5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It -- Seiko Delivers What It Promises
The SmartPad is a wonderful device. The other reviewers focus on what the SmartPad can't do, and slam the product for not doing things (e.g. acting as a giant grafitti input device or handwriting recognition device). These are straw men -- Seiko never promises to do these things. What it does promise, and delivers on, is the ability to capture handwritten notes as a graphical file, and then enable you to attach, sort and e-mail these notes to others. I'm a lawyer, and my objective with the SmartPad was to find a way to eliminate paper notes, and to store these notes so that they could be easily accessed, retrieved and forwarded. My secretary has even found a way to store the SmartPad files as a Microsoft Word document, and enter them into DocsOpen, our firm-wide document retrieval software. I have stacks of files on my desk, and can never seem to find the right yellow legal pad of notes WHEN I need it -- SmartPad lets me store these notes electronically, and retrieve 1 or 50 copies of my thoughts. Never again will I be shuffling papers on my desk in the middle of a phone call, trying to find a record of a conversation I had last week. I've shown this gadget to several in my office over the past several weeks, and they all want one! Three cheers to Seiko and the people at Ecrio for their innovative design and software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handwriting recognition for the Seiko Smartpad 2
I purchased the Seiko Smartpad 2 knowing full-well that it didn't officially support handwriting recognition. However, I was aware that there were 'work-arounds' for utilizing the handwriting recognition tools in Microsoft Word to compensate for the lack of the functionality in the Smartpad software.

However, sadly, I was disappointed. You are not able to import any files using the MS Handwriting Recognition functionality (at least I couldn't figure out how, even after I called MS). So, The way that I tried to do this was:

- Create the file on my PDA (which is a Palm 5 - OS 3.3)
- HotSync with the Smartpad desktop application so that the file was transferred to my PC (my desktop OS is Windows XP)
- I then saved the file as one of the two available formats (either .bmp or .gif - no other options are available).
- I then had to open the file in either MS Paint or MS Photo Editor and resave it as a .tif file so that MS Document Imaging could read it (MS Doc Imaging only opens .tif files).
- I then ran the "Recognize Text Using OCR" function (sometimes it failed when it couldn't recognize the text)
- Finally, I selected the "Send Text to Word" function.

The result was very, disappointing. No matter how neatly I wrote, it never got any of the text right. I even tried typing in Word using the comic sans font, saving the text as a picture, and repeating the above process. The result was the same.

When I called Microsoft, the tech support person said that he knew of no way to do this. This is contrary to some of the reviews I have read by purchasers of the product, including one review on Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but only for Palm devises
It works great right out of the box, except I have to turn my handspring Visor because the IR signal has to be facing the IR on top of the portfolio case. Other than that the drawings are accurate and are easily transfered to PC.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it, not a bad price either.
I don't have this exact same version, I have the Smartpad 2. It is great. The qwerty keyboard on the pad makes it even better. Most people are giving it bad reviews because of incompatability. You can go to [the website] to download an update so that it can work with your PDA. Also people are unhappy about it only storing images. Dang, some people are just so stupid. It says on the package that it will ONLY STORE IMAGES and nothing more. So before you go and make a bad review, read the package first. Also I had one major issue, before I bought this. I thought that it would be too big, but to tell you the truth, I thought it was going to be much bigger. The leather case is great. The pen is ok, not great, but it will do the job. Also I like the twist down IR. I have a handspring, palm 5, and a ipaq. I can use the ipaq and the palm when the twist ir is up, and the handspring when it is down. The newer version of this costs [more]. I would shell the extra 50 and go with that one. THe keyboard under the pad helps a lot. Also It has a cell phone holder!!! I was considering not getting this after all the bad reviews. But all the bad reviews said were incompatability, and people who didn't read and thought that it had hand recognition. So I went for it, and I am extremely happy. If you need it for handrecognition, you can get ocr software and it will work, otherwise if you need it just to keep track of your notes, this will definitley do the job.

Pros:

*Nice Leather Case
*Keyboard
*Cell Holder (may not be a big deal to others, but it is very useful)
*Size
*The ability to store all your notes on your PDA or computer.

Cons:

*Pen is "bouncy"
*Leather tends to get dirty, but nothing that a wet cloth can't fix
*It would be nice to have handrecognition, but not neccessary.

