Amazon.com Product Description

Sherwood's incredibly affordable RX-4105 offers integrated preamplification and amplification, inputs for numerous audio source components, and advanced radio tuning and station access. The receiver delivers 100 watts RMS per channel x 2 for strong, clear sound across the audible spectrum--even at low listening levels. The company has lowered the amplifier's distortion relative to the previous model (the RX-4105), to less than 0.08 percent, while also giving the receiver a new layout borrowed from its higher-end components.

The RX-4105 uses totally discrete amplifiers for all channels (TDAS) to maintain its high power and low distortion. Use the receiver's A and B clip-type speaker outputs to power 2 different rooms, or to biwire a pair of speakers for more efficient amplification (with A outputs driving the woofers, for instance, and the B outputs driving the tweeters--make sure your speakers are compatible if this is a key feature for you).

The receiver also offers a handy 25-key remote control and switching for 2 pair of loudspeakers. Audio inputs switch between and amplify up to 4 additional components, including 2 requiring both inputs and outputs (such as a cassette deck and a VCR). The built-in AM/FM tuner features 30 station presets and auto station setup.

Other features include bass and treble tone controls, a dimmable fluorescent display, and a .25-inch headphone jack for private listening.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sherwood Newcastle CD-980T single-disc component CD player uses dual 20-bit hand-selected Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters with 8x oversampling. There's a .25-inch headphone output with dedicated headphone volume control (many CD players sport headphone jacks but no volume control) and a snazzy fluorescent display with a dimmer so you won't be distracted during focused, lights-off listening. The display's music calendar graphically reveals your listening location in the context of a given disc (up to 19 tracks in view).

CD-specific features include pitch control, 20-track sequencing, a delete-play option (which frees you from prorgamming 12 songs in near sequence just to skip a thirteenth), intro scan, repeat play, and random play. Two other features greatly simplify recording: CD sync record, which automates playback initiation when used with a Sherwood cassette recorder, and tape edit/size adjustment, which automatically sequences a given CD for optimal timing for cassette recording.

One each optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs facilitates hookup with a CD or minidisc recorder or a surround receiver, and a standard stereo analog (left/right) RCA output affords easy hookups with other equipment. All terminals use highly conductive, minimally corrosive gold-plated jacks.

This player can be remotely controlled with Sherwood Digi-Link III amplifier or receiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, better then the JVC and Pioneer
Excellent, better then the JVC and Pioneer I had before and less money too. Buy this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars 5 Audio Inputs...But not for your Phonograph
This Amplifier is worth the $100. Although the specs claim to have 5 Audio Inputs...Including a TV/AUX, You will need to Purchase a Pre-Amplifier if you plan to use a TurnTable.
The Amp I was replacing was OLD...Before Remotes...and had a Max Output of 50 Watts Per Channel...But the Phonograph was Plug and Play. In today's world, CD's have virtually replaced Albumns, so it is no longer necessary to have a pre-amp for the majority of purchasers...but if Customer Service had informed me when I called for advise, I would not have waited 2 weeks thinking I had an Unreturnable(Received for Christmas...30 Day Return Policy...Mother purchased in Nov.)Unit which would not serve my needs.
The Pre-Amp is available from Phonopreamps.com for about $27.00.
After all was said and Done I had around over $150.00 invested.
Also, like the new Gasolines...I don't think Watts are graded the same today because it seems the 50 WPC unit I replaced had more BOTTOM than this Unit.
Adult Child Of the 70's...Vinyl Forever!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars modern-day stereo mediocrity
Sound quality okay; generally clean good for background music and ambient audio when hooked up to video system. Power good, but lack of decent tone controls limits musical enjoyment, however. Typical of many new-age units, the lack of [meaningful] bass/treble controls make it hard to tailor the sound to any environment. There are only five settings each, and they provide minimum boost over a very limited spectrum. This is why they invented equalizers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay...I've only had it ONE day...
BUT I LOVE THIS THING!! For less than $..., I got an entertainment hub that can handle VCR, cassette tape, DVD and CD players, along with AM and FM tuner, 105 watts a channel and a great name from hi-fi's past to boot! The lush, spatial stereo this unit provides will probably have me buying Sherwood amplifiers, preamps or receivers until some Japanese or Dutch electronics giant buys them up, (if they haven't already!)

