceived sound "image" vertically to clarify voices, even at low listening levels).

1-0 out of 5 stars End of a happy dream
I really beleived in Toshiba. We had 1 TV that lasted 15 years without a single problem. This model was exactly what I wanted,
for about 3 months. The DVD player quit. Into the authorized repair shop, 6 weeks and the parts were still not available. I suggested it should be replaced. I shipped mine back, $120.00, and they shipped a new set. Great service I thought. The DVD has quit again 6 months later. I quit! I can't face another fight or expensive return. Skip this model!

4-0 out of 5 stars a complete entertainment center
I purchased this tv combo, last October, 2003, when it was first available. I shopped around, extensibly, for a complete unit, in the under $500.00, price category. My real problem was how large the units were, other brands, that I checked out were LARGER, than the Toshiba. I was using the TV in a space that couldn't be adjusted for size. This is why, I rate it 4stars, and not 5, because even though it was a bit smaller than the others, IT IS STILL TOOOO LARGE.
Everything else is really good about it. I'd call it a QUALITY PRODUCT, and the AMAZON price is great, plus free shipping; hard to beat. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't use just any DVD in this recorder.
I just purchased the Toshiba D-R4, it is my first foray into DVD recording.I like the Toshiba brand and I liked the price, I purchased Sony DVD-RW media with it so I could start recording, this is going to replace my VCR.Well first you have to format the RW media in the recorder, reminded of 1984 when we had to format 1.44 diskettes.Well once I got the box opened and read the manual they, Toshiba, recommend you use JVC DVD-RW 2X version 1.2.Well I had my Sony DVDs so I started formating, it was a no go three DVDs later every one of them failed could not format. The next day I called support and they recommended I try JVC or Memorex brand. So I had to run around to 4 stores before I found Memorex DVD-RW, I never saw JVC brand. The Memorex worked fine and I am recording now but why oh why don't they have a label on the box or include one of the DVD brands that work with the machine in the box, the store I bought the recorder at only carried Sony brand DVD-RW.So be aware if you want to use the machine after you buy it get JVC or Memorex brand DVD-RW discs, of course you can use DVD-R or DVD-RAM I have not tryed those yet. Also watch the + and - signs, the Toshiba only uses DVD- not DVD+.It seems to work fine, it is more complicated than a VCR, way more options.Hope this helps. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring a sleek, space-saving design, Toshiba's 26HF84 HDTV-ready CRT television uses bottom-mounted stereo speakers and a stylish FST PURE flat picture tube, which also happens to minimize image-degrading ambient light reflections. The 26-inch set is as loaded with image technologies as it is with connections and conveniences, simplifying your home-theater experience while enriching it.

DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. A wideband video amplifier minimizes noise and distortion.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes.

And, since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry--selectable by input--optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).

The 26HF84 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included).

For audio, the 26HF84 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance your home-theater sound.

The set comes with a 4-device illuminated universal remote control capable of operating DVD players.

2-0 out of 5 stars $1100 Computer for teens
I just bought this computer from the Army Air Force Exchange. I am returning it after I remove my personal data.
My problems started with the USB ports. The computer has three USB ports, but only 1 USB Controller. I had a Web Cam, Ext Sound Card (w/ext power) and tried to connect my Memorex Thumb Drive. It locked the computer up. After locating the above deficiency in the engineering, I attempted to attach the 3 items to a externally powered USB Hub, with the same results. I was willing to work with this due to the reasonable price, but started finding that the software (Office 2003 - Teacher/Student Edition & Quicken 2004) that was installed were trial versions, that would have to be upgraded within 60 days. There is an abundance of software that keeps popping up to be loaded/DL'd (note; you can't tell when something is being DL'd, looked like computer locked up). Suspect that these may be trial versions as well. I would recommend it for a 15 y/o, if you have S/W already on hand to install. This experience was like buying a lot of Pop-up ads (a Toshiba Ad Campaign). I suspect that you would end up spending another $300 on S/W to get this up to a typical S/W package that comes with a New Computer. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Amazingly affordable, Toshiba's 34HF84 is ready for the digital future with a widescreen dimension, a wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, 2 high-definition component-video inputs, an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. And the 34-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

