TDK's CD-R quality is great and will last longer.
I have learned a hard lesson in buying blank CD-R over the years. I first bought the blank aluminum surface cheap no-name CD-R at the computer fair. They were OK; they don't last as long as TDK, but burn well. Only 2-5 bad CD in a bundle of a 100 failed. I decided to upgrade the look of the blank CDR on my next purchase and got Sony. TDK and Yamaha were noticeably expensive. Sony's CDR(smooth pearl surface) are the absolute worst (read my review on for Sony CD-R) the CD will burn, but over time become unreadable and the surface started to fake.

My friend burned me a TDK's CD about 2-3 years ago and the CDR still look like new. So, I decide to give it a try. I read somewhere that TDR surface is a little more scratch proof then the other brands. I have no problem burning any of TDK. I have a Yamaha burner burning between 4-20speed and the TDK 48x has no problem. I have 3 generation of TDK, they all look a like very nice with smooth silver surface and a nice clean design. The surface at time is harder to write on then other cheaper CDR with a dryer marker, but I think it is because of high quality TDK surface. If you want to save a couple of cents per CDR and get cheaper CDR then it won't last as long as a TDK's CDR. Noticeable: Memorex is pretty good, and cheaper. Some HP is very nice with gold surface. Yamaha is TDK quality but pricier, Sony (pearl surface) is crap. Fiji is good and also cheaper. Looking at the surface you can tell which brand model is good. The gold surfaces are the best and pricier then the aluminum/silver surface. You will always get a better deal when you buy a 100-spindle over a 20pack. TDK Supports Their Products
I bought the TDK DVD drive and it was not able to recognize DVD+RW media after writing to the media one time. (DVD+R media worked fine.) This problem had existed since I purchased the drive. I "chatted" with tech support and they agreed that it was a hardware problem with the drive. When I called tech support for an RMA number, they informed me that I was past the warranty period (by a couple of months). I requested they cover the repair anyway as a gesture of goodwill, since the drive had never worked properly. THEY AGREED TO REPAIR THE DRIVE! Now that is what I call great support. Had the drive failed after the warranty period expired, it would not be right for anyone to expect TDK to repair the product. As it is, I feel that TDK has shown incredible integrity and gone above and beyond the call of duty. Hat's off to TDK!

The drive is a solid performer and installs easily. I suggest using Nero with this drive rather than the bundled software.

Horrible Dvd burner, great if you want nothing but COASTERS!
This dvd burner is horrible, I had nothing but problems with it. I bought this thinking it was the best but it fell very short of my expectations after the second burn. Also the software is garbage and you are better off using Dvd shrink (which is free software) and Nero to burn .

Most of the problems being with dvd-r disks. I used the two free dvd+r disk fine but it was downhill after that. I bought a stack of 10 tdk dvd-r (dvd-r runs on all of the dvd players in our house and dvd+r doesn't), it encoded just fine, started to burn for a few minutes and then the burner would freeze up and a error message would pop up on the screen. After a few more coasters, I called TDK and they tried to say it was my computers fault, I informed then my computer was brand new and then they said it was the burner driver that needed to be updated. I updated the driver on their website, yet this still did not fix the problem, I had an even larger stack of coasters by then and said forget it, I will be broke with no movies to speak for it before I get this thing working. I returned it and bought the external 8x Plextor px-708uf and have been happy ever since, and have burned over 50 copies of my movies with no coasters! If you want a burner that gives you nothing but hassle, headaches and a stack of coasters for your drinks by all means waster your money on this. If you want a great dvd burner take a closer look at the Plextor 8x.

Lost a star for bad software
This DVD burner comes with Roxio's Easy CD and DVD Creator software. While the software is very easy to follow, the DVDs I produced were choppy and, most importantly, HAD NO SOUND. I checked with Roxio and indeed they have a fix for the sound problem, but it doesn't work (for me at least). While at the Roxio site I saw many, many complaints about this software.

The burner itself has functioned great and set up easily. I think once I find a usable software program to work with it I'll be very happy with the product.

