Amazon.com Review

The Plantronics lightweight headset is designed to free your hands while you drive or work with a wireless phone. Though the unit's noise-canceling microphone makes it especially suitable for calls placed over a cell phone, it's also appropriate for use with traditional office phones.

Recipients of our phone calls reported no annoying disturbances or distortions during conversation, and audio quality on our end was clear as well, if a bit muffled. The headset works best on phones that feature good volume controls, because the microphone adjust switch raises and lowers the volume in a very narrow range.

The M175 also has the nifty feature of converting from a headband to an over-the-ear-style headset. Unfortunately, this also makes for a somewhat flimsy construction. Pieces immediately began falling off the unit as soon as we removed it from its packaging, though snapping the components back in place took little effort.

Overall, the Plantronics M175 headset is a versatile, quality headset for those looking for a hands-free way to work with their mobile or cordless phones. --John Frederick Moore

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent when combined with Panasonic KXTC1851 Phone
I returned the M110 model due to very poor user voice quality. This model's user voice quality is MUCH improved. It also includes a very easy to use mute switch and volume level dial on the cord. I have to agree with other comments that the unit does not appear to be the most robust, but for $$ I don't mind buying a new one every 6 months.

I use this headset with a Panasonic KXTC1851 900 MHz DSS Cordless Phone (which interestingly is now selling for ... more than I paid for it one year ago). This phone has its own volume control and I have no low caller volume issues {that many folks have complained about with this headset) when using this combination. I set my phone at the mid-volume level and then use the headset's volume control for finer adjustments. They work great together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comfortable; sounds great; you may have to speak up
This headset works well with my Uniden 900 MHz DSS phone (EXI3965). It is light and comfortable, with good sound quality, and is easy to wear. Microphone sensitivity (when set to the maximum) is only moderate; if you are a loud person you won't notice, but the soft-spoken may need to speak up. That may be because the mic boom ends near my cheek, not my mouth - it should be 1-2" longer. The volume control has limited range, but was somewhat effective in cutting hiss from an otherwise noisy cordless phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works well
I use this headset with a Motorola Star-Tac. I works perfectly. What make this better is that it is tele-coil compatible, yet reasonably priced. I also find the over the head style more stable, especially on long rides in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars!!!!!- worth it!
I received the M175 in 3/2003- it performed as expected for 10 months (hint - 1 year warranty). The casing on the wire became exposed, which caused noise interference. I use it 4 days a week for 8-10 hours at a time. I got my money worth and recommend it since there are no others on the market with the mute switch and volume control inline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, great customer service
I own two Plantronic M175 headsets. They work on both my Vtech Cordless phone and my older model Motorola cell phone. I like the volume control, mute button, and adjustable microphone level. I have only used it in the "headset" mode, and it is very comfortable. And finally, Plantronics customer support is the best. Even though I have had to replace my headset (perhaps due to my own neglect), they have been very prompt with sending me a replacement at no charge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Poor Man's Wireless Network -- That Works!
I've used the RCA RC930 Wireless Modem Jacks to create a poor man's wireless network in my home. It works! And I love it! I can now sit in any chair of my house, surf the web, and print (across the room) to my wireless HP 995 Bluetooth printer.

My system consists of two sets of RCA Wireless Modem Jacks (a sender and receiver unit in each set) -- one set for the upstairs and one set for the downstairs (which appear to be on separate circuits and are not connected); a 3Com Bluetooth PC card for my laptop; and a HP 995 Bluetooth printer.

I now use my laptop in the following manner: first, I plug the RCA receiving unit into the wall outlet nearest where I want to sit; then I turn on the printer; and finally, I extend the little blue tooth-shaped antenna (how cute!) on the laptop's PC card -- and I'm all set to go!

The RCA Modem Jack is good up to 56k, which is ok since I don't have internet cable or DSL service in my area. But I'll gladly trade-off mobility for speed any day. Here's why.

My desktop computers (old and new) are in my upstairs bedrooms -- where I can't use them when my family is sleeping. They are also far away from where my family spends most of its time -- and that's downstairs by the TV's.

With the RCA wireless modem jacks, I can now access the internet --- while watching TV with my family; and I can surf the net long after everyone has gone to sleep -- when internet speeds are fastest. The connection is fairly clean (free of static); and the transfer speed is nearly as fast as if I had accessed the phone jack directly.