The 34HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multichannel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com incompetence
I ordered a TV for my daughters birthday three weeks in advance. Not only did it not arrive, but Amazon.com didn't even have the decency to respond to any of my e-mails asking where it was, or what happened to it. Do your self a favor, and NEVER buy anything from these idiots!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent flat-screen picture, the rest is so-so at best
I purchased one of these for the bedroom. I thought 24" would be a bit too big, but it's actually a nice size for widescreen letterbox DVDs when it's near the foot of your bed. The unit does take up a lot of space though, and it's heavy. 24-25 inches is kind of an awkward size for a TV--too big for a bedroom but too small for a living room. I thought it'd be convenient to have the DVD and VCR combined with the TV, especially only having one remote. Unfortunately while the TV picture quality's pretty good, the built-in VCR and DVD aren't up to par with units I could have bought separately.

The way you get the VCR to record, or stop recording, isn't completely intuitive to me, and the programming options are minimal. It doesn't rewind tapes too fast either. The good thing is, you can record a TV program while watching a DVD. The DVD player, however, is even worse--it takes forever to load a disc, move between chapters, etc. and it's very finicky about disc condition, sometimes refusing to load/play ones at all when my Pioneer unit in the living room doesn't even flinch.

Although it does have the desirable side-mounted speakers, there's only one on each side and they're a paltry 1.5 watts each, hardly adequate for DVD soundtracks or playing music CDs. But, at least is has digital audio output if you want to use an external amp and speakers.

The remote glows nicely if you've left it in direct light, doesn't have awkward buttons at the very bottom, and you can use many of the buttons by feel, however, a lot of them are same-sized and in a perfect grid pattern, and while the button glows the labels do not, so in the dark they really all look the same. The on-screen menus aren't the best I've seen either.

Overall though, I'm pretty happy with this product except for the slow and finicky DVD player. The flat screen does provide a good picture, and the speakers aren't too bad for low-volume listening. It's certainly nice to only have one remote for three devices, and which can actually control all the features. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's incredibly thin, high-definition-ready 32-inch TheaterWide 32HL84 flat-panel LCD TV puts you right in the action, offering up detailed images no matter what source you're using--DVD player, digital TV set-top box, digital satellite receiver, or cable television box. The 16:9-aspect-ratio set is capable of true 720p HDTV resolution when connected to an optional HD receiver;has an outstanding 800:1 contrast ratio, with Toshiba's HD Dynamic Contrast increasing contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images; and enough connections for almost anything.

For starters, the 1,280-x-768-resolution set has two high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs and a digital video interface (DVI) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (not included). Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them. Two sets of rear A/V inputs and a set of front A/V inputs (all including S-video) get your camcorder or gaming console quickly and easily connected, and a rear A/V output--choose from fixed- or variable-level audio outputs--lets you hook up a surround receiver.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs, Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 720p resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, further eliminating video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP sound for listening to two programs simultaneously, TheaterLink IR (for working your video components by pointing the remote at the TV screen, letting you hide your components), individual audio/video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, speed tuning, SurfLock, and a host of parental controls including GameTimer (letting you set a time limit for playing video games), channel lock, and video input lock. Set it on a table using the supplied stand or mount it on the wall using optional brackets for ultimate space efficiency.

Aside from the 10-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 32HL84 uses Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS), which heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). Two-channel simulated surround is available as well thanks to Dolby Virtual Surround.

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
An awesome roster of portable computers designed for those who won't accept anything less than the finest mobile performance, Toshiba's P25 series of Satellite notebooks will handle virtually any duty you might normally reserve for high-end desktop PCs. As powerful "desktop replacement" notebooks, they are somewhat bulkier and less battery efficient than today's new breed of ultra-lightweight notebooks. However, true power users will find the extra size a small price to pay for amenities such as high-end Pentium 4 processing, solid 3D graphic capabilities and massive 17-inch widescreen displays. This model, the Satellite P25-S526 Notebook PC, features all of the above plus DVD recording and a spacious 80 GB hard disk.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Satellite P25-S526 lies firmly in the latter category, equipped with a blazing 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading. Hyper-Threading, a new Intel technology, allows a single CPU system (which most are) to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end tasks. Running at 3.2 GHz, this particular processor would be one of the fastest in any notebook, but it is nothing less than spectacular with its Hyper-Threading support.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite P25-S526 incorporates 512 MB of RAM, more than enough for most situations. Ultra-demanding users may want to expand their RAM, and with the Satellite P25-S526 they can, to a boggling maximum of 2048 MB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. While a graphics card with 128 MB or more of video RAM is considered ideal for a completely smooth frame rate in state-of-the-art 3D games and 3D animation apps, this card is nevertheless comparatively powerful and more than enough for all but the most demanding gamers and 3D artisans.

