4-0 out of 5 stars great little wireless router
I struggled a bit to choose between Linksys
and D-link DI-714. Some people's negative
experience with the Linksys product made me turn to the D-link product even though there is not much review for the relatively new DI-714.

I opened the package today and the experience so far is excellent. It was 2 hours from the time I opened the package to
me surfing the internet from a laptop. Most of the time is spent in configuring my desktop to talk to the DI-714. I had fixed IP address with my cable modem provider. The instructions given to configure my desk top to this new environment were woefully
inadequate. Even now, I am not sure if I have set all the TCP/IP
parameters properly on the desktop. This experience of taking too long to configure the desktop to talk to the router is the reason I gave this product a 4 star as opposed to 5 star.

Once the router was given all the TCP/IP settings, setting up the laptop was less than 5 minutes and it established the wireless connection ( with D-link DWL650 ) right away. It was
a very pleasant experience.

Throughout the house, the link quality is greater than 75% and
signal strength is greater than 65%. Even at the low end of these numbers, I did not see any deterioration in speed.
I could watch video at 300kb/sec easily. It is just a cool thing to see full screen video on your lap top as you walk around with it.

My advice to D-link would be to provide better documentation on the quick install manual about how to change the desktop if it is configured for static IP addresses with the DSL or Cable Modem provider. If I just follow the instructions given, it just does not work. It says, run winipcfg and select releaseall and renewall. That does not do anything. I had to statically
assign the router IP address to talk to it first. I do not know
what the problem is.

I did not have to download any new firmware. Dlink website has great scope for improvement. When I went there to see if there is any firmware update for the 714, it is just absolutely unuserfriendly to figure this out. Even now, I do not know if there is a firmware update or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Reliable, Easy Set-up and Ready for the Future
This is another great router from the D-Link Wireless Router Family. The difference from this one and the more popular DI-713P is that the DI-714 has detachable Antenna for future utilization of bigger and stronger Antenna. This would allow for a much stronger signal and a bigger area in which you can establish a connection. This would come in handy for larger homes, or small offices that have many walls or interference.
Although the DI-713P has a built in Print Server, you might be like me and already have a Print Server on your network. The DI-714 seems to have traded it's Print Server for an extra Ethernet Port. In my book these two trade offs are just what I needed. I just don't want to wait so long to get the bigger and better antenna.
The Set-up and configuration is very easy with the DI-714 because it is all HTML based and you can access it from any computer on the Network with a web browser. And the built in firewall is a bonus. I was running a software based firewall, but now I don't need to with my built in hardware firewall.
Everything has been coming up D-Link these past months, and I always check to see if they have something that can fit my needs first. And I highly recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fly By Night, mediocre at best company
This Router (like most of their products) is the product of
a company founded on widespread mediocrity.

As a Network security Engineer, and even more importantly,
the guy that many people try to keep up with technologically
I have to say that D-Link has successfully embedded themselves
in the technology market. They are the company to buy from if
you don't mind paying an average price for below average
quality.

If you want a real broadband router try Linksys they cost
about the same but are better overall. I think D-Link needs
to narrow their product range and put more effort into
their product quality as they seem to be spread too thin.

2-0 out of 5 stars yes and no
Overall installation was very easy, up in 15 minutes.

I found the wireless component of this product very good. Decent range (whole house), easy to setup. I hear you should use encryption to hide the backdoor of this product, and any "piggybacking" from the outside.

The initial install was very good. Using DHCP from ISP, all went together well. All my computers found the router without problems, and received an IP address.

This product goes straight down the tubes with its advanced features, which is what sold me. I cannot get its "virtual server" settings to route HTTP, FTP, Telnet traffic to internal servers. The "ALL(DMZ)" setting was the only way to get one server visible on the outside, which defeats the purpose of the firewall. I was only able to get one of three computers in the DMZ. Also, with DMZ enabled, I was not able to VPN (using IPSec) to my company's private net thru the router. However, with DMZ disabled, VPN works fine.
I am using the most updated firmware, which shipped with the product. Hoping there is a upgrade soon to fix this hunk of junk, and allow it to do what I want it to. I had a friend who bought this, and returned it in two days for the DI-713P, which he reports works much better.