Remote control, tonal adjustments from across the room, etc., etc.....you can't ask for more than that for $...!! There's even a provision for surround sound!

In the sixities and seventies, Sherwood equipment always did have a great reputation, and they were never expensive, either. I guess they're carrying that tradition into the 21st century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS RECEIVER!
You can pay a lot more for other brands and end up with a piece of junk. I paid about 3 times as much for first (big name) receiver and it blew out after about a year. This thing was a third of the price and puts most other low-end units to shame. It has some awesome features and sounds great. Sherwood somehow manages to make top-of-the-line stuff for ridiculously low prices. I will definitely replace the rest of my components with Sherwoods next time they go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Value
This unit has the best feature/price ratio I have found! DD&DTS, 3 Digital imputs for this price! And it sounds good. Best entry-level receiver I have found. Very easy to set-up,good remote, easy to make running adjustments. Worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
I wasn't in the position to spend a lot on a home theater receiver right now, but had read a lot of good print on Sherwood. I've been impressed with the level of features and performance of the 7103, especially for the money. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and does a nice job for our modest home theater. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Just average
This is an OK 2 channel reciever, however, the KLH R-3100, which is also 100 watts per channel, seems to have much better audio quality for about the same price.

1-0 out of 5 stars static equipment damage hazzard
My receiver worked fine until I started adjustng the FM wire loop antenna. One end of the 'T' touched the TV screen, where static electricity is always present to some degree. I heard a small snap sound, like when my hand touches the screen (no current so it is not hazzardous to your health), and the receiver stopped receiving the station I was tuned to, and from there on only picked up one station. Not only that, but my directv RCA receiver box to which the receiver is connected via audio cables failed and I had to buy another one, along with returning this receiver for a replacement. Considerng other reviews here, I would dinitely not recommend buying this receiver, even if the price is low.

3-0 out of 5 stars Competent
Unless you are an audiophile,I believe this is an excellent receiver. True, it is very basic, but for the price you can't beat it. I wish it had an AC plugin in the back and a reverse speaker phase button.

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly dangerous product - be careful
This product sounded very good, and had some nice features like
an easy to use remote. But, within a week it had shorted out and
destroyed two speaker systems. Loud explosion in house, smell of
burning circuitry. Obviously, no output protection circuits. I am trying to get through to Sherwood, but they have not responded to phone calls or e-mails for almost two weeks and I am preparing to take my complaint to appropriate consumer protection agencies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware -- could turn out to be very expensive
This product worked well for a week - nice remote, decent set of inputs -- and then it short circuited and blew out my JBL and Infinity speaker systems. The blow-out occurred at a time when the receiver was powered on, but in a low volume state and not being used. The short circuiting was accompanied by a jackhammer-like sound in my living room, and a burning smell. Obviously it did not have output circuit breakers to protect speakers -- a common feature on receivers.

I have had no success in contacting the manufacturer via its customer service telephone or e-mail to see if I can be compensated for the damage done. As a long time audio user and Sherwood customer, I would have to say that one takes a real risk in using this product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Surround-sound systems don't amount to much without a quality receiver, and this Sherwood 5.1-channel model plays the role perfectly. Equipped with Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS decoding, the receiver breathes life into home theater audio, delivering spectacularly clear sound that fills up a room. The decoded formats are complemented by Cinema EQ, a process that reduces the brightness of movie soundtracks to give them a more pleasing tone, along with Dynamic Range Control, which increases range sensitivity to better distinguish between loud and soft sounds.

The receiver runs discretely at 500 watts of total power (100 watts x 5 in surround mode, 100 watts x 2 in stereo mode) and features four digital sound processing options (theater, hall, stadium, and concert) for simulating specific acoustic environments. Radio listeners will be delighted with the AM/FM tuner, which includes 30 channel presets. Other features include source memory, a subwoofer preamp output, a sleep timer, system illumination, and a comprehensive remote control.

