Amazon.com Product Description

Spin your commercial CDs, your homemade music CDs of almost any stripe with Sony's versatile, full-circle D-NS505 S2 Sports-styled Walkman portable CD player. Designed for rugged outdoor use, the player features active control playback operation so you can make changes to your program literally while you're on the run. Sony's "h.ear" clip-on headphones are designed for streamlined comfort.

Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NS505's water-resistant body and heat-resistant lid helps protect it against the elements, with rubber gaskets, bushings, and splash-resistant seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt.

Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and--thanks to Sony's great work in DSP efficiency--more than 75 hours of ATRAC3plus CD or more than 50 hours of audio CD playback from 2 AA batteries (not included).

The D-NS505's 2-line dot-matrix display is built right into its handstrap, offering full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps).

Digital Mega Bass Sound boosts your music's low end without high clarity and low distortion, and there's also a built-in equalizer with 3 preset curves and 1 customizable setting. Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo "Y" interconnect.

The player also works with an optional AC/DC 4.5V power adapter (AC-E45HG or -E45A).

2-0 out of 5 stars Intermittent CD Player
I have returned this unit twice to no avail. It has an irritating flaw of not recognizing/not loading a CD and skipping its place in the tray. Sometimes it plays all five CDs, sometimes only one. Not what I expected from Sony.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sony's CDP-CE375 May Have Some Flaws!
My Sony CDP-CE375 5-disc carousel changer had a major flaw which may or may not be present in all their units. When loading a cd in tray 1 often the cd player would not drop the disc down into it's play position and therefore the front info. panel would say "No Disc". You would have to press "open" and then "close" it again before the cd player would then do it the proper way. This can be very irritating to say the least. This particular cd player does have remote control as well as a headphone jack. There are volume controls on the remote which allow one to control the volume when using the headphone jack. There's also a jog dial to quickly switch tracks. You can play cd's, cdr's and cdrw's in the unit. A cool function of this unit is that you can change discs while one is playing. Also, this player has digital optical out if you want to record cd's digitally from the player to a cd recorder. The sound quality is excellent and I had no problems playing back cdr's or cdrw's. A good unit if the above mentioned problem didn't exist. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's KV-20FS120 20-inch WEGA TV may be the smallest display you'll ever consider using as a home-theater component. Its FD Trinitron tube delivers strong image accuracy, wide viewing angles, outstanding contrast, and impressive corner-to-corner detail. The visually flat FD Trinitron tube minimizes annoying glare from light sources, which enhances contrast. Corner-to-corner details are rendered more accurately because images aren't distorted by a curved screen. Squares look square, straight lines appear straight, and circles are circular.

Velocity modulation (selectable: off, high, low) improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Top-of-the-line component-video inputs minimize digital and line-scan artifacts from compatible video sources, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between a set of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience when hooking up a camcorder or gaming console. You may also label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection.

The set produces stereo audio with 10 watts per channel. Its Dynamic Picture Processor circuitry maintains image detail in the very bright and dark areas of each scene, while vertical aperture compensation sharpens picture definition and edge detail on the vertical plane). Other features include tilt correction and Trinitone color temperature control.

Using Sony's channel-fix feature, you can select a specific TV channel (3, for example) for cable box reception, then subsequently control a compatible cable box via the TV's remote without inadvertently changing the TV from your designated input channel. Favorite channel offers one-button access to the last 8 channels you've tuned (auto) or the last 8 favorites that you've preset (manual).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best flat screen monitor for the money...
My Sony SDM-HX93 is the best monitor I've ever owned. This is the third flat screen monitor my family has (I have an HP and another 17" Sony) and this is by far the most wonderful device! The colors and brightness are incredible, very clean text and great performance. Setup was very easy and intuitive. With MS XP no driver installation is required - just connect and go; it configures itself to the best resolution. I loved the back-slide panel that neatly hides the cables. If your display is important to you - purchase this monitor. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Affordable yet packed with features, the Sony SLV-N900 VCR produces excellent picture quality and is quick and easy to program. It features four heads for optimized playback and recording, hi-fi VHS audio playback, and cable box/DirecTV receiver control.