I've gotten very used to sitting in my favorite chair and surfing the net. When cable or DSL eventually come to my neighborhood, I guess I'll have to set up a wireless network in my home (for a lot more money) -- in order to maintain my mobility.

Until then, I'll use the next best thing -- RCA's Wireless Modem Jacks. They're great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Slow!!
I purchased it on Ebay for 40 bucks and thought I was getting a good deal. My condo doesn't have a phone jack in the spare room so this was better than running a phone line from one room to the next. Unfortunately I haven't been able to connect any faster than 28.8. Yikes!! My place is only 5 years old. Price was right, quality was wrong. I'll stick with the long phone lines.

1-0 out of 5 stars Going to swith to Phonex PX 441
I had the same problems as the other reviewers. It worked great with my Tivo for 6 months and now has a LOT of static, and thus won't get a full cycle with my Tivo now. I'm going to replace it with the Phonex PX 441, which doesn't have any bad reviews here at Amazon and is a little less expensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Track Record
I purchased the cordless phone jack for my DirecTV system, and it worked fine for three months. Then it broke down. I reset the system and it worked great for another two days before breaking down again. I decided I must have gotten a lemon (it happens), and I purchased a new system. The new one lasted all of two weeks. So now I'm running a 25' telephone cord across the living room, and hoping that someday in the near future the bugs will be worked out of this otherwise very handy technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Had the same problems, but figured it out...
I was having all the same frustrations as the other reviewers. I had horrible humming and buzzing - it was quite frustrating. I thought it had something to do with the range, but after playing with it for an hour or so, I discovered that this device *needs* to be plugged directly into your wall jacks to work as intended. If you plug it into a surge protector or UPS (like I had done), you get a bunch of noise and really [bad] connections.

Now that I've plugged both units directly into wall jacks, my FAX machine is now happily working. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars product stopped working after three months
I purchased this unit for my TiVo phone hook up and it only worked for three months. It is not worth the headache!

1-0 out of 5 stars A couple of old misleading reviews
The technical content no longer states that the device supports caller ID, so that review is obsolete.

Note that the tech details also says that the two units are connected by Infrared (not RadioFreq, like a cordless phone, like I'd expect...).

Be sure you can can return this unit! If you need high speed (modem) or caller ID, I'd go for a wired cable (I'm am an engineer... :-(... ).

1-0 out of 5 stars tl96595
this product doesn't work at all? might be a bad one but i've tried to hook it up to several phones in my home plugged in to a standard outlet and it doesn't work. There looks like a green display button would come on if it worked but it doesn't come on either.

2-0 out of 5 stars ONLY worked for my phone.
There is no mention as to how this product works with dial-up. This is because the results may vary. My results? Nada. Zip. I get a dial tone, but nothing more. My phone works, sure. But I can't get on the Internet. I'm going back to my 50' phone cord draped across the living room floor because this puppy is GOING BACK.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for NYC apts - Misleading Claims
We purchased the GE-Instajack believing it would solve our want of jacks problem as it claimed to be as good as regular jack and was caller ID compatible. However, what we found out was that: (a) if you talked longer than 30 seconds (through all the static), the phone would go dead; and (b) after calling the manufacturer complaining about this and the fact that caller ID was not working, were told the claim "caller ID compatible" just meant that a phone with caller ID will operate on the system but the caller ID function will not work --pretty misleading if you ask me. They gave us tips on resetting the units but it never worked for us. Anyway, we took care of the problem by paying the phone company to come out and install a real phone jack... - something we were trying to avoid (and save money) by purchasing the GE Instajack. -Not worth the frustration! ... Amazon.com Review

Satisfied with the telephone sitting on your desk but still wishing for the convenience of a headset telephone? Plantronics lets you have both with its S10 telephone headset system. The device sits between your telephone's base unit and its handset and enables you to do much more than just talk hands-free.

The base unit for the S10 plugs into the handset jack on your telephone, so it will work with any active line of a multiline phone. (Unfortunately, this also prevents it from working with most cordless phones.) Once the base unit is installed and plugged in you can put on the headset and begin answering calls. The headset is great--it is practically weightless, and the microphone is the type that sits beside your mouth instead of extending in front of it. Three ear hooks of varying sizes are included, along with a standard headset band that fits over your head. It is easy to detach the band from the integrated headphone/microphone unit and install an ear hook instead. We preferred the hooks since the unit is so light, and after a few minutes we were able to forget we even had it on. The headphone speaker doesn't press tightly to your ear, so it's possible to wear the headset for hours in complete comfort.