Components attach to the unit through the two coaxial and one optical digital inputs, three AV inputs, four audio inputs, front panel AV input, and the headphone jack, in addition to the multichannel direct input and subwoofer pre-out. The RD-6108 carries a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bargain-priced home theater receiver
I purchased two of these units and am using one of them in my current system. For the price, the sound and operation is very good. The remote codes programmed easily into my DSS receiver remote control, making for a very easy system to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah it's great but not perfect.
I give it 5 stars because it's gives great sound and features for your money.

Let me just start out by saying. Dolby did good with DPLII. I can't live without it now. I listen to near enough everything that's not DD or DTS with DPLII on. Wonderful!

OK onto the niggly bits that make this imperfect. The remote could be better and have some more options. It's annoying not being able to adjust things like bass and treble from the remote.

Inputs and outputs are a bit weird. I was used to my old Sherwood 925's ins and outs. The 6108 you have to kinda fiddle with shared ins and stuff. It's not as straighforward layout as the 925 was.

The sound. Sometimes you can hear very low level hum. This is more pronounced if you have PCM signals being sent (As I do from an optical CD deck). What happens is that when a track finishes and there is a silent spot, the reciever stops any and all sound. This can sometime make for an audible click as the sound (and that very low level hum) cuts out for a moment. I've gone back to analog from the CD deck because of it. Not ideal.

The DSP's I hate (Other than DPLII of course). I wish they would drop them. It's a pain having to keep pressing the DSP button again and again to get past those stupid 'church' 'hall' modes to change from DPLII Music to DPLI and DPLII.

OK those are my niggles just to show that the reciever is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. Other than that it's fantastic for the price and kicks my old speakers into overdrive!

Oh and to the dude who was having problems. Yes it does do Dolby Pro Logic. The sound is also great. You need to check you have some decent speakers and READ THE MANUAL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the cheap price fool you.
I own an Onkyo TX-SV646 & a Yamaha R-V905 A/V Receiver. The Onkyo is a Pro Logic Receiver only. The Yamaha has Dolby® Digital & Pro Logic. No DTS or Pro Logic II. I bought the Sherwood RD-6108 that has Dolby® Digital,DTS & Pro Logic II... The sound quality is just as good as the 2 high-ends that I own. I can't believe it!! I use small JBL speaker in my bedroom with an 8"JBL POWERED sub. The Sherwood has a nice natural sound coming out of the JBL's. Amazing how clean it is!!
Sherwood is a brand to reckon with. The remote is [weak],but I bought a Sony RM-VL900 remote. This remote is truly amazing. It is smarter than the human brain! I think it's a great buy. NOW,Back to the Sherwood, I really love having Pro Logic II & DTS.Pro Logic II & DTS are amazing!! I watched Pearl Harbor & Planet of the Apes in DTS & both sound AWESOME!!!! This Sherwood sounds better than my Yamaha 905(with Pro Logic II & DTS). My PS2 is my DVD player & it never sounded better. I soon will get a REAL DVD PLAYER,but for now it will work fine.
Next for me to buy is a nice JVC 20 inch I'Art.

People you must read to set it up right. I think it was EZ.

This unit is like a baby HK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for a DD5.1 and DTS Receiver
This is my first home theater receiver that I ever owned and I'm totally pleased with it. I did do some homework to see what kind of reviews its received and most reviews at circuitcity.com and avsforums.com have been good/great.

I had no problems playing DTS movies through the receiver, Gladiator sounded awesome as did the Superbit version of Panic Room.

I had circuit city 110% pricematch a local chain store that was selling this model for less ...

4-0 out of 5 stars question about the rd 6108?
I have this unit set up in my son's room with his ps2 connected to the digital optical input. It sounds pretty good when playing games but sounds horrible when playing dvd's. I want to know if this unit has a dolby decoder on board and I can't get a straight answer from anyone. I know it says DTS and dolby surround but is this the old trick of claiming to be able to play these formats only if the dvd player has a decoder??? i have asked circuit city and they can't answer??? can anybody prove this??? thanks ... Amazon.com Product Description

Brilliant, accurate sound is a hallmark of the Sherwood RD-7108 A/V receiver. This high-end component features a sophisticated crystal 24-bit digital processor that allows you to create optimal sound and atmosphere in your home theater. It features a sizeable array of surround modes that ensure you find the right sound for the right situation, and it's configured for 6.1-channel direct input and compatible with 5.1-channel formats as well.