Hope that helped

5-0 out of 5 stars Handwriting Recognition
I purchased the Smartpad 2 for use with an iPAQ 3835. (The Smartpad 2 does work with Windows CE devices after you download the free software from Seiko.) After reading the reviews on here, I assumed that it would not support handwriting recognition. (Actually Seiko's s tech support also told me that it would not support handwriting recognition.) I scribbled a list on the smartpad and just to see what would happen, I copied it to Word and ran the handwriting recognition program. My list was converted to text with about an 80% accuracy. I have found if I write a little more carefully I can get 90% plus accuracy. It may not be perfect but it does work. I am extremely pleased with the Smartpad and it is proving to be more useful than I had expected when I made the purchase. This is one of the few products that have exceeded my expectations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but it does the job!
I own a Palm m505 (since 2001) and then purchased a Seiko Thumboard accessory instead of the keyboard so I can write down notes while I'm travelling in the backseat of the car (you can't get any mobile than that). Now, I have replaced my dim m505 for a new m515 and continue to use the Thumboard with it. Although there are Hotsync pop-up snags upon insertion of the handheld, eventually the Thumboard becomes useful again and truly fun to use. Even if Palm has brought forth new devices with built-in keyboards, this product is a delight to use. I love my Thumboard as much as I love my my Palm m515! Does the trick. Perfect for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution
I find this type of products very usefull, I own a Palm m125, and since I didn't see a good reference picture of the product (the one presented shows only the front) unfortunatedly I purchase this article by mistake so be VERY CAREFUL when buying it, this product won't work with the m125

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty feeble
Really does very little more than act as a substitute for graffiti. Not useful for taking notes or writing emails. Any you can't use the stylus while typing. It also makes the sleek Palm much bulkier and uglier. I returned it and bought the Palm Portable Keyboard which really allows me to do what I want, that is take notes in meetings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect "On The Go" Keyboard
This is perfect for people on the go.

I tried the Palm Portable Keyboard (The folding one), but it requires a hard flat surface, something hard to find on a crowded WMATA Bus or subway car. The Thumboard is not as fast as the Palm Portable Keyboard at a desk, but the Keyboard cannot be used in a car, bus, or subway without carrying a lap desk with you. Even at a desk, since my Palm V is not a laptop computer, I had a hard time reading the small display when using the Palm Portable Keyboard. Since the Thumboard does not require a hard surface, I can hold my PDA close to better read what I am typing.

My Graffiti writing is currently faster than the Thumboard, but I have trouble with Graffiti recognizing my handwriting on a bouncy bus or the stuttering stops of a subway car. I can enter data much faster on a bus or subway just because of the reduction of errors.

The Thumboard is better than the built-in screen keyboard since it includes very useful characters such as the shortcut character (a cursive lower case L). Since it clicks to the bottom of your PDA, you can also use two thumbs to type.

I have friends who claim to have worn out their PDA's Graffiti writing area, but I have never had a problem. For the inexpensive price of this Thumboard, you don't have to worry about wearing out the writing area on your expensive PDA.

The reason I gave this product a 4 instead of a 5 is the Palm OS. Currently Palm OS does not support external keyboards, so this great product requires a Hack (change to the Palm OS itself), there are several shareware programs on my Palm m500 that I cannot live without (DateBk4-an improved calendar, PocketQuicken- a finance program, HanDbase- a database, and TakeNote!- a text/word processor). At least one of these programs conflicts with the Thumboard Hack. If Palm includes keyboard expansion in future versions of its OS, I will be very happy. Currently I have ordered a Thumboard for my back up PDA- a Palm V- that I use for grocery shopping.

A last note, both of my PDAs have molded hard cases. I have to remove them to use the Thumboard (but I had to remove them to use the Palm Portable Keyboard). When I purchased the Thumboard Seiko offered a free carrying case that held the PDA with the Thumboard still attached. If this is an issue for you, check that the Thumboard can click onto your PDA while still in its carrying case and/or the PDA with the Thumboard attached still fits inside your carrying case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for longer entries
I was a also a bit dubious about the usability of this product. And living in the UK it meant I had to post it to my mate Rick in Philly, and he posted it on to me! Anyway, when it arrived I was pleased in all respects. The size is good, the built quality seems fine, the keys response was good (not too spongy - if that's a word), and the main thing the response time is immediate. I was worried that you would need to s-l-o-w down the typing speed in order to allow the software to keep up, but last night I was merrily typing in telephone numbers and never found I was going to fast. While its a bit of a clunky unit to use ALL the time, its fine to keep in your bag, and when the thought of typing a long e-mail using Graphiti (how DO you spell it?) seems a bit daunting, just plug this in, and away you go. The keys are a BIT small, but then we'd all moan it was too big if they made them bigger! Highly recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a handy tool; good value for the price
This Seiko Dictionary and Thesaurus is a great companion. Compared to a traditional dictionary and a thesaurus, it's less expensive, it's easier to carry, and has a better user interface.