Recording TV programs is easy with the VCR Plus+C system. Just look up the "PlusCode" number assigned to a program (published in the TV section of most newspapers and cable TV listings) and enter the number into the VCR--the date, time, and channel are automatically set. You can also manually record programs--up to eight at any one time. The QuickSet Timer Dial lets you quickly program a recording when time is of the essence, even without turning on your TV. The Commercial Skip feature--a 30-second skip search--makes it easy to jump through recorded ads, while the unit's jog/shuttle control allows for precise, frame-accurate rewinding and fast-forwarding.

If you have a video camcorder, it's easy to connect it to the line-in jacks at the front of the SLV-N900. The back of the VCR features line-in and line-out connections for RCA-style jacks and coaxial cable. It also has a Control S input, which enables direct IR control of VCR unit when a Control S-equipped Sony TV or receiver is used.

The included Cinema Illumination remote control can control both Sony and non-Sony TVs, as well as cable boxes and digital satellite receivers equipped with an infrared remote control. It has glowing keys that are easily viewed in low-light settings.

Other features include:

  • Available play modes (speeds): SP/LP/EP
  • 19 micron heads ensure higher-quality recording in EP mode
  • 17-inch width
  • Flash Rewind feature rewinds a T-120 cassette in about 60 seconds
  • Energy Star compliant
  • Index scan and play: The VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins. Access can use these signals as a reference to find a specific recording.
  • Instant replay: The tape can be immediately rewound and playback started on the scene. During playback, the replay button is pressed and the tape is rewound 10 seconds on the counter for each press of the button.

Tech Talk

  • Four-head VCR: A VCR requires two video heads to record a picture. With four heads, a VCR can perform special effects like slow motion and freeze frame, and it is optimized for recording and playback in both the SP (2-hour) and SLP (6-hour) modes. You'll also get a better picture from rental videos with a four-head VCR.
  • Hi-fi VHS: The standard VHX format with Dolby Surround Pro-Logic encoded in the stereo audio channels, which produces near-CD-quality sound. You'll need an A/V receiver with Dolby Surround Pro-Logic decoding to take full advantage of this feature.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deffective
As all other Sony products I have recently purchased, this VCR was found to be deffective. Remote control would not function properly. Returned to Amazon.com for refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent VCR, very good picture quality
This is about as good of a VHS VCR you will find. If you want better quality and more features, look SVHS. But if you want a solid, old school VHS player/recorder, this is an excellent choice. The jog-dial recording system is a BREEZE: your 80 year old grandmother could program this VCR. Its also got excellent picture quality on both commercial recordings and my old personal recordings, and content recorded on the SLV-N900 is also very good for VHS. I love the commercial advance feature, which I relied upon until I got Tivo, and also the high-speed rewind and fast forward features. But hey, its a VCR. Not exactly cutting edge tech, now is it. If you must get one, I recommend this one. Sony seems to be one of the only companies that still delivers a quality VHS VCR, despite their early fumbles with rival Betamax!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
When my six and a half year old JVC gave out, after working perfectly for all those years, I started shopping for a new VCR. After comparison shopping I decided on the Sony SLVN900.

After 96 days of only occasional use it stopped working-would not play or record and ate two brand new tapes. Finding no solutions on the Sony web site I called Sony. Their idea to reset the unit did not work so I called back and they agreed to do an exchange, for a refurbished unit, for $30. I now have $150 plus tax invested in a refurbished unit. Hopefully, this refurbished VCR is in like new condition inside but who knows. I have only had this second unit four days so the verdict is still out.

The auto clock and channel preset did not work on the first one and does not work on the second one. With the fast rewind it is nearly impossible to stop the tape where I want it. Usually several tries are needed.

On the remote the number keys only work when setting the timer. Otherwise, you have to scroll through all the channels. These keys only work with a Sony TV, not with any other brand. Keys on the remote are bit small and harder to use than other brands.

Sony reps on the phone were great to deal with. But, with this experience I will not buy another Sony product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptably poor Control S support
When I bought it about 7 years ago, I wanted a home theater setup that my wife, kids, babysitters, parents, et cetera could all use. I wanted it to be as simple to use as a standard VCR+TV rig... preferably simpler. I bought an all-Sony stack, and it worked pretty well: putting a prerecorded tape into the VCR would power up the VCR and start it playing, and the VCR would use Control S to command the receiver to power on and select the VCR input. I had an RCA TV, so you did have to turn the TV on independently, but that's all: insert the tape, turn the TV on. CD and cassette tape were similar; insert a CD and the receiver would select the CD input.