Support is free, and not very helpful. Reboot the router, upgrade the firmware or send it back seem to be their favorite replys. Don't try to call the support phone number, because you will never hear back. By the time I got around to trying the advanced features, my trial period was over, lost my receipt and original packaging. Definitely re-thinking this purchase...

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk
Not only is the design of this router ugly and unattactive, but the guts don't work either.

I was at first impressed with the router. The firmware is very easy to access and configure. It worked great for a while, but I noticed that Internet programs such as chat clients--AIM and ICQ for example--kept disconnecting on their own, after about an hour or so of being connected. This never happened with my Linksys router. I check my configuration. Everything is how it should be. So, I called their free tech support. Now I know why it's free. The guy I talked to didn't know a Broadband Router from a hole in the ground. He came up with every excuse as to why it wasn't working, and myself being a CIT major, told him why the reasons he was coming up with didn't make any sense. He finally decided that I had a bad router, and that something was just "missing" from the firmware.

"But I have the most recent firmware installed on it!"

"Yeah, well, sometimes it just happens to where there's something missing on the router."

Right. I'll be sticking with either Linksys or Netgear, and I recommend you do too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars D-Link Wireless Access Point - First Impressions
I bought this for a great price from [on line company]. I just received it today and I have to say, it works well. The instructions were clearly written and the setup was a snap. It took a little more work to get my PCMCIA Adapter (purchased separately) connected (Problems unrelated to the DLINK), but, everything works well together.

PRO's: Low Price; Easy Setup; Configurable as either a Wireless Access Point or a Gateway (to bridge Wireless networks together); Detachable Antennae (can potentially connect aftermarket antennae to allow for greater coverage); Compatible with any Ethernet Router that has an extra ethernet port.

CON's: USB Connection Required for Setup (but drivers available for current OS's including XP)--afterwards can be managed via SNMP software included with the router; USB Cable Included, but, No Ethernet Cable Included.

NOTES: This product is only a Wireless Access Point -- It does not function as a ROUTER--so if you want/need to share a Cable Modem or other network connection wirelessly you'll need a separate router,...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great wireless access point/bridge/client!!!
I already have a DLink wireless network at home, but have a computer which has some software conflicts preventing me from adding a wireless card to it. The DWL-900 allowed me to use the existing network card and a cross over cable to gain wireless access to my existing DLink DWL-1000 Access point. The computer uses its existing network card, drivers, etc. and has no clue it is remote.

The DWL-900 appears to do everything plus more than the DWL-1000 as far as I can tell, but I am very happy with both access points.

The included USB connection and cable made setup a snap. Only non-trivial issue was the need to use a cross-over cable (rather than a standard network cable) in my situation. If using two of these devices to connect two hubs, you would just use the uplink ports of each with standard cables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific speed and signal strength
I've been using the DWL-650+ card with the matching DWL-900AP for a year now and have been completely excited and happy with its performance.

Its range through two rooms, up stairs and down a hall is very good. I've never once had a problem with dropped signals. I turn my laptop on and the signal stays solid until I turn it off. I'm using 128-bit WEP encryption, as well.

The speed is terrific. I applaud D-Link. I picked this combo because of the 22Mbps data rate. I can tell you that it really does double your throughput. On top of that, D-Link has a new firmware for the 900AP and driver for the 650+ that provided 4x/44Mbps mode. Note: it never actually negotiates at 44Mbps, but it does boost the speed. For example, at 2x/22Mbps, I get an average of 6.5Mbps (tested with QCheck from www.netiq.com), and at 4x/44Mbps, I get an average of 9.2Mbps... almost a 50% boost. Advertisement aside, getting 9Mbps from 802.11b is absolutely terrific.

Although I'm so high on this combo, if you're thinking of ordering any combo, I suggest going with D-Link's Extreme G 802.11g combo of DI-614 and DWL-G650, like I've done (should arrive in a few days).

1-0 out of 5 stars Shoddy
Echoing the sentiments of many others, my DWL-900AP works, but barely. It took me hours to figure out how to set it up, and work around the bugs in the software and firmware. In the end, I ended up flashing the firmware with Linksys firmware (the firmware for their WAP11 device works on the DWL-900AP).

