5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome and easy
I have to say, I was a little concerned about this product after reading about some of the difficulties other buyers have experienced. I was also a bit nervous about installing it myself, since I am not what you would call a computer expert.

From Day One after installing it, though, I have been impressed. It gets fantastic range throughout my entire house, even through walls and heavy, metal objects. Signal strength on my computers is almost always between 90-100%, and has NEVER dipped below 73%.

As for the network installation itself, it was easy and took a total of about an hour (and that includes installation and configuration of wireless cards on 2 computers).

And you can't beat the price on this thing. I highly recommend this and other Netgear wireless network products.

1-0 out of 5 stars do not buy

5-0 out of 5 stars Gigabit made simple
This switch is exactly what I expected it to be: solid. Just like the other Netgear equipment I've used, the GS108 is completely hassle-free. My whole house was literally wired for gigabit Ethernet in no more time than it took to plug in the cables. I took it out of the box, plugged in the power cord, and plugged in connections (including a router and the patch cables to the rooms in my home), and went about my networking. It's completely idiot-proof, since all 8 ports automatically detect connection speed and uplink/downlink (meaning that no special cables are needed to hook up additional switches or routers). Plus, the indicator lights show which ports are in use, and at what speeds (10Mb, 100Mb, or 1Gb).

The form factor is great, too: At about 9 inches wide by 4 inches deep by 1 inch thick, it's small enough that I was easily able to place it inside the structured wiring panel, and so light that a little heavy velcro holds it fast. Plus, it doesn't put out a lot of heat; even with the door to the panel closed, it feels warm but never hot to the touch. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inefficient power supply
Switch is fine, but power supply is the least efficient I've ever seen, producing 6 watts out with 23 watts in. There's no excuse for 26% power supply efficiency, when an 80% efficient design costs nearly the same. This power supply will add about $3/month to your electric bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value, great switch
This is a great switch, I use it to share my ADSL, it was just plug an play, no fuss, in three minutes I was running three computers, its also very compact and nice looking, the silver finish is better looking than Lynksys and Dlink. Well worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Their products have no warranty
Contrary to their claims, their products have no warranty at all (unless you pay for it). I have a 2 year old gateway router that had a 5 year warranty that stopped working one day so I called their tech support. The tech support person told me that since the product is over 90 days old and they do not manufacture it anymore, then I would have to contact their pay tech support line to get an RMA. If they are able to fix the problem over the phone line, then they will charge me, otherwise they will offer me an RMA number for a return. So basically you have to pay to use their warranty. A friend who is a lawyer is currently handling this situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Switch
Its a basic but reliable, non-managed switch. Great when you need a simple solution with a good brand name.

5-0 out of 5 stars works well, runs a little warm
This switch is as advertised. It works out of the box, without any problems, setups, uplink switches, or anything else. Just plug and play.

Silent, fan-less operation. However, it does get a bit warm to the touch. If fully loaded (using all ports at high volumes of traffic) and running in warmer room, overheating may become an issue. Even so, I'll take that possibility over yet another noisy fan in my office. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Cost, Works Well
I wanted to upgrade my home network from a 10M/sec hub built into my router to a 100M/sec switch. I probably could have gotten by with an 8 port product, but I've wired up a few outlets to a patch panel and didn't want to have to walk to the basement and patch around as I moved around the house. This 16 port version seemed like a good way to go.

The product is very different styling than other Netgear products I have (not that I cared). It is small, not a much larger profile than the plugs themselves need, and the case is very sturdy and solid. With no fans, it makes no noise. My only negative comment is I would have preferred a standard 19 inch width for rack mounting, but others will prefer this more condense case. Fits on a shelf easy, or you could mount it to the wall with screws on the underside.

And the end result -- much faster home network! This would be a good solution for anyone with a larger home or small office wired network, or someone who hosts LAN parties. 16 ports will connect a lot of people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic network switch
I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down. Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.

This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*. It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.

... EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.

I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).

Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now. It functions just as a switch should: without a thought. It just works.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sleek, but problems in a busy environment
As others say, the device is small and easy on the eyes. I express caution with regard to critical purposes such as servers and IP telephony; we have experienced some weird problems with this. We have three (Netgear FS608 v2) in two locations; two connected to a 24 port Dell switch and the third I think connects to a Cisco 3524. They may intermittently refuse to forward frames from just one source to just one destination while allowing frames from that same source to other destination, weird stuff like that. Reset takes a power cycle OR just unplug the uplink cable and reconnect. It's a real nuisance if it means you have to drive to work on a weekend or an IP telephone call goes "blip" into la-la land. I'm sure they have a limitation on the size of the MAC address cache but I have not so far researched it. Beware using little switches on big networks! (That sounds like a grade b movie title!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This replaced my 4-port Netgear Hub. Fast, great looking; it now matches my silver computer. My only problem is that now the cables are in the back, and the weight of them tends to pull the switch backwards and nearly off the desk. No big deal though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works flawlessy
I've had it for a month. It does what it should. No problems easy to set up. What I like is the tiny size compare to the previous generation of switches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stylish AND Easy to Use
What can I say, this is one stylish switch! Looks sweet. I purchased it for LAN parties at my house and I have to say that I am not the least bit disappointed. The unit itself is very handsome and very well built. Truly plug and play with newer OS's like Windows 2000 and Windows XP...no software setup required whatsoever. When I use it, I usually have 4 computers hooked up to it (there are a total of 8 ports, so 8 computers for LAN only, 7 for LAN + Net) and then one of the ports acts as the uplink/downlink to my SMC Barricade via a 100 ft. CAT 5e cable and then the SMC Barricade connects to my RCA Cable modem. Again, nothing to set at all! Very easy to use. No problems when gaming for hours on end :) The box also includes a VERY nice standing bracket which actually works! Wow, first time I've gotten a standing bracket that actually HOLDS the hardware in a vertical position stably. This switch is highly recommended for those of you who want a stylish, easy to use, well built, well designed, and truly plug and play switch. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Switch! But runs HOTTT!
Features 8 ports of 10/100 Full-duplex ability. It comes in very durable metal casing and feels somewhat heavy. It is truly plug and play. Compared to my generic (TrendNet 5-port 10/100 full-duplex switch) it blows it out of the water. I get better pings across my home network and when loaded with 7 computers transfering files at 100mBits full-duplex it shines! The only con is that it runs HOT! Be sure to place it where it can breathe and not next to anything heat-sensitive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Netgear's FS-108: a 1st class switch at a fantastic value
This 10/100 megabit switch is great if you are starting to feel the squeeze of a 10 megabit network. If you're like me, it getting pretty old moving huge scanned pictures and other large files around the home LAN. At 10 megabits, it typically took me 20-30 minutes to get a CDR worth of scanned images over to my CDR writing machine for backup. Well, not any more!

Since I hooked up my FS-108, I can move a CDR worth of images or MP3 files (650 megs worth) in about 3-4 minutes instead of that 20-30.

This switch is a piece of art. Built like a tank, incredibly solid and small for what it does. No fan, so it makes no noise whatsoever. The switch hooked up painlessly and worked flawlessly from the get-go.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's good, but pls get 2A power supply instead
I purchased this switch 3 years ago
happy with it, however, the supplied power adaptor seems not to provide enough current, it runs hot
it seems to have more current power adaptor to run (at least 2A, do not use the supplied adaptor)
now I install it vertically on the wall, just warm to touch (just use 3 out of 8)
for more stable operation, a stronger power supply is recommended (at least 12-15V 2A)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and solid performance
An incredible product, currently running on a home linux network, works great and stays up and working for long, even for burning CD-ROMs through NFS... Great product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why buy Netgear over Linksys?
...I ordered a Netgear FS-108 which worked perfectly out of the box and has continued to work without one single hitch ... I'm about ready to buy another Netgear unit and the warranty ... is five years on the Netgear versus one on Linksys. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Netgear FS-105 Port 10/100 autosensing switch simplifies 100 MBps switching technology for the small-office marketplace. This product provide a way to instantaneously boost network performance while preserving your network infrastructure, including installed cabling and desktop software and hardware.

All five ports automatically sense speed, installation is Plug and Play, and each connection can easily be upgraded from 10 to 100 Mbps. Each port provides dedicated 10 or 100 Mbps bandwidth for connecting PCs, servers, and hubs. In full duplex mode, each port supports up to 200 Mbps of throughput.