My old Sony SLV-790HF started to flake out, so I went to get a new VCR. Sony, of course, so it would work with the system. Well, my first unhappy surprise was finding that relatively few Sony components support Control S these days. It doesn't seem like they have a replacement... they just don't support anything like that any more. Only the top of the line SLV-N900 has Control S. OK, it's only a few extra bucks, so I bought one.

I plugged it in, popped a tape in, the tape began to play... but the receiver didn't switch to the VCR input. Seems the SLV-N900 doesn't support the automatic switching that was the reason for buying this unit, and the reason for staying with Sony at all. Telephone and online support confirm this. Unacceptable. Back to the store it went.

I don't know what I'm going to do. I can limp along with my old SLV-790HF, or maybe I can find a used older model. Maybe I'll just switch the whole stack over to JVC and Compu Link.

I'm just astounded that Sony doesn't understand that this kind of feature is the kind of thing that locks people into your brand and keeps them coming back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey!
Why doesn't Amazon open a brick & mortar store for hi-fi!!? I mean, I'm batting four for four here with equipment I've gotten from here, generally through J&R Music & Computer, and each piece has performed beautifully from the git-go!

I was desperate when I ordered this item. VHS is apparently on its way out, but there are still a few brands that market good ones for not too outrageous prices...some, in fact, were TOO cheap....making me immediately suspicious. After a rather looong search for a decent model, I finally settled on Sony, since: 1) It was one of the few still in the feature-laden mid-price range and 2) the other manufacturers were either more expensive for the same features and manufacturing quality or so cheap and tacky looking as to be put offs.

I was not diappointed! This Sony VCR has hi-fi stereo sound, a jog-shuttle dial, (something you used to get only on VERY expensive units once), front A-V RCA inputs, a VERY fast rewind, slo-mo, commercial skip, VCR+plus and has its own programmable remote! You can't beat that with a stick for this price range.

Here's to falling electronics prices!! ... Read more

Asin: B00022RV9E
Catlog: CE
Manufacturer: Sony
Sales Rank: 6989

Amazon.com Product Description

Home theater may be the rage, but there's no getting around the need for affordable, high-quality music playback, and Sony's STR-DE197 stereo receiver can be a huge help in that department. The integrated amplifier pumps out 100 watts per channel across both its 2 channels and uses discrete output transistors--that is, transistors in place of cheaper and lower-quality integrated-circuit chips--to ensure high-quality music presentations.

The receiver features an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and a UniCommander remote control with phosphorescent glow keys for easy access, even in the dark. Separate A and B speaker outputs (stereo left/right) let you listen to the same program across two sets of speakers placed in different parts of the house.

There's no phono input, but the unit's 4 stereo analog audio (left/right RCA) inputs accommodate, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, your cable-box outputs, or a DVD player. (Make sure your television has sufficient inputs for the number of video sources whose audio you plan to route through the receiver.) A bass-boost circuit enhances your program's low frequencies for greater musical or cinematic input.

A switched AC outlet lets you plug another device into the receiver, conserving wall sockets and powering up the plugged devices at the same time as the receiver. When the receiver powers on and off, so also will the component plugged into the power outlet, provided you leave its power set to "on." Listening at night? Plug into the receiver's .25-inch headphone jack so you won't wake the family or neighbors.

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's fully HDTV-ready KV-36HS420 36-inch FD (flat display) Trinitron WEGA television offers a huge screen, analog and digital high-definition inputs, great audio features, and a suite of picture-enhancing technologies. Whether you're watching VHS tapes, DVDs, or high-definition (480p, 720p, 1080i) broadcasts, your programs will look breathtakingly good.

The set's standard 4:3 aspect ratio, Hi-Scan 1080i display, and picture-improvement circuitry let you view a mix of source signals at high resolutions, up to 1080i. DRC--Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction circuitry--upconverts standard interlaced (480i) video sources to 960i or progressive-scan 480p, while inputs as high-quality as 720p (720 lines, progressively scanned) are upsampled to full 1080i. Because DRC processes video signals in real time, it creates an image with 4 times the density of the original signal.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The set's auto 16:9 enhanced mode detects anamorphically encoded widescreen program sources and offers full picture resolution on the video program, wasting none of its usable lines of resolution on the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

The KV-36HS420's high-voltage regulator maintains consistent image size, despite variations in brightness during scene changes and channel changes, while magnetic quadra-pole technology reduces "beam spot" distortion and improves corner-to-corner focus and picture sharpness.

