4-0 out of 5 stars The LCD for the Minimalist
Remember with buying FLAT LCD monitors, the VIEWABLE space is as advertised, while a 17" CRT (normal) monitor actually only has 15" viewable despite being advertised at 17". I thought 15" would be too small, but it's a lot bigger once you actually use one and sit in front of it.

The words "less is more" couldn't ring truer for this monitor. The very thin frame makes the picture look larger, and as an added bonus, the power supply is built in (no brick) with the signal and power cords neatly stowing away through the hole in the stand. Very low profile, you will be able to use your desk again.

Picture quality is good, and make sure to turn on your "ClearType" in Windows XP. There is very little "ghosting" effect on the screen, and I am able to play games effectively. The only bad part is that the swivel is rigid and a bit hard to adjust, unlike the display on the new table lamp iMacs.

The bottom line is, once you go flat, you won't go back.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best flat panel I've used!!! Flawless!

1-0 out of 5 stars buy another brand -- any other brand
I bought a Samsung 172N six months ago and will now be on my third unit. The first one lasted less than two weeks before permanent vertical lines began appearing. Fortunately it was within the retailer's return period so they gave me a new unit. The second one lasted until recently, when it instantly and irrevocably started displaying bands of vertical lines, and became super-bright with severe lagging and ghosting. There was no apparent cause for either problem. Most unfortunate of all, Samsung treats warranty/customer service requests as a game. I have been without a usable unit for two weeks, and still have no idea when the refurbished replacement unit will be shipped. Repair is not a good option since they only do repairs at one facility in the entire U.S., and can give no estimate whatsoever as to how long the repair will take. In my multiple conversations with them not one employee has expressed any degree of surprise that two brand new LCD displays have had these kinds of problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgious Display
This is a brilliant 17" monitor...as good as any in it's class. The only CRT I've seen looks as good (as this monitor's native resolution) is a Trinitron based montior. The others look dull by comparison...including Samsung's 17" and 19". There might a few advantages for a CRT, but this technology is simply the best in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung 172N Rocks!
This thing is awesome. I use a Samsung 171v at work. When my home monitor started to die, I thought a 171v would be nice. I started looking at all the models Samsung makes so a visit to there website was in order. This helped explain the letter part of the model number. 'N' is for narrow. 'V' is vesa compliant wall mount, which they all appear to be. S is slim and T is thin. These last two are essentially the same except one is VGA input only, the other is VGA/DVI.

I would recommend any Samsung LCD display, but I especially like the 'N' due to the narrow frame around the display.

4-0 out of 5 stars A product of excellent value, considering ...
The price shown will buy you a very good crt in the 19" diag. category. In the LCD display world, it only gets you a display with good but not great image quality, and at a 17" diag. size. Initially, the text quality looks blurry (not crisp) at normal font sizes. In windows, my recommendation is to go to EXTRA LARGE fonts on your desktop before your eyes do too much squinting. Over a period of time, the crispness of the display improves considerably, as your vision becomes accustomed to the LCD look vs CRT's.

The colors are not too bad looking, and Samsung provides color management software for tweaking rgb and color temperature. There is also a brightness control with adequate range for well-lit and dark rooms. Unlike a CRT, this LCD panel is light as a feather and is energy efficient. There were no dead pixels and the display worked right out of the box. It seems reliable. Driver installation was simple and straightforward.

