3-0 out of 5 stars seiko world travel alarm
Some what disappointed with the size.Great for a woman's touch, but as a gift for my fiancee, he found the key display almost to small to see and also touch. The seiko travel alarm offers a lot of functions (clock display, calculator, address directory, memo & bookmark and also a back light display. But i could never get the password protection code to work,I would have preferred the password protection over the other function which did work..

3-0 out of 5 stars A good device for a test-taker!
This is a good machine if you want to use it to increase your vocabularies especially for anyone who is going to take SAT because it contains a lot of tests like analogies, synonyms, antonyms, etc. It's very boring if you have to use flashcards or do the tests in the books or even on computer all the time. You can carry this one with you and play with it on the way to school or any where. However, it is a bad electronic dictionary because it doesn't contain a lot of vocabularies. So it really depends on your purposes. If you want to have a decent pocket-electronic dictionary, I recommend you to look for "bookman from franklin" instead. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars hopelessly limited
The Seiko dictionaries have gone down in price everywhere. That's because of the new Franklins with the Bookman cards. You can't expand this dictionary in any way. It has more functions, but they're not very useful (how often do you need to know your shirt size in Spain?). It's better than nothing, but not too much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better for a student than a well-read adult.
I was told this product had over 200,000 words. When I got it, I found out that meant 80,000 definitions...the rest of the word-count was in the thesaurus, etc. There's a big difference between an 80,000-word dictionary and a 200,000-word dictionary! Information about the product needs to differentiate between "words" and defined words! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 220,000 words?
The advertized 220,000 words impressed me to buy but every word I don't know, this dictionary doesn't know. The last two words that come to mind are; eponymous and recrudescense. If I had thought to make a list, it would probably recognize one out of five entries. Someone should create a dictionary that eliminates simple words in order to make room for words that someone fluent in English would normally have to look up. For example, this would eliminate words like, chair, house, etc. to make room for a more effective list.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it, I love it, I want somemore of it!
I love my talking dictionary! I've had it for over a year. It is great when reading novels or when double checking pronunciation. Some words I think should be common are not in the dic. Of course, if they were so common then I should know what they mean. lol. I am ready to upgrade to a talking dictionary with more word capacity. One thing not mentioned is the helpful SAT option. There are limited words in this section, but it does help one know how to use unknown words in context. Overall- Well worth the money if you use it as mush as I do! I'd buy it again in a heart-beat if it cost under $100. Oh, and I did I mention it has games too- A little antiquated. But if you're board and it's great.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best dictionary
Well this is a really outstandig dictionary. I can find in it almost any word I want. It has been extremely useful, I recommend it to you all.

3-0 out of 5 stars painfully slow
I have been using it for just one day, and found several problems:

1. The dictionary is painfully slow. It takes about 10 seconds to find a word, and, if you spell the word wrong and choose to do the spell check, it takes about at least 40 seconds.

2. It seems that you cannot find some some obvious words, such as Chicago, omnidirectional, cutesy.

3. Sometimes the voice does not match the pronunciation marked in phonetic symbols. For example, for the word traverse, the voice put the intonation on the first syllable while the phonetic symbols put it on the second.

I like this product very much.It has a high resolution display, much better than Franklin series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gadget
I'm an English-second-language instructor, and one of my students bought a reading pen so she could efficiently get word definitions and pronunications.

The pen works fine, but in learning to use it, rely on your own experimenting more than by reading the owner's manual. One trick I accidentally figured out (that is not described in the manual) gets the pen to read an entire sentence without the need for your prompts between each word. Here's how to do it: 1) have the pen read the sentence from right to left, 2) press ESC, 3) press left arrow key.

It's a fun product, and seems to work reliably so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reader from Missouri
I do not have the speaking version of this device, so I cannot comment on it, however I do have the basic dictionary version, and I find it delightful.

I have always kept a pocket dictionary next to my bed, where I do much of my reading. It is useful, but the tiny print is starting to get to me, and with some books I spent more time in the dictionary than with the book. Not anymore.

The Seiko Quicktionary allows me to to look up a word in seconds with a quick swipe, much as you would use a highlighter. I'm amazed that other reviewers complain about its ease of use--it took me about 15 seconds to master, and if you need more than that it has a built in tutorial. If that's not enough, there are written instructions and a videotape!

The lookup is very quick, and the dictionary comprehensive. I tested it on a variety of archaic and foreign terms, and it seldom stalled. The optical character recognition is versatile and accurate. If it can't read it, you probably did a poor job of scanning. And you have the option of scanning letters in off of the bar codes on the handy case, or punching them in with the little buttons.

Its small size means you can take it anywhere, and with the automatic shutoff the batteries seem to last forever. I'm still on the first pair after months of use.

It is still priced a bit steep, but if you can afford it, and you read a lot, you will use it all the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful word-recognition device for some student groups
I purchased the Reading Pen as a gift for a Shanghainese advanced student of English, but couldn't resist an extended tryout before sending it to China. As a device that makes the complete transition from the printed page to the pronounced word, and then to simple, easily-understood dictionary definitions, the pen is an ideal product for someone learning English who starts from a very different native language and writing system. Another potential audience would be individuals with dyslexis, since phoneme recognition is accomplished accurately. The pen recognized a variety of fonts and type sizes, including all-caps and italic, but was less accurate in reading hand-lettering. It required repeated attempts at recognition for about 10% of words, but second attempts were usually successful. I found it easy to learn to use (I never did view or listen to the instructions). Use of the pen does require a bit of patience and manual dexterity, but motivated users should be able to overcome this. The vocabulary seems large enough--I didn't encounter any words it didn't recognize, though admittedly I didn't turn it loose on William Buckley. Improvements I would recommend include increasing the speed of word recognition (this would be great for older students with dyslexia who would use it as a reading aid) and if possible, making it easier to scan (so young children could use it).

