5-0 out of 5 stars The Sherwood CD-7080R Single CD Player
I bought mine at Buy.com for $176, and the retail price is $340. As a CD player it sounds better than my TEAC CD recorder and my Sony DVD player (CDP-NS725). The Sherwood also has many features and a good remote. I have been into audio since the mid 70s and worked at a local stereo store in New Orleans during most of the 80s. This CD player is a steal! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars SHERWOOD RVD-8090R
Warning this is a high end unit 105 watts per channel, 6.1 channel but does not have speaker switching.A/B I have an extra pair of speakers in my patio and this unit has only has 1 main front speaker unit hook. Now I have to figure out how I can use my outdoor speakers!

Also, no phono hook up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best bang for your buck!
I replaced my old sony and aiwa surround systems with this sherwood and it's like I never had surround before. My old systems cost 5 times as much as this sherwood but don't even compare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing?
Before you buy any home theater receiver be sure to compare the specifications and features of this Sherwood. I hve to tell you that if you were able to do side by side comparisons with the Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha, Denon and Harman Kardon as I have using the same speakers and room you would ask yourself why pay for anything else. ... Looking for a inexpensive yet great sounding surrond receiver? This is it! Just enough bells and whistles that makes it useful, but not too much that won't be used or confusing to use. Does the job and does it well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great receiver!
I got the Sherwood rd8108(I don't know why Amazon says "AMC") becuase it has s-video switching(no component), universal remote, and OSD, and all the latest surround modes. It also has auto digital source detection for easy switching between digital devices. Sound is awesome; better channel separation and balance than my old HK AVR75. It's easy to hear dialog from the center and effects from the surround. I am finally hearing what my speakers are capable of!

Problems:
-Remote is universal, but doesn't control many features on other devices and is not back-lit
-Some DSP's are not so good
-Clip speaker jacks
-A bit difficult to set up, and so many surround modes it's dificult to know what to pick ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For almost nuthin...
Having used some of Sherwood's other DD receivers in the past, I thought I'd check out the 7100 due to the value Sherwood offers. This one doesn't have the EX, DPL II or Neo 6 but it does however have a very natural Dolby Virtual mode, something that could benefit someone who does not have surround or center channel speakers. There are 2 ambience modes, Theater and Hall which are surprisingly good, much better than the boingy ones in the 7108, which I also own. The 7108 with the newer center back channel amp does have the ability to decode 3 rear channels, though (see other products used). In a plain Pro Logic setup the sound in the 7100 is very enveloping and natural, even with my rather inefficient PSB Mini's. Just for the fun of it, I substituted set of Wharfedale Diamond 7.2's and the receiver really made these modest speakers croon, and generates enough power for all channels in an average size room. This receiver is perfect for someone interested in a easy-to-operate unit and it has all one needs for a good sounding 5 channel home theater system.

Strengths:
Price - These have been selling for around $110 incl. shipping on Ubid.
Sound quality - has the 24 Bit Yamaha YSS-912 decoder chip. Another very nice feature with the '7100 is that it allows the user to set different volume and channel levels for each surround mode. Let's say that you're listening to a CD and you want to change from Pro-Logic to Hall mode and the Hall mode has too much volume in the rear channels. When the rear channel levels are lowered for this mode this Sherwood will remember the last set Pro-Logic parameters.

Weaknesses:
Slight buzz from the center speaker when the TV is on. Still troubleshooting this, could be the TV.

Similar Products Used:
RD-6108: (DPL II) This one has 2 very usable settings in Dolby Virtual, Narrow and Wide. Also a very nice buy for around the same price.

RD-7108 Good choice for an entry-level EX, Neo 6 setup, but priced at close to the $200 mark, still a good deal. One nice feature with this one is the ability to change the speaker configuration with the remote. (Center, Rears On/Off, Large/Small, etc.) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This fine AV receiver sounds excellent with both two-channel and 5.1-channel surround sources. In addition, its outstanding array of inputs and outputs will satisfy all but the most exotic system needs.