The competition for your display dollar is fierce. CRTs are better (smoother) looking and cheaper. But they are gargantuan, generate heat, and over the course of time, they tend to defocus/blur. The very best (photo-realistic) lcd monitors, sold by Apple, are several times more expensive than Samsung. Samsung also makes a superior 17" monitor, but at a higher price point. You have to let your eyes and your budget decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAMSUNG SyncMaster 172N 17" LCD Monitor
i got this monitor after trying the cornea MP704b, and envision screen, as well as a sceptre x7. for the price (you need to hunt to get the best price on the web), this is the best i've found. text is very sharp, graphics look gorgeous, and response time is fantastic. wide viewing angles, too. this is a very nice lcd monitor. on the minus side, this does not have built in speakers (not a problem for most, since outboard speakers are generally better). highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Happy
I've been in the market for quite some time to replace my aging CRT monitor, especially since it takes up an enormous amount of my desk. Looking at the monitors in my price range, it basically seemed like I could purchase either a 15" or 17" monitor. I'd been told to always buy the biggest monitor you can afford, but I'm not so sure that's true in this case. I took a chance and purchased this 15" Samsung, and so far I'm extremely glad I did. The picture is extremely sharp, bright, and very clear, every bit as good as any other 15" inch monitor I previewed. Furthermore, this monitor seems like just the right size for my desk, any larger and I honestly think it would take up too much space. But, the thing that really makes me happy is the fact that it can basically act as a very high quality TV, complete with a remote control and pretty decent speakers. Maybe in a year or so, I'll change my mind and decide to upgrade to a larger LCD monitor. Well, I'm sure prices will have dropped quite a bit, and there will always be more bargains to be found. However, I can always use this current Samsung as a TV next to my bed, placed on a wall somewhere, or in my kitchen. I can't say the same for any other monitor I could have bought. In other words, maybe in a few years I'll buy a new monitor, but there will be plenty of great uses for this one. Any other monitor I'd probably junk. If you're in the market for an LCD monitor, consider the fact that it will probably last you many years. Wouldn't it be nice if not only it could be a great primary display, but also could be used a few years down the road for something else? I can't recommend this monitor highly enough, and I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bargain Flat Screen TV
Buy this monitor, use it as a flat screen tv and pay half of what you would pay if you bought it as a tv. You can even hang it on the wall! Has all the different video and stereo inputs and a great picture. The size is compact and lightweight. I have never used it as a monitor because my computer already had a samsung 17 inch lcd. We were looking at Sharp and Phillips flatscreens last year for our bedroom when we found this and have been delighted with our purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xtremely good image quality...
As a monitor this one gets 5 stars... as a TV it gets 4 stars... overall 4.5. When using it as a TV image quality decreases at closer ranges, and also sound quality could definetly be improved... the good about the TV is the PiP mode, 64x Digital Zoom, and that the built in TV-Tunner is NSTC/PAL/SECAM compatible...

Ahhhh... It only weights around 9 pounds...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV and Monitor
Nice monitor and yery good picture resolution compare to price you paid. Only thing PIP size function doesn't work in 150MP model

5-0 out of 5 stars Close to CRT quality
As I'm writing this review, I'm watching the evening news. The picture in a picture mode is great for watching TV while using the computer. My previous monitor was a CRT, known for its sharpness, but it hoarded my desk space, not to mention a monster of weight to move. The LCD sharpness is almost as good as the CRT; the other features of this monitor, especially thin size and light weight, make up for the tiny difference in sharpness.

The monitor's speakers are pretty good, and external speakers can be added. I had hoped I could run my computer sound through it, but only the TV plays through it. I have a MacIntosh G4 Cube, so it may be a minor incompatibility. By keeping the Cube's USB speakers connected to the computer for computer use and using the monitor's speakers for TV/Video use, I've had no other problems.

I would suggest this monitor for college students, or anyone who lives in a dorm/small living space, yet wants to have both a desktop computer and video entertainment system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good printer, toner costs are actually not high!
An earlier reviewer complaining about toner costs missed a point about the Samsung. The Samsung toner cart is a combined toner/drum cartridge. The Brother printers have seperate toners and drums. From experience, you need to replace the Brother drum after about 15k pages, not the 20k they rate the drums at. So every 4-5 cartridges, you need a new drum too. The combined Samsung cart is about 50% more than the equiv Brother, but if you get the Brother, you will spend the "savings" on a drum later. That said, both the Samsung and equiv Brother are great printers, just make sure your Brother drum doesn't run out during a project, or your local office supply chain store will charge about 50% more for the drum than Amazon (about as much as 2 Samsung carts).