ClearEdge VM wideband velocity modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The set's 3D digital comb filter compares each horizontal scanning line with the lines above and below it, as well as with the corresponding lines on previous and subsequent video frames. This results in higher horizontal resolution, higher vertical resolution, and reduced video noise.

The KV-36HS420 also employs CineMotion Reverse 3-2 PullDown technology (often called 3:2 pulldown), a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movies in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Finally, Dynamic Focus circuitry automatically adjusts the picture during each scanning line for consistent corner-to-corner sharpness.

Two high-definition component-video inputs grant optimum connection with a DTV decoder and progressive-scan DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. The set's HDMI interface provides a digital connection with your DTV receiver. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable.

Choose between rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience. A rear AV output offers a switchable fixed- and variable-level analog audio output for hookup with a surround receiver or integrated amplifier.

The set features stereo speakers (with 10 watts per channel) and BBE sound enhancement. You can label the set's video inputs and channels for easy selection. If you don't have Dolby Pro Logic processing or a surround speaker system, the TV's SRS TruSurround will simulate surround sound through any 2 speakers.

Other video technologies include auto white balance, Dynamic Focus circuitry, Dynamic Picture Processor circuitry, Trinitone color temperature control, and vertical aperture compensation. An optional accessory for the set is the Sony audio/video cabinet SU-36HX1.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performer
I purchased this boombox just as a hurricane was threatening (the third of the season) and wanted a decent battery powered radio. The unit was well made and extremely convenient to haul around given the handle configuration. Additionally, the tuner's ability to capture even weak/distant fm radio signals was a great bonus. As always, Sony comes through and although I agree that you do pay a little more for the Sony brand, the quality is always there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid product you can depend on.
Before purchasing this unit I searched many sites on line for reviews, and kept finding the same 3 reviews, as if they were copied and spread from site to site because no one else took the time to review this product. So I will now add my thoughts, recently having purchased the Sony ZS-X1 boombox.

I will admit that I hesitated a bit before buying this because of several negative reviews I found. There's a review floating around saying the sound quality is terrible. The person did say that they were using it outside constructing decks or whatever, and admitted it sounded better at lower levels. I think I can understand how this boombox will not rock anyone's world outside, which is actually a difficult task with any portable player, given the ambient noise of the outdoors be it urban or suburbia.

My review is based on this; I am replacing a boombox I had in my kitchen, and I usually play music while doing the dishes (some ambient noise in itself, yet of course in an enclosed environment). I think this Sony unit sounds excellent. The 'megabass' feature truly does add bass that my last TWO units NEVER had... I believe my former units were in the $45-65 price range. This Sony is definitely a bang for the buck device, and I am truly happy with the sound and physical design.

I had no need for a waterproof device, yet my Sony sports Discman always outlasted any other brand due to the anti-shock, rugged construction, so I figured the boombox should also have a long lifespan. Are you paying for a name? Possibly... but it certainly is one I trust.

I confess that I cannot accurately comment on the longevity of this product, since I've only had the unit a few days. However, I just wanted to add a few thoughts to let people know that this device sounds excellent and best of all has a little low end punch to make music lovers of any genre enjoy. I bought the boombox based on Sony's reputation and my previous experiences with their products, and I have no regrets. Remember, it's a portable boombox, not a home theatre system.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Cd player ever!!
One night I had my old boombox and it all of a sudden would not read cd's anymore the motor ran out it was a memorex so i went to Target and saw this boombox on sale for 89.99 I was surprised. I jump on my trampoline and i go through boomboxes really fast i have had this boombox for about 6 months and it is awesome. The bass sounds great and my neighbors couldn't beleive how great it sounded. I use it outside all the time and it always works for me and i have it on full blast while I jump with my neighbors on my trampoline and it is the best I have owned.