If you've been waiting to buy...you can stop
I've been watching the price of external DVD writers for over a year. This particular item has dropped from over $400 to a little more than $200 (with a current $30 TDK rebate and careful comparison shopping --not neccesarily via Amazon) during that time. It has many positive points to recommend it, and only a few minor issues.
Strenghts:
(1) The external option is a blessing if you are not comfortable with --or simply don't want to spend the time-- messing around inside your computer. Even though my currrent desktop is homebuilt and I'm fine with working inside the case, both of my IDE controller "master" settings are already dedicated (one to the hard drive, one to an existing CD-RW. The latter is capability I'll want to retain for a while longer).
(2) The presence of both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces adds obvious flexibility to this unit. Since the data transfer rates are nearly the same, this is a matter of personal preference (unless you only have one type available on your computer, of course).
(3) The ability to write in both DVD+RW and DVD-RW formats spares consumers any painful -and possibly regretable-- "vhs vs. beta" type decisions as this market segment matures.
(4) This unit shipped with a surprisingly good printed users manual for both hardware and software operation.
(5) Worked great first time out of the box. Extensive data backups of up to 4.7 GB on a single DVD....how cool is that!
Nitpicks:
(1) The CD drawer operation is a little on the noisy side.
(2) Personal preference issue: The included burning software is Roxio's EZ CD Creator. I prefer Ahead Software's Nero package based on a couple years of experience with both. Your mileage and user experience may vary, of course. ... Read more

BAD , BAD, BAD, the worst you can get !!!!
UNfortunatly, sometimes we end up chosing pruducts based on brand names. This is waht happened to me. I saw this on sale... and bought 1 spindle. got another one at the marktplace, and since this pice of trash got on sale on best buy for 19 00 I ended up buying 1 pack over there also. My first spindle arrived at my house and for my surprise, For the first time I had a lost media on MY DELL DVD burner.... tried to burn 6 diferents stuff... and always got errror messegae on the midle. USed the cheap media TEON to burn same stuff, with no problem at all... I am returnig all 3 spindle back, and this is the last tima I will use TDK media.No wonder... everybody is selling this trash so cheap... you get what you pay!!!! ... Read more

Nice player, better if it wasn't crippled
short version is that this is a nice mp3 player. Expansion slot for SD, solid construction (battery cover is a bit flimsy though) battery life is long. etc. etc.
Biggest drawback that negates all of the above is that they DRM crippled the little thing. It was so nice up until you find out you have to use TDK's proprietory UniFi software. Which unifies nothing. It "allows" you to copy mp3s from you system to it. And then they are dead. You can't copy them back, you can't transfer them to anything else. And here's the best part, Windows does not recognize the device unless you install the software.
It is all the software as well, if you merely remove the SD card you can move and copy MP3s to it via a reader and the mojo plays them fine. But obviously this doesn't work for the main flash memory. And you need the software to make it work... so unless someone reverse engineers the program, don't buy this.

features that the other's don't
the bottom line on this player is that it has two features that most players in this price range do not:

1. expandable memory. by ading a 512M mmc / sd card, you can bring the total memory up to 768M. no players in this price range are expandable. in fact, i don't see that any newly produced players are expandable.

2. fm radio. a few other models have this, like the creative rhomba. but they dropped this feature on their new models. sometimes i simply get tired of listening to music and want to hear the news. it is very nice (indepensible for me) to have this option. the radio is quite usable.

the user interface, ergonomics are adequate. i think most mp3 players have a nice user interface so this isn't really a selling point. it has a nice display and lots of options on the player.

complaints ...

the players seems to be of pretty high quality, except as the buttons feel cheap. i wonder about the life span of these.

the unit comes w/ a case, wrist strap, and belt loop. that's great, but for me, i use this exercising so i'm never going to hold it in my hand. also, most workout clothing does not have a belt, so the belt loop is useless in this regard. i wish it would have had a belt CLIP or better yet, an armstrap.

the battery life is quoted at 12 hours. for a mix of about 40% radio and 60% mp3, it looks like i'll get around 8-10 hours life. i expected this though, it's typical to overrate battery life.