Display
You'll love the way your DVD movies and 3D games look on the system's roomy 17-inch TFT WXGA display. Substantially larger than most notebook viewing screens, this display is especially notable for its widescreen format, the same panoramic configuration favored by movie-makers and some high-end game producers. And with a maximum resolution of 1440 by 900, you can expect super-sharp images no matter what application you're using.

Hard Disk
The Satellite P25-S526 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This amount of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today's most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound, and two harman-kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys, dedicated Windows keys support, and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll. CD controls include Play/Pause, Stop/Eject, Previous, and Skip/Next.

Connectivity and Expansion
The Satellite P25-S526 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless LAN for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an infrared port for interacting with wireless peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a digital (S-Video) TV-out port.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the system with today's most widely accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite P25-S526 is definitely larger than average, yet more compact than many other "desktop replacements" at 16.4 by 11.5 by 1.8 inches and 9.9 lbs.

Power
The system is equipped with a 12-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers 1.5 hours between charges. This is not particularly efficient when compared with less capable ultra-portables using Intel's Centrino technology and Pentium M processor, but is in keeping with standard desktop replacement battery longevity. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 24-inch 24AF44 offers big-screen quality from a small-screen set. The compact but versatile CRT television is equipped to deliver vivid, high-contrast pictures FST PURE flat picture tube, which looks great and minimizes geometric distortions in the process. Generous connection options and parental controls let you and your kids use the set for a variety of applications.

The 24AF44's 3-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Meanwhile, velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture.

Toshiba provides a user-selectable 16:9 mode for displaying widescreen images, which actively scans the entire screen, creating gray bars above and below the picture area. This significantly reduces the chances of uneven CRT wear or "burn-in."

The 5-watts-per-channel set receives stereo audio programming and SAP (second audio program), often used to broadcast an alternate-language track. The 24AF44 derives a heightened sense of stereo separation from its double-baffle speaker system, and BBE High-Definition Sound improves speech intelligibility and restores the dynamic range of compressed musical passages.

A ColorStream component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from interlaced component-video signals; standard composite-video inputs accommodate all DVD players and most other video sources. You get 2 sets of rear AV inputs (one of which has S-video) as well as one set of front AV inputs for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The 24AF44 also features V-Chip parental controls, GameTimer, a sleep timer, and a glow-in-the-dark, 4-device universal remote control with DVD operation.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good television
I purchased this television from Amazon a few weeks ago. It took about two and a half weeks to get it.

We're using it in a home gym in the garage.

I have to say that the picture is quite good and the sound equally so.

My dislikes are that the picture tube front is highly polished. If there is a lamp or a glare anywhere, you see it. I had to purchase a glare filter from a company in N. California for US$79.99 to cut the glare by about 50% and make it usable.

I'm sure if it was in the house this might not be a problem.

The other thing is that the remote is not particularly user-friendly. Set-up of the picture is awkward and inconsistent. The remote responds slowly to commands. We have a satellite feed and the TV must stay on channel three, just like a cable feed. If you don't turn on the satellite unit first, the TV won't lock on to channel 3 and goes to 224. A little over-engineered, I would say. Give me snow on channel 3 and let me decide what to do with it.

The unit takes some hard handling by the freight carrier and is packed OK, but now overly well packed. The plastic bezel on the left upper side of the picture tube was bent in shipping. Not enough to file a claim, but not perfect.

It has all the inputs one would ever need, however we're just using it as a simple TV.

The headphone jack placed in a flip-up cover on the front is a plus.

Lots of contrast, color saturation and good focus at all corners.

Overall, most would be quite happy with this unit. For $299 and free shipping, I can't see how one would do much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tv at a reasonable price
I actually tried an LCD set and didn't like it. But if you want a sharp picture and great sound without paying alot, check out the Toshiba 24AF44. The screen looks larger than 24 inches and the appearance of the silver color is attractive. It's really
easy to set the video and audio choices using the menu on the
practical remote. If you haven't kept up with the latest advancements in CRT technology, just compare this set with a
LCD or plasma. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. What can I say, a wonderful TV for under $300 and free shipping from Amazon. The picture using a DVD is flat out amazing. A real winner you won't regret buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars great 24" TV
Did my research and noted many of the same problems with the sony 24" model that others had cited (fuzzy picture at corners).
Came down to this one vs. the similar offering from JVC. I've always loved JVC products and it was basically a tossup--at 92 dollars less though the toshiba won hands down.