2-0 out of 5 stars volume disappointing
We bought this radio for the workplace. We work outdoors building decks. We liked the design because its easy to carry (very ergonomic). It seems pretty durable and it plays mp3's wich is a big plus....however
the sound is terrible! Its ok at low levels but distorts greatly on the high end. Also it doesn't get loud enough period. I would only recommend this to someone for the workplace maybe, who never intends on playing it loud.

1-0 out of 5 stars CRAP!!
I recieved this cd player as a gift. It worked very well for almost 6 months. I started noticing strange watery noises in the background of my mp3 cds. It grew to be so loud and distracting that I cannot listen to mp3 cds anymore. Then regular cds, burned or not, could not be read. It just spins around really fast, and displays: no disc. I have to take the cds out and put them back in 5-10 times to get the stupid thing to read. I have not beat on this thing at all, it looks brand new still. I am very disappointed with this cd player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Radio, has its Limitations
I bought this little radio after the power went out for the entire evening in my house (pretty common here) and I found myself without any portable radio. This was during the Red Sox/Yankees game, no less. I liked the TV along with AM/FM and weather band capabilities on this unit, so I bought it. It's not perfect, but serves me well. Like other reviewers here, I agree the FM sound quality could be better...you can get better bass response in units half this cost. However, it IS stereo and at lower volumes is very acceptable. AM talk radio quality is very good and often what I'll be using this for. TV reception for me is just so-so and is limited to the first 12 channels, so you won't be picking up your cable TV shows. In any event, the TV channel feature is useful for breaking news. I've just used this indoors so far, but cannot hardly hear anything on the weather bands. This surprised me as I live 7 miles from Boston, but maybe it works better outdoors. As for FM quality, I tried using this with a higher quality headphone but didn't notice much difference. That's OK; for an emergency radio it's great knowing this uses only one small AAA battery. That should get me through a lot of blackouts and hurricanes, God forbid. The clock is convenient and the buttons are all easy to use and setup. All in all, nice piece of solid engineering and one I'd recommend to my radarmarketing.biz clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Most
I purchased this for use when walking my dogs. I wanted digital tuning in a small package. I tried the SRF-M37V along with several other similar radios and found it to be the best.

Pros:
1)Small and sturdy. So light you will forget you're wearing it.
2)Excellent battery life. I am using a basic Walgreens battery and it has lasted for weeks.
3)Sound quality. Even with the base headphones that others here have criticised, this unit has excellent sound.
4)Lock out button so you don't accidently bump the unit and lose your station.

Cons:

1) Presets buttons are the same size and shape as the weather band button. When walking, I often will accidently hit it when I try to go by feel rather than having to look at the unit. The band button is slightly smaller and thus avoids this problem.
2)Reception is good, but not great. No other unit was measurably better. AM was weak at night, stronger during the day, FM would fade in and out a bit from time to time, and the weather band is very low volume. TV band is all but useless where I live.
3)Digital display isn't backlit. Hard to see at night unless you pass under a streetlight or use your flashlight.

In summary, it sounds good, is fairly inexpensive, is durable, and easy to carry. Give it a try!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony SRF-M37V Walkman
Worst reception I have ever had in all the various Sony headsets I have purchased over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right for the purpose
I use walkman-type radios a lot. I have had several different ones over the years, including fancy Sangeans. None had any better reception or sound quality than this one. (I use Sony earbuds with an inline volume control.) None has even come close, in battery longevity. I use rechargeables, and having to carry only one spare cell in my pocket is great: the others require changing two batteries. I particularly commend Sony for leaving out the stupid, useless, bulky self-contained speaker that many others have. This is one of several good experiences I have had with Sony products in recent years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Radio, A Bit Overpriced
This is a decent radio, albeit (at least in my opinion) a bit overpriced. Size is great, and is the main reason why I am giving it 3 stars rather than 2 stars (headphones fit comfortably as well). FM reception is not as good as AM. I don't mind that as I enjoy using it to listen to talk radio. I would not recommend this radio if you want to primarily listen to FM. A perfect example would be the fact that I live in Rhode Island approximately 150 miles from New York City. When I want to listen to Yankee games, I can't get the Rhode Island FM station that broadcast the games, so I have to listen to WCBS-AM out of New York City. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice box
sony has addressed most of the complaints people had of their previous model. for example, this unit allows shuffle of mp3 within a folder, or within the entire cd. There is no lag in the play of mp3 files, and they added support for variable bit rate. The included software is easy to use and powerful. All in all an excellent choice for the beach, on a boat, or on the go. Only complaint is the speakers are a bit small, and the sound at times is a bit tinty. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony RDR-GX7 component DVD recorder is the world's first standalone, dual-RW (DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW) home DVD player/recorder. Its format versatility gives you nearly complete recording and viewing freedom--the flexibility to create or view optical media for or from most computer DVD recorders. Further, the machine can accommodate the recordable optical formats required by any of your friends and family, regardless of their DVD players (though some older players do not play recordable media).

