5-0 out of 5 stars Can you run a web/ftp server behing this rounter?
Can you run a webserver behind this router? Because you CAN'T do it with a SMC7004ABR

Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a home network!
I just set up my home network for three PC's and a Mac, and I am very pleased with the results. Now, I'm downloading MP3's and music videos at blazing speeds from every computer in the house. I enabled the print server for two of the PC's without difficulties and even got my intranet web server to work. I can't wait to host a networked computer game.

The configuration of the router was fairly easy, but could have been more straight-forward. The manual was written for people who get their IP addresses assigned dynamically. I have my own static IP address and had to fiddle with the menu options. (Fortunately, I just finished a Cisco CCNA networking class and was confident with my solution.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Does it all!
I've been through the whole progression of sharing the cable modem at my house for 5 home PC's and my work laptop. I started with the Microsoft solution of ICS (I specifically upgraded to Windows 98 SE to get that feature). I used thinnet on my home network and it worked ok but having to have the one PC on for the rest was awkard and it was slow for the kids multiplayer games. I then moved on to a SMC 7004BR router and it was bliss. Easy setup except the printer sharing. Even there I called their support and they walked me through it. I have since stepped up to the 7008BR for two locations I manage and these are better than the 7004BR (Faster too). I cannot recommend them enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars SMC SMC7008BR Cable/DSL Router w/8 Port Switch
This is a great NAT Router. I will not bore you with repeating all the tech specs, but the install was quick and easy. The chassis is made of metal, and uses a standard PC power cable. (Yep, you don't need an special power adapter). It has a nice large power switch on the rear also. The only problem I had was installing a HP DeskJet 722c printer. The problem is caused by the HP drivers. HP specifically writes drivers so that one must purchase a JetDirect box to network thier low-end printers. Turned out that I had to use 10.1 drivers instead of the 10.3 to workaround this problem. All in all this is a great product that deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, easy, no hassle
The unit installs easily, seems to work fine. Download speeds are just about even with my old Linksys BEFSR41, but the printer port and backup modem port are very nice additions. I'm very happy with it. My only gripe is that the only printed docs are a quick-reference card - the manual is on a CD-ROM, and I'd have preferred to get a hardcopy, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless Wireless
I bought the SMC2655W wireless access point to add wireless connectivity to an existing LAN. I am happy to report that the installation and configuration went quite smoothly, with none of the issues reported by previous reviewers. In addition, the operation of the device has been flawless ever since, offering no problems whatsoever. I've never had to cycle the power or do anything else to keep it running.

I was easily able to upgrade the firmware using the EZ Connect Wireless AP Manager software using the following steps:

1. I downloaded the latest utility software (EZ Connect Wireless AP Manager v1.7, as of this writing) and firmware revision (v1.4g7) that were available from the SMC Customer Care web site.

2. After unzipping both files (WinZip worked fine, thank you very much), I installed the Wireless AP Manager, accepting all defaults.

3. I started the Wireless AP Manager program. It automatically scanned the network and found the access point device. I connected to the device, entering the default password provided in the SMC documentation when prompted. After connecting, the Command menu items were available, including "Configure AP", "Change Password" and "Update Firmware". The current firmware version can be seen in the Command -> Configure AP dialog box.

4. I selected "Update Firmware" and selected the new firmware file (AP14g7.rom, in this case). After clicking the "Update" button, the flash ROM programming took less than 10 seconds, after which the device was automatically reset. The AP Manager program rescanned and I reconnected to the device. The Configure AP dialog box showed the new firmware version.

We regularly connect iPAQs and laptops to the network through this access point using SMC PC cards (SMC2632W). It's given us no trouble and I would gladly buy this device again. -- Scott Loban

4-0 out of 5 stars Good performance - a pain to get up and running
A month ago, I bought the SMC SMC2655W Wireless Access Point to provide access for my laptop to my small, in-home Ethernet. I use an Orinoco silver card with the laptop. I read many reviews concerning the performance of this combination, and I made the purchase based stricktly on the performance issue.

It's a good thing that I am an experienced network tech, because getting the SMC unit to work with my existing 3com ISDN router and ethernet was not easy. To start with, my router provides DHCP services to all connected workstations. However, the SMC AP didn't seem to respond properly as a DHCP client no matter what I did. Even after I did the firmware upgrade, it made no difference. In the end, I was forced to turn off DHCP on my router, manually set up the IP table in the router, and assign hard IP addresses to every device. To initially access the SMC AP to make the necessary adjustments to it, I was forced to make up a crossover CAT 5 cable and plug the AP directly into a PC to configure it. Also, even though I upgraded the manager software that comes with the AP, it still cannot find the AP automatically on the network. I have to give the manager the IP address of the AP before it can find it. Oh, yes. Don't count on much help from SMC beyond the average front-line phone tech help dummy. After I called SMC, they were ready to tell me that the unit was defective. I had already determined that it wasn't, so I proceeded without their "help" after they couldn't explain to me why it was defective.

After finally bringing the SMC online, the actual operation was flawless and performance was beyond my expectations. There is nowhere in my house or out in my yard that I can't get a full signal according to my Orinoco card monitoring software. I live on a large farm, so I decided to actually test out the range. I found that I could actually still get a medium signal and 5mbs transfer rate at over 1000 feet as long as I could maintain clear line-of-site between the SMC AP and the Orinoco card in my laptop. I could also get a full signal and 11mbs as far away as 600 feet.