The S10's base unit has a switch that lets you shift between using the headset or the phone's handset, and it also controls the amplifier. There are volume controls for incoming and outgoing audio and a tone control for adjusting the bass and treble of incoming calls. Once everything was adjusted, all of our calls sounded great, and it was difficult to go back to a normal phone that didn't have the handy amplifier adjustments. All headset phones should be so comfortable and easy to use. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Headset is extremely light, especially when ear hooks are used
  • Amplifier controls allow for perfect fine-tuning
  • Unit makes it possible to use your phone's handset if you prefer
Cons:
  • You have to take handset off the hook when answering calls (even if your are using the headset)

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job but...
I have this at work. It does the job okay, but people sometimes have a hard time hearing what I say, even though I have the speaking volume turned all the way up. The other drawback is that you can't switch out headsets with it - you only can use the monoaural headset that comes with it, which isn't so good for noisy environments.

Other than that, I have been using it for over 6 months now and it has been working well enough to keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly for me
I first wanted to respond to a concern about terrible screeching when used in office multi-phone conditions. I can't speak to multiple S10's in the same office but did have a screech on first try to another extension. The amplifier, however, has 7 configuration settings. I found several settings worked for outgoing calls but only two worked for both in office and outgoing use. So if a second headset is bought in my office I'll respond to whether we could find a configuration setting for both headsets that worked. I supposed that just confuses the concern.

The earhook setup is light and I find that I forget I'm wearing it until I run into the cord turning my chair or standing up. It is nice that nothing actually sits inside my ear but rather it rests gently on the outside.

Volume wise: In addition to adjusting the volume and tone of incoming signal it really has power available to broadcast your voice out. There are two ranges available for output as well as a volume in each range. The highest range is too much but it is good to know its there if I ever get someone complaining they can barely hear me (as happened all the time with a previous headset system).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great headset
Easy to set up, great volume controls, and very comfortable. Recommend highly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile but could be better
This hands free kit is versatile. It has many settings that can be adjusted for sound quality including a selector switch to match telephone impedance. What's not shown in the picture is a little wire hook that allows you to hang the headset up off the desk when not in use.

You have the option of using an over-the-head strap or over the ear clip. The problem with the over the ear clip is that you have to remove the earpiece padding to wear it. I stuck with the over-the-head strap because it's more comfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.
It is pricey, but you do get what you pay for in this case. Great clearity and very comfortable. If you need a hands free set for like when you are working on a computer, this is the one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well
This is one of the few headsets that reliably works with a number of different phone, and produces clear sound for both you and the person on the other end of the line. We've tried a number of others that don't work nearly as well. It's comfortable enough to wear for long conversation.

In our house they hold up for about a year or two of constant use before they fail (usually the cord wears out).

3-0 out of 5 stars Just bought my third one of these
This headset is comfortable and works well though it just doesn't last long. It's the only headset that works with my home phone so I keep buying them but they only last about six months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
This product is a nice headset that did fit nicely on my ear (lucky fit I guess) and was easy to work with. It is compact and feels quite natural for me. Not to mention it is designed to work on either ear so in the middle of a conversation you can just change ears.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money!!
DOnt buy and I had tough time in adjusting the ear piece as it falls out every time you hang it over the ear..

4-0 out of 5 stars Jensen Headset
I gave this product 4 out of 5 stars because it does not give a snug fit on my ear, however it does stay in place while talking and working in the kitchen, etc. Those I have spoken with said they cannot tell I'm using a headset. The sound quality was clear from my end as well. I definitely recommend this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect headset!
I don't know about you, but I can't stand all those headsets that have small boom microphones or just earbuds. They either fall off or produce terrible sound.

But this headset is the perfect option. The band goes behind your neck, so no one can really see it. But it keeps the headset perfectly in place. Then the boom comes all the way out in front so the sound is perfect.

I love these and don't know why they are the most popular type of headset. They should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars can't imagine driving without it!
I use this headset regularly while I drive, it sounds clear and keep me from having an accident! I even take it on my trips (flight attendant for Delta Airlines) and use it during my layovers. I also use JTH940 at home with my cordless phone, can't imagine my life without them. ...

I definitely recommend this product. ... Read more
