Amazon.com Review

Medical studies have shown that daily exercise--even walking for just a half an hour--is beneficial for long-term health. If you've resolved to incorporate more exercise into your lifestyle but don't have the time for a regimented exercise program, the SportBrain Personal Fitness Assistant might be the solution for you.

This small, lightweight device clips to the waistline of your pants or skirt and measures the number of steps you take. You then connect the SportBrain to the SportPort (much like a PDA's synchronization cradle) to upload the day's activity data to the SportBrain Web site, which then provides a wide range of information.

Setting up the SportBrain was quick and easy. We connected to the SportBrain Web site and registered our device, which then provided us a personalized home page. We then clipped the SportBrain to our pants (near the hip, above the knee) and started walking. At the end of the day, we connected the SportPort to our telephone line, then snapped the SportBrain into the SportPort, which automatically dialed in to the SportBrain Web servers and uploaded our activity in a little over a minute.

We then logged onto our SportBrain home page to see our stats. The device monitors steps taken (whether you're walking or running) and translates that into distance covered (in miles) and calories burned. The site also offered a number of different graphs and snapshots of the most active sections of our day (which displayed the range of time, steps/mileage, and average speed). Additionally, you can set goals for yourself (the default is 10,000 steps) and work toward rewards (such as a SportBrain baseball cap).

The SportBrain won't fully replace a personal trainer (you'll still have to motivate yourself, though with some helpful prodding from the SportBrain Web site) and it's really geared toward the more casual exerciser (as opposed to a tri-athelete). But it's a fun and helpful gadget that can help keep you honest about your exercise routine.

Pros:

  • Easy operation; no connection to PC (only to phone line)
  • Free Web-based service
  • Detailed charting of activity provided on Web site

Cons:

  • Requires connection to the Internet
  • Geared more to the casual exerciser

4-0 out of 5 stars Sportbrain Rocks!
I'm generally a slacker and not really one to jump into fitness fads (the plastic wrap is still on my tao-bo tapes), but I really like using my Sportbrain Personal Fitness Assistant. It's built to meet the needs of the mall-walker and the marathoner. It's a fun tool to help you monitor what you already doing and incents you to do more.

First off, the directions are very simple to follow and the Sportbrain only requires you to plug it in to your existing phone line. No worries about computer compatability! Next, you just clip the sportbrain to your belt or waistband and the little "brain" does all the rest.

I download my info every night when I get home and then access my personal page to see how I did for the day. The brain collects data on how many steps you take, how far you run/walk and what your pace was throughout the day. The information is nicely displayed and I also like the "competitive" information. Sportbrain collects info about all it's wearers and then shows you comparison graphs based on your gender and age group. I love knowing I walked twice as far as others in my group! Or, on my slacker days when I don't meet my goal the site shows precisely how little I walked that day.

The Sportbrain website also has lots of nifty tools, charts and graphs to help you monitor your fitness progress. I took my brain on vacation with me. It stored a week's worth of info before I came back and downloaded. I was amazed to find out I walked 9.7 miles in one day while siteseeing in Boston. I also like that the Sportbrain monitors your pace as well so you get to see spikes on your graphs for when you have to run to catch the bus.

The only downside to the Brain is remembering to wear it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Went out of business Once
Beware Sportsbrain has been around a few years but about 3 years ago they closed shop took everyones money and disappeared. My $99 sports brain was useless. I would not trust this "new" and improved site untill they have a track record of 24-36 months, unless you don't mind losing $99 and then you can use the Sportsbrain as a paper weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love my sportbrain
My SB has gotten me motivated - I love seeing the step number go up. The site has been reliable and easy to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars RIP OFF!
I give this product one star because there is no selection for none. I got one of these for x-mas and it worked great for two days, then the website went down and I haven't been able to access it ever since. There are no telephone numbers to call, no email addressed to mail. Not to mention that there is no indication on the box that this is a product that requires a membership of $14.95 per month to use. Do not waste your money and get discouraged! Buy a different pedometer and keep track of the results yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!!!!
THIS PRODUCT REQUIRES AN ONLINE MEMBERSHIP AND AN ACTIVATION FEE. THIS IS NOT CLEAR IN ANY PACKAGING OR PRODUCT EXPLANATIONS. EVEN THE WEB SITE DOESN'T GIVE A CLEAR PRICE. TRY FINDING IT!! TRY A DIFFERENT PRODUCT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY 14.95 A MONTH. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy a HRM with a real-time readout instead
I would recommend a Polar Heart Rate Monitor to go with the SportBrain, so you can see the readout real-time. With the SportsBrain brand you can only see heart data AFTER your workout.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great strap! But remember to consider your options...
This is a great strap. It is comfortable enough to wear all day. I'd suggest you either get this as a stand-alone product or as part of the championship Sportbrain pack (which includes the strap, a 'brain' tracker, and a sportport.

