4-0 out of 5 stars Nice little wireless router
I'm not sure if the other reviewers have problems reading instructions or if they just skipped steps. Had no problems at all getting this unit set up and establishing connections between my desktop and Inspiron 5150. Take it out of the box, connect an ethernet cable between the desktop and router and plug it in. Use your favourite browser to connect to 198.168.1.1 and run through the setup wizard. Then once you've got everything set up, read through the manual, go through the various setup options and tweak as desired. I opted to go with the WPA-PSK authentication protocol because its supposed to be more secure, but if you have other devices that don't support it, you'll probably have to stick with WEP.

It can be laid flat on the desk, or propped up on end vertically using the little rubber feet that are supplied. There are 4 ethernet ports that allow you to connect via 10/100 Ethernet and the WAN port to connect to cable, DSL or LAN. The antenna is on a swivel and can be rotated to just about any convenient orientation.

The only thing I don't like about the router is that it doesn't have an internal clock, so every time it is powered off the router's system time goes back to it's default start value. It can be configured to set the time from an NTP server, but only if it's connected to a WAN network (via DSL, cable or LAN). It's only a minor inconvenience though. The other thing is that the router's web interface only seems to work properly if you use IE. Using Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox sort of works for most things, but not everything.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hope you're patient
Either I'm stupid or the reviewers who found this thing easy to set up are just lucky. I fought with this thing for several hours and two calls to customer service. Both useless, by the way. The instructions are beyond horrible. They're inadequate clues at best. The encryption process is cruel. You have to do it in the proper order - I believe the base computer you're using for set up and then the your wireless computer. No mention of the order in the directions. Learned by trial and error. Do it backwards and you lose your connection. No instructions for the event you just want to set up your wireless computer without a base 'setup' computer. Having never done encryption I didn't realize that I supply the encryption code. Finally figured that out. Possibly the others out there are just as bad. Now that I've got it set up, it generally works fine. I also set up a d-link wireless printer adaptor. Equally frustrating and directions better but left out one very important fact.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy router doesnt work with IBM Thinkpad
I hate this router already before reading the feedbacks here. If a router wont work with so many devices, it is basically junk. I have used both Microsoft(I know we are against MS) but the router never gave me any problems with any devices, "firmware" also was great. This stupid thing restarts every time I add a MAC address to the filter list. I sneeze and it restarts.
In short, I HATE IT!!!
Go for the little more expensive Netgear or grrr... Microsoft and you will get your money's worth and professionalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beats Linksys any day!
I am happily sitting in my back yard typing up this review on my new D-Link wireless router, which took me less than a half hour to set up and get running with all three of my laptops (including using WEP security).

Previously I had a Linksys router, which was a living nightmare! It constantly dropped the signal and had to be reset, it stopped working altogether one day, then after two hours on the phone with Linksys tech support, I was able to get the Ethernet ports working again - but not the wireless. I've commiserated with many others who've had nothing but trouble with their Linksys products.

On top of being easier to set up, the signal from the D-Link router is much stronger throughout my house than the Linksys ever was. I couldn't be happier! :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Total POS
The unit was simple to install and I was on-line on the internet in minutes with NO hassles. HOWEVER... it will NOT connect to HP iPaq devices at ALL. All it will do is show the router as Available, but will NOT, EVER connect. Just ask: If you Google the DI-524 and iPaq 4155, you can see more information. The tech support guy actually said that his best suggestion would be to return the router. I unplugged it, popped my Netgear 802.11b back in and voila, I was back on-line with NO problems.

I'd avoid D-Links products. I have a PCMCIA card arriving tomorrow which I'm returning without even opening the box.

What a bunch of low-budget crap! Go with Netgear or Linksys, you'll never be sorry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I will have to return this for the third time soon...
The very first one of these I got was the new fan-less design. It worked great for about a year but then it fried one of its ports AND took out my 3Com network card at the same time. :-(

I called and D-Link replaced the switch for free (but of course wouldn't even send me one of their 10/100 cards to replace the 3Com), but the replacement I got is one of the older "with fan" units.