Great for the 1 day it lasted
I was quite excited when my Mojo 256 arrived. Had no trouble loading it up with music via the TDK Unifi app or via RealOne Player. Controls are simple to figure out, and the buttons are easy to control by "feel" without having to look at them. Sound quality was great, I liked the "lock" feature for jogging around the neighborhood. However, after 1 day of use, the unit locked up right after I used the RealOne Player's "Format internal memory" feature on the unit and then loaded some songs onto it. It really looked as though the RealOne player had somehow erased the firmware on the unit, as it became completely unresponsive via USB or the LCD; the unit displayed only the battery life indicator, and could only be powered off by taking out the battery. TDK tech support told me that this is impossible as the firmware is on its own ROM chip. In any case, I'm exchanging the defective unit through Amazon with no problem. I have high hopes that the replacement will work fine, as it's a very nice player for the price.

Live fast die young
Looks nice, light, incredibly small, great features, unfortunately mine only lasted 6 days. Completely stopped working, fortunately J&R took it back with no hassle.

not compatible with some programs!
I read the reviews for this and after much comparison shopping, I decided this was the way to go. The only program that you can transfer songs to the mojo with is the Unifi program that comes with it. It does NOT work with Windows Media or Real Player, or the Moodlogic it comes with. Unifi kept freezing and causing me to reformat the mojo. I've had two different Mojos in the past week and experienced the same problem with both of them. TDK Support couldn't figure out the problem, so I figure it must be something on my system....not that I have anything weird on it.

When I was able to get a few songs on it, at first they sounded great, then it started making this chirping sound every once in a while. I don't know what my problem has been with this thing, I really wish it would have worked for me. ... Read more

Buy at your own risk
The TDK portion of this may work OK, I don't know, because the software that comes with it, ArcSoft ShowBiz, is some of the worst software I have ever encounterd, doesn't work. I have a 6 month old almost top of the line dell, so I meet all the requiremets. The sofware crashed my computer every time! I would have to manually re-boot! I have been to ArcSofts' web site, and they no longer sell the version that comes with the indicapture, but they will sell you the upgraded version for 50 bucks!

I eded up purchasing Screenblast software made by Sony. It works great!!! It is so intuitive that I was able to make a DVD without even reading the instructions. Indicapture seems like a good idea, but until the software gets an upgrade, I would steer clear of this one, folks!

If only I knew where I could unload this turkey.....

Works Like A Charm
I was skeptical after reading a negative review here, but noticed that almost every analog to DV converter invariably gets disgruntled feedback. I decided to trust the TDK reputation and appreciated the product descriptions on their own website. This device works much better than I anticipated and delivers terrific quality that doesn't take up much space on a hard drive. I'm very pleased with this purchase and the bundled software from ArcSoft also seems terrific. I'm glad I made a good choice as TDK knows what they're doing. I had one minor question about a driver and their telephone tech support was helpful.

First off let me say after totaly exhausting tdk tech Support the product still dosn't work. My computer in which greatly exceeds all Requirements for the unit still dosn't reconize it. tdk finally said that it simply didn't work with some computers. So buy at your on risk but what ever you do don't get it though office depot on this site first they fill your oder though tech depot which dosn't take returns on this product. usable, but overpriced
This type of player is absolute must for me, as I put a lot of miles on my bike on weekends. I want music to last for hours and don't want any wires. I used Now Evolution 32MB similar to this player, loved it with exception of limited storage. I tried to purchase Now Evolution NP256, but couldn't find it anywhere! Mojo 1 is the only other option available, which I was reluctant to go for, but had no choice. I was disappointed, when after several attempts to copy my MP3 file directly to internal memory, I realized that I have to use MoodLogic software (supplied) to transfer files, which encrypts them. What a hastle!
External memory is OK for direct coping.

dashed hopes
I had such high hopes but this baby is going back. It is a very tempting item for the obvious reasons but here is the lowdown:

- As headphones go, it is heavy, *very* uncomfortable and poorly built.
- The entire product screams " I was built in China!"; plastic has rough edges, the controls are clunky (you move 5 notches if you only want to move one, etc.)
- the transfer software only works for 100 songs and it's three-o for the "full" product; free plug-in did not recognize the player after 45 minutes. I was unable to transfer files and I write software for a living.