We were immediately impressed by Sherwood's dedication to performance. For example, all amplifier stages in the RVD-9090R are discrete, and the sturdy, binding-post speaker terminals accept heavy-gauge wire, unlike the wire-clip connectors found on many affordable surround receivers. Sherwood also provides both 5.1-channel analog inputs and preamplifier outputs, which means that you can feed the receiver from an external surround processor or even upgrade to a larger amplifier if future needs demand it. We also liked the RVD-9090R's multisource S-video switching capability.

Setting up and using the RVD-9090R was a joy. Thanks to Sherwood's clean front-panel layout, OSD (onscreen display), and excellent owner's manual, we were able to get the RVD-9090R up and running in no time.

The care that Sherwood has lavished on this unit really pays off in its performance. Stereo music sources sound outstanding, taking on an open, uncompressed quality we normally associate with the sound from separates (i.e., a separate preamplifier and amplifier). The RVD-9090R exhibits richly layered harmonics, a terrific sense of depth and image placement, and power to spare. This was evident when we put the RVD-9090R through its paces with our favorite DVDs; it never sounded strained or forced, no matter how complex or dynamic the soundtrack. Likewise, a few of our DTS-encoded discs of both music and movies were simply terrific over this receiver.

There's no doubt that the Sherwood RVD-9090R is one of the finest receivers we've evaluated, and at this price it represents outstanding value.

Pros:

  • Excellent sound
  • Excellent build quality
  • S-video switching
  • Plenty of inputs and outputs

Cons:

  • No phono input

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding value
As a basic A/V receiver, you will not find a better value. With 105 watts x 5 channels, Dolby Digital decoding, 6 channel inputs, 4 digital audio inputs, pre-amp outputs, and 5-way binding posts, the Sherwood has features that let you enjoy music and home theater now and well into the future. It is more than capable of doing anything from providing natual, clean stereo music to decoding the digital surround sound from DVD/satellite dish/digital cable to handling 6 decoded channels from a surround format yet to be developed. Amazon rightly lists the lack of S-video switching as a disappointment, but creative wiring can easily work around it. In short, if you want to spend $1000 for a A/V reciever, there are many better options available. But for less than $300, one would be lucky to find a reciever with even one of the Sherwood's many high-end features that sounds even remotely as good as this receiver does. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Problems w/ RD-7106 but good support from Sherwood
After dealing with mounting problems with this unit for months I called Sherwood tech support and received excellent service. Sherwood offers alot for a good price when it comes to their multimedia receivers. I'd definately buy from them again.

1-0 out of 5 stars this reciever is [not good]
I have had nothing but problems with this reciever - I read lots of good reviews before I bought it but now regret that I did. It has been 1 thing wrong after the other and the quality is not really any better than my old Kenwood KR-A46 which doesn't have surround sound capabilities or any of the features that made the Sherwood so appealing.

4-0 out of 5 stars good no frills receiver
Overall this receiver turned out to be a very good buy. It has just about all that is needed to get started on your home theater system and then some. It doesnt have all the bells and whistles but then again it doesnt cost the extra bells and whistles either. The ins and outs are adequate for most home theater systems. I like the fact that this receiver has a tape monitor input---lets you listen and fine-tune your tape recording if you wish. I just use it to hook up my EQ so I can easily enable or disable my EQ simply by enabling/disabling the tape monitor. It also has an on-screen display so you can easily set it up via a TV and not by using those terrible LCD displays on the front of receivers. It has S-video switching--nice feature on a low cost receiver, 5.1 channel direct pre-inputa, and pre-outs for all channels. These last 4 features are very difficult to find in lower cost receivers. There are a limited amount of DSP settings and they aren't adjustable but these DSP's never sound correct to me in any case so I never use them (except Dolby Digital, DTS, Pro Logic of course). There's speaker delay for surround format and speaker level for each channel.
There's only one gripe that I can think of at this time and it is that you have to turn on your TV on to set up certain parameters of the receiver that should really just be a simple push of a button to enable/disable the parameter. It's just my preference that way. Also, some might be confused at the way the buttons work. A lot of the buttons are multi-purpose. For example: pressing the Audio button cycles through the different audio inputs instead of having a single button for CD, a single one for Tuner, DVD, etc. The tuning and memorization of radio stations can be a little tricky if you don't disable auto memory scan.
Other than these small gripes (which shouldn't be too big a deal) the receiver sounds just fine with no added character of its own---just the way a receiver should sound. All in all this receiver has a lot of bang for the buck and you can't go wrong for a receiver this price. You'll definitely get more options than any other receiver I know of in this price range. I give it 4 1/2 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Clean Sounding, Well Designed - Terrible Remote!
First of all - I'm very picky on stereo equipment and have owned higher end separates. That ruled out a lot of "mushy sounding" and "all show - no go" units. I like this unit a lot and recommend it at least in my pre-amp only setup. Its very easy to run and lacks frills but works excellently.

