5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
My Rio 500 kicked the bucket recently, and I was in the market for a new MP3 player. For me, I wanted the smallest MP3 player with the largest memory, and also an ability to expand the memory.

I selected the RCA Lyra 128mb player because it looked like a perfect match to what I wanted. I just got it, and I am totally AMAZED by this player.

The Lyra measures about 2" x 2" x 0.75". It is incredibly light, even with the single AAA battery inside. The AAA will supposedly last about 10 hours of playing. The buttons are very nicely placed, with the volume set as up/down buttons on the side. The earphones that come with the unit are suprisingly good in terms of sound quality.

The front screen has a very large LCD screen that displays the filename and time elapsed.

I use Windows XP Home Edition, and literally just plugged the USB cable in, and XP did the rest. It saw the RCA Lyra as a 128 meg removeable drive! I simply dragged and dropped my favorite tunes into the RCA Lyra with Windows Explorer, and that's all I had to do. I was blown away by the ease to transfer the music files! The player does come with Music Match manager, but if you use XP, you won't even need it.

As if that wasn't good enough, the Lyra comes with a DSP button on the top, which lets you adjust the sound of the music. The possible settings are: flat, bass, pop, rock, and jazz. The sound quality is crystal clear also on this player.

The Lyra accepts SD memory cards, meaning you can pop in a 256mb card, to get a whopping total of 384 megs of storage space.

For this price, this player is an absolute steal! This is absolutely one of the best purchases I've ever made.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Deal
After buying my 11 year old daughter this player for Christmas, I decided to get one for myself. I find the Music Match jukebox software to be a very good program. I am just learning this whole MP3 thing, and the Music Match makes it easy. The player itself is small, lightweight, compact, and easy to use. There are buttons on the side for the volume. The player has very good sound coming out of the headphones. I have noticed that it takes an extra second or two for the display to change when the fast forward/rewind a song button is pressed. However, after the player is shut off and turned back on again, the player starts with the last song played before it was shut off. The armband is okay, but the buttons are not easily accessible. But, they can be pressed through the armband fabric. I have added a 64mb memory card and I am considering getting a higher memory card. Does anyone know what the max memory card is that can be added to this player? I would like to add a 256mb memory card. Can anyone email me and let me know if they've had some problems with that?

1-0 out of 5 stars Only get 182 songs with 512 SD Card
There is no documentation as to the Max size SD card that can be used with the Lyra1 128. I put in a 512MB SD card and it will recognize it and the amount of space but no matter how many songs I put on it, it will only play 182 songs including the ones on the internal 128. I have sent 3 emails to RCA customer service and they have refused to answer any of them, i.e. RCA has no customer service or they don't care!! I suggest you buy another product, preferably one from a company that has customer service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps on Ticking!!
I absolutely LOVE this mp3 player! I received it as a gift in October 2003, and it still works as it did the day I got it! I'm a clumsy person and it's been dinged and knocked around. When it gets dinged a little too hard, it'll shut off, but turn it back on, it's good as new. It's definitely worth the money. I also love that XP immediately recognizes it and pulls it up as another drive. It makes it easy to change music when I'm in a hurry. I also bought an fm transmitter by Belkin (around $20) and it plays through my car stereo flawlessly. I like the earphones that came with them. My ears are tiny and earbuds hurt. I also clip them on my shirt when I'm not using them. This is truly a great buy and worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, worth the money.
I recieved this player as a gift about 4 months ago, and it has worked perfectly to date. I would recommend it to someone searching for an inexpensive mp3 player, or someone with a relatively small music collection. The only problem I've ever had with it is its lack of a backlight. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The metallic silver RCA RP2488 portable CD player combines eye-catching slim styling--it's less than an inch thick!--and advanced features like support for MP3, mp3-PRO, and Windows Media Audio formats, as well as high-powered SmartTrax navigation. It even includes MusicMatch MP3 recording software to get you started burning your own MP3 CDs with up to 10 hours of music. Up to an incredible 720 seconds of esp-Xtreme skip protection with mp3-PRO files (and an impressive 180 seconds for audio CDs) makes this CD player virtually skip-free in most conditions and a great choice for joggers and runners.

