1-0 out of 5 stars SMC High Gain Antenna only works with wireless bridge
I naively ordered a SMC wireless antenna hoping to increase my 802.11b range. Once I received it, I learned that it attaches only to an SMC wireless bridge - not any of their access points. Now I have a piece of hardware I can't use and am frustrated that the product description didn't give me that critical information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to make broadband even better.
This product was my first attempt at any type of home networking and I had never used a wireless router before. I was very interested in the wireless capability since I mostly use a notebook computer through a DSL connection. Before when I used the computer I was forced to do so in a specific corner of the room so that I was close enough to the phone line that the DSL modem was connected to. Besides the phone cable, there was the ethernet cable running from the modem to the computer, the modem power cable with huge wall wart, a printer cable and printer power cord. It was a mess. The SMC allowed me to move this whole mess into a desk unit, hidden away from sight. In all it took me about an 1/2 hour to install the SMC, connect it to my DSL modem (I did so first through the wired connection to my computer), install the print server and then the SMC wireless card. Without any prior experience the installation went smoothly and without any problem at all. The print server works like a dream and all the documentation, while not extensive, was enough to lead me through all the needed steps. I also connected one of the wired ports to my wife's MAC (I'm PC) and had her using the same DSL connection in about 5 more minutes. I haven't tried to print with the MAC through the server yet, but the documentation says it is possible, but not a supported feature. For me it would just be a bonus to be able to use the same printer for MAC and PC, but the router itself is worth it's weight in gold. I even found that my DSL connection seemed faster when routed through the SMC. The wireless performance is nothing short of amazing and although I do have spots in the house where the performance fails, it works everywhere I need it to. I found just by adjusting the position of the unit and the antenna you can make a connection even in the difficult spots. For the price I couldn't find a better rated unit with this many features and I am please to have purchased it. It's one of those things you say to yourself, "why didn't I do this sooner."

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Cost Easy to Use Wireless Product That Works
I have to say that I'm very impressed with the Barricade line of products. After going through 3 wired Linksys broadband routers, I was totally put off by their products. I would get frequent disconnects, couldn't re-logon/negotiate protocol, etc. until the routers finally died out. I saw the SMC Barricade regular broadband router (not wireless) and used it for 2 months. Not only do I believe it to the best router for the money, I believe it to be one of the best PERIOD. In the 2-month period I used the router, I never got dropped once from my connection. This made we decide to try the SMC Barricade Wireless. I've only used it 2 days, but the product actually works as advertised. I unplugged my wired router, plugged in the proper cables and I was up and running in less than 5 minutes. The web setup feature could be improved, but is still easy to use. The distances advertised are a little optimistic though. I live in a third floor apartment, and wanted to test how far I could go with my laptop. I went across the street and sat on my car and still connected to my 1500/384 dsl connection at about 350kbps. One little tip: don't put the router next to any electrical appliances (especially your desktop computer). I have mine placed on the wall about 5 feet off the floor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Took too long to set up WEP but so far so good...
Well, I replaced my Linksys BEFW11S4 with this unit. Nothing was wrong with the Linksys, just the SMC was cheaper after rebate and had a printserver. I only had to plug everything in and reboot once and the wired connection worked immediately. Wireless also has been working well for almost six hours now but initially took two hours to set up with encryption.

My system:
* Win 98SE
* Both wired and wireless machines with Linksys LNE100TX, WPC11, and Orinoco Gold cards
* HP 5L printer
* constant (8-12 hour daily) usage
* short distance (1 floor) and paper-thin walls
* I received the possibly doomed 750.5435 version. It seems to have come with all the newest firmware and drivers (I checked)
Haven't tried transfers over 4-5MB in size yet...

Pros:
* print server is cool! and works!!
* the price is right! $111 after rebate, minus coupons, etc.
* Nice status reporting in the Web configurator.
* Firewall, MAC filtering, etc.
* Uncomplicated "antihacker" logging (unlike Linksys)
* Limited lifetime warranty

Cons:
* throughput seems a little slower than the Linksys
* Unlike the Linksys, there doesn't seem to be any configuration option prevent the SMC from broadcasting your SSID (so a safety hazard.)
* the sneaking fear that this thing will poop out on me in the next year... it runs rather hot even though I dutifully stuck on the rubber feet to raise it from the table
* The "limited lifetime warranty" is pretty limited: you MUST register within 30 days of purchase or else it's only 90 days. Also, the warranty lasts till only a year after SMC stops selling this model (which may be very soon.) I wonder whether buying an SMC product with a Platinum card will double that year all the same? Double limited lifetime sounds like something that belongs in jail!
* WEP encryption is needlessly confusing and tedious! The fellow who said that a decimal-to-hex converter would have been helpful, was RIGHT.
In the end, to get WEP to work, I had to find and download a hex editor, convert my passphrase into hexadecimal, and enter it by HAND under the Manual Encryption option. This was not so easy since you only get little stars when you type (** ** ** **) so if you made a mistake typing, you wouldn't know! Then I had to reboot all the wireless machines before they could talk to the router. This could get real old if you change your passphrase daily.

I could not get the "automatic" encryption to work, despite a prolonged search for instructions on the SMC site. It may well have been translating my passphrase into hex, but again because it showed up as only stars, I couldn't make sure the wireless machines were using the same passphrase. Certainly it didn't work when I used the automatic encryption and then used the hex-translated version of my passphrase for the wireless cards.