The wireless network works now, but occasionally, a remote computer can't get through. Pinging the AP seems to remedy this. Other times (once every couple months), the unit stops working entirely. So I load up the configuration utility and play with the settings until it magically starts working again.

Its inconsistent behavior is extremely frustrating, and I'm tempted to throw it away and buy a different AP, just to get rid of the hassle. I don't recommend this product to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor UI--Mac Address Filtering works...
I'm in agreement with the review from September 30. The software included with the DWL900AP is sorely lacking. There were times where my hitting the 'Apply' button had no discernable impact on the Access Point's operation. Only after I hit 'OK' and re-loaded would the Access Point change its behavior.

In addition, if you install the USB drivers for the access point on a computer, despite USB's hot-swap ability, make sure you reboot prior to trying to modify configurations.

But you can get mac address filtering to work. The file needs to be in a specific format. Each address must be on it's own line, and the last line in the file should be empty (i.e. hit Enter after you're done entering the last entry). ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The D-Link Ishare cable/DSL Internet-sharing router protects your computers from hackers or unauthorized users. Used with DSL or cable modems, the D-Link 701 acts as both a firewall and decoy computer. Any hacking is directed to the gateway, not to your real network or computer. Up to 32 users can share files and connect to the Internet with a single Internet account. Use of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol provides up to 128 user addresses.

The D-Link Ishare has one local 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port and a single 10 Mbps Ethernet global port. The local port can be connected to a single computer for added protection from hackers. It can also be linked to a hub or switch for LAN sharing and Internet access.

After you connect the cables and transfer your Internet settings into the D-Link Ishare's Windows interface, installation is complete. The D-Link Ishare is compatible with Macintosh, Windows, Linux, and other platforms. It is backed by a lifetime warranty. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good while it works... but warranty is honored.
D-Link honors their warranty if you keep after them. The first one of these I purchased worked for about 5 months and then just stopped working. Sent back for repair under warranty and it eventually was returned after several phone calls and about 6 weeks. In the meantime I bought a second DI-701 (my wife kept pestering me about getting back on the Internet via our network) and installed it. Sure enough after about 5 months the 2nd unit just stopped working. Put the 1st unit back in place and was up again immediately. Sent 2nd unit back for repair under warranty with same eventual replacement after several phone calls to follow up. With my "hot" spare available the DI-701 seems to work just fine for me - set up is easy and it just works; as for real security this probably isn't it but then do you really know how to change the settings to make it really secure and still be able to surf the net? Average user - probably not. Better than no firewall certainly and makes it easy to share your connection - at half the price of most other gateways. You could do worse!

5-0 out of 5 stars Economic, Practical, and Easy
I have been using my D-Link DI-701 for about 5 months now and absolutely love it. I work for an ISP doing technical support for our DSL customers, and am quite familiar with much more expensive and advanced routers that provide the same basic services as the D-Link. I choose the D-Link because of the price mostly but also because of the simplistic nature and the dependability of D-Link products.

My primary use consists of sharing my cable modem with 4 other computers, and running a web/email/ftp/dns server on it. The interface is simple, even using telnet! Port mapping is easy and NAT (Network Address Translation) works like a champ. Sure there are some more advanced things the D-Link can't do, but the average end user will never need that.

Simply put, the D-Link DI-701 is simple, safe, fast, and reliable. And for the price, you can't go wrong.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont bother if you need IPSec, security or Netflix 0-star
I have had this unit (DI-701) for a year or so and recently found a problem in addition to the security hole thats posted here.

I upgraded to the newest firmware 4.10 because I needed the IPSec protocol that the 4.06 didnt have and it seems to work fine until I tried to access Netflix.com. The unit totally halts. All lights stay on and the unit cannot be found through its configurator. I have to recycle the power to the unit to get it back up and running again.

I called tech support and they told me to call Netflix and ask them what ports they are using to send back http requests. I told him that Netflix didnt have a tech support since they do not provide hardware. And it shouldn't be the case since I was able to access Netflix with the 4.06 firmware. Who knows what other site it cannot access. So to the recycling bin it goes!