However, keep in mind that there are other straps that work with the Sportbrain (it's great they didn't stick with their own proprietary system and charge lots of money)

Here's a list from Sportbrain's FAQ on their web site (listed in the 'Help' section).

Good luck with your purchase!

---Straps That Will Work with Sportbrain Made by Polar: M21, M22, Favor, Tempo, Beat, FitWatch, Pacer (Polar straps are generally the ones that come with a watch so you can watch your heart rate in real-time - Sportbrain's heartstrap doesn't have this feature) Made by CardioSport: First, Limit Classic, GO, Autozone, Premier, Advanced, Profile, Heartsafe TZ, Exel Sport, Exel Sport PC Made by Acumen: Excel, Excel ES, Basix, Basix ES, Basix Plus, Basix Plus ES, TZ Max 50, TZ Max 100 Made by Vetta: HR440, HR454

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works!
This is a slick little piece of technology. The tiny strap communicates wirelessly with the sportbrain unit to track your heart rate. Although there is no real time readout, it downloads automatically with the other information and appears on your website in graph and chart form. It is small and fairly comfortable to wear. There are no buttons to set; you don't even have to turn it own. Just put it on and go. Although probably intended to track heart rate during exercise, I wore mine the first day around work to get some baseline information about my heart rate during the day during my normal activities. It was small enough under my shirt that no even noticed it. I plan to do this again in a few months to see if I can see evidence of cardiovascular conditioning from my exercise. This is a nice product that is surprisingly inexpensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Heart Monitors the SportBrain CAN read
The SportBrain CAN receive heart rate data from other Heart Monitors. I own a Polar Target Heart Monitor and it comes with a 'watch' that tells you your heart rate in real time. The Sport Brain Heart Rate Strap works, it's just fine for people who don't need real time heart rate data. I do a lot of Cardio so I like to know where I am in terms of my 'target' heart rate. I adore my SportBrain and love being able to visualize my day in the graphs and track my fitness activity through the course of the month. I print my weekly data from the web-site and keep it in a handy loose-leaf book for future 'hard-copy' reference. I look forward to the many wearable fitness monitors that will surely be hitting the market! Bio-feedback of this kind is just awesome!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart Rate
I was a little confused at first, but now I understand that the SportBrain 'Brain' can receive signals from a heart rate strap. This means it also collects heart rate data and now I can also check out my heart rate graphs and average for an activity. This is an excellent tool to help my training, the only thing lacking is a 'real time' read, but it is great to go back after a work out and be able to see my heart rate graph, all with out any wires or pushing any buttons or setting anything up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sport Brain IS UP AND RUNNING!
Yes, SB did have problems, they are back and up and running, this is the most motivational tool I have ever found to get me motivated and weight loss. It is an investment, yes, but it is money well spent

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of business - DON'T BUY!!!
Sportbrain, Inc. recently went out of business. Their business model didn't allow them to continue operating a free online service. Without their proprietary dial-up service, the units are worthless.

They desperately wanted to control your data (rather than dump the data on your own computer), but look where it got them.......

Loved my Sportbrain, but alas, it is no longer...