If you value a good remote, look elsewhere. I knew going in these receiver remotes were not what I wanted so it didn't bother me. I'm going to buy a aftermarket remote. The sherwood remote doesn't control anything but sherwood stuff, so its pretty dang limited. But you can get a learning remote at wallmart for $15 so don't get too put out. I did find the remote useful side angles a bit limited compared to my VCR.

My system: Polk 12a Ref Monitors main Polk cs300 center crappy surrounds no sub Carver 5 channel 125x5 power amp DSS receiver w/optical out

Now that the bad news is out of the way, let me gush about this unit. I tried a Pioneer Elite THX certified receiver, but found that it sounded pretty terrible on stereo music. I took that one back. After much searching for a DTS/5.1 capable receiver that had pre-outs for my amp, I found this gem. It has 4 digital inputs, and full Svideo switching. The pushbutton source selector is better than the dials that many use, so you can go fairly directly to your source - although CD and FM are on the same button and requires a second push. The receiver does a lot of work for you, it automatically switches to prologic when I go to video, and to stereo on FM or CD. When I tune in a 5.1 movie channel, the thing switches automatically. I hardly have to mess with it. Oh yea, and the on screen display of everything is neat, that comes with the video out.

One other feature to mention is the bass management, which lets you use the sub with music on the stereo even with big speakers. Try that with a Sony or other unit. That is a big plus, although I have yet to buy a sub with my huge polk reference monitors and power from Carver doing pretty decent job.

The radio reception is adequate, about avg but a step down from my carver 2 channel rig with Shotz circuitry. The station tuning was awkward with having to page through presets instead of selecting them from a bank of buttons like many do. But since I listen to mainly 3 stations it was not a big deal.

The circle surround feature is also pretty cool for like parties where you want music out of all channels. Again, not found on many other units. The other echo surround effect modes I have no use for but seemed typical.

Besides the remote what's really weak? Well, I hate the new style volumes where you have to turn it about 3 times to get the volume to go up a lot, but besides that its a GREAT little receiver and a big bargin, lots of features.

I can't comment on thg amp sound, as I use a separate amp, I can guess that its probably not a barn burner but if you get efficient speakers you should be ok. And you can upgrade front channels to a separate amp with the pre-outs if you wanted to later.

The "sound" of the receiver is very neutral as it should be, and I found bass and vocals all well balanced. No, you won't trade a high end preamp for this unit but it is amazingly clear and well behaved across the entire sound spectrum. Many receivers seem to have bass that sounds weak and distorted, even through my aftermarket amp. Yes, I did back to back comparisons with the Pioneer and it sounded like a 50 watt 70's receiver, where the Sherwood didn't crimp the low end much at all.

I got mine for $299 at buy.com before they were carried here, and it is a great deal for that cash.

Long warrenty is excellent too!

Good luck ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid value receiver
This is actually the third Sherwood receiver that we have bought. We bought an entry level Dolby Pro-logic home theater package, with the 4050r receiver. This receiver is definitely a cut above the older one. This one has much better push through the high and low ranges than our old one. Even without a digital source, the clarity from the receiver is excellent. For an entry-level digital receiver for someone on a budget, I believe this receiver would be an excellent choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sherwood RVD6095 Surround Receiver Tremendous Value
This surround receiver is a tremendous value for what you receive - both Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built-in, numerous functionality available only on more expensive receivers, etc. Its lower power (60 watts per channel) makes it most suited to smaller home theater speaker systems (I have the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble IV). The receiver also does not offer S-video out. The RVD6095R is a great receiver value and has all of the features of its highly rated sibling, the RVD6090R. I highly recommend it for those wanting a highly versatile home theater receiver but who don't want to spend a lot or those who have smaller speakers to be driven by it. ... Read more