The RDR-GX7's sophisticated camcorder control capabilities lets you manage a range of dubbing and editing functions when you connect a Digital Handycam or Digital8 camcorder through the i.LINK (IEEE 1394) interface. One-touch dubbing fosters easy tape-to-disc conversion, and you can delete unwanted scenes or make a compilation of your favorite scenes with flexible editing functions such as program edit and advanced program edit.

Several picture-enhancing technologies are aimed at creating high-quality recordings, especially when transferring images from video sources such as VHS or 8 mm camcorders. The unit can play back DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs--offering a wealth of musical enjoyment alongside its extensive video capabilities.

The playback capability of the DVD recorder is said to be comparable to the high-end DVD players in Sony's acclaimed ES line. The player/recorder delivers stunning home-theater effects through a variety of high-performance features that optimize picture quality and effectively remove noise, such as a 12-bit, 108 MHz video digital-to-analog converter with Noise Shaped Video technology, motion-adaptive field noise reduction, pre-frame noise reduction, and pre-video equalizer technologies. Variable bit-rate MPEG encoding ensures maximum efficiency and recording time (60 to 360 minutes) for all applicable DVD media.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the RDR-GX7 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Using Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive technology, the recorder also encodes your DV (digital video) input sources in pristine 480p formatting.

During playback, the RDR-GX7 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio inputs and one set of outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Despite its advanced functionality, the RDR-GX7's intelligent onscreen graphical user interface (GUI) is entirely user-friendly, helping you create personal DVD titles with thumbnail pictures and operate the recorder through the sophisticated Remote Commander remote control. There's no need to cue or rewind tape here, so accessing precise points in your programming is nearly effortless.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Performer
I decided to get a DVD recorder when my video deck died - and I'm glad I did!! Picture and sound quality are improved at least ten times, and DVD has too many cool convinience features to count compared with VHS. The Sony RDR-G7X is as easy to operate as your familiar video recorder; just select your channel and push the record button - that's it! Plus the unit gives you lots of versitility as it can handle DVD - R; - RW; and + RW. Basically, I use - R for programs I want to keep as you can't rewrite this format (and are the cheapest to buy). I use - RW Video Mode like I used to use VHS video tape as you can erase and rerecord on this disk. - RW VR mode will give you lots of editing features (and is also rewrittable), and is compatible with newer DVD players. Unfortunately, + RW has been stripped of it's editing features, and seems identical to - RW Video mode with this Sony unit. However, I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of this recorder, but so far have been very impressed by its quality, good looks, features, and performance. I shopped around a lot, did a ton of research, and concluded it to be the best consumer DVD recorder currently on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product - A little pricey.
I highly recommend this DVD Recorder for people wanting to transfer their home movie tapes to DVD and to transfer television programs directly to DVD. Recording Quality is excellent from 8 mm VCR to DVD and from VHS to DVD. I gave it 4 stars because the price is high.

I would look to a DVD Recorder with a hard drive if you want to use the recorder for editing and/or recording Television Programs.

It is very easy to set up and very easy to use.

The on screen menu system is excellent.

I have worked in the electronics business for over 10 years and ease of use is important. This one has it.

It allows many editing features if you use DVD-RW in VR Mode. (Only basic with DVD+RW and DVD-R).

Finalizing Time isn't bad either. 5 minutes for a full 2 hour movie. It sure beats the hours upon hours of encoding time a Computer takes to make a movie DVD.

DVDs created on it in Video Mode play well in all the DVD players I tried. (One was a 3-4 year old very sensative basic player).