No doubt the SMC has a hot radio. I even read that there was info on the web that shows how to tweak even more power out of it. However, I don't consider the installation I had to perform to be a task for the average plug-and-play user. That is why I rated the unit a 4 out of a possible 5. If the software, DHCP client sevices, and tech support were better, I would rate this unit a 10!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to set up
By comparison with the experience I had with a similar product by Linksys, this baby was up and running in no time. I set it up in a Windows XP machine and then in a Windows 98SE machine, and both times it was a breeze to get up and running. One piece of advice (I learned it the hard way): don't expect this technology to go be able to go through metal doors. It just will not happen. Other than that, in a more "normal" setting, it should perform just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This thing literally worked right out of the box with an SMC PCMCIA NIC. I typed in the AP's address and started configuring. I turned one feature on at a time until I had 128 bit WEP and access control working. The only thing that gave me any trouble is that the web interface requires "0x" before the hex for the WEP string and the NIC won't accept it. Not a big deal for me, but I can see why the guy in the store warned me that people return SMC stuff a lot because they can't figure out how to set it up.

BTW, I also have an SMC router that has worked flawlessly since I bought it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great.
This product really doesn't perform as well as I had expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great card, solid tech support, and easy installation.
This networking card is simply fantastic!

USE:
This card operates at very high speeds and is surprisingly unaffected by interference. No matter how far I roam from the SMC 7004 wireless barricade (which this card communicates with) the connectivity is exceptional.

I live in a moderately large condominium that is part of a huge building with dozens of units. This building is a VERY unfriendly place for anything wireless. In fact, my cordless phones have always had some static problems. It should be noted that these are all high grade phones and I have phones for every bandwidth (analog, 900 mhz, 2.4 ghz). Despite this unfriendly environment, the card remains unaffected and works great. Also important, it does not interfear with my 2.4 gig phones.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT.
Their technical support people are friendly and knowledgable. The tollfree number is great, and their email support is good too. Sometimes the wait can be pretty long to get ahold of one of them, but it is a toll free number, and so at least it is on their dime and not yours.

INSTALLATION:
This card is very easy to install. In fact, the first time I installed it I thought something went wrong because it was so easy I didn't think anything had happened. In fact, the card was fully installed and working great.

There is one caveat though. If you install this card on your system and then upgrade to Windows XP, you could have trouble. As of now (11/9/01), if you want this card to work you will need to do a full install of XP and not just an upgrade install. Then when you install the drivers you should be fine. Frankly, I recommend this anyways, as when I did the ugrade install I had problems with several programs that disapeared when I went back and did the full installation.

Bottom line: Great card, solid customer service, and easy installation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install on Windows ME, excellent tech support
I spent three evenings trying to install a Linksys wireless PC card (WPC11) on my Sony Vaio laptop, running Windows ME. I found it nearly impossible to install on ME (the install kept asking for .sys files that could not be found on the driver or on Windows ME). Tech support was estimating a 30 minute wait, and I could not find any useful info, drivers or email options on their website. Frustrated, I returned the Linksys card and swapped it for the SMC 2632W (same price at CompUSA). Using the Version 1.29 driver (from the SMC website) I was able to install the card in about 10 mintes on ME.

Since my router is a Linksys (which I'm very happy with), I had some communication problems at first between the SMC card and the Linksys router. I emailed the address on the SMC website and within an hour got a response from a very knowledgeable tech support person named Jason. We did some tests for diagnostics, emailing each other back and forth throughout the day. (When I praised him for his responsiveness he admitted that not everyone gets that lucky - so I may actually be overrating SMC's tech support).

Basically, the problem was that you cannot default to accessing ip addresses automatically in the Network TCP/IP settings when using this mixed system (at least for my setup). The ip address / subnet mask and gateway of the Linksys router must be specified. Also, it's important to have DNS enabled with the correct address for your region. Once the problem was diagnosed, I was wireless!

I get about 300-500 kbits/s going through 3 thick walls. It's about the same no matter where I am relative to the router throughout my 1500 sq ft house. For comparison, I get about 800 kbits/s wired. The difference is not very noticeable to me.

Bottom line, Linksys makes a great router but I was very unhappy with their wireless PC card. SMC's card was easy to install, and I had an excellent experience with their tech support.

1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get it to work
My Thinkpad G40 crashed whenever I plugged in this card (the
Cardbus version). I tried updating the drivers, and even updating
the Thinkpad BIOS, but nothing worked.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst 802.11 card I have used
The range on this card is by far the worst of any I have in operation at my site.

DO NOT BUY THIS CARD!! Go back and get ANY other card.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wireless Workhorse
Nothing fancy about this card. But is does exactly what you would expect of a good quality product. I have no problems keeping an excellent signal strength no matter where I am in my condo. And thats saying alot living in a high rise located in manhattan, where there are zillions of signals to interfere and dilute signal strength. I've had friends experience overheating of there cards after a short time using them. I use mine for hours and hours and have never had any issues at all. I highly reccomend this card, as well as a SMC router. I was able to setup my home network in 30 minutes, got awesome signal strength and have no problems if I ever need to have customer service troubleshoot my system. Often customer service centers will fault the one piece of equipment that is not theres, and then your online for hours with another service rep. So get all SMC. ... Read more