Exceptionally good sound (given the usual limitations of onboard speakers) using just the TV's own speakers...the bbe function does wonders for dialog clarity. I'll probably hook up to a low end surround system though. Great small room TV and the prices of the flat screens have finally gotten to be a real bargain. I highly reccommend. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Rely on it when you're on the road and savor its performance at home: Toshiba's SD-P2600 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio portable DVD player is distinguished by its sleek appearance, 8.9-inch polysilicon widescreen display, and high-resolution 1,024 x 600-pixel image. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast.

Besides media playback versatility--it handles everything from DVD-Video to DVD-R, VCD, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats--the SD-P2600 offers Toshiba's ColorStream PRO progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement its guarantee of stellar image quality. A sleek, credit-card-sized remote control simplifies operation.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-P2600 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection (Digital Cinema Progressive). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Further, a Toshiba feature called Direct Digital Solution sends a DVD's video information to the LCD driver directly from the unit's MPEG decoder in its original digital form, bypassing unnecessary digital-to-analog conversion steps to deliver the best picture quality possible.

Toshiba's digital photo viewer displays images right on your television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card slot to further simplify viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making your own slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo.

Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional 2-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. (DVD-Audio resolution is available through the analog audio outputs only.)

A pair of built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through 2 speakers or 1 set of headphones. Built-in stereo speakers grant headphone-free listening through high-efficiency titanium drivers in bass-reflex enclosures for more full-bodied sound than typical portables produce.

The SD-P2600 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The supplied lithium-ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers around 3.5 hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. The battery also charges quickly, in around 3 hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS ON THE MARKET!
The Toshiba SD-P2600 is by far the best DvD player on the market at under $500(Sug 699.99), It is loaded with features, Progressive Scan, SD/MMC Card Slot, 8.9 inch screen, Remote Control Anti-Skip & Car Cord Adapter, and much much more.... Car Cord Adapter is to short.
It comes with a 3 1/2 Hour battery, but I got 3 hours 50 mins wow! the built in Speakers go louder then most Portable DvD Players, But that is not saying a lot, get some Sennheiser Headphones or Earbugs, and or some Portable Speakers or Pc Speakers like Creative Labs SBS 350 2.1 just plug into one of the 2 Headphone Output Jacks, and you will have a Kick A_S System!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful picture, but expensive
I went shopping for a portable DVD player and the store I went to had about 14 different portable DVD players plugged into the same video feed playing The Lord of the Rings DVD. This portable DVD player blew all its competitors out of the water - including the two Panasonic models I came to look at. None of them had a picture that could compare to this one. The colors are rich and the black is as dark as I have ever seen. The sound produced by the external speakers is pretty good too, the movie is sometimes hard to hear in a noisy vehicle so headphones may be required on a road trip. Two headphone jacks are on the side of the unit. I have not experienced any problems with viewing angle when watching a movie with two people with the player inbetween us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Player For The Money
I looked around for about a month before I made my purchase of the Toshiba. There are a lot of players out there but after reading all the reviews and going to the stores to see them work the Toshiba was hands down the best for the money. Samsung was a close second but what I liked was that the picture on the Toshiba was brighter and sharper. The Toshiba also has a better angle so two people can watch a movie together with not having to sit on top of each other. The sound is great and with the head phones on you really could hear the surrond sound. When I was done buying my case , ear phones and airplane adapter it cost me a little more but well worth it. I really can't see why you would want to go any larger and spend more money because they are getting to the point that for a couple hundred more you can get a laptop. You will not be disapointed with this player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
I haven't had my player for too long but i am marveled at it's clarity. The progressive scan feature makes most of my dvd's stand out even more. Plus the fact that you can hook it up to a HDTV or any other kind adds more versatility because it can be your main dvd player for your place. The sound quality is above average with four ways to customize your listening experience. There are many features that add to it's personality. The most obvious feature about this dvd player is the screen size. At 8.9 inches you can watch movies at greater distances. Which means more people can watch at the same time without being huddled as if around a camp fire. I've used my friends smaller screens and when they saw this one they were in awe. I highly recommend this player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value at <500
You may have seen the no-name brands the big chain stores -- and they may be a good value if you just plan on handing the player to the kids in the car. But if you care at all about sound and video quality, you should at least check out this unit. The difference in quality is pretty significant.