The problem? The fan is now making a horrible noise/rattle but has not actually failed as of yet, so I doubt D-Link would replace it again until the fan actually died...

Bottom line - great product, reliability is a bit suspect, though, and I'm a bit unhappy they replaced my newer unit with a refurbed "Rev. A" unit...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what you are looking for
No doubt a great and simple piece of electronics. I consider my self a technology-saavy but I just got started with the world of HomeLans. Not knowing much, made me shop for quite a while for the best featured, great pricing device. I was quite eager to receive the D-Link DSS-5+ and it was quite easy to put it to work. In less than 10 minutes I had my network up and running. Great features like 5/port connectivity, auto speed sensing, uplink port, and low price make this a must for every home lan, even if you buy it by mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, simple but reliable
I have had this equipment for a year now. In the past 11 months I have used it at my home network with an ISDN connection, but last month we upgraded to ADSL and the result is even better.
My home is in Guatemala City and on this small country we have plenty of communication technology that makes this kind of services posible.
Again, is the best equipment your money can buy, zero problems. I really recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweetest little switch!
I have been replacing my ethernet hubs with switches (because the throughput on a switch is much better than on a hub). After extensive review, I decided to get one D-Link 5-port switch and one Netgear 5-port switch, both auto-sensing for 10/100 rate. The truth is, they both work great! They both perform well, and were equally easy to hookup (no software to deal with). I will add one thing, and that is that the D-Link box was a much nicer design than the Netgear. First of all, it is much smaller (the picture of the D-Link here is deceiving). Secondly, the Netgear has the LED lights and the ethernet ports on the same side. For my setup, I prefer the ports on the back and the lights on the front. I think the Netgear switch was fashioned more for a rack. Style aside, a big thumbs up for both of these switches!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing bad to say about it...
This device arrived as a replacement for my 10bT hub. The process of actually replacing it was just as easy. I'm now getting the performance that I was seeking for my network...and at a great price! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Low Cost Switch
I love this switch. I purchased it when it cost much more than this, but I would still pay the price I paid then for it. My network went from slow to fast in about 5 minutes. I had a game party with 10 other people and a Linksys switch cascaded off of this onw and we had zero lag, and had a blast. (Playing QIII, Codename: Eagle, Need for Speed: Porsche) At the price it is now, I'm seriously considering buying another one. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars D-Link and Switches are like Peanut Butter and Jelly
When I thought of expanding my network to more that the current number of computers I have I naturally thought of D-Link for a quality switch. I chose the DSS-8+ because it is relatively inexpensive, small, and has 8 ports.

After purchasing this I found that it is actually faster than and older 5-Port switch I currently own and operate from D-Link. You don't see this very often. They are both 10/100Base-T Switches, but for some reason I get faster transmission times with the 8-Port.

There is nothing to installing a Switch, and as with any other switch there were no problems. As you probably know by now, I fully endorse D-Link and all their quality networking products.

3-0 out of 5 stars Loud!
I purchased this switch two years ago. It works perfectly except for the noise. The fan is amazingly loud. I am currently looking for a switch to replace it just because of the noise.

I see from some of the other reviews that this model has been replaced with one that doesn't have a fan. Make sure you get that one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Owned for past 6 Months - Still Working - No Problems
I bought his about 6 months ago, and it sure wasn't [the price] it is now... But I made sure then that i got one without a fan. It is much quieter, and with no moving parts i am sure it wont go bad ever.

The only thing that will make me replace this is when the standard is 1000MB/s instaed of the 100MB now. But that wont be much longer.

Highly Recommended

2-0 out of 5 stars Died after two years. Worked great for two years though.
I picked up this switch about two years ago. The internal fan stopped moving after about six months but a few blasts with an air can fixed that. It does have serious overheating issues. So after two years of being on 24/7 it finally died on me. All the LEDs were on steady and it wasn't passing any traffic.