2-0 out of 5 stars Great idea but not ready yet for real use
I wonder why the manufacturer sells something that obviously is not ready for market. The product is overpriced, difficult to use, and about as accurate as voice-recognition software. ... Read more

It worths for the dollars. It helps my kid to improve his vocabuary .

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
Works great for vocab and spelling words. It has most of the words but not all word forms. Helps when writing essays and papers because of the Thesaurus so it doesn;t get repetitive. Overall worth the money.

This seiko Dictionary-ETC is available in New Zealand for $NZ59.95 - $US29.95. Something is amiss ? Mauro Zanderigo Auckland New Zealand

3-0 out of 5 stars It's only half a dictionary without pronunciation
This is the closest thing I found to have both an organizer and a dictionary. Only if it had pronunciation scripts! It's hard to believe there is nothing better out there, but as far as a pocket size conbination of organizer and dictionary is concerned, that's all there is. I looked at both Palm and Pocket PC platforms but was disappointed. While the Palm has a barely functional dictionary (for extra money), Pocket PC has nothing so far. Why? I'm willing to pay. (An update: This review was written in year 2000. The comments regarding Palm and Pocket PC platforms are no longer true as of January 2003. Several complete desk-top size dictionaries have been produced for both platforms since then.)

4-0 out of 5 stars ...worth the money...
Obviously faster then conventional dictionaries, with the built in cross-reference. 50 most recent new words can be added in to the momory for later reference, games, etc. Come with a simple 32KB organiser, as added value. The best I like about this dictionary is the built in cross-reference between spell check, thesarus and dictionary. Not bad, it also allow me to do conversion like currency, metric, clothing size, etc. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
I bought this dictionary and was extremely dissapointed. All the words have one short brief definition and some of those definitions were to short to make sense. I wouldn't reccomend this dictionary to anyone. No use spending your money on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slim and portable- a great gift

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, could be better
The Seiko ThumBoard is a nifty little add-on. I've thrown it in my bag attached to my Visor, and I'm amazed it doesn't pull off or turn itself on. I have small fingers and thought it would be a snap to use. As it turns out, even my small thumbs feel oafish on the board. However, I believe setting the repeat-key setting to slow eliminates any typos. My only complaint is that, like on a regular keyboard, there should be a shift key (and perhaps an FN key) on both sides of the board. Also--I haven't figured out how to make selections from pop up menues. I end up tapping my choice and going on my way. This is still much more convenient than before. I use public transportation and I can't tell you how many times my grafitti markings were turned into jibberish on bumpy bus rides.
All in all--a good product. Could I live without it? Sure, but I'm still glad I got it and the price is right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible product and customer service
I rarely use this product because it seldom worked when it did work. Most of the time when pushing on the power button via the keypad my handspring would enter into hotsync mode. Now, even with the updated driver, the Thumboard just fails to work! Ive called Seiko-Austin in the past and they told me it was just a fault with their product and nothing they could do about it. The nerve of some people! Ive emailed Amazon but sadly the return date under their policy has expired. I now keep the ThumBoard handy as a cautionary reminder which effectively prevents me from engaging in impulsive online shopping.

4-0 out of 5 stars almost a year now
I purchased this keyboard last January. I could live without it, but I've found that it makes entering text a lot easier. I have had some of the same problems that others have had with it. I've found that if you wiggle the keyboard while its connected to your visor, and the visor is on, then problems with hotsync are more likely.

My biggest issue with this product is that I couldn't ship it outside USA. I had to ship it to a US address and then get it forwarded to Canada. Well I have it now, and you can't have it back.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works
I like this unit for my Visor Pro because it is big and my fat fingers are too thick to use the Treo effectively. Wished this unit would have worked with the Visor Pro right out of the box as advertised; instead, I had to go to the Seiko website and download a new driver...then it worked like a charm. What ever happened to the promise of "plug & play"???

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea - Bad Implementation
1. Love the design. It doesn't add to the size of the Visor, since it envelops the bottom half of the PDA. There are buttons on the top of the ThumBoard that let you hit the "menu" "calc" and other functions down in the graffiti area. Also, it naturally sits in your hand and is easy to type on.

2. Very odd glitch that on occasion it will attempt to do a sync instead of turn on/off.

3. Mine did not work. I've got 5 computers in my apt (5 PCs, 1 Mac) and know how to use my Palm very well. The ThumBoard simply refused to work...it only wanted to sync. I realize this may be one faulty unit - but when the only place I can seem to find it is online, that is too much hassle to exchange items and hope that it works.

From what I've seen online, people love the design of this keyboard. If it works, you'll love it. If you can't get it to work (or it constantly syncs), you're just better off using Graffiti or upgrading to a PDA with a built in keyboard (Treo or Clie). ... Read more