Video: No comparison. The video on this unit is really sharp and colorful. The 'Mintek' brand 10" unit is larger, but much less sharp.

Sound: Again, this unit is the clear winner. At max volume the kids complained and asked to have it turned down. The dialog and higher freqency effects and music remain clear through the entire volume range. Bass is absent, but that is acceptable to me on a unit this small.

Usability: Digital controls for the most common features (volume, power and navigation). On-screen menu kicks the daylights out of the Mintek unit and is available without using the remote. The Toshiba is faster on power-up and navigation.

Build Quality: This is probably a wash. The Mintek unit uses analog switches for volume and power, and sounds like a washing machine when it spins up the drive. The Toshiba is quieter on power-up, but both settle down when actually playing the movie. Both feel like they would last 10 seconds in the hands of my two year old, but should hold up pretty well with moderate care.

I dont know about in-car use, but I would guess that would be a function of how messed up your disks and road surface are. Hope this helps. ... Read more

Asin: B0001W01JC

Amazon.com Product Description

The RD-XS32 DVD player/recorder from Toshiba combines a versatile video recorder and a high-end DVD player with a clear, realistic picture and warm, natural sound. The RD-XS32 is the perfect next-generation upgrade from your old VCR and a powerful addition to your home theater.

The multidrive recorders on the RD-XS32 allow you to record onto an internal 80 GB hard disk drive (HDD), a DVD-R disc, or rerecordable DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs. The HDD holds up to 103 hours of programs, and you can rapidly dub shows from the HDD onto a DVD. A high-speed dub of a recording from the HDD onto a DVD-R disc can be completed 24 times faster than the length of the program. In other words, two hours of recording can move onto a disc in a matter of minutes. DVD-R copies of recordings made by the RD-XS32 will play on almost all DVD players and DVD-compatible computers.

Toshiba's time-slip playback feature allows you to watch a program that is being recorded from the beginning while the rest of the show records. You can also use the time-slip feature to pause a live broadcast that you are recording, and then resume watching it from where you left it, whenever you want.

Setting up a recording is simple. The RD-XS32 uses Gemstar's VCR Plus technology, which lets you select the programs you want to record by name, without worrying about setting the right time and channel. You can schedule up to 32 different shows with this timer recording feature.

The programs that you have recorded are logged into an adjustable menu that displays the date, time, and channel that you recorded. You will also see a still-video image of the show you recorded in the menu. You can rename the listings and create chapters within the recordings that allow you to easily skip to your favorite scenes or to dub a cleaned-up copy of the show you've recorded onto DVD. The easy-to-use menu also features a live action window that lets you monitor the program you are currently recording or playing.

In addition to high-quality recordings, you'll get the most out of your DVD library as well. The RD-XS32 utilizes Toshiba's ColorStream Pro progressive-scan video technology to yield vivid colors, clean resolution, and reduced onscreen distortion. The RD-XS32 uses digital cinema progressive scanning to reproduce your DVDs in theaterlike clarity. While the RD-XS32 is compatible with both analog and digital televisions, you will get the optimum effect by using the player with a high-definition-compatible television.

In addition to playing a full range of DVDs, the RD-XS32 plays CDs and MP3 audio files, so you can enjoy your favorite music. You can also view digital JPEG photos from CDs created in your computer with the RD-XS32.

The RD-XS32 features rear-panel composite audio and video inputs, and RCA inputs on the front panel to connect your camcorder for dubbing onto DVD. An additional digital IEEE1394 Firewire jack is included on the front panel for an instant connection with digital camcorders. The Firewire connection automatically synchs up with your camcorder and creates a customized onscreen menu for dubbing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Serious black level bug, plus 2 minor bugs
This DVD recorder can be perfect if Toshiba fixes the following 3 items, especially the black level bug, which is very serious.

1. Black level bug:
Due to NTSC America's +7.5IRE issue, Toshiba should consider that almost all DVD players in the US add +7.5 IRE to output already. Currently, RD-XS32 does not consider this fact, so the recorded DVD looks "washed out" (too bright) in other DVD player.