It performed well for the two years it was in service. It's a great switch to have laying around as a spare, but definitely not for mission critical or long term use. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fast, but prone to fail
I picked up a DSS 16+ switch and it definitely improved our network of 14 computers. We were using the two uplinks. I purchased the system in January and it has a 3 year warranty.

Yesterday, it died completely. We lost all our ports. You cannot get through D-Link tech support by phone, and e-mail has been slow to get an RMA.

In retrospect, I think the slightly more expensive Link-Sys switches may be manufactured with better quality control.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not outstanding, then problems!
We had this switch for about a year. It worked well, but was not exceptional. This week, two of our workstations couldn't connect to the server. The problem turned out to be that several ports on the switch had gone bad. I've uplinked a spare hub to the DSS-16+ and things are working fine for now. I plan do some research and get a more reliable switch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once Again D-Link Delivers
I previously owned 2 D-Link hubs and they worked great and are still in good shape, but they are Hubs. That is why I bought this 16 port Switch. And now my Small Office Network is much faster. (As would any network that traded in a hub for a switch.)

I have owned this for 3 months now and everything still works perfect. I have never traced a problem in my network down to this switch. Ever since we purchased it nobody in the office has complained about the speed being to slow.

I have and will recommend this product to any and everyone who could use this or other D-Link switches.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend D-Link's DSS-16+ Switch.
I purchased the DSS-16+ to replace 3 hubs I was using for my small office network. After connecting the switch, I couldn't believe how fast my network operated. I gained dedicated bandwith per port and no longer had to share my bandwith with other users. The DSS-16+ has full-duplexing to provide maximum speeds for 10/100 network cards. D-Link provides lifetime warranty so I know I can't go wrong. I question the problems the other guy experienced because this switch alleviated all of my network traffic and gave me the fast performance I seeked. I would definitely recommend the DSS-16+ to my family and friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor product / technical support is even worse
If you are looking for a reliable, quality switch, look elsewhere. The first switch we received was DOA. Tech support turn around was more than a week, and they ship UPS ground. As a result, we had to rely on an old hub for over two weeks! The new switch worked well, for about two weeks. Then it too failed. If you need a reliable workgroup switch, look somewhere else. We gave up and replaced ours with a Bay Networks Netgear FS516 switch for about the same money and we can rest easy with good support. So far it hasn't broken either. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Switch.
This switch works great and performs great too. It is nice and quiet. This one replaced another Dlink I have used for 3 years- non stop. The reason is the old Dlink fan is loud and the new Dlink has no fan. You may wonder if it gets hot. No, it may get warm but never hot. About the same as the Dlink with the fan. Dlink has definitely improved this switch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Switch plus 2 free NIC cards.
This switch works great. Since they took the fan out and put in a big heatsink, I like how quiet this switch is. It performs good and never gets hot, even under heavy usage. Plus, I like the metal case as opposed to a plastic case. My hats off to Dlink on this improved switch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Switch
I have two years with this and the 36 ports version of this switchs and both work very well, the people at the nerwork don't need to know what is they NIC speed to connect to the network and is very usefull if you have a mixed speed clients, because you don't need one network for 10 Mbits and other for 100 Mbits. Amazon.com Product Description

The D-Link DSS-24 is a powerful rack-mountable dual-speed 24-port10/100Mb Ethernet/Fast Ethernet n-way auto-negotiating switch. It functionallyeliminates unnecessary traffic and relieves data congestion by deliveringdedicated bandwidth for each of the 24 ports. An individual port can connect toeither an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet device, and n-way auto-negotiationautomatically determines the transmission speed of the attached device on eachport.

Providing dynamic buffer allocation, the DSS-24 employs network load balancingfor faster data handling. It uses fast store-and-forward architecture to ensurelow latency and high data integrity, and supports stacking through the MDI-IIshared uplink port for flexible media connection and expansion capabilities.