2-0 out of 5 stars not really a sharing router
this does not directly enable sharing, unless you have an additional piece of hardware called a hub. i also experienced the loss of connectivity described by others, and am returning the item to amazon.(com)

2-0 out of 5 stars Price is great...when it works.
I've been using my router for a few months now, sharing our cable connection through out the house.

Though the price is GREAT, it doesn't work consistenly. It often loses the connection, and only regains it when you unplug the unit, and wait a minute before plugging it back in.

This happens at least once an hour with heavy traffic. A true impossibility for those of us staying connected to a gnutella network, downloading large files, or connecting to an outside server.

I'm very disappointed with this product and am leaving this review as I sift through routers looking for a NEW ONE! ... Read more

The DI-804 also provides hardware firewall security between your network and the Internet.

The DI-804 supports any Ethernet device, multiple machine types, all conventional operating systems, and server/client/relay. Plus, with its easy Web configuration, you'll have it set up and running in no time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Gateway ROCKS! - Super Easy Set-up and Works Perfectly
Once I recieved this in the mail, I was excited to try it out, but didn't think it would be so easy. You usually get a computer related product and you will have to shut down your computer, open it up, install drivers when you boot back up, etc. etc. The DI-804 was Super Quick and Easy to install. All i had to do was write down what my network settings are now, and change them to detect IP Automatically, (2 minutes), plug in each computer Physically with Ethernet cables, (2 minutes) and turn the power on to the router and reboot the computers, (4 minutes). When the computers came to, I was able to access the Internet from both computers right away. Then i went to go test the firewall, and my network is in Stealth Mode now. This product is unbelieveable easy to set-up (follow instructions) and works like a charm. I highly recommend this to anyone, who wants to share their blazing cable modem access and isn't exactly a network professional.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor performance on @Home cable modem
This router has the same problem as the SMC 7004ABR. When used in conjunction with older Motorola cable modems and @Home, it has serious lag for each tcp connection. For example, a web page with 30 images (no matter what size) will take almost a minute to load. The solution: get an SMC 7004BR (not ABR) or 7008BR. In other modem/isp situations it is probably just fine.

Also, someone else posted about only being able to map certain well-known ports through the firewall (FTP, HTTP, etc.), with no capability to do it by port number. The solution is to use the optional Telnet interface, which allows mapping by port number.

1-0 out of 5 stars Max throughput == 5MBit.
This switch has one *very* serious drawback, which it also shares with the more recent 704: a maximum throughput of 5MBit/s.

That means that if you have a faster connection than that (I have 10MBit) the remaining bandwidth is simply wasted. For me, transfer rates immediately dropped from 1.3Mbyte/s to 650KByte/s when I plugged this device in.

Like most of D-links gear, ie their laughably slow & buggy wireless routers, this device simply does not live up to its specs.

Avoid.

2-0 out of 5 stars TCP/IP connectivity issues
This is a great little router...when and if it works. Most nights it has some type of weird TCP/IP connectivity issue, no matter what firmware I'm using. It constantly drops packets, causing me to be signed off AIM repeatedly and lag in video games. If I bypass the router and connect my DSL modem to my computer, my dsl connection will work fine. I can find no possible cause for this connectivity issue, and get no response to any tech support contact I make. This is the ONLY router I have ever had a weird problem like this with, and I have worked with many routers. I have tried numerous different DSL modems with this router, and it still has the same problem. However, on the rest of the nights when the router does work, it works pretty great. Documentation on the control panel's features is pretty scarce, newcomers to the router may be scared off by the advanced features in the setup menu. If you find this router for a good price, it may be worth it. But if you are going to spend [$$$], I would recommend going with a linksys model.

4-0 out of 5 stars When you need ALL features working
Not much to say, this is like many others this kind.

What I realy like is the backup capacity. I use it hooked up to a cable modem, and use an ISDN line for backup. Works lovely.

There are other things that I'd like to have found, like an easy way to block the access to some addresses, and DMZ handling too. Anyhow worths every cent. ... Read more