The CD player's SmartTrax navigation technology helps you quickly access specific songs or playlists among the hundreds of tracks on an MP3/WMA-encoded CD-R/CD-RW. Using a library of computer-generated identification tags to identify digital audio files by title, artist, album, year, genre, and track number, the SmartTrax file-management system can "read" song data from your recordable CDs, letting you view song data and create playlists at the touch of a button. SmartTrax can read the song data even before the song is played. A four-line dot-matrix display shows SmartTrax data and allows 30-track/folder programmability.

Other playback features include Digital Bass Boost Surround for extra low-end slam and added musical depth, three preset equalization settings, and a hold switch to prevent unintended interruptions in playback (and to save batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped). The unit operates for approximately 20 hours on three AAA batteries, either alkalines or rechargeables (no batteries included), and a handy inline remote control lets you travel in style with all major operational functions at your fingertips.

1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of junk - deserves 0 stars.
I got this because the black model had a couple of favorable reviews. From now on I only trust the negative ones. RCA should never have made this & Amazon should not be selling it. Caveat emptor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!
I got this radio for our crew. The AM is a little weak - - But, where we work, that's expected. The FM and cassette are terrific. I was shocked to be able to tune in to FM stations and get such a clear signal. We now have music, both AC and CD option. Which helps, cause we sometimes have problems with available power plugs in stock area or when we have to pitch-in outside. This unit is light in weight, heavy on RCA expectations. A great product for a nice price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute for the office!
I purchased this as a gift for a relative. It seems that there is office has been having security difficulties - - things vanish so quickly. This portable AM/FM and Cassette does the trick. It's lightweight, easy to slip in deep desk drawer and plays great for the office crew. Gotta have music. Excellent too, for the price! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Usable, not user friendly
My first DVR. I use it for my 2 weekly customer conference calls. Both meetings last about an hour, then I transcribe action items, release schedules, etc. In the two months I've had it, I've burned through 5 sets of batteries. Not too pleased with that result. Insult to injury, I am unable to find the 3 volt adapter that it will accomodate. Not on this site, not at RCA.com, not surfing the net. Next stop Radio Shaft. 'Zon should provide access to that assessory. Be prepaired to drop coin on AAA cells.

Skip back button is very tricky, and a feature I use heavily. Hold it down long, it skips slow, hold it down longer, it goes a little faster, which is the same as the skip forward action. But, if you just tap the back button, it goes all the way back to the start of the recording! So, I'm 1/2 hour through transcription, don't hold down the tiny little back button as long as it thinks is necessary, and I must start over. Keep a very close eye on the time counter when using any of these functions so you can navigate your way back to the moment you fat-finger it.
I also pick up a terrible screech that is undetectable during recording, but ear melting on playback. Only happens at the office (tested it at home with no problem). Since I bought if only for the office, this reduces its usability quite a bit. Had to do over, I would have shopped more.
Dennis Kucinich for President!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but has lots of features
Whoever said this recorder doesn't have a pause button needs to look at the manual. While it's playing, you simply hit the play button again to pause it. And yes, that is in the manual.

This recorder is under $30 if you get the right deal, battery life is wonderful, the sound quality is just fine (I don't need to turn mine up past 5 or 6), and it's very small / lightweight.

It's definitely a shirt pocket item for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?
I bought this recorder to record lectures, and it does record lectures reasonably well.

However, in playback mode - the silly thing has NO PAUSE BUTTON! What were they thinking?

Normally, a device of this kind has a "playback pause" button - so you can pause playback. A Pause feature is always standard, because it is an essential recorder function. But not this RCA unit!

Instead, you can only stop the playback - which is like a playback reset - and then you have to hold down the "fast-forward", (which is only about double normal speed) - in order to get back to where you left off!

It is so incredibly frustrating - I felt compelled to write this review about it!

Normally, a "pause button" is standard - it is on EVERY OTHER recorder I have ever owned. But it is not included on this RCA unit.

What were they thinking?

5-0 out of 5 stars More than does the job!
I think this handy little device is perfect for all of the times when I need a quick and easy way to remember things from my travels. I'd recommend this item to anyone without any reservations.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is better than reviewed
Aside from the fact it is French. I found this recorder to be quite versatile and quick to learn. Care has to be exercised when using the buttons since they are marked but have no tactile cues. This was not an issue when I used it to take notes during an investigation. Playback quality is acceptable. Very understandable with all clearly spoken voices. I didn't have a problem with battery drain since I use rechargeables. For what I paid for the recorder, it performs very well. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Not everyone has the space (or the budget) to accommodate a large-scale home theater system, which is where this bookshelf system comes into play. The RCA RS2030 is equipped with a DVD player/receiver, two front speakers, and a subwoofer, yet it still leaves a relatively small footprint, fitting conveniently in a narrow cabinet or atop a VCR or other component. Despite its diminutive size, the system still packs an audio punch, with 2.1 channels delivering 80 watts of total power (20 watts to each of the front speakers, and 40 watts to the subwoofer).