-- As I said, the headphone aren't comfortable (and I love back-of-the-head ones in general) so unless you'd buy a pair of nice lambskin gloves that are two sizes small just because they look nice...

Stay away, you have been warned.

not bad
The little unit works pretty well.

A couple of things they don't tell you...

1. Although the device looks like a standard usb storage device when connected via the USB, you apparently cannot copy mp3 files directly to the device's memory. They have to be "encrypted" using the supplied cheezy moodlogic software. Music files cannot apparently be copied from the device to your PC. Big brother again I guess. This does not seem to hold true with the mmc/sd card slot.

2. For decent FM reception you must use a small 2.5" supplied FM antenna that is screwed into a threaded slot on the left earpiece. On my unit it's in a matching grey color and stays reasonably flush in the direction of the headband.

The unit shoulds good and is indeed quite wirefree. Records FM to internal memory, which is a neat feature.

Want it in Europe, why not available?
Like the first reviewer above, I get tangled in cords or break them. I also think it makes more sense to build the mp3 player into the headphones.

This well-conceived product is, for some reason, not being sold anywhere in Europe, but that's probably TDK's marketing decision. No problem with that.

My question is why can't Amazon ship it to Europe? Most things they can! It doesn't run on household power, just standard batteries -- it will work just fine around the world. So what's Amazon's problem shipping it? Very very frustrated.

Is this a legal problem, a political one, or just plain orneriness? Can I ask Amazon uk to order it for me?

Could someone at Amazon please respond directly to me on this?

And preferably with a way to order one.

Great idea
When I kept getting all tangled up in the headphone cables of my DiscMan while I was exercising, the sudden thought occurred to me: What about an MP3 player built into a set of headphones?! Is there such a thing? After a search, I was surprised to find that this was just about the only one available.

Thank goodness it's a good product. It can hold about 2 hours of music, and the battery seems to last the full 10 hours claimed (although I would recommend getting a couple rechargable AAA batteries and a charger). The sound quality from the speakers is nice, and the behind-the-neck style of headphones is comfortable, even when on a treadmill. The FM receiver is a nice bonus as well.

Even with all of the functionality built into the tiny areas behind the headphone speakers, TDK has still managed to cram a lot of good stuff in there. Four play-order functions (normal, repeat 1, repeat all, random) and even four DSP settings (normal, rock, jazz, classic) are included, along with an additional audio out port, for plugging another set of headphones in, or exporting the sound to another device. Very cool, and very complete.

If I had a complaint to make, it would be with the software. The MoodLogic software bundled with the Mojo 1 is a demo version, and only "activates" 100 songs -- meaning you have to buy the full version to activate your whole library. Songs can also be transferred using a plug-in for MusicMatch, which is a simple drag-and-drop process, and much easier to use.

Support for the product on the TDK site is still really weak, with no FAQs or download areas, but we can hope that they will implement those areas on their website soon.

This was the perfect solution to my tangled-wires woes during my workout, and a really decent product to boot. I would recommend it. ... Read more

THE ULTIMATE DVD-R.
I don't know how they did it, but TDK has made one hell of a durable product here. I tried to scratch it with my fingernail... nothing. I tried rubbing it HARD on my carpet... nothing. I tried skidding across my linoleum kitchen floor... nothing. I tried scraping it with a sharp metal nail... OK this time I scratched it. Bottom line, unless you're actively trying to destroy it, it won't give in! And of course you'll be handling it carefully anyway, so under normal use it'll be fine. Got smudge? Wipe it with your shirt!

This DVD-R is totally compatible with my Sony RDR-GX7 DVD recorder and plays back in a variety of players; I've played it in my RCA, Panasonic, Sony, and PC. This is the only serious choice for archiving. Why risk your memories with a disc that'll scratch when you look at it the wrong way? Get TDK's Armor Plated and you'll never regret it. ... Read more