2-0 out of 5 stars Toner too expensive
In interests of full disclosure, I chose not to buy this printer due to toner costs. Just check those costs before you buy. A 3000 page toner costs $79, versus $54 for the toner of an equivalent Brother (say the HL1440 which I have owned) or $70 for a 6000 page Brother toner. I think Samsung is known to do this "make the profit in the refills" for this printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice
This is my first laser printer, and I'm amazed at how quickly it prints compared to my old inkjet. Text quality is great and the printer is very easy to set up. Mac users be warned, even though the specs say Macs are supported, Samsung ships this printer with a small card inside saying that any reference to Mac support should be disregarded and offers to buy back the printer because of this afterthought. Overall, an excellent value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Laser Printer
This is truly a fantastic investment. The picture quality is very sharp. It prints amazingly fast. Can do almost everything a professional quality printer could. It's so small it fits perfectly in my desk. It also goes into sleep mode to preserve the toner. Get this printer. The 1750, this one, is the newest model from samsung.

2-0 out of 5 stars Samsung has discontinued Mac Support!!!
This wonderfully efficient, quick, and compact printer worked relatively well under Mac OS 10.2, but-when I updated to OS 10.3-it failed to provide adequate performance. Some items do not print, printing order is reversed, and (for some users) the OS 10.3 printer driver update (not included) corrupts the Mac OS system to the effect that it disallows all printing. Quelle Horreure!! Samsung claims the driver was not sufficiently developed because they have discontinues Mac support and their software development firm, located in Korea, does not recognize Macintosh as a viable business partner. In other words, skip this purchase if you use 10.3! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung 753DF 17" Dyna Flat Syncmaster Monitor
This is a fabulous monitor w/great color and dot pitch(0.20). I bought this monitor last month and has been running great. This is amazing monitor with affordable price. Comes with its own Software for custon setting the color, lumens etc. I certainly recommend this monitor if you are looking for one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best value in this price range
This monitor is the entry level for Samsung's new 'perfectly flat screens' (*much* flater that traditional 'flat screens'. Not eveyone likes the new super-flat monitors but personally I love them. This Samsung has superb resolution (.20 dot pitch!) and the usual reccomended refresh rate: 85Hz at 1024x768. The controls are okay but a novice user may have a little trouble at first.

Samsung monitors are pretty reliable and have the standard 3 year warranty. You don't get a lot of frills but you do get great resolution at rock bottom prices from a name brand company. With Samsung monitors you usually get the best bang for the buck.

If you don't like the super-flat monitors (check it out at a local store if you aren't sure) consider this:

Hitachi 17" CM615U-511 A good quality monitor (.23 dot pitch 1024x768 85Hz) the best selling point is the deep contrast - the best in this price range. A friend of mine bought one and I was very impressed. However the controls are a little cryptic and pain to navigate. On the upside Hitachi just extended their U.S. warranty to 5 years (on monitors sold after 1/31/01)! Two years longer than most companies.

One note: monitor prices move up and down a lot with seasons and changing glass prices for the screens. In general from September to January is the best season to buy (heavy back to school-holiday competition) but glass prices can easily change the price +/-$30 over a year regardless of other factors.

3-0 out of 5 stars No red
My monitor has a manufactured date of March 2001. The red tube must be dead, because I'm getting no red in my pictures. The picture's still really sharp, but wish I had all my colors back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor if you can find the driver
Its a great monitor if you can find the driver. Which I can't. The samsung webpage crashes IE every link I click, and I've wasted an entire evening trying to find a driver for it and it still wont work.

Im buying a different brand next time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
For the price, this monitor is great. The color & contrast are spot on. I'm very pleased (My third Samsung monitor). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung does a nice job on this one.
the Samsung 763MB is a great monitor.
The Picture is bright, clear, and the images really come to life.

The menu for adjusting your screen options such as brightness, contrast, postion, size, etc... is very well laid out and easy to use. It also has a feature that uses 3 pre-set modes for viewing text, internet & DVD's or games. Those settings really do a nice job of adjusting the display for the appropriate task you are doing.