The receiver runs the DTS-ES Extended Surround signal format that creates an improved 360-degree surround-sound impression. Two DTS-ES formats are available: discrete and matrix. The DTS Neo:6 decoder makes adjustments based on the audio source. By selecting the cinema setting, the decoder recreates the intended audio atmosphere. The music setting bypasses the decoder to ensure no loss of sound quality in the front speakers while naturally expanding the sound field in the surround speakers. The Dolby Pro Logic II format further enhances the quality and the emphasis of the sound, with movie and music settings, along with the ability to create a customized sound.

You can get great home theater sound with just two speakers or even headphones. The RD-7108 can translate digital signals into a surround-sound experience. That experience is boosted by three DSP preset modes (theater, hall, and matrix) that allow you to experience a surround effect with any combination of speakers.

With the RD-7108's automatic format detection feature, the receiver will adjust the surround sound settings, based on the incoming digital signal. You can always manually adjust and customize the settings as well. The speaker setup feature allows you to customize the configuration of your speakers, both by size and by location within the room. With the easy setup, you can quickly optimize your audio experience.

The built-in AM/FM tuner features quartz synthesized digital tuning and 30 station presets. For late-night listening, the receiver’s dynamic range control can lower the sound without lowering the sound quality, and a sleep timer will shut down the system for you.

The Digi-Link III remote control allows you to control other audio and video components. When you use it with other Sherwood audio and video equipment, you'll enjoy easy, one-touch operation.

The RD-7108 provides 100 watts per channel in both stereo and surround modes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save $$ from the tech "trickle down" effect
RD-7108 Good choice for an entry-level EX, Neo 6 setup, but priced at close to the $200 mark, still a good deal. One nice feature with this one is the ability to change the speaker configuration with the remote. (Center, Rears On/Off, Large/Small, etc.) Dolby 'Virtual' stinks on this model as well as most of the other DSP settings. The DTS ES, Neo:6 and the Dolby Pro-Logic II work very well however. Also Sound and Vision reviewed this receiver. See Sherwood's website at sherwoodamerica.com for a link to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's great!..for the money
I just bought this receiver because it was the cheapest receiver available with Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES 6.1 and I have to say it's Great! I had read a good review from a reputable home theatre magazine so it just pushed my decison further. Don't let the name brand fool you, I have owned sherwood receivers in the past, and these things won't die! They're still kicking and they sound great even today. Highly Reliable.

This receiver is 600 watts and it has A LOT of power, I was really surprised, each speaker can be adjusted to be very loud. On my past receivers, I had a problem with not enough voice/center. Not here my friend, I can have dialog blasting in my face now while the other speakers are doing their duty.

6.1 surround sound DTS ES is sweet! I'm not too impressed with Dolby Digital EX but it does still sound good. If you're gonna listen to regular 2 channel audio, switch the receiver to NEO 6:Cinema, It sounds awesome! I can't believe the separation it was able to get in all 6 speakers from just a normal audio cd.

The only bad thing I found on this receiver is that there is a 1 second delay from when it senses the optical input and when it starts to output the sound. For Example: you are playing a DVD and it's on the main menu. The menu is playing music waiting for your choice. you decide to go to scene select. you select your choice and your dvd player has to access a different chapter to display the screen and new music so the optical output stops for a second while it goes to a new chapter to play. During this second, the receiver senses that the signal has stopped and is now searching for another signal. When the DVD player finally resumes the output, the receiver senses it and starts it back up but it has now been 1 second. 1 second of music that you missed because the receiver had to sense and engage the right input.

I don't know, to me that's moderately annoying. I suspect it is because 1 video input on the receiver can be a total of 3 types, composite, coax,or optical. It searches for one. They would have did better with a dedicated port and input.

Overall though, you can't beat the price. DD-EX and DTS-ES, Lots of power, Great sound modes, High Reliablity.

Oh yeah, don't even think about using this as a Video receiver because I heard there are no menus for anything and there isn't a single S-video jack on it, only composite. Not sure about component but I doubt it. Dedicated sherwood remote is not universal for other components. It's really a bare-bones receiver but Man!, it sounds good! ... Read more