1-0 out of 5 stars Sport Brain Bust
I purchased Sport Brain "Buddy Brains" for my husband in June. Since that time we have enjoyed walking and competing together in our efforts to get back in shape. However, now that Sport Brain has gone out of business, we are unable to use these devices as we cannot upload our personal information to the web site. That makes these Sport Brains totally useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laeve home without it...
It's too bad that Sportbrain shut down. The concept was great, and the potential expansion into other exercises would have been nice. However, a business model that has the consumer buy the product then provides free service forever obviously didn't work. I would pay a few $$/month to "subscribe," and I'm sure there are hundreds of others. Let's hope someone can figure out how to resurrect it, and we can go back & look at out old data.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it
My husband and I have had our Sportbrains since April, and we love them! I have more than a few extra pounds to lose, and know that exercise is the key to losing the extra weight. My husband thought it would just be another piece of exercise equipment bought with good intentions, but rarely used. Was he ever wrong! I have finally found something that motivates me daily. It's the first thing I put on in the morning and the last thing I take off at night, because I don't want to miss any steps. I love everything about my Sportbrain. I love the design and the different colored Sportfaces to match my outfits, telling people about it when they ask what I'm wearing on the waistband of my pants, and most of all I love how it's increased my activity level. It couldn't be simpler to use. Just clip it on the waistband of your pants or belt and start stepping (walking). Anytime (or several times) during the day or night you simply put the Sportbrain into it's little Sportport and transmit the data to the website via a phone line. Everything you'd want to know is then displayed for you on your own home page within Sportbrain's site. There are charts that show you how many steps you've taken for the day, week, and month at a glance, and much more. I find myself wanting to get out and walk for at least ten minutes just to see that I've had a "Sportivity." I like gadgets, but not if they are too complicated or time consuming. If it takes me more time to enter all the data into a computer or hand held device than it does for me to chart it on a piece of paper then the gadget is not for me. That's the great thing about Sportbrain. All I have to do is put the Sportbrain in the Sportport and voila! The rest is done for me. If my Sportbrain were ever to be lost or taken away I think I'd need a 12-step group, because I am seriously addicted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, motivating tool accompanied by inspiring community!
The success stories I've read on the message boards are heart warming. Skeptical couch potatoes donned the handy little SportBrain, watched their steps accumulate, were motivated to exercise more and watched the pounds and inches disappear.

Whether you need a kick in the pants to walk around the block or you're training for a marathon, you're in good company - the community consists of strollers and Ironman athletes, walkers, runners, sprinters and marathoners. SportBrain's following is growing by leaps and bounds! Share information, tips, advice and triumphs!

But, if all you want to do is see pretty, inspiring graphs and stats (and Happy Hearts for meeting your step goal) and to keep a log, SportBrain is extremely user-friendly.

Get one! Be one of the happy exercisers you see here and about. We're SportBrain users!
I am WatchHerGo, SportBrain devotee since March 26, 2001 - going strong three years later! ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without it
What a wonderful and motivating product. It not only monitors the number of steps you do, which calculates into miles, it also gives you the support and understanding of others that feel the same way you do. The support of the staff of sportbrain answers questions quickly and help in any way possible. The clients motivate and also help with questions-casual walkers to ulta marathoners. If you want to get up and get off the couch this product is for you. Definately a 5 STAR product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best exercise motivator ever!!
The Sportbrain is without a doubt the best piece of exercise equipment I have ever bought. It was very easy for me to set up. Then I was off running (well, walking). All my information was then sent via modem to my own personal Sportbrain website. The information given is wonderful. Not only distance, time and speed, but comparison to others the same age and others within your club. There are many graphs to show progress, plus I really liked that you could design your own graph!!

The clubs are a powerful motivating factor, also, as I never wanted to be near the bottom of the list. You also can send and receive messages from others in your club. Everyone has been so positive and encouraging.

My husband and 2 kids now own Sportbrain's and it has already become a competitive family thing. My daughter was doing laps around the house last night to try and better her brother!!

We love Sportbrain and would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to lose weight and get moving!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool
This is the greatest tool I have come across.... to keep one honest about efforts to keep in shape... shows when walk...exercise... run.... of thinking you are putting out when you are not.... love it.. Great product... and going to try get it for my whole family....If you have no one to exercise with SB clubs provide that too.... and a very responsive Company... am so impressed

5-0 out of 5 stars Sportbrain Tracker
I received the Sportbrain as a Christmas gift. It is easy to figure out how to use - customer service was responsive with my questions. I wear it all the time and so track all my 'on land' activities. (Only downside is that it cannot be worn while swimming). The goal of 10,000 steps a day is reachable and I find that I walk 2 -3 miles a day at work. Motivates me not only to work out but also to use stairs instead of elevator whenever possible. Highly recommended for anyone interested in monitoring activity levels. ... Read more

Sportbrain is a GREAT service with a loyal following and the best way I have ever found to egg myself into fitness.

The company, on the other hand, is less than stellar. It died about a year and a half ago from a lack of profit model. It was revived about three weeks ago, but seems to have died again. All the registered user areas including personal data, forums, chat etc. have been now inaccessible since yesterday morning. They are not returning e-mail.

I would not buy this product until there is some assurance that they will be in business. ... Read more