One more note: The styling of the monitor itself looks really cool, but the plastic smells kinda funny at firs... hehe

I've owned this monitor now for about 4 months, and it has done everything a good monitor SHOULD do. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with it.
The bottom line is:
It's VERY reliable, VERY nice quality, BRIGHT & clear display and OK resolutions.
If you're looking for a great quality flat screen 17" monitor for gaming or multimedia use, look no further!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect!
I did a pretty thorough research on 17" and 20" LCD TVs. Like the Samsung LTN1735, it is a very nice TV. However, I'd prefer 1735 than this one because you can't make it sit straight up--it inlcines backward---like the Sharp E1U or EsomethingU. When I sit on the sofa to watch TV (I am a short person) I have to raise my head all the time.
My ranking according to my personal preference of the 17" 20" LCD TVs are as follows:
1. Samsung LTN
2. Sharp Aquos B4U
3. Toshiba
4. Dell 1700 / Batesias VMT201
5. Sharp E1U
Haven't tried others. There certainly are better ones out there and you just need to do a little research
Some people don't like the Batesias for its average PC pic. But I feel OK. But ultimately wife bought the LTN 1765...personal preference! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is the best LCD monitor
I bought this 3 months ago, and until now, I compare my monitor with other monitors.
There were LCD monitors from hitachi, dell, ... at similar price range. (a few bucks difference.)
This one is brighter than anything else, and crip image is out of question. Well, the exactness of color is not as good as hitachi. The problem looks like it becomes to bright.
The brightness is so good that you can read text easily under the direct sunlight and you cannot even look at the monitor at the maximum bright in a dark room.
The countereffect is that at the maximum brightness, and contrast, light colors tend to be brighter than it should be.
(dell was not as bright as this, and colors had more severe problems)
Of course if you loose contrast and dimm the monitor, it is ok.
But in 99.9% of my monitor work, I do not need the original color. I prefer the comfort of my eye that comes from crisp bright monitor.
When I need to edit photos, I simply change settings of the monitor a little bit. (well, I did it just once in 3 months)

My conclusion. it is the best monitor you can get at the price.
If you have more money, buy bigger monitor. The quality difference is not at all noticible even if you spend $200 more.

Upgrading 19" from 17" LCD was real fun.
So I hope I can buy 21" from samsung very soon.

The Samsung 240T's 24-inch screen offers razor-sharp images and an impressive native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200, making it well-suited to either professional or home theater uses. Image quality benefits from a high (500:1) contrast ratio, peak brightness of 270 candles/square meter, and wide, 170-degree viewing angles horizontally and vertically. Analog RGB and DVI digital link inputs let you plug in everything from your PC or Macintosh computer to home-entertainment devices like a DVD player, DTV receiver, game console, digital satellite system, or camcorder.

Samsung's patented PVA (patterned, multiple-domain vertical alignment) technology is at the heart of the 240T. PVA benefits include high contrast (nearly perfect vertical alignment of the liquid crystal produces a completely black state, yielding a very high contrast ratio), fast--25 ms--response (vertical alignment of the liquid crystal results in extremely fast response to voltage), and high transmittance (extremely narrow domain boundaries increase cell aperture ratios, allowing more light to pass and increasing brightness).

Video features include picture in picture and Samsung's exclusive "Picture by Picture" feature that lets you view two inputs side by side at full resolution. You can run the 240T for five years solid (about 50,000 hours), then change the lamp yourself--and you're set for another five years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last monitor you will ever need
I have had the 240T for over a year now. It is flat out the best monitor one the market today. 1920x1200 over DVI gives razor sharp text, the backlight is super bright and completely even and the colors are stunning. It has such a high pixel frequency that there is never any streaking when playing games. HDTV is awesome on it. Hook up a MyHD card with DVI and enjoy full resolution HDTV.
Everyone who comes over to my house cannot believe how nice it is (and most of my friends are computer geeks).
Trust me, 5 minutes after you pull the 240T out of the box you will forget how much you paid for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring PC and HDTV home theater combo
Until I put the Samsung 240T on my desk, I had thought I could never have a monitor that was too large. Now I'm not so sure. This monitor's physically wide enough that if I position it as close to me as I'd position other LCDs, I actually have to swivel my head to view the whole screen. And the pixel pitch (size of pixels) is wider than I was used to on my IBM A21P Thinkpad notebook (1600x1200 resolution on 15" diagonal) and on my SGI 1600SW (1600x1024 resolution on 17" diagonal). All in all, the monitor looks better viewed from a little further away than these monitors. The brightness, contrast and viewing angle on this monitor blows away anything else I've ever seen. The panel is absolutely uniformly lit and mine arrived with no dead or stuck pixels. The 1920x1200 resolution is large enough for the highest resolution HDTV (1080, which is 1920x1080 pixels).