I'm skeptical of the claim that it has 220,000 definitions. It is missing some words that are in my 60,000-word dictionary, such as "defenestrate" and "valetudinarian". In some cases, multiple entries refer to the same definition. (If you look up "volatility", you get the definition for "volatile".) Perhaps it has 220,000 _entries_, but not 220,000 definitions?

When I ordered this product from Amazon.com, it arrived with two sets of Spanish instructions and no English instructions. I contacted Seiko customer service about this three months ago and they promised me a set of English instructions. It never arrived, and now Seiko customer service doesn't even answer my e-mails.

Fortunately, the product is easy to figure out without instructions. :-)

In spite of the questionable number of definitions and the poor customer service, I give it a full 3 stars because it was so inexpensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars I carry it along with me everywhere
I have fun using Seiko's Word Power Personal Tutor. I like to articulate what I'm thinking, saying or writing; So I'm constantly using the spell checker and dictionary. The Q&A gets the brain moving - words that you wouldn't think about you have to figure how they relate to one of the mutliple choices. I like it and recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very bright Dictionary
I received this dictionary as a gift. I am a reader and look up words I don't know. The idea was that I could carry this one around and look up the word at the very time I discovered one I didn't know.
Unfortunately, I believe too much brain space of the dictionary is taken up with games and such...which I don't use. NONE of the words I have looked up since Christmas are included. I have come to believe that if I need to look up the word, it isn't there.
A true disappointment.
Examples: defenstration, quintile, arisaid, circadian, neoprene.
I suggest A READER'S DICTIONARY with all the obscure words and none of the games. After all, a reader's entertainment is READING, not games.

Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, educational product!
This is a great, inexpensive little product!! It is compact and convenient to use. It is terrific for people who cannot spell, alike myself. I only wish there were more words listed in the dictionary!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for non-speaking travellers who don't like to type
A friend loaned me this cool device to use on a long trip to Mexico. It's great for translating individual words (such as menu items) without having to type on the small keyboard of other translators. You can usually get the gist of longer phrases but sometimes the results are quite amusing. Although this device doesn't have all the grammer tools of other portable translators, it is a good alternative for someone who is not a serious student of Spanish. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Would have been lost without it
not to mention lonely. I went to Spain in 98 with the intention of "picking up" spanish. It wasn't quite that easy. As it turned out this little machine was my only link to what was familier: the english language. Also it was a lot of fun and helped break down the language wall. I took it back to Spain with me again in 99 and then to Mexico. I don't go anywhere without it. What I would like to see improved on is that the words aren't always the best translation for example: gafas tranlates to goggles while should be glasses at least that is what they called them in Spain. Also, the verb conjugation for it/he/she is the same but you have to go through all three, in other words two extra key strokes if you get my meaning. Also, the phrs (phrase) really isn't very heplful. But over all a very good product. I recommend it and I wish Sieko had one for Italian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seiko/Berlitz TR2720CS Spanigh-English Dictionary
I absolutely love this product. Switches easily from English to Spanish and vice versa. The advanced verb translator as well as the phrase/category buttons for different subjects is excellent. I only wish that Seiko/Berlitz made something similar in French! A+ on the product AND it's very small - convenient for a pocket or purse. (Does anyone know of anything like this for French?)

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
I purchased this tool to help me in a Spanish class. The display is hard to read and there are no special characters. Overall it was a poorly designed piece of electonics.

2-0 out of 5 stars O.K. for English to Spanish verbs, but not vice versa
This translator works very well in conjugating Spanish verbs. However; on Spanish to English it falls short. Its vocabulary for nouns and verb participals is not much better than much smaller and less costly devices.

4-0 out of 5 stars a bit more than you would expect
