3-0 out of 5 stars Okay But Not Okay
I bought this adapter to get a wireless connection for an old Windows XP Gateway desktop in my basement, thinking that the nice external antenna would help my odds.

PRO:

The card installed perfectly, connection comes up as "excellent" every time and I was into my network and Internet connection within 5 minutes. SMC has 24/7 toll-free tech support.

CON:
The drivers are not certified for Windows XP and the so-called setup utility crashes itself. It's in the "Add/Remove Programs" area but won't uninstall. Don't try to use the utility if using XP... allow XP to manage the network settings and you'll be fine. SMC even recommends it after calling them. The useless utility is there and I leave it alone and use XP to manage settings.

Bottom Line:

Decent wireless adapter if you're running "b" and it does great with my D-Link 614+ router but don't pay much for this adapter. It's worth $25-$30 but not the $58 that I paid for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work under BSD/Linux, config utility crashes Win2k
I bought this card for a FreeBSD box in my test lab at home because it is one of the few wireless PCI cards on the hardware compatibility list. So my surprise was complete when it arrived and I found that SMC had, like many other annoying vendors, changed the chipset and not mentioned that anywhere or changed the product number. So it didn't work in FBSD....

I decided to repartition that test boxes hard drive and install Win2k so as to get *some* use from this card while waiting for the BSD driver wizards to put something out. The card installs fine but then when I launch the configuration utility the box freezes completely and I have to manually power it off, then boot into safe mode and take the utility out of startup to avoid a cycle of freezes. SMC's web site was useless as there is no updated config utility; I couldn't even find the version that came with the card, leaving me to wonder what I would do if I lost the CD. I guess WinXP people could still use this card but I'm not upgrading my OS just so I can use this card.

My win2k box is service pack 4 with a million hotfixes, and there was no anti-virus or any other weird software on the box at the time (it was a test box!). This product is useless and I feel very much deceived by the chipset switch-a-roo. I will never buy SMC again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy set up, Great connection
A while back we baught a refurbished computer, which needed internet. We had my Apple laptop connected to our 'SMC Barricade 4-Port 11 Mbps Wireless Broadband Router' basestation by AirPort Xtreme card. Now my task was to connect the basestation to our other computer.

Installing Card: The hardest part was getting the case open! After that I screwed in the new card in a few seconds, put the case back on, and was ready to go.

Installing Software: I put the CD in, clicked a few times, and I was done. All I did is follow the on-screen instructions. After about 2 or 3 minutes I was getting a signal from the basestation.

This card is great! Extremely easy to install, and the connection is way faster than on my laptop. We have a steady, fast connection across the house and through a bunch of walls. A great card at a great value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to get the new firmware and patches
I got this PCI card because I got the SMC wireless router at the same time. I figured that the same brand name would make the WLAN work seamlessly. The installation of the card was very easy on my Dell Dimension 4550. After installation, the only problem I had with the card was the connectively problem that the previous reviewer spoke about. Then I went to the SMC website to download the fireware and patches for the WLAN monitoring software, it worked flawlessly.

Conclusion: With any hardware/software you buy, it's a good idea to install it and check to see if there are updates and security patches available.

1-0 out of 5 stars skip it
Set it up along with smc router. No connection from 15 feet away, one floor down. Got a connection with the netgear fm114p , though link quality was poor and barely adaquate speeds.

Check for pci cards with external antenna that can be positioned away from the body of the pc or pci cards with removable antenna, so that it can be upgraded with a higher gain antenna. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this.
SMCs 2670 bridge will configure ok if you use an SMC wireless router. Any attempt to use DHCP in any different way fails. Unfortunately, my attempt at using this with my ReplayTV with ethernet jack failed miserably. Get a D-Link or Linksys. SMC might have an improved version out by now, but stay away from this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Does *almost* everything I want
I bought this device about a year ago to hook up my TiVo to my wireless network. I had an SMC wireless router, so it seemed a logical fit. The performance was just "OK", but nothing to rave about.

A month ago, I upgraded my router to a Linksys WRT54G v2 router, and the change was amazing and immediate. All performance issues have vanished and were (obviously) due to the router signal and not the SMC2670W. Very happy now.

The only downside is with firmware upgrades... you (I) can't upgrade wirelessly so I was forced to remove the device (from TiVo) and upgrade it via a cross-connect cable attached to my host PC. This is no small feat, mind you, since the SMC2670W power supply is connected behind my entertainment center. SMC has not supplied a new FW update in a while, so hopefully this will not be an issue again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Infrastructure mode only
It's not immediately obvious that this device works only in 802.11b infrastructure mode. If you not using an access point, and are using 802.11b ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) mode, this device is useless.

You might also want to look at the Linksys WET11, which is very reliable and does not suffer this limitation.