The RS2030 is compatible with DVD, CD, Video CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 formats, and also includes a Digital PhotoView feature that plays JPEG photos in a rotating slideshow format with accompanying MP3 music. DVD resolution is sharp thanks to the progressive-scan feature, which scans each frame individually rather than interlacing them, as is common among older DVD players. Radio fans will appreciate the digital AM/FM tuner, which scans its 30 presets to change channels quickly and tune precisely. The system also includes a virtual surround feature, which simulates the surround-sound experience, and is compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS formats when connected to a 5.1-channel receiver.

The system works with other components thanks to the audio and video outputs, optical digital output, and S-video output. The unit comes with a remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was good
After doing reaserch for a small DVD Home Theater I found this RCA unit. I read some reviews that said this is a "Best buy!", because it can play anything and even display digital pictures from a CD. Well, it does do everything just poorly. When I got the unit the lid would open and then immediatley close. I figured that is how the unit worked and I would have to be quick to chang the cds. After a couple of months I noticed that new DVDs would skip and freeze. I thought it was the DVDs but when I tested them in a different DVD player they would paly fine. The sound is not the best either. When watching a DVD you can hardly hear people speaking. You have turn the volume up to the max to hear the speaking, but if there is music or an explosion the sound is so loud it makes me scramble for the remote to turn it down, and then I can not hear the speaking again. Needless to say I have had this unit to long to return it and am stuck with a DVD player that skips and does not have good sound.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whats up with all these crappy electronics....
I guess having everything made in China with Mexican components is not the way to go. I got the unit a couple of days ago by mail. Two of the four rubber pads on the bottom of the unit were missing. When I got it all plugged in the sound was pretty bad but I guess I could live with it. Then I went to open the CD lid. It is a power open unit but when I pressed the open button the lid would lift about 1/8 inch and then close again. i had to "assist" the lid with my finger for it to open all the way.
Also, I run a test lab in a manuafacturing environment, and I get the strong feeling that this unit is a DOA. In other words someone has already purchased and returned this unit, I am just the second or third person to get stuck with it. I must admit that I had a strong sinking feeling when I saw the "Made in China w/Mexican components" written on the box as well as all the descriptions on the box were written in Spanish! This unit goes back to BBuy today! How can a company make money with all these returns??

4-0 out of 5 stars very good for the price
I bought this because I needed a very small system. It has a clean sound and simple remote to use. The DVD quality is good. I gave it 4 out of 5 because the dvd rom lids rises to high and hits the shelf above it. Also the Blue background of the lcd panel is hard to read at a distance. This is a good unit for people who need a small package with good sound DVD player. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It just works...
The RCA Digital Cable Modem (DCM245R) is a cable modem that just works.

First purchased in June of 2002, my unit has never given me one bit of problems. During those times when something seemed wrong, it was due to the cable network NOT my modem. I have been able to count on a connection day in and day out with this unit.

It is DOCSIS compliant which means that it should be usable with many of the cable networks out there. However, check with your cable provider to make sure.

I can hardily recommend this unit as it has withstood the test of time and continues to provide me with exceptional service to this day.

Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Cable Modem
I bought this item from e-bay new and unopened in the box.
When the internet cable technician installed it he said it
was a good one. So far I have had no problems and it seems
to be a nice little modem. The modem front displays are
easy to read and the installation is easy. The only drawback
in my case was that it didn't have an ethernet cable as part
of the system (USB cable was included in the box) and I had
to purchase one of these. No big deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grab these before they replace it with the new model
For a couple years we had one of those rental units from the CATV Company. When we found out that under the rental agreement, if it broke they had the right to charge us way too much cash for replacement, it was time to get our own unit. In rental fees alone, the RCA paid for itself in less than a year. The cable company itself has gone away from the expensive units of the past, and uses a black, lay-down only version of the RCA modem.