In this bundle, the DSS-24 switch comes with 10 free DFE-530TX+ Wakeup-on-LANnetwork interface cards (NICs). The DFE-530TX+ card is an Ethernet adapter forPCs, high-end workstations, and workgroup file servers. Realtek's RTL8139Asingle-chip Fast Ethernet controller uses the bus master burst mode to directlytransfer data between the card and the host computer's memory. This spares thehost's workload by bypassing its CPU. Eliminating network bottlenecks, this PCIadapter also works with videographic or multimedia stations.

The NIC comes with easy-to-use plug-and-play installation. The software supportsWindows for Workgroups; Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0; LanMan; Novell; and Linux.

D-Link offers a lifetime warranty for both the DSS-24 router and the DFE-530TX+cards. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The D-Link DSH-5 is a dual-speed, five-port, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet/Fast Ethernet hub with a built-in segment switch. It combines the functions of a Fast Ethernet hub, an Ethernet hub, and a 10/100 Mbps switch in a single physical unit. The DSH-5 gives small offices and home offices maximum flexibility, scalability, resiliency, bandwidth management, and central traffic control by providing an economical migration path to faster technology in one box.

The DSH-5 gives users a smooth way to move to higher performance networking by allowing users to connect Ethernet or Fast Ethernet nodes into any available port. Transmission speed of the attached device is automatically determined through the implementation of n-way autonegotiation on each port, creating independent 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps segments. The built-in segment switch enables the independent Ethernet and Fast Ethernet segments to talk to each other without an additional switching device. The switched segments seamlessly bridge the two technologies to ensure that data from either segment will not overflow to the other segment with unnecessary traffic or collisions.

The DSH-5 provides true out-of-the-box integration to any existing LAN, and simple configuration-free creation of a new one. With a palm-sized footprint, the DSH-5 can be easily mounted to a wall or placed on a desk. Diagnostic LEDs on the front panel make network problem diagnosis simple, and the included manual provides simple troubleshooting tips. The DSH-5 comes complete with free technical support and a lifetime warranty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Hub for a SOHO Network
I bought one of these in May 2001, plugged it in, and it's worked great since then. I am confused by complaints from others about fan noise, because mine does not have a fan! Perhaps those were an older version? Mine is Model DSH-5, Serial BF121581001939, Version D1.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Noisy
This unit is what it claims to be and does what it claims to be able to do. I've been using it to connect three computers to my DSL router for months now with no real problems. The reason I'm replacing it, though, is that it's just too loud. It's got an internal fan that makes a constant whining noise that seems to be getting louder as it gets older (or maybe I'm just going nuts).

2-0 out of 5 stars This unit works ok but has an incredibly noisy little fan!
All in all I'd have to say that this is an acceptable unit performance-wise, made unacceptable by one super noisy little internal fan. Believe me - when people complain about it from the next room it's noisy! If you can put up with the noise you'll get acceptable and reliable performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars D-Link's DSH-5 gives excellent network performance!
I bought D-Link's DSH-5 and was truely amazed at this hub's awesome performance. It provided me a fast connectivity solution that I was looking for to support my 10/100 computers. My experience with the installation was so simple, I couldn't resist breaking a smile. I definitely received the expandability I needed to connect 3 computers to my print server. I now have a quick and convenient mini-network for my home. I shared files between my computers and sent print jobs to my printer and everything functioned like a sophisticated high-end network system. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who is serious about networking a small office or home. This unit would also be ideal for gaming purposes because of its fast instant broadcast signal. This hub comes with a lifetime warranty, free technical support(if needed), and you cannot go wrong with Amazon's excellent price. Two thumbs up for this great hub, and many thanks to Amazon and D-Link products for making networking simple and inexpensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars cheap in every sense of the word
I had to send in the switch within 2 months because it stopped working. The replacement after a week started making a loud noise (the fan I think) which I was told was "normal." Then one of the ports stopped working. So it is now on a shelf as my emergency replacement switch in case one of my new (3-COM) switches stops working. ... Read more