2-0 out of 5 stars constantly loosing connection
I have an SMC network at home and I was very happy with it. I recently tried to connect my Xbox to the network. The first 2670 would loose connection after a few hours. I sent it back and replaced it with one that does the same thing only after a little longer. Since my laptop can get steady connection from virutally the same spot, it is not the location (I used the SMC 2632). Also the 2670 does not allow you to do MAC translation - for those who may need it for gaming beware. The only way to reboot is to unplug the freaky little cable at the back - which in my case is on top of the Xbox in a narrow shelf and it is not easily accessible.
Regarding their other masterpice, the 2435 cardbus adapter - I tried to replace the 2632 with the 2435 - DONT. The Wireless Manager does not detect the card. I saw a similar review on epinions.com and I did not believe the guy...well its true!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
I plugged it in, set it up with the web interface and had my SLIMP3 network MP3 player wireless in 5 minutes. It's small and reliable and has a power adaptor that doesn't take up more than one outlet. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Set it up in compaq notebook with XP system
First, you should install smc utility software. The driver files locate in the smc utility dir.(for example:C:\Program Files\SMC\SMC2635W Wireless Cardbus Adapter Utility\drivers\WINXP). You need locate it to windows installer so that XP could find hardware driver.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works well, but no WPA. Good tech support.
Unlike some others here and elsewhere, I've had great success with this card, which was inexpensive, easy to install, and worked fine immediately. I have a Version 2 card. However, in spite of the description here, in spite of the description on the box, and in spite of the description on the datasheet at SMC's site, this card does NOT support WPA. A driver update was supposed to have available (according to SMC literature) in Q2, 2004. But there is no such driver yet, and no one I've talked to at SMC will predict when it will be. So it this kind of security is important to you in the predictable future, choose another product.

On a plus note, the telephone support from SMC has been terrific. I would deal with this company again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP Home on a Compaq laptop
I can't get this PC Card to even be recognized as a network card on the Compaq. I tried sticking it in an old Toshiba laptop running Windows 98SE and it worked! The Compaq keeps looking for a network controller not an adapter. This may not be the fault of the card, but rather teh computer itself. Good luck if you buy one of these. Their tech support knew less than I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This is a great card, absolutely no problems. I'm running XP Pro and I haven't had any of the connection problems that others have mentioned. I can surf while streaming music for hours and never get disconnected. Easy install and was running in minutes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disconnect also occurs with XP Home
Some report that XP Home does not have a disconnect problem with this card. My experience of over a year's usage is that on a Toshiba laptop (Satellite 3005) with XP Home this card disconnects every ten or so minutes, then eventually (about 30-60 seconds later) reconnects without intervention. Because of this flaw it is frustrating and annoying to use this card; I do not recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs networking pro standing by!!!
Good for WiFi/Ethernet hoockup. Product is basic, compact-- one port. Everything seemed fairly easy until the documents would go to cue but not print. I eneded up on the phone with tech support (which was very responsive) for hours that, after exhausting every other caveat, told me that the problem was with getting the right IP from the print server. NOWHERE in the enclosed instruction or the CD-ROM manual is there a note of the little resessed button labeled "Diag" on the server which, once pressed, prints out the damn IP address. Once I had that, everything worked fine. So four stars for the product and tech support. BIG ZERO for the manual. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good at all
I am using SMC products since last 1.5 years,I was satisfied with all other SMC products, but not this.
Reason:
- Its just running @ 2MPBS speed, thought my router is supporting 11 MPBS.
- I called customer support, they are confuse too, asking all networking stuff to do again & again, but no luck. (SMC customer support is always better than N'gear & D'link)
- I dont know what to do with this 65 USD baby?
-also the size in the pictures look small, but its not real, size is larger than thumb drive.

Otherwise, i hv good exp. with SMC products only this makes me crazy, but thats OK ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!
Wireless networking is the coolest thing ever! After minimum configuration of the WAP I was sitting at my dining room table, wirelessly connected to the Internet with my laptop. I installed the WAP configuration utility on the desktop in my basement (running WindowsXP Pro), and got the same error as one of the other reviewers: this software only supported on NT, blah, blah, blah. But yet the utility actually did install, and worked perfectly, so I don't know what his problem was. Besides which, all configuration is done through a web browser anyway, and they give you the default IP in the manual.

If it weren't for the glitch in the software install I would have given this product five stars. Regardless though, this is still the best value for the money of any 802.11a access point on the market today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work on XP
The packaging, the manual, etc. all claim that this device is compatible with WIN XP. However, the configurator utility always stops during its install and says "This software will only run under Windows NT 4.0 and its derivatives", and then the install quits. Without the configurator installed, it's impossible to configure the device. I don't have an NT machine. Anyway, I thought XP was derived from NT...

A call to SMC informed me that technical support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - but the next voice told me they could not take my call just then, and their system hung up. That has happened three times.

There's no download at the SMC site for an updated configuration program -- unless it's very well hidden, and not on the page with the other downloads for this device, like a user's manual -- which I read in case it differed from the hardcopy that came with the access point itself, and it was the same.

I'm off to write SMC to inquire as to what exactly the deal is here. Somehow, I don't feel all that hopeful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Fast, and Usually Reliable
In our office, we have a network with this access point and four of the associated wireless cardbus adapters (SMC SMC2735W EZ Connect 802.11a). It is very fast and works great for most applications including accessing data and file server with no speed issues. Occasionally the most remote users loose their connection to the access point and that can be frustrating, but they are over 60 feet away and separated by three interior walls.
Is the extra speed necessary for internet access - no, but for heavier file and data sharing applications, it helps. The rated speed is 72 MBPS, but it does degrade over distance, through barriers, and during other random times.
We are happy with this network solution - it was easy to install and configure, and saved us the cost of installing a wired network in someone else's building. ... Read more