The RCA model here can be used as an upright (which is the way we use it), or attach the rubber feet, and use it as a lay-down model. It features either USB connection, or the standard Ethernet. I have an older computer running Windows 98SE, and the generic Ethernet card did not seem to work. The USB option works well, and is a nice option. It also features a rear reset, and a front on-off button. One feature that's hard to appreciate if you didn't know about it is the placement of the cable connector. On the old rental unit it was high in the middle, and even with the large modem size it would sometimes tip the modem if the cable were disturbed. RCA places their connection right near the bottom when used in the upright position. This not only alleviates the problem with our old rental unit, but also helps prevent tipping of the much lighter RCA unit.

We have used the RCA unit now for several months, and find it performs as well or better, than the old expensive rental unit. If we could ask for anything more (hence the four stars), we'd like units to show a simple display of the current connection speed, and activity. We realize this is available in software, but its nice to see it before attempting a download connection, or accessing Internet monitors. Currently the RCA unit flashes in response to changing speeds, but we'd like to see a simple numerical indication. As more CATV high-speed connections are installed, overall speed will decline. In the future, we'd like to try and hit the best times for fast downloads. Even over a CATV modem, a recent download of OS updates for my fathers Mac, took a few hours to complete. Now that video, media, and other files are getting ever bigger; its nice to know what speeds can be obtained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
I'm using this for my cable connection and it ably can supply Internet access to my wireless network which consists of a Linksys router and two PC's. I get incredibly low ping times and it makes online gameplay a real pleasure. Great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing special.
Performs as advertised - but this is a commodity item so buy this product by price.

5-0 out of 5 stars This product is a BOON
This item is fantastic. The controls are easy as pie, the unit fits in your coat pocket or briefcase, it holds gobs of files, what else do you want. I feel bad for all those suckers who shelled out all that extra cash for an I-Pod. The only complaints are that I hate Music Match and I really prefer Real Player. I tried to transfer my mp3 that were created with Real and the tags did not transfer. But that criticism is of MusicMatch, not the Lyra. File transfers are slow, I loaded the Lyra to a quarter of capacity and it took 90 minutes to transfer the files from the PC. Again, not a major problem. Still, it was a great purchase and I highly recommend it. I use XP and had no problem. Well, that's a lie, the first time I hooked it to my PC the Lyra froze. I think it was my fault as I did not follow the instruction card. Anyway, when it froze it was a snap to reset, so no problem. I guess you need to be a little (very little) computer literate to use the machine, but if you use mp3 files for music, you need to have some computer knowledge. So, in conclusion, if you want an mp3 juke box, this is a good choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Poor Design
I'm going to give this product its deserved kudos in the beginning here so I can saturate the rest of the review with the negative this product also deserves. The windows-friendly removable hard-drive design is nice, and this product is fairly cheap.

Of course, it acts wonky and unpredictable. I would select a folder to play and it would refuse to just play the damned thing. After each song it would stop playing and change the mode to "repeat all". I have no clue why, either. USB 1.1 transfers are painful, and the transfer interface isn't exactly CONVENIENT for overnight transfers. Profiling the player takes an eternity, and you have to do it twice (unless i misunderstood how this thing works).

It's absolutely spellbinding how user un-friendly the case is. what is this case? It's horrible. I can't fathom its purpose. I stare at it night after night, trying to explain to myself what human being could have possibly made such a piss-poor design decision. Ugly. Bulky. Hardly protective. Inhibitive. Obnoxious. Ridiculous. Why? I have some old socks I could have used that might have fit better.

But (forgive me for jumping around) the worst aspect is definately the actual interface. There is no logical system. An iPod, or Rio Riot, has a system. Things are organized based on a hierarchy. Menus are layed out in a coherent pattern. This goes BEYOND learning curves, because accessing your music is just not convenient or intuitive. It's like standing on your head to work your coffee maker.

I have no idea why you'd by this flaky piece of garbage. There are other products in the price range with a better reliability record as well as more features. Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, with some fiddling
I was able to get this on close-out at Sears for about $200. So far, overall I'm happy with it (after 2 weeks) and plan to keep it. Here's my 2 cents about it:

Pros:
1. Great sound quality
2. Battery life does last at least 15 hours
3. Organizes well
4. Does resume to last song played--starts at the beginning of the song
5. Metal case, very solid feeling
6. Great accessories included (except the case)

Cons
1. I play mostly WMA files, needed to upload quite a bit of firmware updates to make it work.
2. Needs to be reset now and then--but soft reset still keeps most of your settings (except backlight, equalizer settings)
3. Can get slow during shuffle mode
4. Can slow down when turning off

I purchased this to use in the car with the Belkin Tunecast II. It serves its purpose well, has been reliable after setting up.