The switch supports n-way autonegotiation, and each port automatically senses and operates at the proper duplex mode while built-in LEDs clearly indicate port status. These features take the burdens of configuration, installation, and troubleshooting off the user.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast router, flexible, design is a bit uncomfortable for me.
I originally had a hub, and when I realized that I wasn't getting anywhere near the throughput I would get with a switch, the obvious choice was netgear. the switch is fast, slick looking, and has LED's to tell you everything about your connections. the downside? design. the ethernet cables plug into the front of the unit, while the power cord plugs into the back. the problem here is that if your ethernet cables are as flexible as warm butter, they get in the way of the led's or each other. when i plugged three cables in, the box sat to the side because the weight of the cable held up up. if you are going to wall mount the unit (it comes with screws to do so) then that might help, but if you are going to set it on your desk, the ethernet cables have to run from the front of it, instead of behind... the unit also gets warm, so make sure you have clearance on all sides so it gets air. otherwise, despite the design issues, the product is slick. has led for 10/100mb, full duplex, collisions, and the 5th port doubles as an uplink.... for fast networking netgear makes a quality product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good, solid switch. A little nicer than others.
With switch prices coming down to about $10-per-port, it's hard to justify buying anything less than a 10/100-switch for all but the most cost-conscious buyer.

As most 5-port 10/100 switches have the same capabilities and cost about the same, there's not much to distinguish one from another. Still, I particularly like the Netgear FS-105 5-port switch. Like other products from Netgear, this switch is a little nicer than the competition because it has:

- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic. The case also has a grounding tab in case you're using the switch in a (electrically) high-noise environment.

- Connection status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active. (The "vistajack" feature.)

- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.

- An easy-to-access switch to toggle port 1 between station mode and uplink mode. Unlike some hubs where two jacks are wired together, this design prevents accidentally shorting a station to an uplink.

- Screw-mount notches on the underside allows for easy attachment to the wall, underside of a counter, etc.

With a 1000-MAC address buffer and 200 Kbytes-per-port packet buffer, this switch can easily handle the typical traffic load of small- and medium-sized networks.

The Netgear product is not the cheapest 10/100-switch (check out the D-Link Fast Ethernet Switch, for example), but for overall design and value-for-money, I still like the Netgear the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars I wish the ports were on the back
I agree with the other reviewers, in that this is a very solid built and reliable product. I've been using mine for six months now and have not had to touch it. It performs very well, as I've ran multiple file transfers simultaneously among four computers and it was amazingly faster than when using an older 10/100 hub.

The one complaint that I have about Netgear switches and routers is that many of them have the ports on the front of the unit instead of the back. If you're installing this in some out-of-the-way place like your attic or basement, or if you're installing in a computer rack where you want everything facing front, this is a non-issue. If you want to put this on your desktop it is a major inconvenience, because the cables coming into the switch will either be strung across the front of your desk, or will snake over and behind the unit. In either case, you have cables on your desktop and it's quite unsightly.

All things considered I'm still happy with the Netgear switch, but if I had it to do over again I would have probably bought one that worked better in my home office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable switch
Sturdy construction in an unobstrusive yet eye-catching package, the FS105 is an excellent workhorse! I have been using one for the past 1 1/2 years without a hitch. Setup is easy and quick so there is very little hassle and headaches involved.

Only one problem is that it tends to run rather warm so I elevate the switch on 2 jenga blocks to allow for better heat dissipation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Device, Small Size is a +
I'm not hiding that I like Netgear products for entry level use. This device has a 5th port that you can use in uplink or normal mode. It is very compact with indicator lights for connection and collisions. It is also very reliable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great but runs hot
NetGear FS308 is very nicely designed, just right for my network, where it did its work reliably for 2 years. However, the unit ran somewhat hot, and despite ample air circulation (it was on a wire shelf) the heat must have aged it prematurely. It seriously malfunctioned yesterday, overheating so much that it was dangerous to touch. Unfortunately, cooling off did not restore it to health, but at least it is still under warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice solid switch
I've had the FS308 for about a year now, and it has been running great. All the rooms in my house are networked together at a central point using this switch. It is more expensive than most switches, but this is a high quality unit. Some features I love are the lights on front and back, an internal powersupply (no huge power adapter to plug in), and a solid case. The FS308 has worked flawlessly for me, and it's fast. I've done benchmarks on it - and it's slightly faster, and can handle heavy traffic better, than my other 5 port Linksys switch.
For the most part, a switch is a switch. This unit costs twice as much as other 8 port switches. But if you like having the best - this is the one to get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 8 port fast ethernet switch for home/small office
There is really not much to say about this product, other than it works great. I once read a review by Jerry Pournelle where he raved about a new hub he got -- he just plugged it in and it worked (my take -- what kind of hubs was he used to?). Well, that is what you should expect from any hub or switch and this no exception.

I have always been satisfied with Netgear equipment and this piece of equipment supports my opinion. It is solidly constructed and in a tough metal case. There are activity & link status lights on the front, and the power and cables go in the back.

Oh yeah, unlike some network equipment, this has no fan. It is silent. ... Read more