The best way to solve this problem is to have an option of recording level to adjust the input signal boost. For details, go to avsforum or ask Pioneer enginners about how they fix the black level bug from old DVD recorder to E50.

2. There should be an option of "forcing to output 3 digits" to IR blaster.
A lot of digital cable box needs the input to be 3 digits to correctly change channel. For example, to switch to channel 9, IR blaster should output 009 instead of just "9". Toshiba should add an option of forcing the output to 3 digits to work with most cable box or STB.

3. Record speed selection:
There should be an option of selecting speed of recording instead of just looking at the maximun speed that the media can handle. This could solve a lot of problem when the media is not "that good as it claims".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Machine, Even Better Than Its Predecessor (RD-X2)
I loved the RD-X2 enough that I would only have considered another Toshiba. (Much as I love this machine, it *does not* do 90% of what a Tivo will do. Tivo has season passes, suggestions, wish lists, search functions, and other features that make it absolutely fantastic. Buy both -- they really compliment each other.)

This is an absolutely great DVD Recorder. Picture quality is very good. You can record programs onto the hard drive, edit out the commercials, create custom thumbnails and titles, even customize your menu screen, and with a 4x DVD-R burn a DVD in 15 minutes. Its definitely more difficult to use than a VCR, and the manual isn't particularly well written or organized (it lacks an index), but its not that hard to get the hang of it. It works like a computer, not a VCR.

Features I Really Love (in no particular order):
1. Burning a DVD-R in 15 minutes. If you want to control the burn speed, use a 1x or 2x disc instead of a 4x.
2. Editting functions. I can set the timer to record programs on the hard drive while I'm away, then come back and edit them with ease and speed. I mark the chapters, can batch delete (its quick) and then recombine the chapters to make a single title. Or I can manually set the chapters, almost down to the frame.
3. Recording quality settings. You can select the video and audio recording settings, from 1.4 (EP equilvalent) to 4.6 (SP)on up to 9.2. Adjust your settings to get the best possible PQ and still fit your movie on the disc. At 1.4, I can get about 6.5 hrs on a DVD-R, at 2.2, 4.25 hrs, at 4.6, 2 hrs 6 mins.
4. You can watch another program you've already recorded while you record "live" programming. Or you can use the "timeslip" feature to watch a program from the beginning while its still being recorded.
5. You can give titles to "timer recordings" so everything has a title in advance.
6. For DVDs you've created yourself (*not* prerecorded DVDs) you can recopy programming back onto the hard drive and burn additional DVDs.
7. To copy to VHS, you can create a "playlist" and have your VCR copy all six hours worth of programming at once.
8. Out of town for a 48 hour Star Trek marathon? No tapes or discs needed, you can record all 48 hours on your hard drive as long as you have enough free space (135 hours at lowest setting).

About the black level bug issue, I've seen it reported, but I've played DVDs I've created on a variety of different DVD players (Toshiba, Sony, Hitachi, a PC and a Mac) and never experienced what some of the reviewers have complained about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of both worlds at the best price
This machine is awesome! Previously I bought a cheep Cyberhome recorder that was disappointing. The Toshiba has many more features. It is a bit complicated at first but after studying the manual you can easly record high quality tv shows and edit out all of the commercials. The hard drive feature is the only way to go if you are going to record TV. The Toshiba is better than the Panasonic because it will record from the DVD drive back onto the hard drive to make copies and it will record to DVD-RW that the Panasonic will not. I highly recommend this machine.

3-0 out of 5 stars um.. 80 MEGABYTES??
i think the webmaster or whoever wrote the description of this dvd recorder need to know a little about the difference between MB and GB... there is no way in world that you can record 109 hours on 80MB.. this site needs to go on the back page of pcmagazine bluffs =) well. anyways, considering this DVD recorder has 80.. GB! it's not a bad recorder and although it's a little pricey, i'm still gonna go ahead and give it a 3 stars. Hopefully, soon, they are gonna change that 80MB to 80GB.. Goodluck!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing OSM and operation
This unit is so easy to set up right out of the box. As complicated and chock full of abilities its still a snap to set up a record time and walk away. For the more techo types out there.. there are tons of options to fool with.

Good Job Toshiba! ... Read more