A note about the Belkin Tunecasts, "II" seems to be slightly more amplified, but I'm not really that impressed with the clarity of either, as they both have quite a bit of distortion, at least driving around southern california.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price
This is a cool MP3 player/hard drive for the money. It is simple to use and easily read by my computer. It does have a few minor problems that I don't like. It has a slow download time (USB not firewire), the screen has a minor uncontrolable dimming problem, and the control knob sticks a bit. The worst problem the player has is it doesn't like to play in the cold. If it is cold, it has a loud, continuous beep and give the message, "ambient temperature too low." It will not turn back on until it warms up, so it will not work well on a jog unless you live in Las Vegas. The player works best plugged into the wall. But with all the drawbacks, it still is pretty good for the low price.

2-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE: Buggy product, shoddy product support
BUYER BEWARE!
I purchased this mp3 player and at first it worked just fine for less than an hour.

SYNOPSIS:
This is a neat toy but has become a very expensive paperweight after just a month. The product tries very hard to be a jukebox/second hard drive, but it is not functional for someone who plans to update/change files and songs due to the VERY SLOW USB 1.1 connection.

Save your money and get a player with faster connection options, better usability, support, design, etc

BUGGY:
The player freezes/hangs when it is powered down and then turned back on for use. Additionally, the display freezes and hangs after playing more than five songs. Total pain since I CONSTANTLY have to reset the unit. And I don't always have something to jam in the super small reset hole-regular pens won't do it.

POOR PRODUCT SUPPORT:
I have had no success in downloading updates to fix the problem because there aren't any. What happened to customer support and providing updates for users?

SLOOOOOW INTERFACE:
The USB 1.1 interface is very slow and takes a long time to initially set up your library on the computer. Took all night for me to upload the 5 Gig of songs/albums I own. Big downer since I was excited to have it charged and ready to go in an hour or so.

DESIGN:
It is bulky and awkward to wear if you are working out/jogging.

BATTERY LIFE:
Battery life is very disappointing only around 3 hours

SYNCRONIZING/ORGANIZING SONGS:
The Music Match software is a very slow and awkward interface to sync files. The ability to create playlist is a good idea since playback of syncronized songs is HORRIBLE (more on this later). Creating play lists is fairly easy and with Music Maker, but loading playlists on the player is VERY TIME-CONSUMING.

PRODUCT INTERFACE/USE:
Poor interface/use. Unless you use the playlist maker (which is time-consuming to load), you will be very frustrated at the playback functionality. There is no inherent song continuity unless you are willing to listen to your entire collection-unsorted.

That is to say there are several options for playback: artist, album, genre...and each with its own quirks and pains

Artist playback: If you try to play songs by the same artist you can only listen to songs from the same album. If there is a guest artist in a song then you will have to select that one separately. When the current album is over you will have to go out and select the artist's other album. All possible to do but it shouldn't be so difficult.

Album Playback: Songs only play from the same artist and same album...if there is any differences-ie movie soundtracks with multiple artists-the songs will play from each artist/group individually and require you to navigate back to the album and select another song.

Song genre playback? It is a combination of artist and album difficulties-oh its even more painful! IE: You can't listen to all the Rock songs at once because you'll be selecting the songs by artist/group and album.

DIFFULTY AS A 2nd HARD DRIVE:
It is difficult to use as a second hard drive/transfer files between computers since you have to install the driver and restart on each computer.

NOTE: My friend who owns an Mac was able to plug the USB into her computer and immediately recognized it as a hard drive. THIS IS PLUG-n-PLAY at its best! This begs the question...WHY do the Windows users (the intended audience) have to install a driver to use it?

GOOD FOR CD CHANGER REPLACEMENT:
I also want to say it is very nice to use the unit as a CD changer in my car. Finally my tape player has a use again!

RECOMMENDATION:
I do like the idea of a second hard drive but I would recommend an mp3 player with a USB 2.0/Firewire interface if you have a lot of files/songs you plan on backing up/syncing.

If you want a high capacity "jukebox" or 2nd hard drive DON'T BUY THIS! There are A LOT BETTER ALTERNATIVES to spend your hard earned money on!

CURRENT STATUS:
I am currently in the process of sending my player for service and if it has any more problems I plan on getting an iPod or something similar with Firewire since my computer doesn't have USB 2.0 ... Read more
