Amazon.com Review

Versatile and attractive, Sherwood Newcastle's fully remote-controlledLyceum WA-240 executive microsystem is ideal for a stylish office or bedroom. Inour tests, we found that the Lyceum not only looks great, but it can alsofulfill most of your audio needs as an integrated amplifier with stereo FMtuner, CD, and single cassette deck. Additionally, it provides ampleconnectivity through a set of auxiliary inputs and a dedicated subwooferoutput.

The Lyceum looks luxurious and demands attention with its sleek and unusualdesign. The speaker grilles come in black, teal, or bright fuchsia (all areincluded in the box) and sit artfully off center on the unit, as does the CDdoor. The combination of polished silver and brushed metal gives this system avery "space age" feel.

At 4 inches deep, the surprisingly powerful two-way speakers can be convenientlyplaced on a desk or countertop without taking up too much room. The main unit, also a mere 4 inches deep, loads CDs vertically with an upward-gliding, finelytextured metal door to save space. All three pieces can be linked and wallmounted via sturdy metal rails (also included).

And the sound? Extremely impressive, given the narrowness of the speakers. Goodsound reproduction often comes down to speaker volume (in cubic inches),especially where authoritative bass is concerned. However, the Lyceum balancesdecent low-end presence with clear midrange and treble frequencies, making forvery pleasing listening.

Four surround sound effects are available: SRS, a 3-D effect; movie, to bechosen when coupled with your video source; simulated, for a concert-hall feel;and music, specifically for jazz. You can easily add asubwoofer as well as a videocomponent, such as a DVD or VHS player, using the stereo auxiliary input andoutput jacks. Keep in mind that these speakers are not magnetically shielded andneed to be placed a sufficient distance from your monitor or TV.

However, perhaps due to the speakers' space efficiency, we found that the sonicspectrum sounded slightly "squeezed" despite its good output power. Relative tohigher-volume traditional speakers, mid- to high-frequency instruments such aspercussion and electric guitar sound constricted, as if they need more space todeliver the performance as it was recorded. And the low end can be "boomy,"depending on your program material.

For those who still rely on cassettes for home replication, the Lyceum offers animpressive CD-to-cassette recording system. When you tell it the length of yourcassette, the Lyceum will program the CD tracks with the right spacing to avoidexcess blank tape at the head or tail of each side.

Although loading a CD vertically rather than placing it in a tray saves spaceand looks cool, we also found that it can be cumbersome. It felt like CDs couldaccidentally get scratched unless we took the time to carefully place each CD.Also, while the CD prepares to play, you hear a loud sound (like film advancingin a camera) that will likely grab your attention.

This system is outfitted with white, low-grade speaker wire that we founddifficult to hide, though it does blend with most walls better than black cable. It comes with a full-function remote control, which offers a set of hiddenbuttons that let you program your system with the confidence that your settingswill remain untouched.

We recommend the Lyceum for use in small to medium rooms, where its speakerswill impress both your eye and your ear. If you're looking to splurge a littleon a handsome, good-quality stereo system, the Lyceum would be one to seriouslyconsider. --Zoe Knight

4-0 out of 5 stars Great style, pretty good sound
If you want a stereo that you can display in the open without people thinking you're an electro-geek, then this might be the unit for you. Style is definitely its strong point, assuming you don't mind a decidedly contemporary look. Still, I was impressed by the sound quality of the Lyceum, especially considering the depth of the speakers. You won't get the deepest bass in the world, and the highs don't quite soar, but the sound is very decent nonetheless. Keep in mind that this unit is not meant to be an audiophile's dream box.

The cassette deck works quite well, with high speed synchro dubbing from CD to tape. Recording quality was quite good. A somewhat quirky thing is that there is no AM band on the tuner, only FM. This doesn't bother me, since I don't listen to AM, but there you go.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. When people visit, they always comment on how cool our stereo looks. I enjoy listening to it, and I thought the sound to style to price ratio was just right. I was looking at Nakamichi units that were very nice, but started at twice the price. This is a great alternative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good receiver for the money
This receiver definitely is a great addition to any home theatre system. For it's cost, I don't think you can find a better receiver. It produces clean, crisp sounds and can be installed with ease. It's simplicity and usability makes it a great receiver if you are looking to receive the most bang for your buck.

I will have to say, though, that this receiver does lack some options. It only has two DSP modes, no s-video jacks, limited a/v inputs (if you have numerous devices), par bass management, and a small front panel screen. In addition, even with the Dynamic Range control, this receiver works best when played at high volumes. I have had some difficulty producing quality sounds at low volumes.

This is a very well built receiver that takes into account that most people will not fuss over the options that I listed. For it's price, who can complain, and realistically, nobody should. I am very pleased with its performance and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend over...

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This is the best receiver for the money i have ever seen.....i ran some tests and found that this receiver was better than a 500 dollar [competitor]! BUY THIS ITEM!!! ITS AWESOME

4-0 out of 5 stars Good machine, Bad interface
This reciever works very well. It makes my speakers sound pretty good, and it was not very hard to set up (considering the complexity of my sound system.) My only problem with it was its tiny screen. The screen just dosn't give enough information, and therefor I had to use the instructions a lot while I was learning how to use it. It is a very good value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
I was looking for an entry level DTS reciever. This one works great. The 5.1 outputs are a plus as is the display dimming feature.

5-0 out of 5 stars great sound