I don't usually review products but had to post because I'm very happy with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but some limitations
I have owned this machine for only two weeks, and consumer DVD recorders have a distressing tendency to fall apart after a month or so, so what I say must be taken with a grain of salt. So far, so good. This machine offers excellent image quality and is notably more tolerant of different brands of discs than some other recorders I've owned. Far fewer "disc error" or "can't read disc" messages than my Philips or my Go-Video. Although this machine bridges the format gap by recording on DVD+RW (not +R) discs as well as DVD-R/RW discs, it does not afford the full functionality of a DVD+RW recorder. Most notably, one cannot do "thumbnail" picture icons for chapters, and I was also unable to add them using a +RW recorder to a disc first recorded on this machine (perhaps this could be done with a computer). Also, the editing capabilities of this machine, which are formidable, do not apply in +RW mode. So this is not truly a "dual" machine. Another minor note: the "one-touch" dubbing function, which operates via the firewire connection, does not work unless the tape being dubbed was digital to begin with. Thus it does not work if you're using a Digital 8 camcorder outputting a digitized signal from an older analog tape. But these images can be recorded in the "normal" way just fine. All in all, I'm very pleased, so far. Hint: check out the "used and new" merchants before you pay amazon's price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This DVD recorder is amazing! I've had it for about a month now, and have burned about 30 DVDs (both -r and -rw formats - haven't tried +rw yet). I've used three different brands of discs (Memorex, TDK, and Fuji), and not a SINGLE ONE has failed. I've burned things at SP, LP and EP speeds -- I get great quality even at the higher speeds. I do notice a bit of quality degradation when a disc is paused, but when it's running it seems just fine to me.

Altogether, an excellent product and well worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy freezes!!!!!!!!
I bought this recorder because of the features and the ability to record in -RW VR mode, which means I do not have to finalize the disc and can play this recorded disk in any of my other DVD Players. Well only in the -RW VR mode whatever you have recorded, when you play it back it ALWAYS FREEZES on the very last frame of the playback and the only way to stop it is to manually push stop, the pause light comes on and it is stuck. I called Sony tech support 3 different times and got as high as a 4th level technician, and no one could explain it. I took the machine back to best buy and the new machine did the same thing, took it back and my 3rd machine did the same thing, took it back and best buy managers took their floor model and recorded 10 seconds in the -RW VR mode and sure enough it freezes too. I did not want this to happen because if you happen to fall asleep while watching something you have recorded (as sometimes I do) then it is frozen on your screen at the end which can fog the lens in the player and cause ghosting to your TV. I am still looking at other recorders now. Any suggestions???? ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's PSYC D-EJ100PS augments its great sound and extensive features with a stylish, full-circle, flare-white exterior. And at a mere .94 inches thick, this Walkman lives up to its name, traveling with ease in pocket, purse, or backpack. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and an amazing 50 hours of playback from a pair of standard AA batteries (not included). A PSYC-styled clip-on remote makes it easy to operate the player while you're on the go, and Sony's "h.ear" clip-on headphones are designed for streamlined comfort.

"Active use" is a key phrase for this player: Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-EJ100PS's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.

You can hook the player up with your home system through an analog stereo "Y" interconnect. Should your music require it, the Walkman's Digital Mega Bass Sound engages digital processing to enhance your music with deep, authentic bass tones.

Bookmark playback lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player may be used with optional AC/DC power adapters (AC-E45HG or -E45A) or car accessories (vehicle power cord: DCC-E345 or -E34CP, car kit CPA-9).

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
I bought this to replace a 7 year old Sony Walkman CD. The old unit had been dropped a couple of times and eventually became annoying, (pausing at random moments, skipping songs, etc.) I think the old one was a good unit, it just couldn't take all my abuses. I didn't think a "sports" model would survive any better, since it is just the same thing, but water resistant.

This model runs well, reads burnt CD-R without a problem, and sounds 50% better than other brands in the same price range. They put the AA battery pocket inside the CD lid instead of under it, so I can leave the duct-tape replacement cover out of this one. It appears to be more frugal with batteries

I only gave it four stars for two design flaws. The clip-over-the-ears earphones are not an improvement over the older headphones. They tangle, the bass is a little thinner, and they don't cooperate with the earpieces of my glasses. The other flaw is the colored cover over the LCD window. The bright orange plastic makes it harder to read the LCD and I think it will be the first thing to get scratched, making reading even harder.

This will be my third Sony CD player in about 12 years. The sound and durability still make it a good buy for the money. ... Read more