Contrary to both Samsung's manual and Radeon's manuals, but in agreement with comments on countless mailing lists, both the Radeon 9000 and 9700 Pro models with 128MB memory were able to drive this monitor at full 1920x1200 resolution with DVI. The difference between DVI inputs and VGA inputs is night and day, with DVI being far superior in terms of sharpness. The S-video inputs are quite reasonable, and TV images look as good on this monitor as on other analog TVs, and provide a means to play VHS from from VCR without needing S-video inputs on my computer. But DVDs look much much better when played on the computer's DVD player through a decent progressive software decoder like WinDVD coupled with the graphics card's built-in rescaler. In fact, it's one of the best DVD images I've ever seen. To get the best sound, I take the computer's S/PDIF digital output directly into my AV receiver, thus bypassing my computer's sound card entirely.

All in all, this is a great monitor for home theater and one of only a handful of monitors that run 1920x1200 resolution. Others include Sony's PremierePro P232 23"; Samsung's replacement for this model, the 241MP 24", which also has component video input; and the Apple Cinema HD 23", which requires a connector dongle for DVI input and has no hardware control or S-video input. The Samsung 210T is an identical monitor feature-wise, and uses the same panel technology and same size pixels, but provides a conventional 1600x1200 aspect ratio. Note that it does not come with the speakers, but then I wanted to use my serious home theater speakers anyway. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent for the price
It looks like the price has gone up since I got it, so it might not be the same value that it was previously. But the quality is definitely decent.

As I've seen people recommend for other LCDs, you should run this monitor in the native 1280x1024. Otherwise, pixel interpolation will blur the text. If you are using the monitor to play video games, they will almost certainly run at a lower resolution, and thus be interpolated. But interpolation is fine for graphics and video games. It hurts the eyes to look at the interpolation for text, however.

Some people may not want to run at the full 1280x1024, since it makes window widgets and text tiny. So these people will have to settle with interpolation, which make be even worse.

Another person mentioned damage upon arrival of the monitor. I've had no such problem.

The install instructions are skimpy. I'm using this monitor under Linux and I was suprised to find a Linux section in the installation guide. But it was little help. In fact, the technical specification could not be found among the documentation, and I had to go back to Amazon to figure out, i.e., what the horizontal and vertical refresh ranges were so that X11R6 could find the optimal refresh rate of 76Hz.

Interestingly, the box claims compatibility with Macintosh and Solaris, but I definitely haven't tested this for either.

Going from a CRT, I immediately have relief from the flickering that is inherent to CRTs. But my eyes will still have to get used to this monitor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
I was quite disappointed by the picture quality on this monitor. It was better than my elderly CRT monitor, but nowhere near as crisp as the LCD display on my HP laptop. Also, one of the navigation buttons on the front display was inoperable.

The viewing angle, adjustability, and overall form factor of this monitor was very nice. It's a shame the most important part -- the screen itself -- was so unsatisfactory.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent LCD
with so low price, i can not believe that I can buy so good an LCD. it is so worth it. very clear and crisp. the viewable screen is wide.easy to set up.The Autoadjust fuction makes it very easy to set the LCD to it best performance. The only problem i can find now is that some times during screen saver, it becomes blank, just leaving some lines on the screen, without any other images.I do not know why.but if you use autoadjust fucntion, it becomes Ok instantly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon Drop Kicked The Product
The monitor itself seemed to be great, but when it arrived the box was barely taped shut. Then, when I opened it, the monitor box was already opened and all the styrofoam was demolished. Upon further inspection, it was clear Amazon ordered the monitor from another online merchant and then repackaged it. Unbelievable. Do not order large items from Amazon. It's been almost four weeks since I sent it back and I've still not heard a single word about it. Oh yea I had to buy the monitor locally since it was a gift. Now this monitor is going to cost me $1600 thanks to amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent LCD
Refresh rates on this LCD are awesome, even from games. It runs 1280x1024 at 75Hz, with an extremely sharp and colorful picture. Highly recommended. ... Read more