1-0 out of 5 stars Scam Warrenty, Zero Tech Support
SMC's "Lifetime Warrenty" is good for the "Lifetime of the Product", which means that when your product stops working after 1 year (like mine did) they won't fix it. And that's only after you try for days and days to get through to tech support. If you call and they're "busy" you don't even wait on hold, they say "call us back later". And of course, when you call back later, they're still busy. I went through this cycle for days and days until I finally got through and was told my warrenty was worthless.

Buy this product at your own peril.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Had this for more than a year with 4 wireless clients (2 SMCs, 1 Netgear, and 1 Dell TrueMobile). Easy set up (Web interface is decent), great value for the low price I paid (after rebate). I don't use the print server so I can't comment.

The only gripe I had is this thing does require occassional resets. I have it connected to a DSL router and this Ethernet interface occasionally get disconnected and the only way to bring it back is to reset the Barricade. The wireless interface stays up, however, so I can reset it via the Web interface and don't have to walk to the Barricade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
So, what is important in a Wireless Access Point? To me, range of operation, throughput, reliability, ease of setup, and warranty are the most important. I have to rate this product a 5 over all!

Range of Operation and Throughput
---------------------------------
Suffice it to say, this combination of Access Point and Card cover my entire house. I connect at 11Mbps most places in the house. At the furthest point from the base unit, I connect reliably at 2Mbps. Not bad, considering that is through 3 walls and a floor! I can roam anywhere browsing the web and can't notice any difference in speed (Using a 1Mbps aDSL).

Reliability
-----------
I want something I set up once and never have to touch again. I work from home, so I am on the wireless every day of the week. I need a connection I can rely on. My connection has been as reliable as a wired ethernet, with the added bonus that I can roam anywhere around the house with my laptop.

Ease of setup
-------------
This was a piece of cake! Install the card in your laptop, using the drivers provided. Install the Access Point utility on the same laptop and use it to configure the Access Point. The actual configuration uses a web browser, so it is very user friendly. Mine worked straight out of the box, but I went ahead and set up 128-bit encryption for security. That too was an exercise in simplicity.

Warranty
--------
Its warranted for a lifetime, compared to a year or two with the other products.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read the reviews and ignore the documentation
I originally rated it 5 stars with the following comments:

If you ignore the documentation and read the reviews, you'll have it up and running in 5 minutes or less. This is totally a plug & play solution. Plug your Access Point into your Router/Hub/Switch and power up the Access Point. Next plug the Wireless Card into your PCMCIA slot. Windows 95/98/etc. will prompt you for the drivers. Insert the drivers diskette (have your Windows CD handy). The system might reboot. Then you come up and you are connected to your LAN. Surf the web, send emails, knock yourself out. Great speed and range.

Now I have changed the rating to 3 stars because SMC technical support proved to be terrible. The minute I tried to configure the product I ran into problems. The provided software would not work. I tried it from four different workstations. I tried to contact SMC technical support. They never responded to three emails. Furthermore, I waited on hold for a total of over four hours on six different occations and never got to talk to a customer support representative.

I have since returned the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Easy to Install Wireless Network
This is a great piece of product. I ran into a little trouble installing it -- because I didn't read the manual first. I plugged the power into the access point before I plugged in the ethernet cable. So the adapter did not boot properly and I couldn't figure out why the pcmia card could not access the network.

So, make sure the the access point has both the green lights flashing before trying to connect.

The only problem I had with installing the pcmia card was some conflict the other (wired) ethernet adapter. I simply removed that one, rebooted, installed the drivers and it was done.

The range is unbelievable and the speed is super. For the price, and the easy configuration, this product is hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took 5 minutes to install, works like a charm
After browsing here and reading the reviews I had decided on this package for price reasons. I just received it today, and it took me exactly 7 minutes to install it. I already had a network with a DCHP server and a hub, so I just pulled the base station from the box and plugged it into my hub. They said it was "plug and play" so I did not even install the utility software to try to do any configuration.
I then popped the card into my laptop (windows 2000 professional) and installed the drivers from the floppy.
I did not even reboot the laptop, just ran "ipconfig /renew" to get a fresh ip address from the DCHP server and voila.
I'm now on the deck, about 100ft from the base station, going through 4 walls and I'm happily on the web writing this review.
It's beautiful, it's easy, it just works.
Buy this product, you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative
I purchased the EZ Connect Bundle on a whim. I have a home network that works fine at 100mb/s. However, I had recently purchased a laptop. One of the things you buy a laptop for is to be mobile, on-site and off-site. My network consisted of a Linksys BEFR41 DSL Router. I connected the access point to an empty port, installed the access point access software on to a win2000 server and as soon as I started the software it searched for access points. It found the SMC access point fine. However I could not access it. I noticed that the access point default ip address was 192.168.0.254. This will not work with the Linksys that has a default ip address of 192.168.1.1, because it was outside the subnet of my network. To get this to work, I went to the Linksys Router setup in my browser and changed the default ip to 192.168.1.1. Then I could access the access point. I then changed the access point ip to 192.168.1.254. Then went back to the Linksys and changed the ip back to 192.168.1.1. (I did this because I have nodes on my network that have static ip's.) Then I was off and running. The product works great. The ip thing is not SMC's fault they could not know your specific network architecture. I am very pleased with this product. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Firewall and NAT. Unreliable WiFi. Limited VPN
This router combo comes with a great firewall and NAT, but unfortunately suffers from very unreliable WiFi which disconnects regularly. The VPN would be great if only it did not time out all my connections after about 4 minutes. Also its limitation to 2 simulatenous PPTP tunnels is a bit on the low side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
Just for the 4-port router this product would be worth the price. With the added value of wireless access it is quite a steal. I had heard that the wireless end of this product was not very good, however I have had no problems with it. ... Read more
