3-0 out of 5 stars Slow writing causes unreadability if you work too fast.
I've got a Kodak 4330 Digital Camera and bought this card with it at the same time. Since then, I've lost a few images and videos from using the card. I had the same issues as another person here, after taking videos and photo, my camera would slow down intolerably, so much that whenever I tried to copy the images onto my PC, it timed out. At first I thought it was the batteries running out but after charging them I still had the same issue. Eventually, I found that if I removed the memory card, the camera worked fine.

I mucked around with it some more and found the problem. If you take photo's too fast, you can stuff the card. I did a few run-throughs clicking madly and consistently got the problem occuring (I had to format the card to get it working again). I found that especially when taking video, if you stop recording and start another recording just a *bit* too quickly, you basically can't take any more photo's or recordings as they all become unreadable.

What this boils down to is: Don't work too quickly. You have to take photo/video, wait 3-5 seconds. Take photo/video, wait 3-5 seconds and so on (and you REALLY have to wait 3-5 seconds). Unfortunately for me, there are times when I do hit the button just a bit too quickly and BAM, I've instantly ruined everything I've just taken. So, if you work slow and steady you should be fine. It's a decent card, but if you've got the money, I'd suggest looking at a card that works a bit faster.

Actually, if you check www.sandisk.com they tell you this about the card:

Why is my card not accessible or my pictures and files can't be opened?
- Taking pictures too fast so the camera cannot finish writing them before the next one is taken.
- Turning off the camera while it is still saving information.
- Removing the card while the camera is still saving data to it.
- Taking pictures with weak batteries.
- Large static charges to the card.
- Airport x-ray machines (we recommend carrying cards on your person).
- Sitting the cards on or near strong magnetic sources.
- Removing the card from the reader while you have files that are on the card open.
- Removing the card from the reader while it is still copying files to the hard drive.
- On a Mac, removing the card without first trashing the icon.
- On NT, removing the card without first running safe swap.
- On ME and win 2000, removing the card without first stopping it.
- File corruption is caused by many things and our memory cards are less susceptible than regular hard drives or other media with moving parts.

To recover the pictures you can try the following:
1. File recovery software will work in some cases (query on the internet for file recovery).
2. Locate a disk recovery service in your area (Try DriveSavers on the web at www.drivesavers.com or by phone at 1-800-440-1904. You may also try a search on the internet for data or disk recovery.)
3. Run Scandisk against the card.

As I said, it's a decent card and other than this, I haven't had any other problems with it. Just remember to work slowly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the Memories
It's small. It's reasonably priced. It does what it's supposed to do: It remembers.
Cards such as this one go into devices that have slow processors. Have realistic expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Best Card I have Owned
This card works great. It is fast and works great with my digtal camera. I have had not problems with the card. It can read data as fast as my camera can write the the SD card. It also works great in my HP 2215 iPAQ. The only card that I have seen that works better is the SANDisk 512 MB card that I have purchased. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Memory Card
I don't know what other people's having problem with.
I've used this Sandisk SD 256mb since last spring
and have taken about 4000 pictures without ANY problem.
I had no problem with this memory card at all.
It is one great memory card.

1-0 out of 5 stars angry
May be I'm just unlucky to get a lemon from a reputable manufacturer of SD card. Things (#$^&*) like this happen, but I'm still a bit angry. Data got wiped out for no reasons several times during a few months' span. Word documents can simply turn into a page of Y's and become unreadable. Then one day it just died, uttering an error message with its last breath... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice !!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars compact, quick, but finnicky
I wanted to get a Compact Flash card reader for my Mac and I wanted it to be firewire, for those who have not used firewire, or doubt its worth, you must see it to believe it. The firewire connection is ridiculously fast for loading pictures onto my computer. (Google "firewire vs usb" for a comparison)

I have an older G4 desktop mac and the plugs are in behind the tower, other Macs have more readily accessible firewire outlets. Having to move the computer is a minor annoyance, but nothing big.

Once correctly connected the card reader pops up on the desktop as a small disk icon, open it and there is a folder with all of the pictures taken with my camera. Copying the pictures takes a few seconds max, compared to many minutes for a similar USB device.

One small complaint I have is the plug-n-play aspect of this device, sometimes after connecting, it will not appear on the desktop, a quick un-plug and re-connect solves this problem.

Also, you have to be very very careful inserting the cards, as other reviewers have noted the small metal connectors are delicate, but if you treat it nicely it will work just fine.

Pros: Quick for transferring files, makes USB look like a snail. Works seamlessly with my CF cards full of digi-cam pics.

Cons: awkward plug-n-play, sometimes have to re-connect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Defective
Although the CF card reader worked well the first time i plugged it into my Powerbook, that was the last time it functioned correctly. I had to return it within 7 days of its first use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suggestion for use of all memory card readers
I would squirt a couple of drops of WD-40 on the pins, no harm's done as WD-40 is electrically-friendly and reduces friction a lot. This will reduce undue stress on the pins from constant pull 'n push and make the reader last longer.

In my case, the USB connection on my Nikon CoolPix 5K is more robust than most USB connectors on digital cameras. So I use it and leave the CF card inside the camera all the time unless I really need to swap out the 256 or 512 mb cards when it's full (which is seldom). Or to show off the card to prospective digital camera buyers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable reader due to broken connector pins
The idea is good. The tranfer speed is fast. But CompactFlash memory card by itself is not really designed for multiple plug-and-play. The alignment of CF card to the reader is always tricky. After using it for about two months, a connector pin inside the reader was bent and eventually broken, making the reader unusable. Otherwise it would have been a good product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect addition to my mobile aresenal...
The reader is fast. Example: I took 56-2MP images from my camera recently. I plugged this reader into my G4, plugged in the card, the card mounted, I dragged the images to my Pictures folder, and they copied immediately. No waiting. I was amazed, because with my [MIA] USB reader, it could take a while to transfer that many images, over a minute. A copy dialog didn't even pop up, because it transferred so fast. It doesn't hurt that it's a cutie too. 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does not do CF!
The Amazon product description is erroneous. This 4-in-1 PC Card adapter for flash memory cards can do Secure Digital (SD), Multimedia Card (MMC), MemoryStick (MS), and the older SmartMedia cards, but not the larger CompactFlash (CF) card. I have yet to find a PC Card adapter that can do both SD and CF formats.

Otherwise this is a good, solid adapter which turns your flash memory card into an external drive on a laptop PC. Just insert the flash memory card into the adapter, then plug the adapter into your laptop, presto! the memory card appears in your My Computer or Windows Explorer as an external removable disk, and you can do all the copying and moving you want. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Problem with memory stick can easily be solved...
... by simply formatting the stick IN your digital camera. It will function perfectly, and no images will be lost.

3-0 out of 5 stars At first it's great, but it's flaws show through time...
Upon purchasing my Sony F-707 Digital Camera, I decided to also pick up an additional memory stick. Because the Sony brand sticks were much more expensive, I settled for this SanDisk. I was very pleased with the new stick technology while using the 16MB memory stick that was supplied with the camera. When I opened up the SanDisk one and put it in the camera, I was blown away by how many more pictures could be stored on it, however, after a while I realized it was not storing all of the pictures I had been taking. It kept doing this, so I put the Sony stick back in. I recommend purchasing a Sony one right off the bat, because valuable photos can be lost. I just bought a Sony 128MB memory stick, and I am extremely pleased. ... Read more
